Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The first iteration of the more-basic cruise control system in older Toyota models helps the vehicle maintain a steady speed, ideal for highway cruising.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle in front, especially when the latter slows down.

When the vehicle ahead changes lanes or accelerates, the ACC will return your car to the speed you set.

Newer Toyotas have Toyota Safety Sense, a bundle of active safety features which include dynamic radar cruise control.

The following rival makes also have popular models with ACC:

  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .

Infants and Toddlers: Rear-Facing

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, your child should ride in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the seat’s height or weight limit. Infant-only car seats should always face the rear of the vehicle. Convertible and 3-in-1 car seats, which can face either the rear or the front, typically have height and weight limits for the rear-facing position that are higher than the limits on infant seats.

Toddlers and Preschoolers: Forward-Facing

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, once your child has reached the maximum height or weight limit allowed in the rear-facing position, then he or she can ride in a forward-facing car seat with a five-point harness. Keep your child in this car seat until they reach the maximum height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer in the forward-facing position.

School-Age Children: Booster Seat

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, once your child has reached the maximum height or weight allowed in the forward-facing car seat with harness, transition to a booster seat. Your child should still ride in the rear seat at all times.

Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control: Everything You Need to Know

Cars with adaptive cruise control used to be considered a luxury only featured in state-of-the-art vehicles. Still, with technological advancements, adaptive cruise control is now a common feature found in many different car models.

Cruise control buttons on modern car and speed limitation

Cars with adaptive cruise control used to be considered a luxury only featured in state-of-the-art vehicles. Still, with technological advancements, adaptive cruise control is now a common feature found in many different car models. Autobytel says this means ACC is now accessible to everyone, and even if your current vehicle doesn't have ACC, you can always have it installed.

What Does Adaptive Cruise Control Do?

Adaptive cruise control uses advanced sensory technology to determine your car's speed in proximity to other vehicles or objects on or around the roadway. It applies moderate brakes and warning signals when a driver is getting to close to another car. Drivers can set the speed limit on the ACC so that they don't exceed the speed limit, but when the sensory technology detects traffic or other unsafe conditions, it reduces the driver's speed to adapt to them.

The Best Cars With Adaptive Cruise Control

1. 2020 bmw 3 series.

This brand new model offers the best combination of sensory technology . It uses cameras in addition to ultrasonic and radar sensors to pull data about the environment surrounding the vehicle. In addition to its sensory features, it also has a "stop-and-go" brake feature, great for commuters who spend extended amounts of time in stand-still traffic as it alleviates the stress on the driver's legs and feet. What's more, the camera sensor can pick up traffic signs such as speed limit signs and reduce or increase speed to match the recommended rate of speed.

2. 2020 Volvo S60

This new model by Volvo has a "Pilot Assist" feature, which makes driving safe and easy. What this feature does is it helps the driver maintain the proper speed with neighboring vehicles, and it also provides steering assistance along with automatic braking or accelerating for situations such as stop-and-go to free-flowing traffic. Another great aspect of this model is that it doesn't rely on a lead car to determine speed and spacing, so you can use it even when you aren't near another car.

3. 2020 Hyundai Sonata

This new Hyundai model has the same technological systems as other Hyundai models, called "SmartSense advanced driving assistance systems." The 2020 Hyundai Sonata includes SmartSense features such as five cameras, three radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to help with things such as advanced cruise control, stop-and-go feature, warning signals, and automatic braking or accelerating.

4. 2020 Nissan Altima

The 2020 Nissan Altima features Nissan's "ProPilot Assist" system, which uses advanced technology to help drivers practice safe driving. It allows drivers with automatic acceleration and braking for speed and distance control, while it also uses automatic steering to help them maintain lane control. These helpful features are made possible by its front-facing cameras, sensors, radar, and electronic control module.

5. 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

This new model provides drivers with an adaptive cruise control system, specifically designed for highway travel. Its cruise control features include cameras within the car and radar sensors on the front grille that can gauge your car's proximity and speed when compared to other vehicles around you. Similarly, these sensors help determine the rate of speed of the vehicle in front of you and automatically decrease your speed if the vehicle in front of you slows down.

The Cheapest Cars With Adaptive Cruise Control

According to U.S.News, here are some examples of the cheapest cars you can buy that still have adaptive cruise control features:

1. 2019 Kia Soul

You can get Kia's "smart cruise control" feature as part of their "Primo Package." This add-on is around $4,500 in addition to the original selling-price. You can save energy with its automatic braking system, and also keep a safe following distance thanks to its forward-collision warning feature. In addition to these safety features, the Kia Soul also provides drivers with a heated steering wheel, and in-depth seat adjustments to meet more complex needs for your body type.

