'Barbie' Global Tour Will Take Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling to Eight Cities Around the World

Grab your rollerblades, Barbie and Ken are coming to a city near you.

What's Barbie About?

While the iconic doll has had her fair share of animated films for at-home viewing, this will be the first time a live-action adaptation will make its way into theaters. Starring Robbie and Gosling as the film’s main Barbie and Ken, respectively, the storyline follows Barbie after she’s been booted from Barbieland, given no choice but to make it in the real world. Boasting a star-studded cast, the film will also feature performances by Simu Liu , Kate McKinnon , John Cena , Dua Lipa , Issa Rae , Rhea Perlman , Will Ferrell , Kingsley Ben-Adir , Michael Cera , and so many more. The third feature from Gerwig, Barbie follows the director’s successful and Academy Award-nominated films, Lady Bird and Little Women .

Barbie in real life: Los Angeles among 8 stops for global ‘Barbie' movie tour

You don't have to wait until "Barbie" hits the big screen to hang out with Barbie and Ken.

Margot Robbie, who plays the pint-sized plastic icon, and Ryan Gosling, who plays Barbie's boyfriend, announced Monday they will embark on an eight city global Barbie tour.

The duo will make appearances in Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Sydney, Seoul, Mexico City, London and Berlin to promote the upcoming film's release.

"Margot and I are taking this show on the road," Gosling said in a video posted to the film's Instagram account .

Details on how or when Barbie fans could get tickets to the global Barbie tour were not immediately released, but fans can expect lots of pink .

In the official movie trailer, Barbie experiences an existential crisis that serves as the catalyst for her and Ken to leave picture perfect Barbie Land for the "real world." The star-studded cast also includes Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, America Ferrera and Kate McKinnon.

The live-action Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig, hits theaters July 21.

“World of Barbie” debuts in Toronto this July and will stop in New York, Chicago, Dallas and other cities

Visiting Barbie's Dreamhouse is now a reality!

Barbie fans of all ages will be able to walk into a human-size version of her imaginative world at "World of Barbie," an immersive experience that celebrates everything the iconic doll's universe has to offer. Entertainment company Kilburn Live partnered with Mattel to bring Barbie's neighborhood to cities across North America as part of a tour that kicks off this summer in Toronto. The attraction will stop in New York, Chicago and Dallas with more to come.

"World of Barbie," created by entertainment company Kilburn Live and Mattel , kicks off this summer in Toronto before touring around North America, and will allow fans to walk down Barbie's neighborhood streets. Visitors can explore several immersive play sets, including a life-size version of Barbie's bubblegum pink camper van. The vehicle even includes a hammock to lounge on, bringing a signature feature of the toy campers to life.

Other event highlights include strutting down the pink carpet, which features a row of six giant doll boxes with themes like "Western" and "Fashionista" that guests can climb into to snap a photo.

The real show-stopper is Barbie's iconic dreamhouse. According to Mark Manuel, CEO of Kilburn Live, the life-size house will transport guests to Malibu.

Not only can visitors sit in Barbie's modern living room and kitchen, but they can also play outside on a patio complete with a fake pool. And, of course, fans can walk into Barbie's closet, full of her different career-themed clothing and outfits inclusive of her style over the years.

What makes "World of Barbie" stand out is that the experience is meant to be enjoyed across generations, says Manuel: "Stepping into Barbie's real life dreamhouse, being transported to Malibu, sitting down in her camper van…there's no age limit to that."

There's also an element of nostalgia in Barbie's real-life neighborhood for grown-up fans. "You also have an older generation who's going to walk through and be brought back to their childhood days," he adds.

"World of Barbie" even includes a museum that chronicles Barbie's development over the decades. Julie Freeland, Senior Director of Location-Based Entertainment at Mattel, says that part of the attraction really plays into the universal connection fans have with Barbie.

"I travel all over the world, and people have their own stories of the favorite dreamhouse they had when they were a kid or their favorite doll that they grew up with. And they pass that on to their kids," she tells PEOPLE.

Barbie's neighborhood also includes multiple play sets that are career driven — from a TV studio to a space center and fashion studio. There's even a hands-on science lab where visitors can perform experiments. The purpose of the play sets isn't just purely fun. They're meant to help young kids explore and cultivate their interests.

