The Best Cruise Lines for Sailing Alaska (2024)

When it comes to cruising, there’s nothing quite like sailing to Alaska. The natural landscape is rugged and untouched. Seemingly every turn of the ship is met with dramatic views. And sailing alongside massive mountains dwarfs even the biggest cruise ships.

In short, if you haven’t visited Alaska, then you don’t quite know what you’re missing. No matter how many pictures or videos you watch, they won’t do the place justice.

When it comes to visiting, there is also no better way to do so than with a cruise. Given that roads are far fewer in this part of the world, you either need to fly or travel by boat to get to most places. On a cruise, you can sail along taking in the natural surroundings while visiting multiple ports in one trip — all while also enjoying the comforts of the ship. Wake up one day and you’ll see a glacier. Then you’ll see Juneau, Skagway , Sitka , and more spots, all in one voyage.

Over the past several years, interest and the number of cruises to Alaska has risen steadily. These days dozens of ships across multiple lines provide an array of options. While any cruise can take you to Alaska, however, not all lines are the same.

That’s why we’ve rounded up the best cruise lines for an Alaskan cruise depending on several different situations that might apply to your vacation.

First, there are some important things to know about the criteria for picking the best lines.

What to Know About Picking the Right Line for Alaska

Not sure which line is for you? Don’t worry if you’re overwhelmed by options as there are a lot out there. It’s helpful to keep a few things in mind.

Most Lines Sail Similar Routes: First, one thing that makes choosing a line simpler is that you don’t have to worry much about itineraries. Not all are the same (there are some ships that sail longer routes that take you deeper into the state), but for most cruises, you’re going to see similar or the same ports. Whereas Caribbean trips may have dozens of different port options including all throughout The Bahamas, Mexico, and more, Alaskan cruises have far fewer. So whether you sail Royal Caribbean or Carnival, Norwegian or Princess, you’re likely to have a roughly similar route.

Price: For some people, money is no object. For the rest of us, it is a major factor in selecting a cruise. The good news is given the fewer ports and routes, no matter what you spend, you’re likely to see similar sights during your cruise. However, there can be significant price differences based on ship, cruise lines, and time of year. Cruises departing before June and after August see lower prices. If budget is important to you, sail during these times.

Amenities/Ships: While price can be a big difference in your cruise to Alaska, perhaps where you’ll see the biggest variance is with the amenities and ships offered. These days cruise lines have put all sorts of different ships in the area, from nearly new mega ships with all the latest bells and whistles to older ships that carry far fewer people and generally have less to do. If you want to ride go-karts on the ship while spotting whales or just want a low-key time on a smaller ship taking in the sights, you can do it all.

Best Overall: Norwegian Cruise Line

We want to be clear: There is no “wrong” cruise line to sail Alaska. Given the beauty and experience, we’d take a row boat if it meant getting to visit. That said, depending on your specific wants for your cruise, some will be a better fit for you than others. In the case of Norwegian Cruise Line, we think it’s the best all-around option.

Norwegian has put a focus on Alaska for a long time. In the 2024 season, the cruise line shows four ships sailing regularly with another (Norwegian Spirit) making visits on longer trips. Ships include bigger vessels like Bliss and Encore, as well as older and smaller ships like Jewel and Sun. So no matter if you’re wanting all the latest and greatest amenities, activities, and restaurants, or if you want the cruise to be more about the scenery, there is a ship for you. We especially like the observation areas on ships like Encore , which provide a beautiful sweeping view of the landscape while still being inside.

NCL also does a good job of offering a lot of options for cruises. The traditional 7-day round trip tour is well represented. Then there are routes that offer more time by cruising north for seven days before ending in Seward, Alaska and then offering 7-day return voyages south. There are also sailings from both Vancouver and Seattle, offering more options.

Prices also run the gamut. Make no mistake that NCL is often more expensive than other lines. However, if sailing during the shoulder season you can find deals to match any budget. That includes a 9-day sailing aboard Norwegian Jewel round trip from Seattle for $499 per person in October. A 7-day cruise aboard Norwegian Bliss can be had for as little as $549.

