EXPERIENCE WITH TAUCK

TAUCK'S YELLOW ROADS – Unparalleled Alpine views when you scale the heights of Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland by cable car, mountain coach and more

TAUCK EXCLUSIVE – Private dinner and entertainment in the historic Salt Mines of Berchtesgaden

TAUCK VALUE INCLUDES

Lunch with a tour and schnapps tasting at a 400-year-old family farm

An Alpine evening featuring traditional food & music Q&A with a noted Italian mountain climber during lunch in the Dolomites

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures, one or two on-tour flights, and extended motor coach travel.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Time to enjoy an interlude of Alpine magic... by definition, an interlude means a short play or dramatic entertainment, a musical composition inserted between the parts of a longer composition or an intermission or pause... all of which apply in some form to our delightful respite in the alpine countries of Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Austria...

Fun in the berchtesgaden, dinner and fun in the berchtesgaden salt mines.

Join us for an unforgettable dinner in the subterranean world of the Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden Salt Mines in Bavaria, near Salzburg and the Austrian border. Although the current mines celebrated 500 years of continuous operation in 2017 (it opened in 1517!), salt mining in Berchtesgaden dates back to the 12th century. You'll put on overalls and descend (or, if you wish, slide) down into the salt caverns, where you'll find an underground lake and more… and have a memorable dinner with entertainment down in the mines!

Private visit to Schloss Tratzberg

Private tour and wine reception at schloss tratzberg in the austrian tyrol.

An Alpine train takes you up to Schloss Tratzberg (Tratzberg Castle), a storybook castle perched on the slopes of the Karwendel Alps in the Tyrol region of Austria. After the first Schloss Tratzberg, built in the 13th century, burned down within 200 years, the current castle was acquired and expanded in the 1500s… and this one is a keeper; Tratzberg has retained many of its original furnishings and fittings over the centuries, and is considered one of the best preserved castles in Austria. During your visit to this storybook setting, a private tour and wine reception features wines produced from the castle's vineyards.

Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère Davos

Nights 9 and 10

Alpine style at Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère Davos

The picturesque health resort area of Davos in the Swiss canton of Graubünden is home to the stylish Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère Davos, set on the promenade along with an impressive selection of shops, restaurants, and museums. The hotel's Fitness & Wellness center has a lovely indoor swimming pool, a whirlpool, sauna, steam room and massages are available; while SPA World invites you to indulge in the "Belvédère Vital," a health club oasis with panoramic views of the splendid mountain scenery.

I loved walking through the small towns with narrow streets and local breweries with beer gardens. Tauck did an amazing job and found a way to overcome any obstacle.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Austria; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries visited on this tour to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

The deposit amount is $700 per person

Final Payment is due to Tauck  60  days before departure for lands trips, and  120  days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Guest rooms are all booked as non-smoking unless otherwise requested by guests. No-smoking sections in restaurants are rare in Europe. No smoking is permitted on board the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Switzerland, Germany, Italy or Austria. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour, prerecorded "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Austria to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

This active journey of 1,100 miles (1,609 km) through the Alps requires you to be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances often over unpaved and uneven surfaces; highest elevation on this tour is 7,736 ft. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria are home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, many centuries old. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical limitations. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The Alps are located in a temperate climate zone. On this journey, the average high temperatures from April through September range from 55 to 85 °F (13 to 29 °C). The average low temperatures range from 35 to 55 °F (2 to 13 °C). Rainfall is spread throughout the year with the summer months experiencing almost twice as much as the winter months. Munich is the driest location visited with only 20 in (610 mm) per year; Salzburg is the wettest with 31 in (794 mm) per year.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather in the Alps is temperate and unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire although not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts to dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are not generally available due to local fire safety regulations; however, valet laundry, dry cleaning and pressing services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to the Alps:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or fleece jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and memory cards
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotel do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Best time for travel exploring the alpine countries austria - germany - switzerland.

While just about any month is great to visit Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Exploring the Alpine Countries tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Fairly mild weather and fewer crowds make spring a great time to visit these countries.

Summer: Summer is a beautiful time of year to experience the region’s natural beauty and outdoor activities, even as popular sites and attractions draw crowds. It can get quite hot in the summer, so keep in mind there are very few hotels with air conditioning in the region. If the heat bothers you, you may prefer visiting in the spring or fall.

Fall: Fall is another great time to go on this tour. Although there are still a lot of crowds until mid-October, the weather is wonderful.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, salzburg – the baroque city of salzburg.

Salzburg is a city of beauty as seen in the elegant Baroque architecture that is surrounded by a stunning landscape, and as heard in the gorgeous music that emanates from the shops with inspiration from the city’s rich history. Your flight will land at Salzburg Airport, and your private transfer will greet you at the baggage claim. Mountains tower above the lush plains outside of the airport as the city stands on the shores of the Salzach River, with a skyline dominated by the Salzburg Alps. The largest peak of Untersberg rises to an altitude of nearly 6,080 feet above sea level.