2. 2018 Mazda 3

The 2018 Mazda 3 provides drivers with an adaptive cruise control system that detects rear-cross traffic and blind-spot monitoring, great for making safe lane changes. It also offers a "premium equipment package" for just $1,600 in addition to the original selling price. This package gives your vehicle advanced safety features and other add-ons such as a heated steering wheel and a built-in navigation system.

3. 2018 Hyundai Sonata

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata offers buyers the "technology package" for just $1,000. Included in this package are adaptive cruise control to help drivers maintain a safe following distance and adequate speed. This model also comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

4. 2018 Toyota Rav4

This 2018 Toyota Rav4 SUV includes an adaptive cruise control system for a fee that increases the original selling price to just above $25,000. When you turn your ACC feature on, it uses its radar sensors to administer collision warnings, automatic braking, and acceleration to make sure that your vehicle moves at a safe pace and maintains an appropriate following distance from other vehicles on the roadway at all times.

The 2018 Toyota Rav4's adaptive cruise control system is categorized as "standard equipment" in Toyota's "Safety Sense P suite of technology," Making it a high-tech safety vehicle for a reasonable price point.

5. 2018 Honda Accord

The 2018 Honda Accord features a state-of-the-art adaptive cruise control system called the "Honda Sensing System." This system offers not only adaptive cruise control but also several other useful safety features, including automatic braking for collision prevention and traffic sign recognition.

These features are powered by camera sensing technology that can read traffic signs such as speed limit markers and adjust the Accord's speed to fit those speed requirements. You can get even more safety features by upgrading to higher-trims.

As adaptive cruise control becomes more readily available, you can find cheap and affordable car models that include much of the same technology as modern luxury cars.

How to use Adaptive Cruise Control on Toyota Sienna

With some minor differences, operating the available Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system is very similar to conventional cruise control. However, when the system detects slower traffic ahead, it will slow the Sienna automatically to match their speed and maintain a preset distance.

adaptive cruise control button toyota

You can change that distance using a button on the steering wheel. When activated, the system defaults to the long setting. A display in the instrument cluster indicates which distance has been selected. Pressing the button repeatedly allows you to cycle through the three distances available.

The driver can disable the distance holding feature by pressing and holding the cruise control stalk forward for at least two seconds. The Ready Indicator and distance graphic will disappear in the instrument cluster.

Auto cancel below 25 mph

The vehicle-to-vehicle distance control feature will be automatically canceled when the vehicle falls below 25 miles per hour, Vehicle Stability Control, or VSC, is activated, the sensor is covered or blocked, the brake is applied, or the windshield wipers are running continuously.

How The Camry’s Adaptive Cruise Control Works

Mechanical Details of the DRCC

On any stretch of road, cruise control allows you to give your leg a rest by automatically engaging the vehicle to continue on at current speed while at the same time depending on your input for minor steering changes and braking. The DRCC goes a step further, using active vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to automatically brake the vehicle when another car enters into the lane in front of you. Using radar technology, the vehicle gauges the speed of the car ahead of your own and then automatically adjusts your vehicle speed to maintain the preset following distance. It’s almost like having a car drive itself.

As time goes by, there will be a lot more advances in drive assist controls, but for now the DRCC from Toyota is the most advanced system currently on the market. Additional safety is always a positive thing and Toyota has been mindful of the safety of its vehicle occupants from day one. If you’re interested in trying out Toyota’s DRCC, you can check out Warrenton Toyota in Warrenton, VA today and get a feel for this remarkable new technology yourself!

How To Turn Off Adaptive Cruise Control Toyota Highlander

When it came to my 2014, I had previously written instructions on how to turn off the dynamic radar speed control. Toyota has altered the method, making it a little bit simpler, as Vet Interested has pointed out. A procedure that took up almost an entire manual page in 2014 is now condensed to a single bullet point in the 2017 version. But the answer is just there, right in front of us. Instead of immediately pressing the stalk’s end button to activate cruise control, you can cancel the radar cruise and switch to conventional cruise by holding the button down for a few seconds. The panel between your speedometer and tachometer will show that alert.

Page 220 of your 2017 Avalon owner’s handbook contains this information. That page contains the attachment you’re about to see.

In This Article...

How can you stop the Toyota Highlander’s cruise control?

