10 Best Beaches in Lanzarote and La Graciosa

Playa papagayo beach lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the smaller islands in the archipelago, but you still get plenty of beautiful beaches to enjoy, from places that are ideal for relaxing and swimming, to beaches that are suitable for water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Actually, some of the best beaches in the Canary Islands are in the province of Las Palmas, meaning the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, plus the smaller set of islands close to Lanzarote.

1. Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen

2. playa chica in puerto del carmen, 3. papagayo beaches (probably the best beaches in lanzarote), 4. las cucharas beach in costa teguise, 5. playa flamingo in playa blanca, 6. playa famara – the best for windsurfing in lanzarote, 7. caleton blanco - amazing white beach in lanzarote, 8. playa del reducto in arrecife, 9. playa de la francesa - la graciosa, 10. playa de las conchas - la graciosa.

So which are the most beautiful and unique beaches in Lanzarote?

The list below is in no particular order, but it includes everything from town beaches with all the facilities, to remote and wild beaches, that are harder to get to but impress with their untouched natural beauty and breathtaking views.

The best beach in Lanzarote is different for everyone and it depends on what you want, but all the places on our list are worth visiting at least once, just so you can experience the phenomenal diversity of the landscape in Lanzarote.

Puerto del carmen lanzarote

This is the largest beach in Puerto del Carmen and it has dark golden sand, calm waters, all the facilities you need, lifeguards on-site and let’s not forget, a magnificent view beyond Playa Quemada and towards Los Ajaches.

There are plenty of restaurants and shops just across the street from Playa Grande, so everything you could ever need is just a few minutes away. Puerto del Carmen is the most popular resort in Lanzarote and since this is its main beach, you have plenty of things to do around it without getting bored.

playa chica best beach in puerto del carmen

Playa Chica is the smallest beach in Puerto del Carmen and some people say it’s the best, just because it has a cozy feeling due to its size and location. Sometimes this beach gets really crowded with families with kids, because the water is really calm all the time and it’s safe for swimming.

Papagayo beach lanzarote

The most beautiful beaches in Lanzarote are located in the south of the island, inside the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches in the municipality of Yaiza. The park is close to Playa Blanca, just 20 minutes away, but you need to have a car to get here and you have to pay a fee of 3 euros per car in order to enter the reservation.

Another option to get here is by boat from Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanca.

Once you enter the Natural Monument you have access to a set of beaches, known as the Papagayo beaches , all with pristine waters of turquoise color, which offer the best swimming experience on the island.

Playa Mujeres is the first beach you will encounter and it is pretty open and windy sometimes, with no place to hide away from the sun, so bring your own umbrella if you want.

Playa mujeres lanzarote

Playa Papagayo is the most famous one and is considered by many to be the best beach in Lanzarote. If you arrive by car you will get a lovely view from above, with the turquoise water and all the white boats that come here during the day.

A visit to Papagayo beach is a must while visiting Lanzarote, so you can enjoy the natural beauty of the place, away from all the resorts. There is a small bar - chiringuito - on top of the beach and you will pass by it if you come from the car park. The prices are a bit steep though, compared to the normal prices on the island, so if you plan to spend the day here, maybe you can bring with you something to drink and eat.

playa de las cucharas costa teguise

Located in the heart of the Costa Teguise resort , Las Cucharas beach is known as an ideal beach for surfers and water sports lovers, due to the constant winds and waves in this part of the island. Since this is a town beach, it has easy access to restaurants, bars and shops.

playa flamingo playa blanca lanzarote

Playa Flamingo is ideal for families with kids since it is protected by breakwaters and it is safe for swimming. From Marina Rubicon, in Playa Blanca, you can also go for a dive to see Europe’s first underwater museum – Atlantico Museum , a fascinating place conceived by the artist Jason deCayres.

See the best things to do in Playa Blanca

Playa de famara lanzarote

Famara beach is located on the west coast of the island and it’s mostly frequented by windsurfers, from experienced to beginners that come here to learn with one of the many windsurfing schools in the area. Famara beach has a very dramatic look, with the giant cliffs behind the beach, offering some of the most amazing views of the sunset in Lanzarote.

Lanzarote caleton blanco

In the very north of Lanzarote, close to the small town of Orzola, you will find Caleton Blanco - a set of small coves and beaches with pure white sand that is amazing to see during a sunny day.

The contrast between the black volcanic rocks and the super white sand gives a unique factor to the place, that otherwise is not really suitable for swimming or sunbathing. However, if you do come to this part of the island, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see sand so white, that when the sun shines bright it almost makes your eyes hurt, from the way in which it reflects the light.

Playa reducto arrecife lanzarote

Arrecife , the capital of Lanzarote, has its own large and beautiful beach, with palm trees and shallow turquoise water, ideal for swimming and chilling in the sun. Arrecife has started attracting more tourists in the last few years and the beach is a great attraction point, with a lovely promenade from where you can enjoy the views and the breeze while walking into town.

The best beaches on La Graciosa

Although not actually on Lanzarote, we can't ignore or overlook the amazing beaches in La Graciosa while talking about the big sister island of Lanzarote. Since the only way to get to La Graciosa is by boat from Lanzarote, we thought it would be useful to include 2 of the incredible places where you can enjoy a day of sunbathing and swimming.

playa francesa lanzarote la graciosa

Playa de la Francesa is situated about 2 miles (3.2 km) from the harbour at Caleta de Sebo, where the ferry from Orzola drops you off. You can walk to the beach, or you could rent a bike, but once you are there it is a small paradise comprised of three beaches, with tranquil and turquoise water, ideal for chilling and swimming.

Naturism is permitted, so it is a popular place for nudists, but it doesn't usually get very crowded. Playa de la Francesa is the most popular beach in La Graciosa and it's definitely worth the one hour walk from the harbour, just so you can enjoy the beautiful water and the nice view towards Lanzarote.

playa de las conchas lanzarote la graciosa

In order to get to this beach you will have to walk a bit longer than for Playa de la Francesa, or you could hire a bike or a jeep, but the price for a jeep is around 100 euros, so many people choose just to do the walk that takes around 90 minutes each way.

Once you are here you have a beautiful view of Montana Clara, which is the next small island part of the Chinijo Archipelago. From the beach, you can easily hike the Montana Bermeja, which sits right behind the beach and from the top you get spectacular views over the surroundings.

If planning a trip to Playa de las Conchas, you should be warned that it is considered dangerous for swimming and you will find signs advising not to enter the water, due to the currents and the big surf. This beach is mostly a destination for people who want to discover the island of La Graciosa, not an ideal place for sunbathing and swimming, since getting into the water is dangerous and not worth the risks even for experienced swimmers.

Since you don't have a place to stay in the shade and you can't cool off by going into the water, most people don't spend a lot of time here. If you're more of a beach bum and want to spend the day getting a tan and swimming, then Playa de la Francesa might be more to your taste.

Although small, Lanzarote is a precious island with many hidden secrets and it’s a great destination for sun and beach lovers. On the west coast, you will find many small beaches with volcanic sand, with few tourists, ideal for those who want a secluded place to spend the day.

15 best beaches on Lanzarote (+ our photos)

by Claire ROBINSON , Region Lovers | March 8, 2024 | no intrusive ads, no sponsored content, just some affiliate links - if you use them, we get a small commission (read more)

We went all around the island and visited a large number of beaches: fine white, golden or black sand, black rocks, turquoise waters…

It was a tough selection, but here’s our list of Lanzarote’s best beaches , with our own photos – and a map at the end of the article. Let’s see where you’ll be spending your next vacation!

lanzarote's best beaches

This opinion is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

1. Papagayo Beach (out of town)

Lanzarote's most beautiful beaches - Papagayo

Why we love it

Among Lanzarote’s most picturesque beaches is the famous Playa de Papagayo. Located in the wild south of the island, it’s a beautiful cove of golden sand and emerald water. Thanks to the steep cliffs that surround it, you’re sheltered from the wind. It’s the oldest part of the island, geologically speaking, and has fascinating colors. According to many websites, this is the best beach on Lanzarote , said to be the most beautiful. We agree that there’s something special about it, probably because of its age and desert landscape. See our article

Papagayo beach

  • Good for sunbathing and floating in the water
  • Not easy to reach – 40-minute walk east of Playa Blanca or by car via a bumpy dirt track (for a fee)
  • 2 bars in Papagayo, no other facilities
  • Very popular in high season from mid-day onwards
  • Easy parking (once you’ve driven the dirt road) – please note that car rental companies do not allow driving on dirt roads.
  • Papagayo is a wild beach. There are no hotels close to the beach.
  • The nearest places to stay are in the town of Playa Blanca.
  • See our selection of the best hotels in Playa Blanca .

2. Playa Flamingo (Playa Blanca)

Playa Flamingo

Our favorite beach is Playa Flamingo , a little west of downtown. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the center, and there are plenty of hotels around. We think it’s the most beautiful in terms of scenery, with its palm tree, the elevated view on one side and the Montana Roja volcano in the marvellous background.

The beach is well equipped with showers and a restaurant. It is rather long with fine sand. Thanks to two dikes, the water is calm. And as everywhere around Lanzarote, the water is crystal-clear and invites you to take a refreshing dip.

Playa Flamingo and Montana Roja

Access and parking

The beach is in the city, west of the city center. It’s surrounded by hotels and restaurants. Free parking is available on nearby streets, but it can be difficult to find a space.

Practical information

  • Golden white sand
  • Supervised beach in season
  • Toilets and shower at the beach exit
  • Restaurants and bars all along the beach
  • The beach faces south-west
  • No grey areas

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Lanzarote

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • A small car is all you need.
  • But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

3. Famara Beach (at sunset)

Lanzarote's most beautiful beaches - Famara

Famara beach is one of the few beaches on the west coast of Lanzarote (as this side is covered by lava or cliffs). Famara is at the foot of the cliff, a large stretch of sand with small dunes. It’s considered a photographer’s paradise, especially at sunset when the cliffs are struck by the sun, changing color and reflecting off the wet sand. We loved spending so many sunsets there! Famara is said to have been one of César Manrique ‘s favorite places. And it’s definitely one of the most beautiful beaches on Lanzarote.

sunset at Famara

  • Not good for swimming
  • Many surfers and windsurfers
  • Lots of photographers at sunset – this is the place to be!
  • Plenty of parking along the sand dunes
  • There’s nothing on the beach, but the village of La Caleta de Famara at the southern end has a few nice tapas restaurants.

Accommodations near Famara:

Famara has a small village and also a “vacation village” with rental possibilities. Discover the best-rated accommodations in Famara . We stayed a few minutes’ drive from Famara in a quiet, secluded guesthouse. We loved it! Discover Finca Las Laderas .

4. Playa Chica (Puerto del Carmen)

Playa Chica - view

Playa Chica is our favorite beach in Puerto del Carmen. It’s a charming little cove, 60 m long. It is surrounded by a rocky barrier, creating a natural pool with calm waters.

It offers magnificent mountain views over southern Lanzarote. And we found the sand very fine and the water quite transparent. She enchanted us. If you like snorkeling, this is also a great choice.

Playa Chica

Access from Puerto del Carmen

West of downtown, towards the port. Accessible from the seafront promenade. It has a small parking lot nearby, which isn’t always full because it’s less obvious than the downtown locations.

  • Beach with accessibility chair
  • Snack restaurants right next to the beach
  • The beach faces south
  • Small beach

Hotel Barcelo Costa Teguise

5. El Golfo (for the scenery)

Lanzarote's most beautiful beaches - El Golfo

It’s definitely not for swimming and sunbathing, but it’s one of the most fascinating places on Lanzarote. The crater of the half-volcano meets the ocean, and inside, a lagoon has formed and turned green thanks to the combination of sulfur and algae. The colors are spectacular, especially at sunset, with black sand, red and yellow rocks and a green lake. They’ve set up a platform for you to admire the scenery.

El Golfo beach

  • Not for swimming
  • Easy parking
  • Restaurant at the foot of the parking lot and in the nearby town
  • Find out more about the green lagoon

Lodging in El Golfo:

The village of El Golfo on the west coast is considered one of the most romantic places on Lanzarote because you can watch the sunset every evening. See accommodation in El Golfo .

6. Playa Mujeres (towards Papagayo)

view of Playa Mujeres

We now head east to the Papagayo wilderness area. The closest to Playa Blanca is Playa Mujeres. It’s the second most famous beach in the region. It’s a 400 m-long stretch of golden sand with turquoise water. A parking lot has been built right next to the beach. Because it’s long and wide, there’s more space for everyone to enjoy the sand and sun.

Playa Mujeres

You can get there by car. The road is unpaved and the parking lot can be sandy. You have to pay a small toll to drive into the area. Alternatively, you can go hiking from Playa Blanca. It’s very pleasant with beautiful views (but no shade). It’s the closest beach to Playa Blanca, so you can get there in 15 minutes from the trailhead near the Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort.

  • Unsupervised beach
  • No installations
  • The beach faces south-west, ideal for sunsets.
  • Long, wide beach, plenty of room!

7. Caletones du Nord (beaches away from the crowds)

Lanzarote secluded beach - Lagoon

On the north shore of Lanzarote, there’s an area of white sand mixed with black lava. It’s absolutely fascinating. There are plenty of places to park and stroll along the waterfront. The color contrasts are great and there’s hardly anyone around. Most of these beaches aren’t really practical for lying down or swimming because of the volcanic rock, but you can stop off at Caleton Blanco where you’ll find a shallow lagoon that’s ideal for cooling off on a hot day.

secluded beach in Lanzarote

  • Small parking lots along the road to Orzola (often on the opposite side to the sea) and a large parking lot by the lagoon.
  • The shallow waters of the lagoon are perfect for a dip.

8. Playa Dorada (Playa Blanca)

Playa Dorada

The best-known and largest beach is Playa Dorada. It’s right in the heart of Playa Blanca, right next to the famous Princesa Yaiza hotel. It’s rather long (300m) but still a little wide. The sand is fine. And once again, the water is magnificently transparent, with variations in turquoise color. There are showers, bars and restaurants. The beach also has plenty of sun loungers and parasols for hire. It’s protected by two dykes, so the waters are fairly calm.

Playa Dorada - clear water

It’s right in the heart of the city, between the port and the Rubicon marina. There are free parking lots and street parking in the surrounding area, but it’s often difficult to find a space with all the hotels around.

  • Toilets and showers at several beach exits
  • Sun loungers for hire
  • A few restaurants and bars along the beach
  • Rather long beach
  • See more pictures of Playa Dorada

9. Playa Grande (Puerto del Carmen)

Playa Grande

Playa Grande is definitely one of Lanzarote’s most popular beaches, and the largest in the town center. We love its kilometer-long shoreline of golden sand and its depth, where everyone can find a little space. What’s more, its orientation is perfect for admiring the mountains of southern Lanzarote, the oldest part of the island.

On the beach you’ll find sun loungers, pedal boat and paddle rentals, showers… and anything else you might need. And along the square is the main avenue with its many restaurants and stores.

Playa Grande - deckchairs

In the heart of the city, parking spaces are available in the surrounding streets, but it’s difficult to find parking. You can easily reach it on foot via the seafront promenade or by bus (several stops).

  • Pedal-boat and paddle rentals…
  • Restaurants in the street above the beach
  • Long beach, but still wide enough
  • Limited parking nearby

best beaches to visit lanzarote

10. Playa de la Cucharas (Costa Teguise)

Playa de la Cucharas

Playa Cucharas is Costa Teguise ‘s main beach. Right in the heart of the small seaside resort, it offers a fairly large expanse of fine sand and a gentle slope to enter the water. Protected by two large dikes, the waters are fairly calm.

This really is the heart of Costa Teguise vacations: you’ll find all the activities and restaurants around. Many water sports are practiced here. If you visit in June, you’ll be able to attend the PWA World Windsurfing Tour.

Playa de la Cucharas - waterfront

Access from Costa Teguise

The beach is right in the center of town. There’s a large parking lot just a few hundred metres from the northern end of the beach. In season and in the middle of the afternoon, it can still be difficult to find parking.

  • Restaurants in the beach town
  • The beach faces south-east, ideal for sunrises (although sunsets can be interesting depending on the time of year).
  • Range in length and width

11. Playa Quemada (picturesque beach)

Secluded beach on Lanzarote - Quemada

Why visit Quemada beach?

Quemada is a small fishing village on the east coast of Lanzarote, south of Puerto del Carmen. The main area is covered with black pebbles, but if you walk on the south side, under the hills, you can find black sand to settle on. The area is ideal for a lunch break with good fish and tapas by the sea.

Good to know:

  • The sand is sheltered from the wind, which is a big bonus in the Canary Islands.
  • No facilities, but there are restaurants in the small village.

12, 13 and 14 – the best beaches of La Graciosa

As we said, Lanzarote doesn’t have much sand, so you won’t find many heavenly beaches. If you’re looking for fine sand and turquoise waters, we recommend taking the ferry from Orzola to La Graciosa and hiring a 4WD cab to one of its magnificent beaches. Book your ferry crossing here

12. Playa Francesa

Lanzarote plage la graciosa - Playa Francesa

This is the island’s most popular beach, as it is accessible on foot from the ferry dock. It’s a beautiful rounded beach with Montana Amarilla in the background. A dream place to spend the day, isn’t it?

  • To reach the beach, you can either walk for less than an hour (partly in the sand) along the water and lagoon, or take one of the 4WD cabs.
  • There are no roads on La Graciosa
  • There are no facilities and nothing at the beach. Take everything you need
  • Bring plenty of water, as there’s absolutely no shade on the beach or on the path.

13. Playa Amarilla

Lanzarote plage la graciosa - Playa Amarilla

This is La Graciosa’s most sheltered beach. It lies at the foot of Montana Amarilla, with its yellow-orange rock face shaped by wind and water. The contrast between the water and the volcano is fascinating.

  • You have to go up to the end of Playa Francesa and then down the other side to reach this beach (15min). Wear appropriate footwear, as walking downhill is a little slippery.
  • No installation at all
  • The 4WD can’t take you there. Stops at Playa Francesa

14. Playa de las Conchas

Lanzarote plage la graciosa - Playa las conchas

If you’re looking for an even wilder beach with plenty of space, we recommend La Conchas at the north-western end of La Graciosa. It’s a vast stretch of golden sand facing the Isla de Montana Clara. Photographers will love the sand dunes and intense colors.

  • Hire a 4WD cab to get there
  • For those seeking peaceful surroundings
  • If you don’t take a 4WD cab, it’s going to be a very long walk under the sun!

15. Beaches del Reducto (Arrecife)

Best beaches in Arrecife

We’re not going to Arrecife just to go to the beach. But if you stay there, the central beach is really great, with shallow waters and fine sand.

Famara is definitely the most romantic beach on Lanzarote. Most beaches face east. But this one is on the west coast, ideal for sunsets and at the foot of high cliffs.

