Banff National Park, with forested mountainside and snowy peaks in background

Banff National Park encompasses more than 2,500 square miles of land.

Known for everything from polar bears to poutine, Canada is a destination that can’t possibly be covered in one trip. Not that you’d want to try, anyways—it’s the second-largest country in the world in terms of land area, so exploring each of its 10 provinces and 3 territories is no easy task.

If you’re looking for some destinations to kick off your journey in the Great White North, here are 12 places to visit in Canada that showcase the sheer diversity of the country. There’s plenty for the outdoor adventurist and city explorer—and everyone in between.

1. Banff National Park, Alberta

  • Come for: an experience that captures the best of Canada’s nature
  • Stay at: Fairmont Banff Springs

“Banff National Park changes with the seasons and is a natural playground all year round,” AFAR contributor Juliette Recompsat writes in her guide for first-timer’s at this Canadian Rockies destination . In summer, people flock here for alpine flower blooms and glacier-fed lakes. Winter, while much quieter, offers its own set of experiences showcasing the park’s beauty: Try a guided ice walk in Johnston Canyon or snow tubing at Mount Norquay and Lake Louise ski resorts, for starters.

While travelers could easily spend a week in Banff, don’t miss the chance to visit neighboring Jasper National Park , the country’s largest at 4,200 square miles, which is brimming with iconic outdoor sights like Spirit Island, one of the most-photographed spots in Canada.

2. Whistler, British Columbia

  • Come for: a ski experience in a league of its own
  • Stay at: Four Seasons Whistler

Located in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Whistler is home to the largest ski resort in North America. Every winter, Epic Pass holders and casual skiers alike descend the slopes of the Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. While the more than 8,000-acre Whistler Blackcomb Resort is one of the country’s best ski resorts —with options ranging from incredibly difficult to magic-carpet easy—a love of winter sports isn’t necessary to enjoy the town.

Head to Whistler Village to enjoy what several AFAR contributors consider to be the “ laid-back, beer-fueled, and decidedly unfussy ” après-ski experience that is characteristically Canadian. Here, it’s definitely possible to enjoy a diversity of activities that don’t require skis or snowboards : Learn about First Nations culture at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre , take a break at the Scandinave Spa Whistler , or even try an escape room at Escape! Whistler .

3. Prince Edward Island

  • Come for: slow living and sparkling harbors
  • Stay at: Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites

This island is one of AFAR’s best places to travel in 2023 , in part because of its gorgeous, pastoral scenery—this was the setting of the beloved 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables , after all. Canada’s smallest province debuted its 435-mile Island Walk trail in 2022, allowing cyclists and walkers to circumnavigate the entire island.

Along the way, travelers can explore the preserved houses of Charlottetown or try some of the island’s famed oysters and lobster at Victoria-by-the-Sea. AFAR contributor Michael Kaminer suggests stopping at the small town of Kensington, where travelers can tour a historic railway station and then treat themselves to Mars bars and bacon sundaes at Frosty Treat Dairy Bar afterwards.

4. Halifax, Nova Scotia

  • Come for: a maritime city in touch with its whimsical side
  • Stay at: The Muir Hotel

Known for its maritime history, this city of 430,000 has been transforming over the past quarter century to a more artistic and inviting place. For AFAR contributor Darcy Rhyno, the city’s revitalization is best represented by the so-called Drunken Lampposts, a trio of playfully bent and twisted streetlamps on the waterfront that were installed as temporary public artworks and have since gone permanent.

While the port city’s role in recovering the Titanic survivors can be explored in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic , Halifax also offers plenty of other activities for travelers . Go on the Good Cheer Trail to explore some of its breweries and cideries, visit the Canadian Museum of Immigration , and spend time on the waterfront for shopping and an array of public art displays that include a wave sculpture.

5. Fundy National Park, New Brunswick

  • Come for: natural thrills via high tides
  • Stay at: Beach Street Inn

Butting against the border of Maine, New Brunswick consists of nearly 1,400 miles of coastline . One jaw-dropping coastline travelers can visit is the one within Fundy National Park , home to the highest tides in the world. (They can reach around 50 feet here.) One of the most thrilling ways to experience its natural phenomenon is to go tidal bore rafting . This activity takes participants down a river toward the incoming ocean, making for a very bumpy ride. But there’s plenty more adventuring to do here , including whale-watching and admiring the views of the 10-mile Fundy Trail Parkway .

6. Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

  • Come for: a calm alternative to Niagara Falls
  • Stay at: 124 on Queen Hotel & Spa

Niagara Falls is a common destination for international travelers and bachelorette parties alike. For a vacation spot a little less busy, AFAR contributor Heather Greenwood Davis suggests driving 30 minutes north to Niagara-on-the-Lake , a 19th-century village that she calls “a more mature experience to the gaming hot spots and neon nightlife of the ever-popular honeymoon capital.”

Here, plenty of wineries and boutiques compete for spots on the itinerary, but one can’t-miss event is the Shaw Festival , which draws theater enthusiasts from around the world with its celebrated productions—they run the gamut from George Bernard Shaw classics to musicals, like this season’s Gypsy and Brigadoon .

Building with green dome among trees.

The city’s many churches—as well as its abbeys, monasteries, and seminaries—are testament to the long influence of the Church in Quebec and Montreal.

7. Montreal, Quebec

  • Come for: a European-esque escape
  • Stay at: Fairmont Le Queen Elizabeth

Tap into Canada’s French colonial history and bilingual present in this culture-filled city , which fuses a laid-back Old World European lifestyle with forward-thinking Canadian art and design. Here, you can stroll down Old Montreal’s Rue Saint-Paul , which was constructed along the Saint-Charles River in 1861 , or see an intimate show at the Théâtre Corona .

No matter when you visit, you’re sure to find something on the city’s jam-packed events calendar, which includes the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Just for Laughs comedy festival in the summer and Igloofest and Luminothérapie in the winter.

The archipelago of Haida Gwaii can be reached by boat from Vancouver.

8. Haida Gwaii, British Columbia

  • Come for: an Indigenous perspective on nature and art
  • Stay at: Haida House

About 50 miles from the southern tip of Alaska, this archipelago off the coast of British Columbia is the ancestral homeland and current territory of the Haida people. Upon its shores, AFAR editor Tim Chester describes a landscape where “the understory thrives and dampness reigns, shades of spongy green and yellow undulate, branch stumps sport mossy boxing gloves, and plant life drapes everywhere.”

Equally as impressive are the massive poles erected on these islands, which past and current generations of Haida have fashioned out of cedar. For those who have the chance to take the Haida Pledge and tour the archipelago, the Haida Heritage Centre is a fine starting place to learn about Haida specialties such as woodcarving.

9. Toronto, Ontario

  • Come for: a taste of Canadian culture in all of its diversity
  • Stay at: 1 Hotel Toronto

It’s easy to justify a visit to Toronto with plenty of showstopping sights like the CN Tower and St. Lawrence Market. As Canada’s largest city, it is also incredibly diverse—more than 140 languages are spoken here.

Time in Toronto reveals that it’s a city organized as a cluster of neighborhoods, where one street may be a center of the Jamaican diaspora , while another may be home to the city’s Little Portugal. No matter where travelers go, there’s plenty to be found in its underrated spaces , whether it be a walk through its Graffiti Alley or Allan Gardens Conservatory. With so much diversity on offer, dedicating a weekend to eating through the city’s dishes—whether in a hole-in-the-wall or Michelin-starred restaurant —is a no-brainer.

10. Vancouver, British Columbia

  • Come for: a cinematic city experience
  • Stay at: Skwachàys Lodge

Many people have seen Vancouver as the backdrop of movies like Deadpool and Godzilla , but this Canadian city is filled with outdoor adventures, cultural excursions, and culinary pursuits worth exploring off screen. Walking down the streets of Gastown and dining in Chinatown will give a good overview for weekend visitors . Those wanting to go a bit deeper should consider a jaunt to the Mount Pleasant neighborhood , a Vancouverite haven two miles from downtown.

Nature lovers will enjoy 1,000-acre Stanley Park, one of Vancouver’s most popular attractions. It features historic and contemporary First Nations totem poles throughout the park. (AFAR contributor Bianca Bujan recommends learning about them with Indigenous-owned Talaysay Tours. )

Ottawa, Ontario has a population of just over one million and is home to Parliament Hill.

11. Ottawa, Ontario

  • Come for: stately landmarks and ice skating on the canal
  • Stay at: Fairmont Château Laurier

“When you visit Canada’s capital, you get two cities for the price of one,” AFAR contributor Laura Byrne Paquet writes in her weekend getaway guide to Ottawa . The commercial hub—its name comes from the Algonquin word meaning “to trade”—sits on one side of the Ottawa River, but it’s just a 15-minute drive north to the Quebec city of Gatineau, which offers an introduction to Canada’s French-speaking side.

Landmarks like Parliament Hill and the National Gallery of Canada are some of the draws in the capital, as is the Rideau Canal, which connects the Ottawa River and Lake Ontario and was the main reason the city developed in the first place. During the wintertime, the Rideau turns into the world’s largest ice skating rink, making it a big attraction during the city’s annual Winterlude festival . For those who would rather visit during warmer months, the capital is also home to plenty of Canada Day festivities when July 1 rolls around.

12. Kelowna, British Columbia

  • Come for: a destination where fun and accessibility come hand-in-hand
  • Stay at: Hyatt Place Kelowna

This British Columbia city on Okanagan Lake doesn’t get as much press as its bigger urban peers, but that’s why it remains one of the country’s best-kept secrets . Thanks to more than 40 wineries in the area, wine is a big draw in these parts, and chef Rod Butters, of RauDZ Regional Table and micro bar, recommends visiting Kelowna Farmers’ Market so you can “learn who produces the finest heirloom tomatoes, peppers, and winter squash, who makes the best homemade preserves, and where to find the chewiest cheesy pretzels.”

Another plus for Kelowna is its accessibility. In AFAR contributor Lisa Kadane’s experience living in the city, the city’s focus on improving accessibility—whether it be in the form of wheelchair-friendly vans from companies like Uncorked Okanagan Wine Tours or accessible washrooms along the Okanagan Rail Trail —has made it easier for multi-gen families, seniors, and those with disabilities to enjoy the city.

16 Best Cities to Visit in Canada

' src=

Canada is a very unique country. It is vast — the second largest country in size in the world. Yet it is very sparsely populated. Its cities range from large, cosmopolitan cities like Toronto in Ontario to small outposts such as Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon Territory.

Many of the best cities to visit in Canada are gateways to magnificent wilderness areas and exciting recreational facilities, including some of the best ski resorts in the world.

16. Whitehorse

Whitehorse

This small city is the capital of the Yukon. It is also its only city. Situated on the banks of the Yukon River, Whitehorse is a great jumping-off point for those who want to explore Canada’s vast wilderness, especially since the two main highways in the territory — the Alaska and the Klondike — intersect in this small city.

