Yanni is a pianist and composer hailing from Kalamata, Greece who was born on November 14th, 1954. Since debuting in 1980, he has released seventeen studio albums and has become one of the most respected classical crossover artists of his generation.

Born Giánnis Chrysomállis, Yanni displayed his talent for playing the piano at the tender age of six. In a way that many a pushy parent could learn from, Yanni's folks encouraged his passion without signing him up for lessons, leading the young Yanni to discover his own style of playing, learning and composition. When Yanni was 18 he moved from his native Kalamata to the United States to study at the Univeristy of Minnesota, but decided after graduating in 1976 to devote his life to music instead of his degree in psychology. He joined the band Chameleon in 1977, but continued to work on his solo pieces and artistic endeavours outside of the band, like providing music for choreographers working for the Minneapolis Dance Theatre.

He would eventually record his first album in 1980, but “Optimystique” wouldn't be released until 1984, after Yanni signed a record deal with Atlantic Records. By 1987, shortly after the release of his second album “Keys To Imagination”, he formed a band and started taking his compositions on the road, getting national recognition for a performance he did in 1988 backed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Over the next three years his public profile grew dramatically thanks to a relationship with the actress Linda Evans, a slot on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1990, and Grammy award nominations for his 1992 album “Dare To Dream” and his 1993 effort “In My Time”. This set Yanni up perfectly for his breakthrough effort, September 1993's live album “Live At The Acropolis”.

At a $2 million personal expense, Yanni booked, promoted, performed and recorded a concert at the 2000 year old Herodes Atticus Theatre at the Acropolis of Athens, releasing the resulting record in 1994. It was an astonishing success, the television broadcast of the concert alone going out to an audience of half a billion people, before the VHS tape of the show sold over 7 million copies the world over. Ever since then, Yanni has remained a revered figure in the world of classical crossover music, and in the world of New Age music (even though it's a label that he's dismissed). His concerts draw hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world, and his records continue to sell well, with two of his records peaking at number 20 on the Billboard 200. For showing just what heights a genuine composer can scale in this day and age, Yanni comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

Where do I begin? Yanni is, without a doubt, very Greek. Greeks are passionate about anything they love, and that passion spreads to all aspects of their lives. I have been listening to his music since I was about eight years old, his music helped me stay emotionally connected to the world, despite having a traumatic childhood. I was lucky to travel to various countries as a teenager, follow him on this site for concerts that could be in the country I was at any point in time. This was the first concert that he and I were in the same country; I grabbed my chance to see him up close.

The Acropolis concert happened in the same month a year before I was born, that concert should be in music history, it was his first album I listened to. His music has been my constant companion ever since, every single piece captures a different emotion one can not explain, this concert captured the same emotions I first had when I watched the CD of the Acropolis performance sixteen years ago. The orchestral members are from various countries just like how I have been to various countries and they all played beautifully. He certainly knows how to make love to his audience. That's what keeps people coming back. This was my first concert, if we happen to be in the same country again, best believe I'm going!!!

Love you Yanni!

I'd never seen Yanni live, but after watching live at the Acropolis on PBS as a kid I fell in love. This concert was as good as I could have imagined. The individual musicians were extremely talented, and it was a pleasure to watch them all play together. As yanni said throughout the performance, he is touring with what he thinks is the best orchestra on the planet. While that might not necessarily be true, these folks are GOOD. Yanni was very interactive, and even responded to audience shoutouts (in a rather humorous way. At one point, a bunch of older ladies in the front got up and started dancing, and Yanni encouraged them, which was too cute. The gentleman playing the electric bass looked to be having a hard time however, and the famous bass solo seemed to be difficult for him, as it was not as good as the performance from the original live at the acropolis album.

All in all, I loved it and will be going again next time he comes to town with his Orchestra.

Yiannis Chryssomallis American/Greek pianist and composer is considered one of the most successful classical crossover musicians of this century. The musician who grew up Stateside has always been interested in music and through a strong understanding of genre and composition, crafted a sound that melds the traditions of jazz and classical with the modern sounds of soft rock and world.

As you would expect, his music is enjoyed by a large variety of fans and although their ages and backgrounds may be different, they are brought together for their mutual enjoyment of Yanni's music. He is a world class performer who moves between his own piano and his conducting duties through the night with absolute ease and his personally collated orchestra support him throughout the show to an impossibly high standard. For a modern take on a truly classical genre, I cannot recommend Yanni's live performance enough.

The show was awesome!!Yanni was his normal, sweet charming self. Some one you would like to have for a next door neighbor loved the format of "A Conversation with Yanni" and being in the middle of the front row was almost too good to be true.

I loved the way he explained the way he writes his music. What a genius! and yet, when I ask if he liked to practice when he was little, he very firmly told me 'NO!! I hated it.' nice to know we had a least one thing in common. Can't wait util next year. His music is so beautiful. It makes me smile and then I find m self in years.

What a wonderful evening ! It was a Christmas present from my daughter and I have never received one I love more.

Thank you, Yanni, for sharing your music and your heart with the world.

This show was nothing short of amazing! It reminded me of a version of "MTV's Unplugged" including very engaging interactions with Yanni, who was so open, welcoming and simply gracious. The best part was hearing his raw, unfiltered talent with his piano. The songs he selectively chose to perform were perfect, including a few that I've never heard on the piano because they are only done via keyboard on his albums. This was very special, and I will always cherish this unique experience. Very different from his usual shows with the symphonies, but in a great way! Would highly recommend if you appreciate hearing the raw talent where it all started for Yanni.

Disappointing. I love Yanni, his creative music and his talented musicians. But it was the same show as last year. Dueling violins; solos for the violinists, horn player, harpist and Charlie the drummer. Nothing about his new album, no real new numbers to speak of. The last piece they played, Yanni wanted all of us standing and dancing. We all obliged, but the music wasn't conducive to a finale - it was rather lackluster.

His management team needs an overhaul. With all the variations and diversity of his music, this show was disappointingly ho-hum.

Yanni. He makes music - FUN.

When he performs his passion, and love of music is clearly displayed. He is having fun up on stage. He includes his ensemble in fun playful musical challenges. In addition each member performs a solo showcasing outstanding unique talents

Yanni interacts with the the audience with heartfelt stories about a songs origin, what is all about.

One of my favorite is

Until the last moment dedicated to his father.

As always, Yanni does not disappoint! Due to a passing thunderstorm the show opened about 30 minutes later due to this being an outdoor venue. Once the concert got started, the weather cleared and the crowd was transformed by the unique sounds and instruments that make up Yanni's orchestra! The Live at the Acropolis Anniversary tour is not to be missed, but check your local weather!

He was amazing!! 3 hours strong with NO intermissions!! Bout only in his music powerful , but his passion for what he does is evident!! He is engaging- my husband remarked that he's the kind of guy you want to have over for dinner and is seemingly so kind and intriguing. The photos I took will be on my site www.readyfortheafterglow.com

It was an amazing experience! I love yanni so much, both as a musician, and as a contributing person in our world! The concert and state lights were beautiful! And he sounded amazing, playing most of my favourites, and some new songs as well! Really recommend seeing yanni in concert!
