“There is something about flying down narrow alleys of mangrove trees that is just a rush. I could never get tired of it. The guides always give more than just a ride. You learn so much about the Everglades and the total ecosystem that it is. We most certainly will be back!

—C. from Florida

“The mangrove tour was so much fun! We saw a family of dolphins swimming along the boat, several alligators, and a few fish jumping out of the water. Riding through the mangroves was beautiful and a fun way to see the Everglades. I would recommend to anyone.”

—J. from Massachusetts

“We really enjoyed seeing the alligators. The captain of the airboat gave a lot of information about the Everglades and habitat. The addition of the two-way headsets let us all communicate during the tour. This was really a highlight of having friends down visiting us new Florida residents. Plan to bring other guests."

—K. from Florida

“We did the combo package and it was amazing! Great way to experience all 3 ways to 'see' the Everglades! Would highly recommend. All the captains for each segment were fantastic! Had a great time!"

A Short Guide To Florida Airboat Adventures

Thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike will enjoy the adventure and excitement of an airboat ride.  Views of alligators, manatees, turtles, wading birds, osprey, and more are possible while cruising in an airboat on the waterways of Central Florida.

This guide offers an introduction to the what, why, and how of booking an airboat tour as well as some of the best airboat rides near Daytona Beach .

What is an Airboat?

Airboat Rides Near Daytona Beach

Airboats have a flat bottomed hull and are powered by a giant fan that sits on the back of the stern instead of the traditional underwater motor. This type of boat is particularly useful in low lying swamp areas. There is no motor prop below the waterline to get stuck in the weeds and muck of shallow water.

Another advantage of this type of watercraft is that the passengers sit up high on the boat’s platform which allows for excellent wildlife viewing. Some of the larger airboats even have stadium seating, so passengers in the back row still have a great view.

Some airboat aficionados like the ride for the thrill. As you skim across the water at high speed, you will experience a one-of-a-kind adventure that is unique to southern wetlands.

Who Can Go on an Airboat Ride?

Airboat Rides Near Daytona Beach

Airboat rides are a high family-friendly activity almost anyone can enjoy. The bench-like seating offers a comfortable ride for all passengers.

Kids especially love the thrill of zipping about on the water while watching the scenery zoom by. It’s not too hard for little ones to imagine themselves as the main character in their action-adventure movie as they head downriver through the exotic Florida landscape.

If your children are fascinated with alligators, an airboat ride is an excellent opportunity for them to see one of these fantastic animals in their natural environment.

What Equipment is Needed?

Airboat Rides Near Daytona Beach

You’ll want to plan on bringing a few things along on your airboat ride to ensure the best trip possible. As with most outdoor activities in Florida, make sure to pack protective sun gear, including sunscreen and sunglasses. You may also want to bring a hat to protect your face from the sun. Keep in mind that it will be windy as the boat cruises at top speed, so a tight-fitting cap that is easy to hold, bandana, or a hat with a chin strap will work best.

If you are sensitive to wind or you are traveling during the colder months, a long-sleeved shirt or jacket will keep you cozy if the temperature drops. You will also want to bring insect repellant, just in case.

Make sure to take your camera, video camera, or binoculars with you as well. You won’t want to miss getting that awesome gator shot or capture of any of the other thrilling wildlife encounters you may see during the trip. Also, when out on the water, it’s always a good idea to have a leash or wrist strap attached to your camera.

Some rental companies provide ear protection and/or lifejackets for young passengers. You may want to contact the company ahead of time to double-check. If not, riders with sensitive ears may want to bring a pair of earplugs or noise-canceling headphones.

Our high-tech headsets allow everyone to talk to one another during the entire ride. Take a load off your feet and escape to Florida’s beautiful swamp and wildlife adventure!

Small, 6 passenger boat Yep, this is the number one reason… most people, (when they realize they have a choice) just don’t want to be on a large air boat with 20 other people. They tell us “What if we get stuck in the middle of the boat? We won’t be able to see anything!”

High Tech Headsets Our headsets with microphones allow you to talk to us the entire time – so ask us questions and help spot wildlife — you’ll absolutely love this feature that no other airboat ride company offers.

