Accommodation

The cabins on AIDA Cruises ships are divided into the following four types:

  • interior cabin
  • oceanview cabin
  • balcony cabin

The size of the standard interior cabin equals 13 - 16 square meters whereas the main sleeping accommodations are represented by two beds, joined together or separated. Pullman beds serve as additional sleeping berths. Interior cabins on the AIDA cruise ships are small, so if there is enough space for two passengers there the company of four passengers is strongly recommended to choose at least an oceanview cabin where in most cases there is 1.5 times more living space.

Cruise Ship Review: AIDAperla

Total immersion on aidaperla.

Those smiling red lips and exotic Cleopatra eyes on the bow make AIDA’s cruise ships the most strikingly dramatic-looking ships in any cruise port, from China to Miami to the Mediterranean. Yet outside of Germany, AIDA is almost unknown, even amongst cruise-lovers.

I was the only American, and the only non-German speaker on my week-long cruise on AIDA’s newest ship AIDAperla … and it was one of my best and most unique cruises ever.

“Aren’t you worried that no one will speak English,” a friend asked me before I left.

“Well, not speaking German wouldn’t stop me from visiting Germany,” I explained. “So what’s the difference?”

AIDAPerla: The Passengers

More than 95 percent of AIDA guests are German speakers, but all of the crew speaks English, and very well too. In fact, it’s the official language the crew uses to communicate since they are from all nationalities. All of the major announcements are made in German, but most are repeated in English. If you are an experienced cruiser, you won’t have any difficulties.

In fact, being on a German line while cruising through Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium (plus a day in the UK) made the cruise more immersive in the European experience, both in the shore excursions and then back on board. I had all the cruise advantages — not having to unpack and repack for each destination, no worries about transportation — yet the ship was like a beautiful small German town. I could take a leisurely walk around the sophisticated little town each evening and try a different international restaurant, check out what was happening in the town square, watch the cabaret show perhaps, have a drink at an outside terrace bar to catch the sunset, and afterwards enjoy the beach party under the stars on the top deck. There was even a late-night takeout currywurst (curry-flavored pork sausage) stand and a tapas bar outside the disco where revelers could take a break from the loud dance music and neon lights to have a snack and hang with their friends on the street outside.

And just like a real town, the guests were a mix of families, groups of friends, couples, and people of all ages.

But the differences on AIDAperla go well beyond language.

Informality, Inside and Out

The atmosphere on AIDA is informal and individual. There are no rules about attire or formal nights. If you want to dress up and go to the steakhouse, then go ahead, but you can also stay casual and eat very well at one of the informal buffet restaurants. Over a beer one night, a fellow guest confided that her husband loves AIDA because he never has to put on a tie. There is even a nude area in the spa and a secluded clothing-optional area for sunbathing on the top deck.

The ship design was bright and modern with lots of natural materials and innovative spaces. “Germans like to be outside or feel like they are outside,” one crewmember told me. The design of AIDAperla is oriented towards the outdoors, with lots of light and windows everywhere. Most of the bars and restaurants feature outdoor tables, and even some of the inner spaces like hallways, are designed to look like tree-lined streets, and the spa and gym feature cleverly designed ceilings that make you feel like you are working out under a beautiful green canopy of trees.

The informal feel of AIDA extended to the entertainment as well. The main theater on AIDAperla is a three-story amphitheater that is wide open on all sides in the middle of the ship. This made stopping to watch just part of the show much easier as you walked passed the space.

Food and Bier

In keeping with the informal theme, there is no main dining room, and other than a few specialty restaurants that charge a small supplement, you never need to make a dining reservation. Dine anytime you please, with whomever you please. There are 12 unique restaurants aboard AIDAperla , and about half are buffet style. The food is extremely varied, from a large Asian restaurant, a sushi bar, a steakhouse, Italian and French restaurants, and a beautiful and elegant gourmet restaurant. The house wine and beer are included at every meal and there are small supplements for more expensive wine and cocktails.