"Barbie has had so many firsts, and has had so many different careers," Freeland said. "We hope that they leave truly feeling inspired and feeling like [they] can do anything."

We all know that the plot of this summer's Barbie movie (in theaters July 21) revolves around Barbie and Ken swapping Barbie's Dreamhouse for the real world. (Although, if we're honest, we'd love to swap our world for Barbieland for a bit). And thanks to the newest announcement from Barbie the Movie 's Instagram, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (who play Barbie and Ken, respectively) will be taking a trip around our world, just like their characters.

"You don't have to go all the way to Barbieland to hang with Barbie and Ken," Robbie says in the promo.

"Margot and I are taking this show on the road," Gosling adds.

The film hits theaters on July 21, but the Barbie team is doing more than just one big premiere — they're doing eight premieres. Films often host premieres in different countries, allowing fans all over the world to be a part of the experience. And Barbie the Movie is no different.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will embark on a world tour that, in addition to the usual New York City and Los Angeles, includes six more cities:

• Toronto, Canada
• Sydney, Australia
• Seoul, South Korea
• Mexico City, Mexico
• London, England
• Berlin, Germany

Not only does the promo give us that exciting news, but it also features some amazing fashion choices, just like we've seen throughout the entire promotional process. From CinemaCon to showing the cast their own IRL Barbie dolls , the fashion choices have put creativity at the forefront. Well, creativity and pink, of course.

We're obsessed with Robbie's corset and mini skirt (a combo fit for a Barbie doll if you ask us). Gosling is also rocking pink, just a more laidback salmon that will definitely influence our next swimsuit cover up purchase.

And, just like us, the pair also has their summer packing list top of mind: "Are you packing your roller blades?" Robbie asks, to which Gosling gives her a smirk. "You know I can't roller blade in real life."

The highly anticipated premiere of the Barbie movie is almost upon us, and the whirlwind of publicity and marketing surrounding the film is spreading like wildfire. To get everyone even more excited, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling announced their plans to visit a number of countries, including the United States and Mexico, for promotional activities related to the movie. Fans can’t wait to get up close and personal to the actors, director et al.

Barbie and Ken go global

Through a video shared on official social media accounts, the actors revealed their intention to embark on a tour across eight of the world’s most significant cities. This exciting journey will take them through Canada, Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, and Seoul.

As we enter July, the tour has begun and the timing of it aligns perfectly with the scheduled release of the expected blockbuster, which as well as starring Robbie is also produced by her, from July 20. The anticipation is palpable, and fans eagerly await the chance to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars promoting this exciting Barbie adventure.

Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ have generated immense interest and both movies are set to grace the big screen within a mere day of each other. Greta Gerwig earned Academy Award nominations in 2018 for Best Directing and Best Original Screenplay for her film ‘Lady Bird’. She also directed the captivating adaptation of ‘Little Women’, featuring the talents of Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan.

‘Barbie’ Frenzy Continues With Aqua’s 2023 ‘Barbie World Tour’

The masterminds behind the 1997 smash-hit “Barbie Girl” are heading out on the aptly-titled ‘Barbie World Tour’ this fall amid the ongoing ‘Barbie’ sensation.

Mattel’s 2023 ‘Barbie’ movie has officially surpassed $1 billion in box office sales internationally, breaking various records. You’ve probably seen promotional materials for the film everywhere — with a whopping $150 million spent on the movie’s marketing campaign, and now, the frenzy will continue.

“AMERICA…You wanna go for a ride?” Aqua, the Danish-Norweigan Europop group, asked on a social media post this week.

The U.S. trek will kick-off in Seattle on November 12, followed by gigs at venues like New Orleans’ Fillmore, the House of Blues in Chicago, and The Depot in Salt Lake City. They’ll wrap-up at Los Angeles’s Hollywood Palladium on December 20.

The chart-topping track “Barbie Girl” certainly helped put Aqua on the map in the late ’90s with their debut Aquarium — and it was even sampled in the ‘Barbie’ film under the new name “Barbie World,” recorded by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. However, the dace-pop group still has more to offer, delivering Aquarius in 2000 and Megalomania in 2011 after over a decade-long break.

