The Best Tours to Take in Barcelona in 2024 and Why

Sean Finelli Last Updated: October 29, 2023

Barcelona is really big. It’s the second-most-populous city in Spain. This makes it nearly impossible to see all the sights without a plan in advance. Luckily, we have several tours to make your Barcelona vacation one that you won’t soon forget! Here are the best Barcelona tours to take.

Pro Tip: Planning ahead will help your trip run smoothly, so consider bookmarking this page in your browser. Also, check out our guide to Barcelona —it has helpful information about restaurants, hotels, and activities.

Should You Take a Tour of Barcelona?

Barcelona is a great city to visit, which shows in the number of visitors here each year. This is due to the density of cultural attractions, great food, beautiful landscapes, and really fun people. That said, what should you do when in the city?

Well-organized small group tours are a great way to introduce yourself to a city and learn things that you wouldn’t learn on your own. Tours take a lot of the guesswork out of visiting attractions and you get great knowledge from a local.

Meeting locals comes with many other perks such as picking their brain about other great places to visit, restaurants, and where to go out at night. A tapas bar that locals love is going to be so much better than a tourist trap. These are just a few reasons why taking a tour in Barcelona is totally worth it. Here are some of our best Barcelona tours and some reviews from real customers!

The 7 Best Barcelona Tours To Take

Food, culture, and architecture are at the top of the list of types of tours to take in Barcelona. But since this beloved Spanish city is also on the Mediterranean Sea, we couldn’t ignore the many opportunities to enjoy sailing around the city. From tapas to Sagrada Família and Park Güell, there are plenty of options to fill your itinerary for Barcelona below.

  • Unbeatable Barcelona in a Day Tour
  • Skip the Line Sagrada Família Tour
  • Barcelona Food and Wine Tour with a Local Sommelier
  • Montserrat Monastery Tours from Barcelona
  • Barcelona in Half a Day on Electric Bike
  • Barcelona Scenic Cruises by Sailboat

1. Unbeatable Barcelona in a Day Tour

barcelona spain excursions

Have a limited amount of time in Barcelona? No problem. This tour combines our Park Güell and Sagrada Família tours to make sure you get a jam-packed, best-of-the-best excursion of the most popular sites.

In just a few hours, you’ll see celebrated architect Antoni Gaudí’s greatest works, including skip-the-line tickets to Casa Battló and Sagrada Família. This day tour is the perfect option to check every Barcelona must-see attraction off your itinerary list.

2. Skip the Line Sagrada Familia Tour

barcelona spain excursions

The Sagrada Família is not only one of the most celebrated buildings in Barcelona but in the entire world. With its highly decorative towers, this church is one of the most visited buildings due to its unique design. You can look at the architecture and have no idea the stories behind it, or you can go with a super knowledgeable guide who brings it to life.

Due to its popularity, the tower is typically plagued by long lines and even longer waits. What’s worse is that tickets often sell out quickly, meaning you might waste time in a line for nothing. The solution is to book ahead with a tour group to ensure guaranteed access and a memorable visit. Best of all, with us you’ll skip the line and save your vacation time!

3. Barcelona Food and Wine Tour with a Local Sommelier

barcelona spain excursions

Eat your way through Barcelona with this fun and popular food tour. Centered around the vibrant neighborhoods of Poble Sec and Sant Antoni, this tour includes a variety of local, authentic cuisine, including Barcelona’s best tapas and a traditional Spanish dinner at a Barcelona bodega. These aren’t your typical bodegas; these are beautiful restaurants brimming with vibrancy, culture, and local food.

Before you think this tour is all about the food, trust us that you’ll wash it all down with traditional Spanish vermouth and cava (sparkling wine). With your local sommelier guide, explore some wine pairings. By the end of this tour, you’ll have tasted your way through Spanish history, and learned quite a few things along the way. It’s, hands down, the most in-depth food tour in Barcelona and not one to miss.

4. Montserrat Day Trips from Barcelona to the Monastery

view of montserrat monastery

If you’re visiting Barcelona and want to get out of the city for a little bit, this is the tour for you. Away from the traffic and bustle of the city, atop the Montserrat mountain, sits an 11th-century monastery dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat.

This trip includes air-conditioned transportation from the city, tickets for the cogwheel train to the monastery, and breathtaking views of Barcelona and the sea. Along with the beautiful vistas, check out a local market filled with fresh goods. Maybe even take time for a short hike. On the longer tour, you’ll have time to ride the second funicular beyond the monastery too!

5. Barcelona in Half a Day on an Electric Bike

a couple enjoy a cycling tour. One of our best tours in Barcelona

Walking tours are fun, but e-bike tours are another kind of fun. If you enjoy seeing even more of a city than you can explore on foot, then a Barcelona e-bike tour is one to consider. You won’t even have to work super hard since e-bikes come with pedal assisted technology to help you cycle easily through the city—hills or no hills.

