how to ship your dog

Has your pooch packed his bags? Whether you’re heading on a pet-friendly vacation , relocating your pooch, or anything in between, you’ll occasionally need to move your pet from one place to another.

There are a few different ways to get Fido from point A to point B, but pet transportation services are often the easiest option . They also tend to provide cushier canine accommodations than some other approaches, making it a win-win proposition.

But you don’t want to trust your beloved pet to just anyone, so you’ll want to make your choice carefully. Below, we’ll compare some of the best pet transport services so that you can find the perfect fit for your furry friend.

Best Pet Transport Services: Quick Picks

  • #1 Airpets America [Best Overall Pet Transport Service]: A 30-year-old domestic and international pet transport service that offers several travel upgrade options, such as grooming and exercise breaks.
  • #2 Air Animals [Best Door-to-Door Pet Transport Service] : A veterinarian-owned owned pet transport service that offers door-to-door shipping options for your convenience.
  • #3 Happy Tails Travel [Most Affordable Pet Transport Service] : A high-quality pet transport service that offers very affordable travel rates, as well as discounts for owners shipping multiple pets.

How Do Pet Transport Services Work?

Pet transport services work by escorting your pet from one location to another , typically via ground or air.

best pet transport service

Most commonly, they’re used as an alternative to transporting your pet via one of the major pet-friendly airlines .

Many owners opt to use pet transport services because they tend to provide the kind of specialized care dogs need and deserve .

Pet transportation is, after all, their primary focus.

Additionally, it’s important to note that some pets do not react well to air travel. Bu t many pet transport services give you the chance to keep your canine comfortably on the ground — even if the rest of the family is flying.

Ground travel isn’t always an option (it depends on your drop-off location and destination), but pet transportation services can help your canine feel as comfortable as possible if a trip through the air is necessary and can mitigate some of the common dangers and risks associated with flying your dog as cargo through a standard airline.

These services are oftentimes more expensive than traditional airline-curated pet trave l since they offer a more personalized service for your pooch. But many owners find the extra expense well worth the peace of mind they provide.

Benefits of Using a Pet Transport Service

Every pet transportation service functions a bit differently, but some core benefits of using these types of services include:

  • Personalized Attention . Pet transport services are focused primarily on the safety and comfort of your pet, which can be hugely comforting for owners. Plus, many offer a variety of extra features like GPS tracking and door-to-door transport so that you only have to worry about your own trip, not your pet’s.
  • Experienced Pet Handlers. These services often hire experienced pet handlers to move and work with your dog, which can offer some additional peace of mind. At the very least, staff that work at pet transport services will be more familiar at handling your dog than the average airport baggage claim attendant.
  • Roomier Cargo Conditions . Many transport services that offer to fly your pet will do so in more comfortable, temperature-controlled, roomier conditions where your dog won’t be toe-to-toe with a stranger’s luggage bag. Somer services can even fly your pet without any other animals on board, which may be preferable for reactive dogs.
  • Careful Monitoring . Most risks associated with flying pets involve layovers and delays where a pet is accidentally left out in the heat or cold due to improper management. A pet relocation service has your pet as their number one priority, ensuring your pet doesn’t get left out in the heat or is misplaced.
  • Paperwork Assistance . Depending on where you’re relocating to, there can be a lot of paperwork to fill out when it comes to moving pets, from health certificates and import permits to air waybills. Many pet transport services will help you get your documents together and ensure all your ducks are in a row.

For example, you may need an airline-approved travel carrier if your pet is flying, or you may need to provide a crate appropriate for use in a car , if your pet will be traveling in an automobile.

Also, while we’re on the subject of pet travel, be sure to pick up a carrier designed to accommodate canines in-cabin if you intend to fly alongside your pet.

Is It Safe to Ship Your Pet with a Transport Service?

are pet transport services safe

Accidents can always occur, but as long as your pet is healthy and you select a professional, experienced service that employs all of the relevant health and safety practices, your pet will likely complete the journey in problem-free fashion. Many pets travel this way every year!

However, some pets will be at greater risk than others .

For example, brachycephalic breeds often have a more challenging time while flying, as will dogs with some existing health problems.

Dogs suffering from separation anxiety or other emotional issues may also have a tougher time while traveling. Before signing up your dog for ground transportation, make sure to work on easing your dog’s car anxiety and desensitize your pup to spending long periods of time in the car so that they don’t panic on the road!

With these factors in mind, try to select a pet transport services that provides the level of care your pet needs to stay healthy and happy while traveling.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship Your Pet?

The cost of shipping your pet depends greatly on your destination, your pet’s individual needs, and size. But generally speaking, you can expect to pay an average of $500 to $2000 per pet for an established pet transportation service.

Keep in mind that this usually includes the transportation of your pet in a climate controlled environment, care for your pet while you’re apart, and many times, consultation regarding the pet regulations of your final destination.

Many pet transportation services offer discounts for military relocation, so be sure to inquire about special rates if you’re a service member.

Can You Ship Your Pet Internationally?

Yes . In fact, many pet transportation companies specialize in international shipments.