Thank you for the new automobile! Finding your way around a new automobile can take some time, but the Toyota Highlander’s cruise control can be disabled in a number of ways. One can:

  • Brake the vehicle. It can be temporarily disabled by applying the brakes.
  • Use the stalk for the cruise control. You may turn off cruise control by pulling the stalk in your direction.

Try hitting the ON/OFF button on the stalk if these other options are unsuccessful for you. The button may need to be held down for a few seconds because touching it just once might just turn off radar cruise control rather than all cruise control features.

Why not spend a little more time learning about your insurance options with the Jerry app while you’re already learning about your new car? Simply download the app and respond to a few brief questions to get customised quotes from more than 50 of the best insurance companies in just a few seconds.

How do I deactivate the adaptive cruise control?

You can disable Adaptive Cruise Control by doing any of the following:

  • Step on the brakes.
  • Select CANCEL from the menu.
  • Press the ON/OFF button for the cruise control.

Is adaptive cruise control available for the Toyota Highlander?

Drivers who are considering buying an SUV might be interested in learning more about its overall safety. Because of this, we frequently receive inquiries from people who are considering the 2021 Toyota Highlander. Do you want to know what safety features the Toyota Highlander will come with as standard in 2021? Read our analysis below to learn more about the many safety features and driving aids offered by this SUV.

Toyota Adaptive Cruise Control: How Does It Work?

The Toyota automobiles’ adaptive cruise control operates by spotting other cars in its lane. Depending on how close you are to other vehicles, it might both speed up and slow down your car. If necessary, it can even automatically apply the brakes.

You must push the On/Off button to turn on the ACC. The stalk must then be turned on by accelerating to the desired speed. Press the stalk and keep it down to set the ACC to that speed; after that, you can let go of it. You can use the On/Off Button once more to turn off the ACC.

Why is radar cruise control inaccessible on my Toyota?

The front sensors of your Toyota could be obstructed by snow or dirt. Simply clean the front grill of your car to make room for the sensor. You should be able to utilize cruise control once more after doing this, which should turn off the notification. Try it again after taking your car through the car wash if you’re still experiencing issues.

What does Toyota’s dynamic cruise control do?

Control for Dynamic Radar Cruise This sophisticated cruise control adjusts your speed while using radar and a camera on the windshield to assist you keep a predetermined distance from the vehicle in front of you.

How is adaptive cruise activated?

1. Press the cruise control ON/OFF button on the steering wheel to activate the feature. If your car has a Head-Up Display, or a cluster display, you’ll see a white ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL icon when the system is turned on. An arc with a tiny triangle pointing through it or a speedometer with a car on top might be the icon.

2. While moving at the specified speed, press the SET button to select a cruise speed. When the system is in use, the white ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL symbol will turn green.

WHAT IT DOES

The speed of your car can be adjusted via adaptive cruise control to keep a predetermined following distance. Modern versions may even slow, stop, and accelerate your automobile for you while it is stuck in traffic.

THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND IT

Radar and computer-connected cameras are just a couple of the sensors that scan the road in front of you for traffic. Any cars that are in front of you in your lane can be read by them, and they can react accordingly.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

Once you’ve reached your desired speed, activate the ACC. The ACC is then set to start working once you specify how close you want the next distance gap to be (usually, short, medium, and long distances). You should still pay attention to your surroundings, though. It is advised not to utilize ACC while it is raining or when there are other hazardous driving conditions. For more details, consult your owner’s handbook.

TIPS FOR USING

  • With ACC, you can maintain your following distance from the vehicles in front of you with less effort. Take use of this opportunity to focus more on the variety of traffic, including vehicles in front of you and in lanes to your side.
  • To find out if your ACC can stop your car or if you have to stop manually, check your owner’s manual.
  • Be advised that some weather conditions may prevent ACC from functioning properly. These include conditions where there is a lot of fog or rain, when the sensors are covered in snow, ice, or dirt, or when the roads are slick. Additionally, tunnels may not support certain systems.

Is adaptive cruise control the same as dynamic radar cruise control?

By allowing you to select a predetermined pace using traditional cruise control, you can let up on the gas pedal. Smart cruise, dynamic cruise, and adaptive cruise control all go a step further by recognizing and responding to the vehicles in front of you.

How can I fix the momentarily faulty adaptive cruise?

Only for Adaptive Cruise, which is momentarily unavailable: The Multi Axis Sensor Learn will be used to resolve the majority of the cars. Perform the Long Range Radar Learn specified in the Radar Sensor Module – Long Range Programming and Setup process in Service Information if the issue is still present.

