Charlotte Duck

Hollie Bond and her ten-month-old daughter Margot tested out the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light during their travels to see how it fared.

The BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light gets our vote as the best travel cot to buy if you're looking for something super easy to assemble. Flying long-haul and want the assurance that your cot will be a doddle to set up? This is the one to buy.

It's a very good option for a lightweight travel cot, because it is really easy to transport, looks stylish, and, most importantly for frazzled parents, it is extremely easy to assemble and put back down. It comes with a comfortable mattress and mattress cover included, along with a handy bag that ‘it’s really easy to fit back in,’ according to our tester, Hollie.

She found the low base a bit off-putting as you have to bend over quite a way to put your child into the cot, but this also means it doubles up as a playpen. ‘I took the cot to my parents' house to use as a playpen and it worked a treat, keeping Margot safely away from all the delicate antiques and trinkets,’ she says.

While at the pricier end of the spectrum, Hollie thinks it's well worth the extra money because of the quality of the fabric and materials used.

Baby Bjorn Travel Cot

VIEW AT AMAZON | £220

Weighs: 6kg (including bag) | Age: Birth to 3 years

Our tester Hollie’s first impression of the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light was that it lived up to its name - it arrived in a smart bag with a useful carry handle and is indeed very light. ‘In the past, I've had to wrestle with travel cots and spent ages trying to get the knack of putting them up, but with this cot, I managed to assemble it in seconds with one hand while holding my baby and without reading any instructions,’ she says. ‘It's very intuitive and just folds out into shape straightaway.’

As well as the cot itself, this travel cot comes with a ‘surprisingly spongy and soft’ mattress and a fitted cot sheet. The mattress is attached to the cot via little tabs that go through the cot lining and fasten to the frame.

‘This cot doesn't come with a bassinet option and is very low to the ground, so it was quite a stretch to place Margot down onto the mattress, so I wouldn't recommend it for parents with back problems,’ adds Hollie. ‘Luckily, the days of me having to stroke Margot's back to get her to sleep are over too, as that would have been a problem.’ There is a flip side to the low base, however – it means the travel cot can double up as a playpen when you’re travelling or even at home.

Comfort and features

Our tester was impressed by the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light’s mattress and apparently, her daughter was too. ‘The mattress is well padded and as soon as I put Margot in the cot she had a lie down and snuggled in,’ says Hollie. ‘She slept as well in it as she does in her more sturdy and higher up cot at home, and had enough space to move around in her sleep comfortably.’

As you’d expect from the BabyBjörn brand, the quality of the cot is excellent. ‘I loved that it felt sturdy and solid even though it's lightweight,’ adds Hollie. She also liked the mesh sides which meant that she could keep an eye on Margot as she slept but they didn’t let too much light in.

This travel cot is designed for newborns through to three-year-olds, which Hollie did find a bit optimistic. ‘My now-four-year-old son definitely wouldn't have fitted in it at three and probably would have grown out of it by the age of two.’

Value for money

At £220, this travel cot doesn’t come cheap but our tester feels it's worth the money. ‘It has a lot of high-quality features - such as the smart carry bag and padded mattress - that you'd look for in a top-of-the-range travel cot,’ she says. The fact that it doubles up as a playpen also adds to the value.

Hollie would recommend the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light to anyone planning to do lots of travelling with their baby and says it'll particularly appeal to parents who like baby products to look good, but also work really well.

This gets our vote as the best travel cot for easy assembly of all those we tested but you might also like to read our Joie Kubbie Sleep Travel Cot review – it’s the best travel cot overall, according to our parent reviews. And don’t forget to check out the rest of our baby product reviews .

Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light review

baby bjorn travel cot mattress size

  • Sarah Barker

In a nutshell

An extremely light, high-quality travel cot that's easy to put up and portable.

What we tested

  • High quality, machine washable sides and mattress cover, angled sides for smaller spaces, robust carry bag, extremely easy to put up and take down
  • Expensive, doesn't feature bassinet so difficult to lift young baby out, not really suitable for children over 30 months

Showing item 1 of 3

baby bjorn travel cot mattress size

The Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light is a compact, portable baby bed and is a breeze to put up, even one handed. However, its size means you could need to check it in as separate luggage if you’re flying off abroad.

The Travel Cot Light isn’t necessarily a new product for the big name in baby carriers , Baby Bjorn. It has been sold elsewhere in the world, but it wasn’t until early 2011 that it reached us in the UK, because of the different fire safety standards we have for products.

The Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light weighs only 5kg, including its carry case. It boasts an ease-to-erect design and a mattress with built-in base. It’s this mattress that keeps the Travel Cot Light on the floor once its up.

