Wardruna were as amazing as ever! Unfortunately, in order to make more money, the organisers of the event sold standing tickets till the Shepherds Bush O2 arena was so full that people had to stand behind the bar to hope and see something. I had been at the venue before and it was never this full. Surely a great concert, but the experience was somehow damaged by the excessive number of people inside. Is that even compliant with safety and security standards?

Incredibly powerful voices, in conjunction with strange, traditional musical instruments. Absolutely clear sound, without any electrical instruments or use of distortion. Great atmosphere, combining Wardruna's mystical sound with very impressive light effects. Watching Wardruna live is a rather different experience rather than just listening to their albums, that every fan should experience at least once.

Union Chapel, London, November 16th

Perfect venue, perfect soundtrack for an unforgettable night.

Way beyond a music concert, this was a ritual

in a magical and overwhelming environment.

Wardruna´s music is made with love and one can feel the passion they bring into their work.

Music from and to the soul.

The Union Chapel for the gig was the perfect venue. The place felt intimate and everyone had clear view of the stage.

The atmosphere was eerie and electric. I havn,t experienced anything like it. Wardrunna themselves were just fantastic really. I was quite overwhelmed by the whole experience... very moving.

Great venue, good sound, nice band. I would have liked the band to have more interaction during the concert and that the encore would have been more than one song, but hey, don't complain, it was totally worth it. It was nice there was a signing session

Amazing band, amazing performance, amazing concert! I would go again and again and again..... Out of 10 I'd give them 11! Love their music and they all were exactly as I imagined - real, normal people, putting their hearts and souls into what they do!

5/5 stars. It was absolutely wonderful. The energy that they brought was mesmerizing. I would love to see them brought back to Town Hall again in the future. It was an excellent concert.

The sound at this venue was very good. The performance was amazing. It's entirely something else to see the way they are producing the sounds you hear on the album track.

Wardruna reveal details for new album “Kvitravn”

10 March 2020 The Rockpit

Wardruna

The forthcoming and fifth album from Wardruna , Kvitravn , will be released on June 5. The tracklisting has now been revealed.

Frontman and mastermind behind this incredible music, Einar Selvik has some more thoughts on the poetry behind the albums lyrics.

“The power of words, poetry and abstract thinking as well as the ability to master them in various forms was highly regarded in the oral societies of the past. It is a trait that we feel should not be forgotten. Our lyrics are therefore an important layer to the music. Whether the given song is about traditions, spirituality, philosophy or other esoteric subjects, there should always be a potential of learning something.

Knowledge, yet knowledge that is not served as overly explained truths, but rather in abstract images and hints that evokes the listener to seek their own understanding – much like the way Old Norse poetry deals with esoteric matters. So, for those who want to search deeper into our songs, the upcoming album will contain complete lyrics along with English translations. When revealing the track-list, it also makes sense to show the translations of the titles, so one potentially gets a better idea of the album´s content.

“Regarding topics from the album I guess that even though it deals with some pretty obscure and esoteric subjects I would say that as an overall the album subtly promote the value of returning to, or at least approaching an animistic world view and the positive effects of again seeing nature as something sacred that we are part of – that divinity is found in everything around us and not in halls up in the clouds.

The wolf song Grá is the most direct and obvious example of adressing contemporary issues – in this case reflecting on how our relation to wolves and predators in general has developed through time. Like I said in the quote on the video it adresses the cost and sometimes inconvinient responsibilities of being part of and not above nature.

The song Skugge (Shadow) is about a conversation between man and his/her shadow. It questions our modern western idea that knowledge(and confirmation) is somthing predominantly aquired externally instead of internally.

This also relates to the song Munin: Odin has two ravens that are Hugin (thought) and Munin (memory). According to myth they roam the world every day and Odin express his fear that Hugin wont return but even more so the fears for Munin to be lost. But why? It is impossible to think without memory. Man has a consciousness which always bears the past within it: we think and speak with historic references. Our life-world is historic in all of its being. We live in a culture of memory, because man is a being who carries his past within. What is culture if not memory, understood as both individual and collective? Memory is not simply instrumental, but something which is a fundamental condition for culture. ”

Kvitravn musically continues where the Runaljod trilogy left off, yet it marks a distinct evolution in Wardruna’s unique sound. In a rich musical tapestry, Wardruna use a broad selection of both traditional and historical instruments such as Kravik-lyre, Trossingen-lyre, Taglharpa, Sootharp, Langeleik, Crwth, Goat- horn, Lur, Bronze-lur, flute, Moraharpa, and the record also features guest appearances by a small group of prominent traditional singers, spearheaded by Kirsten Bråten Berg, one of the most important custodians of Norwegian traditional song. Throughout eleven songs, Kvitravn discusses Northern sorcery, spirit-animals, shadows, nature and animism, the wisdom and meanings of certain myths, various Norse spiritual concepts, and the relation between sage and songs.