Naturist beaches in Lanzarote

Except in the towns, most of Lanzarote’s wild beaches are shared with naturists: Papagayo area, Famara… There’s a 100% nudist resort in Charco del Palo on the northeast coast: Finca del Mar.

There is no danger of animals on Lanzarote’s beaches . Jellyfish are rare. Your main danger is the sun, at any time of year. Lanzarote is often windy, so you don’t always realize how harsh the sun is. Protect yourself and don’t spend all day on the beach. And stay hydrated!

Where are the best beaches: Fuerteventura or Lanzarote?

Are you looking for the best beaches in Lannzarote? From Papagayo to Caleton Blanco, these are the Lanzarote beaches you just have to visit!

best beaches in lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of those places that’s been pulling people in for decades. I knew how popular this place was, particular for British and German tourists, well before booking a holiday here.

However, what I didn’t expect was just how beautiful the island was. Honestly, there are just stunning landscapes wherever you look.

The whole island is only 60 kms from north to south, and 25 kms from east to west. In total there are 213 kms of coastline and you know what that means – beaches.

In this blog post I’m going to show you some of the best beaches in Lanzarote. These are the ones you should really highlight on the map.

lanzarote beaches

The majority of tourists either stay in Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise.

Now, all of these places have beautiful beaches that I’ll feature here, but if you want those extra special ones, or those secluded spots with no one else around, then you’ll have to travel further afield (you can check out my guide to driving in Lanzarote to help plan your trip here).

One of the things that makes Lanzarote such a unique place to visit are the black sand beaches. This is one of the only places in the world where you can access black sand beaches so easily, so take advantage of that.

Right, let’s get into it. These are the most beautiful beaches Lanzarote has to offer. I really hope this helps when planning your trip here!

Beaches in Lanzarote, Spain

Playa de papagayo.

papagayo beach

Welcome to paradise. Okay, so getting to Papagayo beach in the south of Lanzarote is a nightmare. The ‘road’ is a bumpy dirt track with potholes the size of volcano craters. You can only do 20 kph max, and you get thrown around like you’re sitting on a bucking bronco. However, it is 100% worth it.

Papagayo is famous for being one of Lanzarote’s best beaches, and this place is absolutely gorgeous. It has an arching bay with golden sand, and the backdrop is a volcano dominating the landscape. Also, the waters are crystal clear here making this an amazing spot for snorkelling.

There’s are a couple of small chiringuito (a small bar/restaurant) overlooking the cove. This is a great spot to grab something to eat or a cocktail at the end of the day. Of the two, I’d recommend Casa el Barba restaurant which is the one closest to sea.

Even though it’s an effort getting here, I promise you it’s worth it! So much so I’ve written a whole guide to Papagayo beach to help you plan your day here.

Caleta del Congrio

lanzarote best beaches

If you’ve made it to Playa de Papagayo, I’d really recommend exploring the beach next to it – Caleta del Congrio.

Papagayo grabs all the headlines, but in many respects I preferred Caleta del Congrio. This is a much quieter beach, and if you come here late in the afternoon the chances are you’ll have it all to yourself.

The beach has been completely left to nature – there is no development in this area at all. This makes it perfect for nature seekers. The area surrounding the beach very rocky too making it an amazing place to explore on foot.

My advice would be to visit Papagayo first, then walk around the headland to Caleta del Congrio to relax on the beach for a couple of hours.

Playa del Charco de los Clicos – Lago Verde

black sand beach lanzarote

One of the top things to do in Lanzarote is visit Lago Verde, the oh-so Instagrammable bright green lake. What people don’t know is they can actually access the beach here too.

Playa del Charco de los Clicos is one of the best black sand beaches in Lanzarote. And because people don’t really know they can access it, it’s usually empty!

There’s a viewpoint overlooking Lago Verde on the left of the lake (if you were facing it). However, if you hop in your car are drive 5 minutes to the right of the lake, there are a few parking spots at Volcán del Guincho (you can find the parking spot here ).

From here, you walk 5 minutes down a path to get onto Playa del Charco de los Clicos. Just make sure you bring lots of water with you as it can get sizzling on that black volcanic sand!

Playa de Famara

playa de famara

If you’re a surfer, then get yourself over to Playa de Famara on the northwest coast of the island.

This long and dramatic expanse is backed by giant cliffs. You can even make out La Graciosa (one of the other Canary Islands) in the distance over the water.

Because Playa de Famara is more prone to winds than anywhere else on the island, this is where you’ll find the best surfing in Lanzarote. On a busy weekend, there will be well over 100 surfers in the water.

There are loads of surf schools if you’d like to learn how to surf, or you can hire a board for the day in the sleepy surf town of Famara.

Even if you’re not a surfer, this is still one of the best beaches in Lanzarote to visit.

Caletón Blanco

caletón blanco canary islands

I absolutely loved how quiet and secluded Caletón Blanco was. Located at the very north of the island just outside the town of Orzola, Caletón Blanco is an amazing place to visit.

The sand is pure white which is in stark contrast to the black rocks surrounding the beach. If you’ve got kids with you, then they will love playing around in the natural rock pools here. Also, when the tide is out, even the tiniest toddlers can safely splash around in the water.

Playa La Francesa

playa la francesa

If you’re looking for one of the best day trips in Lanzarote, then hop on the ferry and head over to La Graciosa. This is like a mini-Lanzarote with a fraction of the locals and even less tourists.

Playa La Francesa is essentially two long stretches of silky-soft sand, once again backed by volcanic rocks and dunes. As this is a south facing beach, if means very calm and swimmable waters. You can also see the high cliffs where you’ll find Mirador del Rio perched on the top.

To make a day of it, I’d really recommend walking 45-minutes from the beach to Caleta de Sebo , the main settlement on La Graciosa. Here you can grab some food and explore the town before heading back to the ferry.

Playa Grande

playa grande puerto del carmen

One of the best beaches in Puerto del Carmen is Playa Grande. As the name suggests, this is a pretty big beach!

This beach is famous for its dark golden sand, calm waters and all the facilities you need. There are even lifeguards here for the swimmers among you.

There are plenty of restaurants and bars just across the street from Playa Grande, so you’ll have everything you need just a few minutes away.

I know its your holiday in Spain , but if you’re looking to do something active, I’d really recommend going for a run along the coast at Puerto del Carmen. I did this for sunrise every morning and it was such a peaceful way to start the day.

Playa Flamingo

playa flamingo playa blanco

Everyone knows Playa Blanca has some of the best resorts and hotels on the island. Well, with the beach Playa Flamingo, it’s east to see why so many tourists flock to this area.

Playa Flamingo is famous for its golden sand beach, blue parasols, buzzing bars and upmarket restaurants. You can hire sun loungers here, and because it is sheltered by two fabricated breakwaters, the sea is very calm. This means it’s a great spot for families. You’ve got somewhere to base yourself for the day, the kids can play in the calm waters, and then there are all the restaurants to choose from for lunch. Oh, and obviously an ice cream too. You are on holiday after all.

The beach is busiest around noon, so get there before lunch if you want to rent a sunbed and parasol.

Playa Quemada

sunset in lanzarote

If you’re looking for the best sunset in Lanzarote, get yourself to Playa Quemada. This is the beach at El Golfo on the west of the island.

Even though this is a rocky beach, there are a number of beachside restaurants and bars where you can watch the sun set. My advice is get here 45 minutes before sunset, grab yourself a cocktail and watch the magic.

Once the sun has set, I’d recommend heading to Restaurante Bogavante . This is one of the best seafood restaurants on the island – it’s worth visiting El Golfo just for this place!

Playa de la Garita

lanzarote white sand beaches

Now this is a beach not all tourists vist. While we were travelling around Lanzarote, we really wanted to stay in a few different places to get a really good overview of the island. That’s why we stayed in the sleepy town of Arrieta in the northeast of the island – this is very close to Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes .

Arrieta really is a one-street kind of place, and you can count the number of restaurants here on one hand. However, the beach Playa de la Garita really is stunning. This is one of those hotspots that only locals know about.

Fringing the beach are a few bars and restaurants. My advice is head to El Chiringuito, grab yourself one of their boozy by delicious mojitos, and relax on the beach for a few hours. This is what holidays are all about.

Punta Mujeres

lanzarote holidays

A little further north from Arrieta is Punta Mujeres. For me, this was one of those real hidden gems and one of my favourite places in Lanzarote.

Even though there isn’t a beach here, Punta Mujeres has a number of rock pool and outdoor swimming pools where you can take a dip. All of the pools are fringed with white houses and it really is a gorgeous spot. I really can’t recommend this spot enough on your Lanzarote holiday!

Playa del Jablillo, Costa Teguise

playa del jablillo costa teguise

Even though this is Costa Teguise’s smallest cove, it is actually one of the most popular beaches. With breakwaters stilling the waves, families absolutely love it here. Also, because the water is quite shallow, it is a bright blue rarely found elsewhere on the island.

One thing I would say about this beach (as with all beaches in Costa Teguise) – you are surrounded by hotels and resorts here, so it can get very busy during peak holiday times.

Top tips for visiting the beaches of Lanzarote

sandy beach lanzarote

With beautiful black sand beaches, dramatic volcanic landscapes and crystal-clear waters, it’s very easy to see why people fall in love with the island when they visit Lanzarote.

When visiting these beaches though, it’s very important to follow these tips!

  • Don’t litter – I know this is an obviously one, but there’s always someone. If you’re with your kids, make sure you clean up after them, and leave the beach as you found it. Most beaches have bins available, so please use them!
  • Bring lots of sunscreen and water – A lot of the beaches featured here are away from everything with no amenities around. That’s why it’s always a good idea to bring plenty of sunscreen and water for the day.
  • Bring driving shoes – If you’re heading to the beach for the day, the automatic thing to do is slip on your flip-flops. However, it’s actually illegal to drive in Lanzarote in flip-flops, so make sure you’ve got other shoes with you just for driving.

Are you planning on visiting any of these Lanzarote beaches? If you have any questions about them, let me know in the comments below and I’ll get back to you!

15 Best Beaches in Lanzarote

Best Beaches in Lanzarote

In this blog, I’ve picked out 15 of the best beaches in Lanzarote , to give you a head start on the best places to lay your towel on your upcoming holiday.

Made a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1993, it is an island of over 200 beaches , from picturesque coves to kilometres of light golden sand stretching around the coastline.

You can enjoy relaxing days of sunshine and sangria, get active with a plethora of water sports, or explore the island’s towns and villages, coast and interior on one of the many available excursions.

In the evenings, you can dine in local restaurants offering the best of regional cuisine, or international restaurants serving dishes from around the world. Savour the excellent local wines and beers, or chill with your favourite cocktail.

So, break out the shorts, slip on the flip-flops, and let’s tour 15 of the best beaches in Lanzarote.

Table of Contents

1. Playas de Papagayo, not one beach, but a group of golden sandy coves

Playas de Papagayo

Located on the south coast of the island, the beaches of Papagayo lie 10km from the resort of Playa Blanca , in the protected Los Ajaches Natural Park.

The beaches can be reached by hire car from any resort on the island. As you get closer the park and beaches are well signed, taking you down a well-maintained dirt road to the car park. The entrance fee is €3 for the vehicle .

From there, it is a short but steep climb down to the beach area. And for those on a backpacking/camping holiday, there is a small campsite in the park close to the beach.

A more popular way of reaching this picturesque area is by one of the many ferries that make regular journeys to the beaches throughout the day. Or one of the popular catamaran trips that include lunch and drinks.

The beaches are surrounded by high, sandy, shrub-covered volcanic cliffs , with volcanic rock providing natural breakwaters that divide the pretty coves of Papagayo, Mujeres, de la Cera, Caleta del Congrio and Puerto Muelas .

The result provides an area of stunning natural beauty.

At low tide, you can paddle around the breakwaters to visit the other beaches, or use the clifftop paths if the tide is in. On a bright clear day, from the clifftops you can see the island of Fuerteventura shimmering in the distance.

With just one small shop near the park entrance and no sunbeds or shades, be sure to take a cool box with fluids, snacks, sunblock and extra towels.

All the beaches are relatively safe with calm waters, but only a couple have lifeguards on duty if you have small children.

There are no water sports facilities , but many visitors arrive with snorkels and scuba sets to explore the marine life at the base of the cliffs and breakwaters.

Also, a warning for those not particularly enamoured with the au-naturel body beautiful, the beaches of Caleta del Congrio and Mujeres are both popular with visiting naturists .

2. Playa Flamingo, a favourite beach in Lanzarote for families with young children

Playa Flamingo

Although there are two other beaches closer to the town, if you are staying at the Playa Blanca resort , you are just a short walk from one of the best beaches in Lanzarote for fun family holidays.

Playa Flamingo lies just to the west of the resort. Small, at just 200m long , what the beach lacks in size it makes up for in quality.

At each end are large, artificial groynes that ensure the water stays millpond calm. The soft white sand wouldn’t look out of place on a Caribbean island, and the sea is a sparkling shade of blue.

Plenty of sunbeds and parasols are available to hire, and lifeguards are on duty throughout the day. Those with mobility issues will also find excellent access to the beach area .

Along the wide, palm-fringed promenade at the rear of the beach, you will find showers and WCs, souvenir and beach shops and bars and restaurants . If you are self-catering, there is everything you need close by to sustain you for the length of your stay.

Although snorkelling and diving are popular around the breakwater areas, there is little else by way of water sports facilities on Playa Flamingo. For jet skis and the like, head for Central Beach by the harbour, or Playa Dorada, to the east of Playa Blanca.

3. Playa de Famara, cheap lodgings and Lanzarote’s favourite beach for surfer dudes

Paya Famara

Stretching for six kilometres along the northwest coast, we have picked Famara beach as one of the best beaches in Lanzarote due to its popularity with surfers at all levels, its wide-open space, and naturally surreal landscape.

With almost constant winds, it provides ideal, relatively safe conditions for all forms of water surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing , and is the favourite head-to area for most of the surf schools in Lanzarote.

As a sandy, rugged coastal area and backed by the Risco de Famara range of steep cliffs and mountains, Playa de Famara has n o visitor facilities , so be sure to pack a backpack with snacks and drinks.

A couple of kilometres from the top of Famara beach is the one-time small fishing village of Caleta de Famara , the only inhabited place in the area. The village has a few private lets for those looking for lodgings, but no large hotels or apartment complexes.

Even if you’re just day-tripping, La Caleta has a couple of grocery stores, surf shops, bars and restaurants where you can do a little shopping, or enjoy a meal before starting the journey back to your resort.

Playa Famara is also popular with nature lovers, walkers and hikers, who arrive early to explore the coast and countryside.

Young children may well enjoy some time running about in the wide-open spaces, but there is little else to keep them amused. The sea here can be treacherous with waves and currents , so only strong adult swimmers should consider it, even when green flags are showing.

Although remote, the main coast road runs from the capital, Arrecife, along the rear of Playa Famara up to the village, with five public bus journeys a day operating week-days only.

Organised excursions are available, or you can do things in your own time by picking up a hire car.

4. Playa del Jablillo, an excellent beach for family holidays

Playa Jablillo

Lying on the east coast of Lanzarote , Playa del Jablillo is one of three clean golden sand beaches serving the resort district of Costa Teguise.

At 150 metres long, with soft golden sand underfoot, the beach is enhanced by a natural rocky breakwater that keeps the water smooth and calm.

With an on-beach diving school offering lessons to all over eight years old, it gives a great first insight for the kids into what life under the waves is all about.

As the tide retreats at the top end of the beach, the breakwater retains a large seawater pool around 200 metres in length. Here, divers and snorkellers can explore the cliff base and seabed for marine life left behind until the sea returns.

With its calm waters, it’s also a great beach to enjoy some on-water activitie s, such as paddle boarding or kayaking. To further enhance safety, Playa del Jablillo has lifeguards on duty 365 days a year.

With the kids sorted out, plenty of sunbeds and parasols are available for mum and dad to enjoy a little down-time. The promenade at the rear of the beach has showers, WCs and the usual touristy shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

The beach is also disabled-friendly , with boardwalks to take you down to the water’s edge.

If arriving from out of town by hire car, there is a large car park just to the rear of the beach , although it fills up quickly during high season.

For that change of scenery and a break from the hot sun, a short stroll behind the beach will bring you to the main shopping areas , where you can enjoy a little window shopping or a cocktail on the shaded terrace of one of the many cafes and bars you will find around the area.

5. Playa de las Conchas (La Graciosa), a beach day on the Canary’s newest island

Playa de las Conchas

If you fancy a day away from the touristy hot spots of Lanzarote, on a deserted golden sand beach (save for a few of your fellow ferry passengers), book a ticket to La Graciosa.

At just 20km in length, it became an island in its own right in 2018. You can only get to the island by ferry from Lanzarote’s northern port of Orzola , with around six sailings a day. The trip takes 25-30 minutes .

At La Graciosa, you will dock at the port and island capital of Caleta de Sebo . From here, to get across the island to Playa de las Conchas you can walk (around an hour), hire a cycle (around 30 minutes), or hail one of the old Land Rover cabs (10 minutes).

These cabs also offer trips around the whole island , and are an excellent way to get a true feeling of what the island and its amazing landscape is really like.

Excursions take around an hour to 90 minutes, and you can arrange for the driver to drop you at Playa de las Conchas and pick you up for the return journey. Remember, the last ferry leaves the port for Lanzarote at 7pm.

Before continuing your journey, there are no tourist facilities on the island save those in the town. So be sure to fill a bag with drinks, snacks and sunblock, as there is no shade on the beaches.

The golden-yellow sand beach of Las Conchas is 600 metres long and around 150m wide. In the distance, across the sparkling blue Atlantic, you can see the uninhabited islets of Montaña Clara and Alegranza.

To the rear, from the foothills of Montana Bermeja, the landscape is one of sandy soil full of brush and native shrubs, with volcanic cones and Mount Clara in the background.

With no lifeguards on duty, children shouldn’t be allowed to enter the sea unaccompanied. At different times, strong undercurrents can pull the unwary off their feet, which is why you will often find red flags flying.

If you have little ones with you, consider some ball games or taking a kite. The almost constant breeze provides perfect conditions for kite flying and will keep the youngsters occupied.

6. Playa de la Francesa (La Graciosa), an anchor point for boat excursions

Playa Francesa

Still on the island of Graciosa, when discussing the best beaches in Lanzarote, it would be remiss to leave without mentioning pretty Playa de la Francesa.

Nestling on the island’s southern coast , Playa de la Francesa lies just two kilometres, or a 15-minute stroll, from the port of Caleta de Sebo .

Its closeness to the harbour and it’s few shops makes this beach a popular choice to chill in the sun, and it is invariably the busiest of the six main beaches on the island.

With its 400m of golden sand, horseshoe-shaped bay and long, rocky outcrop splitting it in two, the seas are invariably calm .

With an incoming tide, this natural phenomenon also provides a sizeable tranquil lagoon , often used by private boats, visiting catamarans and other boat trips as an anchorage, further adding to visitor numbers.