Is adaptive cruise control financially worthwhile?

Prior to a few years ago, ACC was normally only available on more expensive higher trim levels unless you were purchasing a luxury vehicle. And to some extent, it is still true. Numerous vehicles are sold with a standard package that is devoid of numerous features, including ACC, additional safety controls, and GPS. But those can be quickly added by upgrading the vehicle’s trim or adding a premium package.

Is adaptive cruise control therefore worthwhile? Absolutely. It’s a game-changer, as we previously stated, especially on longer road journeys. Modern ACC is 100 percent worth the higher cost, unlike outdated cruise control, which was not worth the work it took to activate.

Thankfully, technology has improved to the point that nearly every new car is essentially a large computer, and the majority of new cars come with advanced or adaptive cruise control. Adaptive cruise control, for instance, is currently regarded by Toyota as “standard equipment on all vehicles.

Make sure adaptive cruise control is a feature of your next vehicle if you plan to purchase a new or barely used vehicle anytime soon. Later on, you can thank me.

What issues do Toyota Highlanders have?

Similar problems with the motorized tailgate and air conditioning system plagued the Toyota Highlander’s previous version from 2008 to 2013. A few owners have also complained of oil leaks from the engine and clunking sounds they hear when rotating the steering wheel.

The Toyota Highlander’s AWD is constantly engaged.

The amount of power supplied to each wheel is not adjusted by this arrangement. Even when the electromagnetic coupler is disabled, the driveshaft that drives the AWD is continuously turning in this arrangement. The vehicle may experience some increased drag as a result, although only 3 or 4 MPG are lost.

Toyota first used adaptive cruise control when?

On the Japanese market Celsior, Toyota featured a “laser adaptive cruise control” (lidar) system. Instead of using the brakes to slow down, it used throttle control and downshifting. In 1999, Mercedes-Benz launched “Distronic,” the company’s first radar-assisted ACC, to the CL-Class and S-Class models.

Can cruise control reduce fuel use?

Yes, generally speaking. Due to its capacity to maintain a constant pace, cruise control can help you become more fuel-efficient and can help you save on gas on average by 714%. In contrast, the constant acceleration and deceleration caused by the driver’s foot on the pedals might use up more gas.

How does a 2020 Highlander’s cruise control work?

Press the button at the end of the control stalk behind the lower right corner of the steering wheel to activate Cruise Control before using it. When the system is prepared, the green cruise control icon will appear in the instrument display. Once you’ve reached the desired speed, depress the stalk to lock it in place.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Another newbie question. Can someone go through the steps to turn on the Cruise Control. I have read through the suggested quick manual and have asked the dealer. No results. Dealer suggests to first press the icon button showing the "control" (far right button on steering wheel ) and then rapidly press the minus button and then the plus button to turn everything on. What ?? Shouldn't just pressing the first button turn on the Cruise control and then using the plus and minus buttons to adjust the speed ?

adaptive cruise control button toyota

Press the button to the right of the CANCEL button to enable cruise control (button shows a car with speedometer and arrow), then get to the speed you want and press the - SET button. That should do it, no?

Today I had an issue where the set function would not work, I discovered after reviewing many settings that the Trail mode button had gotten pressed. This selection shows up on the dash between the EV and HV mode displays. There is no indicator on the button itself. Cruise Control can not be set when in Trail mode (makes sense).

Others have answered your question and it's the same way my '18 Accord works except that I must have Cruise enabled by default since all I have to do is hit the + or - to set a speed and we're crusin,' but you did make a mistake by thinking the dealer might know. When will people realize their ONLY job is SELLING cars using whatever truth or lies and smile it takes to do that. Once you've bought they've done their job and have ZERO incentive to actually help. They can say whatever it takes, with a smile of course, to make you stop bothering them and go away.