This tour takes you past the famous Sagrada Família, and through the Gothic Quarter before seeing Olympic Village and Port Vell for incredible views of the Mediterranean. In just half a day, you’ll explore more of Barcelona’s top areas so you can really get to know this beautiful city.

6. Barcelona Scenic Cruises by Sailboat

Group enjoy a cruise, on one of the best tours of Barcelona

Part of the attraction to Barcelona is the warm weather and coastal views which is why cruises are so popular there! While we love historical tours and activities, its nice to take a breather on a sailboat with a cold beverage in hand.

We have partnered with locals who run small group and great cruise experiences along the coast of Barcelona. Many activities include drinks, stops for swimming when the weather is appropriate, and snacks. Check out all our watersport activities in Barcelona!

7. Montserrat Monastery and Horse Riding Tour

a group horseback riding in Montserrat, one of the best tours in Barcelona

A pilgrimage to the Montserrat Monastery should be on any traveler’s list of things to do in Barcelona. How about mixing it with an unforgettable horseriding experience through the unimaginably beautiful grassy valleys, with the high peaks of the Montserrat mountain range in the backdrop?

With this experience, you will do both. You’ll start with an early morning scenic transfer from Barcelona into the Montserrat mountain range, where you’ll be ready to conquer the first big highlight of the day–a horseback riding excursion through the valleys.

Then, continue to the Montserrat Monastery for a guided tour. You’ll visit the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat before exploring the town and returning to Barcelona—a perfect day trip.

  • Return transport from Barcelona
  • Guided horseback ride
  • Visit the Montserrat Abbey
  • Free time to explore after a visit to the Monastery
  • Expert, English-speaking guide
  • Intriguing destination information
  • Monastery entrance ticket

BARCELONA SHORE EXCURSIONS REVIEWS

Guide with guests in one of our Barcelona tours after cruise

“We were in port for only a day in Barcelona. We’d had one official cruise excursion already and it was pretty mediocre. This was light years better. We were assigned Miriam and she was fantastic – just perfect relaxed, knowledgeable, good humored, a bit wicked (we ended up buying lots of chocolate!) and our driver was absolutely lovely too.”

Tips for cruise passengers visiting barcelona.

Either you are in a short stopover in Barcelona, longer overnight cruise stay, or you are embarking or disembarking from your cruise, if it’s your first time in the city or if you have already been here before, we can help you taking the most out of your time in Barcelona.

But before starting to plan your Barcelona shore excursions, here are a few points you need to consider so you can to organize your stopover in Barcelona efficiently:

Unlike Rome, for instance, the cruise piers in Barcelona are right in the city. However, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to walk from your ship to the city sites. Although in some cases, you might. There are two main areas:

MOLL ADOSSAT This is where most cruise ships anchor, specially the large ones such as Costa, Celebrity, MSC, Viking, Norwegian, Royal Caribean and Tui Mein Schiff. To get to this pier you must cross the Porta Europa rising bridge, and while it hardly ever rises anymore (thus making you waste some precious time unexpectedly), walking accross it and then along some port streets all the way to “the real city” takes… 30 minutes under the sun, as there is no shade.

There will be taxis waiting outside of the ship, but lines can be long and we don’t want all this time to be wasted from your tour. This is why we don’t offer pier pick-up if you are booking a walking tour. Instead, chauffeured tours work great because the ride across the bridge is quickly done if you have a private driver.

MOLL DE BARCELONA (Also known as World Trade Center pier) This is where the smaller ships dock: Silver, Azamara, Seabourn, MS Berlin, Grand Circle and most Windstar. This pier is a 5 minute walk from the beginning of La Rambla, and therefore it can work to explore the city on your own although you are likely to have to take cabs to get to most places. We could meet you there to start your tour if you are booking a walking tour, but it’s still more time-efficient if you meet your guide directly in town.

Please note that while small ships usually dock here, they might be sent to Moll Adossat occasionally on days when there is a lot of sea traffic.

Do we need to know the exact pier when you make your booking? There are 4 terminals in the Moll Adossat pier (A, B, C and D) with a fifth currently under construction that is however used in days of intense traffic, and 3 terminals in Moll de Barcelona (North, South and Z), but you are not likely to know the exact pier when you book your tours. Actually, you might not be informed until the day before – but that’s not a problem.

As long as we know the  cruise name and cruise line , our guides and drivers have means to find the right pier. But we do need to know the exact name of the ship, as there might be two cruises from the same cruise line in town that day, and they’d be in different piers. WE RECOMMEND CHAUFFEURED TOURS because:

  • Pier pick-up and drop off is included (if you book a walking tour we’ll give you a meeting point directly in town and you’ll have to get there by your own means).
  • We can also pick you up at the airport or drop you off there, if you need it.
  • Chauffeured tours are kid and handicapped friendly.
  • They are more time-efficient as they allow you to cover more areas in less time.
  • Our vans are roomy and air-conditioned (unlike most city taxis, and they have room up to 6 of you whereas most taxis only take 3 plus the guide.

