The band have also spoken to NME for this week’s Big Read cover story , discussing the making of ‘WE’, the departure of band member Will Butler and their upcoming tour plans. In the interview, frontman Win Butler said he hopes the 2022 dates would represent “the definitive Arcade Fire tour”.

Arcade Fire will serve as the musical guest on tomorrow’s (May 7) episode of Saturday Night Live , which will be guest hosted by actor Benedict Cumberbatch. In a new promo clip, the actor attempts to present the segment according to the script , but his efforts are scuppered by cast member Ego Nwodim and the members of Arcade Fire.

Last week (April 29), the band played the reopening of London’s iconic KOKO venue – marking their first live appearance in the UK since 2018. You can read the NME review of the gig here .

In a four-star review of ‘WE’ , NME said: “Our global journey from fear to appreciation is played out in what Arcade Fire themselves accurately describe as a “concise 40-minute epic”. Philosophically, they haven’t been so focussed since 2010’s ‘The Suburbs’, nor so musically dramatic since 2007’s ‘Neon Bible’. Subscribe.”

Arcade Fire wasted no time declaring its purpose Saturday at a mostly full United Center. “Gotta get the spirit out of me,” vocalist-guitarist Win Butler repeatedly sang on the opening “Age of Anxiety I.” As if answering in agreement, his wife — multi-instrumentalist/singer Régine Chassagne — echoed the line right back at him.

The release of raw emotion and search for authenticity defined the nearly two-hour show, which never fully transcended an aura of tension caused by allegations leveled at Butler this summer. The performance also showcased Arcade Fire’s attempt to reengage with the sweeping, stadium — ready style that in the mid-2000s helped the band rapidly make the jump from small clubs to larger venues. By happenstance, Chicago played a key role in the group’s rise.

In 2005, before Lollapalooza became a destination festival synonymous with teenage fans, Arcade Fire delivered a triumphant set as upstarts at the resurrected, then-two day event in Grant Park. Staged amid sweltering heat, the concert made national news and triggered a wave of momentum. For the better part of the subsequent decade, the collective stood at the forefront of the indie rock community — respected not only for its music but its inclusive attitude, social consciousness and philanthropy.

Even as the group struggled to find a consistent creative footing on “Reflektor” (2013) and “Everything Now” (2017), its reputation remained intact. More awards and acclaim followed. Yet Arcade Fire’s character recently came into question after multiple people accused Butler of sexual misconduct that allegedly occurred before the pandemic. An investigative report by Pitchfork magazine surfaced in late August, days before the band embarked on its current world tour.

Arcade Fire multi-instrumentalist Régine Chassagne performs at the United Center in Chicago on Nov. 12, 2022.

Butler, who admitted to the extramarital relations, maintains the interactions were consensual and He apologized, spoke of a bout with drinking and depression and revealed struggles with mental health issues. Chassagne issued a statement supporting Butler and their partnership.

Nobody in the group addressed the issues on Saturday. Still, it was impossible to ignore the unspoken uneasiness — similar to the vibe you get when confronted with a moral dilemma surrounding something or someone you admire — that hung in the air. Concertgoers in several markets have asked for ticket refunds or called for boycotts. Some suggested the tour be canceled. Indie-rock peers Feist and Beck, originally scheduled to open certain legs of the trek, dropped off the bill.

The circumstances present a challenge to an ensemble whose songs invite participation and whose ethic thrives on collectivity — its latest record is titled “We.” Arcade Fire’s once seemingly unbreakable bond with its followers may be fractured. Fans also faced a dilemma: Is it still OK to celebrate and come together with thousands of strangers and the band as one voice?

Arcade Fire on Saturday did nearly everything in its reach to forge a shared connection and hint that optimism, goodness and understanding are still possible in a polarized era. The band’s interactions — spontaneous, delirious, occasionally disjointed — shied away from the slick moves now commonplace at many arena shows. So did its refreshingly unpredictable set, which varies on a nightly basis and doesn’t need to be tethered to programmed cues or expensive props.

The group was about as in-your-face as a band could be in an arena setting. It approached the occasion like it might a street-corner party. Members took turns on various instruments scattered about the stage. Haitian multi-instrumentalist Paul Beaubrun and Butler often played while standing on monitors. Butler also waded into the crowd on multiple occasions. Not to be outshined, Chassagne exchanged high-fives as she skipped to a second platform where she climbed atop a piano. At once intimate and bigger-than-life, the presentations suited the music.

