However, Zachary Taylor is a coral beach, so you will need water shoes because of the rocky sea bottom, but you can purchase one at the concessionaire in the park’s picnic area if you forget to bring a pair. You can also rent snorkeling equipment there.

While snorkeling, you might encounter parrot fishes, lobsters, yellowtail snappers, and corals. Also, fishing is allowed only on the park’s west side, along Key West Shipping Channel . 

But for some offshore activity, stroll the park to learn from the tour guides how Fort Taylor, built in the 1800s guarded Key West’s harbor during the Civil and Spanish-American wars.

Also, you will see the largest collection of seacoast guns here. Finally, the park has an oceanfront Cayo Hueso Café (open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) serving delicious local beach cuisine. You can also get beach wheelchairs here. 

15. North Ocean Park Beach, Pompano Beach

Located in Pompano Beach, this beach is the perfect destination if you’re seeking a tranquil atmosphere with enough activities to keep the entire family occupied. 

North Ocean Park beach is a serene stretch of beautiful golden sand framed by golden dunes and designed for wind-driven sports like kitesurfing.

Thanks to its warm temperature of 71°F in January, you will also find many visitors surfing, snorkeling, and diving. 

Long and wide, the beach is spacious and ideal for sunbathing, beachcombing, wildlife watching, and birding. It’s also a nesting ground for sea turtles.

You’ll find amenities like a volleyball court, restrooms, showers, and picnic tables to heighten your experience.

Plus, the beautiful Hillsboro Lighthouse is visible from here and offers gorgeous photo ops.

I’ve spent lots of time researching and traveling through the Sunshine State in order to find you the warmest swim spots to visit during the winter months.

January is the perfect time of year to visit Florida’s warm, white sand beaches because the average temperature of the water is between 69º and 77ºF.

The sunny days and warm weather will be a welcome break from ice, snow, and gloom.

Best Beaches In Florida In January!

1. South Beach Park, Vero Beach

If you enjoy waves and the challenge of stronger currents, South Beach Park in Vero Beach, in Central Florida, is a great spot to visit.

Enjoy time on a barrier island. Relax on the white sands, play on the volleyball courts, and have fun riding the waves in the Atlantic Ocean

South Beach Park offers excellent amenities, including manned lifeguard stations, picnic areas, walking paths, restrooms, and grassy areas.

You can even try your hand at fishing.

2. Higgs Beach, Key West

If you’re looking for tranquil sandy beaches in Key West, look no further than Higgs Beach.

This lovely spot is a perfect place to relax, read a book, and take a dip in the emerald water.

If you have the gear, you can even go snorkeling along the barrier for a chance to see colorful fish, small sharks, and conches.

Palm trees rise gracefully along the edge of the beach, making it even more picturesque.

You can also play beach volleyball and fish from the small pier.

3. Lovers Key State Park, Fort Myers

Nature lovers and those who enjoy water activities will have a blast at Lovers Key State Park near Fort Myers.

This secluded collection of barrier islands is a paradise consisting of mangroves, crystal-clear waters, and beautiful scenery.

Lovers Key faces the Gulf of Mexico and is one of the best places to kayak through mangroves.

Keep an eye out for dolphins, manatees, and shorebirds.

This state park is a popular destination at any time of year, whether you visit in December or the summer months.

4. Bowman’s Beach, Sanibel Island

Turquoise waters, sand dunes, nature trails, and great amenities make Bowman’s Beach on Sanibel Island one of the best Florida beaches to visit in January.

One of my personal favorite beaches in southern Florida, Bowman’s Beach isn’t surrounded by hotels and condos. Instead, it features sweeping views of the coastline.

Stake out on the sand, go shelling, and set up a hearty lunch spread at one of the picnic tables.

Note:  There is no food or water available for sale here, so be sure to bring your own.

If you enjoy water sports, Bowman’s Beach is the right place to be.

Use the canoe or kayak launch to get into the water.