Since 2016, the band has been back in action and released the single “Rookie” in 2018 and “I Am What I Am” in 2021.

The Danish-Norwegian Europop group – best known for their 1997 hit ‘Barbie World’ – will kick off the aptly named tour at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre on November 12, with stops planned for San Francisco, Philadelphia, Las Vegas and many more, before they wrap up at The Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on December 20.

“AMERICA… You wanna go for a ride?” the band asked on their social media post announcing the tour.

Pre-sale tickets go on sale August 28 at 10am local time, while general sale goes live August 30 at 10am EST from here .

‘Barbie Girl’ by Aqua has seen a resurgence in recent months due to the buzz around the Barbie movie.

While the track did not feature directly on the star-studded soundtrack , a reimagined version was recorded by Nicki Minaj  and  Ice Spice , which sees the pair sample original snippets of the Aqua classic.

It was previously reported last year that Aqua’s version of ‘Barbie Girl’  would not feature in the film , but star Margot Robbie was apparently insistent on it featuring.

“I was like, ‘Greta, how are we going to incorporate this song? We can’t do a Barbie movie and not have a nod to Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl.’ It has to be in there.’ And [Greta] was like, ‘Don’t worry, we’re going to find a cool way to incorporate it,’ ” recalled Robbie in a feature with Rolling Stone .

She continued: “And then, when she was like, ‘Guess who’s going to do the remix of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”? Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.’ I was like, ‘Together? Are you joking?!’ I just knew immediately that all my girlfriends were going to lose their minds.”

The only side effect of this pink-splosion is that you’ll be sad you can’t move in. Aqua Launch ‘Barbie World Tour’ with Dates Across the US in 2023

Danish Europop group Aqua announces its Barbie World Tour with a US leg throughout the rest of 2023.

Aqua, the Danish Europop group best known for their 1997 hit, “Barbie Girl,” announces its Barbie World Tour on Friday, August 25, with dates across the United States throughout the rest of 2023. The tour launches in Seattle at the Paramount Theatre on November 12, with the US leg wrapping up on December 20 at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium.

“America, you wanna go for a ride?” asks Europop band Aqua on their Instagram post announcing the launch of their Barbie World Tour, with the US leg launching in Seattle on November 12 and wrapping up in Los Angeles on December 20.

Following the heels of the band’s return to the cultural zeitgeist after more than 15 years with the launch of the Barbie movie , Danish Europop dance group Aqua is here to bring you back to the ’90s. The band headlined shows at Irving Plaza in New York City and The Belasco in Los Angeles in June and July and are ready to embark on a world tour.

“We’ve been working on this for 27 years!” the band writes on social media. “Performing two sold-out shows in NYC and LA this summer was a dream come true, and to be able to come back soon for a nationwide tour is absolutely insane. We cannot wait to meet everyone for the first time, face to face.”

Newfound cultural interest in Aqua’s 1997 hit “Barbie Girl” from the band’s debut album, “Aquarium,” comes thanks to the blockbuster “Barbie” film — boasting a box office total of $1.3 billion as of this weekend. Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s song from the film’s soundtrack, “Barbie World,” samples Aqua’s track and credits the trio, and debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard all-genre chart dated July 8, marking Nicki’s 23rd Top 10 hit, and Aqua and Ice Spice’s second.

The general public sale begins Wednesday, August 30, at 10 AM ET, while the Spotify Fans First pre-sale begins Monday, August 28, at 10 AM ET.

‘A pink, glittery, existential dance party’: Barbie movie marketing machine kicks off global tour

Fans flocked to a Sydney outdoor mall to meet Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig and co, as the publicity campaign that hasn’t slowed down commenced its final lap

Michaela Merkas wasn’t going to miss seeing Margot Robbie in person.

Since last year, she and friend Olivia Hooker have been obsessively following the increasingly lavish promotion for the upcoming Barbie movie – and now they’re crammed into a crowd in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall, where the film’s stars Margot Robbie and America Ferrera are joining the first fan event of a global publicity tour.

Hooker has brought her own childhood Barbie doll and is clasping it tight. “I was so excited when I heard. I was like, ‘I have to go – whatever I have on that day, I don’t have any more, I’m going’,” she says.

