I am so incredibly grateful for the National Register Internship Travel Scholarship. As a first-generation and lower-income graduate student, I have had to navigate and overcome many financial obstacles throughout graduate school independently. This scholarship helps alleviate the financial barriers of relocation for clinical training so that students can focus on learning as much as possible during such an essential and formative year.

Those in search for meaningful opportunities to help those in need and learn along the way, you've come to the right place.

🧠 Why Volunteer for a Psychology Internship Abroad?

Mental health remains a pillar of the health care sector which doesn’t get the attention it needs. The social stigma of mental health issues has held people back from seeking help in the western world but it is hardly provided in developing countries. According to the WHO, "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." To give you an idea of the impact that mental conditions can have on our society, we have selected a few facts provided by the WHO :

  • Mental and substance abuse disorders are the leading cause of disability worldwide
  • About 800 000 people commit suicide every year
  • Rates of mental disorder tend to double after emergencies.
  • Mental disorders are important risk factors for other diseases, as well as unintentional and intentional injury
  • Stigma and discrimination against patients and families prevent people from seeking mental health care

Low-income countries have 0.05 psychiatrists and 0.42 nurses per 100 000 people. In addition, several developing countries are victims of natural disasters and other emergencies. Serious life events impact people’s lives and affect their mental health. A Tsunami, for example, has intense aftermath following the disaster with countless people unable to cope with the loss that they had to endure. This has led countries like Sri Lanka to have one of the highest suicide rates worldwide.

The increased use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs in developing countries is becoming a major issue. This is exacerbated by the fact that these countries also lack the funds to support mental health services.

That developing countries are understaffed when it comes to treating psychological disorders, is an understatement. It’s safe to say that most people simply don’t have access to any form of psychological help or support. Luckily, awareness on the topic is increasing and great efforts are being made to eliminate the stigma around psychological issues. There are many opportunities to help out in this field. Volunteer for a psychology internship abroad and work to offer mental health care to those who are less fortunate.

Career-related Reasons

Students who want to pursue a career in psychology will benefit greatly from a psychology internship abroad. Whether you are doing research at a university or you’re still studying, getting practical experience abroad will be an asset for your future. Pick a psychology volunteer program that fits your undergraduate and apply for an internship. Check with your university if it qualifies for study credits and you are set for a life-changing experience.

Psychology work experience abroad is an excellent way to build your resume and create future job opportunities. Those who are doing research at a university should also consider doing mental health internships abroad as it will broaden your perspective and inspire future opportunities.

🤸🏽‍♀️ What Will I Do as a Psychology Volunteer?

In most cases, psychology internship volunteers need to be psychology students at a college or university. You will be given responsibilities depending on your experience and how far along you are in your studies. For volunteers applying to work at a psychiatric clinic, you will shadow other professionals and observe how they go about their day.

Psychology student volunteers can also opt to help at daycare centers that are focused on children with special needs or elderly care. Help provide these groups with stimulating activities and the necessary support. The bottom line is that there are many opportunities to learn while supporting to the community.

These are a few of the tasks you can expect during your volunteer internship:

  • Taking patients' medical histories
  • Conducting physical and psychological assessment
  • Create treatment plans
  • Manage ongoing care
  • Individual counseling
  • Psychotherapy
  • Providing harm reduction psychotherapy
  • Administering performance, aptitude, intelligence or personality tests
  • Work in the outpatient department
  • Provide services in prisons
  • Elderly care
  • Care of children and young adults with special needs

The tasks during your psychology internship will vary according to the program you apply for and your responsibilities will grow if you decide to dedicate more of your time toward the program. Psych internships will offer great psychology work experience abroad to gain practical experience and know what it is like to work in the psychology department. For students seeking a career as a psychologist, this is a necessary step to find out whether a career in mental health is a good match for you.

🌍 Best Places to Volunteer for Psychology Internships

Mental health programs are growing but are unfortunately not very common yet. If you are looking forward to supporting mental health volunteering abroad, let’s take a look at where this adventure abroad will take you. Take advantage of a unique opportunity to hone your psychology skills, enhance your practical experience and put your academic learning into practice alongside professionals from diverse backgrounds. Psychology interns may be assigned to a range of placements, such as private practices, non-profits, social services, healthcare centers and more! Experience how real life therapy sessions are run and gain an understanding about treatment strategies for patients with different priorities and goals.

This is an in-country internship, with accommodation provided. You can explore remote Psychology & Social Work internships , if you are looking for an internship program that you can undertake from home.

As a psychology intern, you’ll shadow and assist practicing psychologists, seeing how they develop relationships with patients, implement different treatment strategies and approach a range of different psychological issues. Interns may also have scope to review case studies, research, and develop their understanding of relevant literature in the field.