This beach is a wonderful place to go shelling.

This South Florida gem is a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxing vibe, eat delicious Miami cuisine, and enjoy an evening walk.

Swim, take your kids to the playground near 3rd Street, and soak in the sunshine.

Note that this beach does get quite busy, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.

9. Smathers Beach, Key West

If you’re in search of warm Florida beaches in January, Smathers Beach could make for a great time.

This is one of the most popular beaches in the Florida Keys–an area known for rocky shores. 

Fortunately, Smathers Beach is kept well stocked with white sand.

The blue-green water, dancing palm trees, and beautiful vistas of the Atlantic make this a prime place to spend a day.

You’ll want to wear water shoes due to the rocks near the shore.

10. Siesta Beach, Siesta Key

Siesta Beach on Siesta Key is another one of the best beaches in Florida in January.

You and your family will love the playground, tennis courts, and careful vigilance of the lifeguards.

Stock up on food and drinks at the concession stand, make use of the public restrooms, and stop by the gift shop for a bit of shopping.

Surf’s up! If you love surfing or want to give it a shot, Cocoa Beach is ready and waiting.

This lovely beach offers perfect waves for surfing.

It’s also got a great sandy bottom, plenty of places to rent boards, and surfing instructors available for hire.

There are lifeguards during the high season, umbrellas and beach chairs for rent, and electric beach bikes.

Take extra water to rinse off with after your time in the ocean.

12. Sandspur Beach, Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda State Park has two great beaches. The first is Calusa Beach, which is right next to the Bahia Honda Bridge.

It’s an ideal place to snorkel, though you have to watch out for jet skiers.

The other, Sandspur Beach, features one mile of sand and is narrow and tranquil.

Sandspur Beach is not usually crowded and features warm water and sand that’s cool underfoot.

There is plenty of parking, a snack shop, and clean bathrooms.

You might even find some sea urchin shells, seashells, and bits of coral.

Note: watch out for blue bottle jellyfish in the seagrass.

13. Panama City Beach, Panama City Beach

Enjoy a beautiful 27-mile-long beach in Panama City Beach.

The beach, which shares its name with the city, is a great option for fun activities such as snorkeling, swimming, parasailing, jet skiing, and spotting dolphins.

This beach is clean with gorgeous turquoise water and cotton-white sand.

Keep in mind that you may have to travel a ways to find restrooms.

14. Manatee Beach, Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island’s Manatee Beach is an amazing beach featuring pillow-soft quart sand and expansive vistas of the Gulf of Mexico.

Sunbathe, swim, order a drink at the tiki bar, or indulge in a delicious ice cream.

Manatee Beach has great amenities, including bathrooms, showers, a playground, picnic tables, grills, and bike racks.

There are umbrellas and loungers for rent if you can’t bring your own.

There’s plenty of room for everyone, but if you want your own space, you might need to walk a little way out from the parking lot and its respective amenities.

15. St. Pete Beach, St. Petersburg

If you like the sound of a resort city, St. Pete Beach could be the perfect destination.

Enjoy the fabulous oceanfront, then explore the shops and restaurants. Finish off with  a sunset boat cruise.

St. Pete Beach is a great clean beach with beautiful water and nice sand.

The waves range from mild to medium and are usually fine for young kids.

Parking is easy, as there is plenty of room.

Keep in mind that if you get hungry, you may have to cross the street to find drink and snack options.

16. Crescent Beach, St. Augustine

Crescent Beach is just south of St. Augustine and features a lovely half-moon-shaped shoreline.

The sand is hard-packed, making it perfect for riding bikes, playing frisbee, working out, or even driving on the beach.

You can also go swimming, tanning, or try metal detecting.

This is also a prime spot for boogie boarding, boating, and surfing.

You can even ride horses here if you apply for a special permit.

If you go in January and fancy a drive on the beach, you can do so free of charge.

Just make sure you follow the driving rules to keep all the beachgoers safe.

