adventure-travel-gear

The best trips are full of surprises, but gear fails shouldn’t be one of them. Guard against snafus by filling your duffel with equipment that’s versatile, packable, and durable enough to go the distance. These 12 products earned their place on our essentials list after travels across six continents and over thousands of miles by plane, train, bus, foot, and camel. What did we learn? The best travel companions are the ones that can keep up. No surprises there.

Cotopaxi Batac 16L

adventure travel cotopaxi

For a daypack that squishes down to fist size, the Batac offers a bevy of features that elevate it above a minimalist rucksack. A long zippered front pocket includes a phone/passport sleeve for when you’re hiking away from the crowds, and another zippered pocket in the main compartment holds sunglasses, snacks, and a compass, or a guidebook and maps. (Stash water bottles in two exterior stretch pockets.) The 210-denier nylon is tough; after eight months of use, the only sign of wear is a tiny hole caused by a cam after one tester overloaded it with climbing gear. The Batac is best under loads of 10 pounds or less, and its 2.5-inch-wide mesh shoulder straps are comfy and disperse sweat well. “I can stuff it with a toiletry kit, headphones, headlamp, puffy, and raincoat, and still have room for my insulated bottle and lunch,” says one tester who logged 10,000 miles of travel with the Batac this past summer.

$50; 11 oz.; one size

Hydrapak Stash 1L

adventure travel hydrapak

We didn’t know we needed this travel necessity until we used it. But turns out, a collapsible water bottle is just the ticket for long bus rides, light-load town tours, and backpacking trips. “When it’s empty, the bottle compresses down to about an inch high and the circumference of a coaster,” our tester says. “But it’s also tough. I’ve tossed it, fully-filled, onto rocks while backpacking in Colorado, with no ill effects. I’m not the only one who thinks it’s a new must-have. On flights, I’ve seen my neighbors eyeing it when I finish my drink, twist it up, and stash it into the seat pocket in front of me.”

$23; 3.3 oz.

Columbia Caldorado outdry EXtreme jacket

adventure travel columbia

At just 6 ounces, this waterproof jacket packs down to the size of a grapefruit, making it an easy-to-tote insurance policy. But don’t worry about taking it into rough terrain: “While bushwhacking in bad weather in Oregon’s Eagle Cap Wilderness, my partner’s jacket got torn up pretty bad. The Columbia Caldorado ’s 15-denier ripstop nylon came through without a scratch,” one tester says. Breathability is ample for an ultralight shell: “Generally I hate wearing a shell when biking hard, but I didn’t overheat in this jacket on a rainy day in the hills outside Salta, Argentina,” another tester reports. Two underarm vents help dump heat. Note: The Caldorado has one chest pocket. If you want two larger ones, opt for its cousin, the OutDry Ex Featherweight Shell (same price, pictured).

$199; 6 oz. (m’s M); m’s S-XXL, w’s XS-XL

Canon Powershot g9 x mark ii

adventure travel canon

Travelers who want more than phone-caliber photos but aren’t camera buffs—or just don’t want to lug a big one around— will appreciate the Mark II’s balance between size and quality . Although only the width of a deck of cards and 1.2 inches thick (it easily fits into a pocket), it boasts a 1-inch, 20.1-megapixel sensor. (For comparison, the iPhone 8 Plus shoots 12 megapixels.) “It’s great for capturing mountain vistas yet focuses surprisingly well on closeups, and I don’t have to carry a bulky case,” our tester says. The Mark II is intuitive for even the most tech-challenged travelers due to a touch LCD screen that allows users to easily review images and navigate between modes. For those with a little more experience, it can shoot in RAW and full manual modes.

$530; 7.3 oz. (with battery and memory card)

Patagonia Stretch Wavefarer Board Shorts

adventure travel patagonia

These versatile board shorts are good for much more than an impromptu dip. Quick-drying nylon-spandex with a DWR coating and a self-draining hip pocket make them fine swim trunks, but the Wavefarers’ fabric was tough enough to shrug off scuffs while climbing a chimney in City of Rocks, Idaho. Our testers also deemed it soft enough for chafe-free hiking and sleeping. A women’s version with a 4-inch inseam is also available.

