Star Trek 4 potential release date, cast and everything you need to know

Star Trek 4 cast: Who's going to be in Star Trek 4?

Star trek 4 plot: what's going to happen in star trek 4, star trek 4 trailer: any star trek 4 footage yet.

Star Trek 4 has edged a little closer to finally happening, as the movie has found a new writer .

In March 2024, it was reported that Steve Yockey – who developed The Flight Attendant – had been hired to write a new draft of the fourth movie, which is intended to bring back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña.

This is separate from the other two Star Trek movies in the works: a prequel movie directed by Toby Haynes and Star Trek: Discovery spin-off Section 31 , which finished filming in March 2024.

Back to Star Trek 4, though, and the long-gestating movie finally looked to be on track in February 2022 when it was announced that JJ Abrams was returning to produce with Matt Shakman directing, to the surprise of the cast as much as the fans.

Unfortunately, Shakman left the movie in August 2022 to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel instead . And then in September 2022, Paramount took the movie off the release calendar entirely, but at least it sounds like a director search is ongoing.

In March 2023, JJ Abrams – who has produced all three movies in the reboot trilogy and directed two of them – said that a search for a director is ongoing.

"I will say it's the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one," he told Esquire . Of course, Pine also called the franchise "cursed" so it depends how hopeful you feel like being.

All we really know right now is that Star Trek 4 is in active development at Paramount, even if we don't know exactly when it will be released.

But while we wait, here's everything you need to know about the (potential) return of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek 4 .

When can we expect Star Trek 4?

Once upon a time, Star Trek 4 was scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 22, 2023.

Of course, that never happened, and as mentioned above, Star Trek 4 hasn't got a confirmed release date as of April 2024. There's no rumours either about when it could reappear on the schedule.

In June 2022, prior to Shakman leaving the project, Paramount boss Brian Robbins did confirm development was under way on the fourth Star Trek . "We're deep into it with JJ Abrams, and it feels like we're getting close to the starting line and excited about where we're going creatively," he said .

However, in November 2022, star Zachary Quinto told The Independent : "At this point, I honestly have very little attachment to it.

"All of us would like to come back and make another movie, but I’ve learnt to only get excited about things I know are actually real. And there's nothing about a fourth Star Trek movie that feels real right now."

Other people involved seem to have faith in the project moving forward, though, and hopefully a new writer joining is a positive step.

All we can do is watch this space.

star trek

Even when Star Trek 4 was originally being released in December 2023, it hadn't been 100% confirmed that the reboot cast would be back.

That being said, during his June 2022 announcement, Robbins did say he knew audience "wants that cast in this movie" – referring to the reboot cast.

So, if it ever does come to fruition, we'd be surprised if it was with a brand-new cast. You can likely then expect the returns of Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).

Urban certainly seems keen for a return, although he also revealed in March 2022 that, like Pine, he hadn't read a script yet . "I would love to work with those guys again; so much fun, the best hang. We'll see," he enthused.

It all feels very up in the air, as per Quinto's quotes, but that doesn't mean we can't hope.

The initial plan for the fourth movie was to have a timey-wimey adventure that featured Chris Pine's James T Kirk somehow joining forces with his long-dead dad, played by Chris Hemsworth .

Hemsworth opened up in May 2019 about why he stepped away from the movie , saying: "I didn't feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet. I didn't want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table."

It's unclear if this new version of Star Trek 4 plans to bring Hemsworth back or if it's gone in a totally new direction, but Hemsworth seems open to a return for the fourth movie.

In October 2022, Rings of Power bosses JD Payne and Patrick McKay teased more about what their original idea for the fourth movie was going to be. "The conceit was that through a cosmic quirk in the Star Trek world, they were the same age," McKay explained.

We also don't know yet whether the new movie will recast Pavel Chekov following Anton Yelchin's tragic death in 2016. "It's bittersweet because we are coming together for a fourth time, and one of us is no longer with us," Saldaña said in March 2022 .

"But we honestly feel that going back and keeping the Star Trek family together is a way to really keep him alive in our thoughts and our hearts."

Star Trek Beyond Zoe Saldana as Uhura

Right now, we don't have any confirmed plot details for the fourth movie, and it's not clear how closely it'll follow on from the ending of Star Trek Beyond .

The third movie ended with Kirk declining the promotion to vice admiral and staying as the captain of the USS Enterprise. Spock also chose to remain in Starfleet and reignited his romance with Uhura.

As the movie ends, they're all set to continue their mission on a brand-new USS Enterprise after the previous one was destroyed during the movie's events.

star trek beyond trailer grab

It means that the fourth movie can go anywhere. But, for Pine, he believes that whatever the plot is, it shouldn't try to compete with Marvel .

"I've always thought that Star Trek should operate in the zone that is smaller. You know, it's not a Marvel appeal. It's like, let's make the movie for the people that love this group of people, that love this story, that love Star Trek ," he said.

"Let's make it for them and then, if people want to come to the party, great. But make it for a price and make it, so that if it makes a half-billion dollars, that's really good."

You're kidding, right? We'd love to get all timey-wimey ourselves and show you a trailer for Star Trek 4 from the future, but we're stuck in the Mirror Universe.

Star Trek 4: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know

Star Trek 4 is stuck in drydock, but that doesn't keep us from hoping. Here is everything we know about the movie.

Star Trek 4 is shrouded in mystery and apparent defeat. The sequel to Star Trek: Beyond on J.J. Abram’s Kelvin timeline is currently stuck in dry dock. There have been plans for Paramount to make the movie for years , and sometimes, it even seems like they’re going to do it. Fans were hopeful in 2022 when it looked like things were about to go ahead, but when the stars aligned, director Matt Shakman stepped down from the project to work on Marvel’s Fantastic Four reboot instead.

Trekkies everywhere were heartbroken. Although Paramount continues to produce good Star Trek series like Strange New Worlds and Discovery , it doesn’t look like we’re going to get that big blockbuster film any time soon. That being said, hope still exists. Star Trek 4 is one of Paramount’s biggest, untapped titles, and the stars are still up for another journey into the final frontier. Things are looking dark, but somewhere, out there in the vastness of Hollywood, there is a way to make this movie. Fans still whisper, and celebrities still talk, and time and time again, it appears as if Star Trek 4 is emerging from the water.

Updated January 22, 2024: This article has been updated by Jessica Peerez with more recent information regarding Star Trek 4, the development hurdles of the film and the plans that Paramount Pictures appears to have for the franchise.

Star Trek 4: The Plot

There were a lot of rumors about the plot coming up to Star Trek 4 ’s removal from Paramount’s release slate. When Paramount first announced the sequel, the intention was to have it bring back Chris Hemsworth, who, since his small role in the first film had blown up as a Hollywood superstar thanks to his role as Thor in the MCU, they wanted him to reprise his role from the 2009 film as George Kirk, James T. Kirk’s father. This version of the script made it far enough through development to actually reach the actors. The pitch was to do Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade but with Star Trek , where when the Enterprise investigates the wreckage of the Kelvin, they find that an exact copy of George Kirk was stored in the ship transporter so he is able to return to life at the exact moment before his death and much of the movie would have been how the two Kirks do not get along as neither of them is what the other expected before needing to accept one another for who they are. In an interview with Josh Horowitz , Hemsworth explained how he felt about the story:

"It wasn’t what I was thinking it would have been or could have been. And I thought, ‘Oh, cool, let’s figure that out and keep going’ and then I think everyone just got busy and so on. It’d be a bit weird now to flash back to your father and ‘Why is he so much older than when he died?’"

Not only did Hemsworth pass on the project, but negotiations broke down in terms of pay with both him and star Chris Pine. Paramount then decided to pivot, bringing on Noah Hawley ( Fargo, Legion ) to write a new Star Trek film with a new cast of characters. J.J. Abrams was even having conversations with Quentin Tarantino about giving him an opportunity to write a Star Trek movie . While Tarantino did begin work on a script, he eventually passed on the project as he plans to retire after ten movies and he did not want Star Trek to be his final movie. Meanwhile, Hawley's pitch was scrapped as the story involved a plague, and following the COVID-19 pandemic, Paramount was not keen on that idea. It was then decided to make a direct sequel to Star Trek Beyond and bring back the original cast.