The masterful Norwegian storytellers shall release their brand new album Kvitravn in the following formats on June 5.

“Kvitravn itself is an album I’ve been thinking about writing for a long time,” says Wardruna’s Einar Selvik (back in March 2020) of Kvitravn, the powerful new album by Norway’s atmospheric weavers of tales, issued worldwide on 21 January 2021. “For me, this album points out more clearly than ever what has been the ultimate goal or motivation of Wardruna since the beginning – taking old thoughts that still carry relevance and creating something new with them.” Einar explains further…

“Kvitravn – First Flight of the White Raven is an audio-visual ‘live-in-studio’ recording that was broadcasted online, as the release show of the Kvitravn album. It was recorded in a time when it was not allowed to perform in front of an audience, which made it very important for me that the recording itself truly captured the energy of a live performance. What you hear, is what we performed in that moment in that room. No re-recordings or autotune was done in the afterwork. Just like for a regular concert, the set list was carefully put together with a selection of songs from all our albums, including a handful songs from the new album, which we performed for the very first time. On the day of recording, we all stood together in the same room for the first time in over a year. Everyone came focused and well prepared and the energy felt like no time had passed. I hope you will agree!”

Kvitravn translates as “white raven” which, as Einar puts it, is also his artist name. “The raven is an animal I have a totemic relationship with, which is why I chose that for myself,” he explains. “But although this album is in a sense more personal and more down to earth than before, it is also quite obscure. I delve into the philosophical, the esoteric, the Nordic myths and how these old traditions define human nature and nature itself. So the white raven was not chosen as the title because of my name, but more due to the ideas which inspired me to take that name in the first place.”

As both Kvitravn and the live-in-studio album Kvitravn – First Flight of the White Raven unfold, age-old Nordic instruments such as the goat- horn, Kravik-lyre, and the taglharpa sustain the journey. Vocals soar, hanging in the air like mist coating mountaintops and valleys alike. This is a realm where, on Kvitravn album opener Synkverv, a harp draws a traveler into the heart of a mountain, an experience bringing a new sense of understanding. There is, of course, the Kvitravn who offers guidance. The Skugge shows that answers to what is the truth may lie within.

Then, there is the wolf of Grá, a reminder that humans and creatures have existed side-by-side in a mutual, though wary, relationship. Indeed, a wolflike spirit accompanies the narrator in Fylgjutal. Munin – one of the Norse God Odin’s watchful ravens – is in flight, a Kvit hjort is encountered and songs spring from the environment Viseveiding.

