In August, a UN report said that international tourism finally saw a strong rebound in the first five months of 2022, with almost 250 million international arrivals recorded - indicating a 46 per cent recovery in the tourism sector compared to the 2019 pre-pandemic levels.

The World Tourism Organisation - a United Nations body , overlooking international tourism - in its official note explained that along with working on the "2030 Agenda" to achieve the seventeen sustainable development goals, it's crucial to "rethink how tourism can reach small businesses". While the recovery rate is an important graph to track, "it's equally crucial to map that it is fair for everyone," it said.

The organisation emphasised the importance of inclusivity in this sector and said the focus should be on women and other marginalised groups that could benefit from the tourism industry, while ensuring the industry’s growth does not come at the expense of people or planet.

To build a resilient tourism industry , last week the government of India adopted ‘Dharamshala Declaration’ to affirm the country's position as “ global leader in the tourism sector by 2047 ” in a sustainable manner. India has not been untouched by the impact of the pandemic as the tourism industry suffered a big blow when the foreign tourist arrivals decreased to 2.74 million in 2020 as compared to 10.93 million in 2019, as per data.

Authentic India Tours

With the travel industry enjoying a welcome boom after two years of lockdowns and restrictions, it’s fantastic to celebrate World Tourism Day 2022 taking place on 27 th September.

This year’s theme adopted by United Nations’ World Tourism Organization (WTO) is ‘Rethinking Tourism’ to meet the challenges of sustainability and climate change. To celebrate World Tourism Day 2022, we take a look at the latest travel trends that will continue into 2023 and beyond.

12 Travel Trends for World Tourism Day 2022: “Rethinking Tourism”

According to ABTA in their Travel in 2022 report , in 2023 we will “…expect to see holidaymakers ‘catching up’ on the trips they’ve missed out on by upgrading elements of their next holiday or opting for a bucket list destination, as well as an increased reliance on the expertise of travel professionals and the security of package holidays, as they navigate changing travel requirements at home and overseas.”

Post-pandemic, travellers are appreciative of their ability to have the freedom to explore the world once again, but their needs and interests are evolving. This article looks at some of the emerging trends for World Tourism Day 2022 and how the tourism industry can meet those needs.

Bucket list destinations

After two years of staycations and a very cautious return to travelling abroad, travellers are now gaining the confidence to go further afield to places they’ve always wanted to visit. This is fuelled by these dream destinations being off limits for so long, and the financial savings from not going away resulting in a larger holiday budget. Travellers who have sadly lost loved ones may also be of the mindset that “life is too short”, and are booking long-haul exotic holidays earlier on in their life than they perhaps would have. It really feels as if it’s exactly the right time to be celebrating World Tourism Day 2022 when the world is once again opening up for exploration.

Kurumba Resort, Maldives

Holiday upgrades

Those who have already booked their holidays, especially those that have been deferred for a long period of time, may be looking for upgrades to make their trip extra special. This could be a more superior grade of room, or a more generous board basis. This is a great chance for tour operators to offer deluxe rooms or suites, or enhancements such as candlelight dining, champagne, or spa treatments. There may even be the opportunity to add a few days to an existing booking with a beach extension or a different destination altogether.

Kurumba Village Resort - Jacuzzi Suite

Social distancing is still a big thing

While World Tourism Day 2022 celebrates that many tourists are embracing the freedom of Covid restrictions being lifted, some travellers are being more cautious. That’s why outdoor and open areas are becoming popular, such as beaches, forests, national parks and wildlife reserves, where social distancing can be maintained more easily.

Marari Beach, Mararikulam, Kerala

Smaller, boutique accommodation

Travellers are wanting more from their holiday experience, and rather than opting for large hotels, are turning to smaller, boutique accommodation for a more unique and personal experience. Not only are they staying somewhere that’s a little different, but this option will also appeal to those who want to limit the number of people they are around.

India with Teenagers houseboat

Security in booking a package holiday

One thing that still troubles many prospective holidaymakers is having to cancel their trip due to testing positive for Covid 19. To avoid an extended hassle in trying to reclaim money from separate companies, package holidays are definitely seen as a safer choice as everything is in one place, including flights, accommodation, transfers, entrance fees, etc.

Working holidays

Workations are a growing trend for 2023, reflecting the shifting of workplace dynamics. While it may sound contradictory to be working when you’re on holiday, it’s a great way to take a longer break with the compromise of spending some of the time working, but in different surroundings. Many employers recognise that their employees can work remotely, whether that’s at home or somewhere more exotic. To achieve this, travellers are looking for accommodation with high-speed WiFi, and designated working space.

