Kolymbia In Rhodes – Your Guide To The Tourist Village

One location that is popular when discussing areas to stay is Kolymbia In Rhodes (Κολυμπια in Greek). You will also see it written as ‘Kolimbia’

Located just under 23 kilometers from the city of Rhodes down the East coast, this is an area very popular with holidaymakers.

I actually have a lot of people contacting me asking about the best places to stay while on the island too.

Of course, you cannot only think about your hotel or accommodation, you need to bear in mind facilities in the local area, and how far away you are from different places and other things of  interest.

In this section, I want to talk to you about the area of Kolymbia in Rhodes and what is on offer. This way you can make up your own mind!

So, let’s get started shall we!

The Local Area

The village of Kolymbia in Rhodes sits beautifully in a rocky mountain landscape. This makes for some wonderful photographs as the rocks and mountains meet the beaches and the sea water beautifully.

From the main road (called the Rhodes – Lindos Road), you enter the village by taking the long street all the way towards the beach area.

This street is called Eucalyptus street, as when you drive or walk down it, you can see hundreds of massive Eucalyptus trees running the entire length on each side.

This street was built by The Italians during their occupation of Rhodes.

As you near the end of the street you will see the beach of Kolymbia open up in front of you.

Along the way you will see lots of places which will make your holiday all the more enjoyable. There is a lot available when it comes to restaurants and bars and you will find many outlets to Rent A Car or Moto should you wish to.

In my opinion, if you want to see the island and not be one of those that sits around in the hotels all day, renting a car is a great way to see the island.

For me, I would much prefer to get around and see the different places.

While Kolymbia in Rhodes offers nice accommodation and some friendly outlets, it can be limited.

If you are staying for many days, you could easily become tired of doing and seeing the same things.

Hotels Hotels Hotels

The first thing you will probably notice about Kolymbia (Κολύμπια) is the massive number of hotels all around the area. To be honest, the skyline is dominated by them.

You will discover most of them are 5-star luxury establishments and you will not really turn a corner without seeing one.

A little joke I have with my friends here, is that if you are an architect – you will love it here!

A lot of the hotels have agreements with the big tour operators such as TUI, Thomas Cook, Neckermann etc, so in the summer this area does get very busy, and most of the time they are fully booked.

With this in mind, I would not turn up at the last moment and try to find accommodation in this area.

Booking in advance is always recommended, especially in the high season!

As always, when you visit holiday areas like this, you can easily see a lot of money has gone into making Kolymbia very beautiful.

The hotels are like palaces and they are kept spotlessly clean.

My opinion still stands though, because they are all-inclusive, people arrive for their holiday, go into the hotel, stay there and do not leave again until their holiday is finished.

Of course this does not apply to all people, but the all-inclusive arrangement offers most things you need. ‘Food, entertainment, leisure etc’.

It is enough to stop people going out and actually seeing the island!

You will be happy to learn (I was anyway), that there are also some smaller family run villas where you can stay to enjoy your holiday.

I always prefer this option, as you will get a more personal and friendly service for sure. Some people prefer to give their money to the locals rather than some of the huge worldwide companies.

After saying all this, when it comes to beauty, Kolymbia in Rhodes is quite a lovely place. Whatever your fancy is for accommodation, you can find it here.

The Beach – Kolymbia In Rhodes

Although not a massively popular beach (with the exception of people staying in the area), it really does offer everything you need to have a nice relaxing time.

The beach is quite large and extensive and all the facilities you could want are there.

You can rent a sunbed and umbrella for a day and you can stay as long as you like.

There are small snack bars to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat and there are shower and toilet facilities too.

There is also a smaller sandy beach area for children where the water is nice and shallow offering more peace of mind.

You will find the beach overall very peaceful and quiet. There are other beaches nearby (and better) but you will find them very crowded.

If you want peace and you are staying in Kolymbia, I do not think you will be disappointed.

Just be aware, that this is an area with huge hotels. Some of these have the rights over certain areas on the beach. It is easy to understand these areas though.

Please do not fret about this, as the beach is big enough for you to find a perfect place to enjoy your time! (it is probable that if you are staying in Kolymbia, you will be a guest in one of these hotels anyway).

You will also be pleased to know that from the beach, there are areas where you can go snorkeling, do some water sports and even do some fishing.

Kolymbia in rhodes – the village limitations.

Although Kolimbia in Rhodes is quite an attractive area and full of beautiful hotels with a great beach, it does have its limitations.

