Family Fun, Favorites, Food, and Faith

The Best Journey Takes You Home {Printable} (she: Brooke)

Happy Friday OSSS readers!  It’s me, Brooke once again from Blissful Roots .  My boys are wrapping up their spring break today.  We spent a lot of fun days at grandpa and grandma’s and then a few nights in a hotel close to home with a fantastic kiddy pool and slide!  As much fun as we always have when my boys are out of school, I do look forward to getting back into our regular routine.

The Best Journey takes you home

I had a lot of ideas bouncing around in my head for today’s post, but several weeks ago I was strolling through a local craft store ( All That Stuff in the Barn ) and came across a sign that read “The Best Journey Takes You Home.”  I had to pull out my phone and take a picture of it because I immediately fell in love with the words, and I knew I wanted to use it for my guest post here today.  It reminds me of another favorite quote of mine:

A man travels the world over in search of what he needs, and returns home to find it.

-george a. moore.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit of a home body.  I love to travel!  I don’t do it very often, but every time I do, I enjoy every minute of it- the sights, the sounds, the food, the people, the beauty.  But, I have to say there’s nothing quite like the feeling of going home.  Going home after a vacation, going home for the holidays, going home after a long day at school or work.  I have yet to find anything that replaces that special, familiar, comforting feeling of returning home.  I want my boys to have that same feeling.  I cannot wait to see what life has in store for each of them.  I know they’ll go out into the world, have many experiences and adventures.  But as a mother, I want nothing more than to create an atmosphere in my home that invites them to return again and again.

Stay home

I did a post quite some time ago over at Blissful Roots entitled  Finding Reasons to Stay Home .  In that post, I talk several reasons I try to stay home more often than not, and how we can do our best to make our homes (as humble or grand as they may be) a place that people want to be.  It can be a cruel, harsh world at times.  Our families need a safe haven to return to!

“The most important of the Lord’s work you will ever do will be the work you do within the walls of your own home.” ―  Harold B. Lee

I hope you can find a spot for today’s printable in your home somewhere to remind you what a special place a home can, and should be.  Click  here  to print yours today.

I’ll be back in May, but until then feel free to stop over and visit me at Blissful Roots !  Mother’s Day is coming up next month.  I have a fun watercolor art project that’s perfect for mom’s special day, a beautiful version of my DIY gift box to put that special gift in for mom, and of course, some wonderful Mother’s Day printables that are easy to print, frame, and give away.

The best journey takes you home – expats return to SA to invest in property

  • Send to a friend
• More sharing options More sharing options

Source: Supplied.

With the exchange rate in their favour, many expatriates are looking to invest in property in South Africa, where they can be assured of comparatively better value for their long-term financial stability, says Bradd Bendall, chief executive officer (interim) of BetterBond.

“Inflation and higher interest rates are not unique to South Africa but having pounds or dollars in the bank does give buyers of local properties a considerable financial edge. It is therefore not surprising that, according to the Prime Residential Index (PIRI 100), Cape Town has one of the best performing luxury markets in the world.”

The latest Knight Frank Report (2024) notes that in London, $1m (R18.8m) will buy about 33m² of property. In Sydney, you can get an extra 10m² for the same value, while in Cape Town, you can buy 196m² for that amount. Re/Max currently has a listing for a four-bedroom 226m² apartment in Camps Bay, on the Atlantic Seaboard, for R18.5m.

But Cape Town is not the only city attracting expatriates, says Bendall. While Cape Town has plenty to offer in terms of lifestyle, Gauteng is still viewed as a destination of economic opportunity – it is the largest provincial contributor (34%) to the national economy – offering varied employment prospects and higher salaries, says Bendall.

According to BetterBond’s February Property Brief , Gauteng dominated the home-loan market for the 12 months to January 2024, with two regions – Johannesburg North West and Johannesburg South East – accounting for more than half of all home loans during that period.

With the semigration momentum driving house-price inflation in Cape Town and many of the smaller coastal towns, Gauteng often offers more value for money, notes Bendall. For South Africans choosing to repatriate, and who are already dealing with the cost of relocation, Gauteng is an attractive option.

Those who have returned to work for companies in Gauteng are choosing to settle in the northern suburbs such as Sandton or Hyde Park, or even nearby Pretoria which offers a quality lifestyle just a short commute from Johannesburg.