It helps to understand what is happening if you have the lane assist displayed on the instrument panel. When you press the right side of the right hand control pad on the steering wheel, the display will show "Radar Ready". If you press it again the "Radar Ready" goes away. You can think of this control as being the button for cruise control on and off. With it on, you can either get up to the maximum speed that you want and then press the lower part of the control pad which is labeled as "Set" and has a minus sign. Cruise control will be working at that point as will the lane centering feature. On the instrument panel you will see three bars on the road between the lanes. These represent the sensitivity of the radar system. There is a button on the steering wheel just to the left of the control pad. The graphic is really small, but is supposed to be the front of a car with the radar beams coming off of it. If you press the button, one of the three bars on the instrument panel goes away, showing that the sensitivity has been reduced. If you press it again, another bar goes away, leaving you with a single one. That is the least sensitive setting. I set mine to the middle one, which gives me the clearance between my car and the one in front of me to be about what I'm used to. If you press on the brakes or press "Cancel" (which is in the center of the control pad), the cruise control will be interrupted. When you press the upper part of the control pad (marked "Res" and plus sign) it will resume operation at your previous settings. The plus and minus are good for making adjustments if the maximum speed needs to be increased or reduced. What is nice is that each press will increase or decrease by one MPH and it will show on the instrument panel what the new speed setting will be. The only other thing that you might want to know is that if you want the cruise control to work like a 20th century car, you can press and hold the cruise control on button for a few seconds (I don't remember if it's 3 or 5) and it will allow for standard cruise control without the radar and I believe the lane centering. If you want the radar cruise control, but you don't want the lane centering assist, there is a button right below the radar sensitivity button which is supposed to look like a car which is heading out of it's lane. Press this button to turn this system on and off. I thought it felt really weird initially and didn't care for it. However, after using it for awhile it felt more comfortable and I did like it, at least on the highways. When the car can see the sides of the road then blue bars appear over the edges. I'm not sure what they are supposed to look like, but I think of them as force fields that are keeping the car in the lane. It actually does a good job of turning through a gradual turn. It's not autonomous driving though, if you take your hands off the steering wheel you get an alert, and if you still don't put your hands on the wheel, the lane center keeping (and I assume the cruise control) shuts off. What I haven't seen yet is that instead of the force fields, you might see a dashed line between your car and the one in front of you. This means that the system isn't confident in it's lane keeping and instead is following the car in front of you. This could be bad if the car in front of you exits the highway, and even worse if you're following Thelma and Louise toward the Grand Canyon.

Our salesperson was a young kid - I thought at least he would know the infotainment side of the car but he didn't have much of a clue. It took him over an hour to drop the air pressure in the tires - If I had known it was going to take so long I would not have asked them to do it.

If you step on the brake, it will cancel the cruise, just press the top button ("+RES") to resume the speed you initially set. To set a higher or lower speed while you are cruising, hold down the + or - buttons. The set speed will go up or down by 1 mph. Let go of the button when you are at the speed you want. If you use the "HOLD" button every time you start the car, you can also resume the cruise after you have come to a complete stop. The car will not move until you step on the gas pedal. Cool.

Thanks everyone......where exactly does the "car with the speedometer and arrow" appear ? I don't see it anywhere just a flat line with a curled end and it does say "radar ready or something" .......no cruise control. Do you have to hit the bottom button with the minus sign right after turning the thing on ?

You don't have to be in a hurry to press the "Set" button after turning it on. Think about the older cruise controls where you could turn it on and then take your time getting up to the right speed before pressing the "Set" button. I haven't tried holding the power button in to engage the old school cruise control option. Maybe it will say "Cruise Control" then, otherwise it will say "Radar Ready" to let you know the system is on.

Look at the graphic in post #3 - Item "C" points right to the "car with speedometer" graphic. The radar message indicates the radar for adaptive cruise is turned on. Then you just push the minus sign when you get to the speed you want. Keep it simple to start with then play with it once you get used to that.

I detest tailgating in any way especially at freeway speeds. How does the 'vehicle-to-vehicle' distance get set so what might the range of distance be between you and the car in front at say 70mph?

adaptive cruise control button toyota

Not sure if the RAV system works the same as my Sienna, but they are both Toyotas, so there is a chance. I was also curious about following distances in the various settings. After playing a bit at different speeds, it appears that setting #3 (the farthest one) gives about a 2 or 2.5 second following distance. Note that it will be a greater distance at 70 mph than it will be at 40, but it's still just over 2 seconds. Setting #2 is between 1.5 and 2 seconds. Setting #1 is just over 1 second. I usually leave my Sienna in the default #3, but I have found that if there is a bit of traffic, there is just enough space ahead of you to invite people to pull in front of you. Because they are now the vehicle that is being tracked, you will slow down. Again. And again. I will go to setting #2 or even #1 to minimize the 'invitation', but there is no way to fully prevent it unless you get out of that lane.

I'd guess the following distance is coded into the firmware based on vehicle speed. There is also an adjustment you can make between 3 levels using the A button in the picture (1, 2 or 3 bars will be displayed). The settings cycle around starting at 3 (IIRC), then 2, then 1, then 3, etc. 3 is farthest away and 1 is closest.