Progress through the ritual invocation of Ni and Vindavlarljod’s interplay of song, the wind and the landscape leads to Andvevarljod where the album culminates with a plea to nine norns, the female presences who regulate destiny. “The lyrics are very important,” stresses Einar. “Kvitravn is inspired by oral traditions, an oral culture. In an oral society, words, poetry and even runes, where it was written, had a great power. I find the traditions of old Norse poetry thought provoking and inspirational. The truth was not served on a platter but through questions, riddles, and abstract images. They allow you to put multiple meanings into things, which leaves a lot of room for listeners to find their own meanings.” He discloses one meaning though. In the context of the Kvitravn album, the wolf is a messenger from nature, from mother nature. Predators have a value, and if it has a value, it has a cost. Allowing them to roam has cost for us, but the value of them roaming is greater. It’s not healthy to feel untouchable, like we want to do today. The problems we get from messing with ecosystems, all these imbalances. We do lots of things to try and fix it but not the obvious thing which is to make the ecosystem complete. While nothing is necessarily obvious with Wardruna, the years since 2009’s debut album Runaljod – gap var Ginnunga have seen increasing international success. Runaljod – Yggdrasil came in 2013 and was followed in 2016 by Runaljod – Ragnarok. Each was part of a trilogy, with individual songs inspired by one of the 24 characters of the Elder Futhark, the earliest runic alphabet in which each character symbolises a specific trait as well as a letter and spoken sound. Runaljod – Ragnarok climbed to the top spot in America on Billboard’s World Music charts and did so in Canada too. In 2018, the low key, live-in-the-studio Skald was released. For Wardruna’s fourth album, Einar had taken a similar approach to his solo shows with a stripped-back, intimate sound. From its beginning in 2002, Wardruna drew from Einar’s absorption in Norway’s pre-Christian culture. He grew up north of Bergen on the island Osterøy and began reading about runes and Nordic history in his early teens, and soon came to the idea of making his own music in sympathy with what he was learning. Following years of working with various metal bands, the need to follow his own musical vision grew and Einar increasingly plunged into the Nordic world’s traditional music. “It is not Norwegian folk music I am doing,” he states. “But there are definitely many elements in Wardruna which can be traced to Nordic traditional music, both in vocal and instrumental tonality and techniques. Primarily, I believe these are elements, which originated in times before what is normally defined as traditional music. Although my aim is not necessarily to copy or recreate music from any specific time period, I aim to start from solid ground before venturing into the creative and intuitive processes. My approach is multidisciplinary, with a scholarly application to primary sources along with my own knowledge and experience as a performing musician, poet and practitioner.” The combination of Einar’s deep knowledge – he has lectured in academic settings on the old Norse world and its music – and his hands-on approach attracted the attention of the creators of the History Channel’s TV series Vikings. From its second series, in 2014, Einar came on board as co-composer alongside the show´s main composer Trevor Morris and worked on the programme up to its fifth series, which aired in 2019. He even appeared on-screen in a couple of episodes. Ever-busy, there was also 2016’s Skuggsjá – A Piece for Mind & Mirror where Einar and Ivar Bjørnson of Enslaved fashioned a chronicle of Norway for the anniversary of its constitution and, the next year, the intense Snake Pit Poetry release, credited as an Einar Selvik solo project. Einar contributed music for the official soundtrack of the game franchise Assassin’s Creed Valhalla® alongside the BAFTA Award-winning Danish composer Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s Creed, Ezio Trilogy) and American composer Sarah Schachner (Assassin’s Creed Origins), released worldwide on November 17, 2020 by Lakeshore Records in partnerhip with Ubisoft, followed by numerous collections of unreleased music and acoustic tracks from Einar Selvik in connection with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla® (also released by Lakeshore Records in partnership with Ubisoft) between November 2020 and December 2021. Throughout, Einar has been very protective of his music. He explains, “I don’t compromise my art. No one on the outside has any say. That is something I would never give away, even an inch.” All Wardruna’s releases were issued on independent labels, including his own imprint, ByNorse Music. Kvitravn and Kvitravn – First Flight of the White Raven are released by Music For Nations/Sony Music/Columbia Germany/ByNorse Music. “The people at Sony saw that what we are doing has a value which needs to be treated differently to a lot of other music projects,” reveals Einar, saying the new approach is a practical thing. “It was the right time to take it one step further. It’s been on my mind for a long time. I’m very happy I’m working with people who understand Wardruna.” The lack of any restrictions is confirmed by Kvitravn’s length. Wardruna’s albums have all been long, and the new album is no exception. “I never plan the length of an album,” he laughs. “Economically, it would make sense to make a single vinyl!” Lindy-Fay Hella is a constant both in the studio and on stage but, again confirming the autonomy, there are the album’s guests. On Kvitravn’s climax “Andvevarljod,” she and Einar are joined by the eminent traditional singer Kirsten Bråten Berg, and her daughter Sigrid. The similarly significant multi-instrumentalist Unni Løvlid also appears, alongside the more-recently fêted vocalist Ingebjørg Lognvik Reinholdt. Regular Wardruna collaborator, the Goat’s horn and willow flute player Eilif Gundersen is also present on the album. For Kvitravn – First Flight of the White Raven live-in-studio experience, Einar assembled a slightly different cast of musicians, the line-up listed below:

Einar Selvik: Vocals, Lyre, Taglharpa, Flute, Goat horn, Lur, Drums, Percussion Lindy-Fay Hella: Vocals Eilif Gundersen: Lur, Goat horn, Flute, Backing Vocals Arne Sandvoll: Percussion, Backing vocals Hans Christian Dalgaard: Drums, Percussion, Backing vocals John Stenersen: Moraharpe, Backing Vocals Katrine Stenbekk: Vocals