While in Whitehorse, make sure to check out the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where you can see some of the many creatures that are native to the area, including caribou and Dall’s sheep.

Regina

Regina, which is the capital of Saskatchewan, prides itself on its dedication to the fine arts. It is home to the Mackenzie Art Gallery, which has a collection of more than 4,000 pieces of art, and also to the Regina Symphony Orchestra, the oldest continuously performing orchestra in the country.

Regina also plays hosts to numerous festivals and events throughout the year, including its Queen City Pride. Regina also boasts a natural history museum and a science museum.

14. Toronto

Toronto

If you enjoy visiting exciting and vibrant cities, you’ll love Toronto , which is also Canada’s largest city and the capital of Ontario. It is also a very cosmopolitan one, where more than 140 languages are spoken.

It is, in fact, the most multi-culturally diverse city on the planet. Currently, Toronto is undergoing an urban revitalization, so you’re likely to find many new and rising out of former industrial areas. Plus, you’ll never be bored in Toronto as it attracts numerous big events, including the well-known Toronto International Film Festival. While in Toronto, make sure to check out one of Canada’s most iconic landmarks, the CN Tower, currently the 3rd tallest tower in the world.

13. Victoria

Victoria BC

The capital of British Columbia is one of Canada’s most picturesque cities, with mountain or ocean vistas visible throughout many of its neighborhoods. Located on Vancouver Island, it is also a city that still boasts a wild side — elephant seals and whales can be found in the waters surrounding the city.

While in Victoria , make sure to check out its scenic Inner Harbour. Here, you will find numerous places to eat, and it is also a wonderful place to enjoy a cup of afternoon tea, a throwback to Victoria’s British heritage. Also adding to the city’s very British feel are double-decker buses and many horse-drawn carriages.

12. Calgary

Calgary

Located in Alberta, this city is famous for its western flavor and, most notably, for its world-famous Calgary Stampede, a huge ten-day rodeo that bills itself as the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. Calgary , which is Alberta’s biggest city, is also considered a gateway to the Rocky Mountains and is often the jumping-off start for adventures to two of Canada’s most famous parks, Banff and Jasper.

While in Calgary, take time to visit the Heritage Park Historical Village, Canada’s largest living history museum where you can experience what life was like in the area between the 1860s and the 1950s. Another interesting site that is located approximately 90 minutes south of Calgary is the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, an archaeological site where Native Americans hunted buffalo by stampeding them over a cliff.

Parliament of Canada

Ottawa, which is located in Ontario, is the capital of Canada and so — not surprisingly — it is blessed with numerous attractions, including the Parliament buildings and many world-class museums.

One of Ottawa’s most popular tourist attractions is its Rideau Canal. In the summer, the Rideau Canal is popular with boaters and in the winter, it becomes one of the largest outdoor skating rinks in the world. Outdoor activities, such as hiking and white water rafting on the Ottawa River, are very popular in this city.

10. Edmonton

Edmonton

The capital of Alberta is located way up north, which means during the summer, it enjoys very long days of sunshine. Edmonton is also a bit of a quirky city. It is, for example, home to the world’s first UFO landing strip. Edmonton is also home to more traditional sites , including Fort Edmonton Park, a living history museum that explores the history of the area from 1759 to the 1920s.

And for wildlife lovers, there is Elk Island National Park, a refuge for bison and elk, that is located within easy driving distance from Edmonton.

9. Saskatoon

Saskatoon

If you love the outdoors, Saskatoon has a lot to offer you, including several provincial parks and the Beaver Creek Conservation area, one of the few remaining short grass prairie sites left in the province.

A favorite activity for visitors and residents, alike, is a riverboat ride down the South Saskatchewan River through the Meewasin Valley. Love art? Then check out the Mendel Art Gallery, which houses many significant works of art and is the 16th largest public art gallery in Canada. Saskatoon is also the home of the University of Saskatchewan and the largest city in the province of Saskatchewan.

8. St. John’s

St. John's

St. John’s has two big claims to fame. One, it is the oldest city in North America and, two, it is the most easterly point in North America. But St. John’s, which is located in Newfoundland and Labrador, is also one of the best places to visit in Canada for many other reasons. For example, the waters off of its coast are home to a large population of whales, including minke, humpbacks and blue whales.

While in St. John’s, make sure to check out its charming Quidi Vidi neighborhood, which was once a historic fishing village.

7. Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, the city, is not just a great place to stay while visiting one of the most beautiful waterfalls in North America. It is also a fun place to visit. You’ll find numerous attractions for adults, including casinos and wineries, and plenty for kids to enjoy, including an indoor waterpark, the Guinness World Records Museum and several mini-golf courses. And, of course, there are the stunning falls, which you can see aboard a boat or fly over in a helicopter.

Halifax

If you’re searching for a city that understands fun, then you’ll want to visit Halifax , which is located in Nova Scotia. This city has more pubs and clubs per capital than just about any other city in Canada.

But the city isn’t just about drinking. It is also home to several interesting attractions, including Fisherman’s Cove, a 200-year-old restored fishing village, and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Halifax is also close to the Bay of Fundy, which is considered one of the seven natural wonders of North America and boasts the highest tides on earth.

London

Just like its namesake in England, Ontario’s London is also located on the Thames River. One of the best ways to discover what London has to offer is by hopping aboard a double-decker that will take you on a two-hour tour of the city’s historical sites and museums.

While in London, consider checking out the Fanshawe Pioneer Village. This is an open air museum that will show you what life was like in the area between the years 1820 and 1920, as well as the development of the City of London, which was founded in 1826.

4. Winnipeg

Winnipeg

Winnipeg, which is the capital of Manitoba, is a very multicultural city, where more than 100 different languages are spoken. It is also the largest city in the province. Winnipeg also prides itself on its flourishing art scene and has even sometimes been referred to as the “cultural cradle of Canada.”

It is home to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and hosts many festivals, including Folklorama, which is a two-week celebration of different cultures. While in Winnipeg, make sure to head over to The Forks, which is a popular shopping and entertainment district in the city.

3. Montreal

Montreal

Montreal, which is located in Quebec, is a Canadian city that has blended the old with the new and the French with the English. Its picturesque Old Montreal district boasts cobblestone streets and some buildings that date back to the 17th century. It is, in fact, one of the oldest urban neighborhoods in all of North America.

But Montreal is more than just its past. It is also a city of skyscrapers, boasts a lively nightlife and an Underground City. The latter is a series of office buildings, hotels, residential and commercial buildings that are all connected by underground tunnels, which can be very convenient during Montreal’s often bitter winters.

2. Quebec City

Quebec City

This city, which dates back to 1608 and is the capital of the province of Quebec, is very picturesque and charming. It also boasts a wonderful old town — Old Quebec — where you can walk cobblestone streets past well-preserved 17th- and 18th-century buildings. Old Quebec is the only walled city north of Mexico.

Quebec City is also home to the Citadelle of Quebec, which is an active fort and museum. The Citadelle is also the largest British fortress ever built in North America.

1. Vancouver

Vancouver

Vancouver, which is located in British Columbia , is one of the most culturally diverse cities in Canada. This mixing pot of cultures has helped make Vancouver into a culinary wonderland. In addition, this city’s microbrewery scene is also on the rise. Vancouver also boasts an excellent aquarium and several lovely parks, including Queen Elizabeth Park and Stanley Park.

The New York Times once called this vibrant city “Manhattan with mountains.” While the description is lovely, it forgets that Vancouver is also a seaport blessed with eight public beaches on the ocean and one on a lake.

Canada , our friendly northern neighbor, boasts extraordinarily diverse geography, from tall Rocky Mountain peaks to expansive flat prairie land and seaside communities on both coasts. With a smaller national population than that of California , it's perhaps unsurprising that Canada is also full of charming small towns and welcoming rural communities worth planning a trip around. You’ll find salty little enclaves, graced by orcas and world-class surfers in British Columbia; tiny mountain towns with Gold Rush history in the Yukon’s Grizzly country; and, of course, flannel-filled hubs for outdoors lovers who want to bike and hike in the country’s dramatic national parks. What links them together, though, is that small town spirit, and undeniable charm. (Don’t be surprised if your small town trip warrants big time vacation days—please like these are never easy to leave.)

For your next adventure north, here are some of the best small towns in Canada to explore, no matter what time of year you're traveling—or what type of trip you’re chasing.

And while there is still gold in the Yukon, the territory is now more known for its wildlife and boasts an unspoiled wilderness—not to mention a vibrant culinary scene and Indigenous First Nations culture that visitors can learn about at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre . Located on the shore of the Yukon River, it tells the story of the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in people who have lived on these lands for thousands of years.

Or explore the region's family highlights with Grotto Gardens Family Fun Farm 's alpacas, the T.rex Discovery Centre (home to the world's largest Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton), and Fort Walsh NHS , where the North-West Mounted Police began. After, unwind at Rockin’ Horse Cookout and Market with bar fare and live music.

Forget NAFTA negotiations and politics, the real relationship between Canada and the United States is best experienced in the small towns and villages that dot the world’s longest ‘undefended’ border. From bootleggers’ trading posts to historic settlements that were split in two by a border redrawn by war, here is a collection of fascinating spots to visit – all less than a day’s drive away from South Central Ontario.

Stanstead, Quebec and Derby Line, Vermont.

Manitoba, ontario and lake of woods, minnesota., sault ste. marie, ontario and sault ste. marie, michigan., fort frances, ontario and international falls, minnesota..

Plotting your border town adventure..

One of the best examples of a border town shared by Canada and the U.S. is in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. About an hour and a half southeast of Montreal, the towns of Stanstead, Quebec and Derby Line, Vermont were founded as essentially one village. A former Stanstead resident explained, “When I went to school in nearby Sherbrooke back in the late 1990s, you could fill up the tank of your car in one country and then cross the street and buy groceries in the other.”

A street with a white line painted on it.

In recent years, due to increased security concerns post 9/11, the border has become less arbitrary and more protected. Still, this town is home to the  Haskell Free Library and Opera House , a public library built right on the border that sits in two countries at once! While the entrance is in America, the books inside are technically located in Canada. Citizens of both countries are free to enter without going through customs. The borderline is actually painted along the floor. The opera space on the second floor is the only one in the world known to have the seats in one country and the stage in another.

A living room with a table and chairs.

With rolling green hills, forests, rivers and hundreds of lakes, this region is a great spot to visit for camping, going to the cottage and skiing. And while you’re there, be sure to stop by for a drink at Checkpoint Charlie. Just on the Stanstead side of the border, this bistro/bar was one of Canada’s very first banks and still has its original vaults in place.