Drive to the position you want to stay behind the vehicle in front of you and push button "A" in the graphic in post #3. I did not find the distance to be "model" i.e. set based on a single, double, or triple bar mode. Jetstream may be totally correct - I did not even see the bars but my R4P seemed to keep the distance I was at when I pushed the button.

Thanks 8AA since this is how I understand it and how I have been trying to activate it. However, I don't think the symbols displayed on the MID are what they should be........as I stated, I do see "radar ready" but that's it. Could someone please share a photo (jpg) of the MID screen when the cruise control is activated .? Thanks

It's really annoying and took me a while on the way home from the dealer. First is press the dial on the right side of the steering wheel. Speedometer icon button. Second, press the (-) slow-down button in the same cluster. Third, set speed desired via the reduce/increase buttons Fourth, set your follow distance with the button to do so in the same cluster.

I think I word it a bit differently: First is press the dial on the right side of the steering wheel. Speedometer icon button. Second, accelerate/decelerate to your desired cruise speed. Third, press the (-) set/slow-down button in the same cluster to set your desired cruise speed. Fourth (optional), if the default follow distance doesn't suit your needs, set your follow distance with the button to do so in the same cluster. If you wish to adjust your speed at any time while in cruise, use the + and - buttons to increase and decrease (respectively) your speed in 1 mph steps.

I found it fairly easy to use once I got the hang of it. The "on" selection is poor and confusing but the increase/decrease speed functions are great and for me the following distance adjustment was intuitive. At first it bothered me that it would actively slow the car so fast when the car in front slows down (I am used to ICE cars and tend to look forward to see if I can avoid braking before the slowdown clears) but once I realized the regen was capturing a good percentage of that energy I got used to it. It does accelerate fairly quickly if you switch to an open lane (and are below your target speed) but that only bothered me because I worried about limited acceleration during break-in period).

I'm with you. The button labels/positions may not be the best for some folks, but fundamentally it's the same process in pretty much every vehicle. Turn cruise on, drive to your desired speed, and hit set. At any point while in cruise, adjust speed with +/- if desired. The adaptive distance and lane centering are new to me as well, and like you I wasn't sure I liked either. But I quickly came to appreciate the benefits that these features offer, and I am now completely comfortable with them.

Not sure if it's breen mentioned, but you can set regular cruise mode (not adaptive) by pressing and holding the Cruise button for 3 seconds. You'll see a msg about normal cruise mode and can then press the Set button.

adaptive cruise control button toyota

Interesting ... thanks for pointing this out. I'll try it out. I have thought of times when I'd like to be in just plain cruise control and not ACC. I'm not sure how it is with the RAV4 Prime, but I know with Volvos, their brakes seem to wear out much faster when driving a lot in ACC, according to owners on Volvo forums (I'm trying to remember if PHEVs were involved in those discussions or only ICEVs now)...

surfstar said: The worst thing about the cruise control is that Toyota has a perfectly functional stalk CC setup that you can use blindfolded and has been the same for decades. It is the same setup on my wife's 2022 Prius Prime as my brother's 200X Tacoma. Then they had to go and add buttons to the Rav steering wheel and axe the stalk? - Why? Probably b/c adding buttons to the wheel makes it look like there are more "features" Click to expand...

You can override it simply by turning the wheel. But I assure you if it gets in Lane Assist and the driver does not know what is going on it can make for a very uncomfortable ride for the passenger. It took us awhile to figure out what was going on when my wife was driving and it was like driving a car with bad tie rod ends or an otherwise very loose suspension - all over the road. My advice to anybody unfamiliar with these features is to turn it all off to start and then turn on and learn one component at a time. i.e. turn on adaptive cruise and learn how that works, then turn on LDA, then LTA, etc. Here is a pretty good video of these features in action: (long but informative)

I don't understand the confusion. 1 Press the cruise arm button and release. 2 Press the follow distance ( upper left of the Cruise circle of controls. Press one for long distance, press twice for medium distance, press three times for short follow distance. After a bit of experience, it is fast and easy to setup. 3 Now you can accelerate to your planned speed, and press SET. Look at the speed on the gauges in front of you and you can quickly see what you have. If required, press + or - as required. NOTE Hold the + or - and the set speed will go up or down in 5mph increments. It happens faster than you would think. I truly don't see the fuss over some very simple rote maneuverers. FWIW

I join this "post" to ask you if the Adaptive Cruise Control works with thick fog? Don't scold me ... I didn't read the whole "post" and maybe someone already wrote it !

adaptive cruise control button toyota

Yes. It uses a combination of radar and camera so even if there is fog the radar will still work.