Pondering such partnerships, Einar explains, the creative concept of Wardruna has never changed. The subject, the themes of the song, decide what is needed – the singers, the instruments, the sounds. Whatever feels right is right. Asked how he will approach bringing Kvitravn to audiences he pauses. After a few beats, he says, “The album is a visual soundscape. The instruments fit into a very grandiose soundscape. The music suits a very simple, atmospheric visual side.” He laughs again. “It will sound very big.” This is exactly the intention of what fans will be able to experience on this new release of Kvitravn – First Flight of the White Raven. Rescheduled Wardruna live dates shall now commence in March 2022, starting in the UK and taking in some grand concert halls and spaces. Go HERE for full listings. About the tour Einar comments “It has been more than two years since we last gave a performance in front of an audience. Needless to say, this long and unwanted hibernation has made us very exited to finally be able to realistically plan our return to the stage.”

To give it wings, the live version of "Solringen" is already available in digital formats and on YouTube .

Einar comments: "This was recorded in a time when it was not allowed to perform in front of an audience, which made it very important for me that the recording itself truly captured the energy of a live performance. What you will hear, is what we performed in that moment in that room. I hope you will agree!"

Pre-orders for the new release are available as limited box set, 2CD, 2LP and digital release on wardrunashop.com

Andvevarljod Single Out Now! • 23 Dec. 2020

The song is a central piece on the new album "Kvitravn". It explores the Nordic deities of fate; the Norns, the spinning of life threads and the Norse and Sámi common idea that a person’s spirit is connected to wind, both before and after birth. The song features guest appearances by a small group of prominent Norwegian traditional singers, Kirsten Bråten Berg, Sigrid Berg, Unni Løvlid, Ingebjørg Reinholdt alongside our own Lindy-Fay Hella.

Einar Selvik comments: "On a personal level, Andvevarljod (Song of the Spirit-Weavers) is a song I hold very dear and it was also my starting point on the new album. Musically, it gives voice to very old song traditions and on top of that it is voiced by some of the most central reasons why these traditions are being kept alive for us and the generations to come. So, special thanks go out to our guest singers for lending us their talents and for the invaluable work they do for keeping our traditions alive!"

Stream the song here: https://orcd.co/andvevarljod

Also, to mark the winter solstice Einar performed a skaldic version of Andvevarljod. The video is available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/99N6XWUeKdg

Kvitravn Music Video and Single Out Now! • 16 Oct. 2020

Kvitravn (White Raven) is the title track from our upcoming album. It’s a song that explores traditions of animal-guides and the symbolism and legends of sacred white animals found in Nordic- and other cultures all over the world. These highly regarded ghostly creatures, whether a raven, snake, bear, moose, reindeer, elephant or lion – are in animist traditions seen as prophetic, divine messengers, and guardians representing renewal, purity and a bridge between worlds.

Watch on YouTube or Vimeo

The lyrics and English translations are found in the description below the video. The song is also available on all major digital music platforms.

The video was shot in various locations in Norway and Russia and was produced by Ragnarok Film – the same team responsible for our previous video for the song “Lyfjaberg”. Being fully aware of how rare it is to come across white ravens, we knew from the start that this would be an ambitious and challenging task to pull off. However, fate seemed to be on our side in this and the “impossible” piece of the puzzle fell into place as if gifted from the divine. We hope you will enjoy and give it wings!

The full album is set for worldwide release on January 22, 2021 and can be pre-ordered in various formats and bundles from the following stores:

Lyfjaberg Video and 12" Vinyl Single • 5 Jun. 2020

To climb the Healing-mountain is a journey for the mind and spirit as much as the feet and body. Anything of true value, comes at a true cost.

Lyfjaberg was mainly filmed in the mountains at Tustna in Norway. We shot the video in early May, when all of a sudden winter decided to return with full strength and we ended up wading in half a meter snow for three days and nights. On many levels, the process of making of this video reflected the meaning of the song itself. We all had to climb a few of our inner mountains to get it done. Huge thanks to Ragnarok Film and everyone involved for jumping into this project with full force from day one. We hope you will endure the walk and enjoy the song!