Bottom line is that whether the itinerary, the price, the ship, or the amenities is most important to you, NCL has something to offer any traveler to Alaska.

Best for Families: Royal Caribbean

A trip to Alaska with kids is something they won’t forget. But there are special challenges when traveling as a family. Namely, kids will want lots to do no matter how jaw-dropping the scenery is where you’re sailing.

That’s why we consider Royal Caribbean to be the best cruise line for Alaska if sailing with children.

The line sails four ships in 2024 to Alaska — Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, and Quantum of the Seas. All Royal Caribbean ships are known for pushing the envelope of what’s possible on a cruise ship, but Ovation and Quantum are newer and larger vessels that have a lot for kids to do.

This includes everything from bumper cars to Flowrider standing waves (in heated water!) to rock walls to RipCord by iFly (a skydiving simulator). There are even indoor pools available so that swimming is an option even in Alaska.

Brilliance and Radiance of the Seas are older and smaller ships but there are still kid-friendly options like putt-putt and rock walls to climb and arcades. And all ships have dedicated kids areas where children can play while being supervised and parents can enjoy the cruise on their own.

With these four ships you have options from both Vancouver and Seattle, including cruises with land tours added on.

Best Value: Princess

Is value important to you, then our top pick is Princess. The cruise line sails a large number of ships (we count seven in 2024) to Alaska. That large supply may be why the line offers some of the best prices for Alaskan cruises we’ve seen.

Remember, so much of the reason for cruising this part of the world is the ports and scenery. If that’s what is most important to you and all the lines offer similar itineraries, then it makes sense that you can save and still get a wonderful experience.

That’s not to say the cruise line is less desirable — far from it. We’ve personally sailed Princess (though not to Alaska) and would put it up against any major line in the industry. They simply offer some of the cheapest fares you’ll see.

Princess, for example, offers 7-day round trip cruises from Vancouver starting at just $398 per person (before taxes and fees) for a week in May. Even some cruises at the peak season can be had starting at less than $600 per person.

If you want the best deals, it does seem that sailing from Vancouver runs less expensive than cruising from Seattle. Just keep in mind any transportation cost getting to and from the port before you choose which port to sail from.

Best Luxury: Oceania

Want to sail in luxury? You have a lot of options. If you want a big ship experience, NCL offers The Haven, which is an exclusive and higher-end area aboard some of its ships. Other lines offer a true small-ship experience, sailing the area with anywhere from a few hundred to a little over a thousand passengers. This includes names like Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Viking, and Oceania.

In our opinion, you aren’t going to go wrong with any of these choices. We selected Oceania because we think it offers the best mix of “affordable” luxury with shorter schedules. For instance, many of the luxury cruises to Alaska offer 14-day round trips. Oceania offers round trip cruises aboard Oceania Regatta lasting from 7-12 days, offering both longer cruises and some shorter ones to match any schedule.

You also don’t have to spend as much to have the luxury experience. While not cheap, trips aboard the Regatta start around $2,200 per person for a 7-day cruise. Other luxury brands can be considerably more for a similar length trip. And for that price, you get extras that you don’t normally see on mass market lines. This includes hundreds in shore excursion credit and a beverage package.

Meanwhile, you also get a small ship experience aboard. Oceania Regatta is just 593 feet long and with 670 passengers at double occupancy. If you’ve ever wanted to visit Alaska on a cruise but were wary of mega ships, then a luxury option like Oceania could be for you.

Not to mention, Oceania Cruises' ships are stunning, even an older one like the 670-passenger Regatta. Built in 1999, it underwent a major refurbishment in 2019. Expect public spaces in sky and sea hues and an abundance of timeless teak, stone and custom tile work.

Holland America's "Time of Your Life" wave season deal features up to 40% off bookings for select sailings from summer 2024 through spring 2025; the sale ends at the end of February. The exact pricing and benefits of the package depend on the length of the cruise. 7-Day Glacier Discovery Southbound

Holland America's seven-day voyage aboard Noordam includes an afternoon cruising in Hubbard Glacier and a full day of sailing through picturesque Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. The advertised fares on the Princess Cruises website are for the line's MedallionClass experience, which includes dining at the complimentary onboard restaurants, entertainment on the ship, fitness facilities, and the youth and teen clubs. You can add optional upgrades, such as a beverage package, specialty dining, shore excursions and Wi-Fi access, either individually or with a Princess Plus or Princess Premier package.