Seeking financial comfort

“Anecdotally, we are hearing that many of the returning expatriates are those who settled overseas before they were married, and now want to settle in their home country with their families so that they can offer them a better quality lifestyle. They have pounds or dollars saved up, and they know they can afford far more than they could overseas,” says Bendall.

Some of these buyers may still be working for overseas companies, but the ability to work remotely from anywhere in the world has made it possible for them to settle back at home. “Some even opt to buy second properties in South Africa where they return for the summer, while working remotely.”

Furthermore, many buyers return to be with family who may be getting older. “Family is an important consideration for South Africans and we have seen a marked increase in multigenerational living, with StatsSA data suggesting that more than 45% of households are double generational with parents and children living together.”

Offering more property for your buck, South Africa is better able to accommodate this kind of living than other countries where the buying power is far less.

While South Africa has its fair share of challenges, including load shedding, water shortages and socioeconomic inequality, it is still relatively stable compared with parts of Europe and the Middle East, for example, affected by conflict. Of course, lifestyle is a massive drawcard, says Bendall. South Africa has plenty to offer – beaches, mountains, winelands, outdoor activities and natural beauty.

“Luxury lifestyle estates that offer security and a host of recreational activities are particularly sought after by returning buyers who can pay premium prices.”

Angela was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful from the beginning. She always communicated herself well to us and kept us informed of the whole process and any details that came up along the way. She worked around our schedules even accommodating late at night because of shift work. During the overall process we felt very well taken care of, as if Angela took a personal interest in our welfare. Everything went smoothly and efficiently under her watch. We greatly appreciate her professionalism.

Testimonials:

My husband and I were first time home buyers and were unfamiliar with the crazy process. Lynette helped us every step of the way, making sure it was as stress free as possible. She is knowledgable and overall fun to work with. She will help you find the right home for you! Lindsay V

Lynette was professional and kind throughout the sale of the family house. My father had passed away 6 months earlier, so emotions were high and my judgement was a bit stressed. Lynette took the time to explain everything and presented me with clear options. In a moment of rushing around, I locked the only keys to the house inside while I was outdoors cleaning up, in 20 minutes Lynette showed up to let me in. I was happy to work with Lynette, and highly recommend her. If the situation arises, I would use her services again. Louis V.

Lynette did a great job of marketing and selling our home. She kept us updated through the entire process. She made great suggestions for staging. We would chose to work with Lynette again. Ellen H.

Lynette did a great job in helping me purchase and close on my new home here in Tucson. She made sure all the surrounding contractors (title company, lender, inspectors, appraiser) and I compleated our tasks within the contract guidelines. Everything went smoothly thanks to her. I would use her services again. Linda M.

Homeownership is how many Americans accumulate wealth, and it’s an important life goal for millions. But affording a home is a growing challenge — if not out of reach entirely — for many people.

In the past three years, mortgage rates have more than doubled and are now at nearly 7 percent on a typical 30-year loan. And they are unlikely to drop significantly this year . Even those who can swing an all-cash purchase, experts say, still have plenty of other expenses to consider, including maintenance and insurance.

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

A singular train track, with one short train, cuts through a lush deep forest.

By Elisabeth Malkin

Elisabeth Malkin has been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula for three decades.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Route of Mexico’s Maya Train

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.

The Best Anime That Will Make You Cry

Some anime really know how to tug at your heartstrings. These are the best anime out there that will make you cry like a baby.

The anime industry is just as diverse as any other media medium. From terrifying horror to comedy that will make someone's sides hurt, this variety is what makes the medium so easy to get into. That said, some of the greatest anime of all time are melancholic dramas and tragedies that excel at making their audience full of tears.

From school-time tales like Clannad based on visual novels to more societal critiques, anime can often make viewers feel in a completely different way. In the end, however, despite the grand size of the genre, some tearjerker anime excel at making fans cry far better than others.

Updated on April 15, 2024 by Mark Sammut: The Spring 2024 season is underway, and so far the lineup does not seem to include a good deal of sad anime. That can change as the weeks pass, but if someone is specifically craving a good cry, they might want to turn to the past.

Battle Shonen Anime

Rare but unforgettable.

Battle shonen properties like One Piece , Naruto , Dragon Ball , Full Metal Alchemist , and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure contain some of the most iconic and devastating "sad" moments in anime; however, potentially dozens, if not hundreds of episodes could separate these scenes. If someone is specifically searching for an anime that will make them cry loud and frequently, these shows are not for them. Conversely, if someone's desired poison is a long-running action-adventure series that might periodically cause them to weep uncontrollably, battle shonen anime should not disappoint.