What's Included:

Salzburg – The Majesty of Salzburg

In the morning, the sunlight washes over the Salzach River, and the scent of freshly baked strudel drifts over the cobblestone streets. The sounds of Mozart, who was born in Salzburg, emanate from charming cafes that are filled with locals in search of a delicious cup of coffee. After breakfast, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby eager to show you the endless magnificence of Salzburg, from the home of Mozart to the dominating presence of the baroque and neoclassical styles of the Residenz, the former palace that overtakes the western edge of Residenzplatz.

Hallstatt – A Lakeside Town of Hallstatt

After breakfast, you will leave the charms of Salzburg for the enchantment of Hallstatt.  A mountain town on the shores of the Hallstatter See, you will enjoy this gorgeous mountain town with its lake that glistens shades of opal and aquamarine.  The lake is five miles long and has a depth of 410 feet, and the steep, wooded slopes of the mountains that surround it provide the region with fjord-like charisma. The market village contains the 15th-century Roman Catholic Ascension of Our Lady Church.

Alpe di Siusi – Scenic Drive in the Dolomites

The emerald forests of the Austrian Alps fade into the chiseled granite cliffs of the Italian Dolomites. The roads wind around mountain peaks that rise to a height of 10,000 feet above sea level. The aroma of pine and evergreen fill the crisp air as you stop in the city of Bolzano, the capital of the Tyrol province. Merchants and travelers often passed through town en route to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which added to the opulent lifestyle and youthful energy of the streets. Pastel-painted houses contrast with the rolling green hills. Walkways and bicycle paths line the riversides market stalls offer samples of alpine cheese and cured ham.

Alpe di Siusi – A Day at Leisure

The remarkable greenery around town spreads to the foothills of the surrounding jagged mountains. The alpine meadows add stunning color and refreshing aromas to the region. Wildflowers blossom with yellow and purple petals as goats and cows graze along the wild grassland to manicure the verdant plain beneath the limestone peaks. The area measures three miles by more than seven miles and reaches an altitude of 6,500 feet above sea level. Hikers traverse the gentle trails that crisscross the meadows as farmers milk their free-ranging cows. The bells around the cows’ necks peel into the quiet air around you.

Fussen – Traversing Bavaria

Today you will begin your descent from the Dolomites into the enchanting Bavarian region of Germany.  You will make your way to Eibsee, a lake at the foot of the Zugspitze Peak, the tallest mountain in Germany at an altitude of 9,718 feet. The cable car begins at a lower station at nearly 3,200 feet above sea level and ends at the top station to reach more than 9,675 feet above sea level. From the cabin, you will watch the trees change into an ocean of greenery divided by the turquoise of Lake Eibsee. You will come face to face with the mountains that border the lake before ascending higher than the peaks.

Fussen – Castles and Culture

The town of Fussen is nestled into the foothills of the Alps and highlights the Romantic Road, an old Roman route that connects medieval towns across Germany. In the morning, the aroma of freshly baked cakes and pastries accompanies the scent of fresh German cappuccino, celebrated for its layers of indulgent foam. An easy, and scenic, walk outside of town leads you to the stunning fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein, as built by King Ludwig II in the 19th-century. The inspiration for the design of Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in the heart of Disneyland, Ludwig took inspiration from fairy tales and operas, most notably the works of Wagner.

Lauterbrunnen – Travel to the Swiss Alps

The aroma of strudel and rich coffee return with the light of the morning. The red hues of the rooftop shingles shimmer against the aquamarine river. After breakfast, you will leave Fussen behind to enjoy the scenic drive into Switzerland with the remarkable view of the world-famous Alps. The village of Lauterbrunnen nestles deep into the mountain-framed Valley of 72 Waterfalls. Half-timbered chalets line the streets as sheer rock walls tower above the edges of the town, including Staubbach Falls, which inspired the famous German author Goethe to write his celebrated Song of the Spirits over the Water.

Lauterbrunnen – The Beauty of the Swiss Alps

In the morning, your chalet fills with the aroma of decadent hot chocolate. Your view from your window overlooks the valley beyond town and the continuous waters of Staubbach Falls. The day is yours to explore the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Jungfrau massif at your leisure to enjoy the towns, peaks, and vistas at your pace. Hike along the trails and walkways of the Valley of 72 Waterfalls, or travel the heights of the Schilthornbahn on a cableway that reaches 22,857 feet from the valley floor to the station summit at nearly 9,745 feet above sea level.

Chamonix – Venture to the French Alps

In the morning, leave behind the glowing splendor of the Lauterbrunnen Valley for the thrills and comforts of Chamonix in the French Alps, a resort town that housed the first Winter Olympics in 1924. The scenic drive takes you beneath the dramatic rugged peaks and highlights the white heights of Mont Blanc massif. The massif contains Mont Blanc, the largest peak on the European continent at an altitude of 15,780 feet above sea level.

Chamonix – The French Alps

In the morning the scent of roasted coffee beans provides a warm and comforting atmosphere. The beauty of the village and the surrounding landscape take shape in the spreading sunlight. After breakfast, the day is yours to enjoy the French Alps at your leisure.  Take part in Europe’s longest gondola ride to the Aiguille du Midi viewpoint or indulge in the sweets of a well-loved cafe. Find your way to the Mer de Glace, one of Europe’s largest glaciers; the name means “Sea of Ice,” because the glacial expanse reaches a length of more than four miles.