I would say excellent ... with thick fog ka an extra hand 'does not hurt!

Change Default Cruise Control Settings

  • Add to quote

The cruise control button defaults to "Adaptive Cruise Control - 3 bars". Changing it to a different setting requires pressing another button multiple times or holding the cruise control button down for a few seconds. Is there a way to change this default setting to, say, "1 bar" or "Static Cruise Control"?

adaptive cruise control button toyota

It's an option through the OBD port. I bought a Carista on Amazon and changed a bunch of options, but I left that one at three bars because the wife drives my HiHy from time to time. The manual lists the available options. The Carista give you a 30-day free subscription when you purchase one AND sign up for their monthly service. I signed up and cancelled the service before the 30-days expired. Your dealership can changed the settings too; but they may charge you. The Carista is currently $30 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Carista-Bluetooth-Adapter-iPhone-Android/dp/B00YVHGTBM

Do you remember which setting this is in Carista. I used Carista to set up customizations on my 2018 Non-hybrid model and did not see anything for the cruise. There were settings for distances related to the PCS (pre-collision) system, but I did not see anything related to the dynamic cruise distance ???

2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid: Everything Confirmed So Far

Set to hit Toyota showrooms across the United States in late spring 2024, the upgraded 2025 Toyota Camry receives a refreshed design inside and out, upgraded mechanicals, and hybrid technology as standard on every model in the lineup.

The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid's "hammerhead" face is inspired by the latest Mk5 Toyota Prius , and the new cabin is a vast improvement on the outgoing car. Whilst the 2025 Camry Hybrid is an update of its predecessor and not an all-new vehicle, Toyota has dropped the 3.5-liter V6 for the 2025 Camry line-up. The updated model's only choice of engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid across the board. Front-wheel drive versions of the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid receive a twin-electric motor system that combines for 225 horsepower; a third motor fitted to all-wheel drive models makes for 232 horsepower.

Toyota estimates that an entry-level, front-wheel drive Toyota Camry Hybrid LE will return a combined 51 miles per gallon , which is just one mile less than the latest Prius. Given the 2025 Camry Hybrid is yet to go on sale, the EPA has yet to confirm an official figure.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid has long been the best-selling sedan in the U.S. thanks to its bombproof reliability, practicality, and thoughtful character. With the visual and mechanical updates that Toyota has introduced with its latest version, this ninth-generation car has every opportunity to pick up where its predecessors left off.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Toyota and other authoritative sources, including the EPA, the NHTSA, and the IIHS.

2025 Toyota Camry First Drive: Mom's Spaghetti Sauce Just Got Better

The 2025 toyota camry redesigned inside and out.

The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid is not an all-new car. Like its predecessor, it is based on Toyota's TNGA-K platform , and built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) in Georgetown. Side-on, its profile is more or less the same as the outgoing 2024 Camry. A new front-end affords this latest Camry a sharper appearance and an updated interior reminiscent of the one found in the flagship Toyota Crown.

Interior Vastly Improved Over Outgoing Camry Hybrid

There wasn't anything wrong with the interior of the outgoing 2024 Toyota Camry Hybrid. It was well-screwed together and everything was done to the standard expected from Toyota. However, it was visually busy, and entry-level cars were not as pleasantly finished as some of their rivals. With the Toyota 2025 Camry Hybrid, it's all changed.

The functional cabin's layout isn't dissimilar to the Toyota Crown's , and each of the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid's four trim levels comes with a centrally-mounted infotainment display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, a digitized gauge display, and wireless mobile phone charging as standard. Toyota has also resisted removing physical buttons for the HVAC controls. The seat fabrics of this latest Camry Hybrid are continued over to the dashboard to create a thought-provoking visual.

Cabin Space And Cargo Capacity

Despite the facelift and updated cabin, the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid retains all the practicality that has made it such a favorite among the U.S. buyers over the years. The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid can comfortably accommodate five adults, whilst an optional panoramic glass roof - a first for the model - only adds to the interior's sense of space and airiness.

2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid Interior Dimensions

(Figures sourced from Toyota)

Given the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid is based on the same platform as its predecessor, there has been no improvement in terms of loading capabilities. Its minimum cargo capacity is 15.1 cubic-feet. For comparison, hybrid rivals such as the Honda Accord Hybrid and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid all have greater loading capacities.

