Batsto Village
In the heart of Southern New Jersey, the secluded Batsto Village is a historic town located in the expansive Wharton State Forest, the largest in the state at over 100,000 acres. Batsto Village is a legendary rustic site with over thirty historic structures. It’s part of the Pine Barrens National Reserve and home to various nature trails and outdoor activities, such as hiking, kayaking, canoeing, and guided walks.
History of Batsto Village
Originally established in the late 1700s primarily as an iron ore works, Batsto Village was a thriving rural town that grew quickly over the next century. In fact, the ironworks here made household items and supplies for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Over the years, several homes and commercial buildings were erected on this site, as well as an impressive mansion that’s still standing today. However, about a hundred years it was built, iron production declined, and Batsto Village shifted its main focus and became known as an industrial center for glass making.
Later, in the 1900s, Batsto Village was sold (and later changed hands again). Enhancements were made to the structures, and agricultural improvements were added to the surrounding forest. Eventually, the State of New Jersey purchased the entire area in the mid-1950s and began preserving the property as a historical site—and the final occupant lived there until 1989.
Today, Batsto Village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a spot that draws visitors over and over, as it’s a great place to enjoy nature and the outdoors—and learn a lot of the area’s history. It is overseen by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Parks and Recreation.
Things to Do at Batsto Village
Batsto Village’s tagline is “Journey into the past,” and that’s exactly what you’ll do at this quaint, rustic destination. Begin your experience at the Visitor’s Center, where you can learn about this unique area's intriguing history and plan on which tours or attractions you can see and do while on the property. A few highlights are:
- Museum: The Batsto Village museum and gallery is an ideal place to get a “lay of the land” and immerse yourself in the history of this destination. With several galleries, this museum is located at the Visitor’s Center. It features many permanent and temporary exhibits relating to the New Jersey Pinelands, how the village was founded, and milestones that occurred over the years. Stop by the small gift shop to check out some gifts and children’s items you can only purchase here.
- Library: Established during the restoration of the village (around 2004), this on-site library is bursting with books about the village and its history, as well as a great deal of information about the surrounding Southern New Jersey area.
- Post office: History buffs love to visit this post office, as it’s one of the four oldest in the United States. Although it’s been closed a few times over the years, it’s still operating today. All stamps are still hand-canceled, so it’s truly a step back in time.
- Structures on site: There are several historic structures on-site, which you can learn about at the Visitor’s Center. These include cottages, a gristmill, a nature center, a sawmill, a farm, and others and offer a glimpse of days gone by.
- Mansion tours: In the center of Batsto Village sits a 32-room mansion featuring Italianate architecture, where the town’s ironmasters resided years ago. It was later renovated by Joseph Wharton, a wealthy Philadelphian who owned the property for several years. Today, you can tour 14 rooms of the mansion with a guide, so be sure to check the Batsto website for details, as tours are only available several days each week.
- Outdoor activities: There are many great opportunities for outdoor experiences here, including hiking, kayaking, canoeing, biking, bird watching, and wildlife spotting. Some visitors love the solitude, but others say the deep, isolated woods in this area is home to the legendary “Jersey Devil.” A few of the more popular trails include the Batsto Lake trail (easy, marked, and accessible). Others are moderate or difficult and include the Mullica River trail and the Batona trail. It’s best to visit Wharton State Park’s website for details before your hike.
How to Visit Batsto Village
You can visit Batsto Village year-round, and since New Jersey experiences the four seasons , you will find that Batsto Village can be different each time you visit. Although there’s more to do in the warmer months, if you don’t mind the cold weather, it can be an especially picturesque destination after a snowfall in winter. Expect to spend a few hours here if you participate in a tour, hike, and explore the historic structures.
While at Batsto, you can explore on your own and stroll along the nature trails, go canoeing, or mountain biking. Stop by the Visitor’s Center to learn about the tours available about the history of this legendary town. Batsto also Village offers a wide array of group activities, including monthly hikes, stargazing excursions, and some events created for children. Self-guided tours are available daily and start at the Visitor’s Center. Guided mansion tours are offered on certain days.
This is a very rural and secluded area of Burlington County, so there aren’t many sites within a short drive. The closest town is Hammonton, about ten miles away. If you have extra time, it’s worth a stop, as there are several casual cafes and shops in the center of town.