Geneva – Depart for Home

The view from the top of Aiguille du Midi provides an unadulterated view of the Swiss, French, and Italian Alps. The sun shines brighter in the thinner atmosphere, and the breeze blows colder as the snow looks even whiter. A separate gondola takes visitors to the Pointe Hibronner summit terrace at 12,604 feet above sea level. When you are ready, your private transfer will meet you at the hotel to escort you back to Switzerland and the Geneva airport for your flight home.

Discover alpine hiking.

Embark on one of our Alpine Crossings, these unique tours allow you to complete each crossing while enjoying stays in authentic accommodations, as well as bag transfers on some of the trips to help lighten the load. Here are some of our most popular ones:

The E5 Alpine Crossing (Grade 5) Starting in Oberstdorf, embark on this classic Alpine crossing, finishing in Meran. Experience three countries in one legendary trek; Germany, Austria and Italy. This is one of our tougher alpine crossings with long days and sizeable ascents and descents and terrain that covers scree, rocky and exposed paths with sections of rope to aid ascents/descents. We only recommend this walk to experienced alpine walkers or novices with a good level of fitness and a head for heights. It is ideal for those who don’t want to sacrifice comfort and enjoy hiking away from the crowds. Stay in 3* hotels/guesthouses and spend one night in a mountain hut (private room).

Walker’s Haute Route (Grade 5) – If you want to enjoy the rewards of taking on one of the world’s great treks than you can’t go wrong with the Walker’s Haute Route. Regularly voted as one of the world’s top walks the journey from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn on the Walker’s Haute Route is filled with breath-taking mountain panoramas, challenging mountain passes and Alpine scenes lifted straight from a storybook. But you do need to be physically fit and as this is a strenuous high mountain trek should be happy navigating in poor conditions and have a head for heights.

Tour of the Matterhorn (Grade 5) - Walk through Switzerland and Italy on this demanding long–distance hike circumnavigates the famous peak, offering superb mountain views, as well as an insight into the two distinct regions that surround it, the Mattertal and the Aosta Valley. This is a tough and adventurous trek, but for fans of the Alps, it could not be more rewarding. This trek is ideal for experienced alpine hikers looking for their next challenge. There is no bag transfer available, adding to the difficulty. However for the walker who likes to get back to basics, this can be welcome and adds to your sense of achievement.

Tour du Mont Blanc – An Alpine classic, walk through France, Italy and Switzerland, staying in comfortable accommodation each night. It’s the perfect Alpine trek for those who prefer their trekking in comfort, is a tough trek with considerable ascent and descent on each day and there are two sections that include the use of fixed ladders and footholds, and require some very light scrambling.  We would suggest that you are an experienced walker who is looking for a challenge.

Across the Alps: Bavaria to South Tyrol (Grade 3) This tour takes you through the Eastern Alps from German Bavaria to Italy’s South Tyrol via Austria on this moderate inn to inn walking tour. This unique route has been designed by us with the Alpine novice in mind, or for those who are simply looking for a comparatively easy-going Alpine experience. Rated moderate, no Alpine experience is required to complete this tour, just a good level of fitness. You should be happy walking 13-19km and 500-1000m of ascents/descents a day. However, almost all the walks can be shortened if required. Stay in high-quality 3 and 4* hotels, and your bag will be transferred each day, giving you the freedom to walk with just a small day pack

Tyrolean Alps: Garmisch to Innsbruck (Grade 5) Walk from Germany to Austria through the Bavarian and Tyrolean Alps, Explore the historical old town of Tyrol’s capital - spend a night in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps in a traditional hut. This trip involves a mixture of moderate to strenuous hikes, whilst staying in lively cultural hubs such as Garmisch and Innsbruck. Graded moderate, there are some significant ascents and descents involved, perfect for working up an appetite for some of the hearty local cuisines! Optional walks allow a rest day if preferred. If you are looking for the best of both worlds, then this is the tour for you!

Which Alpine Crossing is for me?

A walking holiday in the European Alps is the stuff of great memories and offers many rewards. However, many people worry about what it’s like to stay in a mountain hut. Here’s our guide to staying in a mountain hut:

The huts vary in style, size and the standard across Europe varies considerably. There are many advantages to staying in high altitude huts, including cost and convenience, and it can be a lot of fun meeting new and like-minded people in the huts.

Most huts run a policy that guests should arrive by 6 pm each night. Hut wardens may release bookings that are not taken up before 6 pm, and getting there before others will be an advantage in terms of getting a good place to sleep. Sleeping huts, rather than camping, requires a lot less kit to be carried on your back.

You are not usually allowed to wear your walking boots inside the hut. Leave boots in a boot room and take advantage of slippers supplied by the hut. An alternative is to take a lightweight pair of sandals with you for indoor use.