In July 2021, Matt Shakman was hired to direct Star Trek 4 . Then, in February 2022, when Paramount Pictures made the big splashy announcement that the original cast of the three previous Star Trek movies would return after it appeared years of contract negotiations had held them up, they had nothing. Even the stars and their agents were surprised that they were going ahead with the movie when, apparently, they hadn’t told a soul. The plan was to secure investors first and sort the details out later, which they did, eventually. When writers started sitting down at their laptops, there was much talk about where a story could go.

The studio seemed confident in the film and dated it for December 23, 2023, to take the slot that was previously held by Star Wars: Rogue Squadron , which had recently been vacated due to creative differences between Lucasfilm and director Patty Jenkins. While it felt like they would have little time, many fans were hoping they could make the release date. But in August 2022, Shakman would drop out of Star Trek 4 in favor of directing Fantastic Four , and Paramount removed Star Trek 4 from their release schedule.

Despite the stumbles in its journey, repeated delays, and the dismay of hopeful fans, Star Trek 4 appears not to have been fully scrapped yet. In September 2023, screenwriter Lindsey Anderson Beer confirmed that Star Trek 4 is still moving forward. The fourth film will reportedly be the final chapter of the main series. With no new information to dispute the claim as of January 2024, it appears that the fourth installment might still make it to screens. However, with the lack of information regarding a concrete plot or cast and Beer having since left the project , Star Trek 4 might have a long road ahead before viewers can once again join the USS Enterprise on an adventure as now Paramount Pictures is shifting to a new prequel film.

Star Trek 4: The Cast

The original hope for the movie — no matter which way the plot went — was to get as much of the original cast back on board as possible. Although talks fell through with Chris Hemsworth and his part in the film, Chris Pine ended up making a solid deal to return as Captain James T. Kirk . Zachary Quinto had been confirmed as Spock, and John Cho would come back as Sulu. Simon Pegg, even though he helped write Star Trek: Beyond and played Scotty, made no commitments either way, but it would be likely that he would return due to his major involvement with the films.

Karl Urban, who plays Bones, said that he had some scheduling conflicts due to his work on The Boys , but now that the schedule has changed, his participation remains to be seen. Zoe Saldaña has commented on some frustration for working in so many franchise films, but she would return if the movie was able to pull itself together. Of course, due to the untimely death of Anton Yelchin , Chekov's character would not be recast but instead respectfully written out of the movie.

Star Trek: Everything Else

It has now been nearly eight years since the last Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, came to screens. Uncertainty has continuously clouded the fourth film, and despite its status as still being in active development, Paramount looks to be moving ahead with a brand-new film. According to Variety , the new film has Andor 's Toby Haynes in the director's seat, with Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script. J. J. Abrams's Bad Robot will be produced.

Details regarding the plot and cast of the new movie have not been confirmed yet. However, it is set to be an origin story that takes place decades before the events of 2009's Star Trek. It has been confirmed that the new film will also be an expansion of the Star Trek universe.

Related: Star Trek 4 Should Be Directed by Michael Giacchino, and Here's Why

The status of a prequel film is interesting, as Star Trek 2009 begins with the timeline being split off, forming the new Kelvin timeline. So, any prequel to Star Trek would also technically exist in the original timeline canon, and there have been plenty of those recently, including Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , and, of course, Star Trek: Enterprise . This would mean the events of the film would have to line up with both timelines before the splinter point of the 2009 film.

Release Date

The production and development journey for Star Trek 4 has definitely not been easy. The film was initially set to start production in 2022 and was slated for release on December 23, 2023 , before being scrapped. That release date vacancy allowed for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to become the big release of the holiday movie season for 2023 that Star Trek 4 hoped to accomplish.

The film now has no release date. However, despite the lack of an end to their anticipation in sight, fans can find some consolation in the fact that Star Trek 4 is still very much alive and kicking.

They’re boldly going back.

Paramount is planning to enter negotiations for “ Star Trek ” stars Chris Pine , Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg to return to the Enterprise for their fourth tour of duty in the venerable sci-fi franchise.

The announcement was made by J.J. Abrams during the Paramount Investors Day Presentation on Feb. 15.

“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” Abrams said. “We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.”

The six actors first stepped into their respective iconic roles as Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Sulu and Scotty in 2009’s “Star Trek,” directed by Abrams, which reset the “Trek” timeline and allowed for the reboot to exist unencumbered from the hundreds of hours of “Trek” continuity that had come before. The actors returned in two sequels, 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness,” also directed by Abrams, and 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” directed by Justin Lin.

Abrams is producing the new, as-yet-untitled film through Bad Robot, with Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) directing from a screenplay by Josh Friedman (“Avatar 2”) and Cameron Squires (“WandaVision”) based on a earlier draft by Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”).

Paramount was close to bringing back this cast once before: In 2018, S.J. Clarkson (“Jessica Jones”) had signed up to direct a sequel that would have reunited Pine’s Kirk with his late father, played by Chris Hemsworth reprising his performance from the 2009 “Star Trek.” That film never materialized, however, after Paramount reportedly couldn’t close a deal with Pine and Hemsworth.

Since then, insiders say the studio has done market research to determine audience interest in the rebooted cast, given the long wait period between “Beyond” — which lost money for Paramount — and a prospective new “Trek” film. Execs determined that there was still lasting audience enthusiasm for Pine, Quinto and the rest of the cast in their established roles, which allowed the studio to feel comfortable with moving forward with bringing them back.

Paramount has also explored several other avenues for “Trek” features, none of which seem to have ultimately borne fruit. Quentin Tarantino reportedly cooled on a “Star Trek” script he was pursuing with “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith. In late 2019, Paramount tapped “Fargo” and “Legion” creator Noah Hawley to write and direct a “Trek” movie that Hawley planned to feature new actors playing new characters. But when Emma Watts became president of the Paramount Motion Picture Group a few months later, insiders say she paused all “Trek” development, including Hawley’s film , to decide how best to move forward with one of the studio’s crown jewel franchises. With Watts’ departure from Paramount in September, it’s unclear what the current “Trek” film portends for other development for the franchise, including a screenplay by “Fear the Walking Dead” co-executive producer Kalinda Vazquez .

Bringing the 2009 “Trek” cast back could prove a challenge given they’ve all had busy schedules since “Beyond.” Pine added the “Wonder Woman” franchise to his resume and he’ll next appear in Olivia Wilde’s thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” and the black-ops film “Violence of Action.” Quinto headlined the AMC series “NOS4A2,” and starred in the Broadway revival of “The Boys in the Band” and its 2020 Netflix film adaptation. Saldana continued her run as Gamora in several Marvel Studios films, including “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Avengers: Endgame”; she’ll star in “Avatar 2” this year and in “Guardians Vol. 3” in 2023. Urban appeared in 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and he’ll continue his performance as Billy Butcher on Season 3 of Amazon’s “The Boys” in June. Cho starred in acclaimed indies “Columbus” and “Searching,” and he starred in Netflix’s live-action adaption of the anime series “Cowboy Bebop.” And Pegg starred with Nick Frost on Amazon’s horror comedy series “Truth Seekers,” and he’ll reprise his role as Benji in “Mission: Impossible 7” in 2023.

One member of the 2009 “Trek” cast, however, sadly cannot join them. Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov, died in an accident in June 2016, a month before “Beyond” opened in theaters. At that film’s premiere at San Diego Comic Con, the cast, filmmakers and invited guests sat in a full minute of silence in tribute to the late actor.

Brent Lang contributed to this story.

Everything we know about Star Trek 4

Will captain kirk and co return for one more outing.

It looks like the only thing trickier than surviving a mission into deep space is getting all of your starships in a row long enough to send Star Trek 4 speeding into production.