17. Ocean Reef Park, West Palm Beach

Explore the underwater world at Ocean Reef Park in West Palm Beach.

This park is an incredible place to snorkel and free dive.

The coral reefs are quite close to the beach and feature 700 feet of marine life and coral beds.

If you prefer not to get wet, this is also a lovely place to walk or jog in the morning or evening and to check out the sand dunes from the boardwalks.

Amenities at Ocean Reef Park include shaded picnic areas, grills, restrooms, parking, and boardwalks.

18. Delray Public Beach, Delray Beach

Delray Beach is one of the most festive beach towns around. It’s extra walkable and has a fun vibe.

Build sandcastles, swim, bury each other in the powdery sand, swim in the ocean, and enjoy people-watching.

This beach is a favorite among locals who come for kitesurfing, parasailing, or drinking in the vistas.

Be sure to stop by the historic downtown to check out the restaurants, entertainment, and art shops.

19. Cannon Beach, Key Largo

If you’ve set your sights on Key Largo, Cannon Beach is one of the best beaches in the area.

It is located inside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

Although it is a bit rocky (water shoes are recommended), people do enjoy swimming here.

There’s even an old Spanish shipwreck some visitors swim out to.

This beach isn’t quite up to the white-sand crystalline-water standards of Miami’s beaches, but for the Keys–which tend to be rocky rather than sandy–it’s a nice spot. 

While you’re in the park, you can camp, go birding, and hike the nature trails.

20. Tigertail Beach, Marco Island

Some of the best beaches in the world are located on Marco Island. And chief among these is Tigertail Beach.

It gets its name from its thin curving shape which resembles a tiger tail.

Everything is very clean, and there is a place for picnics as well as restrooms.

Sand Dollar Spit, at the northern tip of the beach, is a great place to search for shells and sand dollars.

21. Red Reef Park, Boca Raton

Red Reef Park in Boca Raton is another fabulous place to visit in January.

You can surf, fish, snorkel, swim, and check out the nature center.

The shallow waters of the beach make it perfect for kids.

The park is a vibrant habitat for Choctawhatchee beach mice, who make their home among the dunes.

Birds and sea turtles lay nests in the sand. Swim, relax in the sunshine, or go exploring.

23. Delnor Wiggins State Park Beach, Naples

The beach at Delnor Wiggins State Park is a bustling spot for snorkeling, swimming, and enjoying the beauties of nature.

Although there used to be more amenities, the park is still recuperating from a hurricane, so things are a bit more basic than they used to be.

The water is great for kids, and parking is conveniently located close to the beach. No long treks here! 

Note: You might have to wait for parking if you go on a busy day, as the rangers can only let in so many cars at a time.

Swimming, snorkeling, and watching the sunset are three of the top things to do here.

24. New Smyrna Beach, New Smyrna Beach

If you’ve been to Disney World in Orlando and fancy a beach day, New Smyrna Beach is an hour and 12-minute drive northwest.

The sand and water are beautiful, little fish dart around your ankles, and you might even see a turtle.

This is a perfect beach to relax, drink chilled root beer, chat with friends, or read a book.

Tip:  Head over before 10 a.m. on the weekend to increase your chances of finding parking.

Notes:  Enjoy the water, but keep an eye on the flags.

Be sure to stay off the sand dunes as they are protected, and fill in any holes you dig in the sand so as not to hinder any sea turtles that come to lay eggs.

Taking a ferry ride out to Caladesi Island is a top-notch way to kick off a day of fun.

Tip: Take your own chairs and umbrellas to avoid costly rentals.

There are restrooms, showers, picnic areas, a restaurant, a small shop, and grills.

Just be sure to outfit the whole family with water shoes because this beach is man-made and has a rocky bed.

Below is the guide, and every beach selected is absolutely beautiful. I do tend to choose less-crowded beaches, and that is also reflected below. Also, Visit Florida is a great site packed with information.