The uniquely German Brauhaus is a lively space where guests sit at long wooden tables. Unless there are sing-alongs, where guests are dancing on the tables. The AIDAperla biermeister brews three different beers aboard using actual seawater!

One of my favorite spaces was the Lanai Bar on Deck 7 at the very back of the ship. The large open bar features unique, outward facing booths where guests face the water yet are protected from the wind. It’s the best-designed space….

An Inside Look at AIDA’s Adjusted Onboard Experience

  • July 10, 2020

aida cruises inside

AIDA Cruises has announced it will offer cruises with three ships from German ports in August.

The AIDAperla will be the first to set sail on August 5 from Hamburg, followed by the AIDAmar from Rostock-Warnemünde on August 12 and the AIDAblu from Kiel on August 16.

The changes to bring the three ships back into service are sweeping, touching on every aspect of the cruise experience.

  • The sailings will feature all sea days and operated at reduced capacity.
  • Each guest will provide health information and risk-increasing factors related to COVID-19 prior to travel and check-in.
  • Before check-in, the body temperature of every guest is measured without contact. A team of doctors is also available to clarify symptoms or other information, and if necessary, a COVID-19 PCR test can also be carried out.
  • If a guest lives in an area in Germany with 50 new infections per 100,000 residents in the last 14 days, that guest must present a recent (not older than 48 hours) negative COVID-19 test prior to board.
  • Check in will be staggered as guests will reserve their time slots for check-in on the day of arrival and check-out on the day of departure.
  • If a guest is denied boarding, the trip can be rebooked prior to Oct. 31, 2020.
  • Onboard, guests and crew must keep at least 1.5 meters away from other people.
  • If minimum distance cannot be maintained, mouth and nose protection is mandatory for guests and crew.
  • No face mask protection is required in the outer areas of the ship, in restaurants and bars on the square, on fitness equipment and during sports courses.
  • Guests can use both fabric masks and medical protective masks, and must supply their own masks. Additional masks are available for purchase aboard.
  • All cabins are cleaned daily according to the dual principle of “Clean and Sanitize.” In addition to the normal cleaning process, surfaces are disinfected and all vacuum cleaners are now equipped with HEPA filters.
  • For dining, no fask masks are necessary at tables.
  • There will be no self-service in the buffets.
  • Buffet restaurants will feature breakfast and lunch a la carte, and a three-course dinner menu.
  • Restaurant seats for all meals must be reserved no later than three days before the start of the trip.
  • AIDA did not comment on bar service, but it is believed all bar seats have been removed.
  • AIDA does not have a traditional show lounge, but instead uses its atrium for most entertainment, giving it an advantage as it enables the artists to keep enough distance from each other and from guests. AIDA, however, is asking guests to wear mouth and nose protection before, during and after the events.
  • The disco will be closed for the time being, and AIDA will not have pool parties, according to the line.
  • The company’s spa is open, but the sauna area remains closed. Spa capacity will be significantly limited.
  • The gym is open, with an increased minimum distance of 2.5 meters between guests, and reduced capacity. AIDA said it has reduced the number of workout machines. Cleaning frequency will be increased.
  • The pools on board and the water slides are opened under increased security measures. The number of people per pool will be limited.
  • As well, the slot machines in the casino will operate; the shops will be open with limited capacity.

Health Plan

  • Each guest will provide health information and risk-increasing factors related to COVID-19 prior to travel and at check-in. At the check-in, the body temperature of every guest is measured without contact.
  • A team of doctors is also available to clarify symptoms or other information. If required, a COVID-19 PCR test can also be carried out.
  • Daily health and temperature check for all crew members as well as COVID-19 PCR test on embarkation and at regular intervals while onboard.
  • AIDA said it has staffed up its doctor and nurse staff onboard.
  • The ships are equipped with the latest PCR test kits and diagnostic devices for the immediate evaluation of suspected cases.
  • The company said it will arrange disembarkation, medical care and travel home for the guest as soon as possible if the COVID-19 disease is confirmed.
  • Running at reduced capacity, AIDA said it has sufficient options for the necessary individual isolation in the hospital or in the cabins provided.