The last time we saw Captain James T. Kirk and his pointy-eared pal Spock in action was in 2016 threequel Star Trek Beyond . Ever since then, updates on their next adventure have been sporadic at best, with news of stand-alone spin-offs from critically acclaimed talent and even a new prequel story drifting in and out of focus like passing asteroids.

Multiple writers and directors have boarded Star Trek 4 only to hit eject before any meaningful progress has been made, leaving this sci-fi tentpole franchise lost in space. However, a promising new update suggests that the crew of the USS Enterprise could be gearing up for a new mission in the not-too-distant future.

With that in mind, here’s everything we know about Star Trek 4 so far…

When will Star Trek 4 be released?

Star Trek 4 is currently without a release date. In fact, the film hasn’t even entered production so we’ll likely have to wait a few years before we can see the Enterprise crew back on the big screen.

What is the plot of Star Trek 4?

As it stands, we don’t have any details of what adventure Star Trek 4 will send audiences on. That said, we do know that the fourth film in the franchise is set to be the final outing for this particular chapter of the Star Trek story that J.J. Abrams started in 2009.

To say that Star Trek 4 has had a long and varied gestation process so far is a bit of an understatement. Initially, talk of a fourth film began before the release of its predecessor Star Trek Beyond and not long afterwards, auteur filmmaker Quentin Tarantino was reported to have pitched his own idea to Abrams in 2017.

This new take on the Star Trek story was being developed separately from Abrams’ primary universe and was reported to have an R-rated tone thanks to its violence and language. Despite gathering a group of writers to work on the project, Tarantino’s Star Trek ultimately hasn’t come to fruition just yet.

Madame Web helmer S.J. Clarkson was the next person to be hired to direct but dropped off of the film when negotiations surrounding the return of Kirk star Chris Pine and his on-screen father Chris Hemsworth fell apart.

Fargo’s Noah Hawley was then enlisted to take the franchise forward in a new direction that would’ve been starkly different from what had come before but involved the franchise’s same ensemble cast however his plans fell apart too, leading him to start work on the new Alien series instead.

Prison Break writer Kalinda Vazquez was the next person to be linked to Star Trek 4 before she was replaced by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s long-time director Matt Shankman. He was set to direct a new story written by Pet Sematary: Bloodlines scribe Lindsay Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, writer of 2018’s Tomb Raider reboot.

Unfortunately, cast negotiations dragging on hampered the development process and it wasn’t long before Shakman left the project to tackle Marvel’s Fantastic Four reboot instead. Despite this, Beer offered an update in September 2023 that suggested that her and Robertson-Dworet’s story was still in active development.

“It's still on the tracks,” Beer told Collider . “I love that project, and it was another one that I had to hop off of to direct [Pet Sematary: Bloodlines], and that was a hard thing to do. But I love everybody involved with that project.”

The franchise experienced some promising signs of life in March 2024 when The Flight Attendant screenwriter Steve Yockey was enlisted by Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures to write a new Star Trek 4 script. While story details are non-existent, it’s believed that Yockey’s story is still planned to be the final outing for Abrams’ crew.

Will there be a Star Trek prequel movie?

Yes, a stand-alone Star Trek prequel movie is also in development from Abrams’ Bad Robot production company.

Set decades before the 2009 Star Trek reboot, the project is described as an origin story that will be written by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter's Seth Grahame-Smith and Andor director Todd Haynes.

Who will be starring in Star Trek 4?

If Star Trek 4 does finally come together, the project will have to reunite the crew of the USS Enterprise. That includes Pine’s Captain James Kirk, Zachary Quinto’s Spock, Karl Urban’s Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Zoe Saldana’s Nyota Uhura, Simon Pegg’s Montgomery “Scotty” Scott and John Cho’s Hikaru Sulu.

Pavel Chekov star Anton Yelchin tragically passed away following a freak accident in 2016 and it is unclear how the sequel might address his absence.

Bringing the movie’s crew together on deck might be harder than it sounds, with Quinto recently describing the process as “complicated.”

“I think there’s a lot of other stuff, creative things,” he said during a convention appearance in summer 2023. “The fact that anything good gets made is kind of miracle.

“I think it’s about different people having different agendas and ideas about what it will be. And I don’t know if and when it will happen... And if it coalesces again and we come back and we're able to do it, wonderful. If not, we had a great run.”

Meanwhile, Pine has also shared his frustrations surrounding delays and being able to see up-to-date scripts. He even called the sequel “cursed” following its trouble getting off the ground.

“After the last one came out and didn't do the $1 billion that everyone wanted it to do, and then Anton [Yelchin] passed away, I don't know. It just... feels like it’s cursed,” he told Esquire .

“I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors. I would say it's frustrating. It doesn't really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it's how it's always been. I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise. But to try to change the system in which things are created – I just can'’ do it. I don’t have the energy.”

Speaking to ComicBook.com in January 2024, Saldana said she would be “grateful” for one more outing with her galaxy exploring colleagues.

“I mean, I heard what you heard in the trades. I just heard they’re gearing up to do a new one with a younger, sort of, take on it... I don't know if it’s from the before or the after, but that they really still hope to grab all of us veterans and bring us back for one last round.”

“Listen, I know it’s a lot to wrangle a whole bunch of people with busy schedules,” she added. “But working with J.J. Abrams, and for J.J. Abrams at Bad Robot, was always just a wonderful and beautiful experience for me. So, if I get to do that one last time, I would be so grateful.”

Saldana reiterated these thoughts during a chat with The Discourse podcast in April 2024, saying “I still have hope”. She added that Star Trek “should live for a very long time, whether or not us as the original remake cast can come back. I don’t know, but I certainly hope so.”

If the crew of the USS Enterprise manage to get their act together, only then can then start to discuss who might be playing their new big-bad plus anyone else who may return – or be introduced – in Star Trek 4.

'Star Trek' '4' in Development with 'Original Cast,' Says J.J. Abrams: 'We're Thrilled'

J.J. Abrams says the fourth Star Trek film "will be shooting by the end of the year" and "will be featuring our original cast and some new characters"

Will Chris Pine , Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldana and the rest of the Star Trek cast be beaming back up to the USS Enterprise soon?

According to J.J. Abrams , who directed the 2009 reboot and its 2013 sequel, the "original cast" will be back for a fourth movie "that will be shooting by the end of the year," he said Tuesday at the Paramount Investors Day presentation, per Entertainment Weekly .

The team is "hard at work" on the movie that will include both the "original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you've just never seen before," said Abrams, 55.

"We're thrilled about this film," he added. "We have a bunch of other stories that we're talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can't wait for you to see what we're cooking up."

Abrams concluded with one of the famous lines from the series: "Until then, live long and prosper."

Star Trek 4 will be directed by WandaVision 's Matt Shakman, after the first two movies were helmed by Abrams and the third, Star Trek Beyond , was directed by Justin Lin .

EW reports that the studio has not yet entered negotiations with Pine, 41, Quinto, 44, Saldana, 43, or many of the other original cast members, including John Cho , Simon Pegg and Karl Urban. ( Anton Yelchin , who appeared as Chekhov in the first three movies, died in 2016 .)

According to EW , an early draft of the script for Star Trek 4 was penned by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, known for their work on Sierra Burgess Is a Loser and Captain Marvel , respectively.

The screenplay, by Avatar 2 's Josh Friedman and WandaVision 's Cameron Squires, will be based on Beer and Robertson-Dworet's.

Fargo series creator Noah Hawley was previously announced as director for the fourth installment in the revamped franchise, in November 2019.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , Pine, Quinto and Saldana were expected to return to their roles of Jim Kirk, Spock and Nyota Uhura, respectively. (Reps for the three actors did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment at the time.)

Quentin Tarantino previously expressed interested in writing and directing his own take on Star Trek — he previously pitched his Star Trek idea to Paramount — although his friend and Star Trek scribe Pegg, 52, joked that Tarantino's version wouldn't be " Pulp Fiction in space" in a 2018 interview.

