This Sumptuous Suite Showcases Bespoke His-and-Hers Closets Inspired by Motorcycles and the Beverly Hills Hotel
San Francisco designer Kristen Peña creates a couple's retreat teeming with style.
The couple—a commercial electric company owner and a hairdresser with two teenage children—were looking to carve out “a private space to relax and get away from the bustle of the rest of the house,” Peña says. “They wanted to feel almost as if it were a hotel on their property.”
The resulting additional build encompasses a sprawling bedroom, bathroom, and laundry room—not to mention bespoke his-and-hers closets, each thoughtfully tailored to match their personalities. While his echoes a love for motorcycles (with black, studded wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries), hers reflects a longtime admiration for the Beverly Hills Hotel (featuring chic Martinique wallpaper).
The most difficult part of the project, Peña admits, was figuring out what to do with the existing turret: “It was an interesting challenge to figure out how to use [the old-fashioned space] in a contemporary way!” We'd say she nailed it.

Primary Bedroom
“The primary bedroom was inspired by the feeling of rest, relaxation, and quiet beauty.” Bed: custom-designed by K Interiors and crafted by Chopwood Co. with Lauren Hwang upholstery. Bedding: Kearsley. Rug and throw: Rosemary Hallgarten. Dresser: Lawson-Fenning. Nightstand: custom, Thomas Hayes. Lights: Ochre. Bench: JM Szymanski. Accessories: Super Simple.
Turret Area
“A fainting couch only seemed fitting for the turret space within this otherwise more contemporary bedroom,” Peña says. Decorative wall painting: Caroline Lizarraga . Sofa: custom-designed by K Interiors and crafted by Hardest Dwyer with Rosemary Hallgarten alpaca boucle fabric and antique brass. Side tables: Egg Collective. Pillows: custom. “She loves the Beverly Hills Hotel and really wanted the fun vibe to be a hidden treasure in her closet,” the designer reveals.

Primary Bathroom
The designer’s favorite space in the suite, “the primary bathroom is beyond amazing!” she enthuses. “The texture of the backsplash tile, the gorgeous slabs, the unique decorative paint and the luxurious materials all together came out better than I could have hoped.”