$69 (w’s $55); 7 oz. (m’s M); m’s 28-40, w’s 0-14

Sanuk Donny / Donna

adventure travel sanuk

They won’t qualify you for business class, but these camp shoes are just nice enough to double as do-it-all travel kicks. The featherlight canvas slip-ons pack flat for easy stowing and are surprisingly comfortable. Our tester bought them on the fly in Disneyland when the log flume turned her sneakers into wet blister-makers. Her family vacation was saved, and in the six years since, she’s taken them on almost every backcountry overnight she’s been on, from the French Alps to the Grand Canyon. They don’t have a midsole, but the EVA footbed and spongy rubber outsole are plush enough to provide ample cushion and rebound. And the best part? They’re machine-washable.

Starting at $60 (w’s $50); 10.5 oz. (m’s 7); m’s 7-14, w’s 5-11

The North Face Stow-n-Go Bra

adventure travel the north face

It’s never a bad idea to take a few emergency Benjamins when you travel overseas. Hide your stash in this bra’s clever pocket, which sits between the girls and is big enough for a credit card and bills. The compression-style Stow-N-Go is claspless, and our tester praised its running-level support and yoga-level comfort. “Its front fabric isn’t just flat; the bra contours to my chest so I never feel constricted, whether bounding downhill or sleeping in it,” she said after hiking around Mont Blanc. The lightweight polyester material has mesh in the back for added venting, and dries quickly enough to be worn as a swim top.

$45; 2.4 oz.; XS-XL; A/B, C/D

Therm-a-Rest Self-Inflating Neck Pillow

adventure travel thermarest

Love a neck pillow for long-haul flights, but wary about bringing it on the trail? This offering from Therm-a-Rest is about as tough as a pillow gets; instead of an air-only bladder, it boasts a solid open-cell foam core. (After we punctured our sample on purpose, it remained comfy.) The removable, pillow case-like brushed polyester cover is soft and easy to wash, and although packed size is bulky (slightly smaller than a roll of toilet paper), our tester still gave it high marks. “There are lighter and smaller backpacking pillows, but I take this one because its U-shape fits perfectly in a sleeping bag’s hood,” she says. “I deflate it slightly, so it supports my head and I never wake up with a stiff neck.” One wish: a stuffsack.

$40; 6.4 oz.; one size

Osprey Transporter 130

adventure travel osprey

Some adventures start before you’re unpacked, so we always store our stuff in an armored duffle. The giant Transporter is our pick for its 840-denier, nylon-coated TPU on the inside and outside, which protects from scrapes. “My daughters packed it with two inflatable paddleboards for Catalina Island, and were tasked with moving the Transporter from the dock to camp—about 2 miles up the trail. In the name of testing, they dragged it the entire way, and there was no damage,” our tester says. For the rest of us, the Transporter has padded yoke-style shoulder straps with load haulers, which was the best-performing suspension system of any duffel we’ve used. It doesn’t have wheels, but as a result saves weight and is easier to stuff into crowded luggage compartments. A two-way zipper has great slide action, and includes holes for attaching a lock.

$180; 4 lbs. 2 oz.

Lululemon ABC Jogger

adventure travel gear lululemon

“These go-anywhere pants were all I needed on a do-everything trip to England,” our tester says. “They segued smoothly from London nights to days of cragging in the Lake District.” Made from a soft, four-way stretch polyester, the slim ABCs never hindered our testers when they were high-stepping over logs. The midweight fabric breathed well on humid hikes, and although there’s no DWR, its tight weave shook off light precip. Our tester also experienced no rips or abrasions over 30 days of climbing and hiking. The 2-inch-wide waistband lays flat under a hipbelt, and two slash hand pockets each have mesh mini-pockets (yes, a pocket within a pocket) to secure credit cards or cash. (Tuck your passport in the zippered back pocket.)

$118; 13.4 oz. (m’s L); m’s S-XXL

Popticals Popgun

Popticals

Worried about trashing your shades on the road? Rest easy with the PopGuns . The lenses are Zeiss nylon with a scratch-resistant coating. They withstood falling ice pellets and small rocks while climbing Mt. Hood in Oregon. “They’re pretty much indestructible,” one tester says. “I haven’t gotten any scratches, even when I accidentally scraped them on rock while climbing a narrow chimney on a trip along the California coast.” The PopGuns fold up at the nose bridge and temples, ultimately collapsing to the size of a small biscuit. They then slip into a hard case that’s exceptionally strong (one tester drove over it in his Subaru WRX and it emerged unscathed). The lenses come in both polarized and non-polarized versions. Ding: price.