This area includes the Northwest Angle on the shores of the region of Minnesota that is cut off by land from the rest of the U.S. by Canada and marks the northernmost point of the U.S. other than Alaska. Americans can only access the territory (without entering Canada) by crossing the  Lake of the Woods , which borders on Manitoba, Ontario and Minnesota, or by flying in.

The Angle , as it is known locally, is cut off from the rest of the U.S. by Southern Manitoba. Accessing the region by road requires crossing the border using the only gravel road in and out. Checkpoints along this route are unmanned. Travellers are expected to use a dedicated telephone at Jim’s Corner, or Carlson’s Landing to call and check in when crossing.

Known as the “ Walleye capital of the world ,” this region is a top choice for fishing and boating enthusiasts, as well as for camping, going to the cottage and outdoor adventure-seekers looking to explore the more than 14,000 islands, surrounding forests and shorelines of Lake of the Woods.

A yellow tent sits next to a lake in the woods.

Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario is just across the border from a twin city of the same name in Michigan. The two were actually one city up until the war of 1812 when the border was drawn along the St. Mary’s River, but they are still connected by the  International Bridge  across the river.

A bridge over a canal with a boat in the background.

Sault Ste. Marie has been a settlement for thousands of years, serving as a crossroads of fishing and trading around the Great Lakes. French explorers and missionaries founded one of earliest European settlements in North America here in the 1600s.

This area is home to the classic shores of two Great Lakes, sandy beaches, unspoiled forests, winding rivers and the natural beauty of Northern Ontario. It also boasts one of the largest towns in the region. The Sault (or the Soo) has a population of roughly 75,000 people.

Experience a Canada that is largely unchanged since it was captured by the Group of Seven and pop across the border for a visit to the U.S. just by crossing a bridge.

Adventure lovers will find plenty to be excited about in the off-the-beaten-path border town of  Fort Frances,  Ontario. Founded in 1731 as the first European settlement west of Lake Superior, this destination is located where the Rainy River meets the waters of Rainy Lake. It is connected to International Falls, Minnesota by the aptly (if not succinctly) named Fort Frances–International Falls International Bridge.

The region is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts of every stripe. The waters of Rainy Lake – and literally thousands of other nearby bodies of water – make this area a top spot for fishing, boating and swimming.

In the winter months, Northwestern Ontario offers an abundance of snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails, as well as ice-fishing opportunities on frozen lakes.

The region is also renowned for its spectacular sunsets, star-filled night skies and views of the Northern Lights. Enjoy the best of the great outdoors and, for a quaint visit to small town America, head across the river. International Falls was the inspiration for the fictional small Minnesota town of Frostbite Falls, the hometown of cartoon moose and squirrel of *The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends *and is the gateway to  Voyageurs National Park .

Fort Frances invites you to explore the  Great Canadian Experience .

The Thousand Islands, Ontario and New York, U.S.

Southern Ontario shares a unique border crossing with New York state along the St. Lawrence River and through the  Thousand Islands . These are actually a collection of over 1,800 large and small islands dotting the waters of St. Lawrence for 80 kilometres from Kingston to Brockville.

The Thousand Islands region played a prominent part in the war of 1812 and many historic forts and military outposts remain to this day. The area was also widely used by bootleggers to move liquor across the river during prohibition, so the islands are home to mansions and castles built by the booze barons of the era.

For those not crossing by water, the  Thousand Islands Bridge  connects the town of Ivy Lea, Ontario with Alexandria Bay, New York. While the entire region is a haven for sightseers, explorers and fans of water-based activities, the Canadian side of the border tends to be more tranquil and laid back, while Alexandria Bay has more nightlife and action in the summer months. It is also home to a 10-day pirate festival every August, celebrating the nefarious history of the region.

If you’re planning on visiting the region, and prefer to stay on dry land, take a detour off the 401 and enjoy the winding Thousand Islands Parkway, which runs along the river for nearly 55 kilometres between Gananoque and Brockville.

The capital of Ontario, the largest city in Canada, and the city that attracts the most visitors in the entire country – there's a lot to be said for Toronto, a bustling city of almost three million people , which is why it earned the top spot on this list.

First, the infamous Toronto landmarks. You can't mention Toronto without thinking of the iconic CN Tower , and many tourists take the time to visit popular tourist attractions like Ripley's Aquarium, Casa Loma , and the Toronto Zoo . Toronto also boasts world-renowned museums, including the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).

Toronto is also an entertainment hotspot, and the city's entertainment district is home to multiple theatres performing the latest Broadway shows . And fortunately, many of Toronto's trendiest restaurants are located mere steps from the theaters making for the perfect night out on the town.

But most Torontonians would argue that the major attractions aren't what make Toronto the best city in Canada: it's the diverse neighborhoods located throughout the city, each a micro cultural hub with unique restaurants, shops, and parks. From Little Italy to Chinatown to Little India to the Danforth (home to a large Greek community), you can experience food from around the world by hopping from neighborhood to neighborhood.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver is, without a doubt, Canada's most visually stunning city. With mountains to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the lush old-growth forest oasis of Stanley Park right downtown, the city's landscapes are jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Sunset in downtown Calgary

Welcome to Canada's Wild West: Calgary, Alberta is home to the famous Calgary Stampede , a week-long festival featuring rodeo events, concerts, special activities, and exhibitions galore. More than a million visitors head to "Cowtown" every year in early July to celebrate Calgary's farming and ranching heritage, making it one of the biggest festivals in the entire country.

Although under renovations for the foreseeable future, guided sightseeing tours of the Parliament Building on Parliament Hill are still available and will give you a peek into the world of Canadian government.

Old Montreal

Since being established in 1642 as a French mission station, Montreal (or Mont- Réal as it was back then) has risen in importance as both a world-class commercial and a cultural center. Today, not only is it Canada's second-largest city, it's also the world's second-biggest French-speaking city , surpassed only by Paris,

As big as it is, Montreal has, unlike many equally large cities in North America, managed to preserve not only its unique character but also many of its oldest buildings and neighborhoods. The best places to get a feeling for "Old Montreal" are in Vieux-Montreal , the heart of the original old colonial town, with its attractive old townhomes; and the equally picturesque "Old Port," or Vieux-Port, with its splendid promenade.

Add to this historic character the city's newer entertainment, museum, and arts districts, and you'll find no end of fun attractions to visit in Montreal .

Parliament Buildings in Victoria, British Columbia

Whether you love the outdoors, enjoy history, are a foodie, or simply a lover of beautiful places, Victoria will likely leave you with a lasting impression and the desire to return.

A highlight of a visit includes exploring the city's Inner Harbour , with its lengthy promenade; the lovely Butchart Gardens , which is especially lovely in spring; and the Royal BC Museum, with its large collections related to the country's cultural and natural history.

Architectural buffs will want to take a free tour of the British Colombia Legislative Buildings . Topping it all, the city's most iconic building, the majestic Fairmont Empress , founded in 1904, also happens to serve what is probably Canada's most authentic afternoon tea experience.

Attractions abound beyond the Inner Harbour. A short stroll away is Beacon Hill Park , crisscrossed with walking trails and set among huge old-growth trees, this park is not to be missed. Just off the park is Cook Street Village , a fun area of town with great coffee shops, eclectic shops, and restaurants.

Victoria is a popular cruise ship destination in Canada, often serving as a stopover point on journeys towards the striking glaciers of Alaska.

Colorful houses in St. John's, Newfoundland

Arguably one of the most underrated cities on this list, St. John's is a city simply unlike any other in Canada. From the local lingo and distinct Newfoundland accent to the colorful houses and the rugged, natural beauty of the coast, visiting St. John's almost feels like visiting an entirely different country – in the best of ways.

As the easternmost city in North America, St. John's has played several important roles throughout Canada's history. Check out Signal Hill , where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal, and the spectacular museum The Rooms , to learn about St. John's importance in Canada's historic wars and battles (before Newfoundland was even officially part of Canada!)

Downtown St. John's was ravaged by the Great Fire in 1892, but today, the city's downtown core is a great place to window shop, grab a bite to eat, and pick up some one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Visitors should also make time to explore the coast – whale watching and puffin viewing tours leave from just outside of town.

Summer in Saskatoon

There's an exciting, youthful vibe about Saskatoon – Saskatchewan's largest city – that contributed to its well-deserved spot on this list of Canada's best cities.

One of Saskatoon's surprising claims to fame is that it's said to boast the highest number of restaurants per capita of any city in the country. There are many options for those who want to experience fresh flavors grown right in Saskatchewan. Of course, you can't have a true culinary tour of the city without sampling a slice of Saskatoon berry pie.

The city has also put a lot of work into building a strong arts and cultural scene. Live music, theater, modern art galleries, and public art installations are just a few of the attractions you'll find when exploring the city's artistic side.

While there's lots going on in terms of culture, one of Saskatoon's greatest attractions is outside — just look up. The sky in Saskatoon is unlike anywhere else. Whether you're catching a sunset or simply spotting shapes in the clouds, you'll quickly understand why Saskatoon is dubbed the "Land of the Living Skies."

Thunder Bay, Ontario

From its humble beginnings as a fur trading post in the early 1800s, the northern Ontario city of Thunder Bay has transformed into a delightful tourist destination that has become increasingly popular with domestic and international tourists alike.

In fact, the city's first real non-native settlement, historic Fort William, can still be visited, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives and conditions of the time. Opened to the public as a "living museum" in the 1970s, it now consists of 42 faithfully reconstructed buildings occupied by costumed guides keen to describe their characters' roles and lives "back in the day."

Thunder Bay also boasts a spectacular waterfront, much of which has been the subject of major redevelopment in recent years. Stroll the promenades, and admire the sculptures and parks, all the while catching glimpses of the famous Sleeping Giant, a peninsula of land that really does look like a large man lying down and resting.

10 Best American-Canadian Border Cities To Visit

Feature Photo: Rony Stephen / Shutterstock

The 10 best American-Canadian border cities to visit comes from a collection of reviews by locals and travelers who are in agreement their community has the most to offer. Between top-notched hospitality and the convenient location that’s either on or very near the border that separates these two nations, these cities stand out as favorites. Whether visited frequently by travelers who frequently commute between America and Canada , or by tourists passing through for the first time, the charm of such a city often receives positive reviews as each visitor shares their experience.

Did you know that Canada and the United States remain the only two nations with the least protected borderland between them? These two nations often behave like brothers, even when they don’t always see eye to eye on every issue. For the most part, the cultures are pretty much the same. There are key differences that are easy enough to notice but overall, the two have much in common when it comes to everyday living. Between these two nations that have communities situated on or near the American-Canadian border, it’s not uncommon for the locals to cross the border back and forth several times throughout the course of a full year. Some do so daily, mainly among the population that has dual citizenship. There are some who live in one nation while working in the other, raking in the benefit of residing at such a convenient location.