Being on the south of the island, you can gaze across the blue water for a seagull’s eye view of the cliffs of Famara on Lanzarote’s north coast.

Swimming should be safer on Playa de la Francesa due to its calmer inner lagoon, but care should still be taken with young children. Look out for warning flags and beware of stronger currents.

To round off your relaxing day, whether visiting Playa de las Conchas, Playa de la Francesa, or both on the same day, return to the port a couple of hours before your return ferry trip.

Do a little souvenir shopping, and enjoy an early meal of Canarian potatoes, chicken and mojo sauce. All washed down with a local beer or wine as you reflect on the pleasing tranquillity of the perfect day.

7. Caleton Blanco, a relaxing day of sand, sun and sea for all ages

Best beaches in Lanzarote: Caleton Blanco

Staying on the north coast for number seven on our tour of the 15 best beaches in Lanzarote, we’re heading for Playa Caleton Blanco. In English, White Cove Beach.

Caleton Blanco is actually four coves, separated by lava outcrops that have been battered and shaped over millions of years to provide seawater pools, where little ones can splash around and go shrimping to their hearts’ content.

Close to the small fishing village of Orzola, it is another of Lanzarote’s magnificent coastal gems virtually untouched by the hand of tourist commercialism.

The only way to get to the beach area is by cab or hire car, and there is a large parking area to the rear of the beach.

Another au-naturel jewel, there are no facilities at any of the four coves, so if you’re travelling from further afield, call into the village first to stock up on snacks and drinks.

The sand in these coves is pearly-white. With the contrast of dark, algae-covered rocks, crystal-clear turquoise waters and a blue sky dotted with a little cumulus, the landscape will keep photographers busy for hours.

Caleton Blanco is a favourite with families in the know. The many pools left by the retreating tide are excellent for the kiddies, and even the main sea area beach remains shallow for a reasonable distance out.

Plastic beach shoes are a good idea for the little ones as clambering over some of the rockpools can be sharp on the feet.

If your idea of the best beaches in Lanzarote are quieter, unspoilt, natural beaches , move Caleton Blanco a few notches up the list.

8. Playa de los Pocillos, everything at your fingertips in this purpose-built resort

Playa de los Pocillos

Pre 1990, Playa de los Pocillos was just another pretty beach lying around three kilometres south of the popular resort of Puerto del Carmen , on Lanzarote’s southeast coast.

With tourism increasing across the island, especially along the popular east coast area, it was decided a new resort area was needed, and work began at the back of the beach on the purpose-built resort of the same name.

Being just eight kilometres from Arrecife International Airport and three from Puerto del Carmen, the resort was an instant hit and is very popular with British visitors.

Playa de los Pocillos boasts over a kilometre of golden-yellow sand. And the waters that shelve gently into the warm Atlantic make it ideal for younger family members.

Playa de los Pocillos is a more relaxed beach than its larger neighbour, with plenty of sunbeds and parasols available. However, you won’t find any jet skis, banana boats or para-gliders here.

The odd surfer may be seen riding a sneaky wave at the beach’s north end, but surfing is also officially banned.

A wide, palm-lined promenade running right along the coast has been constructed, stretching from Playa de los Pocillos to Puerto del Carmen .

Shops, bars, cafes, restaurants, hotels, apartment blocks and villas run the entire length, and a pleasant 20-minute stroll in the sunshine will give you an enjoyable change of scenery in the busier Puerto del Carmen.

9. Playa del Charco de los Clicos, a visit to the green lagoon

Playa del Charco de los Clicos

For something a little different, consider a visit to a small coastal village on Lanzarote’s southwest coast by the name of El Golfo and its black sand beach of Playa del Charco.

Here, with a backdrop of volcanic craters, you will find one of nature’s wonders, a large saltwater lagoon that is a deep emerald green .

The lagoon receives its nutrient supply from seawater entering fissures deep down in the base. This supply of nutrients feeds the microscopic algae that proliferate in the lagoon, changing the colour to its deep shade of green.

The lake area is a designated nature reserve , so no paddling or swimming is allowed. You will often find the lake itself roped off, although this shouldn’t stop you from getting some great photos.

If you drive to the top of the hill, there is a designated car park and viewing area , where you can take some great shots looking down on the lake.

If you’re visiting late afternoon, make your way down to the beach, where some excellent sunset photos can be snapped against a background of dark multi-coloured cliffs, black sand beach and emerald lagoon.

10. Playa Grande (Puerto del Carmen), a prime beach at the island’s largest resort

Playa Grande, Puerto del Carmen

As the island’s largest resort, Puerto del Carmen has, for many years, attracted visitors from across Europe and beyond – and with good reason.

While accepting all the facilities needed for a good holiday are just a short walk away, Puerto del Carmen also has three pristine beaches along its coastline , two of which we have included on our list of 15 of the best beaches in Lanzarote.

Wide, and stretching for over one kilometre along the coast, Playa Grande, or ‘Big Beach’, has everything going for it. The cleanliness of the beach is superb. The sand shelves gently into the warm sea, making it ideal for children.

And disabled visitors are well catered for with wood boardwalks and amphibian chairs to get them safely into the water. The beach also has lifeguards on duty throughout the day.

Water sports here are strictly controlled. While swimming and snorkelling are allowed, the only other water activities are pedal-powered boats in various shapes and styles.

An inflatable water park is set up just offshore during the summer, where kids and adults can wade out and pay for 30 minutes of sliding, jumping, and diving off the various floating shapes.

The beach has plenty of sunbeds and shades for visitors, with all the usual shops, bars, restaurants, WCs and showers along the beachfront. More can be found along the Avenue de las Playas, which follows the coast just to the rear of the beach.

11. Playa Chica (Puerto del Carmen) small, friendly, with diving and water sports

Best beaches in Lanzarote: Playa Chica

With just a few hundred metres between them, these two beaches couldn’t be more diverse.

Playa Chica boasts just 60 metres of golden sand , and is surrounded by seawater hewn lava breakwaters, rockpools, and diving areas. Yet it is a top-rated beach with families , couples, divers and snorkellers who return year on year.

While young children can splash about in the rock pools and seafront shallows, divers and snorkellers can get up-close and personal with the large variety of marine life in the caves and around the base of the craggy lava outcrops.

Sun loungers and shades are available at the back of the beach. One beach shack is located on the beach, with shops, bars and restaurants just a few yards to the rear.

Water sports are available on Playa Chica, including jet skis, banana boats, paragliding and boat trips.

Between Playa Grande and Playa Chica, you have an amazing change of outlook just a few hundred metres apart, making both these beaches worthy of our top 15 best beaches in Lanzarote list.

12. Caleta de Congrio, one of Lanzarote’s favourite nudist beaches

Caleta de Congrio

On Lanzarote’s east coast, in the Los Ajaches Nature Reserve , lies the wild, barren and gloriously uncommercialised Caleta de Congrio, so before starting your journey, stock up on snacks and drinks.

For many years the realm of visiting naturists from across Europe, today it is popular with all who enjoy the peace and tranquillity of time away from the masses.

The views are breathtaking both out to sea, where you can make out Fuerteventura in the distance, and in the interior, with its sand dunes and patches of shrub and succulents.

It is one of the Papagayo group of beaches . When entering the park’s car park, you will notice a designated parking area for those touring in motorhomes or campervans.

From here, you are just a short five-minute walk to the cliffs and dunes, where you can follow the path down to over 300 metres of clean, golden-yellow beach.

Nowadays, naturists tend to head off to the right-hand end of the beach, so if you find the naked body a little off-putting, head off to the left.

13. Playa del Risco, a beautiful and isolated beach

Playa del Risco

What makes one of Lanzarote’s most spectacular natural vistas so apparently un-appealing? Answer – access.

Lying on the island’s northwest tip , Playa del Risco lies at the base of the Famara cliffs and stretches for over 1000 metres around the coast.

Although you may be able to take in Playa del Risco as part of an organised round-the-island tour, your time is usually limited to a few photo opportunities from the cliff top.

If you are touring by hire car (there is no public transport to this area), follow directions to the Mirador del Rio viewpoint and park up on the outskirts of the tiny village of Yé .

The area is totally as nature intended, so make sure you have snacks and drinks. Good walking shoes are also recommended.

The walk from here along the well-worn paths will take around 60/75 minutes. Already at an altitude of over 500 metres, it won’t be long before the island of La Graciosa comes into view as you slowly start to work your way down to Playa del Risco.

Once on the yellow sand beach, you can enjoy the feeling of total seclusion. Be amazed by the surrounding landscape. Enjoy your picnic lunch. Swim in the turquoise sea – and try not to think about the trek back.

14. Playa de la Garita, a popular beach in Lanzarote with locals, surfers and older families

Playa de la Garita

Located on the north-eastern coast of the island, Playa de la Garita sits alongside the village of Arrieta. It is a one kilometre long stretch of golden sand beach.

Being more a rural resort than a tourist resort, it is a popular venue with visitors who prefer to engage with the culture of the local population.

On the walkway at the back of the beach are a small popular restaurant, bar and shop, and showers and changing rooms. Other shops, bars and eateries can be found in the village.

Sun loungers and shades are few, with most visitors happy to lay their towels on the beach. For a north coast resort, Playa de la Garita doesn’t suffer the strength of wind others do. Nonetheless, that doesn’t stop a few surfers from riding what waves they can find.

Access to the beach is good , with the local bus service to Arrieta dropping off passengers around 300 metres from the beach.

15. Playa Blanca (Yaiza), a beach family resort

Best beaches in Lanzarote: Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca is Lanzarote’s newest resort around an hour’s transfer time from Lanzarote Airport, and sitting close to Yaiza village. The large, nine-kilometre wide bay is divided into three fabulous beaches, with the beach of the same name being central to the resort.

The area includes a ferry port and a new marina for private yachts and cruisers. The beach is one of soft white sand curving around the coast and is protected by artificial breakwaters and shelves gently into the sea.

With lifeguards on duty every day, the area is ideal for young children.

Sun loungers and shades can be hired on the beach, while the wide promenade stretches along the resort’s coastline, with plenty of tourist shops, bars and restaurants, low-rise hotels, apartment blocks and luxurious villas.

With everything you need at your fingertips, Playa Blanca is another excellent resort that should be enjoyed to the fullest, and is worthy of being on our list of the 15 best beaches in Lanzarote.

12 Top-Rated Beaches on Lanzarote

Written by Michael Law and Lana Law Apr 12, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Authors Michael and Lana Law spent several weeks island hopping through the Canary Islands and enjoying the beaches in the fall of 2022.

Lanzarote is the best place in the Canary Islands for those who eschew the mass-packaged tourism-type holiday but still want a beach vacation. With little effort and an adventurous spirit, you'll be able to easily locate a fantastic beach on Lanzarote.

Playa Papagayo

Beaches range from stunning arcs of sand set beneath towering headlands through to black-sand spots with a perfect surf break on one side to beaches created by the hand of man protected from the ocean and featuring glass-calm water. North, south, east, or west — whichever way you decide to go, a beach is waiting for you.

Not a beach explorer? Don't despair, many of the best beaches have hotels on or near them, making finding the surf and the sun an easy task.

Read on to chart your course to the best beaches in Lanzarote.

1. Playa Dorada

2. playa papagayo, 3. playa las mujeres, 4. playa de la cera, 5. playa blanca (playa grande) in puerto del carmen, 6. playa flamingo, 7. playa chucharas, 8. playa blanca in the town of playa blanca, 9. playa de farmara, 10. playa el golfo, 11. playa caleton blanco, 12. playa de montana bermeja.

Playa Dorada

Lanzarote's volcanic environment doesn't always lend itself to natural beaches, so the enterprising Canarians just went and built several. One of the most popular is the Playa Dorada, located in the town of Playa Blanca.

This is one of the best beaches on Lanzarote for families . Protected from the ocean by two curving breakwaters, the swimming here is in calm and shallow water, perfect for small children. The soft sand is imported and is a pleasant blond color.

The beach has extensive services, so grab one of the comfortable sun beds, set up the umbrella, and settle in for the day. If you get hungry, several beach restaurants offer up typical beach fare, or if you are staying at the beautiful Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada Resort & Spa , wander back and dig into the buffet.

Playa Papagayo

Playa Papagayo has the most beautiful setting when it comes to beaches in Lanzarote, and although it's off the beaten path, it is the one beach that everyone must visit.

Located in the far south of the island and sandwiched between two headlands, this beach photographs 10 out of 10. It's a beautiful arc of sand lapped by azure waters and is backed by dramatic cliffs and a cave.

The location of the beach, facing southwest, ensures it's protected from the predominant winds out of the northeast. Playa Papagayo also is a relatively calm and safe place to swim, with the headlands providing cover from the large surf. The clear water and interesting underwater rock structures attract all manner of marine life; it's worth bringing your snorkeling gear.

Although the beach is popular, it's large enough that you'll still be able to find a pleasant patch of sand to set up your beach gear. A couple of basic restaurants are perched above the beach and have good patios offering wonderful views to the scene below.

Note that Playa Papagayo is reached via a four-kilometer-long dusty and rough road. Although the ride is bumpy, any passenger car can handle it. The beach is located in Los Ajaches Natural Monument and a fee (credit card only) is charged to enter.

Playa Las Mujeres

Located just down the road from Playa Papagayo , many say Playa Las Mujeres is the better beach. Although the setting is not nearly as dramatic, it's still quite stunning, with small barren rocky headlands at each end.

The beach is big, about 500 meters long, and unlike many beaches on Lanzarote, it's deep, meaning that there's lots of space for everyone. Golden soft sand greets you as you walk down from the large parking lots, and a tough decision awaits: where to set up?

The center area of the beach is the most lively, and the farther south and north you go from here, the more private and quiet it gets. If you truly want your own private beach, walk up and over the headland at the eastern end of the beach to a set of two tiny coves.

No matter where you choose, the waters are clear and perfect for swimming, although some people may find the water a bit bracing. If you manage to look up from your book or e-reader, off in the distance on a clear day, you'll be able to see Fuerteventura.

Playa Las Mujeres has no services, so be sure to bring everything you need with you.

Playa las Mujeres is reached via the same dusty, rough road as Playa Papagayo. The beach is located in the Los Ajaches Natural Monument and a fee (credit card only) is charged to enter.

Playa de la Cera

Just over the headland and reached from the same parking lot as Playa Papagayo , Playa de la Cera is a small, picturesque beach. It has much of what Playa Papagayo has but with less people and slightly easier access.

The roughly 100 meters of sand is soft and golden brown, and the entry to the water is fairly level and shallow, making it an ideal place for those who are less than confident in their swimming ability. That said, there are no lifeguards here so bear that in mind.

The beach doesn't have any services on the sand, but two restaurants are located on the headland to the east. The beach is located in the Los Ajaches Natural Monument and a fee (credit card only) is charged to enter.

Playa Blanca in Puerto del Carmen

The tourist town of Puerto del Carmen has one of the finest beaches on the island: Playa Blanca. Also known as Playa Grande, this huge beach has long been a very popular beach destination for sun-starved northerners.

Unlike other built-up beaches on the island and in the Canary Islands in general, the beach is not dominated by huge resorts. Here, the beach is open to all, and back from the beach is a lively strip of restaurants, shops, small hotels, and low-rise beach condos.

Although the name Playa Blanca may lead you to believe the sand is white, it is actually a golden brown color. The beach is exceptionally wide and runs for just over a kilometer. Bring your own beach gear or rent (at a reasonable rate) a sun lounger and umbrella from one of the beach vendors. This is one of the few public beaches with lifeguards .

At the back of the beach are permanent beach volleyball courts , games are generally ongoing throughout the day, and the folks playing will usually invite you to play. Parking is challenging along Avenida de las Playas, but a huge parking lot is located at the mall where the Mercadona grocery store is located.

Playa Flamingo

Playa Flamingo is the place to come if you want ultra-calm water . At this manmade beach, two large breakwaters almost completely close the beach off from the ocean. This ensures that the waves rarely reach the shore. The breakwaters also hold the water in the shallow enclosure and allow the generally quite chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean to heat up a bit.

You can wade into the shallow waters on the soft sand without worrying about waves. It's perfect for children .

Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent, and at the back of the beach are a wide variety of restaurants with shady patios, ideal places to while away a few hours. Flamingo Beach is located at the western end of the resort town of Playa Blanca.

Mere steps from Playa Flamingo are two huge resorts: the Iberostar Selection Lanzarote Park and the TUI BLUE Flamingo Beach . The resorts attract guests from all across Europe and offer rooms ranging from basic right through to very luxurious. Both hotels have a family focus with lots of activities for the kids while mom and dad relax by the pool.

Playa Chucharas

Located in the resort area of Teguise , this delightful beach has everything a person on vacation could need. Calm, clear waters lap against the golden brown sand making it a perfect place to wade, swim, or play with your latest water toys.

If you happen to glance up from the latest bestseller, you'll be greeted with a vast panorama of cobalt-colored water with the odd stand up paddleboarder or windsurfer doing their thing. In behind the beach runs a walkway where you'll find various restaurants and beach shops selling everything you might need.

Near the beach are several large hotels, ensuring that the beach is generally quite busy and a perfect place for some serious people-watching.

Playa Blanca

Not to be confused with the other Playa Blanca in Puerto del Carmen, this Playa Blanca is located in the town of the same name in the far south of the island. The beach is small, but for what it lacks in size, it more than compensates for in the services it offers.

A pleasant walkway runs behind the beach, and along here you'll find restaurants, shops, and ice-cream stands. See if you can find the famous "Spoon in Concrete," it's located in the walkway leading to Playa Dorada. The beach is reached by walking down a pathway from Calle La Tegala, where you'll also find parking.

Playa de Farmara

The largest beach on Lanzarote is the wild and wonderful Playa de Farmara. Stretching for an impressive six kilometers, this wide-open beach faces the full brunt of the Atlantic Ocean. It's a popular surfing beach; the surf rolls in unencumbered by offshore reefs or protective headlands.

If you really want to get away from it all, this is the beach to visit. The black sands stretch as far as you can see and behind the beach are dramatic cliffs. Dotted throughout the beach are small hillocks of grass.

Take a look at the weather before visiting, though; it can get very windy here.

Playa el Golfo

If you've come to see the wonderfully impressive Charco de los Clios, you can't help but notice the beautiful black-sand beach on one side of the shimmering green lake.

This beach, which you'll probably have mostly to yourself, is washed by large surf from the Atlantic Ocean. A visit here is best planned for the afternoon, when the western-facing beach receives the full sun. Be careful when swimming — there are no lifeguards on duty, and if you get into trouble here, it could end badly.

Getting to the beach takes a bit of effort. You'll need to descend a trail to the water's edge and then walk across the sand to the main beach area. If you aren't up for the big hike or are uncomfortable with the large surf, a smaller beach is located right where the trail meets the water.

Note that the green lake is not accessible, it's fenced off to ensure the ecologically sensitive area remains untouched.