Tackling a host of big-concept themes, songs fizzed with energy and conviction. The most feverish compositions worked overtime to compel anyone within earshot to submit to their giant hooks and propulsive rhythms. The end goals for nearly every tune: attaining spiritual communality through singalongs and dispensing tender advice that we’re all going through life together.

The catchy “Rebellion (Lies)” came across as the sound of unified community via a nervous-twitch bass line, blown whistle, hand drum and wordless backing refrain. The strum of a 12-string acoustic guitar, a lush melody and a wheezing accordion on “Lightning I” gave way to a double-time signature and garage-rock impulses on the interconnected “Lightning II,” whose adrenaline spike underlined feelings of hope, inspiration and enthusiasm.

Chassagne and company also sang about innocence (“Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)”), defiance (“We Exist”) and escape (“No Cars Go”) — with the threats of modern reality and emptiness of consumer culture never far away. “Reflektor” belied its carefree electro-funk symmetry by dealing in dashed dreams and personal detachment; the mechanical synthesizers and shouted pleas on “Creature Comfort” complemented the narrative dread, pain and desperation at hand.

Faced even with the decline of America (“End of the Empire I-III”), however, Arcade Fire found reasons to believe (“End of the Empire IV (Sagittarius A*)”). The band also knew enough to leverage its seriousness and density with well-placed humor. A family of inflatable, smiley-faced tube puppets suddenly appearing during the heartfelt folk of “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)”? Silly, and fun. Satirically condemning instant gratification and excess via sugarcoated, dance-friendly grooves (“Everything Now”)? Go ahead, strike a pose.

“Can we just work it out / Scream and shout ’til we work it out?” Chassagne and Butler sang together on “Afterlife,” a song whose lyrics resonated with deeper meaning. Let the broader conversation begin.

So, would the leader of the band we had all come to see address the fact five people have come forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct ?

Review: Arcade Fire dazzles at Bell Centre, but questions remain Back to video

It’s not exactly the question you would choose to have in your head as you go to a concert, is it?

It’s a fair one, though, and it surely needed asking as Arcade Fire, arguably the most popular and beloved band to come out of Montreal, returned to the city for the final date of its We tour, the group’s first since Pitchfork’s report of the first four of those accusations ( there was a fifth last month ) that caused many longtime fans to wonder whether Win Butler is who they thought he was.

It’s not as if some at the Bell Centre on Saturday night were really demanding or expecting a full mea culpa — or, conversely, a passionate denial — from the stage. A simple acknowledgment would have sufficed. Dispiritingly, though, none was forthcoming. It seems in the brief gap between Pitchfork’s report and the start of the We tour, a decision was taken in the Arcade Fire camp: Don’t talk about it. And they didn’t.

Part of what makes this story so wrenching is Saturday’s concert was full of reminders of why this band has meant so much to so many — and still does, if the rapturous response of the 10,500-strong, multi-generational Bell Centre crowd was any indication. While every one of those attendees will have had reasons of their own for attending, clearly Montreal isn’t prepared to give up on this band.

Opening act Boukman Eksperyans had the challenge of starting its set when the crowd had only begun trickling in, and did as well as could be expected in the circumstances. A veteran eight-piece, genre-blending, spiritually and politically charged Haitian band, its album Kalfou Danjere is a masterpiece that has been awaiting broader discovery since its 1992 release. The awkward insertion of some heavy-handed metal-style guitar notwithstanding, they turned in an inspiring set. Even here, though, it was tough to ignore the elephant in the room: the band was on this tour, after all, because others — first Feist, then Beck — had decided they didn’t want to be, and everyone in the building knew it.

Arcade Fire has never been a band where you particularly notice individual instrumental contributions; rather, it’s an ensemble in the truest sense of the word, subsuming ego for the benefit of the collective sound, swapping instruments with dizzying glee, supporting the songs with nuance and force. The absence of Will Butler and his madcap stage presence was felt; Win’s younger brother, who left the band in March, will be remembered by many as the one who used to throw instruments straight up to implausible heights and catch them at the last possible instant. There was no such throwing of things on this night. Maybe it’s thought that the time for such youthful daredevilry has passed. Or maybe it’s just an insurance issue.

Full Screen is not supported on this browser version.

You may use a different browser or device to view this in full screen.