The lyrics and English translations are found in the description below the video. The song is also available on all digital platforms and you can even order a special limited 12” vinyl here:

Lyfjaberg • 26 May 2020

When circumstances forced us to postpone the release of our upcoming album “Kvitravn”, it was clear to us that we still wanted to release new music. Music and art can potentially carry great meaning in times of uncertainty. We decided that now was not the time to stay silent and headed straight back into creative mode and the studio to write and record the song "Lyfjaberg".

The Old Norse word Lyfjaberg means Healing-hill or Healing-mountain and is known from Norse mythology and the Eddic poem Fjölsvinnsmál as a place of comfort and cure for the "sick and sore" who manage to climb the mountain and bear offerings at the shrines there – a gift demands a gift in return.

Einar Selvik comments: "The song expresses that climbing a tough mountain, both in reality and metaphorically, is a mental as well as a physical effort. I have tried to write this journey up the mountain as one for the mind and spirit as much as the feet and body. Anything of true value, comes at a true cost."

Lyfjaberg will be available on all digital platforms on June 5th.

Grá Music Video Out Now • 21 Feb. 2020

Grá (Grey) is our song to the wolf. It speaks about the ancient bond and relationship between man and wolf. It seeks to address and acknowledge the cost and responsibility of being part of, and not above nature. Once again, we were given the opportunity go to Finland and work with a beautiful and brave rescued wolf called Tihu and her caretakers. The video was directed by our friend Tuukka Koski and his team at Koski Syväri.

About the album: Following an intensive period in the studio, "Kvitravn" musically continues where the Runaljod trilogy left off, yet it marks a distinct evolution in our sound. The album features a broad selection of both traditional and historical instruments such as Kravik-lyre, Trossingen-lyre, Taglharpa, Sotharpa, Langeleik, Crwth, Goat-horn, Lur, Bronze-lur, flute, Moraharpa and the record also features guest appearances by a small group of prominent traditional singers, spearheaded by Kirsten Bråten Berg, one of the most important custodians of Norwegian traditional song. Throughout eleven songs, "Kvitravn" discusses Northern sorcery, spirit-animals, shadows, nature and animism, the wisdom and meanings of certain myths, various Norse spiritual concepts, and the relation between sage and songs.

Einar Selvik comments the album: "To recite and copy the past is not very difficult, but to understand and integrate ancient thoughts, tools and methods with real purpose into a creation that is relevant to the modern era is truly challenging and remains our prime goal in our work. Although the album carries a variant of my own totemic artist name, it has, in this context, little to do with me but rather refers to the symbolism and legends of sacred white animals found in Nordic and other cultures all over the world. These highly regarded ghostly creatures, whether a raven, snake, bear, moose, reindeer, elephant or lion - are in animist traditions seen as prophetic, divine messengers, and guardians representing renewal, purity and a bridge between worlds."

Runaljod Trilogy Book and 3CD • 15 Nov. 2019

2019 marks ten years since Wardruna released the first part of the ‘Runaljod’ trilogy. We are thrilled to celebrate its conclusion and see all three albums into a special limited book edition including original lyrics together with English translations and exclusive pictures.

Einar Selvik comments: ‘Ten years since the first release but almost twenty years since the first recording was made. It has been quite a journey so far, yet it feels like we just got started. The Runaljod albums are originally released on two different record labels and I am happy to collaborate with Indie Recordings and my own label ByNorse for a license and the opportunity to FINALLY release the complete trilogy, the way it should, as one single product.’

The Runaljod Trilogy Book + 3CD is available now in the Wardruna online stores. The first 1000 copies include a bookmark autographed by Einar Selvik.

2020 Tour Dates and New Music in the Works • 11 Oct. 2019

‘2019 marks ten years since Wardruna’s first release and in the spring, a new chapter will start. I don’t wish to reveal too much at this point but can say that we are now deep into the process of writing and recording new music. For the upcoming album we are partnering up with Sony Music / Columbia Records. This is a new steppingstone for us and I am very confident that this new addition to the team will give us new opportunities to further develop our art and take it to the next level. Wardruna has been a DIY to-the-bone kind of project since the very beginning. Slowly and patiently evolving. Working hard and always keeping the art itself as the primary decisive factor. This will never change for us, and so it feels great to have top notch people on our team that also embrace this way of working. When Wardruna rise up from the current studio-hibernation and initiate the concert-year of 2020, it is clearly allowed to hope for new music!’ Einar Selvik - Wardruna.