Woman with laptop on holiday

Eco tourism

One of the biggest travel trends for World Tourism Day 2022 is ecotourism. Travellers wanting to visit India often have a great interest in making environmentally-friendly choices, factoring in climate change and their carbon footprints as part of their planning processes. Luckily, India offers many options for greener travel, such as journeys by train and a wide choice of eco-friendly accommodation. Many states are making an enormous effort to focus on eco-tourism , and there is a wide range of greener accommodations to choose from, particularly from the pioneering CGH Earth hotel group.

Spice Village Private Garden Villa, Periyar, Kerala

Culture-focussed travel

Many travellers are shunning overly curated itineraries in favour of immersive experiences that show them more about local people, customs and traditions. In India, this includes homestays where you feel like part of the family and farm-to-plate experiences at resorts providing their own ingredients.

In Kerala, tourists can take part in the Village Life experience, trying their hand at traditional activities such as coconut frond weaving and fishing. In Gujarat , tourists can spend time learning about the fascinating traditions of the Kutch people, and in Rajasthan, they can learn about the Bishnoi tribes , ecologists responsible for the preservation of the endangered blackbuck. This is one of the key trends for World Tourism Day 2022.

A natural treat for travellers from Sikkim

Google News

Sikkim offers a stunning range of natural ecosystems and fauna within a tiny geographic region of about 7,096 square kilometres, with holy lakes, waterfalls, and hot water springs adorning the hilly landscape.

Sikkim is a wonderland blessed with natural abundance, ranging from icy cold deserts to flowering alpine meadows to lush green forests and emerald mountain lakes. It is located in the Eastern Himalayan region and has an area of 7,096 square kilometres and elevations ranging from 300m to 8,586m above sea level.

The tourism industry is of paramount importance in Sikkim, it is the backbone and tower of strength in Sikkim's economy.

The panoramas are limitless and enthralling from river valleys and lush woods to alpine meadows with a rainbow of flowers blossoming in monsoon; to ice barren high glaciers and freezing deserts.

Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar Lake, one of Sikkim's most gorgeous and clean lakes, is located near the Tibetan and Chinese borders in the north. The frozen alpine lake, located at 5,183 metres in the highlands, is one of the major sources of the river Teesta. The lake is named after the great guru Padmasambhava, who is said to have been through this area on his tour to Tibet.

Lachen and Lachung valley

Lachen, one of three towns in North Sikkim, is notable for its natural greenery and for being home to Tibetan nomadic tribes. Lachung is a lovely little village surrounded by apple orchards, pine forests, and waterfalls. Lachung, Lachen, Valley is a natural wonderland with snow-capped peaks, wide expanses of alpine lakes, green environs, and tranquil temples.

Nathula Pass (Indo -China border)

Nathula is a border crossing between India and China (La means Pass in Tibetan). The route runs through Tsongmo Lake and is 56 kilometres from Gangtok. For most portion of the year, the area is blanketed with snow. The route was originally utilized for commerce by merchants from India and Tibet. It was part of the famed Silk Route that stretched along the Zuluk - Memenchu - Jelepla route, linking the plains of Bengal with Tibet.

Tsomgo lake

Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake, is a glacier lake in the northeastern state of Sikkim, 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the capital Gangtok. The lake, which is located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), remains frozen during the winter season. The lake's surface changes colours with the seasons and is held in high regard by the indigenous Sikkimese people. Buddhist monks made predictions after seeing the shifting colours of the lake. After the winter season ends in the middle of May, the lake's perimeter blossoms with flower species such as rhododendrons (the state tree of Sikkim), primulas, blue and yellow poppies, irises, and so on.

Chardham Namchi

When we think of Char Dham, we typically think of the four holy sanctuaries in Uttarakhand on top of the Himalayas. Around 2 hours drive away from Sikkim’s capital, Gangtok, lies the marvellous temple compound of Char Dham locked away by spectacular mountains. Anyone's sins are said to be washed away at this location. It houses shrines to Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, Lord Jagannath, and Lord Shiva. The shrine complex is located on the mountainous road between Melli and Jorethang. The sprawling temple complex, also known as the Siddhesvara Dham, was dedicated in November 2011. A 108-foot statue of Lord Shiva is also housed in the magnificent structure.

Goechala Trek

Goechala, located at an elevation of almost 15,000 feet, provides a journey like no other. While it is one of the oldest hiking routes in the Himalayas, it is not as well known. Many hikers dream of reaching Goechala, which offers breathtaking vistas of the Kanchenjunga Range, the world's third-highest mountain range. You will be able to see not just Kanchenjunga but also numerous other Himalayan peaks. The Goechala Trek, which includes a number of summits along the way, is the ultimate adventure.