7-Day Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay (Northbound)

Princess' seven-day itinerary aboard Grand Princess features the lowest available fare for the line's 2024 Alaska season. The itinerary starts with a relaxing sea day, followed by stops in three ports of call in Alaska: Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. You'll also have two days of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord before disembarking in Whittier, near Anchorage .

The southbound voyage (which is the reverse itinerary) on Grand Princess departs May 15, 2024, from Anchorage and also starts at $398 per person. Or, you can sail that southbound itinerary on Sapphire Princess on May 18, 2024, for the same price.

In 2025, you can book this itinerary on Caribbean Princess for as low as $467 per person, embarking on May 10, 2025.

7-Day Inside Passage (Roundtrip Vancouver)

This shoulder season sailing in September is available on Grand Princess. The round-trip voyage from Vancouver features two days at sea; one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier; and stops in the coastal towns of Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. While on the ship, spend warmer days outdoors relaxing at The Sanctuary, an adults-only venue. It also makes a late afternoon stop in Victoria, British Columbia , where you can plan to have dinner that evening. You'll have two days at sea for relaxing or enjoying all the activities and attractions on the ship, including the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, robotic bartenders and live performances with aerial entertainers. Princess Cruises: 5-Day Alaska Sampler

If you want to sail with Princess for one extra day, consider booking the five-day sampler cruise sailing round-trip from Vancouver. This early season itinerary aboard Caribbean Princess calls on Sitka and Ketchikan, offering more time ashore to explore these two popular coastal towns along Alaska's Inside Passage. Guests will also have two sea days to enjoy activities and dining experiences on the ship.

How to find the best Alaska cruise deals

Book during wave season.

As previously mentioned, you can take advantage of some of the best deals of the year during wave season. Promotions offered during wave season include lower cruise fares, reduced deposits and onboard credits. You can also find special rates (or free fares) for the third and fourth guests in the same room, making this the perfect time to book a family cruise .

In addition, look for discounts on higher-level staterooms and suites, or even accommodations in exclusive areas of the ship, such as The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line or The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. These private spaces offer swanky extras like luxurious accommodations, all-inclusive pricing , butler service, a team of attendants and concierge service, as well as private restaurants, lounges and pools. With lower pricing, wave season may be the best time to splurge on a cruise vacation in one of these upscale enclaves.

Promotional pricing beyond wave season

If you miss booking your cruise during wave season, don't panic. Many lines offer special pricing and flash sales throughout the year and advertise lower fares for voyages during Alaska's shoulder seasons, which fall in May and September.

"You will always find the more affordable Alaska cruises toward the beginning and end of the season. This year, the Alaska cruise season begins in April and continues through October," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic. She adds, "The challenge with shoulder season Alaska cruises is that the weather might not be the best – it can snow in Alaska in April and early May – and in the fall, the nights will be longer (although, there is a chance you might see northern lights )."

In addition to giving up the warmer summer weather (and possibly having snow), you may also miss some optimal wildlife viewing opportunities if you cruise early or late in the season. For example, the peak time for bear-watching excursions extends from mid-June to mid-August, which falls during the height of the Alaska cruise season in July and August.

Initially, smaller and older ships  sailed to Alaska , while the newer vessels cruised the Caribbean. However, as Alaska rises in popularity, cruise lines are beginning to add larger ships. 

For instance, the 5,000-passenger RCI Ovation of the Seas began sailing to Alaska in 2019. But is a larger ship better?

Norwegian Cruise Line docks its mega-ships, The Bliss and Norwegian Encore, in Ward Cove, outside of Ketchikan. So, if you want to explore this port, you’ll have a 7-mile journey to get to town.

In general, some areas like Tracy Arm Fjord can only accommodate smaller vessels. So, if you choose to sail a mega-ship, chances are, you’ll be navigating a less popular itinerary or not sailing a fjord or glacier-filled bay. 