“It’s been hyped on socials for a very long time,” Merkas adds. “The sneak peeks of the rollerblading scene – that is iconic.”

The Barbie movie campaign has been a masterclass in marketing, creating an instant modern icon from one that was six-decades-old. Since the emergence of those first photos in June 2022 – Robbie and Ryan Gosling decked out in fluoro pink and yellow, rollerblading the Venice Beach boardwalk in what Robbie would later describe as “the most humiliating moment of my life” – the anticipation has been fever pitch.

There’s a lifesize Barbie Dreamhouse in Malibu you can attempt to win a night at; an Architectural Digest tour of the plastic fantastic set; and brand tie-ups from suitcases and Xbox controllers to electric toothbrushes and makeup . And, yes, you can even buy those rollerblades for $US289 – plus another $US99 for the knee, elbow and wrist protectors.

If the film itself contributed to a global shortage of pink paint , its promo team didn’t help.

Barbie, which opens in Australia on 20 July and in the UK and US the following day, is expected be one of the biggest movies of the year. Directed and co-written by Lady Bird and Little Women’s Greta Gerwig , and starring Robbie, Gosling, Ferrera, Issa Rae and a teeming ensemble cast, the expectations are as stratospheric as Astronaut Barbie’s space station.

On Pitt Street Mall, the clamouring crowd is decked out in all shades of pink – magenta, fuchsia, cerise, rose, neon and the rest. There are months-old babies in pink beanies, older women with hot pink-striped scarves, and a person in a rainbow-coloured tulle mermaid skirt. The stars greet fans lined-up along the Mall, signing Barbie dolls in boxes and taking photos before ascending the stage for a Q&A; in a refreshing sartorial moment, Robbie takes a selfie with a man in a Slipknot hoodie.

Vincent Nardella wears a string of pearls, pink-rimmed sunglasses and a marbled salmon-pink top layered under his blush jacket.

“Barbie was part of my childhood but one which was hidden,” he says. “I went to my sister’s room and played with her Barbie. To see that in real-life with this movie, it means a lot. It’s important to celebrate everyone and every type of person.”

Gerwig’s Barbie movie, produced through Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment, has been at pains to emphasise its inclusivity. The cast includes Barbies and Kens from all backgrounds and body types, with trans actor Hari Nef as Doctor Barbie.

During a media event the day before at Sydney’s Bondi beach, Gerwig says the target audience for the film is anyone from eight to 108. “It’s a movie that I think can really cut across generations and genders. Everyone can find a pink, glittery existential dance party in their heart.”

Gerwig’s mother wasn’t a fan of Barbie – which only made her child-self more interested in the toy. “I had a lot of hand-me-down Barbies, so I got a lot of Barbies who were like Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie . They didn’t have shoes and their clothes were backwards.”

After Robbie brought her on to the project, Gerwig went to Mattel headquarters, where the business opened up their archives for her.

“They took me through everything from 1959 until now,” she says – a deep dive which compelled Gerwig to re-position what Barbie’s legacy means to fans today.

“If there were rules, I think we broke all of them. That was part of the fun, in a way. Like, ‘Tell me what your sacred cows are and I will do something naughty with them’.”

Gerwig wanted to tap into the full gamut of emotions surrounding the Barbie brand, and all the different feelings – positive, negative and neutral – it evokes.

“If you love Barbie, you’re going to love it, if you hate Barbie, you’re going to love it,” Robbie says. “But if you just like a good movie, you’re going to love it.”

In Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall, the fans are definitely primed to love it.

“I have such a deep connection with Barbie,” says Hooker, still holding her doll. “I played with her as a kid and [continued] throughout high school. I was a bit judged for that but Barbie is coming back around. And it’s validating for me.”

Barbie Tour 2023

The first-ever World of Barbie exhibit in the United States opens on April 14 at Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, California. The world’s largest manufacturer of toys, Mattel collaborated with the world’s largest management organization for sports, fashion and events to create this unprecedented immersive experience.

Fans of all ages will be able to experience the 20,000-square-foot attraction which features a life-size Barbie Dreamhouse, interactive rooms showcasing different Barbie careers and even the chance to drive a full-size Barbie Camper Van.

Visitors will be encouraged to “dream big” by Barbie’s example and choose careers in science, design, music production, space exploration and more.