Understand and expect that individual internship experiences vary, as the specific placement that you’re assigned will depend on review of your resume and your current level of studies and experience. Therefore, if you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.

Spanish language proficiency is not a requirement to join. However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered. Patient consultations will often be in Spanish, so interns should be prepared for the very natural and normal frustration of not always understanding what is being said around them. Should a language barrier arise during an observational occasion, your supervisor will be able to provide you with a debrief afterwards, concerning the relevant information. Come prepared and willing to surmount a language barrier (and ask for help when needed), as opposed to being intimidated by it.

This internship includes five complimentary Spanish language lessons, which must be scheduled within the first two weeks of the internship. These should be considered mandatory for anyone who is not already a fluent Spanish speaker. Any additional Spanish language lessons must be coordinated and paid for separately. We encourage all interns to take advantage of the opportunity to learn some Spanish skills during their program (or develop their existing vocabulary).

In all cases, interns should expect that the first week of your experience will focus on settling in and gaining some introductory knowledge, as you will not “hit the ground running”. Rather, you should start with learning about the placement to gain an understanding of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.

Career Benefits

Psychology interns learn from a qualified and experienced supervisor, and can be involved in:.

Treatment observation.

Case study analysis.

Arrival and Orientation

Internships in Barcelona begin on the first and third Monday of each month. Exceptions may be made to this when start dates are shifted to avoid public holiday disruptions or closed when the program has already reached capacity. Duration options are 4 ,6, 8 and 12 weeks only. (Please consider choosing an internship in Valencia if you’re looking for more flexibility with your start date and duration).

Airport pick up and accommodation is included in the Program Fee. Accommodation is covered from the Sunday night before Monday start dates - interns are required to arrive no later than the Sunday before their Monday start date, as orientations are held on the Monday.

The typical port of entry is the Aeroport de Barcelona-El Prat (BCN). If you are planning to spend time independently in Spain prior to the internship and will not require an airport pick up, we can discuss alternative arrival logistics.

Upon arrival, interns will be met, greeted, and transferred to their accommodation. The last night of the accommodation is the Friday night of the final week, leaving interns free to depart on Saturday. Extra nights of accommodation can be arranged in advance, if requested, and are subject to availability.

Orientation covers important details for your internship, including introductions, information about culture, customs, rules, expectations, safety, language lessons, cultural excursions, and more. Your specific internship placement orientation will follow the general orientation, as you’ll be shown how to travel to and from your internship and be introduced to the team you’ll be joining.

Your internship program fee includes five introductory online Spanish language lessons which are provided as a way of boosting confidence and assisting with social and cultural integration prior to arrival. Any additional Spanish language lessons must be coordinated and paid for separately.

Please note that all participants are advised not to book flights until they have first registered to confirm their internship placement.

Accommodation and WiFi

Interns in Barcelona are accommodated in clean and comfortable, fully furnished apartments or selected hotel / hostel rooms. Final accommodation bookings are always dependent on availability. Bedding and furnishings are provided, as well as common areas such as lounge, kitchen and laundry facilities. Standard amenities include whiteware (i.e. washing machine, stovetop, fridge, microwave) and clean linen (i.e. bed sheets, pillows, towels). Accommodation includes internet / WiFi access.

In most cases, between four to six guests can be accommodated per apartment, or selected hotel / hostel room, so participants should be prepared to share living arrangements. Please note that shared apartments may be mixed-gender. However, every guest has a private room within the accommodation, with either a single or double bed.

Upon the confirmation of specific internship details, accommodation arrangements are made, taking into consideration the location of internship placements, to ensure that any commute time is as convenient as possible.

Internships in Barcelona do not include meals, as kitchen facilities are provided within all of the accommodations and supermarkets are easily accessible.

In Barcelona, breakfast is usually a light meal, consisting of coffee and a pastry. You can find offers for this around the city for less than €5. Prepare to pay twice as much, or more, if you want more of an international “brunch” style of breakfast instead. After a light breakfast, it’s common to have a midday snack and you can get fresh fruits from the markets for this.

There are many excellent restaurants to choose from in Barcelona and they typically offer special lunch menus in the afternoon, the “menú del día”, which ranges from €10–€15 (this is what the locals will eat). The menú del día normally includes two to three courses, bread, a drink and some water. Lunch is the main meal of the day in Spain, so you might opt for a lighter dinner in the evening.

If you’re eating out for dinner, expect that it will be late. Simple tapas can cost about €4 - €6 each (depending on where you are choosing to dine).