With AIDAnova, AIDA Cruises penultimate new build, a new generation of ships was heralded that sets standards both inside and outside the AIDA Cruises fleet. The ship is 37 meters longer than the previously commissioned AIDAprima and AIDAperla. The number of cabins has increased by 983 compared to the AIDAperla to a total of 2.626 cabins. The number of guest beds corresponds to 5.252 with double occupancy.

AIDAnova also has a significantly lower impact on the environment than the other fleet members. By using LNG liquefied natural gas, emissions of particulate matter and sulfur oxides are largely avoided and nitrogen oxides and CO2 emissions are noticeably reduced. The proof: no more dark clouds of exhaust gas leave the ship's funnel.

The increase in ship length and the two additional decks create space for 983 additional cabins and suites. The size of the ship requires new interior designs. Attractive restaurants and bars were added and the STUDIO X became the first TV studio on the sea.

AIDAnova offers a total of 2.626 cabins and suites. Guests can choose from 21 different cabin variants. From the single inside cabin with an area of 10 m² to the five-person suite of 83 m² and a sun deck of up to 38 m², almost every wish is fulfilled.

Cabins wherever you look

Cabins wherever you look

The cabins are presented in a homely and clear design. The feel-good factor sets in right away. There is enough storage space and a number of light sources. The cabins are decorated in red or blue tones.

Veranda cabin with red tones

Both color variants look pleasing. The size of the bathrooms within the standard categories is perfectly adequate. In cabins with a portable wardrobe, however, the wet cells are usually smaller.

Inside cabin

The suite residents enjoy additional privileges such as priority check-in, priority baggage service on the day of arrival or assistance from a concierge. Guests in the standard cabins are offered a rather limited service compared to competitors. For example, you only see your cabin steward once a day. But that is an AIDA standard that is accepted by customers.

Junior suite with lounge

Food and drink on board

A cruise ship with well over 5.000 guests must offer a variety of dining options. In the AIDAnova there are a total of 15 restaurants, three snack bars and 17 cafés and bars. The restaurant concepts differ significantly. As before on the AIDAperla and the AIDAprima, the guests can discover various dining options and, as a side effect, also consume drinks that are subject to a charge. It does not have to be the market restaurant that is unavoidable on AIDA ships where you eat. The shipping company definitely does what it advertises on the AIDAnova: "culinary diversity". A distinction is made between the following restaurant categories.

Gourmet restaurant Rossini

Buffet restaurants

Food and selected drinks are included - coffee and wine specialties for a surcharge - reservations not possible.

Bella Donna offers Italian specialties. Anyone who eats there makes no mistake.

Bella Donna Restaurant

Bella Donna Restaurant

The East impresses with its clear, almost strict lines. Asian and European cuisine is skilfully mixed. The restaurant can also be recommended to those guests who do not immediately melt away with Asian cuisine.

East Restaurant

A family restaurant with an attached children's buffet. The turbulent and loud Fuego is the hip "dining room" for burgers, pizza & Co.

Fuego restaurant

The Markt Restaurant is one of the established institutions on AIDA ships. In the spacious restaurant, the focus is on seasonal freshness.

Markt Restaurant

At the stern of the ship, the yacht club offers "pleasure variety in maritime flair". Multimedia screens create a sea atmosphere. The food offer seems a bit limited compared to the other buffet restaurants. The yacht club has outdoor seating; that makes it particularly attractive.

In the brewery the guest can take the three main meals. The brewery is in top form in the evening. Then hearty meals and beers brewed on board are served. Chicken and pork knuckles are preferred. Depending on the destination, you can also eat outside. After dinner, the brewery turns into a party scene. Karaoke events or Bavarian evenings then determine the action.