Baby Bjorn says the Travel Cot Light can be used for newborns through to children around 3 years of age. I tested it with my baby Ted, 4 months, and my toddler Jack, 30 months. The size of the cot was great for baby Ted, with plenty of wriggle room, but Jack would soon grow out of it. Jack also worked out how to climb out of it, although to be fair Baby Bjorn doesn’t recommend using the cot for a child over 35 inches tall.

What we love

The quality of this item is superb, which means it should last you through a few kids and still be available to pass on to a friend.

The mattress is well padded and baby Ted seemed very comfortable in it. That said, it was quite a stretch to get him out because it doesn’t feature a bassinet, which might be a consideration if you have a bad back.

A useful feature is the angled sides, which would make the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light easier to cram into a small space than my current model, which is fairly bulky. The sides are mesh, which means it is easy to see what your baby is up to.

The fabric is nice and soft, so would feel nice against your baby's skin. Also, all fabrics that come into contact with your baby’s skin are free from any harmful substances. The breathable cotton mattress cover and the fabric on the exterior of the cot are removable and machine washable.

The Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light is extremely easy to put up – important when trying to put your baby down quickly and quietly in a new place.

The carry case actually features proper handles, so unlike my current travel cot, it is extremely portable.

What to watch out for

The Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light comes in a robust carry case, which means it is easy to cart about, although the cot in its bag is fairly bulky. Because of its size it wouldn’t be possible to pack it into anything but the most enormous suitcase. The carry case is so sturdy it would survive the experience of airport baggage handling, although the extra costs of transportation on some budget airlines might put some parents off.

The price tag of this travel cot is eye watering and I’m not entirely sure what the user is paying for. This is especially important for those who want to take a travel cot abroad - it would need to be checked in as luggage and it might take quite a battering in transit, something that may not bother you with a cheaper cot but which could matter when you’ve spent this sum.

Who is the Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light best for?

Wealthy travelling parents who want a high-quality, long-lasting travel cot.

MadeForMums verdict

An extremely light, high-quality travel cot, the Baby Bjorn Travel Cot Light is a breeze to put up and very portable in its well-designed carry bag. However, it comes at a high price.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is easy to use, features a sleek design, and has ample space for play—but it comes with a high price tag.

  • Competition
  • Final Verdict

We purchased the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light so our writer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light provides a safe space for babies to sleep and play when they aren’t at home. Parents who travel frequently can benefit from this product because it packs up into a small, durable carrying case. It meets standards for a safe sleep space for smaller babies but is large enough to last beyond the first year. Read on for all the details of this pack n’ play and to find out if it’s worth the price.

Setup Process: You get what you pay for

If there is anything about this travel crib that is worth the price tag, it’s the setup and tear down process. When I first pulled the framing out of the bag, it felt like all I had to do was give it a little shake and it set itself up. Okay, that’s a stretch, but it really was super easy and intuitive. I had never used this product prior to receiving it and I didn’t have to pull out the instructions at all for setup.

Once it’s set up, the play yard offers a lot of space for a baby to play and sleep.

Tear down was also really easy, but not quite as intuitive. I tried to do it by myself a few times before giving in and pulling up a YouTube video to help me out. Once I watched the process one time, I was good. I was able to tear it down without a problem each time I used it from there.

Also, packing it up into its carrier was extremely easy. There aren’t any special measures I had to take to ensure everything was packed up correctly. It fits into the case with ease (no forcing the zipper closed).

Design: Sleek and durable

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is made from quality materials. Its framing is made from thin metal rods that, despite their appearance, hold up the play yard well and are not flimsy. The top of the crib is lined with thick, padded fabric to ensure a baby won’t hurt themselves on any metal. The play yard itself sort of hangs from the top frame, as the metal bars aren’t directly attached to it. The sides of the play yard are made from a mesh fabric that allows for visibility into the space as well as airflow, making it safe for sleep if your baby presses up against it.

The mattress comes folded in half, unattached, and has straps sewn onto the bottom of it, which loop through the bottom of the play yard’s framing and connect to a hook (one on each of the four legs) to ensure it stays put and doesn’t pose a risk to a sleeping or playing baby . Additionally, the mattress is really plush (not too plush, of course) so it’s definitely a cozy spot for a baby to sleep.

Carrying the play yard in the travel case may have been easier than carrying my daughter’s diaper bag.

The fabric that covers the mattress is okay, but it really needs a sheet for comfortable sleeping. Because of the play yard’s design, the mattress sits pretty much on the floor, which makes it a little tough to lay down or lift babies who can’t sit up or pull up on their own.

