Beck Drops Off Arcade Fire’s Tour Amid Win Butler Sexual Misconduct Allegations

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Beck has dropped off the Arcade Fire ’s upcoming North American tour, where the singer was to serve as opening act, amid accusations of sexual misconduct against the band’s frontman Win Butler .

Ticket buyers were informed of the change via email Friday, “Beck is unfortunately no longer able to join Arcade Fire on their upcoming North American tour.” Taking his place will be Boukman Eksperyans,” the Haitian band that recently opened for Arcade Fire on their European leg.

No explanation for Beck’s exit was provided, and reps for both Arcade Fire and Beck did not comment to Rolling Stone . As of Saturday morning, the shows – slated to begin Oct. 27 in Washington, D.C. – were removed from tour section of Beck’s website.

After opening the first two shows of that tour, Feist explained her decision to depart in a lengthy statement on social media, revealing that she first learned about the accusations against Butler after she and her band had already traveled to Europe for the tour. Despite the allegations, Feist opened the tour’s first gig in Dublin but donated proceeds from merch sales to a local women’s aid organization.

“This has ignited a conversation that is bigger than me, it’s bigger than my songs and it’s certainly bigger than any rock and roll tour,” Feist wrote. “To stay on tour would symbolize I was either defending or ignoring the harm caused by Win Butler and to leave would imply I was the judge and jury.”

In August, multiple women came forward in a  Pitchfork  report that detailed Butler’s alleged sexual misconduct, the accusations of which ranged from sexual assault to unsolicited sexting. While Butler admitted to the extramarital affairs, he responded that they were all “consensual.” “I vehemently deny any suggestion that I forced myself on a woman or demanded sexual favors. That simply, and unequivocally, never happened,” Butler wrote.

Butler’s wife and bandmate Regine Chassagne said in a separate statement, “Win is my soulmate, my songwriting partner, my husband, the father of my beautiful boy. He has been my partner in life and in music for 20 years. And for all of the love in our lives, I have also watched him suffer through immense pain… I know what is in his heart, and I know he has never, and would never, touch a woman without her consent and I am certain he never did. He has lost his way and he has found his way back.”

Beck performing

For Beck, touring with Arcade Fire is no longer where it’s at.

The alt-rock star has dropped out of supporting the Canadian band on the US leg of its “We” trek two weeks before it’s due to start on Oct. 27.

Although Beck didn’t give a reason why he was quitting the tour, he is the second artist to bail on Arcade Fire following Feist, who cited the sexual misconduct allegations against the group’s lead singer, Win Butler, as her reason for leaving the European leg in September.

“I can’t continue,” the “I Feel It All” singer wrote on Twitter about her “incredibly difficult” decision to split from her fellow Canadians on tour.

“To stay on tour would symbolize I was either defending or ignoring the harm caused by Win Butler and to leave would imply I was the judge and jury,” she wrote. “I was never here to stand for or with Arcade Fire — I was here to stand on my own two feet on a stage.”

Arcade Fire's Win Butler

In a Pitchfork report published in August, three women accused Butler of sexual misconduct , while a fourth woman accused him of sexual assault. The “Ready to Start” singer has denied the accusations.

The Arcade Fire and Beck double bill was a potent pairing of two Album of the Year Grammy winners. Arcade Fire won for “The Suburbs” in 2011, while Beck triumphed for “Morning Phase” in 2015.

Ticket buyers were notified in an email that Beck was “unfortunately no longer able to join Arcade Fire on their upcoming North American tour. Taking his place will be Boukman Eksperyans.”

Win Butler

But  in terms of both popularity acclaim, the Haitian band is a big step down from Beck, who has won eight Grammys to go along with hits such as “Where It’s At” and “Devils Haircut.” So it’s the audience who is the real “Loser” here.

“Our marriage has, in the past, been more unconventional than some,” he wrote. “I have connected with people in person, at shows, and through social media, and I have shared messages of which I am not proud. Most importantly, every single one of these interactions has been mutual and always between consenting adults. It is deeply revisionist, and frankly just wrong, for anyone to suggest otherwise.”