Naruto: Characters With The Saddest Backstories

One Piece is especially great at nailing its emotional moments , and the anime does not exclusively rely on deaths to inspire tears. Full Metal Alchemist also does not pull any punches when aiming for the audience's hearts.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Psychological trauma.

Madoka Magica 's popularity is a double-edged sword since, nowadays, most newcomers will go into the anime already knowing its fantastic twist. While overexposure has lessened the impact of a key early moment, it should not take anything away from the rest of the experience. The magical girl anime borders on psychological horror, testing its young characters' vulnerable and fragile mental states as they are put into situations that nobody should ever be forced to face.

Madoka Magic a has its share of horrific and gory moments that will stick with someone long after they finish the series and movie sequel. That said, the anime achieves peak sadness not through bloody deaths but by emphasizing the girls' hopelessness. These characters are broken.

To Your Eternity

Dealing with loss.

Immortality comes at a steep price. Directed by a mysterious observer, a magical orb capable of changing shapes is sent to Earth, and it eventually finds itself taking the form of a wolf and then a boy. Along with sharing an emotional bond, the orb (called Fushi) can only assume somebody's form if that person is deceased. Consequently, death is an intrinsic part of To Your Eternity 's premise, and the anime shows how Fushi's personality and journey are shaped by his relationships.

12 Anime Series To Watch If You Like To Your Eternity

Death goes hand-in-hand with life, but someone can live on through the people they leave behind. To Your Eternity encompasses every possible emotion, be it unbridled happiness or crushing sadness. The latter comes frequently, and each moment can inspire tears.

5 Centimeters Per Second

A lifetime of longing, 5 centimeters per second.

One regret can haunt someone's entire existence. Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara met when they were kids, forming an instant bond. They seemed destined for each other, but life eventually got in the way, breaking them apart forever. 5 Centimeters per Second chronicles their short but sweet time together, along with their attempts to move on once they are forced to go their separate ways.

5 Centimeters per Second was directed by Makoto Shinkai, a filmmaker who loves to make audiences cry. Split into three episodes, the story gets progressively more heartbreaking and complex. The anime not only shows intensely sad moments but also explores the depression that can set in after these life-changing events.

Your Lie In April

March to the inevitable, your lie in april.

Few anime are as infamous for their sad endings as Your Lie In April . Focused on the story of Kosei Arima, a well-accomplished pianist, and musician, the story takes an interesting turn as the audience is introduced to the free-spirited Kaori Miyazono.

The two get along well during the show's runtime, eventually concluding nicely with a romantic plot. However, the story quickly grows more and more dramatic as the audience becomes introduced to illness and the strife it causes each of the characters. Overall, there's a lot to appreciate about this series, especially for people who love well-developed characters.

Violet Evergarden

Personal tragedies.

There is no bigger tragedy than war, something that the popular anime Violet Evergarden really hits home. The story surrounds the ex-soldier Violet Evergarden, the namesake character of the series, as she reintegrates after the end of a recent war.

15 Best Anime That Defy Their Usual Genre Tropes

Taking up the career of a ghostwriter who writes for people who cannot write for themselves, the anime jumps into a deep exploration of each character's emotions, especially the protagonist herself . In the end, Violet Evergarden is a good pick for anime fans who like historical dramas and suspenseful action.

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Haunted by the past.

Anohana is a recurring pick among sad anime for its unique premise. The story focuses on the story of a group of childhood friends who have slowly drifted apart in different directions. The issue? The group was divided after an accident that killed one of their friends, named Meiko.

This accident affects the group, especially the now-reclusive main character Jinta when Meiko's ghost suddenly appears to bring them back together. All in all, Anohana is a great series for audiences who love a story that's both fulfilling and sad at the same time.

Haibane Renmei

The beauty & sorrow of (after)life.

Many prominent fantasy series have become the icons of the sadder side of the anime industry. However, one fantasy series that flies under the radar has the potential to be one of the most heart-wrenching of them all — Haibane Renmei .

The premise of Haibane Renmei follows the story of Rakka, a haibane (a creature resembling an angel), and the mysterious-walled city of Glie. However, as mysterious as the circumstances are, the plot only becomes more suspenseful as viewers learn more about Glie and its inhabitants. As engaging as the central mystery is, Haibane Renmei 's depth comes from its characterization of Rakka as the story chronicles her life and growth, which includes experiencing inescapable events like death.