The aesthetically breathtaking presentation will also include a one-of-a-kind Barbie display where visitors can discover more about the history of the world’s most popular doll and explore how she, her Dreamhouse and her vehicles have changed through time.

The cousins took advantage of the many photo opportunities presented by the exhibition with pictures being taken of them practically everywhere. This celebration is in anticipation of the release of the upcoming Barbie film next month.

If you’re feeling adventurous, go to the space center, where you can take a journey through the galaxy in Barbie’s space shuttle. There are opportunities to interact with mission control, track objects on the radar, and listen to sounds of space through the audio transference device.

And I was holding onto a bar. But that’s it. I wasn’t in a harness or anything like that. Meet 'Scary Barbie,' a black hole slaughtering a star in the brightest way possible

'Scary Barbie' is an incredibly bright cosmic object that has been burning for two years, and it has yet to sputter out.

Astronomers have detected one of the longest, brightest and most energetic cosmic objects ever observed — and they've named it "Scary Barbie," in part due to its terrifying power.

The remote object, an astonishingly bright flash of light that has lasted for more than two years, was discovered lurking inside an enormous data set gathered by computer-guided telescopes. The data revealed that Scary Barbie was born from the final death throes of a star being torn to shreds by a supermassive black hole .

After finding the brightly burning patch of sky in the data and cross-referencing it with observations made by other telescopes, the astronomers realized they had stumbled across one of the most powerful cosmic explosions ever witnessed. They reported their findings April 17 on the preprint server  arXiv , and their paper has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

"It's absurd. If you take a typical supernova and multiply it a thousand times, we're still not at how bright this is — and supernovas are among the most luminous objects in the sky," co-author  Danny Milisavljevic , an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Purdue University,  said in a statement . "This is the most energetic phenomenon I have ever encountered."

Black holes feed upon unfortunate stars that cross their paths, using tidal forces exerted by their immense gravitational pulls. As the star is reeled ever closer to the black hole's maw, the gravity affecting the regions of the star closer to the black hole is far stronger than that acting on the star's farside. This disparity " spaghettifies " the star into a long, noodle-like string that gets tightly wound around the black hole layer by layer — like spaghetti around a fork. 

This noodle of hot plasma then quickly accelerates around the black hole and spins out into an enormous jet of energy and matter, which produces a distinctive bright beam of light — known as a transient event — that optical, X-ray and radio-wave telescopes can detect.

Because Scary Barbie's light came from a remote region of the sky — traveling around 7.7 billion years across the expanding fabric of space-time — astronomers didn't spot the event directly. Instead, by developing a machine-learning system called Recommender Engine For Intelligent Transient Tracking, the researchers combed through data from many observations before finding the extremely bright light source. By using the Lick Observatory in California and the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, the researchers were better able to characterize the light as coming from a transient event. 

But Scary Barbie — a nickname made by appending its randomly assigned alphanumeric name, ZTF20abrbeie, with a reference to its frightening power — is weird even among other rare and extreme astronomical events. It is much brighter than any other transient event the astronomers could compare it to, and, while transient events usually last only weeks or months, Scary Barbie has already burned incandescently for more than two years, with no indication it will sputter out.

The astronomers said further observations of Scary Barbie, possibly using the Hubble Space Telescope and the  James Webb Space Telescope , could enable them to snap some high-resolution images of the incredibly rare cosmic outburst.

"There are few things in the universe that can be so powerful, reactions that can be this long-lived," Milisavljevic said. "Discoveries like this really open our eyes to the fact that we are still uncovering mysteries and exploring wonders in the universe — things no one has ever seen before."

The singer, who co-wrote “What Was I Made For?” with brother-collaborator Finneas for Greta Gerwig’s movie, finally has time to talk about how tiring it was to promote the song and attend all those awards ceremonies.

“Bro, nobody can get enough of me,” she told Rolling Stone . “Every second of every day is Barbie, Barbie, Barbie, Barbie, Barbie, which is great, but as soon as the Oscars are over and I lose, I’m going the f— away. I’m literally gone.”

She did not, in fact, lose the Academy Award for original song, and she and Finneas became the youngest two-time winners in Oscars history . The duo also picked up a Golden Globe and a Grammy for the hit .

