The Renaissance has begun. Beyoncé has stayed incredibly quiet since releasing her critically lauded seventh studio album last summer and now, devout members of the Beyhive are finally able to witness songs such as “Break My Soul,” “Cuff It,” and “Virgo’s Groove” live. Bey opened her first show in a custom shimmering, metallic suit courtesy of Alexander McQueen while she thanked everyone in the crowd who traveled from all over the world to be with her for the tour’s opening night. “You could have been anywhere in the world tonight, but you choose to be here with me,” she said to the crowd after taking the stage. Half a decade after she returned to film in the live-action remake of The Lion King , Beyoncé has signed on to appear in another, similar movie. This time around, she’s making the production a family affair.

Beyoncé will star in Disney’s upcoming movie Mufasa: The Lion King with her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. The casting was revealed when the first trailer for the film was shared online.

This time around, Beyoncé will reprise her role as Nala, the love interest of Simba in the original Disney animated movie. Blue Ivy will step in to portray Nala, the daughter of Simba and Nala.

Mufasa: The Lion King marks Blue Ivy’s first film role–playing something other than herself, that is. As Beyoncé’s daughter, she’s already appeared in a number of high-profile documentaries alongside her mother.

Many people were introduced to Blue Ivy via Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé . That concert film/documentary hybrid focused on the singer’s Renaissance World Tour, which supported her album of the same name in the summer of 2022. Blue Ivy performed at a number of dates on the trek, and an entire segment of the production told the story of how she became involved and trained for the opportunity.

Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel to the live-action/animated The Lion King . It is set to be released on December 20, 2024.

In addition to Beyoncé, many voice actors who appeared in The Lion King are back for this next title in the series. Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner are on board for another go, as they starred in the first. Joining those men and both Beyoncé and Blue Ivy are fellow celebrities like Donald Glover and Thandiwe Newton.

At just 12 years old, Blue Ivy is already one of the most successful people her age in the world. She’s charted a Hot 100 hit with “Brown Skin Girl” alongside her mother. That tune–its music video, specifically–won the pair a Grammy, making the eldest Carter child one of the youngest Grammy champions ever.

After Covid shut down AMC and the rest of the globe’s multiplexes and the actors strike ratcheted down the box office, you could say that the No. 1 exhibitor was taking its fate into its own hands with Taylor Swift: The Era’s Tour . However, it has Scott Swift, Taylor Swift’s father, to thank. He reportedly made the call to AMC CEO Adam Aron to sidestep studios and gain more cash in taking his daughter’s movie from her $1 billion-plus-selling, sold-out concert tour directly to AMC. Why have a studio walk away with a ton of cash and spend tens of millions in marketing when Swift with a then-near-400 million social media followers is the best form of advertisement? She tweeted a few times to promote the movie, and showed up at her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs games to drum up her $15M Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film as a must-see. The movie also received a SAG-AFTRA waiver, which allowed the pop star to show up at her own Los Angeles world premiere and do publicity. The result: $100M in global advance ticket sales. AMC, to avoid antitrust issues, hired Gotham-based distributor Variance Films to book cinemas across the nation, and Trafalgar to handle the overseas release. Much to the chagrin of the studios, who had their thing to say about Aron’s entry into the distribution business, they all started moving their movies away (i.e., Universal’s The Exorcist reboot, Lionsgate’s Ordinary Angels ) from Eras Tour and its arrival on the calendar October 13. Swift cleverly tailored her marketing to fans, releasing the movie on a date that reps her lucky number, with tickets priced at $13.13 for children and seniors. Initially she wasn’t going to preview the movie, looking to open hard on 10/13. At the last minute, during the week of release, Swift changed her mind and opted for last-minute Thursday previews (they only yielded $2.8M).
