Before Your Marella Cruise

Question – How do I book a Marella cruise?

Answer – Booking a cruise couldn’t be easier, you can book directly with Marella Cruises here .

Question – Is a Marella cruise expensive?

Answer – A Marella cruise represents excellent value for money. You get to visit multiple countries in one cruise, all your flights and transfers are included. A Marella cruise also comes with as standard an all inclusive drinks package, and all non speciality food. Food and drink will be covered later in this post. Question – Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

Answer – Yes you must have a passport with at least 6 months remaining before its expiry date.

Question – Do I need travel insurance?

Answer – It is essential that you have travel insurance that is cruise specific and make sure you get your travel insurance as soon as you book your cruise. The level of cover differs depending on what company you use but things like cancellation, illness and missed ports should be things you are looking for but the main reason for insurance is medical emergency which we will touch on later in this post.

Question – Will I need any visas for my cruise?

Answer – This depends on where your cruise starts and ends and of course where you visit in between. If you are not sure there is always lots of useful information on the Government website.

Question – Cruising – is it just for old people?

Answer – There is no doubt that some cruise lines do attract an older clientele but Marella definitely cater for all ages.

Question – Can I cruise with my children?

Answer – Marella cruises currently have 5 ships in their fleet, Marella Discovery , Marella Discovery 2 , Marella Explorer , Marella Explorer 2 and Marella Voyager , the only adult only ship is Marella Explorer 2. All the child friendly ships also have kids clubs.

Question – Will I get seasick?

Answer – Every one is different, but if you are susceptible to motion sickness choosing the right cabin is essential. Choose as close to the middle of the ship and as low a deck as possible as this is where you will feel the least amount of movement. There are also lots of sea sickness remedies including eating green apples or ginger, plus medications are also available, you can even get wrist bands that will definitely help. What to Pack for a Marella Cruise

Question – Is there a limit on how many suitcases I can take on my Marella cruise?

Answer – As Marella are Fly cruises you luggage limitation is dictated by the airline which is 20kg per person or 23kg if you book a premium seat on the plane.

Question – What sort of clothes do I need to pack?

Answer – The type of clothes depends on where in the world you are travelling and what time of year you are travelling. We will discuss cruise dress codes later in this post.

Question – Can I pack a hairdryer and curling tongs/straighteners?

Answer – Yes you can, all cabins come equipped with a hairdryer but you are welcome to bring your own, we will talk more about cabin facilities later in the post.

Question – Can I pack alcohol to drink onboard?

Answer – You are not permitted to take you own alcohol, if you do it will be confiscated and returned to you at the end of the cruise.

Question – Can I take my own iron?

Answer – Taking an iron is strictly prohibited, see next section for an alternative.

Question – How does my luggage get to the ship?

Answer – With the majority of Marella cruises, once you have checked in at the airport your luggage will be taken straight to your cruise cabin. However at a few ports you have to reclaim your luggage at the airport, take it to the transfer coach who will then take it to your cabin on arrival at the port. You will be given this information when you check in at the airport

Question – How will the porters know what cabin we are staying in?

Answer – You can either print off your luggage labels at home or Marella will provide them when you check in for your outbound flight, you just attach them to your suitcase.

What will be in my cabin on a Marella Cruise

Question – Do Marella provide towels?

Answer – Yes Marella not only provide bath, hand towels and washcloths but they also provide beach/pool towels too!

Question – You stated that taking an iron is prohibited, how do I iron my clothes?

Answer – Unfortunately there is no iron in your cabin but Marella do provide a laundry service, you can find out what that will cost here .

Question – Are the cabins all the same?

Answer – There are lots of cabin choices from inside cabins with no windows all the way up to plush suites, some even come with its own piano. Prices are based on the level of comfort, size and position on the ship. We have a number of Marella cabin tours available on our playlist here .

Question – Are the cabins really basic?