Playa Caleton Blanco

Perhaps one of the most unique beaches on Lanzarote is Playa Caleton Blanco. Here, shallow sandy pools form amid an ancient lava flow.

A visit here takes a bit of planning and a quick look at the tide charts. Time it right, and you'll be able to wade out and wallow around in warm, shallow water. Time it wrong, and you'll come to an area devoid of water and will wonder why you made the trek out here.

The other factor to consider when visiting here is the wind. If it's blowing, which it generally does, spending time here becomes unpleasant.

Playa Caleton Blanco makes the list because it's so different from other beaches; however, unless you time it right with the tides and wind, it's not worth going.

Playa de Montana Bermeja

One of the easiest-to-access black-sand beaches on Lanzarote is Playa de Montana Bermeja. Just park your car in the large lot across the roadway and walk to the water's edge. The beach is a small arc of black and grey sand with some polished pebbles. Bring your sandals; the dark-colored sand gets uncomfortably hot on bare feet.

The setting is truly spectacular, with jagged rocks on either side of the beach and red pumice mountains behind. Surfers try to catch a ride on the break to the right side of the beach; their antics provide non-stop entertainment.

Combine a beach day trip here with a stop at Charco de los Clicos and the sea caves of Los Hervideros. Both of these are nearby.

If you're after a lively swathe of shoreline with something for everyone, then Playa de las Cucharas will tick all of the boxes.

This 650-metre stretch of golden sandy beach is the largest and busiest in Costa Teguise, on Lanzarote's east coast.

15. Caletón Blanco

Caletón Blanco

This rocky and sandy spot means ‘big white cove beach' in English, and it's another of Lanzarote's best family-friendly beaches. It's on the island's northern tip, just a couple of minutes' drive away from the fishing village of Orzola.

Best beaches in Lanzarote

15 best beaches in Lanzarote:

1. papagayo beach.

Best beaches Lanzarote? First on our list, Papagayo Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Lanzarote, which its white sands and crystal-clear waters. The ocean in this area seems to have an almost emerald green tone, and the area is small and private.

Many agree that Papagayo Beach is a perfect location for snorkelling, but it’s also great for parents with children because the area is small enough that you can easily see where your little ones are splashing around. In fact, this is one of the best beaches in Spain !

This beach can be found in Los Ajaches, and there’s a beach bar on the hillside near the cove where you can grab some quick refreshments. In case you are spending Christmas in Lanzarote then Papagayo Beach should be the number 1 please to visit on the Xmas day! 🙂

2. Playa de Famara

Found in the north-west of the island, Playa de Famara is the longest of the beaches in Lanzarote. Five kilometres long, and with the ideal conditions for all kinds of water sports; such as standard surfing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing. This really is one of the top beaches Lanzarote!

However, fair warning for those intending on getting in the water, this is a red flag beach. The reason for that is because the surf here can be quite dangerous. There are lifeguards on the beach all year, just in case you’re concerned.

Best beaches in Lanzarote - Playa de Famara

3. Playa Flamingo

Playa Flamingo is a tad further out than some of the other beaches in Lanzarote, but the golden sands and obvious tropical atmosphere is well worth the trip. From swaying palm trees caught in gentle winds to a great range of shops right by the beach, there’s no reason not to visit.

Unlike Playa de Famara, Playa Flamingo is only 200 metres in length. It’s a friendly, relaxed beach, and it’s well-loved by families. This is because there are two breakwaters in the bay, stopping most waves from breaking on the shore of the beach. So, is Playa Flamingo on your list of best Lanzarote beaches?

4. Playa de Montaña Roja

A rustic cove which is great for swimming and sunbathing, Playa de Montaña Roja is all about peace and nature. This small bay is sheltered from a lot of the rushing wind and overzealous waves, but its clear waters are surrounded by stunning scenery.

This beach is right next to a volcano, just in case you’re looking to add a little spice to your beach visit. The volcanoes in Lanzarote are dormant volcanoes that haven’t erupted for a couple of hundred years, so there’s no danger here, it’s just pretty amazing to walk along the rocky surface.

There are 1000 of them, though, which is almost incomprehensible.

5. Playa de las Conchas

A beach that’s better for relaxation than anything else, Playa de las Conchas can be found in the north-west of La Graciosa; which is north of Lanzarote. It’s a delightful beach, with ocean waters that highlight all the blues of the Atlantic, while the various colours of volcanic rock act as a backdrop.

You can get to this beach via ferry at several points during the day, and a return costs just 20 euros from the north of Lanzarote to the island of La Graciosa.

La Graciosa is probably the least popular island of the Canary Island, just because no one really knows about it. One of the top Lanzarote Spain beaches!

6. Caletón Blanco

This beach can be reached by car or by bus, and it’s contrasting black rocks and light sands create a breath-taking scene. The water here is calm, despite the heavier winds, which provides ideal swimming conditions for you and your family.

Thanks to the shallow waters in this sheltered bay, this beach’s little section of ocean is a few degrees warmer than other beaches in the area; which makes it more suitable for younger children who may not have been in the sea before.

You can find this beach southeast of the port city of Órzola. It’s located in a large bay, right by a short gravel road, which leads directly to the beach’s parking facilities.

Best beaches in Lanzarote - Caletón Blanco

7. Caleta del Mojón Blanco

La Caleta del Mojón Blanco can be found in the Haría region of northern Lanzarote, approximately 3 kilometres away from the port of Órzola. The fastest way to get to this beach is to take your car across the LZ-1, or hop on the bus on line number 9.

Like Caletón Blanco, Caleta del Mojón Blanco has quite a few pitch-black volcanic rocks across its shores. This is one of the brightest sandy beaches in Lanzarote, and its extravagant nature makes it the perfect beach for partners to visit.

The area is entirely natural, with no industrial constructs anywhere nearby. In fact, the only thing you’ll find that isn’t part of the beach is the bins for people to use.

Best beaches in Lanzarote - Caleta del Mojón Blanco

8. Playa La Francesa

Just over 400 metres in length, Playa La Francesa is a beautiful and rural beach of outstanding quality. The views of this beach are beyond gorgeous, and the bathing area here is much cooler than its neighbouring beach: La Cocina.

There are no services on the beach, and it can only be reached by bicycle or on foot. It takes approximately 20 minutes to get to Playa La Francesa from Caleta de Sebo’s town centre.

You can see this stunning beach from Mirador del Rio – one of the best places to visit in Europe !

Best beaches in Lanzarote - Playa La Francesa

9. Playa Del Jablillo

Playa Del Jablillo beach is located in Costa Teguise, which is in the east of Lanzarote. It is naturally sheltered from the wind and tides, and it has a breakwater which further guarantees the calmness of the ocean as it travels into this beach’s shores.

Playa Del Jablillo is perfect for the whole family, where you can all enjoy the sun which shines all year.

10. Playa Montaña Bermeja

This beach is so unique. Playa de Montaña Bermeja stretches 400 metres and is filled with black sand. You can find it near the village of El Golfo . Locals and travel sites warn against going into the water at this beach due to its strong waves and harsh current.

It’s a dangerous ocean here, but the view is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

Best beaches in Lanzarote - Playa Montaña Bermeja

11. Playa del Charco de los Clicos

Playa del Charco de los Clicos is located in the southwest of Lanzarote, south of Timanfaya National Park . The beach is situated in a cauldron which is half-sunken into the sea, surrounded by a green-coloured lagoon. It just has to be on the list of Lanzarote best beaches.

The striking colours of the lagoon form an impressive colour contrast to the black lava sand. It’s all completely safe; the ocean’s colour is caused by an algae species in the water.

However, the beach is closed off to protect its natural wonders as it’s one of the top things to see in Lanzarote .

Best beaches in Lanzarote - Playa del Charco de los Clicos

12. Playa Del Pozo

Without a doubt, this is one of the best beaches in Lanzarote! Playa Del Pozo is a part of an area which hosts six beaches. It is located within the Los Ajaches Nature Park in the south of Lanzarote.

This one has golden yellow sands, surrounded by rocky cliffs. The best thing about this beach is definitely the dunes that are dotted around the landscape.

Since this beach is part of a nature park, there is a small entrance fee to pay. However, it is possible to hop from this beach to any of the others in the area.

Best beaches in Lanzarote - Playa Del Pozo

13. Playa Mujeres

For plenty of privacy and another beach with more dunes than you can shake a stick at, Playa Mujeres is the perfect place for you. The stone constructs on this beach are arranged in a semicircle, which is meant to protect guests from the heavier winds.

There are no facilities on this beach, so it’s not likely that you’ll be visiting for long, but it will be a beautiful visit while you’re there.

Best beaches in Lanzarote - Playa Mujeres

14. Playa Blanca

Due to its location, you can enjoy all the advantages of a city when you visit Playa Blanca. The promenade on this beach has everything you need; there are even equipment and clothing shops.

The Playa Blanca consists mainly of light sand, but there is also a plethora of small black pebbles across the beach.

Deck chairs and parasols are forbidden on this beach, and there are no lifeguards. Is Playa Blance top on your list of Lanzarote beaches?

Best beaches in Lanzarote - Playa Blanca

15. Playa Del Risco

A beach for those who are looking for a little peace and quiet. Playa Del Risco can be accessed via a steep coastal path, and as long as you’re on foot, you shouldn’t have any issues.

It does take approximately an hour and a half to get here, though, so you’ll need to be prepared for that.

The plus side is that not many are willing to engage in the journey to reach the beach. It’s often very quiet, and pretty much deserted.

The 20 Best Beaches in Lanzarote

As with all our guides, we’ve spent days touring the coastline to find the most beautiful coves, fabulous shorelines, and secret beaches in Lanzarote.

The following 20 made the cut – whether for their beautiful surroundings, exceptional surf, family-friendliness, or seclusion – they all have something unique to offer.

PLAYA DE LOS POCILLOS

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Get set for a laidback vibe and family-friendly swimming conditions at Playa de los Pocillos. A wide arc of dark golden sand slopes into calm, transparent water that’s ideal for splashing. Relax on sunbeds while the kids build sandcastles. Then, take a stroll along the scenic promenade.

Pop in and out of shops for souvenirs before choosing a restaurant or cafe to settle in with ocean views and succulent seafood. Keep walking and you’ll arrive in bustling Puerto del Carmen in around 15 minutes. It’s also just a quick drive to the horse rides and Wild West shows at the Rancho Texas Park.

PLAYA GRANDE

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Located in the popular seaside resort of Playa del Carmen, Playa Grande is the ideal place to pitch a sun umbrella and settle in for the day. Perfect for little ones, the calm bay is safe for swimming, and the soft golden sand provides hours of sandcastle-building fun! When hunger strikes, you can stroll the waterfront promenade and take your pick of cuisines on offer.

As one of the largest beaches in Lanzarote (hence the name), there’s plenty of room to stretch out, play ball games, or pitch a sun tent – even on the busiest of days. For those who prefer convenience, there are sun loungers ready to rent in the peak season.

PLAYA DE LA ARENA

best beaches to visit lanzarote

A volcanic black sand Lanzarote beach, Playa de la Arena lies near the picturesque town of Playa Quemada. Getting there requires a short hike along the cliffside, but you’ll enjoy the anticipation that builds as the beach reveals itself before you. Snap memorable selfies with the spectacular contrasting colours of turquoise water, white foam and black sand.

This dramatic landscape is ideal for those seeking a more secluded spot to sunbathe and swim. And while there aren’t any facilities nearby, you’ll find a few low-key eateries dotting the shoreline of the sleepy town next door.

PLAYA CALETA DEL CONGRIO

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Among the nudist beaches in Lanzarote, Playa Caleta del Congrio is an untouched wonder within a protected natural area. The dazzling blue sea laps dark golden sand framed by dunes and high cliffs. It’s split in two by a rocky shallow promontory, and each beach has a different feel.

It’s not an exclusively nudist beach, and it’s not a secret with the nearby camping area and Playa Blanca just a short drive away. Pack a picnic for snacks and drinks as, beautifully, you won’t find facilities detracting from the wild oceanscape.

PLAYA DEL PAPAGAYO

best beaches to visit lanzarote

The poster child of Lanzarote beaches, Playa del Papagayo’s shell-shaped strip of golden sand kissed by transparent blue water is truly breathtaking. The main beach features a chiringuito for drinks and snacks, and the area consists of a string of coves framed by volcanic rocks.

It’s located in the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches and protected from the wind. So, look forward to dipping in and out of swimming pool-like water that’s ideal for easy snorkelling and splashing with the kids. The closest resort town is Playa Blanca, just a short drive away.

This beach is featured in our guide to the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands !

PLAYA DE LA CERA

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Also in the sublime setting of the Papagayo Coast, Playa de la Cera is a petite stretch flanked by cliffs and crystal-clear water set off by soft, honey-hued sand. It’s between Playa del Papagayo and Playa del Pozo, so beach days here offer plenty of options to try out new patches of sand.

Get there early in peak seasons, as it fills up quickly with families enjoying the calm bay. Otherwise, don’t miss out on settling in for sensational sunsets.

PLAYA DEL POZO

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Watch boats as they float in to anchor in the cove and snorkel in transparent water at Playa del Pozo. Complete with the serene atmosphere of the Papagayo Coast, this purely natural scene is the spot for quiet lazing and reading in the sun.

On a backdrop of volcanic rock cliffs, the arc of light golden sand is dazzling against the changing blues of the sea.

PLAYA DEL MUJERES

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Often grouped within the best sandy beaches in Lanzarote, Playa del Mujeres rests at the centre of the Los Ajaches Protected Natural Park. Along the coast of Papagayo, it’s the closest cove to Playa Blanca.

A wide expanse of golden, fine sand stretches into heavenly water for floating and snorkelling. Much like the other coves, you won’t find noisy water sports or facilities, so take what you need and settle in for beachy serenity.

PLAYA DORADA

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Some of the best places in Lanzarote dot the southernmost point including White Beach, otherwise known as Playa Blanca. The purpose-built resort is close to the volcanic wonders of Timanfaya National Park, along with the famous beaches of the Papagayo Coast.

With a European Blue Flag, the pristine beach at the centre of the resort, Dorada Beach, features water sports, sunbeds and calm water for relaxing dips. Take a walk along the promenade to Playa Flamingo for a change of scenery. In between, it’s just steps to hotels and a couple of hops, skips and sandy jumps to restaurants and shops.

PLAYA FLAMINGO

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Families staying in Playa Blanca flock to Playa Flamingo for long days of sun, sea and sandcastle building. Breakwaters on either side of the turquoise water ensure calm conditions, and showers and sunbeds with umbrellas keep everyone happy. Regardless, the beach is within walking distance of hotels.

When it’s time for snacks, head to the promenade for shops and cafes right on the shore or get take away and choose a palm tree to enjoy ice creams in the shade. Just before dusk, pick a perch at a bar and sip cold beers as the sun goes down.

PLAYA JANUBIO

best beaches to visit lanzarote

The top beaches in Lanzarote don’t always come wrapped in golden sand. Striking Playa Janubio is a rugged, black sand marvel where strong currents and breaking waves often add to the dramatic scene. Don’t expect to put your camera down, especially at sunset with the contrasting colours at their brilliant best.

It’s backed by a lagoon and the historic sea salt pans, making it a unique spot for a day by the sea. Take a guided tour of the Janubio Salt Flats between swims. Best of all, you’ll get to taste the ‘flavours of Janubio’.

PLAYA MONTANA BERMEJA

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Located deep within the volcanic landscapes of the Timanfaya National Park, the Playa Montana Bermeja sits at the base of its namesake, Volcan Bermeja. This gives the beach a distinctly remote feel, emphasized by the ash black sand.

best beaches to visit lanzarote

At the rear of the beach, you’ll find a lesser-known “charco verde” (green lake). And while it’s not recommended to swim in the sulfur-rich water, it creates a delightful contrast to the fiery red volcanic cone behind it.

Come here for the scenery and to walk along the rugged coastline punctuated by sea caves and secret grottos.

PLAYA DE LOS CICLOS

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Arguably the best beach in Lanzarote for photographers, Playa de los Ciclos is home to the famous Green Lagoon, or Charco Verde. Pitch-black sand highlights the bright green of the lagoon, created by the algae content. Combined with the clear blue sky and turquoise sea, it’s a natural palette that’s an artist’s dream.

The lagoon was formed from the crater of an extinct volcano that submerged into the ocean, and it’s a Natural Reserve. Get the best views of the lagoon from the viewing platform near El Golfo, and stay for the colours of sunset on the beach.

PLAYA TENEZA

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Looking for a rustic and rugged beach in a rural setting? Playa Teneza is one of the best beaches of Lanzarote for you. Near the village of the same name, Playa Teneza impresses with black sand and gravel created by lava debris.

When the wind picks up, try surfing, kiteboarding or windsurfing, though the swimming conditions may be a little tumultuous for many. This is off the well-beaten tourist path in Tinajo near gorgeous, whitewashed villages. Expect plenty of space to yourself as you wander through the quiet sandy streets.

PLAYA DE FAMARA

best beaches to visit lanzarote

One of the best beaches Lanzarote boasts a little bit of everything, Famara beach is a sweeping, golden stretch backed by soaring cliffs. Long strolls are a must on this stretch of over five kilometres. You’ll do so in relative peace as it’s far from the island’s busier resorts.

Located on the northwest coast, the wind is your friend here if you love water sports. The surf’s usually up, so it’s a favourite of surfers across the globe. Always photogenic, the cliffs of Famara are stepping-off points for hang gliding. However, catch them at sunset reflected on low tide and you’ll capture those mirror-like images worthy of postcards.

PLAYA DE LA CATERÍA

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Ready to catch some serious waves? Many say Playa de la Cantería is possibly the best beach in Lanzarote for surfers. The island’s most northern beach features fine, dark golden sand and fantastic views across to La Graciosa. It’s usually the domain of pros, due to the strong waves, so just check the conditions before venturing in.

If you’d rather sit back, relax and watch the action from the safety of the sand, stroll in from the village of Orzola – where you’ll also find fresher than fresh seafood – and find a spacious spot on the sand. If you’re feeling a tad energetic, poke around the cliffs to find caves and gorgeous photo backdrops.

PLAYA CALETON BLANCO

best beaches to visit lanzarote

When it comes to Lanzarote white sand beaches, Playa Caleton Blanco owns the crown. Squish your toes in the pristine, white sand before taking a dip in a cove of opalescent water. When the tide’s out, children love the natural, shallow water for safe splashing.

Wait for high tide for spectacular snorkelling around rocky hideouts. To add to the idyllic scene, black lava formations back the sand and you’ll find them across a string of coves in the area. It’s located on the island’s northern tip, just a short drive or walk from Orzola where you’ll pick up goodies for a day at the beach.

PLAYA DE LA GARITA

best beaches to visit lanzarote

The tranquil village of Arrieta in the north of Lanzarote hosts the golden sands of Playa de la Garita. It’s a family-friendly spot with shallow swimming water and plenty of space – across the almost kilometre stretch – for running around or having a game of beach volleyball.