A budget of approx. €35 or €40 per person, per day, (approx. US$40) is probably sufficient for buying every meal and enjoying great food. However, depending on your own spending habits and lifestyle choices, personal budgets can vary enormously. If you eat out at restaurants and buy beverages frequently, this will cost a lot more than just purchasing food from supermarkets and preparing your own meals within the accommodation’s kitchen facilities.

Spanish lessons

Fluency in Spanish is not a requirement for interns in Valencia, however basic Spanish skills are strongly recommended. Your program fees include five introductory Spanish language lessons which are provided in order to boost confidence and assist with social and cultural integration. However, any additional Spanish language lessons must be coordinated and paid for separately.

We encourage all interns to take advantage of the opportunity to learn some Spanish skills during their program (or develop their existing vocabulary) to maximize the impact of the internship experience. The language lessons are tailored to each interns current level of Spanish, run from Monday to Friday and can be accommodated around your internship schedule. Classes are run in small groups by certified native speaking Spanish teachers.

Weekends and travel

During the internship schedule, interns have weekends available for free time. It’s almost impossible not to fall in love with a city like Barcelona. With its unique architecture inspired by world renowned artist Antonio Gaudi, vibrant culture, colorful art scene, delicious food and excellent football, interns will be spoilt for choice as to how best to spend their weekends and free time.

Discover the hidden alleyways of the Gothic Quarter, marvel at the Sagrada Família, sit and enjoy live music, savor the flavors on offer at the Boqueria Market or hire a boat and discover the wonders of the Mediterranean coastline. There are endless things to see and do!

  • Sagrada Familia: The life’s work of Catalonia’s most famous architect, Antoni Gaud, you’ll be awestruck by the contrasting façades, sculpted details and stained glass.
  • Picasso Museum: Enjoy over 4,000 works by the famous artist himself.

  • La Boqueria Market: Enjoy fresh produce, local dishes, delicious smells and the taste of Spain in Barcelona’s best known market.

Essential country information

Weather and climate:.

Spain has a very varied climate, according to the geographical situation of different regions. Most of the country is considered to be within a Mediterranean zone, which is characterized by warm/hot and dry summers. However, areas with relatively high rainfall are considered to be oceanic climatic regions, rather than Mediterranean. The northern quarter of Spain, which is within the Atlantic region, falls within this oceanic climate category, where winter and summer temperatures are influenced by the ocean. The southeastern quarter of Spain has a semi-arid climate, where the dry season can extend beyond the typical summer season.

In Barcelona, it is dry year round. The summers are warm, muggy, and mostly clear. The hot summer season runs from June through September, with an average daily high temperature above 91°F (33°C). The winter months, from November through March, are cold, windy, and partly cloudy. During this time, the average daily high temperature is below 58°F (15°C).

Earning a psychology degree is a springboard that can lead to various career paths and practitioners who continue on with specialty training often chart their own course — such as working in one of the many psychology specialties while seeing more of the world.

If that option excites you, consider becoming a travel psychologist. Opportunities are available now if you have the required education, training, and experience.

If you have high hopes of becoming a traveling psychologist or are simply curious about the role, you have come to the right place. We will cover the role's responsibilities, requirements, salary potential, and a few job roles you might find interesting — everything you need to know to get started in this highly rewarding allied healthcare career.

What Does a Traveling Psychologist Do?

When working as a traveling psychologist, your responsibilities involve a wide range of counseling and psychology duties. That might sound vague, but there are many roles you can fill, and each one requires you to perform duties commensurate with the assignment and facility to which you are assigned. You might find a traveling psychologist job in healthcare, education, or athletics, just to name a few. Some roles may have you working one-on-one with patients, while others may require you to lead group sessions.

How Much Can You Earn as a Traveling Psychologist?

One size doesn't fit all when it comes to travel psychologist positions. A traveling counselor may start at $40,000 annually, while a more experienced psychologist may earn $200,000 annually. As with most employment positions, your salary as a traveling psychologist will depend on your education and experience. The environment you work in can also play a part. A non-profit organization may pay you less than a hospital, for instance.

What Schooling is Required to Become a Traveling Psychologist?

A bachelor’s degree covering psychology basics is the minimum qualification for most traveling psychologists' jobs — though many require a master's or doctoral degree. How much higher education you need depends on the state and line of work you want to do. Getting a master’s degree in psychology will give you the broadest glimpse into the field of traveling psychology. Your electives can then focus on the field you wish to enter. For instance, you may choose electives focusing on mental health issues, research, or specific age groups.

