Voyager Estate, Margaret River Steve James
In the stevens valley in the subregion of wallcliffe, voyager estate is one of margaret river ’s oldest vineyards, first planted in the late 1970s (though it was called freycinet estate until 1991). today, under the watchful eye of viticulturist steve james, the vineyard occupies over 100 hectares, with the regional stars chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon taking the lead, though there are another 12 varieties planted, including tempranillo and grenache . recent organic certification now applies to the winery and over a three-quarters of the vines, with the remainder not far behind..
Planted over 112 hectares, the Voyager Estate vineyard was first established in 1978, but has constantly evolved over the years, with chardonnay, semillon, sauvignon blanc, sauvignon gris, chenin blanc, viognier, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet franc, malbec, tempranillo and grenache now in the ground.
Steve James has worked as the viticulturist at Voyager for over two decades, and he is overseeing the transition of the entire operation to certified organic management. That process initially began with a block of the original cabernet sauvignon plantings, which has been organically farmed since 2004, though not certified.
“We’re always on the lookout for new environmental initiatives,” notes James. “I’m a huge believer in the benefits of revegetation, and we have planted over 70,000 native plants on our property through revegetation programs.”
James was encouraged by the results, with renowned soil scientist Claude Bourguignon also praising the soil structure and the development of deep root systems when he visited in 2018. Bourguignon readily identified that performance as being due to their long-term organic practices, which James had already began expanding through over a third of the vineyard.
“He was particularly impressed with the porosity of the topsoil,” says James, “richness of the clay at depth and the vertical root structure of the vines penetrating deeply into the stony clay subsoil … encouraged by many years of no herbicide use and the ongoing use of compost and natural products. This type of root structure encourages the expression of a sense of place in the wines – this is where the minerality and other earthy complexing elements come from.”
As of 2021, 90 hectares were certified organic (ACO), while the winery was also certified as an organic processor, and James estimates that by 2023 the entire property will have progressed out of conversion. Initially, he didn’t want to overwhelm the viticulture team with new methods, but he notes that they embraced the process, and therefore began rolling it out more quickly, with benefits that have actually proven to make their job somewhat easier.
“It has been most interesting to see the changes in our wines since farming organically. We are seeing less overt varietal character and more of an expression of the land and the soil. The tannins have become finer, and the fruit flavours are more savoury, complex and layered… I’ve always loved the term winegrower to describe viticulturists, because that is what we do.”
“One of our biggest challenges is actually garden weevils,” says James, “and we’re combating this through organic farming practices with under-vine cultivation and the encouragement of beneficial insects through flowering cover crops. Interestingly, this has given us natural control, which is achieving a better result than with chemical control.”
The vineyard is already showing a big improvement in resilience, which James says will only improve over time. “This was verified during the challenging 2021 harvest in Margaret River where our organically farmed vines produced exceptional fruit with minimal disease,” he says. “Interestingly, a couple of other local organic winegrowers observed a similar trend.”
The management process doesn’t stop at organics, either, with broader issues very much on the agenda. “Climate Change is an issue of paramount importance,” says James, “not only for the survival of our species, but also in the way it specifically impacts our industry. We are ultimately working towards becoming a carbon negative business. We’re currently building and recording baseline soil carbon levels in the pursuit of this goal.”
Voyager estate is a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia and they have also created an Environmental Stewardship Team, which reports to all aspects of the business to refine operations. “We’re always on the lookout for new environmental initiatives,” notes James. “I’m a huge believer in the benefits of revegetation, and we have planted over 70,000 native plants on our property through revegetation programs.”
Through international offsetting projects, the entire Voyager Estate operation has been carbon neutral since 2017, which includes any air travel associated with the business. Additionally, a 100-kilowatt solar unit was installed on the winery in 2018 to reduce their dependence on the grid. Wastewater is treated onsite and used to water revegetated farmland, while native reed beds have been established to reduce runoff. They are also in the process of establishing their own certified organic compost facility to close the loop on their waste output.
James believes that the holistic approach that underpins operations at Voyager Estate is also vital in better expressing their terroir. “Wise land management is critical for a myriad of environmental reasons and is also crucial in enabling us to make wines which express a true sense of place. Ultimately, we want to work with nature rather than trying to manipulate or control it, encouraging biodiversity and ensuring long-term sustainability of the land.”
In the vineyard, James has a very hands-on approach, in that the work is exhaustively manual, from pruning, to thinning, to picking and sorting, which is a significant labour exercise over 112 hectares. No matter the scale, James insists this level of detail is vital in achieving the best wines possible, with each plant tended with a “single-vine mentality” to achieve consistent performance in individual blocks, ensuring even ripening and quality to make the best wine possible.
“We are blessed with a naturally very beautiful site, and I think our focus on producing wines which are a pure expression of place is what I am most proud of,” says James. “This actually takes a deliberate focus and is distilled over time out of many factors, with organic farming being one of them. It has been most interesting to see the changes in our wines since farming organically. We are seeing less overt varietal character and more of an expression of the land and the soil. The tannins have become finer, and the fruit flavours are more savoury, complex and layered… I’ve always loved the term winegrower to describe viticulturists,” he adds, “because that is what we do.”