Starting at $169; 1.3 oz. (glasses), 1.4 oz. (case)

12 Outdoor Brands Every Traveler Should Know About

Outdoor Brands Travelers Should Know About Eddie Bauer

A year into the pandemic, our collective thirst for the great outdoors is evident. Road trips , camping , and outdoor exploration have become increasingly common themes for travel during this unusual era. For anyone dipping their toes into outdoor adventure, here's one crucial piece of advice: gear is everything . Without the proper clothing, boots, backpacks , tents, and sleeping pads, you and your grand escape simply cannot thrive. (Though if you aren't ready to buy your own, you can always test gear out and rent first .)

If you’re considering a camping, hiking, or backpacking trip sometime soon, you'll want to ensure you've got a handle on the best outdoor brands to shop for gear from. There are the ubiquitous giants—Patagonia, Columbia, Marmot, The North Face—but if you're keen to add a few more to your roster, continue ahead for 12 lesser-known outfitters recommended by the people who know the space best: adventure photographers, explorers, professional surfers, and more.

NEMO Equipment

Best for: sleeping bags and tents.

Worthwhile inventions are often born out of necessity, as was the case with NEMO Equipment . After a “turbulent night on the side of Mount Washington” due to a poorly-designed bivy (a small, lightweight solo shelter used by mountaineers instead of a tent), founder Cam Brensinger created his first airbeam-supported tent. Fast forward 19 years and NEMO now offers a diverse collection of outdoor gear, much of which has picked up awards and recognition from the likes of Time , Popular Science , and even an elite group of Navy SEALs. Outdoors enthusiast and adventure photographer L. Renee Blount recommends NEMO for its quality, durability, and bright colors, and says her most trustworthy sleeping bag is from them.

Image may contain: Tent, Camping, Mountain Tent, and Leisure Activities

Light enough for backpacking but also a great pick for car camping , this bright and light tent offers two doors and vertical walls to make the tent feel more spacious inside.

Comfortable Adventures

Best for: womxn's clothing.

Jeein Shin noticed a deficit in comfortable apparel for the sport when she began outdoor climbing. Citing options that felt either too tight or too technical, she spent 18 months in research and development, then founded Comfortable Adventures . Writer, filmmaker, and nature photographer Johnie Gall swears by their pants. “They are stylish and made with thoughtful but not overtly technical details, like reinforced knees and a belt loop for your chalk bag,” Gall says. “I'm also a big proponent of choosing more regenerative, natural fibers—rip the seams out of these hemp pants and you could compost them.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Human, Person, Sandal, Pants, and Shoe

Shin’s star product is made from 55 percent hemp and 45 percent organic cotton and offers a silhouette that’s not tight like leggings nor overly stiff or technical—the Goldilocks of outdoor pants.

Best for: sleeping gear

An outdoor adventure can be swiftly spoiled by a poor night's rest; Klymit ’s focus is solely on preventing this from happening. “When it comes to backpacking, the best sleeping pad I’ve tried is made by Klymit,” Latinxhikers co-founder Luz Lituma says. “The Static Sleeping Air Pad is definitely side-sleeper friendly, takes way fewer breaths to fill, and is super affordable compared to other brands.”

Image may contain: Building, Architecture, Green, Fruit, Plant, Banana, and Food

At 18.7 ounces, this lightweight pad is a smart way to add much-needed comfort to your camping trip.

Image may contain: Furniture, Tent, and Hammock

Sleep under the stars in this stable hammock that features dual foot straps and wings and can accommodate up to 300 pounds.

Best for: backpacks, clothing

Davis Smith named his outdoor brand Cotopaxi after an active volcano in the Ecuadorian region of the Andes. His clothing and gear are favorites among outdoors enthusiasts, including Travis Welch, an alumni trips coordinator at NOLS, a global wilderness school . “These days, we want more out of our brands than simple good gear and Cotopaxi fits the bill,” Welch says. “They're not scared of using colors, have great corporate values, and fund grants related to international poverty relief .” The product Welch uses most is the Luzon 18L pack: “It's lightweight, compact, and durable, so I have it in my checked luggage all the time,” he says. “My Luzon has been on five continents with me.”

Image may contain: Bag, Shopping Bag, Sack, and Tote Bag

Each and every Del Día pack is one-of-a-kind, made from 100 percent repurposed fabric, and comes in its own unique colorway.