Rumbling Hearts

Love & heartbreak.

Based on a visual novel, Rumbling Hearts is about romance and the conflicting emotions and heartbreak that can be born out of these relationships. Takayuki and Haruka are high-school sweethearts, and while their budding relationship is not perfect, they seem right for each other. However, an accident shatters their future, and things get complicated from there.

Rumbling Hearts has a strong roster of main characters who are all complex and grounded in reality. While none of them are necessarily presented as villains, the anime does not go out of its way to make its characters overly likable. They are flawed humans who are prone to bouts of selfishness, anger, and hostility.

Wolf Children

The love between a parent & their children.

Anime movies hold a special place in the hearts of anime and manga fans for their heartwarming moments that can't quite be reached in a normal anime series. The length of the film, plus the need to watch in one sitting, allows the movie to immerse the viewer more effectively — the film Wolf Children proves this much as it shows viewers the daily life of a family of wolf people. After meeting a werewolf in college, the main character Hana has two half-wolf children; Wolf Children focuses on the life of this unique family.

All in all, Wolf Children makes for a good pick for anime fans who are looking for a sadder fantasy-style movie outside the standard Studio Ghibli style of animation. The film focuses more on the relationship between mother and child than an action-filled plot .

Tearing Down The Walls

Toradora (2008).

One of the most influential romance anime of all time, Toradora! spawned an avalanche of copycats that repeated its tropes and ideas, causing the series to seem a bit generic in this day and age. However, the 2008 anime was a trendsetter upon its release, and it is still a better watch than many of its spiritual successors. At school, Ryuji and Taiga are the definition of "don't judge a book by its cover" in the exact opposite ways. While the guy looks like a delinquent but does not have a rough bone in his body, the diminutive girl is prone to violent outbursts that could make the Looney Tunes blush. In order to pursue their romantic interests, they decide to form an alliance, although they are hardly on the same page most of the time.

Toradora! does not regularly aim to initiate waterworks, and the show frequently focuses on comedy or romantic tension. That said, when the story tries to be sad, it never fails. Taiga is responsible for most of the heartbreaking moments in the series, and these scenes are especially effective since they force her to let down her protective walls. Minori is also a tragic character.

Kotaro Lives Alone

The trauma behind the humor.

Kotaro Lives Alone does not immediately reveal itself to be a tearjerker, but the anime quietly and steadily starts to pluck at the viewer's heartstrings. As implied by its title, the story follows Kotaro, a 4-year-old kid who moves into his own apartment. Unsurprisingly, the young child's situation garners the attention of his neighbors, who quickly become unwanted but appreciated parental figures to Kotaro.

Kotaro Lives Alone: The Psychology Behind Childhood Trauma

This premise is perfect for a lighthearted and fantastical slice of life about an unusual family dynamic, and while Kotaro Lives Alone occasionally fits that description, it does not reflect the entire package. The anime dives into Kotaro's backstory, revealing the dire circumstances that caused this 4-year-old to mature beyond his age. Even the show's sillier moments are underpinned by a hint of sadness.

Now And Then, Here And There

Isekai'd to hell, now and then, here and there.

Isekai has produced a couple of drama-heavy anime, but pure tearjerkers are in short supply. Re: Zero - Starting Life In Another World could qualify, although it is more upsetting than outright sad. If forced to select the most heartbreaking isekai anime, Now and Then, Here and There would have to get the nod. Putting the whole "sent to another world" angle to the side, this anime is a gritty war story that focuses on innocent children who get caught in the middle.

In an attempt to save a girl named Lala-Ru, Shu finds himself stuck in a strange and horrifying world that has no sympathy for the vulnerable. Now and Then, Here and There goes to some shockingly dark places, touching upon themes that very few anime are willing to approach. While not an enjoyable watch, this 1999 anime is powerful and unforgettable.

Ef – A Tale Of Memories & A Tale Of Melodies

Melodrama done well, ef: a tale of memories.

An adaptation of the Ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two visual novel, Shaft's anime seasons revolve around two romances each. While the two series have overlapping characters, A Tale of Melodies shifts focus to figures who play largely minor roles in A Tale of Memories . As such, they are fairly standalone experiences, although people should still start with the first season.

Ef is unapologetically melodramatic, to the point that its characters tend to really wear their emotions out in the open. Although this can get tiring, the anime makes up for it with generally good writing, likable characters, and a willingness to tackle serious issues. Both seasons are worth watching, but A Tale of Melodies is the stronger of the two; that said, they are both capable of producing tears.