When it comes to planning an Alaskan cruise, I’m a fan of small and mid-sized ships because they provide a more intimate experience.

I have cruised to Alaska multiple times and sailed on ships with 1,400 to 5,000 passengers. For me, the best cruise ship to Alaska is smaller is size, has long port days, and an indoor pool.

While vessels carrying fewer passengers might have sparse activities and fewer entertainment choices, they win in the itinerary department. You might want to forego the larger one when selecting the best Alaskan cruise.

However, a mega-ship might be the best choice if you’re cruising to Alaska with a family. There’s no room for boredom on these cruising giants with climbing walls, race car tracks, laser tag, and much more. Plus, you’ll have more entertainment options.

It’s important to know that the mega-ships sail from the Seattle cruise port. The Vancouver cruise port has difficulty accommodating the largest ships as they can’t clear the Lionsgate Bridge.

While the Bliss and Quantum-class ships have visited Vancouver, they must enter and exit the harbor at low tide. I took an Alaska cruise on the Quantum, which starting in Vancouver, but ended in Seattle. Since it needed to leave at low tide, I didn’t witness the cruise under the bridge at 3:30 am.

For some, the best cruise to Alaska in 2024 comes down to a preferred embarkation port. Alaska itineraries are available from Seattle , San Francisco , and Vancouver. Most of the San Francisco routes are a 10-day round trip.

Norwegian, Holland America, Carnival, Princess, Celebrity, Oceania, and Royal Caribbean are the regular cruise lines that sail from Seattle. Most of these Alaska cruises are seven days and offer a roundtrip itinerary. 

However, there are also 9-, 10- and 11-day itineraries. Although there are some advertised 5-day cruises to Alaska, they stop in two ports, Ketchikan and Juneau.

Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Regent, Disney, Cunard, Viking, Silversea, Windstar, and Seabourn, have ships sailing from the Vancouver cruise port. 

The significant difference between Vancouver embarkations is that some offer a one-way cruise. Vancouver cruise tend to offer longer times in port since they are closer to Alaska.

Should you reside in Vancouver, Seattle, or California, choosing a company that sails from your local port makes sense.

The Ovation of the Seas, Norwegian Bliss, and Encore are recommended if your kids aren’t into Disney.

Also, if your children like to swim, be sure to choose a vessel with an indoor pool in addition to the one on the pool deck.

Best Budget-Friendly Cruises

When comparing cruise lines that go to Alaska, you might get sticker shock as a first-time cruiser. Not only are the cruises more expensive than in other areas, but the shore excursions also come at a high cost.

To save money for those costly port tours, sail in the shoulder season and pick an older vessel. Traveling to Alaska in May or September offers lower prices, but you’ll also experience colder weather.

The Grand Princess, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Spirit, Carnival Spirit, and Holland’s Volendam offer lower pricing. 

While you’ll cruise on an older vessel, the views of Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay National Park will remain the same.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Miracle gives the option to sail roundtrip from California. While these itineraries are a bit longer at ten days, you’ll cruise Alaska without needing an airline ticket.

Best Alaska Itineraries

When comparing an itinerary of Hubbard Glacier to Glacier Bay National Park, it’s no secret that most prefer the latter. If you plan to visit Alaska once and want to see Glacier Bay, choose a cruise line that sails there.

Princess Cruises, Holland America, and Norwegian cruise to the UNESCO park (Glacier Bay). Their guests can choose to embark in either Seattle or Vancouver, Canada. Cunard also includes the national park but cruises from Vancouver. You can also find smaller ships through luxury cruise lines.

From Vancouver, you can also choose to cruise return or one way. These 7-day cruises end in Whittier or Seward, not far from Anchorage.

The Norwegian Jewel, Majestic Princess, Grand Princess, Sapphire Princess, Holland Nieuw Amsterdam, and Holland Noordam provide one-way sailings. 

These itineraries include Glacier Bay and one other glacier or fjord. So, you can see either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord too.

