Excellent car service

We were four females first time traveling and Phil made the best of all. Drove three hours to pick-drop to the airport on time both ways. On our way to the resort provided with tour and information on the tourist area around the way. Excellent car service and best of all free WiFi on the vehicle.

Fun day touring around Jamaica, Martha Brae Rafting

We booked a Martha Brae Rafting tour through Irie Tours Ja. We were on a Royal Caribbean cruise and they do not allow 2 year old to raft. Our 2 yr old rafts with us at home and this was described as a mellow river. The driver, Dirvin, picked us up on time at the gates to the cruise port. Dirvin's vehicle was reliable and clean. He took us to the rafting location, arranged the tour, and picked us up. He took us to Juici Patties (our request, very affordable and delicious), took us to the grocery store, and a beach before dropping us off at the cruise port. We had a lovely day, felt safe, and it as a treat to have such a great, kind, relaxed driver.

Andray Fletcher takes on local adventures with Tours of Greatness

They say jobs fill the pockets, but adventures fill the soul. Andray Fletcher started out as a route taxi operator in Montego Bay, St James. Seeing that the ‘Second City’ is considered the tourist capital of the island, the request for transport soon transcended to calls for scenic views and excursions. It was there that his business, Tours of Greatness, was born.

“I don’t just take my clients from one destination to another. They are receiving an informative sightseeing experience. I will stop at historical sites and give them lessons on the locations,” he told Saturday Living .

His deportment, attire and pleasant disposition while being a taxi driver made him a standout among his colleagues. Customers and passengers would encourage him to work with JUTA tours.

So for Fletcher, making this decision to become a private tour guide was a no-brainer. A fan of driving and socialising, it helps that he is a proud Jamaican who enjoys sharing the island’s rich culture with others.

“I love our culture and our people. I grew up hearing this saying, ‘We likkle but we tallawah’ and it’s true. We stand out, so I am always excited to play my part bringing that awareness to those who want to see, hear, taste, smell and feel what the island has to offer,” he revealed.

Registering his company under the name, Tours of Greatness Ja, persons are able to book an outing with him directly through his Instagram page, “I also operate from the Breathless Resort. So if someone who is staying there should come to the lobby, I’m one of the drivers who will take them to do excursions, tours and city highlights.”

Some of the local hot spots or hidden gems on his tour radar include the fire-on-water in St Ann, which he described as the most breathtaking experience, “Tourists always marvel about the water igniting the fire. The history lesson behind its phenomenon is equally amazing.” He also made special mention of Blue Hole, Dunn’s River Falls, Spanish Bridge, Blue Adventure Tours and Chukka Tours in the same parish, as well as Missile Adventure Park in Hanover as other beloved sites.

Additionally, activities worth exploring on the adventure list consist of limestone massage, river rafting and horseback riding in the ocean, “Now, there is the new sensation of clear kayaking, where females and couples engage in a drone photoshoot. They love it,” he highlighted.

Fletcher has also done some sightseeing of his own, visiting several countries in the Caribbean, namely Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua, and Barbados. In the United States, he has been to New York, Texas, Michigan, Florida and Chicago.

But closer to home, he recounted having an unforgettable visit to Norwich, Portland. “I must commend Chef O’Shane of O’Shea’s 876 Kitchen. I enjoyed that beach picnic experience.” He listed Floyd’s Pelican Bar as one of his favourite spots, along with Rick’s Cafe and Seven Miles Beach in Negril.

Those who have had the opportunity of taking his tours have become family friends. “Once they are happy, so am I,” he said, adding, “I go above and beyond for my clients to ensure that they are safe. My motto is, ‘love, vibes, safety’. Sometimes, when guests reach out to me, the first thing they ask is if they’re going to be safe. Safety comes first with Tours of Greatness Ja; that’s my first priority. Then they bring the vibes, I bring the love, and together, we create memories that will last a lifetime.”

Despite the challenges that come with being an entrepreneur in the tourist industry, Fletcher continues to be fuelled by his love and passion for tours. “I do this from my heart.”

Noting that he has never been to the parish of St Thomas, he hopes to visit one day in the near future, “I would also love to go to the motherland, Africa.”

The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience

A sensorial journey into the art of rum..

The starting step to a deeper appreciation for rum and a love for the excellence of Jamaica, the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience is a one-of-a-kind, authentic and multi-sensory experience of what makes Appleton Estate exceptional.

The unique visitor experience moves through all areas of our charming Estate.

Guests are invited to enjoy our comfortable Welcome Centre, the perfect location to relax before starting the tour, and perhaps sample a delicious Appleton Estate cocktail at the bar.