Hugsjá – World Premiere in Bergen • 15 Feb. 2017

Bergen International Festival will feature new music by Wardruna’s Einar Selvik and Ivar Bjørnson from Enslaved in May–June this year.

New work by Einar Selvik (Wardruna, Vikings) and Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved) will be featured by the Bergen International Festival in May–June this year.

Selvik and Bjørnson’s new collaborative endeavours Nordvegen and Hugsjá continues to combine the ancient and contemporary with Norse and Norwegian poetry, accompanied by instruments from the Stone Age up to the present day.

A series of concerts under the name Nordvegen (‘the northern road’ – an ancient shipping route connecting Norway to the rest of world for some 3000 years), will be performed in four venues along the west coast of Norway in late May and early June. The audience will be taken on a spectacular journey along this route in a musical declaration of love to Norwegian coastal culture and Norse history. Bjørnson and Selvik have designed the concerts inspired by local history for each of these places. The Nordvegen concerts create an acoustic and intimate basis for the grandiose commissioned work Hugsjá, which will receive its world premiere Bergen concert hall Grieghallen on May 31.

The word hugsjá means to remember – literally ‘to see in the mind’. Focused on ideas, traditions and instruments from our Norse past, the work recounts Norwegian history while drawing lines to the present.

Tickets are on sale from February 15.

Cruise ship was right to ditch the late passengers in africa, travel writer says.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Eight people have accused Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) of abandoning them on a tiny island in Africa after a private tour ran late and the group missed the embarkation cut-off time.

Four of the group are elderly and another is pregnant, and though the ship was still at anchor, they were denied boarding.

The ship, the Norwegian Dawn, set sail without them — and it was right to do so.

Once, I was late to check in for a flight. I jumped out of the taxi, sprinted to the counter (which is no mean feat when you’re hauling luggage) and arrived at the desk sweating bullets, prepared to get on my knees and grovel if it meant I’d be allowed through.

I began to tell my sob story to the lady at the desk, heart hammering and lungs gasping for air, when she politely interrupted and shook her head.

Norwegian CRUISELINE

In the nicest way possible, she said this: “Stiff bickies.” (OK, yes, I’ve paraphrased.)

Sure, the plane was still at the airport, no more than a few hundred meters from where I was standing. However, the luggage had already been loaded, the manifest had already been finalized, and the other passengers were already boarding.

There was no way they were going to let me board, nor should they have.

You see, I had been on a whale-watching tour about two-and-a-half hours south of the airport — hey, it was my last day, I wanted to make it count.

I planned it to perfection, except for one detail: We spotted a playful pod right at the very end, so the captain offered to give us some bonus time to enjoy the view.

With one eye on the magnificent mammals and the other on my watch, I held on to a flicker of hope that I might make it.

I jumped on the bus back to town, flagged down a cab and asked the driver to hurry. I launched out of the car like a 100m sprinter launches out of starting blocks and ran into the terminal.

Alas, my proverbial ship had sailed.

Was it a bummer? Absolutely. But imagine delaying the other 158 or so passengers scheduled to depart on the Boeing 737, asking the crew to extend their shifts, or holding the plane and disrupting airport traffic … all so little old me could drop off my bags, scurry through security, and find my gate.

Imagine the awkwardness if I stepped onto that plane. What do you say? “Sorry, guys, my bad, lol.”

Keep up with The Post's coverage of the Norwegian Cruise debacle

  • Eight Norwegian Cruise passengers, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, were stranded on an African island without money and vital medications after the vessel left port without them.
  • A spokesperson for the cruise line claimed the passengers were left on the island “on their own or with a private tour” and missed the “all-aboard time” by over an hour, according to the company.
  • Americans Jill Campbell and her husband, Jay Campbell, said they are unsure whether they even want to resume the 20-day voyage after Norwegian Cruise Lines forgot about its “basic duty of care.”
  • The eight passengers raced through seven different countries over a span of 48 hours to make it to Senegal, where the ship docked Tuesday morning,
  • Doug and Violeta Sanders, a stranded Australian couple, have spoken out about their ordeal , saying it was “the worst experience of our lives.”
  • Julie Lenkoff, 80,  suffered a stroke during an excursion on the cruise — and was left “alone” and “helpless” to find her way back to the US, according to her family.
  • COLUMN: Cruise ship was right to ditch the late passengers in Africa

Check out The Post’s tips on what to do if you’re left stranded like the Norwegian Cruise passengers

That doesn’t even scratch the surface of a cruise ship’s operations. Norwegian Dawn can accommodate 3,372 people — 2,340 passengers and 1,032 crew — and this group of eight expected it to wait?