Next to the picturesque pier, you’ll find El Charcón beach for another spot to soak up the sun. People travel from across the island to eat local cuisine at restaurants dotting Arrieta’s narrow streets and beachfront locations.

PLAYA DEL JABILLO

best beaches to visit lanzarote

A sandy jewel of popular Costa Teguise, Playa del Jablillo is sheltered by, and decorated with, dark volcano stones on either side of a lagoon-like cove. This is a lively beach backed by resorts, where sunbeds dot the golden sand and parents watch lazily as kids play in the sand and sea. It’s among the nicest beaches in Lanzarote for families with small children.

For beginner divers, Playa del Jablillo is a launching place to learn. Or, simply step off the sand with your snorkel and mask to explore the transparent underwater world. If you can tear yourself away from the beachscape, it’s just a leisurely stroll to cafes and restaurants on the promenade.

PLAYA DE LAS CONCHAS

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Who doesn’t love ‘paradise island’ scenes? You’ll find it on the islet of La Graciosa, which is a quick ferry trip from Lanzarote’s north coast. Playa de las Conchas retains its virgin beauty due to its remoteness. After the ferry ride, you’ll cycle for about 20 minutes or get there via a 4×4 taxi.

The sandy beach is named after the shells scattered across the sand, and it rests beneath the red-tinted Montana Bermeja volcano. Climb to the summit for panoramic views. It’s impossible to resist a dip in the sea, but wait for a shallow tidal lagoon to form, or head around the coast to the more sheltered Playa Lambra. You’ll find a red flag here warning of strong undertows due to the steep entry into the Atlantic.

No matter your mood, the best beaches in Lanzarote deliver something to suit everyone. Feel like doing nothing at all? Settle in at a resort such as Playa Blanca or Costa Teguise for beautiful beaches and all the facilities you need at your fingertips. Get off the beaten path in the far north, where windy conditions ensure plenty of water sports thrills. If you’re feeling spontaneous, simply close your eyes and point to a spot on Lanzarote’s coastline. You can’t go wrong in this sunny Canarian paradise.

Best Beaches in Lanzarote

by Charlotte Walton | Lanzarote

best beaches to visit lanzarote

So, you’re looking to find the best beaches in Lanzarote? You have come to the right place! Growing up in Lanzarote I spent A LOT of time at the beach. Every day of summer, and almost every weekend throughout the year to be exact. So, I’d consider myself an expert when it comes to picking the best beaches in Lanzarote.

#1 Playa de Papagayo + its smaller beaches

I can’t not start with Playa de Papagayo. If you’ve ever seen any postcards from Lanzarote, I can guarantee you that this beach is featuring on the front cover. Think turquoise waters and soft white sand, Playa de Papagayo is a great place to relax and go for a quiet swim.

The road to get to this beach is a dirt road, and will never be tarmacked due to it being a protected area. It’s fine for small cars, just take it easy.

Best Beaches in Lanzarote

The beach is located at the South of the island, at the edge of a cliff and has a half-moon like shape, protecting you from the strong northern winds of Lanzarote. This is probably one of the best beaches on the island in terms of being sheltered from the winds.

Playa de Papagayo attracts a lot of tourists and locals alike, so on the weekends and throughout summer, expect to share the beach with many others. The great thing is, to the right of the main beach are various smaller beaches for you to enjoy.

The further you go, the less busy it is so if you are someone who is looking to escape the crowds, your best bet is to head in that direction. Playa de Papagayo is a protected area on the island, and so there is a small entrance fee of €3 per car. If you are a resident on the island, it’s free.

Once you arrive down the bottom of the hill, you will see that you can either go straight (slight right) or continue following the road round to the left. If you go left you will see the main beach (the busiest one) and if you choose to go right, you can park your car and set off walking to discover the smaller beaches to your right. Either way, it’s worth driving up to the main beach, even if it’s just to see it as it’s stunning!

#2 Caleton Blanco

Best Beaches in Lanzarote

Next up is Caleton Blanco, a beach located at the north tip of the island next to Orzola. This area of the island is very unique – with a mix of white sand dunes and black lava rocks. There are a few beaches along this coast for you to choose from. Some a lot quieter than others and some with shallow rock pools.

There are two “main” areas – one is a small and incredibly beautiful beach, and the other boasts the shallow pools.

Both areas are mostly visited by locals.

If you drive towards Orzola along the coast, you will see various parking spots on the left hand side of the road. Simply park your car and cross the road to get to the beach.

If you type “Caleton Blanco” into Google Maps , you will find the main areas.

If you want something secluded, there are various places you can stop before you arrive to the main beach.

There are mini rock walls on the beach that you can sit inside to protect you from the wind. Make sure to wear sunscreen and your swimming stuff as these little coves are the perfect sun trap.

You start to feel hot quite quickly so a dip in the cool ocean will be necessary!

#3 Playa del Risco

Think Jurrasic Park meets the beach.

During spring-time the island is more green and so the cliffs down to the beach remind me of Jurrasic Park. During the summer months the cliffs will return to their natural browns, though will still be as beautiful.

Playa del Risco is probably one of the most under-visited beaches on the island because it’s a bit of a trek to get there.

Best Beaches in Lanzarote

It is a steep one, although doable for those who are relatively fit and definitely worth the trip!

If you aren’t very fit, you will most probably struggle on this hike. Coming back up is tough, however making this journey, you will be rewarded with the softest sand, and a clear view of La Graciosa.

Playa del Risco is located near the Mirador del Rio in the north of Lanzarote. The walk down is just as beautiful as the beach so if you’re up for the adventure, make a visit to this secluded beach!

There are tons of walks to discover across this incredible landscape but here are 3 beautiful hikes in Lanzarote.

Is it safe to walk to Playa del Risco?

The path down is clearly marked and easy to find. It can be slippy at parts due to the loose gravel however it is doable. Just take it easy 🙂

#4 Playa de Montaña Bermeja or Playa del Janubio

best beaches to visit lanzarote

While we are talking about the best beaches in Lanzarote, I have to include a black beach! Lanzarote boasts a number of beautiful black beaches and they are definitely worth a visit.

Black beaches are pretty rare and extremely soft, plus they somehow seem to sparkle.

One small beach on the island with black sand is located between El Golfo and Los Hervidores. Another black beach you could visit is just infront of the salt fields (las salinas).

#5 Playa de las Conchas, La Graciosa

So, if you didn’t know, La Graciosa island is part of the Teguise Municipality of Lanzarote and so in essence “belongs” to the island.

Therefore, I can include my 3 favourite beaches in La Graciosa in this post! If you haven’t heard of La Graciosa or weren’t originally planning to make a visit over there, I highly recommend checking out this post:

2 day trip to La Graciosa

I think I’ll change your mind & you’ll be booking your ferry ticket asap!

So, included in the best beaches in Lanzarote post is Playa de las Conchas, and once you get there you’ll understand why.

La Graciosa, in my opinion has some of the best beaches in the whole Canary Islands.

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Playa de las Conchas, translated to ‘shell beach’ has the softest white sand and turquoise waters that you wouldn’t believe you were still in the Canaries. Think Greece, or the Philippines.

TIP! Be careful in the waves at this side of the island. They can be very big and also dangerous. There are periods where the water is calmer and so you can go for a dip. It can also be fun to play in the waves but make sure you aren’t alone.

If you would like to swim, the following 2 beaches are great.

#6 Montaña Amarilla, La Graciosa

best beaches to visit lanzarote

This beach is very similar to Playa de Papagayo with its incredible turquoise coloured water. It is located at the bottom of Montaña Amarilla, directed translated to “yellow mountain”.

The colours at this beach are incredible and I highly recommend going to visit. You can either walk for 45 minutes from Caleta de Sebo (the main port/town in La Graciosa) or you can pay €5pp for a 4×4 jeep to drop you off.

If you want a lift back you will have to arrange this with your driver beforehand and it will be another €5pp to go back.

Last up on my list of the best beaches in Lanzarote is Playa de La Francesa, La Graciosa.

#7 Playa de la Francesa, La Graciosa

On your way to Montaña Amarilla from the port you will stumble across this beach that overlooks the cliffs of Famara, Lanzarote.

It is a beautiful place to spend a few hours. Private boats dock in the water here and it’s a very calm place to swim. This beach is usually popular among young families.

best beaches to visit lanzarote

There you have it, my favourite beaches in Lanzarote! There are many other beaches around the island, especially in the tourist areas which are also worth a visit. If you stay in Puerto del Carmen, Playa Chica is a great place to go. If you are closer to Costa Teguise, then Playa de las Cucharas is cool!

Winter sun, emerald shallows and winds that are perfect for watersports – the call of the Canaries beckons from its shorelines, and Lanzarote’s balmy blonde beaches lead the way for a seafront holiday .

Nature’s colour palette of black, red and gold grains form volcanic and man-made stretches of sand, fringing buzzing coastal resorts from north to south.

With over 100 beaches to bathe, the Brit holiday hotspot promises plenty of spots to pop a parasol or paddle in the temperate waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Some of Spain’s best sands wrap the southernmost tip of the laid-back Los Ajaches Natural Park, world-class waves batter Famara with surf in the north and the island capital Arrecife is blessed with a Blue Flag quality coastline.

Whether staying all-in by the white swathes of Playa Blanca or finding paradise on the island’s little sister, La Graciosa, here are the best  playas  to lay your towel in Lanzarote.

Playas de Papagayo, Los Ajaches Natural Park

Applauded as the star of Lanzarote’s swathes, the golden beaches of Papagayo take prime position on the southernmost tip of the Los Ajaches Natural Park – follow the dirt track and pay the €3 entry fee for paradise found. The popular crescent cove sheltered by cliffs makes for a relaxing reading spot, ideal for topping up a tan, treading turquoise waters and snorkelling reefs teeming with marine life. And you can forget sand-crusted sandwiches; clifftop Be Papagayo offers a menu plentiful with seafood paella and tapas platters.

Playa de Famara, Teguise

Surfs up on the north coast and there’s 6km of untamed shore to explore on Playa de Famara. Powerful winds produce consistent swells, breaks and rolling waves in this slice of the Natural Park of the Chinijo Archipelago so Famara’s fine sands are a surfer's haven whatever your style of board. The local fishing village of La Caleta de Famara offers fresh fish refuels after rides on the water and there’s a wealth of surf shacks and schools ready to take you from novice to expert.

Charco de Los Clicos, El Golfo

The black sands of El Golfo meet an algae-green lagoon and rust-toned cliffs on Lanzarote’s west coast. A landscape of contrasts, protected Charco de Los Clicos sits on the crater of an extinct volcano and though swimming is prohibited at the nature reserve, a lookout point allows visitors to watch the dark tombolo between waters green and blue bear the brunt of wild Atlantic waves.

Playa Dorada, Playa Blanca

With clear, warm waters and clean, fine sand, Playa Dorada sparkles afront the family-centric all-inclusives and sprawling holiday resorts of Playa Blanca. Peppered with plenty of blue parasols, pedalos and kayaks to hire, the 300m artificial bay is best enjoyed during Lanzarote’s mild shoulder seasons to avoid the buzz of the summer holidays.

Playa Mujeres, Los Ajaches Natural Park

Atop the Papagayo  playas , the secluded stretch of Mujeres is a dirt track away from the hustle of commercialised Playa Blanca. Backdropped by Lanzarote’s barren desertscapes an inviting palette of blues laps the wide shore and a float on the surface is a popular pastime with snorkellers seeking a glimpse of octopi and angel sharks.

Playa del Reducto, Arrecife

In the heart of laid laid-back island capital, Arrecife, Playa del Reducto’s golden sands and turquoise waters have earned their Blue Flag status. A lofty palm-fringed promenade of beach boutiques and contemporary art museums frame the urban crescent, and the calm shallows – ideal for children to have a paddle – are well-suited for a sunning session with a mojito or mocktail in hand.

Playa de las Conchas, La Graciosa

Though an island in its own right, La Graciosa’s rugged northern coast is littered with empty bleached white beaches that put the swathes of mainland Spain to shame. For a day trip to the dunes of Las Conchas, an expansive shore studded only with rocks and tidewrack, it is a short ferry ride from the tip of Orzola in Lanzarote to the  playa  paradise – well worth the endeavour for an uninterrupted stretch out on the sand.

Lovers of sunbaked sand, volcanic scenery and revitalising swims in the Atlantic will find paradise on the best beaches in Lanzarote

Explore the best beaches in Lanzarote and uncover gems like the Charco de los Clicos

Move over Tenerife, there is another island jostling for the top spot for the best beaches in the Canary Islands . Lanzarote may not be the first island that springs to mind when searching for beach escapes. But one thing is for sure, it is not short of beaches. There seems to be a beach for every occasion. From wide open stretches of white sand to ebony-black volcanic coves , it doesn’t matter what your plans are, there is a beach to match. So if you are planning to visit this fiery island on your travels, make sure that you check out the best beaches in Lanzarote. To make life a little easier and to take the stress out of exploring, we have compiled a list of the top 10 must-visit beaches on the island. How many will you tick off?

The perfect time to visit the best beaches in Lanzarote

One of the best things about visiting Lanzarote is that you don’t need to be confined to travelling during the school holidays. This island is closer to Africa than it is to Spain which brings with it an eternal springtime. Think of warm gentle breezes and baking hot sunshine during the summer and mild, dry weather in the winter. Every day is a beach day in Lanzarote but summer is the busier time of year. The best time to visit the beaches in Lanzarote and avoid the crowds is mid-September when the weather is still warm but the locals are back at work and school. Take advantage of the winter sun and start planning the ultimate beach break and enjoy the best beaches in Lanzarote.

1. Catch some rays at Papagayo beach Lanzarote

Calling all sun worshipers. If you are staying in one of the Lanzarote beach resorts then don’t miss out on a trip to Playa Papagayo. Situated on the southern tip of the island, Papagayo is certainly one of the most well-known beaches in Lanzarote and comprises a series of beaches separated by high cliffs and volcanic rocks, forming a number of sheltered bays. This fabulous white sand beach is located in a nature reserve so prepare yourself for breathtaking scenery both on land and beneath the waves. Enjoy views of the Ajaches Natural Monument mountains as you soak up the sun on the paperwhite sand .

The main Papagayo beach is the last one that you'll reach before the Punta del Papagayo, travelling east from Playa Blanca

The main Papagayo beach is the last one that you'll reach before the Punta del Papagayo, travelling east from Playa Blanca. This is an ideal choice if you’re looking to spend the day out at the beach, where you can find a chiringuito (beach shack) that sits above the cove and treat yourself to a meal by the sea.

And, pack a snorkel to discover the colourful marine life that awaits you in the topaz waters. A visit to this beach is one of the best things to do in Lanzarote and it certainly deserves to sit in the first position on the list of top 10 beaches in Lanzarote.

Papagayo is often listed as one of the best beaches in Lanzarote and its easy to see why

Sunning yourself on the shores of Papagayo beach is a must if you visit Lanzarote

2. Enjoy sightseeing and waves at the White Beach Lanzarote

If you’re looking for the best family beaches in Lanzarote for an enjoyable day out with the kids, Playa Blanca is the place to be and is ideally situated in a central location at the heart of the resort close to other local landmarks such as Arrecife beach and the Timanfaya National Park.

This European Blue Flag stretch boasts bright white sands and sheltered bays , where lifeguards are on hand, so you can ensure the little ones are playing safely. The calm waters offer good conditions for diving and snorkelling and, of course, make it the perfect place for a refreshing dip, as well as one of the best beaches in Lanzarote.

There are plenty of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants backing onto the beachfront, as well as several ice cream parlours if you fancy cooling off and satisfying your sweet tooth.

Stay at a beachfront hotel and enjoy access to the best beaches in Lanzarote like Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca not only boasts European Blue Flag status but it is also the perfect place for a refreshing dip

3. Playa Grande beach Lanzarote - another family favourite

Arguably the birthplace of tourism in Lanzarote, Playa Grande offers long stretches of sand and plenty of amenities to enjoy. While it may not be the most visually appealing beach, what it lacks in charm, it certainly makes up for in fun.

Playa Grande is ideal for families looking for beach holidays in Lanzarote

Playa Grande is ideal for families looking for beach holidays in Lanzarote thanks to the calm waters and bucket and spade-friendly shoreline. The offshore inflatable water park that appears during the summer months is certainly not to be missed. And, it is worth noting that it is one of the best beaches in Lanzarote for people with reduced mobility. It is safe to say that this is an all-rounder!

4. Famara beach Lanzarote - The best beach for taking a stroll

Not all beaches were made for sunbathing. Some lend themselves perfectly for a gentle barefoot stroll along the shoreline. This is certainly true for the 6 km long Lanzarote Famara beach . While this picture-postcard beach looks like the ideal sunbathing spot, it usually gets pretty windy here making it perfect for surfers.

If you’re planning on riding some waves during your holiday, Playa Famara is certainly the best surfing beach in Lanzarote , where you’ll spot plenty of professionals showcasing their skills. Its strong winds make it trickier for beginners to test the waves, but you’ll find surf schools in the village that can show you the right moves and also issue forecasts for best conditions - and times to avoid.

Take a stroll along the white sandy bay and watch the turquoise waters crash against the cliffs that surround this beach. This stunning display of natural beauty, including views of the neighbouring island of La Graciosa , makes Famara one of the best beaches in Lanzarote.

The stunning backdrop of rugged cliffs is also popular with hand-gliders, so depending on your level of fear factor, you could have a jam-packed day of fun and thrills at Playa Famara.

5. Las Cucharas beach Lanzarote - a surfer’s paradise

If you are a thrill-seeker looking for your next adventure head to Las Cucharas, one of the best beaches in Lanzarote for watersports. This white sand beach on the east coast is the home to the windsurfing European Freestyle Pro Tour championships which are held here each year. It is one of the top beaches in Lanzarote for adrenaline junkies and there are numerous places to rent the correct gear for your chosen activity. Luckily, there is a breakwater that makes the shallow part of the ocean feel more protected which is ideal for families with young children. And, the beach is divided into two creating an area for swimming and an area for sports. While this beach is famous for action sports, it is also an ideal place for those staying close by to enjoy a romantic date while watching the sunset.

Thrill-seekers will love participating in watersports while spending the day at Las Cucharas beach

6. Playa El Ancla, a Costa Teguise beach

Since Lanzarote is a volcanic paradise, it only seems right to enjoy its natural beauty. Get up close to the lava formations at Playa El Ancla , a small Lanzarote black sand beach where locals have adopted the habit of using the lava rocks as a place to sunbathe. While visiting Lanzarote make sure to venture to this beach. Explore what lies in the hidden rock pools, take a stroll along the rocky promenade that jets out into the water or simply enjoy a swim in the crystal clear sea. The exotic surroundings are hard to resist and it is no surprise that it is one of the best beaches in Lanzarote for locals and tourists alike.