Earning a doctoral degree, such as a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), will put you in the highest tier possible. The type of doctoral degree you earn will depend on your career goals. If you want to practice as a traveling psychologist, aim for PsyD, while a PhD is better suited for research roles.

What Other Requirements Are Needed?

In addition to the degree requirements, many programs prefer that you earn real-world training via an internship. The internship will prepare you for the workforce by giving you experience working directly with patients once you finish your degree. Another benefit of an internship is that you get to try a variety of roles before selecting the one that seems best-suited for you. Keep in mind that internships in counseling or clinical psychology often need to be approved by the American Psychological Association (APA), which is required for most mental health jobs.

Internships are also a good way to explore your area of expertise. You may want to become a child psychologist, a school psychologist, a neuropsychologist, or pursue another specialist area. While it is possible to build a successful career as a general psychologist, having a specialized area of expertise will make you a valuable asset primed to earn more money in the long run.

A List of Traveling Psychologist Careers

There is high demand for psychology careers at institutions worldwide.

School Psychologist

The need for school psychologists are on the rise, as drug abuse, child bullying, and other mental healthcare problems are top concerns. This is one of the most lucrative travel psychology jobs. As a school psychologist, you might work with administrators and teachers to develop an optimal learning environment for students. You could also focus on students with developmental differences, behavioral problems, and learning roadblocks that could cause academic difficulties. Or you could help other students cope with and work through learning challenges, allowing the student body to realize its true potential. You might work with students one-on-one or in groups. You might also work with parents to deal with challenges affecting students at home.

Environmental Psychologist

Traveling psychologists in this role study the impact of an individual’s environment on their behavior and emotions. Alternatively, some traveling psychologists study how people’s behavior and attitudes impact their environment. Many jobs have you assigned to urban planning projects where you will team up with experts in education, engineering, and horticulture to improve a variety of settings. For instance, you may be charged with studying a community center to determine how the environment can be altered to promote greater socialization and learning.

Forensic Psychologist

As a travel forensic psychologist, you may work closely with those who are incarcerated — diagnosing and evaluating one's mental capacity to stand trial; determining how likely an individual is to reoffend; or traveling to prisons around the country to treat inmates who are suffering from addiction and mental health issues. In some cases, forensic psychologists also assess and treat trauma victims as they prepare to testify in a court of law.

Sports Psychologist

Sports psychologists are among the most popular travel psychologist jobs currently available. Your responsibilities might include helping team members realize their full potential by working with them on various coping methods, communication styles, and thought patterns. There are even opportunities to work with Olympic athletes who are striving for optimal performance in a high-pressure environment, allowing the athlete to minimize stress and maximize their competitiveness.

Where Will You Travel as a Psychology Professional?

Now that we have covered the level of education you need, an internship, and a few areas of expertise, it’s time to consider where you want to work. Traversing the country — or the world  — while doing what you love is what becoming a traveling psychologist is all about.

Consider a few different areas where you might want to live. If you’re unsure of where to begin, that’s okay. You can start considering locations when it comes time to look for a job — and you might find places you’ve never considered before. You may find a job in sunny Florida or Hawaii or colder areas like Alaska. Each has its pros and cons. There are plenty of terrific places for traveling psychologists to work, so there are always new opportunities right around the corner.

Internships Abroad

Find your career abroad.

A group of students walking outside the Vatican.

Introduction

Interning abroad is your chance to do something different, learn outside of the classroom, gain work experience, earn academic credit, make lifelong friendships, and explore the world. AIFS Abroad Internships are powered by Global Experiences, the award-winning internship program with over 20 years of excellence in global career programming. Choose from more than 15 exciting international cities and internships in over 40 career fields. You’ll build your resume while having the experience of a lifetime!

How it Works

Submit your application and start working with your Admissions Counselor. We will have an interview to learn about your career goals, educational background, and location preferences to ensure that you are a good candidate to intern abroad.

Once your interview and application are complete, you’ll be cleared to apply. Your Admissions Counselor and our Placement Team will determine if we’re able to match you with a great host employer in your chosen destination. If accepted, this means we can guarantee you an internship within your career field.

After acceptance, the next step is to simply enroll into the program with your initial deposit to secure your spot. Enrolling means you have officially decided to join the program and take on the challenge and thrill of living and becoming an intern abroad in a new city!

Before you arrive in your host city, you will work one-on-one with your Program Advisor. They work with you on professional development, career advising and make sure you are ready to move and intern in your new home.

We will start the match-making process and narrow down employers to a select few that you would be a great fit for. You’ll have a Skype or phone interview before you leave, so they can get to know you, and you can get to know them. If everything goes well, then your internship is confirmed! You’ll know where you’ll be interning and the role you’ll be walking into before you hop on the plane.