A ship’s departure time isn’t exactly a mystery.

I sailed on Norwegian Dawn in February and the departure time was published in NCL’s Freestyle Daily newsletter the night before and announced over the loudspeaker multiple times in the morning.

It was also posted on signs at the doors where guests disembark.

The golden rule is clear: Make sure you’re back on time, or the ship may sail without you.

So what do you do if you’re left behind? Generally there are two options: Either catch up with the ship at a later port or head home.

If you’re lucky, you’ll have brought your essentials with you — your passport, phone, credit card and medication — because all of your belongings will stay on board until the end.

Please don’t get me wrong, of course I’m sympathetic to the distress of those who were left in a foreign country without the safety of the ship.

It would be scary and stressful to figure out next steps, especially for the members of the group with higher needs, and disappointing to miss out on their vacation.

However, the unfortunate reality is that ships can’t always wait.

Private tours are a whole separate issue, because while the ship will wait for official tours — those which have been organized by the cruise ship operator — to return, all bets are off for passengers taking their shore excursions into their own hands.

Unofficial tours can be slightly cheaper than those on the ship’s itinerary, with slightly more availability, so they can be attractive. However, while operators will do their best to stick to scheduled times, all bets are off once you board that bus and leave the port.

Think of it like booking multiple legs of a trip with different airlines. They’re not in the same network, they don’t owe each other anything, and they can’t guarantee that you’ll make your connection. Say the bus breaks down. Maybe someone wanders off and takes ages to return.

Perhaps the group lingers over a delicious lunch. Someone might need to stop at an ATM or a bathroom. You could get stuck in traffic. Or maybe your tour will be like mine and you’ll see something incredible that simply makes you want to pause.

And so, eight passengers were left in São Tomé and Príncipe , Africa’s second-smallest country.

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time,” NCL said in a statement, adding that it is communicating with the guests about their next steps. It’s harsh but fair, especially since the other 3,364 (or so) people on board got it right.

Kirrily Schwarz recently sailed on Norwegian Dawn as a guest of Norwegian Cruise Line.

Stranded Australian cruise passengers describe ‘worst experience of our lives’

A n Australian couple stranded on an African island after being abandoned by a Norwegian Cruise Lines ship has spoken out about their ordeal – saying it was “the worst experience of our lives.”

Doug and Violeta Sanders said they had to fend for themselves after a private tour they took during a stop last week on the island of São Tomé ran past the time they needed to return to the Norwegian Dawn and they weren’t allowed to board, Sky News Australia reported.

“It’s been the worst experience of our lives to be abandoned like that in a strange country, can’t speak the language – it’s Portuguese and African,” Violeta told “Seven’s Sunrise.”

“We have no money, our credit cards aren’t accepted,” she added.

They and the other six passengers were not allowed to get back on the vessel, which sailed off without them.

The stranded passengers were helped by the US Embassy in Angola and boarded a flight to Gambia in hopes of joining the ship in Banjul, but it was unable to dock due to low tide and moved on to Senegal.

A Norwegian Cruise Line rep said the passengers were on a private tour, not one organized by the company.

“We work closely with local tour operators to ensure excursions are planned to our schedule to guarantee timely arrivals back to the port.  The excursion this group was on was not organized through us but on their own.  As such, we are not in communication with their private tour operator,” the spokesperson said.

Attorney James Diamond from TWC Lawyers said it is a “hard and fast rule” that a ship can leave once a final call has been made.

“They pay a lot of money for docking fees, and renting out the space,” he told the program. “They have times that they have to leave, those times are published and unfortunately, I know it’s morally incorrect, but they do have the right to leave.”

Among those stranded were Americans Jill and Jay Campbell.

The passengers raced through seven different countries in 48 hours to make it to Dakar, Senegal, where they finally got back on the ship, according to Sky News.

Taylor Swift built an empire on relatable lyrics. Will her billionaire status change that?

Taylor Swift leans back and closes her eyes on stage in an orange dress as lights blur around her

For Swifties, it was never a matter of if Taylor Swift would become a billionaire, but when.

In its  latest rich list, Forbes estimates Swift has a $1.1 billion fortune and says the megastar is the first artist to achieve billionaire status solely from songwriting and performing.