Warmest Beaches in January In Florida: Southwest

Starting on the Southwest tip of the Sunshine State, the beaches below are all absolutely gorgeous. White sandy beaches. Turquoise blue, clear water. And plenty of things to do in the area.

I know this area as well as the Southeast part of the state very well and these are my top 3 picks:

1. Naples Beach: Naples, situated on the Gulf Coast, boasts stunning beaches with soft, white sands and clear, warm waters. The average January temperature hovers around 75°F (24°C), making it an ideal spot to soak up the sun.

Enjoy snorkeling, hiking, relaxing and so much more in Naples. The Naples Pier offers fantastic views and is perfect for a leisurely stroll.

2. Marco Island Beach: Marco? Polo! Marco? Polo! Known for its pristine beaches, Marco Island offers a tranquil getaway and is such a pretty beach to enjoy while on vacation.

With temperatures in January reaching around 73°F (23°C), the calm waters and beautiful sunsets make it a serene choice for those looking to get away as well as families. Tigertail Beach Park is great for nature lovers and families.

3. Fort Myers Beach: Rounding out the top 3 beach choices in the Southwest is Fort Myers Beach. This lively beach town along the Gulf Coast is popular for its wide shoreline and activities like parasailing and dolphin-watching tours.

In January, temperatures average around 73°F (23°C), providing a pleasant climate for beach goers. The surf temp, however, is the coldest for the year in January at 65°F.

Us Floridians tend to not go in the water at those temps, so you may have the beach to yourself.

Moving over to the other side of the state brings us to Southeast Florida. My old stomping grounds and many fond beach memories.

1. Miami Beach: Miami Beach is an iconic destination with high energy. This is a great option for a vacation that you want to be in the middle of everything because this city does not stop!

With January temperatures averaging around 74°F (23°C), it offers a mix of relaxation and excitement. South Beach is famous for its Art Deco architecture and lively atmosphere.

2. Fort Lauderdale Beach: Fort Lauderdale’s golden sands and azure waters are inviting year-round. January’s temperatures reach approximately 74°F (23°C), making it a prime location for beach activities and enjoying the bustling promenade along the coast.

My number one beach is nearby Hollywood Beach. There is so much to do, literally steps from the sand. Renting a 4-person bike for the broadwalk is fun for the family.

Also, Lauderdale By The Sea is nearby and another beautiful beach. When you visit the Fort Lauderdale area, you can easily hit several nearby beaches. Yes, it can get busy, but not as busy as nearby Miami.

3. Key West Beaches: The Florida Keys are a slice of heaven! Not on the mainland, Key West is the southernmost point of the United States.

There is nothing quite like Key West and if you have not visited yet, put it on your bucket list. With temperatures around 74°F (23°C) in January, this is probably the most warm beach on the list.

Enjoy the laid-back vibe, crystal-clear waters, and stunning sunsets make it worth the trip, especially at Mallory Square. Then hit one of the restaurants on the Wharf for dinner. So good!

The temperatures increase as you go farther south. The same goes for water temperatures; the farther south you go, the warmer the temperature. Based on observations over the past years, the ocean temperature is above 68°F/20°C during the winter months around South Florida which is comfortable enough for bathing. Hint, the water along its Gulf coast is even warmer! So, lose those mittens and scarves, grab sunscreen, and head to Florida beaches this winter.

Top 10 Warmest Beaches in Florida in December and January

Grayton beach state park.

Sparkling white sands and emerald-green waters form the backdrop for this portal to a perfect beach vacation in Sunshine State . Walk along the shore or swim in the crystal-clear waters of the beach, tucked into the northwest corner of Florida in South Walton. The water temperatures may be cool for most to enjoy, but not a problem for those who like likes refreshing swims.