You’re gonna need a bigger number: Scientists consider a Category 6 for mega-hurricane era
- Show more sharing options

In 1973, the National Hurricane Center introduced the Saffir-Simpson scale, a five-category rating system that classified hurricanes by wind intensity.
At the bottom of the scale was Category 1, for storms with sustained winds of 74 to 95 mph. At the top was Category 5, for disasters with winds of 157 mph or more.
In the half-century since the scale’s debut, land and ocean temperatures have steadily risen as a result of greenhouse gas emissions. Hurricanes have become more intense, with stronger winds and heavier rainfall. This week a research team at the University of Pennsylvania led by climate scientist Michael Mann predicted that the North Atlantic will see an unprecedented 33 named tropical cyclones from June 1 to Nov. 30.
With catastrophic storms regularly blowing past the 157-mph threshold, some scientists argue, the Saffir-Simpson scale no longer adequately conveys the threat the biggest hurricanes present.

‘Rivers in the sky’ have drenched California, yet even more extreme rains are possible
Despite considerably back-to-back rainy winters in California, new research finds the region has seen much wetter years in the last 3,000 years. Experts worry that variability, coupled with climate change, could leave the state unprepared.
April 25, 2024
Earlier this year, two climate scientists published a paper that compared historical storm activity to a hypothetical version of the Saffir-Simpson scale that included a Category 6, for storms with sustained winds of 192 mph or more.
Of the 197 hurricanes classified as Category 5 from 1980 to 2021, five fit the description of a hypothetical Category 6 hurricane: Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, Hurricane Patricia in 2015, Typhoon Meranti in 2016, Typhoon Goni in 2020 and Typhoon Surigae in 2021.
Patricia, which made landfall near Jalisco, Mexico, in October 2015, is the most powerful tropical cyclone ever recorded in terms of maximum sustained winds. (While the paper looked at global storms, only storms in the Atlantic Ocean and the northern Pacific Ocean east of the International Date Line are officially ranked on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Other parts of the world use different classification systems.)
Though the storm had weakened to a Category 4 by the time it made landfall, its sustained winds over the Pacific Ocean hit 215 mph.
“That’s kind of incomprehensible,” said Michael F. Wehner , a senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and co-author of the Category 6 paper. “That’s faster than a racing car in a straightaway. It’s a new and dangerous world.”
In their paper, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Wehner and co-author James P. Kossin of the University of Wisconsin–Madison did not explicitly call for the adoption of a Category 6, primarily because the scale is quickly being supplanted by other measurement tools that more accurately gauge the hazard of a specific storm.
“The Saffir-Simpson scale is not all that good for warning the public of the impending danger of a storm,” Wehner said.

The category scale measures only sustained wind speeds, which is just one of the threats a major storm presents. Of the 455 direct fatalities in the U.S. due to hurricanes from 2013 to 2023 — a figure that excludes deaths from 2017’s Hurricane Maria — less than 15% were caused by wind, National Hurricane Center director Mike Brennan said during a recent public meeting. The rest were caused by storm surges, flooding and rip tides.
The Saffir-Simpson scale is a relic of an earlier age in forecasting, Brennan said.
“Thirty years ago, that’s basically all we could tell you about a hurricane, is how strong it was right now. We couldn’t really tell you much about where it was going to go, or how strong it was going to be, or what the hazards were going to look like,” Brennan said during the meeting, which was organized by the American Meteorological Society. “We can tell people a lot more than that now.”
He confirmed the National Hurricane Center has no plans to introduce a Category 6, primarily because it is already trying “to not emphasize the scale very much,” Brennan said. Other meteorologists said that’s the right call.
“I don’t see the value in it at this time,” said Mark Bourassa , a meteorologist at Florida State University’s Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies. “There are other issues that could be better addressed, like the spatial extent of the storm and storm surge, that would convey more useful information [and] help with emergency management as well as individual people’s decisions.”
Simplistic as they are, Herbert Saffir and Robert Simpson’s categories are the first thing many people think of when they try to grasp the scale of a storm. In that sense, the scale’s persistence over the years helps people understand how much the climate has changed since its introduction.
“What the Saffir-Simpson scale is good for is quantifying, showing, that the most intense storms are becoming more intense because of climate change,” Wehner said. “It’s not like it used to be.”