In a set that spanned the band’s career (song count by album: Funeral, five; Neon Bible, two; The Suburbs, three; Reflektor, three; Everything Now, two; We, five — and one other song, of which more later) and a performance that alternated between a main stage and a smaller, centrally placed round one, a surprise emerged, one that perhaps shouldn’t have been so surprising: Régine Chassagne was the star of the show. All night you felt she was the engine of the band — musically, emotionally — especially when the home stretch featured a devastating one-two punch of songs on which she takes the lead.

Haiti and Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) — one a lament for the country of her parents’ birth, the other an anthem for the generations that have grown up in the supposedly soulless North American suburbs — made the case for Arcade Fire as a great band, and for Chassagne as every bit her husband’s equal in importance. This was also when members of Boukman Eksperyans began coming back onstage to augment the band; ironically, the show ended up being enriched in ways it never could have been with either Feist or Beck opening.

Music isn’t experienced in a vacuum. As listeners, we develop a relationship with musicians, and just as in our everyday personal relationships, we expect to be afforded the respect of not being manipulated or deceived. Win Butler has shown a rare gift for writing empathetically about the young and vulnerable, so it’s genuinely upsetting to learn that, among other things, he has been sexting young female fans.

The subtext of Saturday’s concert was underlined, albeit without acknowledgment, during the encore. Dropping perhaps a few too many F-bombs in the process, Butler introduced Leonard Cohen’s Bird on the Wire with an anecdote about being a new arrival in Montreal and seeing Cohen randomly on the street one day. This, Butler said, was the moment when he knew he had come to the right city.

As he proceeded into the song, Cohen’s theme of regret and apology was placed in stark relief: these were the words of a man asking forgiveness for being “unkind” and “untrue.” With his wife sitting nearby playing a cello, and with thousands of people around him offering their support, it was all but impossible not to think Butler was addressing the song to her, and to the 10,500. But what about a certain five other people? Does “We” include everyone but them?

Win Butler needs to say a lot more.

With another album in the bag, Arcade Fire tour tickets are officially in high demand—and luckily, we’ve got all the tips for how to snag a discounted ticket (or two) to their show.

Arcade Fire 2022 World Tour Tickets

The Canadian indie rock group, which is helmed by married couple Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, released their critically acclaimed sixth studio album, WE,  on May 6, 2022. The record—the bulk of which was written before 2020—marks their last album featuring bandmember Will Butler before his departure from the band in 2021. “I left at the end of last year, after the new record was complete,” he tweeted in 2022. “There was no acute reason beyond that I’ve changed—and the band has changed—over the last almost 20 years. Time for new things.”

Will’s older brother and former bandmate, Win, addressed his amicable exit from the band during an interview with NME published in May 2022. “He’s our family and everyone in the band’s family, and he’s such a brilliant guy—he has so many things that just aren’t this band.” He added, “And on a human level, he’s got three young children, he just has so much other stuff to do. We’re fully supportive of his path, and can’t wait to see it.”

During their interview with NME, Arcade Fire bandleaders Win and Régine also opened up about their process behind making the new album. “I think when we were making these songs, we weren’t sure what world we were making it for,” Win shared. “There’s so many precarious things in the world and so much to have anxiety about, but I’ve been trying to really appreciate these moments when I’m in them. When the world is a beautiful place, I’m trying to allow myself to appreciate it in a way that I wouldn’t have before.”

For fans of Arcade Fire, there is perhaps no better moment to appreciate than getting to see the band live in concert. Of course, you’ll have to have tickets first! For everything there is to know about Arcade Fire’s 2022 tour—including the best way to get discounted Arcade Fire tickets—keep on reading ahead.

Job done … Arcade Fire.

Arcade Fire: We review – goodbye cod reggae, hello stadium singalongs

(Columbia) After a weak 2017 predecessor, the band’s new album returns to well-trodden territory. Its peevish lyrics are irritating, but it should avert a slide down festival bills

O n their 2005 Vertigo tour, U2 came on stage to the strains of Arcade Fire ’s Wake Up. It felt like an act of benediction on the part of stadium rock’s undisputed kings, a public equivalent of the fabled “Bono talk” in which U2’s frontman is reputed to approach young bands and offer congratulations and advice in a welcome-to-the-board-of-directors style. Here was a band made of similar stuff to early 80s U2 – born out of alternative rock, but with ambitions far beyond it; socially conscious; apparently powered by religious or quasi-religious fervour – and capable of doing what U2 did commercially by the end of the 80s.