Grayton Beach is unique for its coastal dune lakes, a geological rarity found in only a few places on earth. One of these lakes, Western Lake, even has an ideal paddle trail to kayak or canoe. You can also do freshwater and saltwater fishing in its brackish waters, while nature enthusiasts can hike or bike the winding trails through the coastal forest. Caladesi Island State Park

Long to get away from the hustle and bustle and savor the sights and sounds of undisrupted nature in winter? Head to Caladesi Island State Park. One of Florida’s few remaining undeveloped barrier islands, Caladesi lies off the Gulf coast near Dunedin and is accessible only by boat and is one of the less-crowded beaches in Florida . Wiggle your toes into the alabaster-white sands or dive into the calm azure waters that are pleasantly warm even during the winter months if you happen to be here on a nice sunny day.

You can enjoy the tranquil nature trails through the island’s interior. For an adventurous and immersive experience, go kayaking or canoeing into the mangrove forests and do some birding. Despite its secluded feel, the island is equipped with modern amenities for the whole family.

Fort De Soto Park

Set your sights on the stunning Fort De Soto Park if you plan a winter beach vacation in the US! Proclaimed best family beach by Parents Magazine in 2011, De Soto is located in the Gulf of Mexico near St. Petersburg. A virtual playground for the outdoor enthusiast, it offers a slew of activities from swimming and fishing to boating and kayaking.

The beach itself is secluded, and you may even find a stretch of sand all to yourself! If you’re lucky, you may spot dolphins splashing offshore. Fort Zachary Taylor Park

Every year on January 20th, residents of the area gather at the Pier 60 Daily Festival to celebrate the sunset. The event starts 2 hours before sunset and remains open after sunset. Artists and street performers also join the festival, making it a delightful event to participate in.

I personally love Rosemary Beach for its cobblestone streets, tree-lined avenues, and the trend of bicycle rides that make me absolutely adore this place. By the beach, you can rent chairs and spend hours enjoying the vibe.

1. orlando .

Orlando is one of the most popular family vacation destinations on the East Coast, and with good reason. Theme parks and day trips to the beach make this city a family fun spot for sure. 

Visiting Orlando, Florida, in January isn’t necessarily the best time to visit this part of the state. There may still be some holiday travelers hanging around and lots of people in search of sunshine. If you’re seeking a Vitamin D recharge, there’s no worry to fret; sunshine will be in abundance. And so will the crowds. 

Don’t let the crowds keep you away from Disney World and Downtown Disney. The cooler January temperatures make for the perfect theme park climate! It’s so much easier to enjoy the park without the stifling heat!

Another plus to visiting Orlando, the drive out to Clearwater is short enough that you can have a beach day if you’d like.

Destin, Florida, and the surrounding area have some of the best beaches in January . The beaches are stunning, and they provide a great and relaxing way to experience February and other winter months in Florida.

The water and beaches, especially those in Henderson Beach State Park , are beautiful. We camped in this state park during our last visit to Destin and had an amazing time. The beaches were not crowded, and my kids had fun completing the junior ranger program there.

Being in the northern part of the state, the weather here will be a bit cooler compared to some beaches further down the gulf and on the Atlantic Ocean Coast. But it’s still a wonderful warm beach escape where you can unwind and enjoy the sunshine.

3. Clearwater

Clearwater is lovely any time of the year and would make an excellent stop on a Florida road trip in January or even earlier in December . Home to more than just amazing Gulf Coast views and stunning Clearwater Beach, your family will love all the kid-friendly activities this city offers. 

Clearwater is one of the best places in Florida to visit in January and a personal favorite of our family, thanks to the beautiful weather. With highs in the mid-60s, it’s not super warm but comfortable. This is the perfect type of weather to enjoy a kayak tour or sunset cruise , which are some of the best things to do in Clearwater.

We visited Marco Island in the winter and had a great time. My kids loved the beautiful, calm water and had a great time playing at the beach. It really is one of the best family vacation spots along Florida’s Gulf Coast .

With daily temperatures in the low 70s, everyone was comfortable. It really is one of the best places to visit in Florida in January.  