Most huts are small and in big demand in the high season. You will find that dorms of six people or more are standard, and some might sleep ten or more. Some dorms cater for up to 40 people. The earlier you arrive, the more chance you have of choosing where you sleep and if you are with friends you will be able to sleep in the same room. Most operate a first-come-first-served sleeping arrangement. Since most people only stay for one night, you should be able to pick from pretty much all the space available, depending on your arrival time. A few huts have smaller or private rooms for couples.

Sleeping set up

Standard hut dorms will include bunks with a pillow and a woollen blanket on your bed. You will be expected to bring your own sleeping bag liner. These can be bought or made and are usually a light silk. The bedding in huts isn’t changed every day, so a sleeping bag liner makes this feel more acceptable. Check before you go if you require a sleeping bag, although it is unusual.

Most huts have communal washrooms. The traditional huts also have cold water only and just washbasins rather than showers. Modern huts will have bathrooms and showers with running hot water. The showers are usually operated by tokens that you have to pay for.

Food and drink

Water, soft drinks and alcohol are usually sold in the huts, and many also offer a set dinner menu and a breakfast. Some Rifugios also sell lunches. Larger huts might have a restaurant set-up, while smaller Rifugios will serve meals in a common room with big communal tables.

When you leave

Don’t forget to eat breakfast before you go. This is usually a basic meal of cereal, bread, jam, cheese, coffee or tea. You will need to pay, and many huts accept cash only.

Climb Kilimanjaro with Alpine Ascents

“Of all the great guide services on Kilimanjaro, Alpine Ascents might be the best. Its success rate is close to 96%, and though its treks are longer and pricier, they avoid the jam-packed Marangu Route.” – Outside Magazine. Selected once again by Outside Magazine !
Named one of the Top Adventure Tour Outfitters in the World by Travel + Leisure, who highlighted our Kilimanjaro trip. We are proud to be the only climbing company chosen as a 5 star outfitter.

Acclaimed by climbers, industry professionals, and media alike, Alpine Ascents provides a one-of-a-kind experience on Kilimanjaro. We employ a professional mountain guide from our Seattle-based staff on each trip. Your guide is generally one of our full-time Alpine Ascents mountaineering guides and adds an unmatched level of summit success and risk awareness based on their broad range of climbing experience. Our guides are Kilimanjaro climbing experts first and foremost, but have an extensive mountaineering and wilderness medical background.

Our “real ” success rate is over 95% for the last 25 years.

Every one of our Kilimanjaro expeditions is led by an professional mountaineer;  a very unique part of our ability to offer the highest quality, safety conscious expeditions.

See guides at:    Alpine Ascents mountain guide.

Please note all our Kilimanjaro staff is fully vaccinated.

We Offer Three Routes To Climb Kilimanjaro

Every one of our Kilimanjaro expeditions is led by an  Alpine Ascents mountain guide.

The right route for you: why we recommend the 7 Day Machame, 8 Day Lemosho or the 9 Day Lemosho.

Choosing a route is not as complicated as some would have you believe: Alpine Ascents, using a western guide, has an approximately 96% success rate.

Machame 7 Day Route – This has been our bread-and-butter Kilimanjaro climbing route over the last 30 years, traveling through five distinct ecosystems in seven days. This is the classic climb of Kilimanjaro with Alpine Ascents. Most of our offerings are on the Machame and with over a 95% success is an excellent non-technical route for both beginners and those with some prior climbing experience. It should be noted that the “Lemosho” becomes the Machame route on day 3 or 4.

The Lemosho 8 Day Route – Starting on the Western slope of Kilimanjaro and joining the Machame route on day 4. Enjoys an extra day of acclimatization with the additional camp at 13,400 feet. This is an excellent route for those who want an extra day on the mountain compared to the Machame route. Like the Machame we maintain an over 95% success rate on this route.

Lemosho 9 Day Route  – Our nine-day Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary is geared toward the very fit trekker/climber with a chance to sleep at the crater floor after summit. This program has an extra camp above 15,000 feet in the middle of the climb to help with acclimatization. The route is similar to the 8 day, adding a night after the summit in the crater floor, giving a half day for climbers to explore the crater, glaciers and the ash pit – simply fantastic! The 9 day also has a later start time on summit day, leaving around 6am by morning light, rather than headlamp.

It was without a doubt the most enjoyable expedition I have been a part of. From the beginning to end, the level of competency, attention to detail, knowledge base, and guideship was top notch. Not only was the western guide a pillar of knowledge, the Tanzanian crew were clearly a cut above the other outfits crews. My partner and I were incredibly satisfied with every aspect of the expedition. From the guide, to the Tanzanian crew, to the accommodations and meals, the entire expedition was incredibly enjoyable and exceeded our expectations. On a scale of 1-10, everything was a 10! I would go anywhere in the world with you.

Most outfitters employ local African staff with relatively limited climbing and medical skills, and many are simply safari or trekking companies, as their name implies. In addition to providing a professional, US-based guide, we offer the utmost in quality of services that include chef-prepared meals, dining tents, and real toilet tents. This creates a unique blend of high-end luxury tour company and professional mountain guiding.

Alpine Ascents’ Success on Kilimanjaro:

We have been guiding Kilimanjaro for over 20 years with over 95% true summit success, touting one of the highest success and safety records in the industry. In recent years we have led over 1,000 people to the summit! (Some outfitters do not count all climbers in their statistics.)