So, should you have the time, consider a back-to-back cruise of fourteen days. This itinerary includes Glacier Bay National Park twice, College Fjord, and Hubbard Glacier. I have done the  14-day back-to-back with Princess, and it’s genuinely fantastic.

Even after all those glacier sightings, I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of viewing Alaska’s spectacular scenery. If you’re looking for the ultimate Alaska glacier viewing experience, consider the 14-day round trip.

Cunard, unknown to many cruisers, offers longer itineraries to both Hubbard and Glacier Bay. Their 10 to 11-day itineraries have more port days and don’t repeat a single stop. 

Be sure to compare port times. Generally, cruises from Vancouver have longer days in port. Some Seattle itineraries only allow for half-days in Alaska towns.

Best Traditional Cruises

Princess, Holland America, and Celebrity Cruises provide what you expect of Alaska, excellent service, amenities, and itineraries. 

Their cruises focus on the destination with onboard naturalists, the “best of Alaska” food choices, and talks on ports, wildlife, and scenery.

While Princess might be considered more family-friendly, the others are more adult-focused choices. All lines have fewer children as families lean towards mega-ships with endless onboard activities.

Best Ultra-Luxury

You can’t beat the six-star rating on the Seabourn Odyssey for a luxury cruise to Alaska. The all-suite vessel provides luxury accommodations with marble bathrooms, double vanities, and luxury linens.

The all-inclusive cruises mean there are no gratuities, you receive complimentary wine and alcohol, and unlimited WiFi. 

Stateroom mini-bars are always stocked, and guests can eat at all restaurants without an additional fee. With almost a one-to-one staff-to-passenger ratio, guests can get what they need whenever they require it.

The Seabourn Odyssey also includes cruising in the Misty Fjords National Monument.

Best Extended Alaska Cruises

Most Alaska itineraries sail for seven days, either round trip or one-way. Traditionally, if you wanted to vacation longer, you could choose a cruise and land tour or book a back-to-back of two 7-day cruises. Although, back-to-back cruises repeat the same ports.

However, some lines offer up to 15-day routes with unique ports and more glacier sightings.

Seabourn has many 14-day itineraries. Their port-intensive cruise features some unique ports of call. If you cruise on luxury cruise lines, you’re more likely to stop at unusual ports like Kodiak Island, and Dutch Harbor.

So, if you prefer to get off the beaten path, you can explore Inian Islands, Wrangell, Haines, Prince Rupert, and Alert Bay, Canada.

The Seabourn Odyssey also includes cruising in Misty Fjords National Monument.

Best Expedition Cruises

If you prefer a tiny ship or expedition-style cruise and have an unlimited budget, consider booking with Uncruise or National Geographic.

Uncruise adventures aren’t about seeing Alaska from the ship but immersing yourself in the experience. So, guests take to the waters in kayaks and explore the land on day hikes. 

Using a zodiac, you feel the waterfall’s mist, see harbor seals up close, and admire the towering ice of a glacier’s terminus. If you’re daring enough, complete your trip with a polar bear plunge.

National Geographic expedition cruises accommodate up to 100 guests on voyages from 6 to 15 days. Like Uncruise, their vessels carry kayaks and zodiacs, allowing guests to get closer to the action.

While National Geographic cruises to Glacier Bay, their itineraries are fluid. So, they can adapt their days to whatever arises at the moment.

Best Alaskan Cruises To Prevent Seasickness

It’s no secret that you can hit rough seas when cruising to Alaska. If you suffer from seasickness, sailing outside of shoulder season might reduce your risk.

Itineraries from and to Vancouver generally offer the calmest waters as the ships cruise the inside passage.

Should you choose an itinerary that stops in Sitka, you could experience rough seas. Since Sitka sits on the outside of Baranof Island, ships cruising there have no protection from the ocean currents.

Newer vessels have the latest technology with great stabilizers. However, whichever ship you choose, book a cabin mid-ship and lower to the water for the calmest ride.

Final Thoughts

There are many choices when selecting from best cruise lines for Alaska to suit your needs. Prioritize your list and decide what’s most important. The best cruises to Alaska may come down to glacier sightings, ports of call, family-friendly, or maybe your budget?