Tigertail Beach is a wonderful place to spend a beach day while visiting Marco Island. The white sandy shores are perfect for shell hunting and beachcombing. We also love exploring the lagoon and mangrove trails. It’s a unique and fun adventure for our family, plus you can often spot some beautiful wildlife along the way.

After a fun day at the beach, grab some fresh seafood at one of the local Marco Island restaurants .

St. Andrew’s State Park  is a great beach alternative if you’re looking to escape the crowds at Panama City Beach. Jetty Beach is an amazing spot to spend the day with your family.

Expect slightly cooler temperatures here because it’s in the Florida panhandle, as opposed to warmer cities in the southern portion of the state. 

If you’re brave enough to venture into the water, you can enjoy the sand and surf, snorkel in the lagoon, or maybe even ride a  boogie board. You can still enjoy the beach from the shore if you’d rather not get wet, shell hunting, or fishing. There’s so much to enjoy at this beautiful park, so grab your beach bag and enjoy! 

Panama City happens to be one of the best places in Florida to see dolphins. There are multiple dolphin tours available to book here, offering your family the chance to get out on the water and see these delightful and playful sea creatures.

7. Everglades National Park 

Everglades National Park is an enormous park full of so much wildlife and wonder. It would be an amazing place to spend time together, exploring with your family in Florida in January. You can bike, hike, or take a waterway tour, the possibilities are endless in this Florida national park . 

The park offers three different convenient entrances, depending on where you are in the state: Homestead, Shark Valley (in Miami), and Gulf Coast (in Everglades City).

This park is one of the best places in Florida for viewing endangered species. You never know what you might see here, including the likes of Manatees, American crocodiles, and Florida panthers. Have fun exploring!

8. Key West 

Key West is beautiful, and it just so happens to be the warmest place in Florida in January as well. In short, you can’t lose with a stop here. If you’re chasing after the winter heat, this is definitely the place for you. The drive through the Keys is absolutely amazing. The water is the most amazing color of blue.

Smathers Beach is the perfect place to spend a lazy day on the beach in Key West. It’s the largest beach in this area, offering your family plenty of space to enjoy the beach however you’d like. 

If you want to make your time in Key West memorable, buckle up for an adventure to Dry Tortugas National Park. It’s one of the most unique national parks in Florida, requiring a 70-mile water journey on a ferry or with a tour to make your way to the secluded islands.

9. Seaside 

Seaside is an affluent resort community and one of the best places to visit the 30A beaches . It would make for a wonderful place to visit in Florida in January. We didn’t stay here but spent a good amount of time exploring this beautiful place and its beaches. This area is exceptionally beautiful. 

We were also very impressed by its urbanist design. All of the houses are soft pastel colored, with most being white. There are many access points to the beach throughout town, and we also loved the pavilions along the shoreline as well.

Be sure to check out Airstream Row, an Airstream food truck park, for some amazing food while you’re there! The snowcones alone make a visit worth it!

Where to Stay in Seaside 

There aren’t many hotels or resorts in Seaside. A vacation rental is your best option when traveling here, and VRBO has lots of rentals in the area.

Tampa is a buzzing metropolis, so if you’re looking for the fast-paced energy of the city with lots to do, see, and eat, this could be the best option for you. It is also just a short drive away from the beaches in Clearwater.

Busch Gardens and Zoo Tampa are your best bets for amusement-park-type fun with kids in this city. We have been to zoos all over the country, and Zoo Tampa is one of my absolute favorites. There are free rides for the kids, great animals, and an underwater exhibit for the manatees.

Tampa isn’t known for its beaches, especially due to bacteria in the water, but Ben T. Davis Beach makes for a fun place to have a picnic or play in the sand. Kids will certainly love exploring the Tampa Riverwalk; it’s such a fun area of town!

If you’re looking for a glamorous Floridian getaway in the middle of winter, then Naples might be for you. This city is very ritzy, known for its art galleries, fancy boutiques, and golf courses, but it’s not necessarily for everyone. 