In December 2019, Tarantino, 58, said he had "taken the pressure off" himself to make a Star Trek project his 10th and final film, noting to Consequence and Sound , "I think I'm steering away from [it] ."

Star Trek 4 - What We Know So Far

Star Trek Chris Pine

Star Trek looks to be beaming up.

On November 19, 2019, Paramount Pictures confirmed that a fourth installment in the current Star Trek cinematic universe is ready to set its phasers again (via  Variety ). With the franchise teetering on the edge after the box office flop that was 2016's Star Trek Beyond , and with fans decidedly underwhelmed by what that flick had to offer, there's plenty to make up for with  Star Trek 4 — and just as many expectations to meet.

It's been almost a year since the latest  Star Trek project was  "indefinitely canceled"  (for a multitude of reasons ) in January 2019, but things are a go once again over at Paramount after extensive changes to the original story have been made. In fact, that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the major developments regarding  Star Trek 4  – with reports that there's a director ready and waiting to start filming, along with some familiar faces boarding the cast.

Here's everything we know so far about  Star Trek 4 .

Who's the director of Star Trek 4?

Star Trek 4 originally had S.J. Clarkson lined up to take the director's chair . With a delay in making the gig official due to reported complicated in negotiations, Clarkson walked away from the project at the beginning of 2019, leaving the movie without a captain to steer the Enterprise. Clarkson's departure also meant that the franchise lost what would have been its first-ever female director .

In November 2019, it was announced that Noah Hawley, best known for his work on Fargo and Legion , had been called up to direct the next Star Trek film. Hawley hasn't only been tapped to direct, however; he'll also help write the script, as well as produce the flick through his production banner 26 Keys. J.J. Abrams, the man behind the Star Trek franchise reboot and the director of 2009's  Star Trek and 2013's  Star Trek Into Darkness , will also return to produce via his company Bad Robot.

Does Star Trek 4 have a release date?

Considering  Star Trek 4 is only just starting to formally come together, there's no official release date set as of November 2019. The film is very much still in pre-production, but assuming the  Star Trek 4 team manages to finish a script and get an entire cast together — neither of which ever happens overnight — filming will hopefully start sometime in 2020. Give or take at least a year for filming and post-production, and it's possible the Enterprise crew could be back on the big screen in the summer of 2021 at the earliest.

Who's in the cast of Star Trek 4, and what's the plot?

Initially, the plot of  Star Trek 4 would have seen Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) experiencing a time-travel reunion with his long-dead father, George Kirk ( Chris Hemsworth ), who was shown perishing aboard the Federation starship USS Kelvin during a battle with the Romulans at the start of 2009's  Star Trek .

Unfortunately, that plan had to be nixed when both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth  walked away from the negotiating table at the end of 2018, reportedly for monetary reasons. According to  The Hollywood Reporter , Pine and Hemsworth felt that Paramount was "reneging" on the salary deals they apparently had in place, "forcing them to take pay cuts as they try to budget a movie that is following a mediocre performer." In May 2019, Hemsworth stepped forward to offer another  reason for his  Star Trek 4  exit : "I didn't feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet. I didn't want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table."

Per  Screen Rant , Pine "failed to reach an agreement with Paramount to return at the time of the original negotiations. Fortunately for fans,  Variety  is reporting that Pine has since reached an agreement with the studio and will be reprising his role as Captain Kirk in  Star Trek 4 . Pine certainly won't the only familiara face circling back to the Star Trek  movie franchise : Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (Bones), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), and Simon Pegg (Scotty) are all reportedly set to reprise their respective roles in  Star Trek 4 .

As with most blockbusters these days, plot details for Star Trek 4 are being kept tightly under wraps as Paramount works to get a full cast and crew credited to the film. What does seem to be a sure thing is that the forthcoming movie will be a follow-up to the story Abrams started to tell in 2009, and not at all related to Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek film , which he's been connected to since 2017.

What we can likely say with certainty, though, is that James T. Kirk probably won't be reuniting with the father he never got a chance to meet. Hemsworth appeared only in the opening scene of the Star Trek reboot in 2009 — dying as the Romulans attacked his ship, resulting in an explosion just minutes after his son was born. With Hemsworth turning down the offer to return to the franchise, and with no word on whether he's changed his mind in that regard, it seems a fair bet that storyline won't be explored.

Star Trek Actor Zoe Saldana Still Hopeful For Star Trek 4

  • Zoe Saldana remains hopeful about the fourth Star Trek movie, expressing interest in seeing the original cast return to the franchise.
  • Despite setbacks and changes in directors, recent reports suggest that Star Trek 4 is back on track with new screenwriter Steve Yockey.
  • Other Star Trek projects are in development, including a prequel to the reboot movies, leaving fans curious about the future of the franchise.

One prominent Star Trek actor remains optimistic about the fourth movie in the franchise even when most of the fans have lost faith in Paramount bringing the series back on the big screen.

Zoe Saldaña garnered a lot of praise for her portrayal of Uhura in three Star Trek movies. Although all three movies turned out to be massive successes at the box office, Paramount had a miserable time bringing the fourth movie to fruition. For many years, stars of the previous Star Trek movies have addressed the possibility of another movie in the series. Now, Saldana has joined the conversation and revealed what she feels about the franchise’s future.

Star Trek Fans Notice First Contact Music Played During A Historic Moment

Speaking on The Playlist’s podcast, The Discourse , Saldana revealed that she is still hopeful for the fourth Star Trek movie. The Guardians of the Galaxy star also noted that despite tight working schedules, makers try their best to bring everyone on board. She also hopes to see the original cast return for the upcoming movie. Saldana said, “ I still have hope . I had a wonderful experience through and through and through the three times that I was a part of that team. I know that they’re always trying to sort of aim to wrangle everybody together , but I also know that Paramount is working on a new sort of fresh take on Star Trek , which I think is such a wonderful franchise that should live for a very long time, whether or not us as the original remake cast can come back . I don’t know, but I certainly hope so.”

After the success of Star Trek Beyond in 2016, the makers wanted to step up the game. In 2018, it was announced that SJ Clarkson would be helming the fourth movie, making her the first female filmmaker to tackle a Star Trek film. However, in January 2019, Star Trek 4 was reported to be canceled. Meanwhile, in late 2019, a massive development took place and it was revealed that Noah Hawley has signed on to write and direct the fourth movie. Two years later, in 2021, Hawley didn’t remain attached to the project and once again, the film had no director. Last year, Chris Pine, who played Captain Kirk in the previous three Trek movies , revealed that he didn’t know anything about the fourth film and its development. As time passed, fans seemed to forget about the movie.

However, a week ago, a report suggested that Star Trek 4 is back on track with a new screenwriter. As per the report, Steve Yockey will be writing the screenplay for the upcoming film. However, none of the original cast knows about what’s happening with the franchise. In November 2023, Pine once again claimed that he didn’t know anything about Star Trek 4 and hadn’t read any script. Additionally, there are ongoing initiatives to develop further movies within the expansive universe of Star Trek , extending beyond the fourth installment featuring the original cast. Earlier this year, another movie in the Star Trek universe was announced. Toby Haynes, known for directing Star Wars: Andor , will helm the project, while Seth Grahame-Smith will pen the screenplay. The film serves as a prequel to the Star Trek reboot movies. As of now, there’s no news if any of the original cast members will make an appearance in the movie. But it would be interesting to see familiar faces on the big screen.

All of the Star Trek movies are available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek is a space exploration franchise originally created by Gene Roddenberry. The series has spanned shows like The Original Series, The Next Generation, and Voyager. More recently, developer Scopely came out with Star Trek Fleet Command, a mobile title where you get to be captain of your own ship.

It’s time again to continue the cycle on the sequel to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond . Last week it was reported the long-gestating project has yet another writer , and right on queue we have one of the stars of the Kelvin movies weighing in on where Trek goes next on the big screen.