2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid Cargo Capacity

2025 toyota camry: everything thats changed for the new generation, toyota's fifth-gen hybrid tech standard across the 2025 camry range.

Unlike its predecessor, the 2025 Toyota Camry is hybrid only and comes with the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System , or "THS 5" in Toyota Speak. These electrified underpinnings were introduced for the 2023 model year and form the basis for the hybrid systems offered in the Prius, C-HR, Corolla, Yaris, Yaris Cross, RAV-4, and Highlander. For the first time in the Camry's history, the 2025 car is available with an AWD drivetrain.

Available With FWD And AWD

The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid is only available with one choice of engine; Toyota's 2.5-liter, four-cylinder. This is offered as either a front-wheel drive dual-motor hybrid, or an all-wheel drive tri-motor hybrid . With a third electric motor mounted on the rear axle, the AWD system has an on-demand torque distribution system, which is activated if the car detects a slippy road surface or front-wheel slippage.

In line with Toyota's carbon-neutral pledge, the hybrid system has been developed to reduce power from the internal combustion engine at lower speeds, and draw power from the electric motor to offer improved acceleration and torque. The 2025 Toyota Camry's engine is mated to an automatic CVT transmission.

Up To 232 Horsepower At Your Disposal

Despite being fielded by Legacy Motor Club and driven by Jimmie Johnson in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series, the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid is far from being a performance sedan. Nonetheless, its hybrid system represents a step up in performance over its predecessor. Cars with a front-wheel drive configuration produce 225 horsepower, whilst those specced with the all-wheel drive system are good for 232 horsepower thanks to the addition of a third electric motor.

(Specs sourced from Toyota)

The all-wheel drive version of the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid represents a 30-horsepower jump over the car it replaces. The EPA has yet to test the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid. However, Toyota has provided estimated fuel consumption figures. For now, though, official EPA data shows that the outgoing 2024 Toyota Camry Hybrid is fractionally more efficient than the car its successor thanks to its combined return of 52 miles per gallon.

Why The 2025 Toyota Camry Should Be On The Top Of Your New-Car List

Four trim levels available.

With its latest Camry, Toyota has reduced the trim levels of the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid to just four: the comfort-focused entry-level LE, sharper mid-range SE and XLE models, and the flagship XSE. Unlike its predecessor, a hybrid drivetrain is standard across the range. The SE and XSE receive a sport-tuned suspension and new shock absorbers to make for a smoother ride. LE models come with 16-inch wheels, SE and XLE have 18 inch wheels, whilst the XSE rides on 19s.

Inside the 2025 Toyota Camry's improved cabin , the seat material is also used on the lower half of the dashboard and door inserts. LE cars receive a grey cloth, SE trim gets a textured pinstripe fabric, the XLE boasts a microfiber finish, whilst the XSE has a black or red SofTex leather finish. Each trim level has wireless mobile phone charging as standard, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Across the cabin, there are five USB ports. LE and SE cars come with an eight-inch infotainment screen, whilst higher-end cars receive a 12-inch variant.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 Offered As Standard

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 2024 Toyota Camry Hybrid a Top Safety Pick rating . Thanks to Toyota's Safety Sense 3.0 suite (TSS 3.0), the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid looks set to continue this trend of offering outstanding levels of pedestrian and occupant protection. TSS 3.0 includes the following safety features:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist

Each 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid has automated emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlamps, and adaptive cruise control as standard.

Once again, the 2025 Camry Hybrid is a segment leader thanks to Toyota's two years of scheduled maintenance. The ownership benefits are as follows:

  • Limited warranty covering three years (36,000 miles)
  • Powertrain warranty covering five years (60,000 miles)
  • Hybrid parts covered for eight years (100,000 miles)
  • Complimentary maintenance covered for two years or (25,000 miles)

10 Things To Know About The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid

The 2025 toyota camry hybrid starts at $29,495.

The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid has a starting MSRP of $29,495 for the entry-level front-wheel drive LE trim including destination fees. The flagship XSE AWD - without options - will cost $36,125. The addition of Toyota's $4,075 Premium Plus package offering additional ADAS equipment, a JBL sound system, a driver's heads-up display, ventilated front seats, and a panoramic glass roof will see the top-tier Camry's price tag jump to just over $40,200. AWD is $1,525 across the board.

Surprisingly, the entry-level trim is more affordable than the outgoing 2024 Camry Hybrid. Given inflation, the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid is more expensive than the 2024 car. However, the LE trim costs $455 less than its outgoing equivalent.