Longer trip times Many, many passengers want the “real deal” experience, to go where only the locals go… and our longer 90 minute and 2 hour airboat rides are the only ones out there!

1 Hour Airboat Tour

1-hour "private" airboat tour, group rates, testimonials.

We had a wonderful airboat ride tour. We saw a lot of alligators, learned some history and experienced all the capabilities of the air boat on land on water and through grass. We saw the awesome alligator infested bald Cedarwoods, Infested with alligators just like in the eerie movies. Chelsea was a great hostess, and a wonderful airboat operator. I highly recommend this tour. This tour was the highlight of our trip to Orlando area.

What a thrilling adventure !! We saw many large gators, beautiful birds and breathtaking scenery. Chelsea answered our calls and responded back promptly. She made it such a fun trip and stopped a few times to explain the history of the area and the animals. Would definitely highly recommend this trip to everyone. I can check that off my bucket list. Awesome!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our first airboat ride. Chelsea was a great guide, she gave us a lot of background information and pointed out lots of gators, and showed us a gator nursery that she had been watching herself, we were able to see lots of baby gators. If we spotted a gator, she would turn the boat around and try to catch them again for us. We had such a great time, that we will be back.

With Over 10,000 Reviews Online, We’re The Most Talked About Airboat Tour Anywhere In The World!

First trip to Florida and this was one of my things to go too. Awesome place for Swap Tours. Great people at the front office with a smile as you walk in. Captain Jim is the man. Very likable and great personality! We got to see an 8’ alligator which was pretty cool. Great job guys!

This was an absolutely great airboat tour. AJ was our guide, who was informative and humorous too! I had a keen interest in birding and he pointed out about 10+ species of birds including 4 bald eagles. We saw about 5-10 alligators during our visit. Would visit again & highly recommend!

Wild Willys was a great Airboat ride through the marshes. Saw several gators and lots of wildlife. The guide was knowledgable about the area and very friendly. The people inside were also very friendly and knowledgable. Definitely recommend.

The one-hour airboat ride was perfect. We saw a variety of wildlife. The speed of the boat (what I really came for) was good, some fast times, some slow times. I chose the 9am time to avoid the sun and heat, and that was perfect too. I highly recommend Wild Willy's.

Testimonials

We had so much fun! The staff was great! Wes was so passionate and informative. Sherri was so sweet and let us walk Pickles! (Thanks to Chris for wrangling Pickles for us!) We had a wonderful time and plan on being back!

This is the only place that makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. I’ve always been fascinated by alligators so I think this place is awesome! Can’t wait to go back for a 3rd time! My son was just a baby last year but I think he’d really enjoy it now so I’m really looking forward to it!

Today I visited Alligator Alley. I am seven years old, and I had so much fun. I came home and looked at the website. I think that your park is a great place, and I decided that I would like to work there one day. I love Captain Crunch! He and the Colonel and Big Moe were my favorites!

Just wanted to say that you guys have a fantastic place! My family and I enjoyed our visit. There were so many great things. It was very helpful having Evan around.

It was an experience we will never forget and we keep talking about to others. It is really nice to go to places where you can interact with animals but also have a friendly and knowledgable staff.

WHAT TO EXPECT & WHAT TO BRING

RESERVATIONS AND TIME FRAMES

It’s a brand new year and BABY…. “It’s really NOT so cold outside” in Florida that is! We are headed through that one little stretch leading to President’s Day which is February 15, and that usually ushers in SPRING BREAK and the beginning of my busy season! The water level is dropping, and the air is brisk! The birds are partying as wade pools only inches deep give way to the bounty of small fry and crustaceans that these birds gorge on by the THOUSANDS!! Then there’s everyone’s favorite- THE ALLIGATOR which is also moving towards mating season in April and they are EVERYWHERE! Less water= less territory and higher concentrations. Every year around March, people are astounded by what they see as these animals line the shores by the hundreds! All I can say is, words don’t do it justice!

Caimans are at the new Daytona aquarium: How do they differ from alligators and crocodiles?

O ne of the main attractions at the new Daytona Aquarium & Rainforest Adventure is the Reptile Den, where guests can see an American alligator swimming in its enclosure.

But just a few feet away, there is another animal enclosure housing a creature very similar to an alligator: A caiman.