Batsto Village is a former bog iron and glassmaking industrial center dating back to the mid-1700s that reflects both agricultural and commercial enterprises that existed there during the late nineteenth century. The Pine Barren village consists of 33 historic buildings and structures, including the Batsto Mansion, a gristmill, sawmill, general store and post office. Nestled in Wharton State Forest, which is the largest single tract of land within the New Jersey State Park System, the historic site is surrounded by rivers, streams and numerous lakes and ponds for canoeing. The park’s abundance of fields are great for wildlife observation and hiking trails, and its miles of unpaved roads for mountain biking and horseback riding.

Not too long ago we drove down the Garden State Parkway and came across exit 50, Historic Batsto Village . I’ve lived in New Jersey some 28 years and had only occasionally paid attention to the brown signs along the Parkway designating certain points of interest. Now, a mom of three, and the creator of Jersey Family Fun, these signs are clues to potential treasures in the Garden State.
Historic Batsto Village @Jersey Family Fun
Spring break, with one son headed back to school and another two still home, we set out on adventure for Historic Batsto Village . My sons had all sorts of questions. They couldn’t believe that we were going somewhere even ‘mommy’ hadn’t been. Somewhere I wasn’t exactly sure how to get to. A few “Are we there yets?” and we were there. The mystery was over but what a treasure we were beginning to explore.
About Historic Batsto Village
Historic Batsto Village is a New Jersey historic site in Wharton State Forest nestled among Atlantic County and Burlington County. Like most New Jersey Parks, there are trails for hiking, cabins for camping, grills for barbecuing. There are about 40 different sites to look at Batsto and three trails to hike with kids or dogs.
Melissa suggests stopping by the Batsto Village Visitor Center first to get a map and information to explore the grounds.
Historic Batsto Village is unique, in that, it’s part of the Pinelands Reserve, the first reserve of its kind in the country to be protected by Congress in 1978. Batsto Village dates back to 1766 when it was a site for making glass and iron. Today, it reflects the agricultural and businesses it was known for in the late 19th century.
What is there to see at Historic Batsto Village?

Yes, the buildings may be old and dusty. There’s no electricity or Wi-Fi, but there’s a beauty about the rusticness. An aweness about it that had my boys slowing down to explore, climbing ladders, and asking questions. And while Batsto Village may reflect days gone by, it has done a great job integrating today’s technology. Using any cell phone, you can call the Batsto information line and find out more about any exhibit by entering the exhibit’s number on your phone.

A picture of the dam or waterfall. It’s so beautiful!
The open fields and paths were a delight. My boys ran till they could run no more. Among the peace, concerns for running into others or even the street were gone. This was the greatness of the outdoors and they were free to explore. They were loving it. From sitting on the mansion steps for a picnic lunch to peering into the river to figure out how fish swim upstairs (you’ll have to go to find out), my family took it all in. I hope your will to.