Families will be able to find some serenity outside the glimmering city at Naples Pier or Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Celebration Park is a fun spot to enjoy the comfortable temperatures with a dinner outside from the local and varied food trucks.

12. St. Petersburg 

St. Petersburg is a charming Florida destination. It’s a good place to visit in January for families looking to enjoy the warm weather in a laid-back and relaxed fashion. St. Pete is not demanding or flashy, making it a great place to pause, reconnect with those you love, and take in some amazing scenery. 

St. Pete Pier is a fun place to explore the city and enjoy the sunshine. They even feature a fun Winter Beach set up for the holidays. It’s open until mid-January, where families can go ice skating while taking in views of the ocean. Be sure to check out some of the amazing St. Pete downtown restaurants afterward! 

We often see dolphins right off the shore near the park and the pier, so make sure to visit that area leading up to sunset!

It’s no secret that many people flock to Florida in January for the comforts of the beach in the dead of winter. Sanibel Island has six public beaches, so there’s plenty to choose from here. Relax and rejuvenate on the sand or take to the island’s 25 miles of bike paths for some active fun.

If those two aren’t enough for you, Orlando is also home to SeaWorld, Gatorland, and Legoland.

January is one of the best times to visit the area and experience the parks because the low season starts around the 7th of the month.

(The beginning of January is considered part of the ‘holiday season,’ so parks are busy as the kids are still out of school.)

Because Disney World and Universal Studios are the two most popular theme parks in the United States, a visit to either requires more than one day.

There’s so much to do (especially at Disney World), and most visitors plan at least two days per park.

If you’re looking for private, peaceful, and serene, Gold Coast beaches may not be ideal.

On every other front, however, the Gold Coast is number one.

Places like Miami Beach and South Beach have warm temperatures of 72°F (22.2°C), which isn’t so bad if you’re coming from somewhere with snow.

You can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the iconic Ocean Drive , including the must-see art deco buildings.

Whether or not you’re going for a swim, the Gold Coast won’t disappoint.

• Treasure Coast

The Treasure Coast boasts slightly warmer beaches than the Gold Coast, with average temperatures around 74°F (23.3°C).

The Gold Coast and the Treasure Coast are close in proximity, so don’t be surprised to see Palm Beach or even Boca Raton listed as part of either (the border between them is fluid).

The top beaches on Treasure Coast include West Palm, Pompano Beach, and Delray Beach.

It is one of the hottest cities in Florida with the highest temperature measured reaching a sweltering 105 ºF (that is 40.6 Celsius) on June 19, 1998; July 11, 1879, and July 28, 1872. More recently, May 27 2019, got up to 101 ºF, which is still darn hot in our opinion!

Being on the Atlantic ocean, Jacksonville has a preferable swimming season from April to November. Tourists generally choose to visit Jacksonville on either side of the hot summer for warm-weather activities; late March to late May and from early October to mid-November have pleasant temperatures.

Jacksonville Beach is one of the warmest beaches in the country. Even in the winter months, the average American would find the morning temperatures mild. Due to the year-round warmth, Jacksonville is a great place to hit the beach for water sports, play a round of golf, or head to the tennis courts almost any time of the year.

Gainesville

In 2020, records were broken in Miami Florida. The famous city saw two weeks with temperatures rising around 90°F, averaging around 88°F, breaking the previous heat record that dated back to 1895. Disney is located outside of Orlando in Lake Buena Vista. In the month of January, the weather will be cool but dry and the parks will not be very crowded.

Epcot International Art Festival is going on from January through February, with special events and merchandise featured inside the park. SeaWorld Orlando

Cultural Coast

The Roundtript staff is most partial to the Cultural Coast as it’s been the favorite summer destination for our families since before we were born. In January, the water and weather will be slightly cooler than you’d experience farther South since the Cultural Coast is closer to the center of the state on the Gulf side. The beaches are beautiful here, but the water will average 63°F (17.2°C).