Ascending Kilimanjaro with a mountain climbing organization will greatly improve your chances of success, and we provide one of our Seattle-based guides to lead every scheduled expedition. Every trip is organized with the utmost care and quality: from our lead Western guide, to chef-prepared meals, to dining and toilet tents. We look to take care of all elements with great attention to detail.

Every one of our Kilimanjaro expeditions is led by an  Alpine Ascents mountain guide.   Along with our lead guide, we employ highly experienced local guides and generally have a 2:1 climber-to-guide ratio.  On summit night we typically add other local senior staff, bringing the climber to guide ratio to better than 2:1.  Most of these experienced local guides have between 100-500 summits each and have worked with us for many years.  Some have been guiding for between 20-35 years on Kilimanjaro.  The importance of this level of experience can not be emphasized enough.

Absolutely enjoyed it! Everything — from general coordination and accommodations to small details like the flowers on the table in our dining tent — was amazing. All of the guides were wonderful. I feel I learned a lot from all of the guides – Swahili, backpacking and climbing skills, nutrition/hydration, dealing with altitude, and general information about the mountain, Tanzania, the culture, etc. By the end, the entire crew felt like a big family. Everything was top of the line and I was amazed at the five-course meals we had all day long. AAI does so much so well that it would be difficult to list all of the strengths! Clearly everything is well-organized and executed. Our group was the envy of the mountain! My expectations were not just met, they were exceeded – in fact, they were exceeded time and time again! The level of organization for the entire trip was outstanding, from being met at the airport through the summit and return!

Physical Conditioning to Climb Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro, at 19,340 ft. is an extreme, high-altitude climb and is perhaps the most underestimated of the seven summits. You should be comfortable walking four to eight hours per day. Summit day is the most demanding portion of the climb, typically involving eight hours for the ascent, and six to seven hours for the descent. Our expeditions require strength and endurance. Being in sound physical condition is the single most important aspect for climbers to maximize their climbing potential. The better your physical condition, the more likely you are to perform well and have an enjoyable experience. The most frequent comment we have received over the years is that climbers have underestimated the fitness level needed to fully enjoy their trip. Additionally, inadequate fitness will affect the atmosphere, pace, and overall enjoyment of the climb for all participants. We highly recommend checking with your physician before undertaking any strenuous activity. Comprehensive training information can be found here .

The Mountain

Crowned by eternal snows, the mighty Kilimanjaro (19,340 ft.) is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and dominates its landscape unlike any other mountain. Located in Tanzania, this dormant volcano looms over five ecosystems and large game reserves, and is certainly one of the world’s most impressive sights. The terrain is nothing short of dramatic. As a mountaineering company, we treat this adventure as a mountain climbing expedition. We offer scheduled departures for two routes on the mountain: the Machame Route and the Lemosho Route.

Kilimanjaro is unique in many ways, but stands as the only one of the seven summits (the highest points on each continent) that is truly a nontechnical climb. Using well-marked trails to the summit along with our expert guide staff, a fit enthusiast has an excellent chance of reaching the summit. The combination of our expert guides, choice of routes, success and safety record has set Alpine Ascents apart from our peers. We invite you to review the “Why Climb With Us?” section of our website.

Kilimanjaro is an attractive climb for anyone interested in a physical challenge: climbers, wilderness enthusiasts, and hikers alike. Over the past 20 years, we have emerged as a leader in guiding climbs on Kilimanjaro, applying expertise from other formidable mountains to the wilds of Africa. We consider the Kilimanjaro climb and safari expedition to be one of the most appealing and treasured adventure experiences we offer.

Following our climb, we begin a four-day safari to the spectacular game parks of Tanzania, Ngorongoro Crater, The Tarangire River and National Park, and Serengeti National Park. Throughout the safari, we lodge in luxurious hotels and travel by Land Cruiser across the Great Rift Valley, following wildebeests, lions and other indigenous wildlife. More details can be found in our Safari Overview page and on our Itinerary pages.

Unique Characteristics

Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano composed of three extinct volcanic cones of varying ages:  Kibo (5,895 m); Mawenzi (5,149 m); and Shira (3,962 m). It is one of the world’s highest free-standing mountains: its mass rises 4,800 m above a rolling plain that averages 1,000 m above sea level. After reaching a height thought to be 5,900 m during its last major eruption 360,000 years ago, Kibo has been eroded by glaciers, rivers, and landslides to its present height.  It is believed that Kilimanjaro, like its neighbor Mt. Kenya, is losing glaciers due to localized deforestation and global warming.

The Name Kilimanjaro

Given the stature and greatness of Kilimanjaro, there is relatively little recorded history of the peak. Even the origins of the name present somewhat of a dilemma. Many people believe the name derived from the Kishwahili tribal name, Kilima, meaning “mountain.” The local Wachagga people claim to have no name for Kilimanjaro, but did name the dual peaks “Kipoo” and “Kimawenzi.”

Alpine Ascents Climb Kilimanjaro Frequently Asked Questions

Upon sign up we will forward our famed comprehensive pre-trip planning details.