Batsto Village is a part of Wharton State Forest (which is within the Pine Barrens)... Not only is this village a part of Jersey history but it's also plays a big part in American history... During the Revolutionary War Batsto's Iron Furnace manufactured cannons and other munitions for the Continental Army... No matter how many times you come here you'll always find something to do... Besides the museum and other buildings at this site there are also trails and quite a bit of wildlife....
Absolutely disgusting that you have to use Porta Johns without toilet paper in a state run facility and when you remind people that they need paper you're told they're not in charge of that contractor is disgusting.
Beautiful park and nice walking and hiking trails, take my pit and wife there and we walk for miles
Batsto is a beautiful historic village with an amazing history. The visitor center is filled with useful information, artifacts, and important biographical information that describes the rise/fall of the Batsto industries. The mansion tour is really cool! There are not many historical mansions that have been kept in such pristine shape! The mansion and large property was later purchased by Joseph Wharton (The founder of UPenn Wharton School of Business) and had the forest replenished, as acres of the pinelands were cut down for iron and glass production. There are miles of adventurous trails and a perfect spot to explore all year round! They also do a Christmas theme in the mansion during the winter.
I took the husband to Batsto so we enjoy an easy midwinter hike. This was the perfect spot to do so. We stopped by the visitors center to check out the display in the museum and bought a few items from the souvenir shop. Our hike was on the White Trail. About 4 miles in length it took just over 2 1/2 hours to complete and wandered through the woods on well marked trails. If we visit again we would plan more time to visit the village and explore more of the grounds. A note to hikers, beware of those silent mountain bikers at trail crossings!
I love it here for so many reasons: hiking, picnicking, the historic village, the activities available, the small shop and all of nature/wood/lake views. It's in a great area since local wineries are within minutes. I've been living nearby and just learned about Batsto a month ago! To me, this isn't just a hidden gem but more like a hidden goldmine to people who love to spend time with nature and being active. Did I mention that it's pretty much free?!

My absolute favorite place to go in south jersey! This place is a mixture of nature and history! The historic village offers a multitude of historical context as well as a museum to learn all about the village. It also offers scientific content by explaining the iron and glass industry. A lovely place to learn! Batsto also offers nature trails that are quiet and beautiful. They vary In length so there is a nature trail for all levels. All of the trails are easy and there is no elevation change. If you're looking for a peaceful walk along a lake this is the place to go. It's also a wonderful place to take your dogs! I recommend this place to everyone I know! You can't go wrong if you love history, science, and nature!
What a quiet, tranquil, picturesque place to just roam around and explore history. A former bog iron and window glass making factory (1766-1876), the current 43 structures on the property reflect more of the 19th century commercial and agricultural enterprises of Joseph Wharton including the gristmill, sawmill, underground solo and Italianate style mansion. If you do visit you should take the Mansion tour. It's only $3 for adults and well worth the time. Some of the other structures to browse through include: carriage house, horse stables, piggery, blacksmith and wheelwright shop and post office (1852). From Memorial day to Labor day there is a parking fee but you also have docents at the various structures to answer questions. I was there in April so there was no fee. The Visitor's Center is partially wheelchair accessible, and has many fantastic interpretive displays ranging from the early bog iron days through the Wharton era. You could spend an hour just in the visitor's center. They have restrooms and a museum shop in the same building. It's open 9-4, and the grounds are open dawn till dusk. They give you a printed map which is helpful in getting around and understanding each structure. They have an audio cell card also. The lake is beautiful and you can fish with a license. Hiking and biking trails are often tree lined so you can get out of the summer sun. It's a wonderful day for history lovers and families that enjoy the outdoors and special event weekends include: war reenactments.

We visited this quasi historic location and toured the visitor center that illustrated the history and notable families who lived here. We unfortunately mis timed the mansion tour so we explored the grounds. I only spotted ONE sign near the sight of the charcoal kiln, and it was is such long-term disrepair that HALF of the sign was missing. And as I visited the sawmill, I was dismayed that there wasn't a single marker to illustrate how the mill operated. A beautiful place, but if you're a curios history fan, u can skip it

Not as sophisticated as Williamsburg, but a great relaxing day trip in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Unspoiled by shops and the usual knick knack shops like Peddlers Village. This is just a walk and enjoy day out. Bring your own lunch and sit at one of the picnic tables or stop in a restaurant on your way to or way home. We have been taking the Grandkids since they were 4 and now they are 8. Gives them plenty of running room. Also a very nice place to get pictures of the family in a rustic atmosphere. The hiking trails are short and some can easily be walked in an hour. They also have some annual events. Check the web site. This is must see for anyone interested in South Jersey history. Or anyone who just wants to stroll some trails for a day out. Not recommended for anyone who has mobilization problems since the streets are unpaved and there are not a lot of benches to sit on. Great for people who like the outdoors. http://www.batstovillage.org/

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