Other artists who have hit the milestone – including Rihanna and Jay-Z – earned their massive wealth in part thanks to fashion and cosmetics brands, alcohol companies or entertainment holdings.

In mere weeks Swift will treat her fans to yet another album – The Tortured Poets Department – which will fuel another merchandising spectacle.

But by building an empire on her vulnerable lyrics and "big sister" persona, will Swift's new billionaire status impact how Swifties relate to their idol?

The (super rich) girl next door

Taylor Swift smiles and clasps the hands of a fan at one of her shows.

"Taylor has an amazing relationship with her fans, or at least an amazing illusion of a relationship with her fans," says Georgia Carroll, who holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Sydney where she specialised in fandom.

"It's something she's cultivated since the earliest days of her career, where she's really presented herself as not quite a girl next door, but kind of as the aspirational big sister or cool friend who is going through the same things as you are."

Swift's sprawling discography captures the plethora of emotions and experiences, from the giddiness of first love (Fearless, Speak Now) to the rollercoaster that is your 20s (Red, 1989) to darker, more adult themes (Reputation, Midnights).

"She's taken her fans on this lifelong journey where it does feel as though you're kind of getting this peek into her life and her diary, which really builds a connection with her fans," Dr Carroll says.

This all feeds back into the concept of parasocial relationships, which is, as Dr Carroll explains, "anytime a fan feels as though they know a celebrity because of messages through the media, from social media and, in Taylor's instance, through her music."

"So you feel as though you actually know her even though she's a stranger."

'You can see those dollar signs rolling in'

Since 2019, Swift has released eight albums – four being re-releases – and her next album is due out this month.

In 2023 her Eras Tour hit the $1 billion mark after selling a staggering 4.35 million tickets across 60 tour dates, according to the Associated Press.

Taylor Swift sings over her shoulder into a microphone as her hair blows around her against a fiery back drop

To add to its success, the concert film grossed a further $261 million worldwide and secured the highest opening weekend for a concert film.

For Dr Carroll, "nobody is surprised" about Swift's new billionaire status.

"It's been something that has been on the cards for quite a while especially with the Eras Tour and the Eras Tour film making her so much money and all of the stories around the records that they've broken and her economic impact," she says.

"In the last five years she's released this crazy amount of content which obviously has multiple album versions, multiple vinyl versions, merchandise alongside it.

"It's been this trajectory in the last five years, but especially the last 12 to 18 months, where you can see those dollar signs rolling in for her."

Swift's strategy of releasing limited edition versions of vinyl albums – each with a different cover, colour or bonus track – has drawn criticism over the years.

The debate fired up again this week when Billie Eilish expressed her frustration at overconsumption in the music industry.

"It's some of the biggest artists in the world making f**king 40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing just to get you to keep buying more. It's so wasteful," she told Billboard .

Eilish later clarified her comments and said she wasn't singling anyone out.

'Do I need to give a billionaire more of my money?'

Dr Carroll says while Swifties have a strong connection to their idol, it's the current economic environment that may have them pausing for thought rather than Swift's billionaire status.

Young women dressed in purple and sparkles line up at a merchandise booth where Taylor Swift shirts are sold

"We have The Tortured Poets Department coming out in three weeks so that's going to come with a new wave of merchandise and then the Eras Tour is starting up again in Europe," she said.

"I think we are reaching the point where fans are kind of like, 'The cost of living is going up, my rent is increasing, my mortgage is increasing, do I need to give a billionaire more of my money?'"

"But at the same time, her fans are so connected to her and so willing to support her that they see it as their choice."

"The argument I make is that the way her marketing is structured, they are in a way manipulating the fans, but it is the fans' choice at the end of the day and the fans can say, 'You know what, I can't afford this.'

"The argument the fans make is that it makes them happy and they like supporting her."

Dr Carroll adds the biggest impact Swift's billionaire status will have is by giving critics "more of a provable backbone."

"I think it's going to just give legs to any critiques and arguments that exist and the discussions that are had by people who aren't necessarily in the fandom."

But Dr Carroll says when it comes to fans spending money, "not so much [do] they see it as supporting A Billionaire with a capital A-B".

"They see it as supporting Taylor Swift, somebody who has been there for them over the years and who has brought them joy and brought their life meaning and they want to kind of continue that relationship."