STARTING TIME

Ending time.

WE CAN HELP YOU SEEING MUCH MORE THAN YOU’D DO ON YOUR OWN!

But we recommend not being overly ambitious : boarding on time should be your priority when booking. Most cruisers do well with 4 to 6 hour tours, but if your cruise is staying overnight, an 8 hour tour is also a good option. This formula will help you calculate how much time do you realistically have to do your sightseeing:

DEPARTURE TIME – DOCKING TIME – BUFFER TIME* = TIME AVAILABLE FOR TOURING

* Buffer time is minimum 1 hour 30min for chauffeured tours or 2 hours 15min for walking tours.

Barcelona is one of the most popular ports of call in Europe, and a lot of cruise lines start or end here (or both!).

ARE YOU ARRIVING (OR DEPARTING) A FEW DAYS EARLIER? If you have the possibility of arriving a day or two early or depart a day or two after the cruise is over… do it! You’ll enjoy the city much more. We can help you out with your sightseeing, too! This are our best itineraries for half day , one day and two days . We can send a driver to pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel, and the next day we can show you around and drop you off at the pier at the end of the tour: with our chauffeured tours you don’t have to worry about carrying your luggage around – it’ll be safely locked in the car trunk and the driver will be in the car at all times.

ONLY HAVE A FEW HOURS BETWEEN LANDING AND YOUR CRUISE DEPARTURE? If you only have a few hours between your flight and your cruise departure or arrival , that’s not a problem either. We can pick you up at the airport, show you around and drop you off at the pier (or the other way around). This is our favorite half day itinerary with airport pick-up or drop-off.

This was by far my favorite tour in Spain. Mariela was fantastic and we really enjoyed our time with her. The monastery and views were amazing. Lunch was great and the wine tour was more than expected. We truly loved our time with Mariela and would book another tour with her when we come back!

We did a Priorat wine tour from Escaladei and it was great! Our host Mariela was wonderful and the wineries we visited were all different, inviting and the wines were delish!

This tour was the highlight of our trip to Barcelona. Our guide was Samuel, who was exceptionally well informed. The lunch was supposed to be a 3 course meal but was actually more like 5 or 6 courses. It was one of the best meals we had during our trip. The Priorat area is a unique and prestigious wine region. I have visited several others and I would put this one at the top of my list. I would highly recommend a visit to the Priorat region and out guide Samuel to anyone with an interest in wine.

Spanish Trails tours and guides are the best! We went out to the Priorat wine region with Craig on 3/3 and could have had a better time. We had comfortable safe transport, delicious wine and lunch included as well as stops for impressive views and stories along the way. The wine cellars we visited were all unique and special in their own ways. Definitely not something you could arrange on your own without prior knowledge and relationships in this region. We will definitely be back to tour again with Spanish trails!

We had an amazing private tour with Jose. Four stop for tapas and wine mixed with a walking tour of the Old Town districts. Jose picked the best selections to give us a great variety. His attention to detail did not go unrecognized. He quickly picked up on our likes and preferences. The entire tour was comfortable and natural with no forced conversation or awkward moments. I highly recommend this tour, especially if you love to walk. We did cover a lot of ground but it was absolutely worth it! You cannot go wrong here!

Martin was a wonderful guide. He was kind, fun, and knowledgeable. The tour of Montserrat, lunch, and winery visit were all fantastic. It was a great day trip.

Cathay Pacific

No messages.

Barcelona is a cradle of art, fashion and fine food. And with the return of our direct flights there in the summer, you now have an even greater excuse to rediscover the charming Catalonian capital.

From grand sailing expeditions to gastronomic journeys, here’s our guide to the finest luxury experiences Barcelona has to offer – curated exclusively for Cathay Diamond members.

Palau de la Musica Catalana

The most outstanding constructions of Antoni Gaudí – icons of Catalan modernism – offer exclusive experiences, such as tours with an aperitif at Casa Vicens or night tours with a concert at Casa Batlló . The city is also home to initiatives aimed at art lovers all year round. The third weekend of September is Barcelona Gallery Weekend , which is aimed at collectors, while auction houses regularly hold one-time sales. Modernism also defines the Palau de la Musica Catalana , a work by legendary architect Lluís Domenech i Montaner and a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997. This is where the city’s best operas are performed, while the auditorium is also home to the Orfeón Català, the city’s choir, founded in 1891.