Rustic in the brewery

The Brasserie French Kiss stands for fine French specialties such as snails or beef fillet and exemplary service. For those who like it stylish: Breakfast is served with étagères at the seat. Visually, the restaurant is an asset to the ship. However, the guests placed in the corridor area experienced a lot of unrest.

The Ocean's spoils with fresh fish and seafoold specialties. The quality of the food is really remarkable. In addition to the service on site, there is a buffet with fish rolls, salads and dessert. Our tip: reserve early or hope for a lucky hit. Our verdict: absolutely great.

The restaurant is the right place to enjoy Italian delicacies. The furnishings borrowed from Venetian models. In our opinion, this restaurant presents the best architectural concept on board. Pleasing: the very good service. At Casa Nova it is also said: Please reserve early!

À la carte restaurants

In all à la carte restaurants, the following applies: You have to pay for food and drinks. However, the prices are moderate compared to other shipping companies. The dishes are served at the seat.

The restaurant specializes in South American grill specialties.

Sea voyages and lots of free time make you thirsty. We have a total of 17 bars and lounges on board the AIDAnova. We present the bars by deck. Most of it speaks to us; but it is well known that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

There are four bars on the 6th deck. They are

Art bar - a multimedia bar embedded in the Art Gallery;

Nova Bar - the central bar at the theatrium;

Rossini Bar - the annex of the gourmet restaurant of the same name;

Tokyo bar - it attracts with the diversity of Asia.

Art bar

They're on this deck

Casino Bar - a part of the casino;

French Kiss Bar - French charm next to the French Kiss brasserie;

Lanai Bar - a sheltered outside bar with awnings on the aft deck;

Box 7 bar - another bar in the vicinity of the theatrium;

Rock Box Bar - Pub atmosphere with live music, mostly rock;

The Cube - an exclusive lounge, bar and discotheque. The Cube is the only place on board where you can party late into the night.

Casino Bar

This deck is home to the following bars and cafes

Cafe Mare - the coffee bar is the result of a cooperation with Starbucks;

Eisbar - Ice cream from our own production and other items are offered for a fee;

Juicy's - Smoothies & Co. - located in the Body & Soul Sport;

wine shop - the right place for wine connoisseurs and lovers.

Cafe Mare

The three decks offer

5.   Element - the outdoor bar behind the Four Elements. (Deck 16);

AIDA bar - the tried and tested star-shaped bar in the Beach Club (deck 16);

AIDA lounge - placed between Beach Club and Four Elements (Deck 17).

5. element

Even more space for sport and wellness

The large gym on the 8th deck is superbly done. Also the Sports outdoor area is not without. Athletes can choose from more than 30 offers. A small selection: fitness checks, fitness courses, cardiovascular training, muscle building training, private coaching lessons and more. Some of the courses and services are chargeable. There is also indoor cycling and a large mini golf landscape.

Sports area

The closed area of the activity deck Four Elements families on the 16th deck are especially popular. With the Racer and the Water Slide, AIDAnova has two impressive water slides, a climbing garden and a large LED video wall. The entrance to the water slides is on the 20th deck. The outlets are on the 16th deck. There also have Mini Club , Kids Club and the Wave club of teens their domiciles.

The other day at the Four Elements

The other day at the Four Elements

In the middle section of the AIDAnova, high above the Theatrium, on the 16th and 17th decks of the AIDA Beach Club . During the day there is a relaxed beach atmosphere.

Beach Club by day

Beach Club by day

In the evenings, the Beach Club mutates into a party zone with live music as well as LED and laser shows. - The best mood arises at the "Silent Party". Three DJs play different tracks at the same time. The music can only be heard through illuminated headphones. Each DJ is assigned a specific color, and the participants see what the others are hearing based on the colors. This tempts you to switch from one DJ to another. We are familiar with the concept from other ships; it works everywhere ... and it is anything but "silent".