Caimans, despite their similarities and the fact they are related alligators and crocodiles, are their own species.

Are caimans in the U.S.?

The reptile, which is not native to the United States, is part of the same family as the well-known American alligator and American crocodile and is easily mistaken for both.

If you are planning a visit to the aquarium or are wondering what makes caimans different, here's what you need to know.

Gators vs. Crocs: Crocodiles and alligators look alike, but here are the differences between the two reptiles

What are caimans?

Caimans are reptiles, members of the Alligatoridae family, who greatly resemble other species who belong to the same family, such as alligators and crocodiles.

They are found only in Central and South America, “widely distributed throughout the Amazon River basin,” according to Amazon Aid — a Virginia-based nonprofit organization.

“Consistent with the caiman’s proclivity for wet environments, its range overlaps much of the Amazon basin across Brazil and bordering countries.”

The largest caiman species, the Black caiman, can reach up to 15 feet from tail to snout. The smallest species is the Cuvier’s dwarf caiman — females can reach up to 4 feet and males up to 5 feet.

14-foot beast in Pinellas: How big are the alligators in Volusia-Flagler?

They typically live “along riverbanks and streams, but they especially thrive in floodplain lakes, wetlands and other inundated habitats with dense vegetation cover,” according to Amazon Aid.

Is a caiman a crocodile or an alligator?

The three species are part of the same order, Crocodylia, which makes all three crocodilians.

Despite their overall similar appearance, caimans have their own differences.

“Alligators have a broad, rounded snout, while crocodiles have a longer, more pointed snout. Caimans have a snout that is somewhere in between the two,” according to American Oceans .

One of the easiest ways to distinguish alligators from crocodiles is by looking at their snouts.

“Alligators have a broad, rounded snout that is U-shaped when viewed from the front,” while crocodiles “have a more V-shaped snout that is longer and narrower than an alligator’s.”

A caiman’s snout is somewhere in between, “with a more pointed snout than an alligator but not as narrow as a crocodile’s,” according to American Oceans.

The caiman’s skin is also somewhat of a cross between the two: Crocodiles have rough skin with more pronounced bony plates, while alligators have smoother, less bony skin, according to American Oceans.

Aquarium exhibits: Heading to Daytona Aquarium & Rainforest Adventure? Don't miss these exhibits.

“The coloration of (a caiman’s) skin can vary depending on the species, habitat and age of the animal.”

Are there caimans in Florida?

Caimans are not a native species in Florida, but some are known to inhabit parts of the Everglades in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

"Following protective legislation to prohibit trade in American alligators in the early 1950s, the number of imported caimans into the United States as pets markedly increased,” according to the University of Florida’s “The Croc Docs.”

Caimans there “occupy the same habitat as our native alligators and crocodiles, competing for food and other resources,” preying “upon birds, small mammals, fish and other reptiles, posing a threat to native wildlife.”

“Caiman are native to Central and South America, and their distribution in Florida will probably remain confined to South Florida because they cannot tolerate cold temperatures,” according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Seeing more stories of gators in unlikely places? Here's a recap of the latest alligator affairs in Florida

alligator tours near daytona beach

Floridians and those scrolling through social media anytime this month have yet to say " see ya later, alligator ."

Since the start of this month, gators have dominated headlines for being in scary situations , from inside kitchens to blocking traffic on Air Force bases.

You might be thinking "duh, it's Florida, there's obviously going to be an alligator story from time to time," which is fair. The reptiles are found in all 67 of Florida's counties, lurking in most of our waterways throughout the state .

However, there might be more to the multiple encounters.

Why am I seeing more alligators? Their mating season has started

Courtship between alligators begins in early April. The large reptiles are highly aggressive  during this time, according to  WorldClassWildlifeRemoval.com.

Mating happens in May or June, followed by the females building a nest and laying 32 to 46 eggs in late June or early July. Eggs generally hatch in late August or early September.

Over the last 10 years, Florida has averaged eight unprovoked bites per year that are serious enough to require professional medical treatment, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission .

"The likelihood of a Florida resident being seriously injured during an unprovoked alligator incident in Florida is roughly only one in 3.1 million. From 1948 to 2022, 453 unprovoked bite incidents have occurred in Florida; 26 of these bites resulted in human fatalities."