7. Playa Dorada beach Lanzarote- a paradise for watersports

Situated to the east of Playa Blanca, Playa Dorada is a gorgeous man-made beach that encompasses calm waters that are ideal for kids. Hammocks, sunbeds and sun shades are available to rent, as well as exhilarating water sports activities on offer for adrenaline junkies.

8. Discover Catelón Blanco, an idyllic setting close to Puerto del Carmen beach Lanzarote

Catelón Blanco is located north of Lanzarote in Puerto del Carmen and is a string of beautiful tiny coves of contrasting glistening white sands and jet-black lava rocks. The kids will be in their element exploring the shallow natural rock pools created by the tide, while parents can find a peaceful spot to lay on the soft sands, or perch against a slab of volcanic rock and enjoy an afternoon read. There are a handful of restaurants dotted around the harbour offering a taste of traditional Canarian cuisine, where you can indulge in some of the finest fish restaurants on the island. This fusion of beach and gastronomy make this one of the best beaches in Lanzarote for a day in the sun.

9. Playa del Charco de los Clicos, a black beach Lanzarote

If you want to snap stunning beach pictures for ‘the gram’ then head straight to Playa del Charco de los Clicos. It is not the picture-postcard view of Lanzarote that appears in the holiday brochures but instead a volcanic black sand beach Lanzarote locals like to call their own. This multicoloured beach boasts red cliffs, black sand and an emerald green lagoon, rich in algae perfect for an attention-grabbing Instagram snap. Of course, the ocean provides the ideal bathing spot for those keen to take a dip.

Charco de los Clicos is one of the best beaches in Lanzarote thanks to its eye-catching green lagoon

While the green lagoon at Charco de los Clicos is eye-catching, the Ocean is ideal for a refreshing dip

10. Enjoy a romantic date on an Orzola Beach Lanzarote

Is there anything more romantic than enjoying a windswept stroll, hand in hand along a picturesque beach? Well, Lanzarote certainly sets the scene nicely with Caletón Blanco, an Orzola beach with a mesmerising colour palette of white sand, ebony lava-coloured rocks and piercing sapphire blue sea. At low tide, there is a patchwork of rock pools to uncover and at high tide, the ocean is perfect for a quick swim. While this beach is secluded, it is one of the best beaches in Lanzarote for couples, especially if you plan to island-hop to La Graciosa.

Best Time and 7 Best Beaches - Lanzarote Guide

Best Time and 7 Best Beaches - Lanzarote Guide

Spain

When Is the Best Time

Lanzarote is a great destination throughout the year for those seeking sunshine, fantastic beaches, and a unique landscape. Lanzarote is one of the driest Canary Islands, experiencing precipitation in less than 20 days. Rain is more of a quick shower, and the entire amount of rain is a maximum of 150 ml. All the temperatures mentioned are in the shade, so add some degrees in the sun.

Beaches next to El Golfo in Lanzarote

Trade winds cause a mild climate and constant pleasant temperatures the entire year. A real winter doesn’t exist, feeling more like a lovely summer, but summer is not too hot because of the breeze. Average day temps are above 20°C throughout the year, excellent for sunbathing. I categorize the seasons slightly different to give you a better overview of what to expect in Lanzarote.

The calm sea at Playa del Pozo

The peak season lasts from November to April (Easter holidays) when Europeans escape from their colder wintertime. During the summer school holidays in July and August, Lanzarote, especially Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen, and Playa Blanca get busy again, like elsewhere in Europe. Do you only want to know the 7 Best Beaches? Check out my Table of Contents below.

Weather and Sea Temperature for Lanzarote

Surfer at Playa del Pozo

Like all Canary Islands, the south is a little warmer and drier than the north. Usually, there is always a light cooling breeze.

Spring (March-May)

View from Mirador del Rio to La Graciosa

Spring is a lovely season, with temperatures ranging from 23-25°C. A shower can occur in March and April, but there is nothing to worry about. May is already completely dry. Night temps are a little cool, around 15°C, and because of the wind, a jacket and trousers may be needed for the evening.

Endemic plants at the Famara cliffs

The sea is still cold from the wintertime, and the water temperature is around 18°C in March and abruptly warms up in mid-April, reaching 20°C.

Summer (June-October)

The turquoise blue water in the pool of Jameos del Agua

This is a real summer with day temps ranging between 26 and 29°C in the shade. Night temps are around 20°C; however, I would bring a jacket for the evening due to the wind. There isn’t any rain; the first shower occurs in October. The sea temp is climbing from 21°C in June to 23°C in September and October. On scorching days, the wind transports the heat from the hot lava fields, and it feels like being blown by a hairdryer.

Catamaran and sailboat on the sea

This weather phenomenon occurs for a couple of days only. In September, it is less windy. In October, the light during the golden hour is exceptional, which you must experience by yourself (tip by the local guide Mash).

Autumn (November)

ME between one meter high cactee

November is still warm at 24°C during the day, and night temps are around 17°C. A rain shower or two can happen, but no umbrella is needed. The sea is still pleasant, around 22°C, perfect for swimming, though.

Winter (December-February)

Me standing on a rock at one of the beaches at Malpais de Corona

The winter is a busy season due to the pleasant temps above 20°C. It is cooler at night, around 15°C, but it is a little chilly because of the wind. I prefer a jacket and long trousers during this season. The sun shines on average for 7 hours daily. A shower can occur, most likely at the turn of the year.

Playa Honda lifeguard tower for the peak season

The sea temperature drops below 20°C mid to the end of December but is still pleasant for swimming (IMO). Winter means “Calima” season; the visibility is poor due to the Sahara sand. The wind transports the Saharan haze to the Canary Islands, reaching Lanzarote first.

Orange yellow sunset in the desert during the calima phenomenom

Usually, the Calima lasts for a couple of days, but 2022 was different. The calima was hovering over the archipelago for quite a while, with short interruptions from January to mid-March. Nevertheless, the temps are lovely, and due to the calima, it was a little warmer than usual.

7 Must-Visit Beaches and Pools in Lanzarote

Beach next to Charco de los Clicos with people sunbathing

You can sunbathe and swim throughout the year in Lanzarote, also in the wintertime. These are my seven favourite spots spread around the island.

1 Famara Beach – Playa de Famara

The long Famara Beach and Cliffs

The yellow Famara Beach stretches for 2.5 km, offering breathtaking views. The beach is excellent for a long walk or a bath. The high Famara Cliffs form a dramatic backdrop to Famara Beach and Dunes.

View from the top of the Famara Cliffs and down to the Famara Beach

Famara is famous for its high waves and is an excellent spot for surfers. I do not recommend swimming here, but it is great fun playing with the waves in shallow water. It is quite a walk until the sea gets deep. Nevertheless, be careful with the currents.

The Famara Dunes with srub and the high cliffs in the back

For me, it is the most beautiful beach and fantastic for a long walk in jaw-dropping scenery. Bring a snack or lunch and a cold beverage, and watch the surfers and kite surfers protected from the wind in stony beach shelters. Famara is also a great place to watch the sunset. Plenty of onside road parking is available, but no restrooms. There is a small supermarket just a two-minute drive to the village.

Location: ( Google Maps )

2 Papagayo Beach

The Papagayo Beach even full of sunbathers in the winter

It is a beautiful beach with crystal clear water, also excellent for snorkelling. You would not expect such gorgeous beaches on an island where a quarter is covered with lava.

Beaches next to Papagayo

The four beaches, Papagayo, Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo, and Playa Caleta del Congrio, are protected from the wind in a nature park without any facilities. Swimming was fantastic, but be aware that there are no lifeguards on duty.

Beach sign at a rock leading to Pozo and Papagayo

The entrance fee of 3 Euro per vehicle has to be paid at the gate; pedestrians and bikes are free of charge. It’s a gravel, dusty, 6 km long road with potholes to these famous beaches. All beaches are signposted.

Parking on gravel road for Playa del Pozo and Papagayo

Huge car parks at each bay are available. One restaurant at the clifftop offers a spectacular view, but due to the location, it is always busy. Restrooms are available for guests; others must pay a 1 Euro fee.

  • Location ( Google Maps )

3 Malpais de Corona in the Northeast

Beaches at Malpais de Corona in the north east of Lanzarote

These pristine white sandy beaches protected from the sharp lava rocks look like a Caribbean paradise. The secluded beaches and bays are excellent for swimming. Huge waves crash against the outer lava formations. No facilities, limited parking for free, therefore no crowds. To be on the safe side, wear water shoes for swimming at all three beaches.

La Caleta ( Google Maps  )

La Caleta Beach in the Malpais de Corona

The crystal turquoise blue water and the white sand beaches are spectacular. Malpais de Corona means bead land, but it’s a unique landscape with fascinating plants. It is a quiet beach and perfect for swimming—parking roughly one hundred meters before to the right.

Playa de Caleta del Mero  ( Google Maps Parking)

Playa de Caleta del Mero

We were in awe of what a breathtaking landscape mother nature provides in this area—a picturesque beach with weathered boats and a great spot for swimming.

A long grown yellow sand flower

Due to the small amount of rain in the winter, different plants and flowers were in bloom in the dunes. Opposite the parking is the beach and protected bay.

Playa Caleton Blanco Google Maps

Playa Caleton Blanco at low tide

Playa Caleton Blanco is the most popular of the three and easier to access with a huge car park just in front. It’s shallow water for 30-40 meters before it gets deeper.

Playa Caleton Blanco plus parking at high tide

During low tide, even far more to walk. However, this beach, with its lagoon, is perfect for children. I recommend high tide for this lagoon.

4 Playa Honda

Playa Honda in the morning with a volcano on the horizon

Playa Honda is ideally located in the island's centre, close to the airport but unbelievably quiet. Six clean beaches in different size from Playa Guasimeta at the Arrecife airport until Playa del Reducto are connected by a 6 km long seafront promenade that leads to Arrecife City.

Playa Honda with sunbathers during the day

The longest stretch is Playa Honda. It is more of a residential area without the big resorts popular by locals using the promenade with great views of the sea for their exercises in the morning and evening.

The endless Playa Honda

The promenade and beaches are less busy viewer tourists come to this area. The main beach Playa Honda is watched by lifeguards in the summer. During our stay in the winter, we went to Playa del Cable to swim in the protected bay daily. Showers are available at Playa Honda, perfect for getting rid of the sand before returning. Along the promenade are a number of excellent restaurants and cafés.

Sunrise at Playa Honda - Beach with fishermen boats

Playa Honda is also a magnificent place to watch the sunrise while enjoying your first coffee in the morning. It's definitely one of my favourite places to be in Lanzarote.

  • Sunrise and Sunset time

Our dinner at La Orilla Beach Bar at Playa Honda

Don't miss out on La Orilla Beach Bar with its excellent fresh tuna bowl and cocktails. It is a beautiful location to chill out in a relaxing atmosphere.

5 Costa Teguise Beaches

The perfectly located Melia Hotel and it's beach in Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise is a popular destination, lively with some excellent resorts next to the sea and a long promenade. It is less busy than Playa Blanca but not less attractive, located in the middle of Lanzarote.

Golden sand beaches and lava rocks at Costa Teguise

The five picture-perfect golden beaches are excellent for swimming. The main beach is Playa de las Cucharas, with lifeguards on duty, and it is excellent for children.

Beaches and Promenade at Costa Teguise in the evening.

Restrooms and showers are available. Lots of cafes, shops, and bars are along the strip. It is the third-largest tourist area and is perfectly located to explore the main tourist attractions of Lanzarote.

Teguise town center and church at sunset

Costa Teguise was developed on purpose as an alternative to the south and to host more tourists in Lanzarote in the 70s and ’70s, a ten-minute drive from Teguise.

6 Playa del Janubio

Playa de Janubio dotted with sunbathers and beach walker

This is a small black pebble beach near the desalination "salinas". It is a beautiful spot to watch the sea and sunset. Olivine stones occur here on the pebble beach.

A woman swimming at Janubio

It is unsafe for swimming due to the currents but excellent for a bath. Also, water shoes are essential here because of the bigger rocks in the sea. A huge gravel car park is available but without any facilities. Check out the sunset time for Janubio, and you also get to know when it gets dark in Lanzarote.

7 Los Charcones -  Natural Pools

A woman taking pictures at Los Charcones Pools at sunset

The pools are situated in the southwest, half an hour's drive from Playa Blanca. Watching the sunset at Los Charcones or swimming in the natural pools is otherworldly. Swimming or, rather, taking a bath in one of the pools is safe during low tide only on days with a low swell.

  • Tide Times
  • Location ( Locus Pro )

A group bathing in the Los Charcones Natural Pools

This is not a beach and definitely not recommended for children. Getting here by rental car is tricky on this bumpy gravel road. We had a jeep; therefore, we could reach this fantastic place easily. Google is not updated and leads you the wrong way. These are one-way roads, and you must make a U-turn on LZ 2 north to return to the south and the access road.

The gravel access road to the natural pools

Entering these gorgeous natural pools is at your own risk. There are lots of pools along the coast. Even if it doesn’t look dangerous, the waves are treacherous. The wind was too strong during our visit, and the waves were sometimes too powerful, smashing into the pools.

Sunset at Los Charcones Pools

Proper shoes are essential for climbing over sharp volcanic rocks to the pools. We sat here for hours, watched the spectacular scenery and enjoyed the breathtaking sunset. For me, it is one of the most fascinating places, especially on a windy day and on top of not being crowded due to the remote location.

The rough gravel road and parking at Los Charcones

Parking alternative at the desalination plant and a 3 km – 45 minutes long walk. ( Locus Map )

Which is the Windiest Canary Island?

The windiest islands are Lanzarote and Fuerteventura; nevertheless, even in the winter, we enjoyed the breeze while hiking on the volcanic surface. Most beaches in Lanzarote are either wind-protected or have stony beach shelters.

3 Accommodation Tips

We visited Lanzarote twice and spent quite a while in Lanzarote to escape the cold winter in our home country. Before I book a hotel or apartment, I always check the rating and the location. These tips are from my own experience from the last winter.

Costa Teguise

Rental apartment with huge balcony

This apartment with two sleeping rooms was very well equipped, newly renovated, super clean, and spacious for a family of four. It is located in the centre of Costa Teguise, a five-minute walk to the beaches, and very quiet. It is situated on the upper level, with an excellent sea view. We felt like being at home in this cosy accommodation.

Hotel

If you don't want to prepare any meal during your vacation instead of enjoying an excellent buffet for breakfast and dinner, this is my second recommendation. For me, this hotel has one of the best locations next to the sea but is within easy reach of all the sights in Lanzarote.

Playa Honda

Playa Honda beach and sunbathers

These apartments have a fantastic location within walking distance of the restaurants and bars but are not too close to get disturbed at night. Watch the sunrise from your balcony or terrace or swim just in front of your rental home. They are close to the airport of Arrecife but really quiet. You even have an outdoor hot tub, which I appreciate in the wintertime.

Camping Tip

The Papagayo campground will open on Easter 2022, and for the first time, it will remain open throughout the year. This site is quiet and beautifully located, and although accessible on a gravel road, only you can get there with your car or campervan if you drive carefully. Location Campground Google Maps

Best beaches in Lanzarote – South – Guide and Map

Lanzarote  is a stunning island in the Canary archipelago, a destination you shouldn’t miss for  its incredible volcanic and moon-style panoramas  (like the unbelievable vineyards ), but it still shines as a good destination for beach lovers. This guide is going to show you the best beaches in Lanzarote southern coast!

How to get to the best Beaches in Lanzarote?

As usual, let’s start with an easy map of the best beaches in Lanzarote southern coast! As you should already know if you’re a follower of my website, yellow pins mark the beaches and blue pins mark alternative parkings.

Natural beaches in Lanzarote – Playa del Papagayo, Playa Mujeres

Let’s start this journey with a look at the wildest and most natural beaches in Lanzarote.

We are talking about a set of beaches on the south-east corner of the island, all relatively near and similar but still very interesting.

The biggest are  Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo e Playa del Papagayo.

If you feel like walking a little bit more through easy walk paths between the rocks you can reach many other smaller ones, like  Playa Caletòn San Marcial, Playa de la Cera o Playa del Congrio , that you can still see on my map above just zooming in.

Playa Mujeres, una delle più belle spiagge nel sud di Lanzarote

These beaches,  Playa Mujeres  overall, are definitely wide even if the map could confuse you. Look at that small dots on the picture above, they are people.

Remember that these beaches have no services, so always remember water, solar cream and umbrellas.

These beaches directly face the power of the ocean , and water  rapidly  gets deep; pay attention especially if you’re travelling with kids.

Despite rough waves the water is still bright and if you like sub or snorkeling there’s a lot to see (including nudists on the east side of the beach 😛 )

How to get to Playa del Papagayo, Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo

The three major beaches can easily be reached by car through stone roads that let you park a few meters from the beach.

But if you want to see some more interesting panoramas from the top, or your rental car insurance ( see here how to rent a car !) doesn’t cover stone roads, my advice is to park in town near the blue pin on the map  and walk through the wide walk path to Playa Mujeres: it lets you see the beach as in my picture above.

Quiet beaches: Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo

Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo, another two nice beaches in the south coast of Lanzarote,  are located near Playa Blanca town (it may sound confusing but Playa Blanca is not a beach but the name of the town).

View this post on Instagram Playa Dorada – Lanzarote – Spain ?? – ?? Playa Dorada è una delle spiagge del sud di Lanzarote, a forma di caletta, servita e riparata dalle onde. These two quiet beaches  share the common round shape that protects from the main waves .

Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo are then more suitable for children. There are services and water is quiet.

All around you can find bars and restaurants; they may be worth a try for a dinner at sunset while watching at the sun descending on the sea line.

How to get to Playa Dorada

You can park in front of “centro comercial Papagayo” , following the blue pin on my map.

At centro comercial Papagayo you’ll also find a couple bars and pubs open at night ; this is the most active place of south coast in the night.

This does not mean that you’ll find big party life here in Playa Blanca anyway: if you’re searching for some nightlife you should consider moving to  Puerto del Carmen , I’m going to write an article  soon   about nightlife topic.

And then, after relaxing on these cool beaches,  don’t forget to explore the rest of this incredible island,  the volcanoes, the white towns or the wonderful vineyards , that you can easily see while driving back to Puerto del Carmen with your car ! 🙂

8 Best Beaches in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Home | Travel | Europe | Spain | Canary Islands | Lanzarote | 8 Best Beaches in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

When traveling abroad, get a policy from one of the  best travel insurance companies . Y ou can get a  5% discount   on Heymondo , the only insurance that pays medical bills upfront for you, HERE!

Puerto del Carmen is one of the main tourist hubs in Lanzarote, and one of my favorite towns on the island. With nearly five miles of incredible beaches in Puerto del Carmen , you can easily spend the day sunbathing, practicing watersports, and admiring the lovely scenery.

Several of the best beaches in Puerto del Carmen are in an area known as Grandes Playas , which consists of a series of fine sand beaches. Even outside of this area, there are other small coves and picturesque beaches you can’t miss.