Ready for another wonderful Trek experience

Zoe Saldana is out promoting her new movie Absence of Eden , due in theaters next week. Naturally, she gets questions about some of her iconic roles including playing Nyota Uhura in 3 Star Trek movies. In an interview with The Playlist’s Discourse podcast , the actress remains optimistic about returning to Trek, saying:

“I still have hope. I had a wonderful experience through and through and through the three times that I was a part of that team.”

Saldana’s desire to return to her Star Trek role is in contrast to the MCU. In the same podcast interview, she confirmed she has no intention of returning to the role of Gamora, although she hoped the Guardians of the Galaxy series continued, possibly with Gamora being recast.

Zoe Saldana as Uhura in Star Trek Beyond (Paramount Pictures)

Screenwriter Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant ) is reportedly taking on the latest draft of the Beyond sequel.  As reported last week, Paramount has multiple Trek films in development, with a new “franchise origin story” which may be further along than Star Trek 4 . Saldana acknowledged the complicated logistics of bringing the Kelvin crew back together while also launching this new movie:

“I know that they’re always trying to sort of aim to wrangle everybody together, but I also know that Paramount is working on a new sort of fresh take on ‘Star Trek,’ which I think is such a wonderful franchise that should live for a very long time, whether or not us as the original remake cast can come back. I don’t know, but I certainly hope so.”

Unlike the Star Trek 4 project, the origin story movie already has a director ( Andor’s Toby Haynes) and a script (from Seth Grahame-Smith of The Lego Batman Movie ). Reportedly it is on track to start filming by the end of this year. Paramount has yet to put a Star Trek film on their release schedule and 2026 (the 60th anniversary year of Star Trek ) is coming up fast.

I don’t blame her for wanting to do another, particularly so if it was a pleasant experience with the rest of the cast and crew. Ms. Saldana, like the rest of her castmates, seems pretty clear eyed that they shouldn’t be turning down real work on the possibility there “might” be another Trek movie in their future.

When Simon Pegg chimes in that it’ll be mind blowing, then we’ll know it’s not happening.

I guess trying to line up all those schedules is really making it more difficult than everyone ever thought. 😊

LOL at “When Simon Pegg chimes in that it’ll be mind blowing, then we’ll know it’s not happening,” as that is so true.

She was short changed in Beyond for Bele/Lokais love child

I doubt that would’ve happened in Orci’s ST3

Er……. huh?

Just a little joke..

Reminded me more of CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR makeup … and i’ve never even seen the movie!

He means Jayla.

Aww, nobody remembers the black-and-white cookie? Look to the cookie, Elaine. Look to the cookie.

better hurry, these actors are starting to get gray hair

Lol Pine already had grey hair in Beyond.

Maybe he’ll dye his hair jet black to match Shatner in TMP

And add a BradyHawaiiCurl?

Feel sorry for this cast. They fit their roles perfectly and ST09 was a great reboot. I watched it recently and was actually surprised at how good the movie was. Better than I remembered.

But ST:ID effectively torpedoed this crew’s run. A four-year gap. Ruining Khan (to the point that the fanbase doesn’t even want ST to go there again). Special Khan blood. Tribble experiments. Carol Marcus strip scene for no reason. Third ST film in a row with a big OP villain ship. It was just…bad.

Beyond wasn’t a bad movie, but it could not get the ship back on track. Not sure if a ST4 could do any better. What could they possibly do on the back of these three Kelvin movies, that would bring in at least $400m B.O. (assuming a $150m budget).

A real shame. There was genuinely a lot of potential for the Kelvin timeline after ST09, but it was wasted.

Yep this series had so much potential back then and it was quickly squandered by the second movie by a really horrible script and a four year wait. And by the time they got to the third it really showed how directionless things truly were with the Orci firing and just truly bad marketing with Beyond. Add to the other problem a lot of hardcore fans were put off after STID and new fans had mostly moved on by then that movie’s fate was probably written after that first infamous teaser trailer.

And eight years on it’s all just been a complete waste of time with silly announcements and still no movie in sight.

Originally I really did want at least one more movie with this cast but I have stopped caring long ago. And I suspect a large number of others feels the same way now. I don’t even see the point of trying to make another one since they already stated it will be the last anyway and they want to go another direction with new films back in prime universe. Just put all your money and effort on that since clearly we’re not talking about the MCU here.

It’s been so long, I don’t even know how you would sell another Kelvin movie to a general audience.

It would have to be a stand alone project in that universe.

We’ve been over this many tines but I 100% believe it was the Orci ST3 falling apart is what caved in the film franchise , had we had Shatners return (as OG Kirk), and the canon event shattering plot of the new timeline under threat, and maybe some Klingons & Romulans (and potentially Nero/USS Kelvin cameo stuff tied back to ST09) .then the 3rd film might well have made more BO (the magic 500m?) and we’d be waiting on kelvin ST6 about now

Imo STID wasn’t as damaging as some make out, general audiences actually liked that movie , just some angry hard fans didn’t like the alt universe take on TWOK and ‘white khan’ (bc Benicio Del Toro turned it down so we got the comic book spin off about him getting Die Another Day DNA treatment lol)

You’re right. I believe STID obviously made money, hence the ST: Beyond sequel.

I didn’t have a problem with them bringing back a Kelvin version of Khan at all. Plus, it’s Benedict Cumberbatch, he’s great!

What I didn’t care for is the white-washing and obfuscation of Khan. He was Indian, not a white guy. Like the first film, they had to have a comic book series explain the discrepency.

Also, you add Carol Marcus (now with an English accent and in Starfleet, but you don’t really do anything with her and Kirk, except show that there’s some obvious attraction? Why bother with her then? Just to add sex appeal with Alice Eve in the film? Anyway, Abrams admitted they messed up some of the writing on STID. That said, STID is much better than The Rise of Skywalker. That script had holes galore and I just do not think it was a worthy end at all for the Star Wars Saga. I think they really dropped the ball there and it’s such a shame.

Actually, my biggest problem with STID was when the Enterprise was suddenly going to crash into the Earth. As a mission design guy, that still really bothers me.

We don’t need a trek movie every two years.

I would welcome a quality Trek film every two or three years. Emphasis on the word ‘quality.’ Not a remake, no ‘reimaginings.’ And get away from recasting Kirk and Spock over again. Enough already. Write an original film that respects the past. Do better.

I agree with all of this.

I had the impression that when ST09 failed to hit super blockbuster status, Abrams et al . just sort of saw it as a second tier franchise. Worth doing another one for sure, but not worth putting it on the front burner.

Except it did hit blockbuster status, beating Terminator, XMen and the Da Vinci sequel that summer

The problem is they were probably expecting at least $500 million at the time. Still enough to justify another one but yeah.

Back in 09 400m ww was considered a healthy BO take

But it didn’t make $400 million it made $385 million. I’m not trying to split hairs but it goes to the point it did JUST ENOUGH to keep making them but the hope was the next would do better, MUCH better. It did better but not certainly much better either and with a budget that was $40 million more.

I always go back to Nolan Batman movies. The first one actually did a bit less than the first Kelvin movie did and they both had the same budget. Then TDK came out 3 years later and it literally did a billion dollars and with a budget of $185 million…. five million less than STID.

That’s probably the kind of thing Paramount was hoping would happen with the sequels. Maybe not a billion dollars but you’re certainly not spending that kind of money just to do under a half a billion either.

Transformers first film was also made for $150 million and that made $750 million out of the gate.

That’s the kind of money they were probably hoping to get by the second or third one because that’s the type of money real blockbusters make. $385 million is decent but still nothing you keep making movies for with those budgets.

Im sure Par were rubbing their hands expecting around 600-700m for ID after the glowing response 09 got from moviegoers, fans, critics.. Must’ve been abit dishearting when it ‘just’ did 470m and maybe took the wind out the sails for the big anniversary

It was the lame ‘Beyond’ sequel that torpedoed the Kelvin movies. ST09 and STID did huge business, ST09 is one of the top selling blu rays of all time. Both had lucrative deals for the TV premiers too.