Arcade Fire clearly weren’t averse to the idea. They dealt almost exclusively in grand statements with anthemic songs frequently divided into multiple parts, big sounds and spectacular shows. The bigger they got – awards, arena gig livecasts directed by Terry Gilliam , albums entering the charts at No 1 – the more their ambitions adjusted accordingly: 2013’s Reflektor was an 85-minute double album, inspired by Kierkegaard and featuring a guest appearance from David Bowie, accompanied by a feature-length making-of documentary and their own US TV special.

The artwork for We.

Then their ascent went drastically off-piste with 2017’s Everything Now , a state-of-the-world address issued in 22 different vinyl versions. It was preceded by an ostensibly satirical promotional campaign that was crushingly unfunny – overdoing the joke, as the humourless are wont to do, it seemed to go on for about five years – the reviews were bad, US sales faltered. Five years on, we find Arcade Fire reclaiming lost ground. Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich is on board, along with Father John Misty, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow and Peter Gabriel. Thankfully, they’ve dramatically reined in the musical experimentation of Everything Now. If you think it’s counterintuitive to praise an artist for being less ambitious, you evidently didn’t hear the results of that ambition last time around: let’s just whisper the words “cod reggae” and “rock artist trying to rap” and leave it there.

In its place is some of Arcade Fire’s most straightforward music to date, reliant on tried-and-tested techniques for rousing vast crowds: chugging synthy pop-rock somewhere between the balls-out commercialism of the Killers and the more opaque approach of the War on Drugs (Age of Anxiety I, The Lightning I, II); bass drum-thumping folky singalong on Unconditional I (Lookout Kid). There’s also that venerable 21st-century standby, a ballad that begins on solitary piano evocative of the Beatles’ Hey Jude or John Lennon’s Imagine and gradually swells into string-laden, air-punching territory. It’s very well-trodden territory, but the episodic, nine-minute End of the Empire I-IV pushes it to a new level, borrowing not just the ambience of Imagine, but the melody of its opening line – a ballsy move given the litigious times we live in.

There are a couple of relative curveballs – the sparkly dance-pop of Age of Anxiety II (Rabbit Hole) and Unconditional II (Race And Religion) are pretty well done. The piano hook on Age of Anxiety I is genuinely hooky, the dramatic increase in tempo midway through The Lightning I, II authentically exciting. But it also feels oddly functional rather than head-spinning: new material that’s enough to hold an audience’s interest in between the hits. In fairness, it’s an improvement on Everything Now, an album that was packed with new material almost guaranteed to get the audience fighting for the exits.

The one thing that hasn’t been improved since last time is the lyrics, which bullishly ignore the theory that Arcade Fire are at their best when focusing on the small-scale and personal – an appealing contrast to a widescreen musical approach. Instead they stick fast to the blueprint of Everything Now, an album that had worked out that the internet has a bad side and kept telling you about it in peevish, think-about-it-yeah? terms. Once more, everything appears to have been written in a style that evokes either a terrible amateur theatre troupe or a ramalama punk band making a point about society. “Rabbit hole, plastic soul… born into the abyss, new phone, who’s this?” runs Age of Anxiety II (Rabbit Hole). “I unsubscribe, this ain’t no way of life, I don’t believe the hype … fuck season five,” offers End of the Empire I-IV. Even Unconditional I (Lookout Kid), a sweet meditation on parenthood and the album’s one example of the small-scale approach – “a lifetime of skinned knees and heartbreak comes so easily” – is blighted by a burst of hectoring cobblers about how you can’t rock without roll and there’s no God without soul.

Still, no one ever kept a stadium audience rapt with the oblique subtlety of their wordplay. If We isn’t a return to the standards Arcade Fire reached on their debut album Funeral or 2010’s The Suburbs, it’s an improvement on its predecessor, and quite possibly enough to avert a slow slide down the festival bills. Those, you suspect, may have been its objectives, in which case: job done.

This week Alexis listened to

Crayon – Ithinkso Lo-fi and ragged take on a two-step garage beat, that unexpectedly turns midway through into something noticeably jazz-influenced. Intriguing.

Feist opens up about exiting Arcade Fire's 2022 tour: "I can't avoid my responsibility here"

Feist briefly toured with arcade fire in 2022 but left when frontman win butler faced allegations of sexual misconduct.