Some of these beaches are among the best places to visit in Puerto del Carmen and offer convenient services and facilities for a comfortable beach day. To help you choose which Puerto del Carmen beach to visit, I’ll share my top recommendations with details about each.

1. Playa Grande, the most famous beach in Puerto del Carmen

Playa Grande , also known as Playa Blanca, is one of the best beaches in Puerto del Carmen , and the most popular one. It stretches over half a mile along the touristic center of town, and while it’s an urban beach, it boasts a beautiful environment with golden sand and calm waters.

Playa Grande, playa grande puerto del carmen

In fact, Playa Grande is considered one of the best beaches in Lanzarote , and its proximity to the Avenida de las Playas promenade means you’ll be close to all kinds of shops, bars, and restaurants. Not only that, but the beach has all the necessary services you need for your vacation, including sunbeds, umbrella rentals, toilets, showers, parking, and accessible ramps.

This beach in Puerto del Carmen is a great place for families as well as those who love watersports and aquatic activities like jet skiing and parasailing. If you’d like to do the latter activity, I recommend this tour , which lets you soar up to 200 feet in the air for panoramic views of the coast.

2. Playa Chica, the best beach in Puerto del Carmen for diving

Playa Chica is next to Playa Grande, and it’s another top beach in Puerto del Carmen that you should check out. What makes Playa Chica stand out is its contrasting golden sand and turquoise waters as well as the marine biodiversity along its coast.

The beach is just 200 feet long, but it’s a lovely place to sunbathe and swim in the clear waters. You can even find lava flows along the coast, making this a one-of-a-kind environment you can’t miss. Also, even though it’s a smaller beach, there are modern services that will help you fully enjoy your stay.

Playa Chica, playa chica puerto del carmen lanzarote

Of course, the crown jewel of this lava beach in Puerto del Carmen is the seabed, so don’t miss the chance to explore this underwater world. We decided to try scuba diving at Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote , and it was an impressive experience!

There are several diving centers in the area, so I recommend a scuba diving tour like this one . You’ll get all the equipment and training you need to take a 40-minute dive through the colorful waters of Playa Chica.

3. Playa de los Pocillos, one of the most beautiful Puerto del Carmen beaches

Playa de los Pocillos is a little over half a mile long and owes its name to the nearby community of Los Pocillos . In addition to its golden sand, the changes in the tide create small holes along the coastline, and these natural pools are popular among small children.

This makes Playa de los Pocillos one of the best beaches in Puerto del Carmen for families since kids can safely wade in the shallow waters. Moreover, the entire beach is surrounded by pretty gardens and palm trees, creating a paradisiacal atmosphere.

Playa de los Pocillos, playa chica beach in puerto del carmen

Although this is a windy beach, the waters remain calm, so you can enjoy a nice swim during your visit. Further out from the coast, you may even see windsurfers and kite-surfers practicing on the water.

With its crystal clear sea, golden sand, and proximity to several restaurants and bars, this beach at Puerto del Carmen is a must-see. There are even lifeguards, lounge chairs, umbrella rentals, and restrooms, plus it’s easy to get to. From Puerto del Carmen’s town center, it’s a 15-minute drive or bus ride.

4. Playa Matagorda, a quiet beach in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

If you’re looking for a quiet beach at Puerto del Carmen , one of the best options is Playa Matagorda . With half a mile of fine sand and calm waters, it’s the ideal spot to rest, sunbathe, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance. While it’s a great place for chilling out, it’s a windy beach, so it’s popular with windsurfers.

Playa Matagorda, best beach in puerto del carmen

Playa Matagorda is connected to Guacimeta Beach , the last beach in Puerto del Carmen , so take advantage of your visit to walk around and see two tranquil beaches in one day.

Besides, getting to Playa Matagorda is easy since it only takes about 20 minutes to drive or take a bus from the city center.

5. Playa Pe ña Grande, the best Puerto del Carmen beach for families

Playa Peña Grande is another Puerto del Carmen beach that I recommend, especially for families with children. It’s a quiet beach that has all the services you need for a comfortable day on the beach.

Playa Peña Grande, playa grande puerto del carmen lanzarote

5. Playa Peña Grande, the best Puerto del Carmen beach for families

This small cove is only about 130 feet long, but it’s very beautiful thanks to its fine, golden sand and stone walls. Just a few feet away is the waterfront promenade and a garden area where you can have a picnic or let the little ones play.

Moreover, this is one of the beaches in Puerto del Carmen with sunbeds and other rentals, so you’ll have everything you need to relax on the Lanzarote coast. To get there, you can take public transportation or drive.

6. Playa Lima, a great beach in Puerto del Carmen for watersports

Playa Lima is another interesting beach in Puerto del Carmen right by Lanzarote Airport. Stretching about half a mile, its fine sand is the perfect spot to lay out a towel and watch the planes go by.

Playa Lima, beach at puerto del carmen

Despite its proximity to the airport, this is a quiet beach with few crowds, so you shouldn’t have any problems enjoying the calm waters. You may even see a plane flying overhead, just a few hundred feet above you.

Besides the planes, Playa Lima is a popular Puerto del Carmen beach for activities like windsurfing, so keep your eyes peeled for athletes practicing this sport in the distance. On land, there is a garden area, a playground, restrooms, and a parking lot, so you can drive here or take public transportation.

7. Los Fariones Beach, the first beach in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Hotel Fariones was the first resort to open in Puerto del Carmen and all of Lanzarote. Its opening sparked a tourist movement throughout the island, making Lanzarote and the Canary Islands a popular tourist destination.

Los Fariones Beach, puerto del carmen beach activities

Los Fariones Beach owes its name to this iconic hotel, although this Puerto del Carmen beach stands out on its own. It spans 200 feet and boasts calm, clear waters, golden sand, and a beautiful landscape. It’s also one of the quietest beaches in Puerto del Carmen despite being close to the town center.

Here, you’ll see the famous “ muellito ”, a small platform over the water that serves as a makeshift diving board. If you want to jump into the refreshing sea below, or just visit Los Fariones Beach, you must follow the signs along the old stone path. The route is a bit neglected and begins in Pila de la Barrilla , next to Playa Chica.

8. Playa El Barranquillo, another must-see beach in Puerto del Carmen

Finally, be sure to check out Playa El Barranquillo , a scenic and peaceful beach in Puerto del Carmen where you can escape from the crowded urban beaches near town. This beach has an extensive coastline stretching from Playa Grande to La Peñita Beach and contains several smaller coves.

Along with its fine golden sand and incredible natural environment, Playa El Barranquillo is close to shops, markets, and Avenida de las Playas, Puerto del Carmen’s commercial center. So, it gives you the best of both worlds: tranquility and seclusion as well as lively bars and restaurants.

Playa El Barranquillo, puerto del carmen to playa blanca

Personally, I think this is one of the best beaches in Puerto del Carmen because it’s naturally beautiful and often goes unnoticed by tourists. Here, you can see volcanic rock scattered in the sand, which adds a wild, rustic touch. One of my favorite parts of visiting this beach is watching the sunrise or sunset from the coast.

If you’re visiting with family, Playa El Barranquillo is a good option, although the sand can be rocky. There are restrooms and showers, but no lifeguards, so keep an eye on the kids.

Lanzarote is not just a land of volcanoes but also a land of natural pools, giant cliffs, breathtaking viewpoints, beaches with turquoise water and vineyards of unique beauty. This island is a real treasure. You will find out when you visit Lanzarote. For now, in this post I will show you which are the best places to see in Lanzarote.

After this huge list of the best things to do in Lanzarote, you will find a map where I have marked all these places on the island. You will also find some advice on where to stay in Lanzarote.

Table of contents

📝 MY LANZAROTE TRAVEL GUIDE .

Things to do in Lanzarote

Ready to find out that to see in Lanzarote? Let’s begin!

1. Go on a day trip to La Graciosa

how to go to la graciosa

If you are going to spend several days in Lanzarote, I recommend taking a trip to La Graciosa, located in the north of Lanzarote. It is the least inhabited island of the 8 populated islands in the Canary island chain. It only has 737 inhabitants. You can imagine how peaceful this island is!

To get to La Graciosa, first you have to go to Orzola port and take a ferry to Caleta de Sebo , one of the two urban centers of La Graciosa (the other is Pedro Barba). The ferry ticket costs €28. You can also go on an organized trip .

You can get more information on how to get to La Graciosa from Lanzarote here . Once you get there, you need to visit the Playa de la Cocina, Montaña Amarilla, Playa Francesa, Playa de las Conchas and Montaña Bermeja.

🛏️ You haven’t booked your hotel in Lanzarote yet? I recommend you the place we stayed at: Conylanza Golf and Mar Suites , an apartment located in a very quiet neighborhood in Costa Teguise. The place was spacious, clean and had a shared garden with a pool. We loved it!

2. Snorkeling in Caleton Blanco Beach

what to visit in lanzarote

If you want to swim in calm waters and enjoy a good day at the beach, you cannot miss Caletón Blanco. This white sand beach with turquoise waters is located in the north of the island,  2km from Órzola. There are natural pools that were formed by volcanic rocks. You’ll be able to snorkel and observe marine life. Visiting this beach is one of the best things to do in Lanzarote with children.

Next to the beach, there is a parking lot where you can park your car. You can easily drive to the beach. Of course, if you go during high season and don’t get up early, you will have to have some patience until you manage to park your car.

3. Visit Famara Beach and Caleta de Famara

Famara beach

One of the best things to do in Lanzarote is visiting Famara Beach. This beach left me speechless. It is not for less! This beach is more than 5 kilometers long with cliffs in the background. My recommendation is that you spend the last hours of the afternoon here and wait for the sun to set and enjoy an incredible sunset.

This pristine beach is ideal for taking long walks and cooling off with a swim, but it is also perfect for those who enjoy water sports. The wind and waves make this place excellent for surfing, windsurfing or kitesurfing. If you are interested in surf lessons, you can take a surf course in Famara . It is also common to see people paragliding.

Once you’ve visited Famara Beach, you should visit Caleta de Famara which is the town next to the beach. If decide to watch the sunset and visit Caleta de Famara, you will find many places to dine in town. We ate twice at La Mar Café. The place is very cool and the food is delicious. The only downside is that the service is a bit slow. If you are not in a hurry, it will not be a problem.

4. Risco de Famara Viewpoint (El Bosquecillo Park)

lanzarote canary islands

If you thought that Risco de Famara was beautiful from the beach, wait till you get on top of the cliff. The view is even more incredible when you visit the viewpoint. From the Risco de Famara viewpoint, 480 meters high, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the ocean and the coastline of Lanzarote.

This viewpoint is located in El Bosquecillo Park. You must drive on a dirt road but if you go slowly and carefully, you can get there with any car. Admission is completely free. I share the exact location of the parking and the exact location of the viewpoint .

5. Las Cabras Cave

best places to visit in Lanzarote

If you visit Risco de Famara viewpoint, you must visit Las Cabras Cave. Once you’re at the viewpoint, walk down along the edge of the cliff and you will get there in less than ten minutes. You will see a small plain at a lower pass with a strange rock where you can head down.

If you begin to go down, you will soon see a small hole in the cliff. You’ve arrived at Las Cabras Cave! You can find the exact location here .

6. Visit “Las Grietas”, famous volcanic crevasses in Lanzarote

things to do in lanzarote

A secret spot in Lanzarote is “Las Grietas”, which are cracks on the ground created by the Montaña Blanca volcano. You will be able to enter the crevasse and enjoy the silence and tranquility. To make it very easy for you to find the location of Las Grietas (Lanzarote), the exact coordinates are: 28 ° 58’24.9 ″ N 13 ° 38’09.4 ″ W. You can park your car right in front on a parking space next to the road.

🏥 Remember it is very important to purchase travel insurance for Spain if you don’t have medical coverage in this country. I always use and recommend the company Heymondo, where I can offer you a 5% discount on your travel insurance .

7. Los Charcones natural pools

los charcones lanzarote

There are many natural pools throughout the Canary Islands. One of the most beautiful natural pools in Lanzarote are known as “Los Charcones”, located in the southwest part of the island. In order to visit these pools, you will first have to go to Playa Blanca, which is one of the most popular towns in Lanzarote. I recommend visiting the natural pools when the tide is low.

Once in Playa Blanca, you have to go to an abandoned hotel located on the coast. To make it easier for you to find it, the exact coordinates are: 28 ° 53’27.9 ″ N 13 ° 52’24.3 ″ W. On the way to the natural pools, you’ll run into a section of the road that is unpaved. I advise you to go very slowly and very carefully. You will see the abandoned hotel right on the coast.

Once you’ve arrive at the hotel, you can leave your car there and go down the rocks to Los Charcones natural pools. There are several pools formed when the tide is low. You can choose the one you like the most and enjoy bathing in it. I went to the one that is right here: 28 ° 53’25.7 ″ N 13 ° 52’35.2 ″ W. By the way, when I was there there were a lot of sea urchins in the pools which made bathing somewhat complicated.

8. Papagayo Beach, one of the best places to visit in Lanzarote

Papagayo Beach

Playa del Papagayo is definitely one of the most beautiful and visited beaches in Lanzarote. Its turquoise waters, golden sand and the surrounding cliffs make this beach so enjoyable. This beach is one of the best places to snorkel in Lanzarote.

The beach is located in Los Ajaches Natural Monument. The access is not free. Admission costs €3 per vehicle until 6:00 p.m. After 6:00 p.m admission is free. The dirt road to the beach doesn’t have many potholes. There is a parking lot very close to the beach. You will also find a restaurant next to it.

The beach can get very crowded therefore, I advise you to go first thing in the morning or at sunset. If the sky is clear, you’ll be able to see Fuerteventura in the distance. Don’t forget to bring something to eat and water. You can also head up the cliff to the viewpoint in Playa del Papagayo.

Activities in Papagayo

In Playa Blanca you can go on a kayak and snorkel trip through Playa del Papagayo . It’s a 4-hour trip and costs €40 per person (€32 for children ages 8 to 12). The tour includes kayaking equipment, snorkeling equipment, a snack and a guide. It is a fun and different way to visit this beautiful beach.

If you’re seeking a relaxing plan, you can opt for a sailing tour around the beaches in the area . It costs €59 per person (€35 for children ages 3 to 11) and lasts 4 hours. The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a guide, boat ride between Puerto del Carmen and Papagayo Beach, welcome mojito and tortilla pincho, open bar, lunch, and equipment for water activities. Sounds like a great plan!

9. Spend an afternoon at Playa Mujeres Beach

teguise

If Playa del Papagayo is crowded, I recommend going to Playa Mujeres, also located in the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches. It is much larger (it measures 400 meters in length) and it’s less crowded. You’ll spend some relaxing time at this beach. The water is also very clear and has little waves. There is a parking lot right next to it.

You can also visit Playa del Pozo and Playa de la Cera.

10. Visit Timanfaya National Park

timanfaya

One of the best things to do in Lanzarote is visiting Timanfaya National Park. It’s a protected reserve home to 25 volcanoes. The landscape you’ll see is a result of volcanic eruptions throughout the years; 1720, 1736 and 1824.

As mentioned before, Timanfaya National Park is a protected reserve. Thus, visiting the national park without a guided tour is not possible. There is a bus tour that takes you in the national park. The bus ride is 30 minutes long and takes you up close to the “Fire Mountains”. During this visit you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful and colorful landscape inside the park.

The entrance to the National Park is located on route LZ-67. You’ll find a parking lot where you can leave your car. You’ll also find a restaurant and some information about geothermal energy. You can get on a bus tour right after the entrance.

Price: €12 (general admission), €6 (children ages 7 to 12). Office hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The last bus leaves at 4:00 p.m.

Important: If you are going to visit the Fire Mountains (Timanfaya) and other places, such as the Los Verdes Cave, the Jameos del Agua or the Cactus Garden, you may want to purchase one of the pases available to visit Lanzarote . The pass allows entry to 3, 4 or 6 places. You will save some money.

If you like to walk, there are two hiking trails through the park. The first, called the Tremesana Route, must be done with a guide and can be booked at the Mancha Blanca visitor center. The second, the Littoral Route, can be done on your own and runs along a path parallel to the coast.

Another option is to visit the Timanfaya National Park on an organized tour. On this website , you will be able to see different tours that include the bus tour to the Fire Mountains and visits to other places.

11. Go up to Caldera Blanca

cosas que ver en lanzarote

Outside of Timanfaya, there are volcanoes that you can visit. One of the main hiking routes in Lanzarote is the one that leads you to the crater of Caldera Blanca. The trail begins just outside the small town of Mancha Blanca. It takes about an hour to climb the crater. I recommend going early, as there is little space to leave your car.

12. Teguise, the most beautiful town to visit in Lanzarote

things to do in lanzarote

You must visit the little town of Teguise on your trip to Lanzarote. It is a town full of history and charm. Did you know that it is the ancient capital of Lanzarote from the 15th century until 1852 until Arrecife became the capital. Teguise has managed to maintain its beauty and splendor.

Strolling through the old town of Teguise is simply wonderful. Geting lost in its streets and discovering each of the beautiful corners in this little town is just amazing. You must visit Plaza de la Constitución and the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe de Teguise.

Every Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Teguise market is open. It is one of the most popular markets in the Canary Islands. In it you will find a great variety of handicrafts, ecological products, souvenirs, etc. If you are staying in Arrecife or Costa Teguise and do not have a vehicle, you can take a trip to the Teguise market on your own.

13. View from Rio Viewpoint in Lanzarote

things to do in Lanzarote

Visiting Rio Viewpoint is one of the best things to do in Lanzarote. It is located 400 meters above Risco de Famara, in the north of the island. Apart from having incredible views of the island of La Graciosa, this viewpoint is also very popular for being one of the most representative works of César Manríquez. This famous Lanzarote-born artist was known for integrating art with nature in a very harmonious way.

At this viewpoint you will find a cafeteria and a parking lot. You can also walk along the path next to the parking lot for a free view.

  • Price: €5 (general admission), €2.50 (children ages 7 to 12).
  • Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Activity included in the Lanzarote Pass .

14. Jameos del Agua

jameos del agua

Jameos del Agua was made by César Manríquez. This place is located inside a volcanic tunnel created by the eruptions of the Corona Volcano. Once again, the artist knew how to integrate nature with man made architecture to create a space full of beauty, harmony and peace. I recommend going first thing in the morning to be able to avoid a crowd.

  • Price: € 10 (general admission), €5 (children ages 7 to 12).
  • Hours: 10: 00 a.m – 18: 00 p.m. Last visit at 5:45 p.m.
  • Activity included in the Lanzarote pass .

15. Visit Los Verdes Cave

Los Verdes Cave

Los Verdes Cave is located in one of the longest volcanic tunnels in the world. The tunnel begins in the crater of the Corona Volcano and ends in the sea. In the past, this cave was used by locals in the area to hide from pirate attacks. In 1964 the place was conditioned to accommodate visitors Now tourists are able to enter the depths of Lanzarote with a guide.