March Comes In Like A Lion

Depression & bullying, march comes in like a lion.

Along with having one of the most baffling titles in anime history, March Comes In Like a Lion is generally viewed as an all-time great drama, particularly for its second season. Even since losing his parents as a child, Rei has health and depression by putting all his energy into shogi. While providing a small escape and helping to pave a path for a promising future, shogi has done little to dispel Rei's loneliness; however, this begins to change when he befriends three sisters who are also trying to make the best of a bad situation.

March Comes In Like a Lion touches upon difficult themes like depression, trauma, psychological abuse, and bullying. More importantly, the show handles them with care and nuance, offering no easy answers while still suggesting that things can get better. This anime will inspire a rollercoaster of emotions.

Terror In Resonance

Social commentary, terror in resonance.

Terrorism has become one of the most prevalent tragedies of the last few decades. Released back in 2014, Terror in Resonance explores the tragic undertones of a monumental issue in modern history with striking imagery and plot mechanics.

That said, be aware that viewers may find the imagery in the anime hard to swallow, between being a psychological thriller and a critique on a very controversial topic. Nonetheless, the adventures of Nine and Twelve will certainly leave an impression on anybody who watches until the end.

Made In Abyss

Physical, psychological, & emotional destruction, made in abyss.

Made in Abyss follows a girl and her robotic friend as they venture down into the Abyss, a fantastical place filled with extraordinary creatures, beautiful vistas, and despair. As they head down deeper and deeper, things get progressively worse, and this fantasy show is willing to torture its characters regardless of their age or innocence.

Made In Abyss: 4 Things You Might Not Know About The Blessing Of The Abyss

Kinema Citrus' anime is not an easy sit. While not consistently sad, Made in Abyss has very few moments of proper happiness. Every triumph is built on pain, loss, and tragedy; every character is either suffering or in the process of inflicting misery on someone else. In terms of dark adventure anime, Made in Abyss is basically in a league of its own, even if it is difficult to unabashedly recommend due to its more disconcerting sequences.

Fruits Basket (2019)

Healing requires time & a support system.

Fruits Basket covers basically the entire emotional spectrum, and it handles everything with style and finesse. Consequently, the anime does not always or even regularly aim to be sad, but when it does, heartbreak will follow. Following the death of her mother, Tohru Honda finds herself homeless and isolated; however, when her situation becomes known to the Sohma family, they invite her to live with them. Now living alongside her school's male idol along with his short-tempered cousin, Tohru's days are destined to be filled with laughter, surprises, warmth, and tragedy.

Initially, Fruits Basket leans heavily into comedy while it quietly builds up its main players. In due time, the anime begins to explore the characters' backstories, most of which are defined by trauma. By its third and final season, the show has transitioned into a full-blown drama, and it is all the better for it.

Angel Beats

Life after death, angel beats.

Key visual novels have become known for their heart-wrenching storylines ( and romantic subplots ), as well as their excellent visuals. Angel Beats, the anime released in 2010, has a legacy for many as being one of the most compelling of these. Taking viewers to a school-time afterlife, the story revolves around Otonashi Yuzuru and a band of renegade teenagers fighting against passing on.

Nonetheless, as the story goes on, viewers face the cruel reality of this afterlife. For new anime fans , this is an amazing starting point for the more melancholic side of the medium. The comedy and setting bring a more light-hearted tone, counterbalanced by incredible visuals, music, and twists that hit right to the heart.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War In The Pocket

Coming of age during war time, mobile suit gundam 0080: war in the pocket.

Gundam is no stranger to tragedy; in fact, most of the franchise's releases contain a few painful moments. In terms of more accessible entries, both The Witch from Mercury and Iron-Blooded Orphans are tearjerkers in their own right, particularly the latter; however, the most heartbreaking Gundam project is 1989's War in the Pocket . The OVA series might not be as well known as most other properties in Sunrise's franchise, but its short-run nature and personal story make it a surprisingly good pick for a standalone experience, especially since it does not reflect the typical Gundam blueprint.

Set in a neutral colony that has tried to stay out of the war between the Federation and Zeon, the anime focuses on a young child who is fascinated by war and forms a friendship with two soldiers from opposite sides. Rather than action or political intrigue, War in the Pocket tells a very human story that doubles as a dark coming-of-age journey.

I Want To Eat Your Pancreas

A doomed but worthwhile relationship.

