This was an exceedingly well-designed and well-led trip. It is obvious that the leaders are constantly evaluating the quality of their product and modifying it as needed to offer the best experience possible.

Such a wonderful trip! We have recommended it to many friends already!! The attention to detail, the provision of wonderful food, wines, snacks and even happy hours at the end of most days hiking were just the best. The guides that appeared at just the appointed hour in some cathedrals, cities we visited, and the clear relationships they had established with vendors and people along the way was great for our experience.

This trip exceeded my wildest expectations. The itinerary was well designed with just the right amount of hiking, dining, and personal time, and the hiking experiences were varied and always interesting with gorgeous vistas. Hotels were amazing and felt very luxurious. Staff everywhere was lovely and accommodating.

Loved this trip! The pace was perfect—around five hours of hiking each day, late lunch, several hours for rest, relaxation, exploration of the towns we were in, followed by evening dinner. We all agreed that this trip should be advertised as a culinary expedition: the variety and quality of meals was amazing!

We really enjoyed this trip. Itinerary was really well designed with a perfect mix of culture and hiking and swimming. The days went quickly but we never felt rushed.

A well-designed and executed trip! The hotels were unique, comfortable and fun; our Trip Leader handled every detail flawlessly (and did it all with good humor)! Hiking is emphasized in the written materials, but the other jewels are discovered when learning the history of the area with local guides, who added layers of information and perspective that truly enhanced our experience.

What Portugal’s  Rota Vincentina  walking route lacks in icon status, it makes up for in mind-boggling beauty with unforgettable landscapes that’ll leave a lasting impression in your mind (and on your phone’s camera roll). Passing through the sun-drenched regions of Algarve and Alentejo and meandering along a coastal path that’ll take you by sand dunes and across jagged cliffs high above the Atlantic Ocean, this once-in-a-lifetime journey showcases the very best of Portugal’s natural charm.

Europe walking faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join a europe walking trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What are the types of walking & hiking holidays?

We predominantly provide two styles of walking & trekking holidays: 

Center-based – this style of holiday spends all (or majority) of time in the center of the action. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. Enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once), and a selection of the best restaurants and other attractions in the neighborhood. All you have to do is sit back and relax as we pick the best combination of walks available either directly from the foot of your accommodation or just a short transfer away (often a public bus or train). To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best walks and hikes going 'round.

Point-to-point – this style of holiday makes you walk from one place to the other, pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then, depending on the region and the amount of hiking we need to cover on a daily basis. On point-to-point tours, you'll start in A and finish in B. Think about the Inca Trail, the Mount Everest Base Camp trek, the Hadrian’s Wall hike, or the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks, and a camera). 

What is included in walking & trekking trips?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: this transportation is often public as that's the way we like to travel). We also include ALL hiking permits, whether it is in the Himalayas or the US National Parks. On top of that, we provide our highly qualified and experienced leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

How fit do I need to be to go on a walking & trekking trip?

We have walks ranging from relatively easy to rather challenging. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose to walk, we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness to ensure that you get the most out of your walk or hike. Try to commit to some type of physical training program around six weeks before you depart. Here are some suggestions: Long walks: go on some long walks of 3-6 hours duration before you leave, wearing the boots you’re taking, and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches. Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling, and the various aerobic classes offered at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba, and circuit classes) all help to give you fitness and stamina. Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your muscle strength, which is needed for the steady climb up a mountain if you’re embarking on this type of hike (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training).

When is the best time to go on a walking trip in Europe?

You might think that the best time to go on a walking trip in Europe is during the summer months of June, July, and August, but actually, the shoulder seasons of both spring and autumn are preferable due to lower temperatures and fewer crowds, especially if you're heading to the Mediterranean.

What to pack for a walking trip can depend on how difficult the walk that you plan to do is but generally it's a good idea to make sure you have the below items:

What a wonderful experience we have had on our “Cotswolds, Castles & Cottages” Tour. This tour was the very best experience we have ever had traveling overseas. The booking process was seamless and painless. We felt especially grateful that while the group was limited to 8 participants, it was guaranteed to proceed with 2 people. As it ended up, our trip was just me and my husband and we felt so fortunate to have had the attention of the guides in such a personal way. The guides were all tremendous and I am confident that a larger group would have felt equally tended to. Special thanks to our guides and drivers: Denise, Orazio, Roberto, Carlos, Fabio and Massimo. Part of what was truly evident was how passionate they each were about Sicily and how many of them had connections with people at the restaurants, local businesses and attractions that we went to. We felt like we were in such good hands during the time we were with all of the guides. Each tour and activity was enlightening and educational. The included lunches and other meals were top notch. The opening night walking food and wine tour was a great way to kickoff the trip. There were some others who joined us for that portion, and it was most welcome. I don't think it would have been as much fun for the restaurants and enoteca to have just 2 people and the guide show up, and we knew the rest of the trip we would have individual attention. We felt pampered with our lunches on the Mafia tour, at the winery on Etna, in Marzememi and Agrigento. There was never a feeling of penny-pinching, more plush and like what we would have chosen for ourselves! The selected hotels were excellent! Centrally located, each with a fantastic breakfast spread and fun bar/restaurants. We would happily go back to any of them again and recommend them. We loved the scheduling each day and felt like we had a great mix of free time to explore on our own. Lastly, Graziana was out lifeline while we were traveling. She connected with us daily to check in, and to share the next days plan and name of our guide and where they would meet us. She made dinner reservations for us while we were there and provided recommendations that were helpful. We didn't encounter any issues, but felt that we had a ready ally if needed. Massimo also checked in midtrip, so we truly felt like everyone was interested in us having the best possible trip. I cannot wait to return to Sicily. We have recommended Sicily Activities to many people since our return and would book again in a heartbeat.