Once it’s set up, the pack n’ play offers a lot of space for a baby to play and sleep. It’s not as large as a standard size crib, of course, but at over 3 feet long, it will take a while for a child to outgrow it for sleep.

My favorite part about the play yard is that all of the fabric is removable and washable. Even the most “stain-resistant” fabrics can get pretty dirty (and gross) from spit-up, drool, sticky hands, and (worst case scenario) diaper mishaps, so this feature is a major plus.

Coming in at a close second for favorite features is this travel crib’s weight and portability. Carrying it from room to room was a breeze and carrying it in the travel case may have been easier than carrying my daughter’s diaper bag . Parents always have about a million things to carry, so I really appreciated the attention the manufacturer put into this detail.

Safety: Low risk, even for young toddlers

This play yard was designed carefully to reduce safety hazards as much as possible. Everything is breathable, the crib’s legs stand outward to provide more stability, and all the metal pieces are thoroughly covered. The main thing parents need to stay alert about is their child’s ability to crawl out of the play yard. Once they learn how to do that, it’s time to discontinue use.

Age Range: Focus on safety, not age range

The manufacturer lists the age range for this product as 0 to 3 years (or until they can crawl out of the play yard) and it has no weight limit. As a mom to both a baby (7-months-old) and a little kid (3-year-old), I have to disagree. A more realistic age range would likely be 3 months to 2 years.

Since my oldest daughter is past the 3-year mark, I didn’t test the product with her in it, but there’s no way it would have worked for her even in the months leading up to her third birthday. She’s much too big physically and was able to crawl out of her crib when she was only 18 months old. Not every kid climbs as early as she did, but I still think this product would be a stretch for most 3-year-olds.

This play yard was designed carefully to reduce safety hazards as much as possible.

On the other end, it would be really difficult to safely lay down and pick up an infant without head control in this play yard. My 7-month-old (who was born premature, so is around 5-months developmentally) can’t sit up on her own quite yet and it was tough for me to pick her up from that low on the ground, so I can’t imagine being able to safely lay down a newborn.

Price: On the highest of high-end

At around $300, this is definitely not budget-friendly. Comparable products start at around $60 so there is a big gap. There are aspects to the play yard, like portability and ease of setup and tear down, that call for a higher price tag, but this price still seems a little inflated. Also, you’ll probably want a sheet for the mattress. If you want to purchase a fitted sheet with the travel crib, Babybjorn sells it as a bundle for $20 more.

Competition: A lot of options

Graco Pack ‘n Play Portable Playard: We also tested this Graco play yard ( view on Amazon ), which retails for around $60 and is still very high quality. It sits a little higher up, making it a little easier to get a baby in and out, however, a child will outgrow it a little faster than the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light. The Graco is a bit heavier and bulkier when it’s packed up, but is still a great travel option for families who take a few trips a year.

Dream on Me Travel Light PlayYard: If you like the design of the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light, this Dream on Me pack n’ play ( view on Amazon ) is similar but has a much lower price point of around $80. Though they look basically identical, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light allows you to remove the fabric to machine wash, while the Dream on Me Travel Light PlayYard needs to be wiped down for cleaning.

JOOVY New Room2 Portable Playard: One of the major advantages of the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is its mattress size because it provides a lot of space for a baby to sleep and play. If that’s a primary need, the JOOVY New Room2 Portable Playard ( view on Amazon ) has 10 square feet of play space, which will give your little one plenty of room to roll around (in fact, it’s marketed to families with twins , so there’s plenty of space for just one baby). It retails for around $150, however, and it’s also bulkier and heavier than the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light.

If you travel a lot, it’s worth the price tag.

There is no shortage of pack n’ play options on the market, but the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light stands alone in its portability, convenience, and durability. If you’re a family that only travels here and there, it may not be worth the extra money to upgrade. However, if you travel a lot, this play yard will last you a long time, it will be easy to pack into a car or carry in an airport, and it will be easy to pop up in a hotel room—so the price is worth it.

BabyBjörn Light Travel Cot review

travel cot

This travel cot is easy to set up and folds away in no time. The mattress is plush and comfy, while a built-in base plate makes it really sturdy and secure, and it will last for years, which helps compensate for the price tag. The age range is from birth to three years.

2015 – Shortlisted for 'Best Travel Product Over £25' Award!

The BabyBjörn  Travel Cot Light is easy to put up and take down, and is big enough to accommodate a two-year-old with room to spare. It folds compactly, as does the accompanying mattress, which is nicely padded, and is lightweight, making it ideal for frequent travel. The product is, however, undeniably expensive, especially for something that is likely to be used only 'on the occasion' rather than every day; the cot remains unaffordable in spite of its superior quality.