Some series are built to hit the viewer right in the feels. I Want To Eat Your Pancreas (contrary to what the title alludes to) builds a world that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking to its very core. The story focuses on the story of a girl, named Sakura, who suffers from a rare, fatal pancreatic illness.

The Greatest Romance Anime Of All Time (April 2024)

As viewers follow the show's protagonist Haruki, they will grow attached to the relationship between the doomed duo. Of course, due to the show's excellent artwork and characters, the viewers experience a unique type of feeling by the end of the story.

Clannad & Clannad: After Story

The definitive tearjerker anime.

Among the many anime tearjerkers , Clannad has become something of a classic. For old-timers, the series offers a nostalgic feeling. For newcomers, it offers a dramatic series with world-shattering undertones. Focused on the story of Tomoya Okazaki, Clannad follows the high-schooler as he explores his skewed view of happiness and reality.

Based on the Key visual novel of the same name , the anime tells a tragic story centered around each heroine. While one subplot is more prevalent than the others, the conclusion found in its sequel, Clannad: After Story, will not be forgotten.

Everybody loves a good mystery, anime or not. Able to build suspense and hide tragic events, the audience often comes to unexpected conclusions; this is most definitely the case for the 2016 series, Orange.

18 Best Fantasy Manga & Manhwa That Do Not Have An Anime

The protagonist, Naho Takamiya, receives a letter from her future self. However, the letter tells of a tragedy involving her classmate, Kakeru Naruse. Now, Naho must find the true meaning of the letters or face their tragic predictions. The series dwells upon the themes of regret and other saddening themes, perfect for the viewer who enjoys a subtly melancholic story.

A Silent Voice

Anime films (many of which are available on Netflix ) have the potential to be even more saddening than their episodic counterparts. The movie A Silent Voice is a perfect example of this, hitting audiences with its alluring, down-to-life plotline. Telling the story of Shoya Ishida and his deaf classmate, Shoko Nishimiya.

The plot proceeds to create a dialogue on the issues of bullying and depression. Of course, not all sad anime are tragic; viewers will find the end of A Silent Voice fulfilling, though still a little depressing nonetheless. A perfect choice for audiences looking for the best of both worlds.

Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms

A unique mother & son dynamic, maquia: when the promised flower blooms.

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms is an ambitious movie that works as a war epic and an intimate family drama. Maquia comes from a race known as the Iorph who outlive humans by hundreds of years; consequently, they generally stay far away from each other. However, when war breaks out, Maquia escapes and winds up acting as the guardian of a human baby. As the child ages beyond his mother, tension begins to rise between the two.

Maquia handles its core relationship with grace and nuance, crafting a dynamic that is disarmingly real despite the movie's fantastical setting. The anime's emotional beats hit like a brick because, ultimately, most people can relate to the story's themes of grief and loss.

Plastic Memories

Human & ai.

The evolution of robotics is a common trope in both sci-fi movies and anime alike. However, only a few series touch on the sadder parts of this topic. That said, Plastic Memories does focus on these critical issues, as audiences follow the journey of Tsukasa Mizugaki and the android Isla.

The anime tells a wistful tale of the impermanence of human and android life, and the feelings associated with AI. The overarching associations between characters and questions of romance in a short lifetime make this story incredibly compelling. A must-watch for any sci-fi anime lover looking for something a little bit different.

A Place Further Than The Universe

The long road to closure, a place further than the universe.

A Place Further Than The Universe might not seem like an obvious tearjerker anime , especially since it has a generally optimistic tone and plenty of humor. However, the premise has the potential for heavy moments, and the show largely follows through on them. Shirase has been saving money to go on a trip to Antarctica, the last place her mother was seen before she went missing. Naturally, a teenager is not meant to go on this type of journey, but Shirase's drive manages to convince a few of her classmates to also join in, resulting in them making the trip.

5 Best Shonen Romance Manga With No Anime

A Place Further Than The Universe almost slips into "cute girls doing cute things" territory at times, especially during the first half of the series; however, the anime eventually transitions into a drama as the trip commences. All four main characters are delightful and have their reasons for completing this journey, and their blossoming bonds serve as the story's beating heart. Despite being hopeful of what she might find, Shirase is ultimately seeking closure, and when that arrives, tears will follow.

WorldEnd: What Do You Do At The End Of The World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us?

A fleeting heartbeat.