This is the BEST site I have found! I honestly did not realize the Discovery Princess does not have any indoor pools. We booked with them because we didn't need all the adrenaline activities on RC ships...didn't care for the theater production on Encore or no bath tubs in the cabins (arthritis some appreciate a private soak vs a public deck hot tub) and Disney didn't go from Seattle. I'm thinking of either cancelling or changing ships within the line. I feel like an indoor pool is an absolute must for an Alaska cruise!

This is a great article. Do you know if there are any shorter cruises, 5 - 6 days, that begin in one port and end in another? My husband and I are going in June 2024 but we will only have 2 weeks and we want to do a cruise but also do some things on our own.

The Best Time to Cruise to Alaska in 2024

A laska's astounding beauty and vast wilderness are unlike any other destination in the U.S. – and even in the world. While you can plan land-based trips to the state, many of Alaska's majestic snowcapped mountains, pristine forests, glacial waterways and abundant wildlife are in remote locations, only reachable by plane or by boat. That's just one of the many reasons why Alaska is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world.

If you're ready to stop dreaming and start planning a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land, here are tips on the best times to cruise Alaska.

Best Overall Time: Shoulder Seasons

If you want to score a deal and have fewer crowds, travel during the shoulder seasons: May and September. In these months, cruise fares are typically lower and ships are not as full, offering more cabin availability. However, with changes in the global climate bringing more moderate temperatures to Alaska, and the cruise season now extending into April and October, cruisers can also expect to find deals in April and October. There will be fewer sailings to choose from, but you may find lower pricing and avoid the peak-season crowds on the ship and in the ports.

In addition, select shore excursions may be available at a discount in the spring and fall. If you're planning on exploring Alaska on your own before or after your cruise, you'll also find cheaper hotel rates at the beginning or end of the cruise season.

Alaska's weather can change dramatically, especially the further north you go, no matter the month or season. While the weather may not be as predictable in April as in the middle of summer, Alaska can be beautiful in springtime with temperatures in the mid-40s, according to Tyler Hickman, senior vice president of Icy Strait Point, an Alaska Native-owned port in Hoonah and a port of call in Southeast Alaska. Hickman says there are long stretches of sunny days and crisp, clear evenings, offering the opportunity for late-season viewing of the northern lights . He also adds that April is one of the favorite times of year for local Alaskans.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska in April, Norwegian Cruise Line has a few options, including weekly sailings on Norwegian Bliss beginning April 6. The line also offers Alaska itineraries through the end of October. Other lines sailing the extended season in Alaska in late April include Princess Cruises , Holland America Line , Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise Line , UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions.

If you prefer to travel in the fall, early October temperatures are usually in the 50s, while the end of the month brings snow in the higher elevations. The days are longer and there are no crowds, so it may be an ideal time to visit if you're not interested in the summer outdoor experiences. Norwegian, Holland America and Seabourn Cruise Line offer sailings in October.

Best Time for Warmer Weather

If you'd prefer warmer weather for your cruise, the summer season in Alaska runs from mid-May to mid-September. During that period, daytime temperatures typically range from 60 to 80 degrees, though they can drop into the 40s overnight. You can expect to have between 16 to 24 hours of daylight in the warmer season. May is considered the driest month, with around a 25% chance of precipitation, but the rain becomes more frequent throughout the summer.

Alaska.org, a website run by local Alaskans that provides travel information and recommendations, advises that the best time to visit in summer is from June 15 to July 15. This 30-day period is regarded as the peak season for warm, dry weather – and it's the perfect time for outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, fishing and hiking. If you want to experience the most "midnight sun," plan to cruise a few weeks before or after the summer solstice – the longest day of the year – which falls on June 20 in 2024.

Come September, the days are generally shorter, rainier and cooler – but not always. You might get lucky with some unseasonably warm days amid the beautiful fall foliage ; as a bonus, September also means no bugs and fewer crowds.

If you have school-age children, you'll probably need to travel midsummer, during peak season. However, if you're flexible on dates, there's really no bad time to visit this magical destination. Mountain peaks shrouded in clouds or misty days cruising Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in late April are as beautiful as sunny days hiking through Tongass National Forest or whale watching on an excursion out of Icy Strait Point in July.

Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

According to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, one of the top destinations on the Inside Passage itinerary, wildlife viewing is possible year-round, especially if you have your binoculars at hand. When you're not watching for turquoise ice calving in the bay from the glaciers, you might see humpback whales as long as 65 feet or black and brown bears up to 10 feet tall – as well as orcas, harbor and Dall's porpoises, sea otters, harbor seals, mountain goats, sea lions, seabirds, and bald eagles soaring overhead. And that's just what you can view from the ship.

During cruises through the park, rangers board the ships to offer commentary and information about the marine and terrestrial wildlife. They also help spot whales or other animals along the way. One of the highlights while cruising slowly through the park is to go outside on the bow of the ship – or even out onto your veranda – to listen to the incredible silence of this otherworldly place. You may hear nothing at all, or perhaps you'll be treated to the sounds of birds in the distance or the swoosh from a whale's blowhole before it dives down below the water's surface.

It's possible to view certain animals and marine life throughout the year, according to Hickman. "Whale sightings are consistent from May through September, with fewer occurring in April and October as they migrate from or to Hawaii for the winter," he says, adding: "Even on a foggy day when you can't see the whales, you can still hear them and feel their presence – and that's almost as incredible as seeing them from a ship or along the coastline."

If you're interested in spotting brown bears, here is Hickman's advice: "Bear sightings in the spring will depend on the snowpack and when they are leaving hibernation. This year we had very good bear viewing along the Spasski River starting in May when the coastal brown bears emerged from hibernation."

He adds, "They feed on the grass of the valley and eat skunk cabbage roots in May and early June. As the berries start to emerge in June, it holds many of the same bears, and as we get into mid-July, the salmon start heading upstream. There is a constant food source from May through September at Spasski. Many of the other bear viewing areas do not have the same features we have, and it leads to people thinking that bears are only around when fish are in the rivers."

Chichagof Island – the location of Hoonah and Icy Strait Point – was given the nickname "Bear Island" by National Geographic. The island boasts one to two brown bears per square mile, making it one of the largest brown bear populations in the world. Hickman says you're nearly guaranteed to see bears on one of Icy Strait Point's bear-watching tours. Icy Point Strait also offers whale watching adventures and other treks into the wilderness.

Alaska.org points to May through September as the best time for wildlife viewing, though you can spot some animals year-round, like moose or orcas. The website also advises that fly-in bear viewing starts in May but is at its best in July.

Best Time for Salmon Fishing

If you are an avid angler – or just want to watch the bears fish for their supper – then visit Alaska during the peak salmon runs, from May to September. King salmon season begins in May and goes through the end of July. The silver salmon run lasts from July up until the end of November. Red salmon are available between mid-June and mid-August, while you can catch pink and chum salmon in the brief window from mid-July to mid-August.

If you prefer halibut or just want to get out on the ocean, the best time for this wild Pacific species is from May to September. You can also seek out many other river and ocean species, such as rainbow trout, arctic char and northern pike. Cruise lines offer fishing excursions, or you can arrange for a private or group charter in an Alaskan town like Ketchikan.

If you want to see brown bears during the salmon run, book a bear-viewing excursion in one of the ports, such as Icy Strait Point. Or, extend your trip by combining a visit to Katmai National Park and Preserve and the renowned Brooks River with a stay at Brooks Lodge. Brooks Falls is the site for iconic photos of bears catching salmon that are jumping over the falls, and you may be able to view the bears feasting in salmon season when the property is open, from June through mid-September. The lodge is accessible by floatplane from King Salmon. You can also add a flyover tour during your stay to see the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, an area in southern Alaska transformed by ash from the 1912 Novarupta-Katmai volcanic eruption.

Best Time for the Northern Lights

Aurora season – the best time to see the northern lights in Alaska – runs from mid-August to mid-April. While some passengers cruising the Inside Passage may catch a glimpse of the phenomenon in late summer and early fall, it's not guaranteed. As southeast Alaska typically has more precipitation and clouds since it's a temperate rainforest, you likely won't find optimal conditions for aurora viewing here.