All of our Kilimanjaro climbs avoid the two rainy seasons in Tanzania: the “long rains” in April and May and the “short rains” from late October through November. It is important to understand, however, that weather on Kilimanjaro is as changeable and unpredictable as mountain weather all over the world is. Some light rain is virtually constant in the lower sections of the mountain throughout the year, but it might dry out on any given day or week. And the upper reaches of the mountain, which are quite arid, can see passing rain or snow storms at any time of year.

Even though it is only about three degrees south of the equator, Northern Tanzania has surprisingly variable temperatures through different times of the year. July and August are generally referred to as “winter” by the locals, and it is the coolest time of the year in Nairobi and Arusha. Nighttime lows are typically about 48 degrees F, and daytime highs might only be in the high 60’s or 70’s. You are probably thinking these sound like very pleasant temperatures, and you are right. We tell people, “if you leave the US in the summer months and travel to East Africa, you are going to a cooler climate.” This is surprising to most people, but very true. Safari, and the time you spend in Arusha during these months, can be wonderful in terms of weather – never as hot and steamy as you probably imagine tropical Africa to be. Similarly, if you are on a trip during our winter, you will find the weather to be as much influenced by altitude as latitude. It is warmer in December or February, but it is still not extremely humid or hot.

The above description is for the lower elevations. It gets very different on the upper reaches of the mountain. Talk to anyone who has climbed Kilimanjaro at any time of the year, and they will probably comment about how cold they got on summit day. This has more to do with the mild hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and the exertion that climbers experience, than it has to do with temperatures, or even wind. When you go to 19,000 ft., anywhere on the earth, at any time of year, you need to have very efficient insulation and be prepared to conserve your body’s energy effectively. There is little difference in the degree of “warm” that can be experienced on a summit day on Kilimanjaro at any given time of year.

The most popular months on Kilimanjaro are July and August, with December running a close third. Alpine Ascents’ trips tend to fill at any time of year they are run, but you will see fewer people from other groups in months other than August or December.

Most trips run with between 12 and 15 people – though we will run smaller groups if a certain date has fewer sign ups. We also run Private Climbs year round.

We currently use three-person tents on our Kilimanjaro program. Two climbers per tent.

Yes, we have a large dining tent and tables and chairs that are used at all camps. (OK, sometimes we forgo the table and chairs at High Camp) These are especially nice if it happens to rain. Often people will go inside to get their food and then eat outdoors in beautiful evening light. We also provide toilet tents with commodes.

You will need a medium-sized backpack (say 2,500 to 3,500 cubic inches) that can hold your layers of clothing for changing temperatures and activity levels through the day. One thing that many people do not expect is the porters who carry your large bags will probably move slower that you do. It is not uncommon to get to camp as the afternoon and evening temperatures cool off, ahead of the porters, but with lots of photographs to be taken and relaxing to be done. You need to be prepared to be inactive through part of each day, as well as to hike. Most people carry packs that weigh about 20 lbs. You could pare this down to perhaps 15 if you were careful, but with a lot of camera equipment, or other personal preference-type items, it might be more.

We always plan to go to Uhuru, the true summit of Kilimanjaro, at 19,340 ft. A medical emergency that would require a lead guide’s attention rather than an African guide’s would be the only reason that they would not, but this has not happened to date.

We normally take one or two lead, or “chief,” African guides, plus three assistant African guides, for a total of five guides (including our guide) on a typical summit attempt. All of these guides are well-known to us and we have done many successful summits together. Obviously, this does not leave options for an unlimited number of turn-arounds during the summit attempt, but we have always been able to get people who really need to descend headed in the right direction very quickly, and under excellent care and supervision. This is in addition to our staff of lesser assistant guides, porters, cooks, cooks’ helpers – a staff of 50+ on full expeditions.

We offer carefully planned, highly nutritious meals prepared by trained chefs on the mountain; food quality is one of the highest praises we receive. It is not just about the great food, but getting the right food during such a demanding climb. As a climbing company (as opposed to a safari or light trekking company), we understand what and how people need to eat while in the mountains. We are happy to give you an outline of our menu plan. The quality of our expedition food is well known for all our expeditions, but is something special on Kilimanjaro climbs.

Resupplying during our trip allows us to provide lots of fresh and whole grain cooked foods. We have the best chefs and food on the mountain, hands down.

Here is a link to a sample menu in pdf.

We have private toilet tents set up at every camp. These are clean, sit down, commode-type toilets with water.

Yes, all hotels for the scheduled trip, meals on the mountain and on safari, airport transfers, and shuttle to Arusha are included. One thing that is not included in town and on safari are bottled drinks (soft drinks, bottled water, alcohol.) Also not included are tips at the hotels, tips for safari drivers, and tips for guides and porters at the end of the trip on the mountain.

We stay in high-standard safari lodges run by the renowned Sopa chain. We use these places to relax and reward ourselves after a rigorous climb. They really are beautiful in terms of setting and amenities. The safari drives have their own demands, long dusty days, and a lot of excitement and adventure with all the wildlife. One of the greatest feelings is to go into your room at the end of one of these days, get a shower and some clean clothes on, and go have a nice dinner with your friends who you recently climbed Kilimanjaro with. The sun will be setting on the African landscape and the large glass windows will scarcely separate you from this. Pretty civilized. We currently stay at the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, Tarangire Sopa Lodge, and Serengeti Sopa Lodge on our four-day, three-night Safari.