Even more exotic than all that modernism is the award-winning Mayan Luxury Spa . Located in the Palace Hotel (formerly the Ritz), it’s the only spa with a temazcal in Spain. This pre-Hispanic Mayan sauna works with the heat of volcanic stones and medicinal herbs, offering rituals carried out by an authentic temazcaltzin or shaman. The Natura Bissé treatments, by contrast, are from a local cosmetics brand founded 44 years ago. Try out its products in the spa on the 43rd floor of the Hotel Arts Barcelona , with incredible views of the Mediterranean.

The sea is one of the city’s main attractions, but only a privileged few get to enjoy it from the most modern yachts and sailboats on the market. Companies such as This Is Med rent them with a skipper and chef on board, and complement the sailing with experiences such as wine tastings and winery visits. Winery Pereleda is an hour and a half by car from the city; opened in 2023 after an investment of 46 million euros, it’s located underground with a medieval castle on the surface. Its portfolio of visits allows you to taste the best wines and cavas in the collection. You can also get there with a helicopter from Mach Helicopters , which specialises in gastronomic and wine tourism flights.

Silver kitchen with chefs

Where to eat

Three years after the closure in 2011 of El Bulli, the restaurant with which Ferran Adrià revolutionised Spanish cuisine, its former chefs opened Disfrutar . Today, it’s second on the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and has just won its third Michelin star. Experiences are also served up at Enigma , where Albert Adrià – one of the most influential and innovative figures in world gastronomy – uses technology to bring out the best from local products. Its 25-course menu changes every month.

Barcelona also has gastronomic temples run by long-time masters of Spanish cuisine , such as Martín Berasategui. His Lasarte boasts three Michelin stars for its delicious Basque recipes made with seasonal ingredients. There’s also design-forward Alkimia , an ideal destination to try traditional Catalan cuisine.

The tradition of pastries also shouldn’t be overlooked. Try options like La Pastisseria by Josep María Rodríguez Guerola and Ana Jarquín, or Hoffmann , the winner of the Best Pastry in Barcelona award last year.  le.

Menswear shop

Where to shop

Along the Paseo de Gràcia, you’ll find boutiques from all the top luxury brands. But none has the history of Santa Eulalia , which opened in 1843. In addition to selling prestigious brands, it has its own tailoring and shirt-making atelier for men, earning it a place among The Business of Fashion’s 30 top menswear stores in the world.

Another long-time favourite is Bagués Masriera , which was founded in 1839. It continues to produce a collection of Art Nouveau jewellery, a style closely identified with Barcelona.

Located in Poblenou, Barcelona’s most cutting-edge neighbourhood, Unusual Concept Store offers the best of local design, with shoes by Eight & Argot, furniture by Mobles 114 and Indoors and objects by DOIY and Octaevo. Visitors can also find products by a careful curation of international brands such as shoemaker 4ccccess and hand-made blown glass by Vanessa Mitrani.

Balcony lounge

Where to stay

With a luxurious location on the Paseo de Gràcia, among Gaudí’s best-known buildings, Mandarin Oriental Barcelona combines the modern design of Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola with the gastronomy of revered chef Carme Ruscalleda. The hotel also boasts one of the city’s top spas.

Close by, in the Gothic Quarter, is The Barcelona Edition , with interiors designed by Ian Schrager. Everything in its hundred rooms and suites, decorated with walnut wood and marble, expresses luxury. It also features one of the city’s most lively rooftop venues and an elegant classic cocktail bar.

Monument Hotel is a Modernist palace in the capital of the architectural style. Its spacious rooms overlook the Paseo de Gràcia, while it boasts numerous premium experiences, a restaurant directed by Martín Berasategui and a spa.

Also owned by Marriott, Cotton House Hotel occupies the 19th-century former headquarters of the Cotton Textile Foundation, retaining original features such as its large marble staircase and wooden floors. Its decoration, by Spain’s Lázaro Rosa-Vilán, is inspired by natural cotton and everything it evokes, from softness to delicacy, a hallmark of its exquisite service. It also has an outdoor pool.

Spain Hotels Travel MICHELIN Keys

barcelona spain excursions

In 2024, The MICHELIN Guide is announcing the first ever MICHELIN Keys — a brand new distinction that recognizes the most outstanding hotels across the world. Head here for everything you need to know about the new Key distinction, and visit this page to explore the full list of Key hotels in Spain.

The Three Key distinction is the highest hotel honor in The MICHELIN Guide. Earning One Key (80 properties) or Two Keys (12 properties) is difficult enough, but only five hotels received the Three Key distinction in Spain. These hotels — the most outstanding in Spain — crisscross the country, from the capital of Madrid and to the spectacular Montsant National Park. In any location, our Three Key hotels excel in all five criteria used to judge hotels by our Inspectors. But in this series , we thought it fitting to focus on just one of those criteria — the most photogenic of the five — architecture and interior design. Below, take a look at the interiors and exteriors of each of our Three Key hotels in Spain.