Best for: lightweight gear

Spend enough time adventuring outdoors and you'll learn how important lightweight gear is. Quinn Brett , an adventurer and multi-record breaking athlete, swears by Hyperlite 's backpacks and stuff sacks. “They're all incredibly lightweight and easily packable. They are not dry bags, in the traditional sense, but the roll-top stuff sacks keep stuff dry almost the same,” she explains. In October 2017, Brett fell over 100 feet while climbing on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park , leaving her currently paralyzed from the waist down. “I used [Hyperlite's sacks] solely when I was rock climbing and adventuring throughout the world and a variety of climates. Now, they are still my go-to on hand-cycle bike packing trips and backcountry hut trips.”

Image may contain: Backpack, and Bag

Great for backpacking and thru-hiking, this size backpack is best used for trips between one and four days.

Wintergreen Northern Wear

Best for: winter clothing.

Wintergreen Northern Wear has been operating on Ely, Minnesota's main street for over 30 years. “The gear is bulletproof,” Outward Bound Instructor Brian Minor says. “I have a beloved smoke-stained anorak that I've worn for hundreds of winter expedition days in the Boundary Waters.” His top pick for Nordic skiing as well as casual wear is the Hansen Merino Wool Hoodie . “It has a thick fabric with a simple look—no superfluous pockets or zippers.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Fleece, and Hat

Crafted from Polartec Wind Pro fleece, Wintergreen's classic beanie features an embroidered trim and tassel to finish.

Best for: cooking gear, portable lamps, and chargers

Energy poverty is at the core of BioLite 's mission. In 2008, the founders attended a conference that shed light on the jarring fact that “half the planet lives in energy poverty, lacking safe and reliable ways to cook, charge, and light their lives.” They refocused their strategy to cut fuel consumption and reduce toxic emissions. Photographer and digital creator Angela Liguori relies on BioLite’s 330 Headlamp for her outdoor adventures. “It's rechargeable and lasts for days, so you're able to use it on a multi-day backcountry trip,” she says. “It's the only headlamp I trust when I'm outside and the sun has set.”

Image may contain: Lighter

This kit comes with a portable grill, kettle pot, and coffee press and can even charge your devices.

Black Diamond Equipment

Best for: outdoor clothing, shoes, and accessories.

For Chris Burkard , an explorer, photographer, and author, “it's often the brands that focus on making the best product—not focusing on a specific sport—that truly shine through.” Black Diamond , the offshoot brand started by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, fits the bill. “It was created as a hard-goods company that has evolved [into] the leading outerwear brand for anyone wanting to be in the wild,” he says. “Their materials are space age and their designs are timeless. It doesn't matter if I am spending the day at the beach or at the crag, their gear goes with me.”

Image may contain: Stick, and Cane

Add stability to your hikes with a set of poles; these offer a three-section aluminum shaft.

Best for: backpacks, clothing, shoes

Navigating Goliath brands like Nike can be a challenge, particularly when you're looking for a product that will pull its own weight in the great outdoors. For Hike Clerb founder and executive director Evelynn Escobar-Thomas , Nike's outdoors-centric ACG (All Conditions Gear) line delivers on its promise. “I wear ACG when I'm hiking, camping, or just running around Los Angeles,” she says. “My current obsession is the Mountain Fly . They're my go-to hiking shoes and are perfect for wet and dry terrain.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pants, Khaki, Human, and Person

These 75 percent recycled polyester and nylon fiber pants are inspired by Oregon’s Smith Rock.

Best for: sustainable athleisure

For obvious reasons, sustainability is at the heart of most outdoor brands, including California-based prAna . Their commitment to the planet means prioritizing organic and recycled fabrics, an ethical supply chain, fair labor practices, and responsible packaging. For professional surfer Anna Ehrgott , it's a brand worth getting behind. “The one piece that I have no idea how I dressed myself before I owned is their Sancho Pant —I own three colors and wear them 90 percent of the time.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Shorts, and Apparel

A good pair of board shorts make it easier to stop for a quick dip on a road trip or summer surf trip.

Peak Design

Best for: bags, camera gear.

After a four month trip around the world, Peak Design founder Peter Dering came home, quit his full-time job, and created a device to make traveling with a professional camera easier. Ronald Vernon Edward Griswell , founder and CEO of HBCUs Outside , is a fan: “They make beautifully-crafted and innovative pieces that help keep my gear more accessible, organized, and protected,” he explains. “I use their Everyday 30L Backpack for excursions big and small.” Edward also notes the brand is Climate Neutral Certified and a signee of the Outdoor CEO Pledge, "working towards a more diverse and inclusive environment.”

Image may contain: Backpack, Bag, and Luggage

This sleek backpack is crafted from recycled post-consumer material and has a waterproof bottom liner. Griswell fits camera gear, snacks, extra clothes, sunglasses, laptop, and power banks inside.