Beyond cost a staggering $200 mill, and it isn’t up on the screen. And, Beyond had lame competition in the form of Ghostbusters. ST09 and STID held their own against tough competition like Terminator Salvation (that franchise hadn’t been ruined yet).

Had Beyonds budget been 100-120 million, it’d be no worries to make another.

I knew something was up with Beyond when my old mates (who really weren’t Trek fans but had seen ST09 and ID at the cinema and were raving about how awesome they were) didn’t bother to go see it.. It was as if they were like meh we’re not bothered now ,(I remember one texting me about how awful the trailer looked in front of Star Wars VII saying it was trying to be like Fast & Furious with rock songs and motorbike stunts!) so yeah Beyond suffered from that terrible initial trailer (in front of the generational event of the real SWs return), and maybe how the next trailer seemed abit inconsequential/looking abit Insurrectiony/for trekkies only, (unlike all the impressive 09/ID trailers that appealed to all movie goers/fans alike),

also that summer each movie seemed disappointing so when ST came out audiences were abit burned out by lame sequels/remakes like XMen, GB, Bourne, Tarzan, ID:R etc (then again even more reason for Beyond to succeed had it been really good, whereas it was just considered another abit meh/for trekkies only). And yes in comparison 09/ID did have lots of tough competition and still did well, ST09 had XMen:Wolverine, Angels&Demons, Terminator 4 (which although was directed by McG and PG13 was the future war movie and starred Christian Bale hot off The Dark Knight!),in fact ST beat them all domestic and worldwide was only beat by A&D. likewise ID had Fast 6, Iron Man 3, Superman, World War Z as competition yet still did well considering

I bought the STID dvd only because I’ve bought all the Trek films. All the while knowing it makes a nice beer coaster.

Joker in a Batman film always give it a boost plus it was heath ledger in a spectacular version of the villain

150 mil or 165 mil budget, need 2.5 to just break even, that puts breakeven over 400, and doesn’t even count advertising, or the considerable cost of holding the finished film over for something like 6 months past its original release date to get it out in summertime. box office numbers don’t mean jack if you spend too much and 09 cost over twice as much as any previous film (tho if you count inflation, it maybe cost less than TMP’s 45 or so mil.)

Numbera IMO you have summarised the handling of the the Kelvin film series post the 09 reboot perfectly. I also thought it a shame that such potential was wasted.

IMO the only way the Kelvin TOS crew comes back for another movie is a Generations 2.0 type movie that reboots the TNG crew into their own movie franchise set in the Kelvin timeline. i’d actually be interested in a Kirk/Picard crossover movie done right / better. Tom Hardy as Kelvin timeline Picard would be my pick….him and Pine would be great together

This only reminds me how weird those Beyond posters made the actors’ faces look. Mannequin on the Move!

They should have one about both Gary Mitchell and Nomad.

It’s been too long, time to move on. This is the longest drought of Star Trek movies in theaters since the first one in 1979 (8 years since Beyond, the previous record was the 7 years between Nemesis in 2002 and JJ’s Trek in 2009). But we did have a lot of Star Trek on P+ since then, so it doesn’t feel so bad.

I am ok with just another re-boot. Perhaps with new characters set during the Romulan Wars or something.

Kelvin crew is the only viable option at this time otherwise your looking at $30-40M for new crew, new ship, new sets setup costs BEFORE you even make the movie! Too much to risk on a reboot!

Star Trek 4: Paramount Needs To Let This Sequel Die

Star Trek 4 has been in development hell for years now, and it might finally be time to abort the sequel, and head in another direction.

  • Paramount's Star Trek 4 is still in development, with challenges reuniting the cast.
  • The film has a newly appointed screenwriter, Steve Yockey.
  • It might be an idea to consider scrapping the movie to make way for a fresh start with a new cast; especially as another Star Trek movie is in the works.

The Star Trek franchise has been going strong for over sixty years now, with a string of successful movies and television series, with no signs of the sci-fi phenomenon slowing down its output anytime soon. However, plans for Paramount 's fourth entry in the current movie series have stalled ever since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016.

However, plans are still moving ahead for the fourth movie in the franchise , with some exciting updates recently, which suggest the wait for the next entry might not be too far in the future. But is it time Paramount scrapped the movie altogether and went in a completely different direction?

Star Trek 4's Continuous Delays Are Getting On Chris Pine's Nerves

Paramount's star trek 4 is still in development.

Plans are still moving ahead for the next Star Trek movie, with the principal cast set to reprise their roles in the upcoming project. However, it has proven to be a challenge to get all the cast together, with their different schedules, as well as other obstacles. The movie is gearing up to be the finale to the franchise reboot, which began in 2009 with Star Trek , followed by Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013, and Star Trek Beyond in 2016.

Star Trek Beyond raked in over $343 million worldwide at the box office, meaning a potential fourth movie is very much considered to be a profitable prospect. However, that figure was lower than the prior two movies: Star Trek Into Darkness made roughly $467 million, while Star Trek brought in $385 million, meaning it could be time to scrap the upcoming movie altogether.

The Movie now has a screenwriter

Paramount Pictures re-iterated their intent to move forward with Star Trek 4 , when they announced that screenwriter, Steve Yockey would be penning the script for the upcoming sci-fi entry. Yockey is the creator of the HBO Max series The Flight Attendant, and he's had a successful career in the industry leading up to the hit Kailey Cuoco series.

Steve's Jockey's Writing Credits:

  • Awkward (2014) 1 episode
  • Scream: The T.V Series (2016) 3 episodes
  • Supernatural (2016-2019) 31 episodes
  • Doom Patrol (2021) 1 episode
  • The Flight Attendant (2020-2022) 16 episodes

Why Star Trek 4 Needs to be shut down

Difficulties reuniting the cast.

It has proven difficult to get the original cast back together for a third sequel, due to a number of different factors. There were rumors that talks broke down due to salary conflicts with the main actors , as well as the careers of Chris Pine, Zoe Saldaña, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban all going from strength to strength in the years since Star Trek Beyond was released in 2016, with scheduling conflicts reportedly being a big issue.

Another factor when considering another sequel in the Star Trek movie franchise, was the untimely death of Anton Yelchin in 2016. Yelchin played Chekov in all three movies, and was very much a fan favorite. It would be unwise to re-cast his role, but it could also cause some story issues trying to explain his absence in the upcoming sequel.

Too long between sequels

Nearly eight years have passed since the release of the last Star Trek movie, and that is a long time in Hollywood, with fans potentially losing interest in this iteration of the franchise, meaning it might've been too long between sequels.

There's an argument for letting this sequel die, to make way for the next generation of Star Trek fans , to experience new stories with a brand-new cast, rather than re-visiting this universe, and characters who have faded in the memories of audiences.

Paramount has another Star Trek movie in the works

In addition to Star Trek 4 still being on the horizon, Paramount is also working on another new Star Trek movie from Andor director Toby Haynes and The Lego Batman Movie writer Seth Grahame-Smith. It is reportedly set to be an origin story for the franchise with an entirely new cast.

The existence of this movie could create confusion for fans, and it might make more sense to scrap plans for Star Trek 4 in favor of a fresh start, seen as a new iteration is officially in pre-production anyway. However, Star Trek fans are used to different iterations running concurrently on television, with Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds all co-existing despite focusing on different timelines.

Having said that, the movie universe has never run two different iterations at the same time, so it really is uncharted territory. The reboot trilogy, which began in 2009, produced three very successful and entertaining movies. There really isn't much need to re-visit it for a fourth time, and it would make much more sense to let the sequel die quietly rather than continue to go through production hell.

Bridget jones: mad about the boy - release date, cast, story & everything we know.

The beloved romantic comedy series returns with the upcoming Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and there are already exciting updates.

Bridget jones: mad about the boy is confirmed, bridget jones: mad about the boy release date, bridget jones: mad about the boy cast, bridget jones: mad about the boy story.

  • Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy - Further News & Info
  • The fourth Bridget Jones movie, "Mad About the Boy," is confirmed with details and the original cast returning.
  • Set for a Valentine's Day 2025 release, the movie will be available in theaters and on Peacock.
  • Based on Helen Fielding's 2013 book, the story follows Bridget as a widow navigating the dating world.

Nearly a decade after the latest sequel to Bridget Jones's Diary hit theaters, the beloved romantic comedy series continues with Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy . Based on the eponymous Helen Fielding novel and released in 2001, Bridget Jones's Diary concerns 30-something Bridget (Renée Zellweger) who decides to take control of her life and journals the entire experience. Itself a send-up to Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice , Bridget Jones's Diary quickly became a classic of the cinematic romance genre, and it didn't take long for the blockbuster to receive a sequel.

2004's Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason again drew inspiration from Helen Fielding's book and continued Bridget's journey. It would take over a decade for 2016's Bridget Jones's Baby to arrive, but the threequel not only brought fans back in droves but also earned high marks from critics compared to its immediate predecessor. Besides being some of Renée Zellweger's best movies , the trilogy has been a financial juggernaut. This made a fourth Bridget Jones movie seem inevitable, though fans had to wait until April 2024 for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy to be formally announced.

Bridget Jones' Diary: 10 Funniest Quotes

A fourth bridget jones movie is on the way.

Unlike other Hollywood projects which are announced with very little detail, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy was revealed with its cast, release date, and various other vital information already known . In April 2024, the fourth Bridget Jones film was revealed with Renée Zellweger confirmed to return in the role that earned her an Oscar nomination. Perhaps most interesting, Hugh Grant is slated to reprise his role as Daniel Cleaver for the first time in more than 20 years since he last appeared in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (via Variety )

Original star Emma Thompson will also return for the fourth movie, and Michael Morris ( To Leslie ) has been tapped to direct. The movie will adapt the Helen Fielding 2013 novel Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy , which is actually the third book in the vaunted literary series.

Bridget Jones Returns For Valentine's Day 2025

The romantic holiday is the perfect occasion for the Bridget Jones fourquel.

Just as the film was formally announced, it was revealed that Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy already has a release date set. The film is scheduled to arrive on Valentine's Day 2025 , and will be a dual release between theaters and Peacock. It's unclear if the release date will hold for nearly a year, but the romantic holiday is the perfect occasion for the Bridget Jones fourquel.

Stream all three Bridget Jones movies on Max.

Renée Zellweger Returns Alongside New & Old Faces

All of the Bridget Jones movies have something in common , and that mutual denominator is lead actor Renée Zellweger who rocketed to fame in the eponymous role. Fortunately, Zellweger will be back to play the quirky and lovable Bridget Jones once again , and she won't be the only legacy character in the ensemble. Hugh Grant will return to play Daniel Cleaver after a two-decade absence. Also, Emma Thompson will reprise her role as Bridget's doctor, Dr. Rawlings. Two new names have joined the ensemble, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall cast in undisclosed roles.

The known cast of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy includes:

The Film Is Based On Helen Fielding's 2013 Book

The eponymous novel catches up with newly widowed Bridget as she tries to establish herself in the dating scene of the 21st century as a woman over 50

Though the Bridget Jones film series skipped over Fielding's 2013 book Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy to make Bridget Jones's Baby in 2016, it didn't do too much to deviate from the book timeline. The eponymous novel catches up with newly widowed Bridget as she tries to establish herself in the dating scene of the 21st century as a woman over 50. When Bridget finds her way onto social media, she begins a flirtatious relationship with a much younger man named Roxter , and more of her typical quirky antics ensue.

It's unclear exactly how much liberty the new film will take with the book's story , but the basic framework is flexible enough to accommodate changes without losing the charm of Fielding's writing. The character of Roxter is a new wrinkle in the equation, and the inclusion of Hugh Grant's Daniel Cleaver is also a wild card that fans will be eager to learn more about . Regardless of how closely Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy follows its namesake, it will be a welcome return.

Star Trek: Discovery Ends an Era With Season 5

The showrunners and stars on how they’re taking the disco to the final frontier one last time..

Tara Bennett Avatar

Seven years ago, Star Trek: Discovery debuted as the seventh Star Trek series in the illustrious and long-running science fiction franchise. Discovery, or Disco as it is affectionately known, was also the first Trek anything to debut on a streaming service. Its success made episodic Star Trek viable again after a 12-year dry spell, and now fans have a robust lineup of all kinds of Trek series on Paramount+ as a result.

But all starship missions eventually come to an end. So with Season 5 of Discovery, Captain Michael Burnham and her USS Discovery crew embark on their final adventure. We spoke to some of the creative team about what’s coming for Burnham, Book, Saru and more.

From Season Finale to Series Finale

After the turmoil and complex resolution of the Dark Matter Anomaly story arc in Season 4, the fifth season opens with many Discovery characters contemplating both personal and professional change.

While showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise told IGN that they didn’t go into writing the season knowing it would be the show’s last, their instincts to create transition points for much of their ensemble ended up lending itself to a consequential final season.

“Alex and I talked about it,” says Paradise. “And this season we explore such big themes and such big ideas. And in some ways, it felt like if [the end] were going to happen, this was the right season for that to happen because it feels almost like an ending.”

While the showrunners didn’t find out that this was the last season of the show until they had already finished shooting the body of the season itself, the studio wanted to give Captain Burnham and the Disco crew a proper send-off. And so they let Paradise, Kurtzman, and the team fine-tune the Season 5 finale so that it could also serve as a series finale.

“The studio and the network were kind enough to allow us to go back and shoot some additional material so that we could wrap up the series itself,” continues Paradise. “So I feel like if people didn't know that, they would come in thinking that we had planned from the beginning to make [it] the final season. And it's exciting that the way it ends feels satisfying and fulfilling in that way.”

For Sonequa Martin-Green, who stars as Captain Burnham, wrapping up the show was the culmination of an experience for the actress that she’ll always feel lucky to have had.

“My goodness, the journey of growth, the journey of evolution – you can parallel Burnham's life with my own, this time that I had as Michael Burnham and then as Captain Michael Burnham,” says Martin-Green. “My goodness, I'll never be the same again. And I am just grateful because I feel that God blessed me with an opportunity to act out some of the things that he was teaching me.”

The Captain Conundrum

A starship operates only as well as its captain, which bodes well for both Discovery and Captain Michael Burnham, who is arguably hitting her professional stride at this point in aiding Earth’s re-entry into the Federation. Personally, it’s a little more complicated as she’s still wrestling with the open-ended separation from her partner, Cleveland "Book" Booker (David Ajala), after he chose to leave and help those impacted by the Dark Matter Anomaly last season.

“Stepping into Season 5, that relationship is fractured, and will it heal?” ponders Ajala. “Knowing these two individuals, I think they will put their best foot forward to try and make it happen. But there's still creases in the relationship. However, the two of them believe in each other. And so far as there's life in Book's body, he will always support all of Michael Burnham's endeavors. And likewise, she would do the same for him. So having said that, these two were just meant to be kindred spirits.”

Surprisingly, matters of the heart are also top of mind for Discovery Captain… err, First Officer Saru. But first, Doug Jones, who plays the Kelpien character, told us that rank issue is also complicated.

“I had reached captain status in Season 3, and I was captain of starship Discovery,” explains the actor. “And then in Season 4, with our special mission that we were on with the 10-C and exploring all that… I felt that I was needed and that Michael Burnham, with our brother/sister supportive relationship, that I would not be a captain, but be her Number One. Is it logical to keep two captains on the bridge of a ship? Can it go on forever? Should it go on forever? So Season 5 is an exploration of what else can Saru do.”

And what would any new position mean for the deepening relationship between Saru and the Vulcan President of Ni'Var, T’Rina? First introduced in Season 3, T’Rina has become an increasingly important part of Saru’s life.