Answer – Regardless of the category of cabin you book they all come with an en suite bathroom, toiletries, towels, coffee and tea making facilities, a TV, air conditioning, a telephone, a safe, a hairdryer and a comfortable bed.

Question – What is a muster drill?

Answer – The muster drill is a health and safety presentation that you watch on the TV in the comfort of your own cabin.  It explains the safety measures that as a passenger you have to adhere to and what you need to do in the case of an emergency.  It will also show you how to put on a life jacket and how you will be alerted to an emergency by the use of the ships horn. On the inside of your cabin door is a map outlining where you will need to go (your muster station) in the case of an emergency. To complete the muster procedure you then go to your designated muster station where your key card will be scanned to show that you have completed the muster procedure.

Question – What is a Cruise key card?

Answer – A cruise key card looks like a credit card, it has your name on it and has multiple uses including opening your cabin door, any on ship purchases, and is scanned whenever you leave the ship so the cruise line knows who is on or off the ship at any given time.

Question – Can I do my own laundry?

Answer – As we said earlier there is no self service laundry but if you just want to rinse out some items to freshen them up there is a retractable washing line in the shower cubicle to allow you to hang clothes up to dry, make sure you pack some clothes pegs!

Question – Can I keep up with whats going on in the world while away cruising?

Answer – All cabin TV’s have live news channels as well as sports news channels. They also have films and series box sets on demand which are free to watch.

Food and Drink on a Marella Cruise

Question – Do I have to pay for food?

Answer – All the food in the main dining rooms and the buffet restaurants are included, other included food around the ships are Nonna’s, Abuela’s, the Snack Shack and the Glass House.

Question – So are there any restaurants you have to pay for?

Answer – As well as the included in your cruise fare dining there is also what’s called speciality dining, they are as follows, Kora La, Asian fusion, all ships,  Surf & Turf, Steak House all ships, Platter , and Silver Fork – Marella Voyager only, Sushi Bar on Marella Explorer , Marella Explorer 2 , Marella Discovery and Marella Discovery 2 , and room service. Question – Do I have to pay for drinks?

Answer – All Marella cruises are all inclusive as standard. You can find out what drinks are covered by visiting our Marella drinks prices and packages post .

Question – My favourite drink is not on the standard all inclusive what can I do?

Answer – You can either upgrade to the premium all inclusive drinks package which depending on the cruise can be as little as £10 per person per day or you can pay for the premium drinks individually. It’s easy to work out what will be best for you by checking out our Marella drinks post as mentioned above.

Question – Will I put on weight?

Answer – That really is entirely up to you. First time cruises tend to go a bit mad with all the food that is available onboard but the more you cruise the more you realise that eating nine meals a day is not really necessary.

Question – Will I get bored on a cruise?

Answer – Entertainment ranges from daily quizzes, game shows, live music, west end style shows, arts and crafts and so much more. Or you can just relax and enjoy the various swimming pools and hot tubs on board. You can read our full Marella Voyager entertainment guide here .

Question – Is all the entertainment on board free?

Answer – There are only three things entertainment wise that you have to pay for. One is the twice weekly shows in The Exchange which currently costs £14.95, but that does include 3 speciality cocktails that are only available at this venue and are not part of the drinks package. The second is the ever popular cruise favourite Bingo but of course this does come with a chance of winning some decent cash prizes. Last up is the casino which again does come with the chance of hitting the jackpot.

Question – What if I just want some quiet time?

Answer – There are numerous areas around all the 5 ships where you can sit, read a book, do some arts and crafts or just do nothing at all. It’s your cruise you can do pretty much whatever you want.

Question – Is smoking allowed in any of the entertainment areas?

Answer – Smoking is strictly prohibited in all the inside areas of the ship including your cabin. There is however, designated smoking areas in some of the outside spaces.

Port Days on a Marella Cruise

Question – Do I have to get off the ship on a port day?