When you’ve arrived in your city, you will meet the Location Coordinator and the other interns at your housing. Your internship will start soon after you’ve arrived and there will be social events and excursions throughout the course of your program. We strive to give you the independence you want with all the support and resources you need to be successful during your travel and internship.

Getting started is simple! In just a few steps, you’ll be on your way to building your resume and gaining critical hands-on experience.

Note: The vast majority of our internship placements are unpaid.

Top 10 Internships for Psychology Majors

Considering studying psychology? Check out these 10 possible internships for your major!

Happen to find yourself analyzing the folks around you–maybe wanting to understand more about your family, friends, role models, or even your own pets? If you’re considering a role in the field of psychology, then you’re definitely not alone in your interests. According to the National Center for Education Statistics , majoring in psychology is among the top five choices for undergraduates.

You might be attracted to the versatility and customization this path offers, or simply want to satisfy your curiosity. No matter your motivation, majoring in psychology can equip you with skills for your future career, opening the doors to research, counseling, lab management, and many more careers.

Psychology Skills

Psychology, defined as the study of the mind and behavior, pertains to humans and all of their intricacies. To intern in roles related to psychology, it’s important to consider which skills might help you succeed.

One such skill is communication. When interning in this field—especially in research-heavy roles—you will need to relay your findings through effective communication and reporting. You'll also need to stay cool under pressure when dealing with situations outside of your comfort zone. To get the most out of your role, it's key to have a genuine desire to learn about other people, an even temper, and an unbiased opinion.

It’s also important to be open-minded. Not only does this quality aid your own personal relationships, but it also widens your perspective and allows for better critical thinking. If you’re working with people from different backgrounds or other age groups, having a holistic view of human connection is extremely beneficial.

Up ahead, explore some psychology internships that you might be interested in pursuing in the future.

1. Community Clinic Intern

For those who might not know what they want to do in the world of psychology, interning at your local community clinic is a great first step! With the varying needs that you'll see at the clinic each day, there's a chance that you could find a niche you're passionate about while working there. You'll be able to serve your community directly and gain work experience at the same time.

2. Research Assistant

Research assistantships are probably the most sought-after positions for psychology students due to their wide range of concentrations. Because of how many different types of “research” take place in the field of psychology, options for this type of internship span over many specialties, and typically involve assisting a professor or scientist in their work. As as assistant, you'll have the opportunity to learn trade tricks, gain industry knowledge, and network with others in your field.

3. Social Work Intern

As a social work intern, one of your main concerns will be supporting the needs of children and families. As an intern, you'll be working under an industry professional who might task you with researching reports, thinking critically about client needs, and posing solutions to real problems in the work place.

4. School Psychologist Intern

School psychologist internships are great for those who feel called to help counsel students and assess their needs. In a role like this, you'll work both with children and adults on strategies to help care for students. To succeed in this work, you'll need a great deal of patience and a deep commitment to learning.

5. Correctional Facility Psychology Intern

If you're looking to get out of the lab and widen your world perspective, consider applying to a correctional facility psychology internship. In this role, you'll work with people you might never have gotten a chance to meet in a more clinical setting. As an intern, you'll collaborate with your program's staff to brainstorm and implement new program curriculums and policies.

6. Clinical Research Intern

Like a research assistant internship, this role involves directly assisting research in a given field; however, in this internship you'll be working in an environment aimed more at analyzing medical solutions. This role typically includes recruiting research participants and organizing data, along with helping develop solutions to problems based on the research findings.

7. Child Developmental Intern

Interning in a developmental setting puts a huge emphasis on researching, testing, and attending meetings to further the knowledge of cognitive development. A keen and observant eye are key in this role, and you should be comfortable working around both babies and senior-level researchers.

8. Forensic Science Intern

If you're interested in the field of forensics and crime research, this type of position could be a great career kickoff. Forensic science interns are typically tasked with both administrative and hands-on projects, including both writing and research.

9. Psychology Teaching Assistant

Feeling called to pursue a career in higher education? Applying to be a TA for a professor in your desired field is a great way to start down your teaching path during your undergrad studies. You'll get hands-on experience leading classes, grading assignments, and holding office hours with students where you can counsel them and their needs.

10. Sports Psychology Intern

In a sports psychology internship, it's a given that a general understanding of athletics/sports performance is highly valued. In this role, you'll conduct plenty of research on sports and athletes, and might even have the opportunity to propose experiments and present your findings.

Sometimes when organizations or companies that can’t afford to actually pay interns with money, they will instead offer some other type of living stipend or provide and/or cover the cost of living and food expenses while abroad.