Show in the beach club

We come to the Sundecks : The sundecks are spacious. Not only loungers, but also cabanas and beach chairs are ideal on days at sea with good weather. Anyone who has got hold of a nice spot defends it for hours without actually using it. Apparently there is a lack of willingness on the part of those responsible to clear away loungers that have not been used for a long time in the interests of other guests. Other cruise companies deal with such grievances more efficiently.

Sundeck

The AIDAnova wellness heaven measures 3.545 square meters. It is located in the forward area of the ship on decks 7 and 8. There are five different saunas, three jacuzzis, a fireplace room, a warm room called a “tepidarium” and two private wellness suites. The more than 80 treatments on offer are as varied as the day is long.

In the spa

The entertainment program of the AIDAnova is varied and varied. One of the centers of entertainment on board the ship is the three-story Theatrium . It ranges from deck 6 to deck 8. The ship's singers, dancers and artists have five AIDA shows in their program.

Show in the theatrium

Show in the theatrium

On the decks around the theatrium, life goes on during the day and in the evening. The decks are a social meeting point and stage for the "street performers".

That was newly created STUDIO X . AIDA Cruises is the first TV studio to present it at sea. 500 studio guests can attend the production of the shows broadcast on board TV.

Studio X

A hotspot for night owls is The Cube . During the day the club is a studio for Cocktail and dance workshops.

Cruise ships are apparently a suitable place to bring art to lovers. A means to an end is the AIDA art gallery on the 6th deck.

It's on deck 7 On-board casino . The slot machine casino is well attended on evenings at sea.

In the on-board casino

In the on-board casino

The Lanaideck (decks 7 and 8) spoils you with views and sea air. Both sides of the stern offer the opportunity to stroll, to see and to be seen. Lanai is similar to classic promenade decks. The Lanai Bar, which is very popular on nice days, is located between the two areas.

Lanai Deck with Lanai Bar

Cruise ships are generally a thorn in the side of environmentalists. Above all, ships of the older generation are rightly classified as environmental pollution. The burning of heavy fuel oil is known to cause serious environmental and health problems. As far as this topic is concerned, experts regard the AIDAnova as a model ship for environmental protection and energy efficiency. The dual-fuel ship engines can be operated 100 percent with LNG liquefied natural gas at sea and in port, if it is available. When using LNG, emissions of particulate matter and sulfur oxides are largely avoided and emissions of nitrogen oxides and CO2 emissions are significantly reduced. Under normal conditions, dark exhaust plumes above the chimney system are a thing of the past.

Not a dark cloud over the chimney

Not a dark cloud over the chimney

Further technical improvements were also achieved in the hydrodynamics of the underwater hull, heat recovery and water purification.

The AIDAprima and AIDAperla were the inspiration for the external appearance. The AIDAnova has also taken over the new, straight ship's bow and the covered forecastle. The ship's design is consistently straightforward. The interior design was designed tastefully. The choice of colors and the materials used testify to the high stylistic and quality requirements of the shipping company.

* ) the technical information is based on shipyard information

In our opinion, AIDA Cruises is presenting the most successful cruise ship in the 13-ship fleet to date with the new building.

AIDAnova is a further development of the AIDAprima and AIDAperla introduced in 2016 and 2017. Compared to the two predecessor ships, the AIDAnova has grown noticeably in size. Passengers must be able to accept more than 5.000 fellow travelers at any time. But the size of the ship is not only exhausting; it also offers individualists enough retreat opportunities on the generously dimensioned ship. Especially outside the holiday season, it is good to endure on board this huge ship.

The variety of restaurants and bars is remarkable. The entertainment on offer, how could it be otherwise at AIDA Cruises, caters to many tastes. And AIDAnova is a ship for the whole family. Passengers who can live with the once-daily cabin service typical of AIDA Cruises in the standard area will like the new flagship very much.

AIDAnova uses the most modern environmental technology in all areas. As a cruise ship, she definitely sets standards.

Tip: We tested the AIDAnova on a Canary Island cruise. You can find an overview of the offers at AIDAnova Canary Islands on our website kreuzfahrtenkanaren.de .