Eddie Bauer

Best for: outdoor gear, family clothing, footwear.

Beginning with his small Seattle store opened in 1920 that sold and strung tennis rackets all the way to outfitting K2 and Everest ascents, Eddie Bauer has helped define the outdoor experience for over 100 years. Now, a new generation of travelers have taken to the legacy label, like photographer and adventurer Brooke Weeber . “I love how affordable and size inclusive their clothing is,” she says. “My most prized Eddie Bauer item is the Trail Tight . The fabric is thick enough to keep you warm on a cold winter trail but light enough for spring and summer nights.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, and Apparel

These hiking boots are waterproof and provide great traction thanks to their lug design using Vibram XS Trek rubber compound.

These Makita Outdoor Adventure Products Will Help Level-Up Your Next Camping Trip

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Makita is a well-known, highly professional power tool company that can go head-to-head with Dewalt, and it has been known to think outside the box. Makita has come out with some of the strangest tools that you can't help but want, like a heated jacket and even a bicycle. But to align more with outdoor enthusiasts, Makita also came out with its Outdoor Adventure line.

There's a vast array of products within the line that are great for camping trips, such as the Makita coffee maker and even an AC cooler and warmer in one. Each of these products is a part of the cordless series that operates off of Makita's 18V battery — though a few do require more power with the use of two 18V batteries. Based on reviews from customers who have used the products, below are four tools from Makita's Outdoor Adventure line that can help make your next camping trip better. A more in-depth explanation of this methodology can be found at the end of this article.

Outdoor Adventure 18V LXT Blower Kit

When going camping, you'll often find leaves and other debris on or near your campsite that you'll want to remove before setting up your tent and other camping essentials. Instead of racking it up or moving everything by hand, you can use Makita's Outdoor Adventure Blower Kit . Prices for this kit, which comes with the battery and battery charger, vary depending on where you are buying it from. At Tool Up , the cost is around $309, and at Amazon , it is currently $265 for Christmas.

The blower has a three-speed motor that can produce up to 219 MPH of blowing force. However, it can last up to 21 minutes of continuous use on low. It also comes with an approximately 21-inch long nozzle that is completely removable for easier travel. Best of all, it is incredibly lightweight compared to many other blowers. According to one Amazon customer review, his wife loves this Makita blower because it is easy to use and light, weighing only 4.1 pounds with the battery attached.

Outdoor Adventure 18V LXT Bluetooth Radio And LED Lantern

Packing must-have gadgets for a camping trip can be a nuisance, but having two-in-one products can help with that. Makita's Outdoor Adventure Bluetooth Radio and LED Lantern is one of those products. On Amazon , along with several other retailers, the price for this light source runs between $150-$160. It is a 360-degree lantern that runs two brightness settings, 130 and 310 lumens, which is plenty when navigating a campsite. Additionally, there are three different color modes to use depending on what kind of lighting you favor: daylight, neutral, and warm.

Along with being a light, this lantern is a Bluetooth speaker so you can bring your tunes into the woods. However, if your phone's battery is running low, a USB port is installed on the back of the lantern that can be used as a power station to charge your phone. With up to 16 hours of light mode or up to 44 hours of radio mode, this lantern will keep you lit and entertained.

Outdoor Adventure 18V LXT Cordless Power Source

Power is always important when camping, whether for something as big as a portable fridge or simply powering your rechargeable flashlights. Makita's made the Outdoor Adventure Cordless Power Source , and though it's not strong enough to keep your food cold, it can keep other portable devices charged throughout the trip. This device is one of the cheaper options in Makita's Outdoor Adventure line as well, costing just $35 on Amazon .

It works by attaching it to one of Makita's 18V batteries, and then you can plug your charging cables into one of the 2.1A output USB ports. There are even rubber covers for the ports, so when you are not using them, just cover them up so no outdoor debris or bugs can get inside. Additionally, you can use the on and off switch below the built-in belt clip when not in use. This Makita product has been around since 2016 before being integrated into the Outdoor Adventure series, and customer reviews have stayed high since then.

Outdoor Adventure 36V (18 X2) LXT Hot Water Kettle

Whether making instant noodles or a cup of tea, a pot of boiling water can give you many things while camping. The Makita Outdoor Adventure Hot Water Kettle , which costs $212 on Amazon , can do just that. All you have to do is pour no more than 27 ounces of water into the kettle and press the on button to get it going. The kettle takes about nine minutes to fully boil the water if the initial temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit. So, it's not as quick as boiling water over a fire, but it is less work for you.