However, while international travel is an option, it is almost always more expensive and complicated than domestic travel . Depending on the destination, your pooch may also need to quarantine with the pet carrier company for a significant length of time before being reunited with you in your new country.

Moreover, each country also has its own vaccination requirements, which need to be discussed with your transportation provider. Luckily, pet transportation companies are typically well-versed in this process and can provide you with a more efficient, less confusing experience than handling the details on your own.

Shipping your pooch from one place to another can certainly be stressful. Luckily, pet transportation services mitigate much of the hassle so that your canine companion arrives safe and sound.

Has your furry friend used a pet transport service? Does he like to travel? We’d love to hear all about it in the comments below!

amazing volunteering experience in zimbabwe

I volunteered at the Wildlife Orphan Rescue Project at Free To Be Wild in Zimbabwe. The two weeks I spent working there were simply amazing. The people who worked with us were very nice and welcoming. The accommodation was absolutely clean and warmly furnished. It was cleaned every day and we received a wonderful meal three times a day ( vegetarian food was no problem). The work with the wild animals was just incredible, we were able to feed them, take care of them, go for walks with them, etc... Everyone was willing to help us at work when we had any difficulties and enjoyed teaching us new things. We had the opportunity to go on excursions or into town at any time and I felt safe at all times. I can highly recommend this project at Free To Be Wild and Worldwide Vets. Everything went well from start to the end of the journey and it was simply a breathtaking experience at Free To Be Wild. Thanks to the whole team.

Thailand Spay & Neuter

Honestly, three weeks in Thailand was not enough. I was able to perform surgery under the guidance of one of the coolest vets I've ever met. While on my trip, another recently qualified vet was topping up her surgery skills and I was able to learn new techniques from her as well! This is a great trip if you're looking for hands on experience and the opportunity to network with vet and pre-vet students or other people that have a passion for animals. I wish I had more time there and am more than ready to go back to Thailand!

Help to the horses, dogs and cats in Ukraine during the war

I've known Gemma Campling for over a year. I watch how fearlessly she works, rescuing and helping animals who suffered from the terrible war in Ukraine. Gemma has put together an amazing team, she is a wonderful doctor and an excellent organizer. Not only the horses, dogs and cats of Ukraine, but also people of Ukraine were lucky to have Worldwide Vets in Ukraine. Worldwide Vets is an example of real help of the World to Ukraine. It helps us to believe in victory and survive in difficult times.

Zanzibar vet clinic

Dr. Charles is the heart and soul of this project and he is awesome. He always look out for everyone and makes sure everyone is happy. I think the project is perfect for everyone who is in last years of vet school or just finished as most of the time you will learn basic care of animals, like cleaning wounds, vaccinate, deworm injections etc. or how to stich up an animal's wound. Also you will get teached how to castrate male and female cats and dogs alone, which is great. So for beginners and non-experienced vet students/ finished vets its perfect I would say. The accommodation is simple but fine.

Safari stables - Zimbabwe

I went on the safari stables for a month and I had such a good experience coordinating with Sarah! The zoom meeting was so enlightening so I highly recommend asking questions and not being afraid to go on the trips! The experience in itself was once in a lifetime and i could not recommend it more! Where else can you see giraffes, elephants, zebras or wildebeest from horseback?! There are always jobs to do however there is also lots of relaxation time which you can spend in the cafe with a milkshake or by the pool topping up your tan! Either way i will definitely be going back!

Equine Egypt Aid

This project offers a great opportunity for vets/students interested in equine medicine as the cases you'd see aren't the typical cases you'd see in the horse industry. you'll learn so much and you'll gain skills that'll help you especially on field work.

Amazing Peru Wildlife Internship

Just returned from the Peru Wildlife Internship and I cannot say enough amazing things about my 4 weeks there! The vets and all animal care staff are invested in teaching all the students. You never know what each day will bring and what animals you will get to work with! I cannot wait to return to RAREC someday.

Our adventure in Laos

First of all I'd like to thank Bailey for all her help before our stay in Laos. While in Laos, the other vets and nurses were amazing with us, same as the rest of the team. We learnt a lot of wild animal medicine, Lao culture and even we were able to travel a bit through the country. Worst part by far was knowing about the backstory of most of the animals there, really sad, that only made me realize about how important wildlife conservation is, and even more important is the colaboration with local people.

Safari Vet Internship

The 10 day Safari Vet Internship course was the best experience of my life! I enjoyed every minute of it. Fabiola was amazing and helped so much throughout the course. Dr Peter and Brendan, the two vets, who allowed us to accompany them on their job gave me so much knowledge and so much opportunity to work on the wildlife animals. This trip really motivated me to work hard in my studies as i am a vet student and I will definitely be going back next year:)

Thailand vet clinic

I had the opportunity to visit and work at the Thailand vet clinic (Rescue P.A.W.S.) as a veterinary student in my last year. It was the perfect experience to get to know how the job is done in a different country with different resource, to learn more about stray animals behavior and still I was able to get to know the culture and country. The whole team was lovely and very welcoming! Hope I can come back one day again :)

Safari Vet Internship - South Africa One of the best things I have ever done, would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in wildlife and conservation. I learned so much about what the vets do in their day to day life and how we can get involved in conservation no matter where we live. It was an experience of a lifetime getting to work with such amazing animals and something i will never forget.