10 Best American-Canadian Border Cities to Visit

# 10 – windsor, ontario.

In about ten minutes, one can travel between Canada’s Windsor, Ontario, and USA’s Detroit, Michigan, by car. By using the Detroit Windsor Tunnel, a motorist can trek across the Detroit River between these two cities. The Ambassador Bridge also connects these two cities together and is North America’s busiest border crossing for commercial vehicles. This is often the case among commuters who live in one of these two cities but work in the other for as long as they have dual citizenship. Windsor’s population sits at over two hundred thousand people but serves as a major hub for nearly half a million Canadian citizens. However, it’s also a popular destination for Americans who take advantage of the lower dollar value Canada has when it comes to shopping excursions. Aside from a shopper’s point of view as one of the best American-Canadian border cities, it’s also a great destination for travelers looking for a mix of natural and urbanized scenery. Windsor’s Peche Island City Park serves as the community’s crown jewel, which is also home to the Historic Cement Bridge. It’s definitely worth the visit.

Lake St. Clair is the large body of water that graces the northwestern shoreline of Windsor, which is a huge draw for outdoor enthusiasts. Also referred to as the Automotive Capital of Canada , Windsor enjoys a proud heritage as a city responsible for the industrialization and manufacturing of motor vehicles. As Windsor continues to grow as a city focused on the future as a major contributor to industry, it also focuses on its value as a tourist destination. Caesars Windsor is one of Canada’s largest casinos and serves as a major draw for Americans to see how far their dollar can stretch while visiting there. Among visitors not interested in gambling, there are more than enough recreational activities to keep fans of the indoors, as well as fans of the outdoors, busy.

# 9 – Abbotsford, British Columbia

Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada has a city population of over one hundred and fifty thousand citizens. It takes just over ten minutes to drive directly south from this Canadian community to the American border town of Sumas, Washington. The province of British Columbia, including Abbotsford, is world famous for its natural beauty between the mountainous landscape, lakes, and rivers. Don’t forget, this is the province that has its west coast meet with the Pacific Ocean. What makes Abbotsford especially appealing to visit is the neighborly hospitality the locals give to just about everyone they meet.

The best of so many worlds is found here, often causing a traveler to wonder if this really is a city or not. Surrounded by farmland, as well as beautiful parks, this is one of the most beautiful cities a motorist can possibly travel along the American-Canadian border. Because this is a major hub of commercial and industrial activity, it’s also a popular daily commute for Americans and Canadians alike. If Abbotsford doesn’t have enough to cater to travelers visiting the city, Vancouver is only about ninety minutes to the west. It’s one of Canada’s largest cities and one of the most popular destinations in the world to visit. The closest major American city to Abbotsford is Seattle, Washington. For as long as there are no border crossing delays, it takes between two to three hours to get there by car.

# 8 – Fort Frances, Ontario

Over seven thousand Canadians call Fort Frances, Ontario their home. Sitting just north of its neighboring city of International Falls, Minnesota, it holds its ground as one of the best American-Canadian border cities to visit. This place is amazing between its historical landmarks and natural beauty. It is also a major hub of commercial activity as daily commuters and truckers travel to and fro between destinations. In order to keep up, Fort Frances makes sure it’s able to accommodate so much traffic. This isn’t easy to do as the demands of a growing population continue to test the resolve of Mother Nature.

Fort Frances, Ontario is able to do it, however. The history of this city begins as the first European settlement west of Lake Superior. It was established in 1731 by a French Canadian named Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Verendrye. After the war between the Americans and the British in 1812, the Hudson’s Bay Company built a fort at Fort Frances. Aside from this city’s history, the natural wonderment surrounding it continues to draw travelers from all over just to visit. This city borders to the east of the infamous Lake of the Woods. Among outdoor enthusiasts, Fort Frances, Ontario remains an all-time favorite. It also accommodates visitors who prefer to spend their time indoors with several activities and shopping opportunities to keep them entertained.

# 7 – International Falls, Minnesota

With a population of over five thousand people, International Falls, Minnesota enjoys the convenience of an American-Canadian border city, unlike many others. This American city sits on the Rainy River, directly across from Canada’s city of Fort Frances, Ontario. It is connected to its Canadian neighbor by the Fort Frances-International Falls International Bridge. Located eleven miles east of International Falls, Voyageurs National Park has served as one of the most popular tourist destinations along the American-Canadian border. It is also among the coldest as International Falls is also referred to as the “Icebox of the Nation.” On average, over one hundred days per year sits below the freezing temperature mark.

The geographical importance of International Falls first began realizing its true potential in 1895 when L.A. Ogaard taught on behalf of the Koochiching Company. Originally, the city was named Koochiching, a term used by the indigenous tribes of the region. The English translation referred to Koochiching as “the place of inlets.” Rainy Lake and Rainy River were names given to the bodies of water in this city by the Europeans who settled there. These names came about due to the misty presence that’s strongly felt where the falls and the lake flow into the river. In 1903, Koochichin was renamed International Falls. To this day, it continues to play a major role in the border connection between Canada and the United States. The geographical and historical wonderment of International Falls, Minnesota makes this city an absolute must for visitors traveling along the American-Canadian border.

# 6 – Buffalo, New York

The distance from Buffalo, New York to the Canadian border is short enough that it takes only half an hour to drive to the Canadian border city known as Niagara Falls, Ontario. It takes less than ten minutes to drive from Buffalo to the Canadian Border Agency’s Peace Bridge and cross over. This is, of course, the border crossing itself hasn’t met with any delays or lineups. For Canadians living in the Golden Horseshoe region, visiting Buffalo, New York is a favorite destination to run away from home without having to go so far. With approximately three hundred thousand citizens living in Buffalo, the close proximity of Buffalo allows Canadians to enjoy everything it has to offer. As for visitors traveling along the American-Canadian border, this makes for a great city to visit.

One of the must-see points of interest is the Lake Erie Canal. This architectural wonder played an important role in Buffalo’s expansion as it went from village to city after this ambitious project was completed. Buffalo also has a rich history, especially as a community that played a very important role during the events leading up to the American Civil War. The infamous Underground Railroad saw fugitive slaves make their way to Buffalo during the 1840s. From there, most escaped across the Niagara River into Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. Many freed members of the black community stayed put, playing an instrumental role in Buffalo’s expansion as a city. Today, Buffalo remains a geographical hub of activity for commercial travelers who travel back and forth between Canada and the United States on a regular basis.

Among history buffs, visiting Buffalo is a must. What’s interesting about this city is the tradition it carries as a city that has independent settlements. There are five main districts that may have seen the neighborhoods change over time but remains as a city focused on improving its future. In 2021, Buffalo was ranked as the seventh-best city to visit in the United States by Travel + Leisure because of its dedication to cultural diversification and growth potential. Between the historical sites and the celebratory events, Buffalo has earned its place as one of the best American-Canadian border cities to visit.

# 5 – Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Until 1812, Sault Ste. Marie was one city that sat on top of the American-Canadian border. One-half of it sat in Ontario while the other sat in Michigan. The events revolving around the war in 1812 changed that and a line across the St. Marie River was drawn that separated it into two cities. Connecting these two cities together is the International Bridge. Speaking as someone who has been there, this place is awesome. Long before the French explorers and missionaries founded what we recognize as Sault Ste. Marie, the indigenous population called it home for well over a thousand years. This was actually one of the earliest European settlements in America when it was founded in the 1600s.

The population of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is over ten thousand people. Although considerably smaller than its Canadian counterpart, there is no lack of appeal to this American community. The French were the original settlers, naming the city and its river after Saint Mary. The spelling of the name, however, owes its archaic roots to the Middle French Period. As a word, “saut” or “sault” made reference to cataracts, rapids, and waterfalls. Sault Ste. Marie has an abundance of that along its river, as well as the city itself. The English translation of Sault Sainte-Marie is “Rapids of Saint Mary.” The Saint Mary’s River spans from Lake Superior to Lake Huron, which are two of the five Great Lakes that make this American-Border destination so popular.

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan may not be huge as a city but it’s loaded with spectacular scenery and history that makes this one of the best places to visit as an American-Canadian border city. There are some notable landmarks in the area that are worth the visit. The Soo Locks have a set of parallel locks that enable ships to travel between Lake Superior and the rest of the Great Lakes. The waterfalls and the rapids are must-see sites that allow a visitor to take in the splendor of Mother Nature.

# 4 – Niagara Falls, New York

When referencing Niagara Falls, the majority of vacation planners are likely to think of the city located in Ontario, Canada. Not very many realize there is another Niagara Falls, but in New York, USA. For years, this city of nearly fifty thousand people has lived in the shadow of its Canadian neighbor. Because of this, it somewhat serves as a hidden gem among tourists who realize this is a city well worth the visit. The distance between these two cities, by car, is slightly over ten minutes. Before the Europeans migrated to this city, it was dominated by the Neutral Nation of Native Americans. In 1679, Fort Conti was built after Robert de la Salle received permission from the native Iroquois to do so. This served as a base for his ship as it traveled the upper Niagara River near Cayuga Creek.

The natural beauty of the horseshoe-shaped falls served as a major draw that would see the American version of Niagara Falls blossom into a heavily industrialized city before the end of the nineteenth century. At that time, Niagara Falls, New York focused more on industrialism than it did on tourism. As the times changed, so did the direction of this American city. Although still an important hub of industrial activity, the focus on attracting tourists has gained enough ground as its equal.

The advantage Niagara Falls, New York has over Niagara Falls, Canada includes the value of the American dollar compared to the Canadian dollar. People living along the border in this region know this, using it to their advantage. Among those with dual citizenship that often travel daily between both communities, it’s not uncommon to see Americans trek into Canada to buy their goods. At the same time, Canadians usually try to fuel up at the American pumps. The American dollar is usually worth at least ten percent or higher than the Canadian dollar. Meanwhile, the price of fuel in America is usually much lower than in Canada.

The Niagara Falls State Park is one of the city’s primary attractions between its popular Maid of the Mist boat tours from Rainbow Bridge, Bridal Veil Falls, and Cave of the Winds. When roaming about in the great outdoors to take in the natural scenery doesn’t suit one’s fancy, there are several indoor attractions and activities such as the Niagara falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center and the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel.

# 3 – Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

With a population of over seventy-thousand people in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the Canadian half of this city sits directly north of its American counterpart along the St. Marie River. Connecting it to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is the International Bridge. Once upon a time, these twin cities were actually one community. It was divided in 1812 after the war between the Americans and the British ran its course. However, these two cities still behave as one as commuters often travel along International Bridge as they go about their daily business. Some live as Canadians, working in America. Some live as Americans, working in Canada.