WorldEnd , aka SukaSuka , immediately lets the audience know they should not expect a happy ending, and the anime delivers in that regard. Set hundreds of years in the future, humanity has been wiped out, leaving behind a new race of people who live in constant fear of an alien threat known as Beasts. The only human still standing, Willem, is assigned to take care of weapons that are used to fight the Beasts. The catch is that these weapons are in fact young girls, and their future is incredibly bleak.

SukaSuka chronicles Willem's attempts to connect with these girls, fostering friendships that help bring some joy into all of their short lives. He also builds a more intimate relationship with Chtholly, a veteran fighter. WorldEnd has quite a few pacing issues, but the anime does not hold back when it comes to gut punches.

Grave Of The Fireflies

Depression in animated form, grave of the fireflies.

Sometimes, older films offer even more of a worthwhile plot than modern classics. At least, the Studio Ghibli film, Grave of the Fireflies , certainly does. Released in 1988, the story follows the wartime stories of Seita and his sister Setsuko.

The civilian side of 1945 Japan often goes unnoticed in modern history, so this film offers a very telling retelling (based on the autobiography of the same name). Although the film has some very dark tones (at least compared to other Ghibli films) , the plot and well-developed characters make for an unforgettable and emotionally exhausting experience. While it might be difficult to rewatch, Grave of the Fireflies is undoubtedly one of the saddest anime of all time; in fact, it is one of the saddest movies ever.

Ryokou Omakase aims to take diners on a journey across Japan

the best journey takes you home

New restaurant from the Omakase Table team to focus on small plates rather than nigiri

the best journey takes you home

Located less than a five-minute drive from Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a mixed-use development called Abrams Fixtures promises lofts, offices, and of course, restaurants. One of the first eateries to be announced is Ryokou Omakase, slated to open this summer. Ryokou means journey or trip in Japanese, and that is exactly what chef Paul Gutting wants diners to do when they visit. Currently a chef at Leonard Yu’s Omakase Table , Gutting will lead this sister spot, serving a 10-12-course tasting concentrated on Japanese small plates. (At Omakase Table, the 20 courses primarily highlight nigiri.)

“This will be a smaller, more curated menu,” Gutting says. “I’m visiting each region to find [items] that go with dishes we want to make.”

For example, Hokkaido is known for its seafood, so Ryokou may serve a lobster consommé with uni to represent the region. Gutting is considering a kaiseki course with pickled vegetables to symbolize Kyoto. Expect a multi-course traditional Wagashi dessert that uses ingredients from all over Japan—a culmination of the journey. The menu will change seasonally. The Aomori prefecture is known for its apples, which harvest in the fall, so Gutting says he may incorporate them into a dish at that time.

“Omakase means chef’s choice or recommendation. In Japan, you can get that in almost any restaurant. In America it usually means a sushi-focused, coursed menu,” Gutting explains. “There are a lot of Japanese fish people don’t know about. Places like Mujo have worked to bring a lot of the distributors [to Atlanta] so we can more easily get the ingredients we need to make really high quality omakase.”

At 11 seats, Ryokou will be smaller than Omakase Table. Diners will eat at the bar, and reservations will be required. The space will be modern with Hinoki wood and a green onyx bar top. There will be a handful of wines and select Japanese-inspired cocktails. Sake will be the center of the beverage program, with pairings available for every course.

“I hope people look forward to the journey,” Gutting says. “I want Ryokou to be its own standalone restaurant, not an extension of Omakase Table.”

Omakase Table opened on the Westside in 2022. A new location in Buckhead is in the works, designed to give each of the two chefs their own separate room and sushi counter. A third room may offer small plates. According to Gutting, the Westside location could be turned into a more accessible omakase restaurant.

I found the Goldilocks of portable power stations, and I take it on all my adventures

adrian-kingsley-hughes

EcoFlow River 2 Max.

I love power stations. They're the off-grid adventurer's answer to the power bank. They're a huge box of batteries that can be used to charge USB devices and run gadgets that need AC power.

But power stations can be big, weighty things. That's fine if you have a vehicle to haul your gear to your destination, but if you're going on foot, most power stations are just too heavy to lug about.

Also: The best portable power stations you can buy: Expert tested

And most of those that are small enough to carry are too small to be useful.

The EcoFlow River 2 Max sits in the middle -- compact enough to be portable, big enough to be practical.