“I have never touched a woman against her will, and any implication that I have is simply false,” he continued. “I vehemently deny any suggestion that I forced myself on a woman or demanded sexual favors. That simply, and unequivocally, never happened.”

“While these relationships were all consensual, I am very sorry to anyone who I have hurt with my behavior,” he added. “Life is filled with tremendous pain and error, and I never want to be part of causing someone else’s pain.”

arcade fire opening act drops out exit

Arcade Fire is having trouble keeping name acts in the opening slots for its arena tours. Beck has now dropped out of his position as the opener for the group’s U.S. tour, without any explanation so far.

In an email sent to ticket buyers, Beck was described only as “unfortunately no longer able to join Arcade Fire on their upcoming North American tour. Taking his place will be Boukman Eksperyans,” described as a Grammy-nominated Haitian roots band.

Contacted by Variety , Beck’s reps declined to comment on his bowing out.

Popular on Variety

“Him opening was a large part of the reason I shelled out for excellent seats,” said one user in a Reddit thread about Beck dropping out. “I couldn’t be less interested in his replacement. This is what I get for jumping on tickets day 1. People are gonna be able to score em on the resale market for like $40.”

Beck was slated to performing acoustically and not doing the kind of full band set he would as a headliner, however.

As this article was being published, the dates remained listed on Beck’s website, showing him starting the Arcade Fire tour Oct. 27 in Washington, D.C., and continuing for 18 concerts with the group, wrapping up Dec. 1 in Toronto. Gigs affected along the way include a Nov. 4 show at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and a two-night stand at L.A.’s Kia Forum Nov. 16-17. Six of the shows are listed as sellouts.

Feist continued, “I’m imperfect and I will navigate this decision imperfectly, but what I’m sure of is the best way to take care of my band and crew and my family is to distance myself from this tour, not this conversation. The last two nights on stage, my songs made this decision for me. Hearing them through this lens was incongruous with what I’ve worked to clarify for myself through my whole career . .. This has been incredibly difficult for me and I can only imagine how much more difficult it’s been for the people who came forward (with their experiences with Butler). More than anything! Wish healing to those involved.”

In the  Pitchfork article, which opened up a chasm between Arcade Fire fans who stood behind Butler and those who felt they no longer could, the band leader was accused of sexual misconduct by four people. Three women alleged encounters that were “inappropriate given the gaps in age, power dynamics, and context in which they occurred,” while a fourth person, who is gender-fluid, alleged that Butler sexually assaulted them twice in 2015.

In response, Butler issued a statement saying that all of the encounters with the individuals in the article were consensual, while acknowledging “poor judgment, and mistakes I have made. … Every single one of these interactions has been mutual and always between consenting adults. It is deeply revisionist, and frankly just wrong, for anyone to suggest otherwise. … I fucked up, and while not an excuse, I will continue to look forward and heal what can be healed, and learn from past experiences. I can do better and I will do better.”

Beck’s most recent appearance was a surprise solo-acoustic set at L.A.’s Largo this week, appearing at a Judd Apatow-hosted benefit with Loudon Wainwright III, Christopher Guest and Michael McKean.

Live Nation has confirmed American musician Beck will no longer be opening for the North American leg of Arcade Fire's We tour, which begins at the end of October.

A media spokesperson for the entertainment company did not provide a reason for Beck's cancellation, and said the opener will instead be Haitian band Boukman Eksperyans.

Canadian musician Leslie Feist announced in early September that she was leaving Arcade Fire's tour after sexual misconduct allegations were made against lead singer Win Butler.

Feist had been booked as opening act for the European leg of the Montreal band's latest tour, which kicked off in Dublin at the end of August.

The concerts went ahead just days after U.S. music publication Pitchfork ran an article in late August containing allegations Butler had inappropriate sexual interactions with four people.

In a statement, Butler has denied the allegations, and said all encounters took place between consenting adults and he never touched a woman against her will or demanded sexual favours.