Costa Rica Wildlife Internship

I have just returned from the Wildlife Internship in Costa Rica. I had the best 2 weeks ever! Everyone was incredible welcoming and supportive. The team's passion for animals was obvious and made the work even more meaningful. The internship was incredibly hands on and greatly helped me improve on my practical skills which is invaluable as a vet student. The Worldwide Vets team were incredible helpful prior to departure and ensure that you have everything you need to travel.

i went to the costa rica wildlife…

i went to the costa rica wildlife internship and it was the most amazing experience. i have learnt so much, and have participated in things that i never thought i would at a younger age. such as, vaccinating a jaguar, drawing blood from a spider monkey. not only that but i have been able to work with microscopes. the vet there is so nice and lovely, she made me feel like i could ask any question without feeling judged or dumb. the people, staff and volenteers, are so nice. i appreciate them all so much.

I’m equine veterinarian from Lviv…

I’m equine veterinarian from Lviv (Ukraine). When the war started, Worldwide Vets contacted me and asked how could they help. The amount of help we (Ukrainian vets) received from WWV during this hard times is unbelievable. Everything we needed and even more, from medicine to equipment. Huge Thank You personally to Gemma Campling from WWV! She’s a real professional in her field but also she’s just a great person)

USA Registered Vet Nurse/Technologist

Internship Type: Safari Vet (Wild Spirit) I had a fantastic time! Dr. Fabiola is an incredible teacher and leader who is extremely passionate about wildlife conservation, which made me feel even better about my decision to attend her project. I always felt 100% safe, cared for, and thought of throughout the entirety of the trip. That woman really is my hero and I couldn’t be more grateful to her! Favorite Part: Getting to advance my wildlife veterinary nursing skills while also making an active difference in African conservation. Least Favorite Part: I got super sick due to the cold winter weather, which my body was not used to! So pack cold medicine in advance and don’t just rely on your winter clothing, just to be safe!

Amazing experience and well organised!

Amazing experience and well organised! I highly recommend the Stables Project in Zimbabwe with Worldwide Vets. Sarah was brilliant at organising the trip and in communicating with us. The stay was everything we hoped for and more. Great horses, wildlife and community experiences. Living with the other volunteers added to the experience and the team on the ground were super friendly and welcoming. Loved it so much that I hope to go again.

Costa Rice Wildlife Internship

I spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica doing the Wildlife Internship and loved it. As a registered veterinary nurse gaining knowledge in practical skills with a range of species is invaluable. I was happily surprised at how independent we were allowed to be with a large range of species and would recommend to go for it if you are not sure!

Costa Rica Volunteering experience

Hello everyone, I want to share with you my volunteering experience in Costa Rica at the sanctuary « Natuwa » I booked through World Wide Vets. At 18, my goal was to travel and make a positive impact on wildlife conservation. I found Natuwa Volunteering on Instagram through World Wide Vets, attracted by the promise of meeting similar minded dedicated people and, animal care and conservation. I was a bit anxious since it was my first time travelling alone that far from home. Despite the high costs, I thought it was worth investing my hard-earned money for a 4-week program. The Zoom meeting with Sarah K. from World Wide Vets seemed promising and professional. She told me I could travel on January first since there was another group of volunteers arriving the same day. I arrived on January first at 5.30PM, it was almost dark. I was received by the night guard and another guy. The night guard barely talked. He brought me to a lonely container in the middle of the jungle, with no one else inside of it. The accommodation was not even clean, nor the toilets or showers. There was even blood on the shower curtain. I didn’t expect luxury but at least a bit comfortable and clean places for people who are paying to work for a month. I had been left alone in an environment I did not know. I was very scared. If something would have happened, there would have been no one to contact on site. (WWV gave me the number of Henry to contact but fun fact no one knew him at the sanctuary and I have never seen him during my stay.)I worked every day from 7AM to 3-4PM. There was minimal interaction from the workers, they barely talked with me, except to tell me how to cut a banana. Despite daily exhaustion from 7 AM to 3-4 PM, I felt like an outsider, more of a nuisance to the workers than a valued contributor. On the third day I finally got to meet the owner of Natuwa, Rodolfo, who gave us information about safety! After 4PM there were no activities, nothing to do and no possibility to go anywhere. After a week, safety concerns and questionable animal welfare practices prompted my decision to leave. Reporting my experience to World Wide Vets led to the program's removal from their website, reinforcing my belief that it is a dubious place. Despite seeking a refund for the remaining three weeks, my efforts were unsuccessful, they just kept the remaining 1500£(1900$). Further research revealed similar programs at a much lower cost on “volunteerworld” for example. This experience taught me the potential dangers of volunteering, especially for young and ambitious individuals.. Be cautious—social media depictions may not reflect reality. Another alerting thing I should have noticed is that there were very few independent ratings of WWV which were difficult to find. I strongly discourage considering Natuwa or booking through World Wide Vets. Take care and be mindful of your choices!