Answer – What you do on a port day is entirely up to you. Sometimes it’s nice to stay on as the ship will be far quieter giving you the opportunity to explore any areas of the ship that might not have seen yet.

Question – If I do get off the ship in port can I do my own thing or do I have to book an excursion?

Answer – Again it’s your cruise and you are free to choose, however, if you are going to explore areas that are a distance from the ship make sure you are back in plenty of time for sail away.

Question – What if I am late back to ship?

Answer – The beauty of booking an excursion with the cruise line is that if you are delayed the ship will wait for you. However, if you are travelling independently and you return after the advertised sail away time the Captain is well within their rights to leave you behind, as a delayed departure could cost the cruise line thousands.

Question – How Formal is a Marella cruise?

Answer – Rest assured that Marella is one of, if not the most casual cruise line out there. There is a dress to impress night where you are encouraged to put on your glad rags but its certainly not a stuffy affair. We have a full run down on Marella’s dress code here .

Wellbeing on a Marella Cruise

Question – Can I keep fit on a Marella cruise?

Answer – Yes you can. All Marella ships have a well equipped gym, and swimming pools.  There is also a running/walking track on the outside decks plus fitness, yoga and meditation classes that are all included in your cruise fare.

Question – What if I become unwell on my cruise?

Answer – All Marella ships have a medical centre with doctors and nurses and can cope with most medical emergencies. However if you do need to be transferred to a hospital on land this will be arranged.

Can we talk about cruise luggage tags? If you’re going on a cruise, you might be wondering how you’ll get your luggage tags from the cruise line, what to do with them, and if you should buy cruise luggage tag holders.

In this post, I’ll be answering the frequently asked questions about cruise luggage tags, and also sharing the information you need to know about which cruise luggage tags holders are best.

Cruise Luggage Tags F.A.Q.’s

How will you get luggage tags for your cruise?

Once you complete your online check in on your cruise line’s website, you’ll be instructed to print out your cruise documents, which will include a boarding pass and luggage tags. The luggage tags will often be printed with your name, cruise ship, sailing date and cabin number.

If you’re in a guarantee cabin , your stateroom may not have been assigned, and the cabin number may be left blank. If this is the case, it’s just fine.

It’s a good idea to print out at least 2 luggage tags for each member of your family or travel party. A little extra cruise tip is to keep one “extra” with you and your cruise documents.

Can you order luggage tags through your cruise line?

In some cases, you can request adhesive printed luggage tags from your cruise line. This should be done after you receive a notification that your cruise documents or edocs are ready, however leave about 2 weeks before your cruise sailing date. This may not be available in every country, and may vary by cruise line.

You can check with your cruise line or travel agent for information specific to your booking.

Printing, folding and attaching cruise line luggage tags

It’s very simple to print your cruise ship luggage tags. I like to make several copies, so I have enough to label my cruise carry on bag, garment bag, as well as my regular size suitcases .

Instructions for how to fold the luggage tags will be on each paper (usually in 3). When folded, you can staple each luggage tag onto the handles of your luggage. Make sure to bring a mini stapler with you, especially if you go to a hotel a night before your cruise.

You may want to bring some scotch tape to reinforce the paper luggage tags as well.

Should You Purchase Cruise Luggage Tag Holders?

Cruise luggage tags aren’t a necessity for cruising, however they do make things much easier. By using the plastic luggage tag holders , you eliminate the need for stapling and using tape, and won’t worry that paper luggage tags may fall off.

Cruise luggage tag holders are durable and reusable, and truly may be one of the best purchases you ever make for cruising .

Something to note is that some cruise lines use longer luggage tags, while others use shorter tags. Make sure to check to see which luggage tag holders are right for your cruise line. I’ve listed them below in this post for your convenience.

What if you forget your luggage tags at home?

In a worst case scenario, if you forget your luggage tags at home , you can ask the porters at the cruise terminal on boarding day for assistance. They will usually be able to provide you generic tags before embarkation .