Beck’s departure arrives amidst swirling sexual misconduct allegations against Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler. In an extensive Pitchfork report on the accusations published on August 27, three women described having “sexual interactions with Butler that they came to feel were inappropriate given the gaps in age, power dynamics, and context in which they occurred.” A fourth, gender-fluid individual has accused Butler of sexually assaulting them two separate times in 2015.

For his own part, Butler has denied allegations of sexual misconduct, although in a statement shared with Pitchfork he admits to having “consensual relationships” outside his marriage to bandmate Régine Chassagne .

“I have connected with people in person, at shows, and through social media, and I have shared messages of which I am not proud,” Butler shared in the statement. “Most importantly, every single one of these interactions has been mutual and always between consenting adults. It is deeply revisionist, and frankly just wrong, for anyone to suggest otherwise.”

Despite Butler’s denial, Beck is not the first artist to distance themselves from Arcade Fire or the ensuing tour. Days after the allegations came to light in late August, singer-songwriter Feist departed an opener slot with the group after performing with them twice in Dublin. In a long statement explaining her choice to step away, Feist emphasized that her exiting the tour did not mean she was exiting the conversation about Butler’s behavior.

“I’m imperfect and I will navigate this decision imperfectly, but what I’m sure of is the best way to take care of my band and crew and my family is to distance myself from this tour, not this conversation,” Feist wrote. “I’m claiming my responsibility now and going home.”

Beck No Longer Opening for Arcade Fire on 2022 North American Tour

By Allison Hussey

Beck

Beck will no longer open for Arcade Fire on their upcoming North American tour in support of WE . Instead, the Hatian band Boukman Eksperyans will be opening for Arcade Fire. The first show on the tour is set for Friday, October 28, in Washington, D.C. Representatives for Arcade Fire and Beck offered no comment when reached by Pitchfork.

Arcade Fire began their tour in Ireland in August, just a few days after allegations of sexual misconduct were made against frontman Win Butler. (Butler has maintained that all of the alleged interactions were consensual.) Feist had been scheduled to open for Arcade Fire in Europe, but she left the tour after playing two concerts, citing the allegations against Butler. Arcade Fire responded, “We are very sorry to see Leslie [Feist] go home, but completely understand and respect her decision.” Arcade Fire then enlisted Boukman Eksperyans to open the European shows.

Beck has become the latest artist to drop off the Arcade Fire tour. Today, he withdrew as the opening act after appearing in that capacity on the group’s European leg.

His decision comes just before the start of Arcade Fire’s North American tour, which begins in Washington, DC later this month.

Beck cancels from arcade fire's troubled minneapolis concert, but no refunds offered.

Even before Arcade Fire's frontman Win Butler was accused of sexual misconduct toward young women in an extensive news report posted in late August, many Twin Cities fans noted on social media that opening act Beck was the main draw for them to buy tickets to the two Grammy-winning rock acts' joint concert at the Armory on Nov. 13.

Now Beck has dropped out, Butler's alleged misbehavior has been outed, and Beck fans are out of luck, it seems.

Live Nation representatives confirmed that ticket refunds are not being offered to the Minneapolis concert, despite news over the weekend that Beck had dropped off the tour.

The multi-platinum "Loser" and "Where It's At" hitmaker did not give any reason for quitting the 13-city North American tour, which is scheduled to kick off Oct. 28 in Washington, D.C. Arcade Fire also did not offer any comment on him bailing. Their European tour opener, Feist, also pulled out last month.

News of Beck's cancellation was sent to ticketholders via e-mail, which simply said he "is no longer able to perform," and that he will be replaced by Boukman Eksperyans , a veteran sociopolitical rock band from Haiti.

Boukman Eksperyans also took over opening duties in Europe from Feist, who posted a lengthy statement explaining why she pulled out of the tour: "The best way to take care of my band and crew and my family is to distance myself from this tour, not this conversation," she said.

Butler has sternly denied the allegations — unwanted sexual advances, coercion and other manipulative behavior — made against him by four women in the late August report by music news site Pitchfork, including some from a woman who was only 18 at the time of their interaction.