2014 – Shortlisted for 'Best Travel Product Over £25' Award!

BabyBjorn’s Travel Cot Light is fabulous! It’s compact, lightweight, easy to store and simple to use. The mattress is super comfy (a rarity in travel cots) and the cot itself is not so deep that it’s a struggle to get little ones in and out; the downside to this is that older tots may be able to climb out of the cot, which shortens its lifespan.

The cot is perfect for camping and great for parents with an on-the-go lifestyle. It is expensive but great quality, convenient and worth every penny.

This travel cot was reviewed by three real mums in the April 2015 issue of M&B magazine, and was the WINNER of our Big Travel Cot Test!

If you are going to be using a travel cot frequently, this model is worth its price tag.

Suitable from birth up to three years of age, it’s lightweight and easy-to-use. You can lift it out of its storage bag and set it up in one simple movement. There are no extra parts to attach (or lose), and the legs unfold automatically.

It comes with a good quality mattress and features a built-in base plate that keeps the cot steady. Soft mesh fabric makes it easy to keep an eye on your baby. The cot fabric and mattress cover are both machine washable.

Corinne Hills, 37, from Sheffield, is mum to Arthur, 14 months, Wilfred, three, Tobias, five, and Tom, 15, said: ‘This is exactly what I've been looking for. It’s compact when folded, lightweight and incredibly easy to use, with clear instructions. Plus, a really soft and comfortable mattress.’

Roz Walker, 32, from Glasgow, is mum to Aaron, seven months, said: ‘I’d happily let my son sleep in this every night. The mattress is great. The cot doesn’t take up much space, but there’s still plenty of space for him to grow.’

Naomi Johnson, 32, from Peterborough, is mum to Logan, 10 weeks, and Elizabeth, 11, said: ‘The sloped sides give the advantage of a large base while still creating a small, cosy space to sleep in. The mattress is very thick and comfy. My favourite!’

A well-made travel cot that provides a great combination of comfort, ease of assembly and portability. The shape makes it good for squeezing into a smaller room, but some parents might find the legs stick out awkwardly. Expensive, but could be a worthwhile investment for regular travellers.

While not cheap, this is a great cot for parents who travel a lot and will get their money’s worth. It is great quality and lightweight which makes it idiot-proof to put up and down.

It also has plenty of room and rests well on the ground, making it sturdy and safe. The carry case is useful and it would definitely be good for overseas travel because of its weight, as well as on public transport when necessary. The mattress is comfortable too. It would have been handy to have a bassinet attachment for younger babies and a shoulder strap for the carry case, and the posts can be easy to trip over.

BabyBjorn Travel Cot Light review

Best luxury travel cot 2018.

If you’re looking to make a serious investment, this may be the travel cot for you

By Mumsnet HQ | Last updated Jan 18, 2024

BabyBjorn travel cot

Light, comfortable and strong, the BabyBjorn fits into a suitcase-style bag which is easy to lift into a car boot and can actually be carried (rather than dragged). It functions as a great playpen for tots, and is easy to clean with a zip-off fabric cover.

Folding is also key with travel cots, and the BabyBjorn makes it look easy. There are only three steps to assembling the cot; take it out of the bag, unfold the legs, and flip it over to where you can put the mattress in. We found the cot almost pops up by itself and, unlike genuine pop-up cots, it’s incredibly stable and secure – all of the ease with none of the risk.

As many travel cots are wipe-down only, we especially loved the way the fabrics can all be unzipped for washing. This is useful for any child, but with our tester’s reflux baby it was a Godsend. We loved the mattress, too – the softest of any we tested. All babies are different, but our tester’s baby slept best in this cot.

BabyBjorn’s travel cot looks fairly standard, with a playpen-style mesh frame, rectangular mattress and folding carry case. However, having tested 10 travel cots over nearly three months, we can say that the BabyBjorn was one of our favourites to assemble.

Some travel cots are huge, but if you don't mind the expense, get a BabyBjorn travel cot - it's smaller and cosier for a young baby.

However, there’s no denying that the BabyBjorn is expensive. At more than £200, it’s the priciest in the category, so it’s not too surprising that it did well. If you’d only use a travel cot once a year, we might point you to a cheaper option, but if you’re looking to make a serious investment, this may be the cot for you.

Suitable from: Birth to three years

Weight: 6 kg, including carry bag

Folded Dimensions: D49 x L60 x W14 cm