Our best suggestions for visiting the Cultural Coast are Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Siesta Key and Sanibel Island. Anna Maria Island is the perfect beach town with a very relaxed atmosphere that encourages walking and biking around the island. Longboat Key on the other hand puts on more of the ritz. Siesta Key has recreational accommodations for the whole family and Sanibel has a great natural habitat in the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Preserve.

Paradise Coast

The Paradise Coast is opposite of the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area, featuring a more natural habitat and relaxing environment for winter visitors and older audiences. The area tends to be an idyllic setting for snowbirds, with lots of events and activities within a serene atmosphere. It’s also the closest coast to the Everglades, giving visitors a range of options and adventures for their Winter vacation.

The popular spots will be busy this time of year, but might not be hopping with people like you’d see in those previously mentioned. The waters are cool and clear, averaging 66.9°F (19.4°C). The top destinations on this coast are Marco Island, Naples, and Fort Myers. Marco Island is great for fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding, making it a fun beach trip for families and active seniors. While Naples and Fort Myers are most popular with older audiences.

Space Coast

The Space Coast is located slightly north of Orlando on the Atlantic side of the state. Known as the home of Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral and the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach, this area has been a popular Spring Break destination for decades. While the beaches don’t rock as much as they did in the early 2000’s, tourists still enjoy what the Space Coast has to offer.

January will be cooler on the Space Coast, with the water temperatures averaging 70°F (21.1°C) which is cold to Floridians, but vacationers may not mind. The best beaches on the Space Coast are Melbourne, Cocoa Beach and Daytona Beach. All have a very similar structure and atmosphere, so choosing your location may be based on their proximity to Orlando – in which case Cocoa will be your best option.

The Sun Coast is north of the Cultural Coast on the Gulf side of the state, with similar weather to the Cultural Coast with water temps at 63°F (17.2°C). The Sun Coast boasts Tampa Bay’s best beaches, including Dunedin, Clearwater and St. Pete Beach. While these beaches are heavily marketed and popular with tourists, the coasts mentioned above will have more pristine offerings and lodging.

Our best recommendations for this area are to visit Caladesi Island State Park or Honeymoon Island State Park. Both require ferry trips from the mainland in Dunedin. These well-preserved state parks have designated dog-friendly areas, picnic tables and walking paths to take in the natural island habitats. You’re guaranteed to see gopher tortoises, sea turtles and ocean birds with every visit to these islands.

First Coast

The First Coast is Florida’s coldest coast on the Atlantic side, featuring the historical cities and beaches of St. Augustine, Jacksonville and Sea Islands. The Winter months are a great time to dive in the Florida Keys with great visibility and fair temperatures in and out of the water. Outfitters dot the Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West, giving you plenty of options for a guided dive and rental equipment. Because the water temps are cooler, a wet suit is highly recommended for your trip.

The top dive sites you’ll find in the Keys are reefs filled with aquatic animals like sea turtles and reef sharks . Looe Key off of Big Pine Key is a great jumping off point for reef diving, along with Molasses Reef in Key Largo. You can also dive wrecks like the USS Spiegel Grove off Key Largo and the USNS Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, the preferred diving spot in Key West. There’s even a sunken “Christ of the Abyss” you can find in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the most sought-after diving experience in the Keys.

If you’re into spear fishing, the Keys is one of the world’s best locations for the sport. In January, you’ll be searching for some of the Keys finest catches, including Hogfish, Lionfish and Grouper. If you prefer fishing above the water, January is a great month to take a charter offshore in search of Sailfish. There are even a few Sailfish Tournaments held throughout the month.

Golfing is a popular pastime all across the state of Florida and there are many resorts and cities with great courses. Some of the best you’ll find in January are down in South Florida where the weather remains temperate through the Winter, though there are some excellent courses in Central and North Florida that are hard to pass up.