Dzongri Trek

Dzongri Trek is the Goechala Trek's minor trek option.  The Dzongri trek is the best option for hikers who wish to see much in a short amount of time. Trekkers on this magnificent journey get the opportunity to explore and see the hypnotic exquisiteness of stunning vistas while hiking. In reality, Dzongri and Dzongri La (view point) are the best places to see the beautiful mountains and towering peaks of the Sikkim Himalayas.

Kangchendzonga Nationa Park

Khangchendzonga National Park, also known as the Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve, is a national park and a biosphere reserve in the Indian state of Sikkim. It was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2016, becoming India's first "Mixed Heritage" site. It was included in the UNESCO Programme on Man and the Biosphere. The park is named after Kangchenjunga (variant spelling Khangchendzonga), the world's third-highest peak at 8,586 metres (28,169 feet). The park's overall size is 849.5 km2 (328.0 sq mi).

Pelling, a lovely town in Sikkim's West region, has overtaken Gangtok as the state's second most popular tourist attraction. The primary attraction of the site is the beautiful view of Khangchendzonga and the neighbouring peaks, which are located 10 kilometres from Geyzing and 130 kilometres from Gangtok.

Centuries-old monasteries

Sikkim's culture is inextricably related to Tibetan Buddhism, with over 250 monasteries. Sikkim is not complete without its monasteries. The majority of monasteries are affiliated with the Nyingmapa or Kargyupa sections.

Dzuluk, Zuluk, Jhuluk, or Jaluk is a tiny hamlet in East Sikkim, India, lying at a height of roughly 10,000 feet (3,000 m) on the steep terrain of the lower Himalayas (Pincode 737131). This is a relatively new and quirky resort in East Sikkim. It is rapidly becoming a new tourist attraction. The magnificent view of the eastern Himalayan mountain range, including Kanchenjunga, contributes to its tourism value.

The conversion of Delhi airport’s terminal T2 into an all-international terminal is delayed till April 2025, according to a Times of India report . The airport has three terminals of which T1 and T2 are fully domestic, while T3 handles domestic as well as international traffic. With T1 undergoing an expansion to double its capacity to 40 million passengers, the airport operators decided to convert T2 into an all-international terminal temporarily to better handle international traffic.

The initial plan was to begin the conversion of the terminal in July or August this year , after the expansion of domestic terminal T1 becomes operational in June. This would close T2 for a few months. However, the authorities have now decided to postpone the conversion work until after winter, as they want all terminals to be operational during the season. This is to avoid a repeat of winter last year when a key low-visibility runway was shut for repairs during the foggy season and led to delays.

Across the globe, there are countless remarkable sites and monuments, each showcasing the unique cultures of their respective countries. World Heritage Day serves as a reminder of the importance of these historical treasures and the need to protect them for future generations. It brings together individuals, organisations, societies, and governments to raise awareness about the significance of historical sites and promote their preservation.

World Heritage Day was first held in 1983 by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The date, April 18th, coincides with the establishment of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982. This highlights the global effort to preserve our heritage for future generations.

  • New data on the world's busiest airports in 2023 reveals the latest trends in global travel.
  • 8.5 billion passengers traveled by plane last year, almost marking a return to pre-pandemic levels.
  • Airports in Asia and the Middle East became busier, but the US has once again clinched the top spot.

International travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, according to the just-released list of the world's busiest airports in 2023.

8.5 billion passengers traveled globally by plane last year — up from 7 billion passengers in 2022 .

The rise in air travel marks a recovery to 93.8% of levels in 2019 before the world shut down, according to preliminary data published by the Airports Council International (ACI), a trade association that includes 2,600 airports worldwide.

Increasing travel to airports in Asia and the Middle East was one of the key trends to emerge from the data, with Dubai International Airport jumping from the fifth to the second busiest airport in the world.

Airports in India, Japan, and Turkey also made it into the top 10 and were some of the biggest movers in terms of annual gains in passenger numbers.

As the world's largest domestic market for flights , US airports still make up five of the busiest airports in the world, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retaining its No. 1 position.

Despite tough global economic conditions, there was "a growing inclination towards travel," Luis Felipe de Oliveira, the ACI's world director general, said in a press release.

"Airports continue to demonstrate their resilience and adaptability amidst the challenges posed by the ever-evolving landscape of global travel," said Oliveira.