I guess you can, although you will need to use the actual cruise line tags for boarding. Personalized or novelty luggage tags are good additions. Glad you liked the article.

Is there one luggage tag holder that will fit all of the cruise line’s tags?

Not really, although it seems the shorter wider tags fit most. Longer tags are generally Royal Caribbean and Celebrity.

What’s the specific size dimensions for Carnival cruises please? I bought the 2.75 in x 4.125 in.

I don’t have the specific dimensions – you might find the answer in a Carnival facebook group or on cruise critic. If you bought the Carnival size on Amazon, that should be good (read the reviews if you aren’t sure).

Hi Ilana! Love your site! I’ve never used luggage tag holders before, but thought I’d try them for our Celebrity cruise this time. I ordered the ones specifically for Celebrity. When I print the tags in my edocs, they come out way smaller than the tag holders. Are they supposed to fit the exact width/height of the holders? I don’t seem to be able to print them out any larger.

Hi Louise, I wonder if it may a printer setting. I think the luggage tags usually print to a regular 8 x 11 paper size.It will likely be a bit smaller than the tag size. If you’re really not sure, perhaps it’s best to contact the cruise line.

A beginner’s guide to Marella Cruises

We have now cruised 13 times and 2 out of our last 3 cruises have been with Marella Cruises (formerly Thomson Cruises). We had previously discounted them due to the ships being older, smaller, and not having the glitz and glamour that we had been used to with RCL and Celebrity. However, it was due to our friends persistent recommendations that we took our first Marella cruise and we are so glad we did.

Marella Cruises have some fantastic itineraries to choose from, each varied and interesting and we loved the fact that our cruises had 6 – 7 ports in 7 days, in comparison with other cruise companies that were only offering 3-4 ports in 7 days at the same time.  Our Greece and Adriatic itineraries were superb. New itineraries have recently come out for Asia which is one of our favourite parts of the world to visit, so that is very exciting!

If we have the choice, we would now choose an adult only cruise and Marella Cruises do offer these. However, they also cater really well for families with their kids clubs which have won awards in the past.

We are British and as soon as we were on board we loved the familiar Britishness. We have cruised on different cruise lines but for us having familiar customs, the British sense of humour and the overall polite mentality, really works for us.

There are no huge theatres on board but the entertainment offered by Marella Cruises compares very well with other companies. The standard of singing and dancing was excellent and shows were varied. We never saw the same show twice, something other companies don’t do so well. The variety of duos and bands such as Top Men, have been the best we have seen and the old school British comedians have had us in hysterics. We liked the fact that the singers and dancers interacted and mingled with the passengers too.

One thing we noticed cruising with Marella Cruises, is that the officers were very visual around the ship. Not just at the organised events, but throughout the cruise. This was great to see and we had some very interesting conversations and insights into life on board.

We enjoyed Marella’s freedom style dining, sometimes just having a table for 2 and at other times joining other guests for an interesting dinner. Choosing your time to eat in the main dining room was also a great option. We were not tied to a time which we really liked.

The afternoon tea was exceptional and was offered free everyday, whereas some other cruise lines do charge extra for this.

We found the quality of the food excellent throughout, with a fantastic selection of British and international foods on offer. If you’re craving your British sausages, black pudding and good baked beans then you can have this. Our experience in the speciality restaurant Mistrals was superb, the meal we experienced was fine dining at its best.

Marella Cruises have one of the cheapest all inclusive cruise drinks packages out there. It is very reasonable. We paid £25 and it included a really good selection of drinks. An optional upgrade was available for £10 a day if you wanted bottled beers, particularly wines and top end spirits.

The entertainment team were very engaging and we had many fun afternoons by the pool. However, if you wanted peace and quiet there were always plenty of places where you can find this. This is also the first time we didn’t experience sunbed hogging. Passengers seemed to remove their towels when they were not using the beds which was so refreshing after experiencing selfish behaviour on other cruise lines.