"I vehemently deny any suggestion that I forced myself on a woman or demanded sexual favors. That simply, and unequivocally, never happened," the singer, who is 42 and married to his bandmate Régine Chassagne, said in a statement.

In Minneapolis, a representative for the Armory said ticket-refund policies are entirely up to Live Nation as the promoter of the show. A Live Nation representative pointed to their policy to not offer refunds when opening acts cancel; just headliners.

Tickets to the Armory show — which started at $57 for general-admission floor access when it was announced in May — look to be nearly sold-out except for $200 VIP options. Beck was to play an acoustic set in the opening slot and not his typical high-energy electric performance.

Beck Drops Out of Arcade Fire Tour Amid Butler Accusations

Beck became the second performer to withdraw as the opening act of Arcade Fire’s We tour. After playing the group’s European leg, Beck decided to drop out of the band’s North American tour, which begins on October 27 in Washington, DC.

The withdrawal by the singer was confirmed by Live Nation, and in an email sent to ticket holders, Beck was told to “unfortunately no longer be able to join Arcade Fire on their upcoming North American tour. Taking his place will be Boukman Eksperyans,” a Grammy-nominated Haitian roots band.

Early September Canadian musician Leslie Feist who was performing as opening act for the band left the tour due to the sexual misconduct allegations against Arcade Fire’s front man Win Butler featured in an article on Pitchfork .

“To stay on tour would symbolize I was either defending or ignoring the harm caused by Win Butler and to leave would imply I was the judge and jury,” Feist wrote in her post back then. “It can be a lonely road to make sense of ill treatment. I can’t solve that by quitting, and I can’t solve it by staying. But I can’t continue,” she concluded.

In response, Arcade Fire said in a statement, “We are very sorry to see Leslie go home but completely understand and respect her decision.”

The article dated to late August featured claims and interviews by four people “who made allegations of sexual interactions with Butler that they came to feel were inappropriate given the gaps in age, power dynamics, and context in which they occurred.”

In his statement to Pitchfork, Butler acknowledged having sexual interactions with each of the four people, but maintained that they were consensual, and not initiated by him. “I fucked up, and while not an excuse, I will continue to look forward and heal what can be healed, and learn from past experiences. I can do better and I will do better,” he wrote.

Neither Beck nor Live Nation made an explanation regarding the reason for the artist’s dropping out of the tour.

Arcade Fire’s North American Tour starts from The Anthem, Washington, DC, on October 27 and includes some stops in Brooklyn, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and more, then wraps in Canada on December 3 after visiting Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.

Beck backs out of North American leg of Arcade Fire 'We' tour

Live Nation has confirmed that American musician Beck will no longer be opening for the North American leg of Arcade Fire's “We” tour, which begins at the end of October.

A media spokesperson for the entertainment company did not provide a reason for Beck's cancellation, and says the opener will instead be Haitian band Boukman Eksperyans.

Canadian musician Leslie Feist announced in early September that she was leaving Arcade Fire's tour after sexual misconduct allegations were made against lead singer Win Butler.

Feist had been booked as the opening act for the European leg of the band's latest tour, which kicked off in Dublin at the end of August.

The concerts went ahead just days after U.S. music publication Pitchfork ran an article in late August containing allegations that Butler had inappropriate sexual interactions with four people.

In a statement, Butler denied the allegations and said all encounters took place between consenting adults and that he never touched a woman against her will or demanded sexual favours.

The band is set to play Washington, D.C. on Oct. 27, and make stops in Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto before playing their last date this year in Montreal on Dec. 3.

Fans have waited a long time for this album, but sadly it also marks the departure of long-time member Win Butler, who wrote on Twitter: “Hi friends- I’ve left Arcade Fire. I left at the end of last year after the new record was complete. There was no acute reason beyond that I’ve changed- and the band has changed – over the last almost 20 years. Time for new things.”

The Indie-dance-rock, Canadian band Arcade Fire is husband and wife Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, alongside Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara.