As a tourist destination, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario continues to remain one of the most popular locations to take a vacation. The city, as well as the surrounding communities, parks, and scenery, is truly breathtaking. The historical significance of the Canadian half of this border city offers so much more than a learning opportunity for visitors. It also offers awesome visuals of how man and nature work together to make the most out of its demographics, along with the challenges that come with it. This is a natural playground for people who love the great outdoors, regardless of the season. Among those who prefer to stay indoors, there are casinos, shopping, and a variety of attractions that are bound to keep them busy and entertained for the duration of their visit.

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, despite the business of this hub city that has connections sprawling out in every direction, remains one of the greenest cities in North America. Should one visit this city between June and October, be sure to take advantage of the Agawa Canyon Tour Train. This is worth it as one takes a full-day journey through the Canadian wilderness as it travels over a hundred miles north of the city.

# 2 – Detroit, Michigan

The majority of the time, the Canadian border sits north of the American border. However, from Detroit, Michigan, one can travel southbound for about seven minutes to reach Canada’s Windsor, Ontario. This is accomplished by driving the Detroit Windsor Tunnel. Even not as a border city, Detroit is worth the visit as an urbanized tourist destination. It has so much to offer as a city with its abundant mix of culture, history, and scenery. This city is on the bank of the Detroit River and is home to Belle Isle and its Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. Among nature enthusiasts, this is an absolute must to visit. Belle Isle Beach is also nothing short of fantastic.

Aside from the natural beauty Detroit has access to, the history of the city includes the birth of Motown. When visiting this city, doing so without visiting Motown Museum would almost feel like a crime, especially if you’re a fan of the cultural influence it brought to the music industry. That influence continues to make its mark today. Detroit also has a flurry of art museums, historical monuments, and various venues that makes visiting this American-Canadian border city worth visiting. The population of Detroit is over six hundred thousand people in the city alone. However, it caters to over four million people when factoring in the entire metropolitan area.

Among all the American-Canadian border cities, Detroit is the largest. A city this large is bound to have something for everyone, which it does. Even if you’re not interested in taking in the business of the city, one doesn’t have to travel far for some peace and quiet. On average, Detroit receives nearly sixteen million visitors per year. The numbers alone illustrate this is not only among the best American-Canadian border cities to visit but throughout all of North America as well.

Also referred to as Motor City, Detroit’s contribution to the North American automotive industry is legendary. There is so much to see and do in Detroit that it would take at least a week to take in the best of the best. This is also a city that’s world-famous for its visual appeal of magnificent murals and architectural splendor. The Guardian Building is a must if you’re into architecture and history. If art is your thing, One Campus Martius has the world’s largest indoor waterfall that’s adorned with a colorful assortment of suspended glass kites. That’s just one of many worthy places to visit to take in how creative the human race can be. As a whole, Detroit has been serving a shining beacon as one of North America’s most vibrant cities when it comes to cultural diversity, entertainment, industrialism, and tourism.

#1 – Niagara Falls, Ontario

Once upon a time, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada was considered the honeymoon capital of the world. Among several Canadian newlyweds, this is still the case. Among many American couples who’ve tied the knot, this also remains near the top of the list as a favorite destination to visit. Ontario’s favorite city sits on the western bank of the Niagara River and has a population of approximately ninety-thousand people. What makes Niagara Falls so popular is the horseshoe-shaped waterfall. This spectacular site attracts millions of tourists from all over the world every year.

Situated straight across this Canadian city and its infamous waterfall is Niagara Falls, New York. In addition to the falls, there are also historical sites, as well as several other points of interest that aim to maintain its popularity as a tourist town. While Niagara Falls, Ontario continues to dominate as one of Canada’s top tourist attractions, Niagara Falls, New York strives to serve as its American equivalent. Among the American population, visiting the Canadian version of Niagara Falls works to their advantage as the value of the Canadian dollar consistently sits lower than the American dollar. This means every American citizen who ventures into any Canadian community gets more bang for their buck, so to speak.

As casinos have become just as popular as sightseeing for many visitors, American tourists tend to spend some of their money there. This is also the case when it comes to shopping. Instead of spending $100.00 US on goods in their own country, Americans living close enough to a Canadian city along the border won’t give it a second thought to hop across and spend that same amount of money that will result in at least twenty percent more stuff to bring back home with them. Among Canadians who live close enough to an American city or town, the price of fuel tends to attract them to do the same. On average, fuel costs are cheaper in the US than in Canada. Commuters who live along the border between these two nations often do the bulk of their shopping in Canada but make a point to hit the American gas pumps when it’s time to fuel up.

From a tourist’s point of view who pays more attention to what Niagara Falls has to offer overall, the natural beauty of this city remains the primary reason why it’s regarded as the best American-Canadian border city to visit. Not only is this a favorite destination for honeymooners but for families as well. This is the Golden Horseshoe region’s pride and joy, as well as Tourism Canada. This was a place of great importance during the war of 1812 as the United States of America squared off against the United Kingdom and its British North American allies. At this time, Canada wasn’t officially established yet as a named nation. That didn’t happen until July 1, 1867. Today, Niagara Falls remains a major hub of activity, still serving as a crossroads that leads to larger cities such as Toronto, Ontario to the north, Buffalo, New York to the south, and Detroit, Michigan to the west. It only takes half an hour to drive between Niagara Falls and Buffalo.

A first-timer's guide to Saskatoon, Canada

From timing your visit right to planning your activities, here's our first-timer's guide to Saskatoon © K. D. Kirchmeier / Getty Images

Surrounded by gentle wheat fields beneath a dome of great prairie skies, Saskatoon is the largest city in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan .

Straddling the South Saskatchewan River, it has been the province’s cultural and economic hub since its settlement in the late 19th century (but not its capital – that falls to Regina).

The Northern Plains Indigenous Peoples had been guardians of this land for over 6000 years when, in 1883, white Methodists founded the town as a temperance colony, naming it after the purple berry growing in the region. While the railroad eventually reached the fledgling town in 1890, Saskatoon still only had 113 inhabitants at the turn of the century. A boom period of new settlers and entrepreneurs soon followed, and Saskatoon grew into a thriving city, albeit isolated from big cities like Vancouver , Toronto and Montréal .

Today, the sometimes stark prairie landscapes around the city look like nowhere else in the country. Downtown, you’ll find street art tours, compelling museums, craft beer breweries, a variety of architecture and some fine riverside trails. And Saskatoon now proudly explains and celebrates the Indigenous Peoples who have been here for thousands of years, with the Wanuskewen complex a majestic and poignant monument to that past and present.

These top tips can help you plan a trip to Saskatoon.

The night sky glows behind some riverside buildings following sunset

When should I go to Saskatoon?

Though Saskatoon – one of the sunniest cities in Canada  – receives plenty of sunlight (2350.4 hours annually), winters are long and cold so plan to visit during the glorious summer months between June and August. This is the busiest time of year, but since Saskatoon is a little more under-the-radar than other Canadian cities, it’s not overwhelmed by tourists and offers much better value for money regarding accommodation and eating out.

The city comes alive with music on those effulgent summer days with magnificent festivals across multiple genres including the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival , Rock the River and the Ness Creek Music Festival . And for those who do want to embrace Saskatchewan winter scenes, the Nutrien Wintershines Festival hosts ice sculptures, cook-offs, stargazing and more.

How long should I spend in Saskatoon?

Allow two to three days to explore Saskatoon, but also leave time for attractions on the city’s outskirts that make use of the abundant prairie space. You’ll spend the majority of your time in downtown Saskatoon, on the river trails and the Broadway neighborhood, which is ideal for a weekend. More planning is needed for the excursions out of the city, so map out an extra day or two for those depending on time and budget.

Is it easy to get in and around Saskatoon?

Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport is 7km (4 miles) northwest of downtown Saskatoon, which is about 18 minutes by taxi, the most convenient form of travel to any downtown hotel. The number 11 bus also runs from the airport, and takes around 30 minutes to make the same journey (without factoring in walking to the hotel).

Though its streets are wide, Saskatoon’s downtown core is highly walkable and there are several bridges spanning the South Saskatchewan River that link to Broadway Ave’s bars, cafes and stores. Consider hiring a bike too, as the relatively flat landscape and serpentine river trails are ideal for cycling. Visitors to Wanuskewen will need to hire a car or take a taxi.

Traveling elsewhere in Canada? Here are our top tips on transportation

A flat path alongside a river

6 of the best things to do in Saskatoon

1. explore the meewasin valley trail.

Saskatoon’s huge prairie skies are evocative and entice you outside, so the best way to experience the great outdoors here is by following some of the Meewasin Valley Trail . Flanking the serpentine river, the 25km (15 mile) trails are a fine introduction to Saskatoon’s cityscape, and are best experienced on two wheels (look out for the motivational chalk murals and messages along the way).

2. See artworks in the Remai Modern

The river winds south to River Landing in downtown’s southern tip, and it’s here that the Tetris-like Remai Modern  museum rises up on a small bluff. Alongside a permanent collection featuring over 8000 works from Canadian and international artists, there’s also a quirky permanent exhibition of ceramics and linocuts by Pablo Picasso in this spacious museum bursting with natural light.

3. Enjoy the buss of Broadway Avenue

A short walk across the Broadway Bridge brings cinematic city views followed by a stroll into arguably the most vibrant corner of Saskatoon. Airy breweries , buzzing bistros, kitsch vinyl stores and the iconic Broadway Theatre fringe Broadway Ave, which is a fine spot to spend a morning, afternoon or evening (perhaps even all three?).

4. Take yourself on a tour of downtown's murals and architecture

Back in downtown, discover an art-splashed city on a self-guided street art tour passing by huge murals and multicolored installations spanning 20th and 23rd Street East. Even if you’re not staying there, the Delta Bessborough Hotel is something of a work of art itself. Completed in 1935, the Bessborough is a soaring Châteauesque turreted and gabled affair reminiscent of Bavarian castles that looks startlingly out of place.

5. See how Saskatoon was

Towards the edge of the city, the Western Development Museum’s compelling Boomtown exhibit is an indoor reconstruction of a typical Saskatchewan small-town main street from 1910, complete with a blacksmith, church and train station.

6. Taste local produce at the farmers market

And for a true experience of this land, it’s worth a visit to the Saskatoon Farmers Market  – an institution running since 1975 and stuffed with vendors selling everything from wild berries to handmade moccasins.

My favorite thing to do in Saskatoon

There’s a magical quality to watching the sun sink behind the widescreen horizon at Wanuskewin Heritage Park . Not like the picture-postcard sunsets you see on Caribbean beaches, it’s more of a calming, spiritual feeling as the sun’s soft glow fades across the marshy creeks and wooded ridges of the Opamihaw Valley. Shortly after, I watched the moon rise against a blue evening canvas. Known as nēhiyawēwin in Plains Cree, Wanuskewin roughly translates to "seeking peace of mind" and that name couldn’t be more apt.