A visit to Appleton Estate must include an introduction to Appleton Estate’s legendary Master Blender, Joy Spence, the world’s first female to achieve this title in the spirits industry. Then, our guests will enjoy a short video on the history of rum and Appleton Estate.

Guests are welcomed to experience our beautiful grounds, where sugar cane gently blows cradled by the warm Jamaican wind. Surrounded by this unique atmosphere, our guests will learn how sugar cane was milled in the 17th century, and be rewarded with a cup of chilled, refreshing sugar cane juice.

Sugar cane turns into molasses, the foundation of authentic Jamaica rum. Our molasses capture our terroir and origin in their essence, a process that guests can experience during their time at the Estate.

The distillery is where our majestic copper pot stills hide the secrets of Appleton Estate’s centuries-old crafting. The sight of a tradition in the quiet atmosphere of our ageing houses, where rums await perfection in oak barrels, is breathtaking.

Every tour of the Appleton Estate must close with a stop in our tasting room, where guests will appreciate with renewed joy our Appleton Estate premium aged rums.

The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience boasts a fully air-conditioned welcome center and a beautiful full-service restaurant and bar with indoor and outdoor seating, which serves authentic Jamaican meals and delicious cocktails.

THE GIFT SHOP

The official Appleton Estate shop offers the full range of Appleton Estate Jamaica Rums, our limited editions rums (when available), an array of branded merchandise and local craft items.

The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday 9:00am-3:30pm. Walk-ins are welcome. Reservations are recommended for 15 persons or more. • Where is the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience located? The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience is located at Siloah, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, approximately 1 1/2 hours from Negril, 2 hours from Montego Bay, 2 ½ hours from Kingston and 3 hours from Ocho Rios.
• Is there a shuttle service available to and from the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience? The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience does not provide transportation. If you are hiring a private car, be sure to rely on private drivers that are licensed by the Jamaica Tourist Board.
• What are the opening hours? We are currently open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9:00am and the last tour goes out at 3:30pm. We are closed on Jamaican public holidays.
• How long does a tour last? Tours last approximately 1hr 15mins to 1hr 30mins, depending on the group size. Guests usually spend an average of two hours at the Visitor Center.
• What does the tour include? The journey begins with a cocktail in our air-conditioned welcome center. The first stop is the theatre where guests enjoy a short video on the history of rum and the Appleton Estate. The tour moves outside to the beautifully landscaped grounds where they take a multi-sensory journey from cane to cocktail and discover how we have crafted the Appleton Estate Rums since 1749, including visits to the distillery and aging house and a guided tasting of three Appleton Estate Rums.
• Do I need to make a reservation for a tour? Reservations are not required but are recommended for group of 15 or more. You may book a tour by calling 876-448-2237 or 876-850-0090 or email [email protected]
• How much time should I plan on spending at the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience? Our guests spend an average of two hours at the Visitor Centre.
• When is the last entry to the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience? The last entry is just before our last tour goes out at 3.30 pm.
• Can photos be taken during the tour? Photos are allowed, except in the distillery.
• Is there a restaurant and bar at the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience? There is a full-service restaurant and bar serving authentic Jamaican meals and delicious Appleton Estate cocktails.
• Is there a gift shop at the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience? The gift shop sells the full Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum range as well as limited edition rums, Appleton Estate branded merchandise and local crafts.
• What is the cancellation policy for tours? We have a 48-hours cancellation policy for pre-booked tours with lunch.
• Is the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience accessible to guests with disabilities? All areas of the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience, including bathrooms, are accessible by wheelchair except for the lookout tower and the distillery.
• Is the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience suitable for children? The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience is an educational tour that speaks to the history of rum in Jamaica and Appleton Estate's unique rum making process. The tour is more suited to adults, but children accompanied by an adult will be accommodated. Please be advised that visitors under the age of 18 years old are not allowed to participate in the tasting or to consume alcohol.
• What methods of payment are accepted? Cash in Jamaican and US currencies are accepted as well as Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover card.
• How many guests can be accommodated on a tour? Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the maximum number of guests allowed per tour group is 24. Tours can go out every 10 mins, so if you have a larger group, the guests can be broken into smaller ones to ensure that all protocols for the COVID-19 pandemic are observed.
• What protocols have been put in place for the covid-19 pandemic? The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience is certified by the relevant Jamaican authorities and the recommended protocols for the Covid-19 pandemic have been implemented. Currently all guests must sanitize their hands and have their temperature taken before entering the building. They must wear a mask, covering their nose and mouth while on tour except when enjoying a cocktail, participating in the tasting and while seated at the table in the restaurant. Physical distancing of 6 feet between tour groups must also be observed.