You will be in a Land Cruiser, with a maximum of five or six per vehicle. An experienced guide will drive your vehicle. He is the only person who ever drives his vehicle and is responsible for its complete operation and maintenance for the two to three years it sees service after it is purchased new by our agent in Arusha. The only seat that sometimes becomes undesirable if the vehicle is full is the front seat with the driver. Everyone in the back is under a canopy that extends up so that you can stand for wildlife viewing and photography while you are in the parks.

On the mountain, we will provide you with a large three- to four-gallon cooler of water at each camp, and during our sit down lunches. This water is cartridge filtered by the staff using a large, commercial Katydyn filter. We strongly recommend that each client then treats this water one liter at a time as you fill your bottles several times each day, using iodine or other recommended water treatment solutions. We have found that this two-stage process is the most effective in preventing water-borne issues. Steri Pens work well, but use a lot of batteries and can break, so you always need the backup treatment pills.

For the past few seasons, we have relied on the satellite phone for possible emergency communication while we are on the mountain. Things change from season to season, however. We also carry a cell phone and radio phone on the mountain and safari. All our Kilimanjaro trips are run in our normal, self-contained expedition style. That is to say, complete medical kits and equipment to deal with emergencies travel with us. This self-reliant approach is especially important in Tanzania where, unlike, say, Nepal, helicopter evacuation is very limited. The staff of 40+ experienced Chagga men who travel with each group are who we really rely on for possible emergency response. If necessary, they could carry an injured person, and they can run from any location on our route to a road head and telephones in less than one day.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

env

Created by longtime Kilimanjaro guide, Eric Murphy, with help from our local contractor, Nicholas Minja of Big Expeditions, we began utilizing an extra porter or two on each trip, and instructed them to pick up any excess garbage from other groups during our seven days on the mountain. During an average trip, we were removing up to 80 kg (165 lbs.) of extra trash. The Kilimanjaro National Park quickly took notice. In late 2012, a new park warden was elected to manage Kilimanjaro National Park, and he increased the national park’s enforcement of garbage removal. The park is now looking the cleanest we have seen it in recent times. We continue to encourage Kilimanjaro National Park to educate local operators, tourists, and porters about Leave No Trace principles (LNT) while enjoying the mountain.

Alpine Ascents is deeply committed to maintaining ecosystems at home and around the world. With each expedition, trek, and course, we not only attempt to leave the environment as we found it, but strive to assist the local population in protecting the land and people indigenous to that region. Alpine Ascents reaches for the highest ethical business practices at home and abroad. Each staff member is dedicated to environmentally sound alpine ascents. On Kilimanjaro, Alpine Ascents now hires at least one porter per trip whose sole purpose is to oversee waste removal and clean up.

At Alpine Ascents, environmental stewardship remains one of our core values and we take Leave No Trace ethics and practices very seriously. The mountains are our home and we are unwilling to sacrifice their preservation for human objectives. On every one of our courses and climbs we teach and follow the environmentally appropriate Leave No Trace principles and practices.

Over the years, with the assistance of our Sherpa teams, we have stepped up efforts to clean Mt. Everest. Our Wag Bag® program made a pioneering step in human waste management for the National Park System and Forest Service in the North Cascades. On Aconcagua, we pioneered a waste removal system on our climbs, utilizing the WAG Bag® system. And we continue our on-going maintenance and minimal impact plans wherever we guide. We believe that given the proper information, most people will do all they can to help protect and maintain the environment. Alpine Ascents is committed to developing risk cognizant, self-reliant, and environmentally conscious mountaineers.

WHY BOOK WITH ALPINE ASCENTS

Knowledge & expertise.

Alpine Ascents International leads expeditions that have become benchmarks of quality in the climbing community. We operate what we believe is the finest mountaineering school in the country. This expertise is based upon years of accumulated experience-not just from individual mountain guides, but through experience on particular mountains where details are fine-tuned over time.

Our guides are an integral part of Alpine Ascents because they understand and share our climbing principles. These individuals are dedicated to sharing their excellence with others. Many of our guides have been with Alpine Ascents for over five years, with a handful of veterans working with us for most of their careers. The quality of our Guide Staff is the primary difference between us and our competitors.

Environmental Reponsibility

Leave No Trace principles are fundamental to our program, and we encourage all who climb and trek with us to understand proper wilderness practices. We help facilitate this effort by passing on Leave No Trace training and literature to every Alpine Ascents climber.

I once ran New York City's Central Park main loop without seeing another person: It was -11 degrees F and snowing. I'm that averse to the treadmill. But winter's chill, not to mention snowy, icy roads and trails, can put a damper on aerobic training if you refuse to head to the gym. The good news: Many winter sports offer great cross-training for runners , and alpine ski touring, where the workout is only the precursor to the thrill of defying Newton's pesky principles, is one of the best.