Around 20 minutes north of downtown Saskatoon, Wanuskewin tells the story of the Northern Plains Indigenous People’s spiritual relationship to this land and the living creatures they share it with, most notably the repopulated bison. You can explore panels, artwork, interactive classes, traditional food and much more, but most importantly that story – which is never sugarcoated – is told by Indigenous People themselves. Few experiences I’ve had in North America have felt deeper and more enlightening than this one.

How much money do I need for Saskatoon?

  • Hostel room: $79
  • Hotel room for two: $94
  • Public transport ticket: $3
  • Coffee: $3.60
  • Sandwich: $3
  • Dinner for two: $73
  • Beer/pint at a bar: $5.80

Should I visit in winter?

With an average temperature of -13°C (8°F) in January, winter in Saskatoon is only for the hardiest of souls. However, one bonus of a visit in this season – along with budget-friendly prices – is the chance of seeing the northern lights, with the aurora's stunning swirls sometimes visible if the stars align (no pun intended). Just remember to pack plenty of layers.

What language is spoken in Saskatoon?

Though English and French are official languages in Saskatchewan, English is by far the most spoken language in Saskatoon and you’ll need it for all of your interactions.

The 18 best places to see the northern lights.

Check the aurora borealis off your bucket list.

The Best Places for the Northern Lights

The northern lights, known as the aurora borealis, are a spectacular natural light show visible at certain times of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. They occur when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, creating vibrant streaks of blue, green, pink and violet dancing across the night sky. 2024 and 2025 are an excellent time to catch the northern lights: Solar activity will be at a peak, making for a more impressive experience, if you're in the right place.

The best places to see the aurora borealis have little light pollution, clear skies and no precipitation. The lights are only visible at northern latitudes when it's dark outside, so the months from September to April are best for seeing the aurora. There's also a Southern Hemisphere counterpart, the aurora australis; there are fewer easy spots from which to view this phenomenon, but if you're lucky, it can be equally brilliant.

For more information on the northern lights, scroll down to the FAQ section at the bottom of this page. Read on to discover the top destinations where you can see the kaleidoscopic northern and southern lights.

Fairbanks, Alaska

Aurora borealis over tree line in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Fairbanks is by far one of the best places in the world to view the northern lights, as it's located directly under the auroral oval. This ring-shaped zone sits around the Earth's geomagnetic North Pole and is generally associated with the most vibrant aurora sightings. Visitors can expect to see the lights on an average of four out of five clear nights during aurora season, which lasts from late August to late April.

You can book a northern lights tour to see the aurora from the springs and tubs at Chena Hot Springs Resort. This excursion includes round-trip transportation to the resort from town, a soak in the hot springs, a visit to the Fairbanks Aurora Ice Museum and an aurora viewing tour; dinner and drinks centered around Alaska produce are an option extra with hot drinks supplied.

There's more to Fairbanks than just the northern lights: If you visit in late summer, consider family-friendly activities like a ride on the Riverboat Discovery or gold panning. For a festive holiday experience in the winter, head around 15 miles out of Fairbanks to visit the Santa Claus House in the city of North Pole. Travelers can also see ice sculptures in February and March at the impressive World Ice Art Championships or take a dog-sledding or snowmobiling tour .

Where to stay: For excellent chances of aurora viewing, book a private igloo at Borealis Basecamp, a top glamping resort located on 100 remote acres of boreal forest about 25 miles from Fairbanks. With activities like dog-sledding on top of aurora viewing, past visitors regularly describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tromsø, Norway

Norther lights over landscape of Tromsø, Norway.

Located about 220 miles above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is one of several top spots to view the northern lights in Norway. At the darkest point of the aurora season – which runs from September to early April – the sun doesn't rise in this northern part of the country, although there is twilight during the day. With this level of darkness, there are more opportunities to see the aurora.

Tromsø itself is a small but lively city, so there's plenty to see and do when you're not looking up at the sky, including a visit to the beautiful Arctic Cathedral. In late January to early February, the city hosts the Northern Lights Festival, a 10-day music and performing arts event featuring a variety of musical genres.

Aurora chasers can view the lights on their own while in town, but to get a better view, it's recommended to head away from the city lights. Arctic Circle Tours is one company offering guided trips, with small groups for a more personal vibe. Alternatively, adventure-seekers can embark on an exhilarating husky trekking expedition in the Arctic wilderness.

Where to stay: For accommodations with harbor views, look no further than the Scandic Ishavshotel – guests love it for its convenient central location in the city, as well as its plus-sized breakfast buffet with plenty of choices.

Luosto and Rovaniemi (Lapland), Finland

Northern lights over Pyhae Luosto National Park in northern Finland.

Lapland is located within the Arctic Circle in the northernmost part of Finland. The northern lights are most visible here between the end of August and April – and approximately 200 times a year – so there are many opportunities for aurora spotting. Finnish Lapland is also known as home to the Sámi people (the only recognized Indigenous group in the European Union region), some 200,000 reindeer and Santa Claus – who can be visited in the town of Rovaniemi, the region's largest city and a great base for your aurora expedition.

Consider venturing roughly 70 miles north of Rovaniemi to the resort town of Luosto, set among the picturesque and hilly landscape of Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Here, you can also spend a magical evening outdoors under star-filled skies during a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-covered forests. Jaakkola Reindeer Farm offers a reindeer sleigh tour to spot the aurora once weekly; it includes a stop to warm up at a bonfire camp with snacks, hot beverages and local fireside stories.

Where to stay: For a bucket list experience, watch the impressive light show from a glass igloo at Santa's Hotel Aurora & Igloos in Luosto. Past visitors love the cozy atmosphere here, boosted by amenities like saunas and log fireplaces. If you're sticking to Rovaniemi, the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is a stunning choice, with designer cabins perched among the snow-covered taiga forest.

Orkney, Scotland

Northern lights over a lake in the Scottish Highlands.

This group of captivating (and mostly uninhabited) islands, located about 10 miles off Scotland's remote northern coast, is one of the best places to see the northern nights in the U.K. Fall and winter are the best seasons to witness the aurora, also known in local Shetland dialect as the "Mirrie Dancers," with fall bringing the highest proportion of clear nights. A few places to see the spectacular light show include along the coast at Birsay or the Broch of Gurness, an archaeological ruin on a sweeping and dramatic coastline.

In addition to the aurora, Orkney is home to breathtaking coastal landscapes and more sheep than you can count (try some local lamb, if you can). Travelers can also visit the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with several monuments dating back 5,000 years.

Where to stay: During your visit, plan to stay in the historic town of Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney Islands: The no-fuss Ayre Hotel offers harbor views, and past visitors compliment the hearty meals in the hotel restaurant. Spot the aurora close to town at Inganess Bay and Wideford Hill.

Yellowknife, Canada

Northern lights over trees and lights in Yellowknife, Canada.

Yellowknife, the capital of Canada 's Northwest Territories, dubs itself the "Aurora Capital of the World." Thanks to its position in the middle of the auroral oval, the city puts on one of the world's most awe-inspiring light shows. The period from mid-November to the beginning of April is the recommended time to spot the aurora, but it's also possible to see the aurora during more hospitable weather from late summer to early fall as the lights are visible up to 240 days a year.

Located on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife boasts winter sports such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing. If you visit in March, plan to attend the monthlong Snowkings' Winter Festival, which features events and activities like a snow-carving competition, a snow castle, live music and more.

For a unique experience, book a tour through Aurora Village to view the lights. The property will pick you up from your hotel and take you to its site, where you can stay warm in a tent while sipping hot beverages. The Aboriginal-owned Aurora Village also offers activities such as dog-sledding or snowshoeing excursions.

Where to stay: Warm up in the fireside lounge at The Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife. Previous visitors note the warm and helpful staff as a strength here.

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Two people sitting on a the ice of a lake and watching the northern lights in the north of Sweden.

The optimal time for seeing the illuminated skies in the northern part of Sweden, known as Swedish Lapland, is between early September and late March. The small Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi sits around 125 miles above the Arctic Circle on the Torne River and is an ideal locale for aurora viewing. You'll fly to the nearby Kiruna Airport to get here. With the village's origins dating back to the 17th century, you can still find some of the original homesteads, including an old timber cottage. Today the village boasts 800 residents – and more than 1,000 dogs.

Where to stay: If you're up for a chilly overnight adventure, reserve accommodations at the world's first permanent ice hotel, the aptly named Icehotel 365. Each of its artist-designed suites is sculpted from ice with a unique theme and maintains temperatures around minus 5 degrees Celsius (about 23 degrees Fahrenheit). The rooms also feature beds with reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags so you can bundle up during the night. While you're at the property, take advantage of the guided "Northern Lights Safari on Snowmobile" or embark on the "Moose Safari on Horseback" atop an Icelandic horse.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Northern lights above Hallgrimskirkja Church in central Reykjavik, Iceland.

October through March is the best time to chase the aurora borealis in Iceland . There are numerous natural parks and attractions throughout the country where you can view the show during the long and dark winter, but the capital city of Reykjavik also offers many options for accommodations, restaurants, tours and other activities for your visit. For optimum aurora viewing in the city away from the light pollution, head to Öskjuhlið. This wooded and hilly area in Reykjavik sits at 200 feet above sea level and has walkways and paths where you can see the nighttime show.

Atop this hill sits Perlan, which houses the only planetarium in the country and a museum featuring exhibits about Iceland. Perlan is also home to the world's first indoor ice cave and glacier exploratorium. During your visit, don't miss the panoramic views of the city from the building's fourth-floor observation deck. From this vantage point, you'll be able to see the Snæfellsjökull glacier; Keilir, a volcanic mountain; and Esja, the mountain of Reykjavik.

Where to stay: While in Reykjavik, splurge on an overnight tour with Buubble Tours. This experience includes breathtaking sightseeing spots and a night spent under the magical northern skies in a transparent bubble at the 5 Million Star Hotel. For longer stays, consider the eco-friendly Eyja Guldsmeden Hotel, with sweeping views of the city – guests love it for its cozy yet chic Scandinavian design.

Southern Iceland

Northern lights over Reynisfjara black sand beach in Iceland.

While Reykjavik is a great aurora-viewing spot if you like having amenities close by, consider getting out into Iceland's stunning, otherworldly countryside for a unique backdrop for the northern lights. One unique place to see them is the black sand beach at Reynisfjara (but watch out for the dangerous waves here). Alternatively, head to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon and seal habitat, where the aurora's reflections in the icy water are truly beautiful.

There's no shortage of tours that will stop by these locations and more for possible aurora sightings. Consider a 10- or 13-day tour around the country with Fun Travel, or a four-day option from Arctic Adventures. If you want to do things at your own place, it's also possible to self-drive – just know that road conditions can be icy, particularly in the depths of winter (although Icelandic roads are generally well-maintained).