Leslie Feist

After exiting Arcade Fire’s 2022 tour in the wake of several sexual assault allegations against frontman Win Butler, opening act Leslie Feist is publicly opening up  about the difficulty of the decision for the first time .

Related Content

“I was having an out-of-body experience,” Feist tells The Irish Times . “Not to mention, I had brought all of these new songs. I thought, ‘Okay, maybe I’ll go do this tour and workshop how to play these songs in a bigger context.’”

Shortly after Arcade Fire kicked off their tour promoting the album WE , Pitchfork detailed several allegations of sexual assault from young women, who allege Butler continuously crossed boundaries and used his celebrity status to assert power over them. Feist opened for two shows in Dublin, donating all merch profits to Women’s Aid Dublin, before departing the tour altogether.

“It took me until the second show where all of the practical discomfort of having to dismantle this crazy machine and fold it back up and lose what I had invested in being there [on tour].… The whole thing was made so clear to me. I couldn’t continue,” Feist continues. “It was like, actually, no... ‘I can’t avoid my responsibility here.’ Not to mention every word that came out of my mouth, I was hearing through an ear that wasn’t my own. I was hearing how twisted and skewed... In the context they were in, the songs weren’t safe. And neither was I. It was deeply difficult.”

Feist is set to release her newest record, Multitudes, on April 14. Soon after, she’ll set out on a headlining tour through the States and Canada. Ahead of the album’s release—her first since 2017's Pleasure —Feist has shared singles “Borrow Trouble,” “In Lightning,” “Love Who We Are Meant To,” and “Hiding Out In The Open.”

Arcade Fire returns to Montreal for first time since sexual assault allegations

Arcade Fire returns to the Bell Centre tonight.

That line would typically be ended with an exclamation point, but for the local band's first show in Montreal since headlining Osheaga in July, the homecoming is less of a triumphant return this time.

It is the last show of the band's "We" tour and the first since the American music publication Pitchfork's story on the sexual misconduct allegations against frontman Win Butler by multiple people.

If ticket prices are any indication, the band is not commanding the demand it once did.

The ticket reseller Stubhub had tickets on sale for as low as $19 on Saturday morning. Premium seats are selling for as low as $52 with general admission floor seats as low as $145.

Evenko has tickets on its site in almost all sections, including general admission on the floor for $166.

People are basically giving away their @arcadefire tickets for tomorrow's #Montreal show. Screenshot from just now on @StubHub . GA floor? $50 on Stubhub or $160 on Evenko's website. Not sure I've ever seen a $10 bell centre ticket, even when the Habs were at their shittiest. pic.twitter.com/wV8cAQ9HaM — Dave Kaufman (@TheKaufmanShow) December 2, 2022

Response on social media has been mixed with some fans posting pictures of packed shows in Toronto on Friday night, while others posted about the vibe being low.

"Okay so I bought arcade fire tickets before they got 'cancelled' - this show is so depressing as an actual fan," wrote one former fan. "Low energy. Low attendance. No one's into it. It's literally depressing."

Other Twitter users replied to the user's post with pictures of fans on the floor enjoying the show.

okay so I bought arcade fire tickets before they got "cancelled" - this show is so depressing as an actual fan. low energy. low attendance. no one's into it. it's literally depressing. — Julian (@JulianStaniewsk) December 3, 2022

"Sick of the pile-on," wrote one Twitter user. "Are people cancelling everyone? The show was packed and amazing."

I agree. Sick of the pile-on. Are people cancelling everyone. The show was packed and amazing. People harping about empty rafter seats. ALLEGATIONS AND CANCELLATIONS

The Pitchfork article in August recounted how three young women between 18 and 23 alleged Butler sent unsolicited and explicit texts and photos and aggressively pursued them between 2016 and 2020.

A gender-fluid person who was 21 alleged Butler sexually assaulted them in 2015.

Butler was in his late 30s at the time and married to bandmate Regine Chassagne. The couple had a son in 2013.

Butler released a lengthy statement admitting to "consensual relationships" outside of his marriage.

Grammy-winning artist Beck was on the concert ticket for the North American leg of Arcade Fire's tour but backed out in October.

Beck made no comment about his reasons for leaving the tour.

Award-winning Canadian singer/songwriter Leslie Fiest also left the tour due to the allegations.

“I’ve always written songs to name my own subtle difficulties, aspire to my best self, and claim responsibility when I need to,” said Feist in a tweet in September. “And I’m claiming my responsibility now and going home.”