Alpine ski touring burns about 500 to 600 calories per hour because you use climbing skins under your skis to skate your way up snowy hills and mountains before skiing down them. The striding and sliding hones your balance and uses subtle supportive muscles you wouldn't use running, and it's a great aerobic workout. Once you rip the skins off and ski down untracked snow , it's like floating on clouds. The fresh air and natural beauty won't hurt your mental state, either.

Unlike my Central Park run, I'm not alone alpine touring. Snowsports Industries America statistics show sales of alpine touring gear have risen by about 25 percent annually for the past three years. That means it's easier to find places to learn ski touring and people to safely ski with. You might even lament the melting snow come spring.

Beginner Basics

A 15-year veteran ski guide and former ski patroller at Monarch Mountain in Colorado, Gail Bindner shares these tips.

Start smart. Ski within your ability and skill level. Before heading out on your own, take a course, hike inbounds ski area terrain or hire a guide.

Tackle crud. At ski areas, instead of taking the easy, effortless lines and groomed runs, look for chopped-up, slabby or heavy snow. Bend knees in an assertive athletic stance with your weight pressing the front of your boots. Turn gradually in variable snow conditions, allowing the snow to slow you down.

Glide up. Improve uphill efficiency by gliding skis forward instead of stepping. Keep your head and chest up to open the lungs. Use bindings with an adjustable heel for steeper assents.

Relax. Take your time and smile. Not only will you have more fun, you'll be in a clearer mind-frame to make good, safe decisions in the backcountry.

Extreme weather and snow safety mean your gear can be critical when alpine touring. You can rent boots and skis, and clinics and guided programs should provide you with a transceiver, probe and shovel. Bring your own backpack to carry these plus climbing skins, warm clothing, sunblock, Chapstick, snacks and water.

The Dakine Girl's Heli Pro DLX ($95, dakine.com ) backpack does the trick with winterized pockets and a comfortable contoured fit. You'll sweat more on the uphill exertion, so breathable clothing matters more than in downhill skiwear. The REI Kulshan eVent jacket ($289) and pants ($229, rei.com ) employ direct venting so you mitigate sweat swiftly with full waterproof protection.

Where to Play

Alpine touring safely requires snow safety knowledge and adeptness with your gear. Start by taking guided tours with qualified pros, then take a course to learn safety skills. Ski resorts and outdoor shops can hook you up with guides, clinics, programs and partners.

Resorts. Newbies should stick to inbounds or guided out-of-bounds tours led from resorts. Many resorts--from Aspen and Telluride in Colorado, Stowe in Vermont, Jackson Hole in Wyoming and Whistler in British Columbia--have in-bounds terrain to get your feet powered while earning a few turns.

Reference a trail map, and be sure your skill level matches the terrain you're heading into. For example, Steamboat Mountain Resort ( steamboat.com ) has hike-to terrain friendly to skiers new to the backcountry experience, whereas sections of Jackson Hole ( jacksonhole.com ) might terrify you unless you're part bird. Ski instructors and mountain guides can guide you to new terrain based on your ski ability.

Clinics. A pioneer in women's backcountry education and empowerment, Babes in the Backcountry ( babesinthebackcountry.com ) offers backcountry, avalanche and ski clinics led by women in California, Colorado and Canada. Try a backcountry basics intro class ($120-$175 per day) or longer all-inclusive workshops and hut trips ($450-$750) to learn skills and safety essentials, build confidence and have fun in a safe and supportive environment.

Guided Trips. Strong skiers can test their mettle with a day trip out of bounds with qualified guides. You'll learn backcountry ski basics while being safely guided to untracked lines you'd not likely find on your own.

In Utah outside Salt Lake City, Solitude's Back Tracks ( skisolitude.com ) takes you into pristine snow country just beyond the resort's boundary for day trips ($185). In Colorado, Crested Butte Mountain Resort's Adventure Guide Program ( skicb.com ) employs Crested Butte Mountain Guides for full-day ($595) or half-day ($385) experiences in advanced and extreme terrain.

NEADS World Class Service Dogs celebrated Boston Duck Tours’ philanthropic initiative, ‘Quack-Quack, Give Back!” on Sunday with ambassadors and partners taking a private tour ride through the city.

The two organizations celebrated their 12-year partnership a week after Duck Tours’ 2024 season kicked off with the tour ride for service dogs and their handlers. For pooches too young for the tour, there was and a training course that included basic obedience, good manners and socialization, NEADS officials said.

Cathy Zemaitis, Chief Development and Programs Officer at NEADS lauded Boston Duck Tours for allocating proceeds made throughout the year to support NEADS. Zemaitis said a service dog in training was named Kilroy, in honor of the very first Duck Boat.

Harbor Sweets, based out of Salem, MA, also provided paw-shaped chocolates for those joining the tour, with a portion of proceeds from chocolates sold being donated to NEADS.

“Hosting NEADS Puppy Raisers and the Service Dogs in Training on our Duck Boats is one of our favorite events, and we are thrilled that they will join us for this fun, yet educational trip,” Boston Duck Tours CEO Cindy Brown said in a statement.