Where to stay: Hotel Rangá is a formidable option for aurora-spotting. It offers a variety of special amenities, such as aurora wake-up calls, a lookout deck and snowsuits to keep you warm if you're outside viewing the lights. Past visitors praise Rangá for being a comfortable yet luxurious place to relax, be it in the outdoor hot tubs or the cozy and sociable bar.

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Northern lights reflected in water with mountains in eastern Greenland.

Greenland may not be the most accessible place to travel for viewing the northern lights, with limited flight options (mostly via Iceland), but those who make it here will be thrilled they did. The tundra of Kalaallit Nunaat – the Greenlandic name for the country – is one of the best places on the globe to see the aurora from September to early April.

For the more adventurous aurora seekers, head to the top of the Greenland Ice Cap for spectacular views of the lights. This impressive glacier covers 80% of the country and is accessible via the tiny town of Kangerlussuaq. Located on a fjord right along the Arctic Circle, the town, often described as a gateway to Greenland, was a former U.S. Air Force base and is now home to Greenland's main airport. The town is known for having clear skies on some 300 nights per year, so chances of a sighting are particularly good here.

Tour company Guide to Greenland offers various tours, from two-hour aurora-viewing trips to a tough but rewarding multi-night dog-sledding expedition across the ice. For a less strenuous experience, companies like Nordic Saga Tours offer cruises through the Arctic landscapes around Kangerlussuaq.

Viking cruise along Norway's coast

Embrace the winter and set sail for the Arctic Circle to experience the aurora in northern Norway. The 13-day "In Search of the Northern Lights" cruise itinerary with Viking departs from London for the North Sea with stops in ports of call that are top aurora-viewing locales, including Tromsø, Alta and Narvik, plus a stop in Amsterdam en route. The cruise ends in Bergen, Norway.

While on land, take in the natural beauty of the snow-blanketed landscapes and book bucket list excursions like a night spent in an igloo or a reindeer sledding adventure. You can also chase the lights into the wilderness by snowmobile, take a dog sled ride under the stars or view them from a Sámi tent atop the mountain Pæska in Alta. This Viking Ocean Cruises itinerary is offered with departure dates from mid-January to mid-March.

Headlands International Dark Sky Park, Michigan

Northern Lights shine through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Forest.

Regarded as one of the top spots in the U.S. to see the aurora outside Alaska, Headlands International Dark Sky Park sits at the top of Michigan 's lower peninsula, less than 5 miles from Mackinaw City. While the northern lights are less common here due to the relatively southern location, the best time to catch a glimpse of this phenomenon is typically during the spring and fall – and appearances can usually be predicted a couple of days in advance. The park even maintains an online Clear Sky Chart so you can check the weather forecast before you go.

There are also other stargazing opportunities throughout the year at Headlands. During the summer months the Milky Way is visible across the sky, and late summer evenings entertain visitors with meteor showers.

Where to stay: If you're visiting between late April and the end of October, splurge on a stay at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island, where the aurora should also be visible. Guests describe this iconic property situated along the shoreline of Lake Huron as positively charming, thanks to its historic nature and manicured grounds. The resort also offers a host of outdoor activities from bike rentals to swimming.

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Located on the international border between Minnesota and Ontario, Voyageurs National Park is an approximately 218,000-acre labyrinth of boreal forests, lakes and streams. Voyageurs is Minnesota's only national park; it's also unique in that the park's interior is accessible only by boat, unless you visit by snowmobile in winter. As a certified International Dark Sky Park , Voyageurs provides opportunities to view the Milky Way on clear evenings, especially in the summer. Year-round aurora viewing is also possible on evenings with clear dark skies, but chances are better during the winter, when it's dark for longer.

For a guided stargazing tour – including the Milky Way, the constellations and (if you're lucky) the northern lights – book with Voyageurs Outfitters. If you're on your own, park officials note that almost any campsite is a good spot for northern lights viewing and stargazing. You can also check out the boat launch areas around Ash River, Kabetogama Lake and the Rainy Lake Visitor Center for top-notch views.

Where to stay: Those who prefer to sleep in a warm, cozy bed instead of camping under the stars can make reservations at the Cantilever Distillery + Hotel, a boutique Trademark Collection by Wyndham property in the nearby town of Ranier, Minnesota. Visitors report that there's a lot to like here, from the industrial-chic rooms to friendly staff to top-notch cocktails in the active distillery on the premises.

Abisko National Park, Sweden

Northern lights seen from Abisko Mountain Station in Abisko, Sweden.

Given its Arctic location, Sweden is one of the prime spots for aurora viewing in the Northern Hemisphere, with Swedish Lapland at the top of the list. The fall and winter months (from September to March) offer the best opportunities to witness the spectacle, as there is more darkness than light during the days.

If you're up for the Arctic adventure, December is an ideal month to visit Abisko National Park, which some regard as one of the best places on Earth to see the lights dance across the sky. The park's mountainous terrain and clear dark skies offer dramatic front-row seats for viewing the northern lights. The Aurora Sky Station is one of the best vantage points to see the aurora in the park. Join one of the expert presentations to learn about the science behind this fascinating phenomenon.

If you'd prefer to chase the lights with a curated tour, professional photographers and aurora-chasing guides at Visit Abisko lead three- to four-hour tours throughout the fall and winter. If you can, try to join the tours in fall, as this time of year offers a unique opportunity to view the lights both in the sky and reflected in the lakes and rivers, which you won't see in the winter months.

Where to stay: For cozy Nordic vibes, stay at Abisko Mountain Lodge, which also offers activities like ice climbing and snowmobile tours in winter. Guests love the excellent restaurant here, which offers Swedish specialties ranging from salmon to moose.

Nellim, Finland

Located a stone's throw from the Russian border in Finnish Lapland, this remote Arctic destination is a top-rated locale to view the northern lights due to the lack of light pollution. You'll be seriously out of the way of any built-up areas, as there's not even a paved road into Nellim. The best time to visit is between December and early April. This village is a great place to hunker down in a lodge and relax while enjoying a slice of life in the Finnish wilderness.

Where to stay: The Nellim Wilderness Hotel offers a perfect base with year-round activities, including aurora-chasing tours by car, snowmobile or on snowshoes. You can even take a sleigh ride through the snow to a campsite on Lake Inari to spot the aurora in pristine nature.

Beyond standard rooms, the Wilderness Hotel also offers glass-roofed cabins, as well as classic log cabins and bubble-shaped accommodations for two where guests can watch the dancing lights through the glass roof above your warm, cozy bed. When you're not chasing the lights, enjoy other Arctic activities like a husky safari, ice fishing, snowmobiling or a day in the snow meeting the local reindeer.

Saariselkä and Kakslauttanen, Finland

Northern lights above a snowy track through trees in the Arctic.

These two towns are around 150 miles above the Arctic Circle, with a prime location under the auroral oval, allowing as many as 200 opportunities per year to see the northern lights (weather permitting, of course). This area in Finnish Lapland is known for its stunning scenery, Sámi culture, cross-country and downhill skiing, and Urho Kekkonen National Park – one of Finland's largest.

Ski enthusiasts can roll two trips into one by hitting the slopes by day in Saariselkä and aurora spotting by night at Finland's northernmost ski resort. March into early April is the best time to view the aurora, as the Finnish Meteorological Institute notes that the weather is usually clearer at this time of year. But it's possible to see the northern lights at any time during the season from late August to early or mid-April.

Where to stay: Seven miles south of Saariselkä sits the village of Kakslauttanen, where you can book two- or four-person Glass Igloos at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. The new Kelo-Glass Igloos, which sleep up to six, mix the comforts of a log chalet with the visibility of the glass roof; enjoy a private sauna, a fireplace and more. There's also an impressive selection of year-round tours and activities at this resort, including northern lights excursions on snowmobiles or by horse-drawn carriage.

Stewart Island, New Zealand

Although they may be isolated, some far-south destinations offer the chance to see the aurora australis – or southern lights. While you might be able to see them year-round in some locations (just as with the northern lights), certain months are better for aurora viewing in the Southern Hemisphere. Stewart Island is regarded as one of the top spots to see the brilliant display in New Zealand , with 85% of the island encompassed by Rakiura National Park, so there are few people and virtually no light pollution. You can reach Stewart Island by flying in from Invercargill or taking a ferry from Bluff.

New Zealand's winter months – June to August – are the best time to see the southern lights; spring and fall are also not bad times to spot them. The brighter summer months, between December and February, make it more difficult to spot the aurora, but there's still a chance you'll catch a glimpse between midnight and 4 a.m.

Where to stay: Consider reserving a room with at Stewart Island Lodge, an intimate bed-and-breakfast. This beautiful property is just minutes by foot from the village of Oban, and the property will pick you up at the ferry terminal for your stay. Past visitors rave about the spectacular views of Halfmoon Bay and the Foveaux Strait from both the rooms and lodge terrace.

Southern Aurora Australis in Tasmania.

Tasmania sits approximately 150 miles south of mainland Australia. This mountainous island is one of relatively few places on the planet where it's theoretically possible to see the aurora 365 days a year due to its latitude, which allows for full darkness even on summer nights. The capital city of Hobart is the easiest point of entry: It's home to Tasmania's largest airport and serves as a convenient base. The city's burgeoning food and cultural scenes will also give you plenty to see and do.

From here you'll be able to reach several great viewing locations with unobstructed and open views of the sea along the southern and southeast coastlines, like Goat Bluff and Tinderbox Bay. When you're not staring at the night sky, splurge on a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter flight with Tasmanian Air Tours. Depending on your whims, your private pilot can whisk you away to soar over the sea cliffs; stop at a local winery to sample local vintages; or head south to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Port Arthur , Tasmania 's historic and most notorious prison.

Where to stay: Reserve accommodations at The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart. The historic luxury property is situated along the lively waterfront area with harbor views. Past guests admired the historic building housing the hotel and loved the heritage rooms featuring gas fireplaces for those cold Tasmanian nights.

Expedition cruise to Antarctica

The aurora australis as seen over the South Pole during austral winter.

If you're one of the lucky few people on the planet to travel to the southernmost continent on Earth, it may be pricey, but you'll have an adventure of a lifetime in Antarctica, especially if the aurora illuminates the sky. The southern lights are most visible in the winter months (between March and October), but due to weather conditions, only researchers brave the Antarctic winter – and they mostly stay indoors.