Here are some of the most recent situations these large reptiles have found themselves in:

'Dinosaur-like' alligator marches down Florida golf course

A Florida golfer caught video of a roughly 10-foot alligator marching on the pristine golf course grass in Rotonda West, Florida.

Resident Chris Hulback captured the moment on video, finding fascination in the bow-legged creature making his way from one pond to another.

"In Southwest Florida especially, we are living amongst dinosaurs when we see them that big." Hulback told USA TODAY in an interview Monday. "There's something really fun about it."

8-foot gator crawls into woman's kitchen in Venice

Mary Hollenback of Venice, told USA TODAY that she thought it was "a neighbor accidentally coming in her house when the screen door rattled" back in March.

"So I come around the corner expecting to tell somebody they were in the wrong place," she said in an interview. "And, lo and behold, there's an alligator at my front door!"

The FWC confirmed in a statement shared with USA TODAY that it sent a nuisance alligator trapper to the private residence on March 28.

Alligator seen lurking outside of Fort Myers home

Siara Mercedes Grant told Storyful about her encounter with an uninvited visitor outside her Fort Myers home on Thursday, April 18.

“I was cooking dinner when my neighbor called me to tell me there was an alligator outside of my house and to warn my husband, who would be coming home soon,” she said. "I opened the door to see where it was, and my husband yelled at me from the driveway, ’Don’t come out!’

According to Fort Myers News-Press, Grant's husband videoed the gator, which she said was hiding under the neighbor's car before trying to knock open the door to another house. Professional alligator wranglers came the next day to remove the reptile.

Man bitten by 11-foot alligator while walking dogs

According to a Collier County Sheriff's Office report, Rick Fingeret, 67, was walking his dogs in Naples when a nearly 11-foot gator attacked him and attempted to drag him to a pond.

The Naples Daily News reported that Fingeret waved down a motorist passing by and told her to run the alligator over. Once the alligator was run over, the sheriff's office's report says, it released Fingeret's leg and ran into the water.

Fingeret's injuries have not been reported as of yet. First responders treated and airlifted him to Lee Memorial Hospital, in Fort Myers for treatment.

Man wrangles 8-foot alligator with bare hands

In the most Florida story ever, a barefoot man wrangled an unruly gator that was hanging out in downtown Jacksonville.

USA Today reported Mike Dragich, a licensed alligator trapper, caught the alligator by his tail and then sat on top of him so he wouldn't escape. All while wearing no shoes.

Picking up the alligator like a baby, Dragich showed that the 8-foot alligator was no match for him, celebrating his victory by parading around with the reptile for everyone to see.

Nearly 10-foot alligator parks itself on MacDill Air Force Base runway in Tampa

An alligator parked itself on the tarmac of South Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base and blocked traffic until authorities arrived.

A video obtained by USA TODAY shows what officials described on Facebook as their "newest toothy Airman" as it was being captured by two FWC officers. It tried to break away from their restraints.

Officials said the alligator was later relocated to the Hillsborough River, where it had most likely been pushed out by a larger competitor.

Safety tips : How to stay safe around alligators

Remember, alligators may always be present near any body of water in Florida, especially fresh or brackish water. The FWC offered these tips to stay safe:

  • Closely supervise children when they are playing in or around water.
  • Never swim outside of posted swimming areas.
  • Don't wade in waters where large alligators are known or likely to occur.
  • Swim only during daylight hours. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn.
  • Do not allow pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near waters that may contain alligators or in designated swimming areas with humans. Dogs are more susceptible to being bitten than humans because dogs resemble the natural prey of alligators. The sound of dogs barking and playing may draw an alligator to the area.
  • Never feed or entice alligators — it is dangerous and illegal. When fed, alligators overcome their natural wariness and associate people with food.
  • Inform others that feeding alligators is illegal and creates problems for others who want to recreate in or near the water.
  • Dispose of fish scraps in garbage cans at boat ramps and fish camps — do not throw them in the water.
  • Observe and photograph alligators only from a safe distance.
  • Leave alligators alone. State law prohibits killing, harassing or possessing alligators except under permit.
  • Never remove an alligator from its natural habitat or accept one as a pet. It is illegal and dangerous to do so. Handling even small alligators can result in injury.