Personally, I could not stay in Kolymbia for the whole duration of my holiday and not want to see venture out and see something else.

Except for a few tourist shops, there is very little in the way of shopping facilities.

There are some nice restaurants, but there are better ones on the island. There are some places where you can go for a drink, but if you want something with a little more kick, you would need to venture out and about.

For shopping, the best place of course is in the city of Rhodes .

Aside from that, you also get to see some beautiful history in the area and you can make a great day of it.

The restaurants and bars in Rhodes City too will give you a real taste of what Greek Cuisine is all about. This is not always something you find (with quality at least) in smaller tourist areas or in your all-inclusive hotel! (My opinion of course).

Also, Kolymbia does not have any nightclubs.

So if having a night out on the town is your thing, again you will need to venture outside the village.

For the nightlife, people tend to head out in the Faliraki direction. Here you will find no end of options when it comes to dancing the night away!

If you are happy with simple entertainment though and do not want to go to far away from home, then most of the big 5 star hotels do have organized shows.

Again one point though, if you are staying for any length of time, you will see most of these events are repeated!

Kolymbia In Rhodes Overall

Yes, I like Kolymbia. It has some beautiful views and places to stay. I would never say something bad for this area. I think it offers a great chance for people to enjoy a good holiday.

While I say this, I do think an easy trap to fall into is not to see the rest of the island.

Because of the infrastructure of the hotels and the way the 5 star resorts ‘provide everything’, it deters people from getting out and about.

If you are willing to stay in this area, enjoy the beach and some of the bars and restaurants, then this is great.

Just be sure to make use of a rent a car or other transport option, and do not miss the beauty the island as a whole has to offer.

The only thing I recommend you keep an open mind with, is how you move around.

I know a lot of people take a taxi to get to where they want to go, but if you wanted to see Lindos or Rhodes City for example, and you take a cab from Kolymbia, you can end up paying a lot of money.

I will not tell you not to take a cab, but just be careful with your hard-earned cash!

Very nice post. I haven’t visited Rhodes yet (although I plan to), but you offer an enticing view of the place. I agree that hotels discourage visitors from investing their money into the local economy of the island. 

I am familiar with hotels having rights over beaches. A number of years ago the locals of a town in Spain challenged a hotel for the rights to a local beach. They succeeded and now the beach belongs to the island once again.

Yeah, I guess these big monopolies in the area can sometimes take a larger slice of the pie. Money talks unfortunately.

On saying that, it is made very clear in this area, and there is a lot of space for people to come and relax. it is not so much of an issue (at the moment).

This looks like a nice quaint and quiet place. Interesting name too. How big is it? Just curious about the population size. I am a artistic person so I know I’d love it a lot. I am no architect but I really appreciate nicely done, structured buildings and art. One of my favorite hobbies is to visit museums and art shows.

Kolymbia itself is a resort for holidaymakers, so you will not find a lot of people in this area that actually live there.

Actually, in the winter period, the whole area closes down and it is extremely quiet here.

The beach is well worth a visit and if you like painting, then you can really find some good spots to be creative!

I have visited Rhodes before and although I passed by the area of Kolymbia many times, I never actually stopped there. 

As I always choose to stay in more relaxed accommodation (I hate the 5 star approach), I never really though to venture there either.

On saying that, the beach looks beautiful, so during my next stay maybe I will check that out.

Yes, although the area is swamped with hotels, there are some nice points to it as well.

The beach is very nice and you can really relax there. There are a few outlets too where you can get a bite to eat etc. Definitely worth dropping by on your next visit.

Well, like I say in the information here, Kolymbia can be found down the East coast of the island at a distance of approximately 23km. It is not too far.

All of the charter companies for your trips by sea can be found in Rhodes Town at the harbor. There are no charter boat services operating from Kolymbia!

Does Rhodes have Airbnb? You can stay with the locals but I don’t know what the locals charge per night, and whether they provide meals. The video about Kolymbia helps readers/audience better imagine what Kolymbia looks like.

Hey Dom… Like I say, when it comes to the area of Kolymbia, it is pretty much hotels and villas all the way. There are no (or very little) locals actually living in the area. Actually, come the winter periods, the area closes down completely.

If you visit the Airbnb site, I am sure you can target some more information.

When it comes to the shows, they all vary. and are available to see in one of the hotels that offer the entertainment.

I have friends from Greece, and definitely, I will go travel to Greece in the future.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."