Feedback from our customers

  • This was my second time with AIDA. This time I organized a trip for 8 people. Since they were traveling for the first time, maybe they will use AIda services again in the future.
  • I like them, doing already second time with them
  • Our mission is to learn German and go back to AIDA again. Our lack of German made it a little tricky so we feel we would have an even better experience if we had some German next time.
  • Total disorganisation.Reception and serving staff were not wellcoming and not helpful.All specialities restaurants were already fully booked from the first day of our arrival and we had to scramble and fight to find a table in the buffet restaurants....
  • I Will travel becouse is good price but Im more satisfsi with Msc
  • After this cruise I am an Aida fan and like in the song " i want all, i want it all and i want it now."
  • Definitively would use again.
  • No activities onboard in English.
  • too short voyage for 1 week cruise.
  • Terrible booking process in terms of payment. Inadequate information on website and hard to navigate. Over-crowded and too many children. I thought I was constantly in a corridor. Not good for singles. Previous 2 AIDA cruises have been wonderful, on different ships at different times....

AIDA Online

Benefits for our loyal guests: aida club.

guest

We reward loyalty to AIDA! What was previously our frequent traveler program became the AIDA Club in 2011. This bonus program rewards days spent on board with attractive club benefits. Our guests don’t even have to register: After only ten days’ cruising within a five-year period, they automatically start to enjoy various complimentary benefits. With a greater number of days, for example we award on-board vouchers, invite guests to participate in club meetings or give them the chance to enjoy exclusive culinary highlights. Frequent travelers also receive their own personal log-in details for the AIDA Club portal. By the end of 2011, the AIDA Club already had 650,000 members, and in 2012, we are aiming for 800,000. Our online information platform for members has also been very well received. By the end of 2011, almost 117,000 members had registered there. By the end of 2012, we would like to increase this figure to 150,000 and encourage members to be proactive in helping to shape the club.

The virtual world of AIDA

Facebook

We recognized the importance of social media as a tool for communication and interaction early on, and today we are very well established in this area. Almost 200,000 fans “liked” us on  Facebook in 2011, and we’re aiming for 350,000 “likes” in 2012. In addition to the latest news, video clips and information about AIDA, we also provide our Facebook friends with an attractive platform to interact with us directly. The “ AIDA Weblounge ” online community represents another important component of the virtual AIDA world. Fans and AIDA friends can meet here to discuss all travel-related subjects. Captains, club directors and guests blog directly from our ships and post their vacation photos. The increasing number of users confirms the success of this community. At the end of 2011, there were already more than 68,000 members. From the beginning of March 2012, we want to give 300,000 AIDA Club members access to the web lounge. By the end of the year, we’re therefore expecting user numbers to increase to around 90,000. The content shared by users provides valuable assistance to those interested in a cruise as they plan their next dream vacation. In this way, the community offers real added value to both our fans and our potential guests. Naturally, we are also active on YouTube, Twitter and Google+, providing information about vacationing with AIDA.

Protection of guest data

Responsible handling of our guest’s personal informations is a matter of course for us. We therefore only collect, process and use personal data in compliance with statutory requirements, first and foremost the EU Data Protection Directive and Germany’s Federal Data Protection Act. It is a fundamental principle for us that personal data is only further processed with our guests’ prior personal consent. Employees who deal with customer data are given training on applicable legislation and our guidelines by our data protection officer. The privacy statement and privacy guidelines are binding for all our employees. In 2011 we expanded our existing privacy policy to the new statutory requirements.

TÜV Süd certifies AIDA Cruises’ compliance with data protection regulations. In the report period for 2011, there were no infringements of any regulations.