Additionally, the Makita kettle requires the use of two 18V batteries, which is a lot of power. The biggest concern here is to ensure you have enough power to keep your batteries charged for more use, but conveniently, the kettle automatically shuts off when the boiling temperature has been reached. If you're looking for other ways to use the kettle, Sydney Tools TV on YouTube was able to cook hotdogs in it, so there are several options.

Why These Products Were Selected

The Makita Adventure items featured in this article were chosen based on high reviews from consumers. These reviews came from outdoorsmen who have tested the products during their camping trips or simply through everyday use. According to the reviews, these selected products will help enhance your camping trip without taking away from the allure of the experience. Each item is readily available on the product information page on Makita's website through the Buy Now option or on Amazon.

Rock Climbing I - Learn to Climb!

  • Activity Overview

Rock Climber at Pinnacle National Park

Never tried climbing before? Curious? Perhaps you’ve climbed a few times in a gym and want to try the real thing? Discover what outdoor rock climbing is all about in this 4-hour clinic designed for the beginning rock climber. No climbing experience is necessary. In our Climbing 1 class, getting you up your first rock climbs is the goal. Additionally, we’ll share the sense of adventure that drives our guides’ passion for the sport, and provide you with the most enjoyable first day of climbing possible. We’ll begin with an introduction to climbing gear, climbing commands, and climber tie-in knots. Then we’ll spend the remainder of our time climbing!

*Climbing I Cost: $115 *w/ Express Pass : $105

This class is a great opportunity to get exposure to outdoor climbing in a safe, supportive, fun and nurturing environment. We’ll take care of setting up the ropes and providing a safe, supportive environment for the beginning rock climber. You get to explore what it’s all about! The combination of Climbing 1 & Climbing 2 is the ultimate introduction to outdoor rock climbing. Depending on your previous experience and your level of interest in pursuing climbing as a new hobby, you may consider taking both classes. Alternatively, take Climbing 1 to try it out, and return soon if you’ve gotten hooked on climbing. Or, for the novice to “advanced beginner” gym climber with little or no belaying experience, jump straight to Climbing 2.

Dates Offered: Clinics offered year-round, 3-5 times per month. For a complete list of dates, visit our:Activity Calendar.

Minimum Number Needed For Class: 2 People (if you are the only person signed up for your course, you will be given the option to reschedule at no cost, or upgrade to a private climb).

Maximum Class Size: 10 People (Compare to other guides companies – MINIMUM of 8-10 needed for similar class – Adventure Out has the best guide to student ratio in the Bay Area!)

Age Requirement: Minimum age 10. Minors must be 13 or older to attend alone (ages 10-12 must attend with an adult that is also registered for the class). If you’re looking for climbing programs for younger kids, EMAIL US to discuss private and private group options!

Kathleen Kennedy OBITUARY

Kathleen (Kit) Kennedy passed away on January 25, 2024 with family at her side. She lived in San Francisco, Burlingame, Millbrae, and Palo Alto, California, as well as Boulder, Colorado. Kit was preceded in death by her parents Bob and Lee Price, her husband David Johnson Kennedy (in 1983), her brother Douglas Price, and her eldest son David Robert Kennedy. Kit is survived by her loving partner Larry Stafford, brother Donald Price, daughter-in-law Shawn, son Steven (Elise), son Brian (Vivian), daughter Karen Samoranos (Clifford), and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.Kathleen was a camper, and later a counselor, at Camp Wasiata at the YMCA Jones Gulch facility near Pescadero where she coined her nickname “Kit.” She attended Taylor School, Burlingame High School, and then went to U.C. Berkeley, to become a teacher. Kit taught children in nursery and elementary schools. She earned a Master’s Degree in Child Development from San Francisco State at the same time as raising her children. She was a strong advocate for women. Her Master’s thesis was on gender-based expectations of parents. Kit had a lifelong interest in science, especially evolution, dinosaurs, and biological taxonomy. Kit was a leader in the Sierra Club Singleaires hiking group, where she met Larry Stafford in 1984 and together they hiked and shared life’s adventures for nearly 40 years. She kept her hiking skills sharpened, just a year ago finishing her goal of walking in all 113 parks and outdoor spaces in Boulder. A celebration of life will be held in summer 2024. Please consider making a donation in her honor to the YMCA at https://www.ymcasf.org/ sustainability-fund ( select Jones Gulch ).