“I have been courting the lovely President T'Rina this whole time, played by Tara Rosling, whom I adore,” says Jones. “And so, yes, that's evolving at the same time as the career. Can they evolve together? Can we find a blend in the two? That's our struggle, and that's our little issue to get through. It's kind of like a Hallmark movie.”

The Disco’s Crew Highs… and Cast Lows

One of the strengths of Disco has been its varied crew of characters with their own stories and arcs that have kept audiences invested in the show. One of the best relationships that has unfolded across all five seasons has been the partnership between Paul Stamets and Hugh Culber, played by Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz.

In this last season, Cruz said their unique relationship continues to grow, but Culber will get his own solo adventure that will surprise long-time viewers.

“I'm excited for people to see a different, new side of Culber,” says the actor. “I can say that. He has definitely experienced a lot of insane things in the five seasons and Season 5 is definitely up there with it. So I'm excited for [fans] to see him in a new light.”

With Lt. Silvia Tilly, actress Mary Wiseman remains a little giddy about her character’s love for her Captain, Oh Captain Burnham, and an upcoming memorable away mission together.

“I'm excited for people to see Tilly go on a very special adventure with her best friend, Michael Burnham,” says Wiseman, while Blu del Barrio promises that, much like Culber, their character Ensign Adira Tal will get to experience a shift that will challenge how everyone sees them going forward.

“Adira [goes] on a mission that they would probably, maybe from the past seeing Adira since they joined the ship, would probably imagine anybody else on the ship being in that position before they were in that position,” says del Barrio.

Of course, series ending also mean some of the cast’s wish-list episodes or arcs will remain unexplored. While much has been covered by the cast over the past seven years, there are a few clear, if good-natured grievances to be aired about what might have been if Discovery continued to cross the galaxies.

“How is it that we did not get the musical episode!?” laughs Cruz, clearly referring to the Strange New Worlds musical episode from last year. “I'm pissed off, O.K.!”

“I did not ever get to have a mirror Universe Adira and I'm so sad about that,” adds del Barrio. “It breaks my heart!”

But as any true Trekker knows, never say never with any crew in the Star Trek universe…

Star Trek: Discovery's Five-Season Mission

In the lead up to Discovery's final adventure, the cast and creatives behind the hit series reflects on their journey so far.

Graphic illustration featuring an episodic still from the Discovery crew celebrating in 'Coming Home'

StarTrek.com

We're mere days away from Star Trek: Discovery launching its final adventure with the premiere of its fifth season on April 4.

In need of a catch up of where we last left off with each character? We've got a guide for that . Want a spoiler-free tease of what's to come for the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery ? We've got you covered there as well .

Ahead of their last mission, the cast and creatives behind the hit series that relaunched the Star Trek universe seven years ago has been reflecting on their experiences on- and off-screen during their latest stints on Star Trek: The Cruise VII, SXSW, WonderCon, World Premiere junket, and more. Here are the biggest takeaways from their promotional tour!

'Under the Twin Moons'

"Under the Twin Moons"

Following the finale of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005, it would take the franchise 12 years to return to television screens with the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017.

Speaking directly to StarTrek.com during the press junket at SXSW, executive producer and showrunner Alex Kurtzman detailed how they selected Sonequa Martin-Green to usher in the modern era of Star Trek . "Sonequa's amazingness just radiated off the screen, and that was just from an audition," shared Kurtzman. "We actually didn't meet her in person; she was in New York at the time. It's that beautiful thing. We had been looking for so long for the right Michael Burnham. And it's that miracle moment that you always wait for when you're in a casting process where just the right person shows up and starts saying the lines, and you go, 'That's my Michael Burnham.' That's what we got with her just out of the gate."

"On top of being a brilliant Michael Burnham, she's also just the most amazing Number One ever," continued Kurtzman. "She's such a beautiful human being, such a wonderful leader. She created a space on set for everybody to be joyful and to do their best work. I honestly don't think we can say enough about how amazing she is."

This sentiment was echoed amongst all the cast members, including the newest addition to the series, Eve Harlow , who praised Martin-Green during an exclusive conversation with StarTrek.com during Star Trek: The Cruise VII, "She is that captain, and she treats everyone like an equal. I've just never been on a set where everyone, the crew is so appreciated. She knows everybody's names. She knows what they do. She knows their family life, what's going on with them. She genuinely cares, and being around that, that spirit is infectious."

Michael Burnham takes the helm as the captain of the U.S.S. Discovery in 'The Hope That Is You, Part 2'

"The Hope That Is You, Part 2"

Sitting in the SXSW Studio , Sonequa Martin-Green reflected on being the first Black woman to helm a Star Trek series. "This is one of the things that I'm most proud of," exclaimed Martin-Green. "There's no way that i could not be. We made television history twice. First, it was the first Black female lead, and then it was the first Black female lead and captain. Those moments mean so much to me even being able to just sit in the chair. I could distill it to that moment of being able to sit in the chair. I was carrying my daughter at the same time. So being able to share that with her, and then being able to become a producer and then an executive producer behind-the-scenes."

During the Discovery panel at WonderCon, executive producer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi reflected on Michael Burnham's journey throughout Star Trek: Discovery. " [Sonequa] is an incredible human being, and she's an incredible actor. Here she was playing these multiple roles, lieutenant to prisoner at one point. It takes an actor of incredible range and incredible capability to be able to pull that off. To be believable in each of the different roles of each of the different phases of her life. It was really fantastic to be able to see and have a front row seat to that. It's one of those things I'll cherish for the rest of my life."

During the WonderCon panel, executive producer and showrunner Michelle Paradise added, "She surprises me every episode. She just really incredible. I remember when I first started on the show, one of the first things Alex said to me is that there's nothing Sonequa can't do, and he's absolutely right. I saw that very early on. And as a writer, that is just a gift because you can take the character anywhere. She's a formidable presence and performer, and just so emotional, and the tiniest moments, she just brings them to life. It's a real treat honestly to get to work with her."

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery arrive on the planet's surface to appeal to the Species 10-C in 'Coming Home'

"Coming Home"

In the SXSW Studio, Doug Jones shared how Saru helped fans as well as himself. "Science fiction does parallel real life a lot," noted Jones. "That's why i think the fandom for this genre is so strong because people do see that they can watch something fictional and then go into their real life and go, 'I've got the power to face my demons or whatever is coming in my way that day.'"

"With my character on this [series], I found that the fans seem to be responding to Saru's imposter syndrome, his fears, his anxieties that he starts with in this series," explained Jones. "Watching him work through it, watching him evolve past it, watching him find confidence and courage in himself. That's a theme that so many people have related to and told me, 'Oh my gosh, watching Saru has helped me through this, this, that.' And me too. Me watching Saru go through this has been 'Oh gosh, i don't have to have imposter syndrome anymore. I actually do belong here dagnabbit."

Blu del Barrio also reflected on how their character Adira and Ian Alexander's character Gray has resonated with fans as well as themselves. "It was really perfect timing because the way that Ian and I were introduced," stated del Barrio. "Right after this massive time jump was really perfect, and the way that we were introduced was very nonchalantly, which I think was the right way to do it. There's very rarely a trans character on a TV show. There's never two, and they're never in a relationship. So the fact that I got to do that with Ian is definitely what I'm most proud of in all of the way that I've done here. I feel immensely grateful to have been allowed to. [To Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise,] you guys gave us this platform."

"I didn't realize the effect that it would have, and I'm hugely grateful for it every single day" added del Barrio. "I love the way that we were portrayed. I love the way that I got to bring a lot of my own life and transition into Adira, and that I got to do that on-screen. Although it was very scary, I'm grateful for it. I'm glad that I could do it, and I'm glad that it was not the most interesting thing about either myself or Ian's character. In fact, we literally never talk about it which is perfect. I love that."

Wilson Cruz echoed the same sentiment earlier in the conversation, "I'm feeling grateful for the experience, for people to have been introduced to all of these people who have become a part of my life. I'm grateful for being able to tell this story with this incredibly diverse cast, and finally give voice and face to communities that had been longing to see themselves in this franchise for so many years."