These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation. They also assist them throughout the cruise by providing information and tips on onboard dining, entertainment, enrichment program (workshops, pre-scheduled events), casino and shopping promotions, shore excursions and tours. AIDAsol is the 5th liner in the Sphinx-class/series of AIDA Kreutzfahrten and fleet's 8th vesel. It was christened on April 09, 2011, in Kiel Germany . The Papenburg Shipyard used laser-hybrid advanced technology in assembling 54 steel blocks to form the vessel's body. Fun fact is that 200 t of paint was the total weight applied and 1,700 km of cables laid. The ship features a brewery, an additional deck, a vast (25,000 ft2) wellness complex. Its 7 restaurants occupy a total area of over 46000 ft2, while the Sun Deck is sized 71000 ft2.

AIDA's Sol ship is an energy-efficient vessel, with modern propulsion and engines significantly reducing CO2 emissions. Just the lighting system saves 3,000 t greenhouse gases per year. Just like the sisterships, Sol was built around AIDA's "club resort" concept. These vessels were designed with young and active passengers in mind. The language spoken on board is German, as the majority of AIDA cruise ship passengers are Germans and German-speaking Europeans (from Austria and Switzerland).

On May 30, 2015, AIDAsol became the world's first-ever cruise ship that received power supply by an LNG hybrid barge. The Hummel barge (by Becker Marine Systems) provided 7,5 MW of power to the vessel docked in Hamburg . The LNG barge (length 76,7 m, width 11,4 m) was constructed by Becker Marine to serve as a floating power plant generating electrical power via a 15-ton LNG (liquefied natural gas) container. In its processing plant, the cryogenic liquid is heated and passed on to 5 Caterpillar motors producing electricity - without any sulfur emissions. The levels of NOx and COx emissions are significantly reduced. The technology is deemed the cleanest for shore-to-ship electrical power supply.

On March 4, 2018, AIDA announced Sol ship's new Captain - Mrs Nicole Langosch (of German origin) - the fleet's first-ever female Captain.

The ship's last drydock refurbishment was in 2023 (October 1-15) conducted at the yard of LYRS (Lurssen Yacht Refit & Services GmbH) in Hamburg. The 2-week project (managed by Hellmann Worldwide Logistics' Marine & Cruise division) included mainly general maintenance and class works. Several of the public areas were redesigned.

Haugesund is one of Norway's most popular cruise destinations.

Located on the southwest coast of Norway, Haugesund is a historic town recognized as one of the country’s premier cruise ports. As a cruise port, it appeals as a gateway to exploring Norway's coastal landscapes and rich Viking heritage.

In 2023, the city welcomed 125 cruise ship visits, accommodating more than 370,000 passengers, thanks to its ability to handle some of the world’s largest vessels.

Among these, Iona , one of Britain’s largest ships with a capacity of 5,206 passengers, makes regular stops here as part of its P&O Cruises Norwegian fjords tour. European focused lines AIDA and Costa Cruises make occasional calls at Haugesund, as do Cunard and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines.

Visitors can explore ancient monuments like the Haraldshaugen, stroll along the bustling waterfront, or venture into the surrounding countryside to discover serene trails and traditional farms.

Despite the rising number of visitors, there's no shortage of unique activities to explore on your own, away from the typical cruise line excursions.

Downtown Haugesund

If you find yourself wandering through downtown Haugesund with time to spare, make sure to visit Viking Planet . Here, Haugesund’s Viking Age history is brought to life through immersive virtual reality, 3D presentations, and other digital experiences.

Of course, there’s more to Haugesund’s history than just its Viking roots. Karmsund Folkemuseum reveals the stories of the city’s involvement with shipping, fishing, and agriculture, in the 1,000 years since the Viking Age.

Elsewhere in the city, Our Savior’s Church is a striking red-brick, new Gothic church with a notable tower and room for more than 1,000 people inside. The church is usually free to enter on cruise days, although donations are appreciated.

My 12-day cruise cost me about $109 a day. See inside my 160-square-foot cabin, the most economical option on the ship.

  • I went on a 12-day Holland America Line cruise and paid a little over $1,300 for my interior cabin.
  • The cabin was an incredible value and I especially liked the storage and spacious shower.
  • I'd book this room again — my cruise was so fun and busy that I barely spent time in it anyway.