The Dream and the Celebration have aft swimming pools and plenty of deck space to enjoy the views, we really liked this. They also have promenade decks which wrap around the ship, something unfortunately some of the newer ships do not have. This was our favourite place to sit, just the two of us, watching the sun go down over the ocean. This is definitely our favourite time of the day.

The comfort and service we received on board was very good. Our cabin service was spectacular on every occasion. As soon as we were in our cabin, our stateroom attendant introduced themselves and showed us around. We were on first name terms from then on and it really was a personalised service right from the start. We had towel animals in our cabin most days, which always made us smile.

Gratuities are always a contentious issue and Marella Cruises takes this stress away as tips and service charges are all included in your cruise price. We always tip on top to those that have given exceptional service, but that is a personal choice.

We are not lovers of formal nights but they do happen on Marella Cruises. However if you do not want to partake in the formalities, then there are plenty of other places to go.

We understand that there is now a Navigate App on some of the Marella Cruises ships which enables you to book speciality restaurants, treatments and excursions which also shows that, even though the Marella ships may be older, they are engaging with up to date technology and are moving with the times.

We have been trying to think about how Marella Cruises could be improved, but it is difficult to decide what to change without them becoming the same as other mainstream cruise companies, and ultimately losing their identity. If you love a balcony then the older ships that we have cruised on (the Dream and Celebration) do not have a large numbers of balcony cabins. If that is important to you, then you would need to book early. For first time cruisers Marella is a great choice as it is very relaxed and informal and the ships are not huge, so finding your way around is also not too difficult.

We know that we will be cruising with Marella Cruises in the future. Their new ships – the Discovery 1 and 2 – are old Royal Caribbean ships and we look forward to experiencing what they have to offer too.

In conclusion, if you are looking for the glitz or gimmicks that are found on the newer ships – or a more cosmopolitan European experience – then then you will be disappointed with Marella Cruises. But if you are after a great British cruise experience, then you will not be disappointed!

We are going on the explorer for the first time cruising if anyone can give us any advise we would be grateful

Anything really not having cruised before it is all new to us. We are going all inclusive as we do on all our holidays. It’s dress code really not sure what to take also trips organised by the ship are they more expensive than if we do them before we go

We had one formal night on our cruises. Some dressed in full Dickie bow and suites, some in just shirt the and trousers all acceptable for dinner. Simple dress or sparkly top and trousers for women is ok too, in fact if you don’t want to partake you don’t have too and just eat at the buffet. We tend to explore ourselves so not sure about the excursions, however we do know that if there is something you really want to do then book it as some excursions do sell out. Going on our first ever cruise and not sure what to pack and what to expect. We have the premium drinks package even though we aint big drinkers and neither of us what to get dressed up to the 9s . And we have looked at the speciality dining but have been told not to book it up has it does come on the normal menu ? . Also not sure if to book the excursions through TUI or try to do our own thing any advice

How do you attach cruise luggage tags?

No luggage tag holders? Here are a few creative tips for attaching your printed luggage tags without luggage tag holders:

• You can print them on cardstock paper instead of regular paper. This way, the tags are slightly sturdier when you fold them on the sides and staple them to your suitcase handle.
• Laminate the tags at home or at your nearby office supply store. Punch a hole at the top, then use a plastic zip tie to secure it to your luggage tag.
• Print them out, whether on cardstock or regular paper (I prefer cardstock), and cut them to size into a long strip. Then, use clear packaging tape on the front and back to make your own laminated tag at home. Once this is done, loop it around your luggage handle and staple it on the sides. This is how we did it many times before purchasing luggage tags.

Do you need cruise luggage tags?

A cruise luggage tag is necessary if you plan to drop off your luggage with the porter on embarkation day. The tag lets the cruise line know where to drop off the luggage once it’s on the ship and to your cabin.