However, all hope is not lost if you seek to view the aurora australis in Antarctica. Late-season expedition cruises to this continent offered in March also bring the opportunity to view the southern lights and enjoy the end of Antarctica's fleeting summer. As the days shorten in length, you may encounter light snow across the extreme landscape and ice starting to form on the water's surface.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, humpback whale sightings are abundant, and you'll still see penguin colonies – including king and gentoo penguins. You can also keep your eyes peeled for elephant seals, leopard seals, wandering albatross and other species of birds. When night falls on clear evenings, look for the light show in the southern sky. Companies that offer March voyages include Swoop Antarctica, Atlas Ocean Voyages, Silversea Cruises , Aurora Expeditions and Hurtigruten Expeditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no one location that's widely accepted as the best place to see the northern lights. However, the strongest light displays are within what's called the "auroral oval": a rough circle around the Earth's magnetic northern pole that tends to occur around 60 to 70 degrees of latitude. The oval's exact size expands and contracts (some more southerly destinations can fall under it when the aurora is particularly strong), but there are certain locations that generally fall within the oval most of the time.

These places include:

  • Central and northern Alaska
  • Large areas of Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern Quebec in Canada
  • Southern Greenland
  • Far northern Norway, Sweden and Finland

Within these areas, it could be argued that Iceland is the best place to see the aurora as it experiences much milder temperatures than some other areas within the oval. But this is subjective, and some travelers may prefer a location like Yellowknife in Canada for a full-on, very cold Arctic experience.

The northern lights are only visible when it's dark out. Since many of the best places to see them are so far north that they experience near-constant daylight in the summer, you'll generally want to schedule a trip between late August and early April. However, within this time period, there's some debate about the best time to catch the lights. For example, the aurora tends to be more active around the September and March equinoxes due to stronger solar winds – but on the other hand, your chances of seeing them may be higher in the depths of winter, since there's longer nights and therefore a longer window in which they might appear.

In more southern locations like Minnesota, it may be possible to see the light show in the summer months, but it's still advisable to go at a time when the nights are longer. It can also be worth trying to schedule your northern lights trip when there's a new moon: While the aurora can shine through moonlight, it may be harder to see if there's a full moon.

Of course, cloudy weather can block the aurora even if you go at the right time of year. So, it may be wise to research the local weather patterns at your chosen destination to find out if there's a month where you can expect clearer skies. In many cases, though, there's a little luck involved.

These two countries can offer excellent views of the northern lights, since both are directly under the typical auroral oval. Yet there are some differences to be aware of.

In Norway, you'll need to head to the north of the country to catch the aurora: While they have been sighted in Oslo , the capital and largest city, it's too far south to be a reliable vantage point. Cities like Tromsø are popular spots, but direct flights there are only possible from some European cities, so North Americans will have to take connecting flights. On the other hand, Iceland is generally easier to reach, with direct flights to its capital, Reykjavik, from a large number of U.S. destinations (particularly from the East Coast) with no further connection required.

Since clear skies are key for seeing the northern lights, weather is another factor to consider. In November, December and March, Reykjavik has statistically slightly more frequent clear skies, while in January and February, Tromsø is a little better, but the difference isn't big: Both places have clear skies only around 25 to 30% of the time in these months. Reykjavik has slightly warmer weather, though, so between that and the ease of access, it has a slight edge over Norway for seeing the northern lights.

Alaska and Iceland are known for stellar aurora light shows, so deciding between them may depend on which destination you find more convenient and more to your tastes. In Alaska , the city of Fairbanks is considered a great spot to catch the northern lights. (They can still be seen elsewhere in the state – for example, in Anchorage, although they're not so common in more southern locations like Juneau). The advantage of Fairbanks is that you won't need a passport , yet there aren't many direct flights from the lower 48 states. Despite being an international destination, Iceland may be more accessible (particularly from the eastern U.S.), thanks to fairly regular flights to Reykjavik from numerous American cities.

Fairbanks does offer statistically better weather for aurora viewing: It has clear skies more often than Reykjavik, particularly in March when the Alaska city experiences them around 45% of the time (compared to about 25% for Reykjavik). But you'll have to be able to tolerate the cold. While temperatures in Reykjavik hover around freezing in midwinter, Fairbanks is a veritable deep freeze, with average highs around 5 degrees Fahrenheit down to lows colder than minus 5 in December.

  • Only European and Asian airports made the top 10, with none in the US even breaking the top 20.
  • Skytrax named Newark Liberty International Airport's Terminal A the best new terminal of 2024.

Insider Today

In its 25th year of judging airports based on passenger surveys, the aviation ranking website Stytrax revealed on Thursday the world's best airports for 2024.

The results are based on customer surveys collected between August 2023 and March 2024 that ask about the airport experience from curb to gate.

Of 570 airports worldwide, Doha Hamad International Airport in Qatar beat out Singapore Changi Airport in what has been a back-and-forth battle for years. Doha won in both 2021 and 2022 but took second to Changi last year.

Among the top 10 were only European and Asian airports — none in the US made the cut . In fact, the only North American airport to break the top 20 was Vancouver International Airport in Canada at number 17.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was the highest-ranking US airport on Skytrax's 2024 list but came in at only number 24, according to Skytrax. It made the top 20 last year at number 18.

New York City metro airports, including LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, made the top 100 at numbers 33 and 93, respectively. Both have seen multibillion-dollar improvement projects in recent years.

Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, meanwhile, notched an award for the best new terminal of 2024 . The Houston airport system also won an award for having the world's best airport art.

Here's a closer look at Skytrax's top 10 airports in the world for 2024.

This Gorgeous California State Park Was Just Named the Best Place for Stargazing in the U.S.

All you need to do is look up.

The 2024 eclipse may have come and gone, but it left plenty of people hungry for more astrotourism. And luckily, there are plenty of fantastic spots to stargaze across the United States, and HomeToGo has rounded up a few of the best destinations in its new Stargazing Index .

“Astrotourism has emerged as the defining travel trend of 2024 so far, with April’s total solar eclipse generating a notable uplift in demand. Leading up to the event, the search demand for vacation rentals in towns along the path of totality skyrocketed by 139 percent week-over-week on HomeToGo, with median nightly prices registering increases of 40 percent,” Eleanor Moody, a spokesperson and travel expert at HomeToGo shared in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “We predict that this piqued interest in celestial tourism will persist further into the year, and have curated HomeToGo’s 2024 Stargazing Index with a new wave of eager astro-travelers in mind.”

As Moody explained, the new index is designed to assist travelers in discovering all the darkest places to ensure the best view of the stars above.

In total, it found 24 Dark Sky communities across nine states, including California, Arizona, Texas, Indiana, Utah, Colorado, Illinois, Idaho, and Florida.

It then ranked them on five indicators, including an "under-the-radar score," which it gave based on their search volume (the lower the search volume the higher the score); an "affordability score" based on the median nightly price per person for a vacation rental on HomeToGo; an "availability score," based on the number of vacation rentals in each destination bookable on HomeToGo; a "clear sky score" based on the average number of clear days in each community; and a "solitude score," based on the size of each certified International Dark Sky Place and the area's population size. (For the latter, the lower the population density, the higher the score.)

After looking at all that data, it named Borrego Springs, California, the home of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park , to be the No. 1 astrotourism spot. "This small community is the only International Dark Sky Community in California," the findings noted. "Dedicated to protecting the night sky from light pollution, backyard stargazing parties are a daily occurrence. Visitors are invited to embrace the local natural and cultural wonders with the annual Night Fall Star Party, southern California’s prime opportunity to view the night sky with others."

It was joined by two Arizona locations: Fountain Hills at No. 2, followed by Flagstaff in third. Dripping Springs in Wimberley, Texas, and Cottonwood, Arizona, came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

‘Best Back’ In the Draft? Lloyd’s Got to Prove It

The Green Bay Packers used a third-round pick on productive USC running back Marshawn Lloyd.

  • Author: Bill Huber

In this story:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – When the Green Bay Packers selected USC running back MarShawn Lloyd in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Friday night, NFL Network draft expert Daniel Jeremiah proclaimed the Packers had just picked the best back in the draft.

Lloyd wasn’t about to disagree.

“I’m the best running back in the draft, for sure, and I think Green Bay got the best running back in the draft because they think the exact same,” Lloyd said during his Zoom call. “I’m super-confident with that. I think Daniel Jeremiah, that’s going to come up in the next few years, exactly what he says. I definitely do feel like he’s telling the truth on that part.”

For Lloyd to turn words into reality will require him doing his part.

First, he’s got to get a better handle on ball security. He fumbled three times in 2023 and eight times in three seasons.

“We felt they were correctable,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said. “It wasn't an overly big concern for us but, yeah, those are always things that jump out at you that maybe you spend extra time on.”

Of the 17 running backs in our draft rankings, none had hands smaller than Lloyd (8 3/4 inches).

“The analytics studies as far as hand size and fumbles doesn’t really track,” Gutekunst said.

Second, he’s got to show he’s a three-down player. He caught only 13 passes in 2023, though a running back can’t catch what isn’t thrown to him.

“Very comfortable in the passing game,” he said. “I feel like coach Lincoln Riley put me in really good positions. I had something like 17-plus yards a reception. I’m just being utilized in it as much as possible. I played with a team that had really good skills on the outside, a really good quarterback.”

The other part of being a three-down back is holding up in pass protection. He ran hot and cold in that regard – PFF charged him with one sack and three pressures in 32 pass-protecting opportunities. At 220 pounds and with 25 reps on the 225-pound bench press, he’s got the toolbox.

“That’s part of being a running back,” he said. “If you want to play, if you want to stay on the field, you’ve got to be able to pass protect. That’s something that comes with it, especially protecting the guy that’s getting paid the most on the field as the quarterback. I definitely feel like I’m very confident with my pass protection.”

Where there are no doubts about Lloyd is his ability to take the rock and get into the open field either by using speed or power. At 5-foot-8 3/4 and 220 pounds, he’s short but not small. His 4.46 speed in the 40 gives him breakaway ability.

Of 47 running backs with at least 100 rushing attempts, he was eighth with 3.97 yards after contact per carry, according to Pro Football Focus. Per 100 touches, he broke 25 tackles and forced 17 missed tackles, according to Sports Info Solutions. Both figures led the draft class.

“He’s a 220-pound man,” Gutekunst said. “He’s packed in a tighter frame, but like his ability to make people miss, he’s got a little juice to him and, again, he’s 220 pounds, he breaks tackles. We think his best football’s ahead of him.”

Lloyd joins aa crowded and experienced backfield. The Packers signed former All-Pro Josh Jacobs and re-signed veteran AJ Dillon. The team also is high on Emanuel Wilson.

It will be interesting to see if Lloyd can earn a role from the get-go, or if this will be a repeat of 2020, when Dillon as a second-round pick was mostly glued to the bench behind Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams.

If Lloyd really is the best back in the draft, he’ll find his way onto the field.

“It’s just a blessing, honestly,” he said. “I’m super-excited to be here as a Green Bay Packer. Definitely was a wait, but I knew I was going to get picked today. I didn’t know exactly which pick, but I’m just super-happy to be a Green Bay Packer.”