Insider Today

In a time of high inflation and stretched budgets, cruises reign supreme . Since most packages are pretty all-inclusive, you can pay for a week or more on a ship and then not spend another dime until you return.

I definitely had value in mind when I booked my recent 12-day cruise on the Holland America Line Rotterdam from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to the Panama Canal. I selected an interior cabin , the most economical option on the ship.

I booked directly with Holland America Line and paid $849 plus $460 for taxes, fees, and port charges — about $109 a day. The rate came with a $25 onboard credit and didn't include gratuities or add-ons like drink packages , specialty dining, WiFi, or excursions.

Overall, my room was one of the best values of the trip. Here's what it was like.

I booked an interior room on deck seven.

On this ship, interior rooms can range from 143 to 225 square feet. I chose a cabin on deck seven that was 160 square feet.

The location of my stateroom was convenient and quiet. My cabin was a quick two decks up to the areas I frequented most, the spa and its thermal suite, and the fitness center.

My cabin was generously sized.

The stateroom featured a small hallway with a bathroom on the right, and two wardrobes and a cabinet on the left.

The main area of my room contained the bed.

The hallway opened to a small rectangular space with a queen bed on the right flanked by two small nightstands, each with two drawers and a tall bottom shelf.

I had a vanity that could also be used as a desk.

To the right of the bed was a large desk/vanity with an ottoman that doubled as a seat and storage space for the bed's decorative throw pillows.

This area had even more storage: The desk had three spacious drawers.

My bed was across from a mounted TV and bar area.

At the foot of the bed was a wall-mounted interactive television with on-demand movies, programming, and multi-channel music.

Next to it, I had a fully stocked minibar area, including a cabinet with things like red wine, white wine, rocks glasses, a stainless steel ice bucket, and tongs.

There was so much storage space in the room.

The full-height wardrobe had 26 hangers, including 13 pant and 13 skirt hangers, two bottom shelves, and a full-length mirror on one door.

The second half-height wardrobe closet had 12 hangers, including four pant and eight skirt hangers, four bottom shelves, and a tie rack.

One closet contained a mini fridge.

The cabinet featured three compartments: the top where robes, beach towels, and a safe were stowed, the middle with the mini fridge, and the bottom with three deep drawers.

The safe was roomy, accommodating my 13.6-inch MacBook Air plus all of my other valuables and important travel documents.

The bathroom felt spacious and well-designed.

The bathroom layout was thoughtfully designed with three glass shelves for toiletries and a large-size vanity with an underneath storage ledge.

A roomy shower was the highlight of the bathroom.

The walk-in shower was complete with a shaving foot bar, a retractable clothesline, Elemis bath products, and an adjustable handheld shower.

There were also two grab bars for stepping into and out of the shower.

There were plenty of electrical outlets in the room, too.

aida cruises inside

The room had an abundance of power outlets where I could charge my gear.

On both sides of the bed were a type-B plug, mainly used in the US, Mexico, and Canada, and a USB port. The desk had a USB port, three type-B plugs, and two type-C plugs, mainly used in Europe, South America, and Asia.

The bathroom had one electrical outlet that could accommodate a US or European two-pronged plug.

The room service was impeccable, too.

There were two cabin stewards assigned to my room. They worked together to fully service my stateroom twice daily.

On embarkation day, I was able to request extra pillows and towels plus other preferences like turn-down service, which included a towel animal and Astor Chocolates on most nights.

Overall, I had such a fun experience on my cruise I didn't even spend much time in my stateroom.

aida cruises inside

There was so much to do on the Rotterdam that I barely spent time in my stateroom.

I spent many of my days relaxing in the expansive multiroom thermal suite, singing along at B.B. King's Blues Club, or sunbathing by the Lido Pool with a retractable roof.

The room was an excellent value, and I was glad I hadn't splurged on a balcony room or one with a window.