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

The Harry Potter tour in Leavesden is a big money spinner for Warner Bros.

Britain's Harry Potter movie tour has generated more than $1 billion of revenue since it opened 12 years ago according to its latest financial statements which show that sales doubled to a record $184.4 million (£149.1 million) in 2022 as the end of pandemic restrictions cast a powerful spell on the attraction.

The tour is set inside two cream-coloured cavernous soundstages at Leavesden Studios on the outskirts of London. Owned by media giant Warner Bros. Discovery WBD , Leavesden was originally an aircraft factory before it was converted into a movie studio in 1994 so that James Bond flick GoldenEye could film there.

Warner bought Leavesden in 2010 making it the first studio to have a permanent European base since Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the 1940s. Leavesden re-opened in 2012 after Warner invested more than $123.7 million (£100 million) in the site. Since then it has been home to well over 50 productions including all eight Potter films, the three Fantastic Beasts spin-offs and last year's highest-grossing movie, Barbie .

The studio generates 39.7% of Leavesden's total revenue which rose by $87.5 million (£70.7 million) to a record $305.8 million (£247.2 million) in the year to 31 December 2022 as we revealed in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper. The increase was entirely driven by the tour as studio revenue dipped 2.9% to $121.3 million (£98.1 million).

Over the past few years soaring inflation and the cost of living crisis has caused consumers to cut streaming subscriptions leading to studios scaling back the number of shows in production.

It didn't stop there as Leavesden faced the challenge of strikes in Hollywood when actors and writers downed their tools for more than six months last year in a bid to boost the royalties they receive. Warner is still counting the cost of this and on February 23 announced that revenue for the fourth quarter of 2023 was down 7% to $10.2 billion partly driven by strike-induced production delays. On the day of the announcement its shares closed 10% down at $8.61, almost the lowest price since the group was created by the merger of AT&T’s T WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc in April 2022.

The impact is being felt far beyond the studios as special effects firm Framestore, which created the spellbinding visuals in the Potter movies, said it expects margins "to be impacted" by the strikes in 2023.

In contrast, the tour behind the scenes of the Potter movies has been a dream ticket for Warner. Leavesden's net profit more than doubled last year to $87.8 million (£71 million) which was largely driven by the tour given that the studio's revenue reversed. Since 2012 Leavesden has generated total net profits of $589.6 million (£476.7 million) and paid $289.4 million (£234 million) of dividends to Warner.

Since it opened 12 years ago more than 18 million people have streamed through the tour's turnstiles generating a total of $1.2 billion (£935.8 million) of revenue – 67.5% more than the studio has made.

The tour is filled with props and sets from the movies with the latest addition being Professor Sprout's Greenhouse which opened in summer 2022. From the outside, the giant greenhouse appears to be in the grip of a giant vine which covers the walls inside. Its tendrils spread into flower boxes where plants seem to sprout from them. Visitors can uproot them to reveal a squealing shrub as Harry and his chums did in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets .

As we recently revealed , the tour has been so successful that Warner has invested more than $115 million in its first overseas outpost which opened in Tokyo last year and is 50% bigger than its British counterpart.

Leavesden operates the Japanese facility as well as the wildly popular chain of Potter shops and the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage show which premiered in London in 2016 to critical acclaim. Since then it has expanded to five other countries and is still growing as the financial statements reveal that "in 2022 the company invested in another production of the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ."

Despite the logjam in Hollywood, Leavesden too is expanding. Last year it announced plans to build 11 new sound stages which will increase production capacity by more than 50% and will create 4,000 direct and indirect jobs. It is expanding to stay in the game in the face of increasing competition.

Britain has become a popular location for filming thanks to its generous fiscal benefits which give studios a reimbursement of up to 25.5% of the amount they spend in the country. It explains why Shepperton Studios, just outside London, is planning a 1.2 million square feet expansion which will make it the world's second-biggest studio.

Likewise, nearby Pinewood plans to spend $1.6 billion (£1.3 billion) on new facilities including a studio tour which will put it in even more direct competition with Leavesden. Over the past 80 years Pinewood has been home to everything from the Pink Panther and Paddington to Superman and Star Wars so it may take more than the wave of a magic wand to beat.