What happens if you have to print the cruise luggage tags at home?

If you have to print your own cruise luggage tags at home, don’t worry, it’s easy! The cruise line will send you an email when your e-docs are ready. You will sign in to your account, look for your e-docs, and click where it says “print cruise luggage tags.” A PDF will download, and you can print the cruise luggage tags home.

Where should I attach my cruise luggage tag?

You should attach the cruise luggage tag to the top handle of your suitcase.

Do cruise luggage tags have to be printed in color?

We recommend printing it in color to make it easier for the porters and cruise line. Black and white printed cruise tags may make it more difficult for the cruise line to organize and deliver your luggage to your cabin.

What happens if you don’t own a printer?

If you don’t have a printer at home, you can try to print the cruise luggage tags at a local print shop or office supply store. You can also wait to get to the port to request them. can anyone tell me if Thomson allocate luggage tags before boarding at Manchester? Or at Malaga?

Unless things have changed, for malaga flights thomson reps will tag your case when you go to check in /drop bags at your departure airport.

The reason for this is although YOU COLLECT your bags at malaga and put them on the bus you dont see them after that till they reach your cabin.

Never seen any. I usually print my own.

That was the system last year and i see no reason why it would change now or in the future, its all down to the handling system at the port and thats not going to change.

When your flight arrives at Malaga, on arrival, as said, a Thomson rep will give you your cabin tag for your suitcase and after putting it on the coach you will next see it outside your cabin.

Then two nights before departure you will receive a coloured luggage tag relating to your departure flight This will have your cabin no and flight no on it You leave the luggage outside your cabin the night before departure at the specified time. You collect your luggage from the port when your coach is ready to take you to the airport and you put it on the bus and take it to check in at Malaga.

When your flight arrives at Malaga, on arrival, as said, a Thomson rep will give you your cabin tag for your suitcase and after putting it on the coach you will next see it outside your cabin. YES that is correct for Tenerife, different set up to Malaga in regards to baggage handling

I'm curious about different luggage tags. Anyone willing to share examples of their own? Does it look different depending on your room? Like a different one for Pinnacle Suite, Neptune Suites, standard rooms, club orange?  Just curious! 🙂

If you are close to your sailing, you can see the luggage tags in your HAL account on the website.

Our tags for a Neptune Suite were gold on last cruise and had “Priority “ on them.

Thanks! I was able to see my own but I wasn't sure how they differ compared to other rooms which is why I was wondering. 

We showed up without luggage tags, so our tags were just boring black and white that the porter writes the cabin number on.

We were inside so pretty sure we would have had the least interesting colour anyway  🙃

Haven't printed a bag tag since they quit sending them. Always just use the ones the porters have.

Years back the cruise lines would mail us a nice paskage including bag tags , now we have to print them out our selves .since we have a laser printer only black & white comes out  lol 

I print in black & white, so they're not real exciting. Other than they help get my stuff onto a ship - that's the exciting part.  🤭

I do print my tags in colour - different ships have different colours.  The PRIORITY for Club Orange or Neptune Suites has been in a bold yellow as I recall.

Luggage tags for my upcoming Noordam cruise do not say anything about priority for Club Orange 🤔 (but at least my boarding pass does 😉 )

I also laminate with clear packing tape and attach with cable ties or staples.

Oh sorry, that’s right.  I had my priority’s mixed up.  LOL.

Priority is on NS and above for luggage.  Different from priority for check in.  

I used to laminate too and finally bought the tags that hold them.  A lot less arts and crafts doing that 😉

For me it's part of the pre-cruise 'routine' and building excitement 😉

The first time I ever saw comments like this, I thought people were taping their luggage tags to the suitcase, and for those that would staple them, I thought the tag was being stapled to the suitcase!  HA HA!!  😁

On the World Cruise we pack toiletries in boxes and tape luggage tags to the boxes.