  • Price: €10 (general admission), €5 (children ages 7 to 12).
  • Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. It is recommended to visit it at 3:00 p.m.

16. Visit La Corona Volcano, one of the best things to do in Lanzarote

things to do in Lanzarote

In the northern part of the island, in Haría, you’ll be able to visit La Corona Volcano. If you want to go up to the crater, which is 600 meters above sea level, you will first have to go to the small town of Yé, located on the skirts of the volcano. The climb is 45 minutes. I hope you enjoy the view!

18. Cactus Garden

Things to do in Lanzarote

On the outskirts Guatiza, you’ll be able to visit The Cactus Garden. It has a total of 4,500 cactuses of 450 different species. It is also a work of art of César Manriquez. There is a bar where you can enjoy local tapas surrounded by a beautiful landscape. In this very special garden you will also find one of the last remaining mills in Lanzarote.

  • Price: €6.5 (general admission), €3.25 (children ages 7 to 12).

18. Visit Cuervo Volcano, one of the best things to do in Lanzarote

volcan el cuervo

One of the best things to do in Lanzarote for the whole family is visiting the Cuervo Volcano. This volcano is located between the Timanfaya National Park, the Red Mountain and the Black Mountain. Once you leave the car in the small parking lot next to the road, you just have to follow the path that leads you to the volcano. It is a 5km circular route. There is also a path that takes you inside the caldera.

19. El Golfo Town

El Golfo is a fishing village worth visiting in Lanzarote. Not only because it is next to one of the most beautiful places to see in Lanzarote, the Charco de los Clicos, but also because it has a wide variety of restaurants where you can eat with beautiful views of the sea. We ate very well at the Casa Torano Restaurant. I recommend it!

20. Charco de los Clicos (Green Lake)

charco de los clicos

We arrive at another of the great essentials of Lanzarote, the Charco de los Clicos, located next to the small town El Golfo, on the southwest coast of the island. This lagoon is popular not only for its beautiful surroundings, but also for the intense green color of its waters, coming from the algae that inhabit the bottom.

The green color creates an incredible contrast with the black sand of the beach, the blue of the ocean and the yellow and red tones of the surrounding mountains. It is one of those places that seem taken from another planet. You will have the best view from the viewpoint, which is accessed by a small path that leaves the parking lot.

21. Bermeja Mountain beach, a wild beach in Lanzarote

que ver en lanzarote

I really like Bermeja Mountain beach. If you want to visit a beautiful beach that looks like something out of a science fiction movie, I recommend this place. It is made of sand and black stones. It has a green lake and is sheltered by a red mountain. This beach is ideal to relax and connect with nature.

22. Los Hervideros

los hervideros

Los Hervidores is one of the best places to visit in Lanzarote. If you head south after visiting Bermeja Mountain Beach you’ll arrive at Los Hervidores. You can observe how the waves crash against the rocks and create large columns. Admission is free.

23. Janubio Beach

Janubio Beach is one of the most beautiful black-sand beaches in Lanzarote. It is a beautiful beach to visit; however, due to its strong current, it is not a great place to go for a swim. It not a touristic place therefore, you’ll be able to enjoy some peace and tranquility at Janubio Beach.

24. Janubio Salt Flats

places to visit in Lanzarote

These salt flats are located right next to Janubio Beach. They are the largest salt flats in the Canary Islands. If you’ve never visited salt flats in the past, I recommend visiting Janubio Salt Flats and enjoying the landscape. You should visit the slat flats during sunset. You can book a guided tour of the salt flats and also purchase salt.

25. Lagomar Museum

If you enjoy visiting museums, Lagomar Museum is definitely a place you don’t want to visit during your trip to Lanzarote. The museum was designed by Jesus Soto and Cesar Manrique. It is located in the district of Nazaret and is built on a volcanic quarry formed by natural caves, rocks and tunnels. One of the owners of the house was Omar Sharif who is an Egyptian actor. Inside, you will find exhibitions of emerging artists from the island, a restaurant and a bar.

  • Price: €6 (general admission).
  • Hours: 10: 00 a.m – 18: 00 p.m.

26. Climb Black Mountain, one of the best things to do in Lanzarote

hike in lanzarote

One of the things to do in Lanzarote is to climbing Black Mountain. The you arrive at the top you can enjoy a panoramic view of the landscape. One of the most beautiful landscapes you will see up there will of Cuervo Volcano. You will also have a very beautiful view of Red Mountain.

This mountain is located next to the LZ-56 road. There is a small parking lot where you can leave your car and start walking. There are several trails to climb to the top. On of which is straight and steep one, where it is very difficult to climb, and others that zigzags. It takes about 40 minutes to the top.

27. Bodega La Geria, must-see in Lanzarote

bodega la geria

One of the best things to do in Lanzarote is visiting Bodega la Geria. You’ll be amazed by this unique way of cultivating grapes. Large holes are made on the ground and rocks are places around it. In the middles of the hole, grapes are planted. These holes are dug in a perfect pattern on volcanic land. These holes create quite a landscape as you can see in the photo above.

We decided to enter the vineyards. The exact location is: 28°58’16.4″N 13°42’43.9″W. You’ll also be able to taste wine in the nearby shop. There are also guided tours available.

28. Antigua Rofera, a unique place in Lanzarote

antigua rofera

Bodega la Geria isn’t the only strange and unique place in Lanzarote. When you visit Antigua Rofera, you’ll feel like you’re at a set of a sci-fi movie. In the roferas “rofe” is extracted, which is another word for volcanic sand with large and rough grains. Rofe is used as a top layer in agriculture. If you approach this abandoned “rofera”, you will be able to walk between very unique volcanic shapes.

The exact location: 29 ° 03’26.6 ″ N 13 ° 30’19.1 ″ W.

29. Do a discovery dive in Lanzarote

Never went diving? You should consider giving it a try in Lanzarote. I tried it for the first time a few months ago and it was an incredible experience. If you want to get to know the underwater world, you can book your discovery dive here .

You can book one dive (€75) or two dives (€115). If you have time, I recommend booking two dives because, the first one you may be a little nervous. You’ll definitely be more comfortable on the second drive. Don’t forget your underwater camera!

This activity includes hotel pickup and drop-off, theory and practical class, english-speaking instructor, all diving equipment and insurance.

30. Haría, a charming town in Lanzarote

haria lanzarote

Visiting Haría is one the best things to do in Lanzarote. It is located in the north of the island in an area known as the “Valley of the Thousand Palms”, since there is a microclimate that allows its lands to be the greenest on the island.

Do not forget to take a walk losing yourself through its streets, visit a local store and have a drink on one of its terraces. Don’t miss the Plaza de León y Castillo and the César Manrique House Museum.

  • César Manrique House Museum Price: €10 (general admission), €1 (children up to 12 years old).
  • Hours of Operation: 10:30 am – 3:00 pm.

31. Visit Cesar Manrique Foundation

If you like the work artist César Manrique and are interested in knowing more about it, you may want to visit the César Manrique Foundation, located on a lava flow in Tahiche. The foundation is in a house Cesar Manrique lived for 20 years, from 1968 to 1988.

One of the more interesting spaces in the house is Manrique’s old studio, where some of his paintings are exhibited. The garden is also beautiful.

  • Price: €8 (general admission), €1 (children up to 12 years old).
  • Hours: 10: 00h – 15: 00h.
  • If you are also going to visit the César Manrique House Museum, you can buy a combined ticket for € 15.

32. Jabillo Beach (Teguise Coast)

teguise coast

Some of the best restaurants in Lanzarote are in Teguise Coast. However, what I liked the most about this part of the island was snorkeling at El Jablillo Beach. The water was incredibly clear! It is a small beach (350 meters long) with white sand and turquoise waters. It is easily accessible, so there are usually a lot of people, especially families. I recommend going early or late in the day.

33. Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote

things to do in Lanzarote

It is not a touristic place in Lanzarote. However, if you are in the area at sunset time, I recommend taking a walk through the Charco de San Ginés. Here the sea water enters the city creating one of the most beautiful postcards of Arrecife.

Around the pond, you will find numerous restaurants with terraces where you can sit down to enjoy a pleasant evening while trying some of the typical dishes. Be sure to try the famous potatoes with mojo.

34. Take a stroll through Arrieta

I recommend visiting Arrieta which is a small town in the north coast of Lanzarote. One of the main attractions of Arrieta is Playa de la Garita, quite popular amongst those who love to surf.

Another reason why some travelers visit Arrieta is because it is very peaceful. Unlike other towns on the island, Arrieta is very quiet. If you want to enjoy a very quiet bath, do not forget to bathe in El Charcón.

35. Cueva del Agua natural pool

things to do in Lanzarote

Cueva del Agua is another natural pool worth visiting. It is located between Charco del Palo and the Los Cocoteros neighborhood, in a fairly isolated area. It’s somewhat complicated to get to Cueva del Agua natural pool. It is a positive thing, since you will find few people in the pool. From Guatiza, you have to take a dirt road that takes you to a lonely house. Here you can leave the car. Then you walk a bit north, past the house.

Unlike other pools, you have to visit this pool during high tide. There is a cave through which the sea water enters and, if the tide is low, it enters with more force. Also, when the tide is high, you can jump into the pool, as it is deep enough. If you are going to go, I recommend wearing flip-flops.

  • Exact location: 29°04’12.3″N 13°27’24.1″W.

36. Walk around Montaña Colorada, a great thing to do in Lanzarote

places to see in Lanzarote

If you want to walk between volcanoes but do not want to have to climb a lot, I recommend taking the circular route that surrounds Red Mountain. As you can imagine based on its name, this mountain stands out for the reddish color of its slopes. It is a very simple route, suitable for the whole family. Along the way you will find different information panels about the different volcanoes in the area. It is very interesting.

37. Diving in Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote

Did you know that in Lanzarote there is an underwater museum? It also caught my attention when I discovered it! It is the only underwater museum in Europe. You can dive among the sculptures created by Jason deCaires Taylor , who also created a museum of this type in Granada (country) and Cancun (Mexico). If you are interested, you can book a diving trip in advance to the Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote .

38. Charco del Palo Natural Pool

Charco del Palo Natural Pool is ideal if you like to feel free and wild in nature. This pool is located in Charco del Palo, a nudist area in Lanzarote. As you can imagine, everyone who visits this place is completely naked. If you want to feel the rays of the sun in every corner of your body, this is the place for you. This neighborhood is located in Mala, in the northeast of the island. The pools are very easy to access.

39. Pools of Punta Mujeres

Some of the most popular pools are in Punta Mujeres, a charming town located in the northeast of Lanzarote. In Punta Mujeres you will find several natural pools, some of them well protected from the sea, which make them ideal for children. If you want to enjoy the sun, the sea and village life, you cannot miss this beautiful corner of the island.

40. Playa Blanca, in the south of Lanzarote

playa blanca

Playa Blanca is one of the best places to visit in Lanzarote. There are many beautiful beaches nearby like Papagayo Beach. Unlike other towns, Playa Blanca has a more relaxed atmosphere. After visiting the beaches of Los Ajaches Natural Monument, you can stop for dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.

In Playa Blanca you can go parasailing , get on a jet ski or water bike tour .

You can also go on an organized day trip to Fuerteventura from Playa Blanca. If you are also visiting this island, have a look at my post on the best things to do in Fuerteventura .

things to do in Lanzarote

Other places to see in Lanzarote: Casa del Campesino Museum, Casa José Saramago, Honda Beach, Bodegas El Grifo, Caleta del Mojón Blanco and the inclined palm tree of Lanzarote, located at the base of Black Mountain (update: the palm tree was cut off).

Where to stay in Lanzarote

where to stay in Lanzarote

One of the main concerns people have when planning a trip to this island is figuring out where to stay in Lanzarote . There are many towns on the island that are great options. Your decision will depend on whether you are going to visit the entire island, if you are going to spend every night in the same place, if you prefer a quieter or more lively place, etc.

Lanzarote is not a very large island, therefore, it is not necessary to stay in different places. You can choose a town and visit all of Lanzarote staying in one place.

We stayed in Costa Teguise and visited every corner on the island. We chose this coastal town because it is in a more or less central location and very close to the highway that crosses the island from north to south. It is also on the coast and has many places to eat.

We stayed at Conylanza Golf and Mar Suites which are apartments located in a very quiet neighborhood in Costa Teguise. The apartment was spacious, bright, clean and had a terrace overlooking the sea. There was also a common garden with a pool. It had no private parking but on the street there is a lot of space to park. I highly recommend it!

Best towns to stay in Lanzarote:

  • Hotels in Costa Teguise .
  • Hotels in Playa Blanca .
  • Hotels in Caleta de Famara .
  • Hotels in Haría .
  • Hotels in Arrieta .

Map of places to visit in Lanzarote

On the following map, I have marked all the places to visit in Lanzarote mentioned in this article:

If you are visiting other parts of this beautiful country, check my Spain travel guide .

I hope this post about the best things to do in Lanzarote has been very useful and informative and has helped you organize your visit to this charming island. If you have more questions or want to tell me about your trip to the Canary Islands, you can leave a comment or write me an email. Until next time, travelers!

  • PLAN A TRIP STEP BY STEP

↠ Book free tours and guided visits on Civitatis or GetYourGuide . I always use these platforms to check what organized activities there are at my destination.

↠ To pay with card in foreign currency or withdraw money from ATMs, I always use this card (there are free and paid plans). It works the best!

↠ Traveling with travel insurance to a destination where you don’t have healthcare coverage is a must. Get your insurance 5% cheaper with this link .

↠ If you want to have cellphone data at your destination from the moment you land and don’t want to waste time, there is nothing like this eSIM . Use the code “comeamaviaja” for a 5% discount.

↠ Check out Booking’s offers , a platform I always use, as I always find very good options thanks to its search engine with filters.

↠ For destinations where I need to rent a car, I always check Discover Cars and Auto Europe search engines. I recommend them!

↠ If you still need to buy flights for your trip, there is no better search engine than Skyscanner (although I always recommend booking the flight on the company’s website).

6) and 21) are not allowed to do. I know some people do this regulary, but I guess its not a good idea to recommend it.

Hello, Sabrins. It was totally fine to visit both of the places you mention when I visited the island in 2021. I am not sure if anything has changed…

The top 7 beaches in the Azores

Sandra Henriques

Apr 24, 2024 • 5 min read

best beaches to visit lanzarote

Follow the locals to their favourite swim spots on São Miguel island © Brandon Rosenblum / Getty Images

The beaches of the Azores have it all. On some islands you'll find ocean pools naturally carved in the rugged coast or perhaps soft black-sand beaches. Sometimes the best spot recommended by locals has a mix of both.

For travelers used to hotter weather it will always feel like it's never quite warm enough to swim in the Azores, but it just takes some getting used to. Beach-going weather in the summer can last a whole month; however, expect that to be interspersed with showers that turn up humidity levels up to 90%.

The one thing that can dampen your beach plans for the day: finding a large patch of jellyfish in the ocean or washing over the sand — the Portuguese man-of-wars are particularly dangerous and are being spotted more frequently every year. Make sure you keep an eye on local conditions as you explore these top beaches in the Azores.

1. Carapacho

Best beach for wellness

Protected from the ocean by a nature-made low wall of rocks, the calm turquoise waters of the swimming pool in Carapacho on Graciosa Island keep at a welcoming temperature practically all year long — unless, of course, the currents are too strong for a safe swim.

This village in the southeast is more popular during the thermal season, typically from May to September, but most visitors head to Termas do Carapacho just steps away. It is believed that the water in the thermal baths and natural pool has healing properties.

2. Fajã Grande

Best beach for sunsets

Fajã Grande on the west coast of Flores Island is a locals’ favourite summer destination, with many having a second home there to spend the weekends. The beach is a small patch of black sand wedged between the old port and the cliffs, close to restaurants, cafes, picnic areas and a free parking lot. For younger kids who haven’t learned how to swim yet, there’s a shallow pool near the beach restaurant where they can splash around.

Local tip:  More than the balmy and sunny summer weather, people stay here from morning to night to see the sunset on Europe’s westernmost island.

3. Praia dos Mosteiros

Most popular beach

About 30km from Ponta Delgada and popular with locals, Praia dos Mosteiros on São Miguel’s west coast gets busy on the weekends during peak season – onsite facilities, a bus stop within walking distance and free parking only steps from the stretch of sand make it the perfect spot for a full day on the beach.

Local tip: For experienced surfers (waves break into the rocks here), this is one of the best spots on the island to catch some waves.

4. Praia Grande

Best city beach

It’s one of the largest beaches in the Azores and one of the most popular swimming spots on Terceira Island. Praia Grande sits right below Praia da Vitória’s seaside avenue in the historic centre. When the weather isn't favourable for lounging at the beach, plenty of people go there for exercising and oceanside walks.

With fewer currents and warmer waters than elsewhere on the island, expect this city beach to be more crowded in the summer.

Planning tip: If you have a stopover of at least four hours in Terceira, grab a cab, head to Praia Grande for a quick dip, or a stroll past the street art murals, and return to the airport in time for your flight – the city of Praia da Vitória is less than 5km away.

Vila Nova do Corvo, Corvo Island, Azores, Portugal: red roofs of the island's main settlement seen from the hills - view over the town with the volcanic rock beach, boats docked in the harbor's pier

5. Praia da Areia

Best beach for swimming

The smallest island in the archipelago has only one sand beach, aptly named Praia da Areia. Compared to other islands, here, the stretch of coarse black rock reaches far into the ocean, so you can ease into the water without feeling that sudden loss of ground beneath your feet. And the water here is warmer than elsewhere in the archipelago.

Like everything else on Corvo Island, the beach is within walking distance from the town centre (roughly 700m) and right at the end of the airport's runway – the one to two daily flights hardly ruin the beach going experience.

AdobeStock288389778-RFC.jpeg

6. Poça Simão Dias

Best pool for the views

Poça Simão Dias, the most popular natural swimming pool in São Jorge, attracts locals and tourists despite the short but rugged rock path you need to walk to get there. Most come to photograph the clear turquoise waters contrasting with the black basalt coast and the vegetation-covered hills – if this is your plan, come in the morning before the swimming sun-seeking crowds arrive. The pointy rocks around the pool have very few spots to lay a towel and provide zero chances of lounging comfortably to sunbathe, which makes Poça Simão Dias a better spot for quick dips and snorkelling.

Planning tip:  Afternoons are always best for swimming when the sun starts peeking out from behind the cliff and warming up the water.

Wide angle view of Porto Pim brown sand beach, Faial Island in the Azores

7. Praia de Porto Pim

Best beach for families

Protected by the Monte da Guia hill and an old defence wall, and a short drive from the centre of Horta, Praia de Porto Pim is a favourite among families on Faial Island. Its calm waters and proximity to cafes and restaurants make it a popular spot even outside the beach season.

Local tip: In 2019, Hurricane Lorenzo left quite a trail of destruction across this small stretch of sand, but the beach has been slowly returning to its former Blue Flag state.