EcoFlow River 2 Max tech specs

  • Capacity : 512Wh
  • Net Weight : 13.4lbs
  • Dimensions : 10.6 x 10.2 x 7.7 inches
  • Cell Chemistry : LFP (lithium iron phosphate)
  • Cycle Life : 80%+ capacity after 3,000 cycles
  • AC Input : 100-120V, 50Hz/60Hz, 660W Max
  • Solar Input : 11-50V, 13A, 220W Max
  • Car Input : 12V/24V, 8A, 100W Max
  • USB-C Input/Output : 5/9/12/15/20V, 5A, 100W Max
  • AC Output : 120V, 50Hz/60Hz, 500W (Surge 1000W)
  • DC Output : 12.6V, 10A/3A/3A, 126W Max
  • USB-A Output : 5V, 2.4A, 12W Max
  • DC5521 Output : 12.6V, 3A, 36W Max
  • App Control : Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Discharge Temperature : 14°F to 113°F/-10°C to 45°C
  • Charge Temperature : 32°F to 113°F/0°C to 45°C
  • Optimal Operating Temperature : 68°F to 86°F/20°C to 30°C
  • Storage Temperature : 14°F to 113°F (68°F to 86°F is best)/-10°C to 45°C (20°C to 30°C is best)

Note that the version I'm testing is the variant aimed at the UK market, so it has different AC outlets and power inputs/outputs, but beyond that the unit is the same as the US variant.

Also:  This $25 'solar cockroach' DIY kit is fun for the whole family

I've previously tested the River 2 Max's smaller sibling, the River 2 , which weighs in at 7.7 pounds, has a power capacity of 256Wh, and capable of a sustained AC output of 300W (600W max). That smaller power station is perfect for times when you want to take power outdoors, but you don't need too much of it.

The handle is comfortable, even for extended periods of carrying the power station.

The River 2 Max takes things to the next level. The capacity is doubled to 512Wh, the weight bumped up to 13.4 pounds, and it is capable of a sustained AC output of 500W (1,000W max). While 13.4 pounds is hefty, it's some 22% lighter than the previous generation EcoFlow units of comparable specs.

All the ports you need -- USB-A and USB-C, AC, and DC.

You can recharge the River 2 Max using one of four methods -- AC, solar, 12V in-car, and USB-C. If you choose AC, the unit can go from zero to 100% in an hour, which means you can leave charging to the last minute.

Also: I tested the world's smallest power station, and it's a solar-charging beast

If you want to go totally off-grid, EcoFlow offers a 160W solar panel that can recharge the River 2 Max in about four hours. The panel is durable and waterproof to IP68, so it's the perfect adventure companion for the River 2 Max.

EcoFlow River 2 Max with 160W solar panel.

The solar panel adds weight and bulk, but it transforms the River 2 Max into a totally off-grid solution.

Also:  Why you need a batteryless jump starter (and how it works)

And it works really well. I've tested this in the UK in May and could get 125W out of the panel with it placed flat on a roof and a hazy sun, which is excellent performance.

Getting 124W of free electricity from that solar panel.

You might be worried that all the charging and discharging is going to wear out the River 2 Max, but you shouldn't be.

If you were to completely charge and discharge the River 2 Max six times a week, EcoFlow claims the lithium iron phosphate batteries would last for 9.6 years before their capacity drops to 80%.

Also: I found a Qi2 charging station that can do it all (and Apple users will love it)

A built-in fan kicks in and keeps the batteries cool when charging and discharging at high wattages. The fan generates a maximum of 62db of noise, which is the sort of sound level you'd get from a household dishwasher. I've had this power station running next to my head and I didn't find the noise all that noticeable.

If you don't want to spend your time jabbing buttons then the River 2 Max can be controlled remotely using the EcoFlow App . Keep an eye on charging levels, tweak settings, and adjust charging speeds, all from your iPhone or Android smartphone.

Inputs on the back of the unit for AC power and solar.

The River 2 Max can also be used as a backup device for when the  power goes out . It can detect the mains power is down and switch over to the battery in 30ms, which means that connected devices will keep on running as though nothing has happened.

Also:  Turn off this default power setting now

Some context: a typical  Wi-Fi router  draws about 10W, which means this unit can keep the router going for about 16 hours.

The optional 160W solar panel turns this unit into a truly off-grid power station.

The unit is rugged and well built and shrugs off the knocks and bumps that it will inevitably get when being used.

Currently available for $499, the EcoFlow River 2 Max is competitively priced and is highly recommended for those looking for a truly portable power solution. I plan on taking this on more adventures real soon.