Your chances to see the lights are better the further north you go, so you may want to look at booking a cruisetour: a land and sea package that's usually offered by some of the major cruise lines from May through September. These combined trips generally include the cruise, overnight accommodations in lodges, railway journeys and motorcoach travel between destinations.

With these tours, you'll be able to visit the vast landscape of Alaska, where you can explore cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks or spend time in Denali National Park and Preserve – and you'll have a better chance to view the northern lights. Lines that offer cruisetours include Norwegian, Celebrity Cruises , Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean.

Since 2024 is projected to be one of the best years to view the aurora borealis in Alaska, you might want to extend your trip to venture above the Arctic Circle or into Alaska's interior for a prime viewing opportunity. Fairbanks and the Arctic region are under the auroral oval, which is where the northern lights activity is concentrated. Best Time for Shore Excursions

Some of the excursions offered on an Alaskan cruise may be the most expensive tours you've seen on a ship, but they're also probably some of the coolest things you've ever thought about doing while on vacation.

Note that the probability of a tour being canceled for weather is almost the same for all tours offered between April and October, as the weather in Alaska can be unpredictable. Some of the more extreme tours, however, may not be available early or late in the season. If you want the best chance for optimal weather, consider the advice from Alaska.org and book your cruise between mid-June and mid-July.

If you're looking at splurging on a bucket list adventure while in Skagway – like Alaska Shore Tours' flightseeing helicopter adventure, which includes a dog-sledding experience on a glacier – you should check to make sure it's available the month you'll be cruising. This particular tour may not be open for booking before May or after September due to the conditions for the sled dogs.

Another over-the-top excursion dependent on optimal weather conditions is the Heli-Hike and Rail Adventure that begins in Skagway. This tour includes a helicopter ride from town that flies over glaciers and mountains, then drops you off for a roughly 5-mile guided hike to view Laughton Glacier and learn about the natural history of the area. After the hike, you'll board the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad at Glacier Station for the scenic journey through the mountains back to Skagway.

If you're interested in the Misty Fjords Flightseeing tour in Ketchikan, this thrilling ride is also best on a clear day. This Alaskan bush plane tour soars over the Misty Fjords National Monument, which has more than 2 million acres of pristine lakes, waterfalls, ancient forests and snowcapped mountains.

Tours that include activities like mountain climbing or navigating suspension bridges might also be best when done on a sunny day. The prime time for wildlife viewing and fishing, as mentioned above, will depend on what animals you're interested in seeing and which species of fish you want to catch.

The ship's excursion desk, local guides or tour providers can offer the best advice on how to plan your activities. No matter which tours you opt to take, be prepared for the ever-changing weather patterns by wearing layers – and make sure to bring a waterproof rain jacket. Before booking, you should check the individual tour operator's cancellation and refund policy.

The Bottom Line

If you're flexible as to when you can travel to Alaska, you may be able to take advantage of lower pricing, travel incentives and added perks in the shoulder seasons – and you'll have fewer crowds than in the busy summer months.

If your goal is to view wildlife, then most of the cruise season, especially from May to September, will offer ample opportunities to see bears, humpbacks whales, bald eagles and other amazing animals – depending on the itinerary and excursions you choose. You'll also be able to catch Alaska's prized salmon throughout much of the cruise season.

And if extreme adventures are going to be the highlight of your vacation, then be sure to check with the tour providers to make sure your top picks are offered when you're planning to travel. Not all tour providers operate the full seven months of the season.

No matter when you decide to visit, a cruise to The Great Land will be one of the most memorable vacations of your lifetime.

Travel | Alaska is ready for another record-breaking cruise season

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024.

The most-visited Alaskan port, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Denali-sized jump of 30 percent compared to pre-pandemic 2019.

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust, with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which docked in rustic Skagway last week. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line  has nearly 100 more after that.

Two competing companies have staked out even larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush. Holland America Line is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises. And at the top of the totem pole is Princess Cruises , which is celebrating its 55th year in these waters with seven premium ships sharing 158 departures.

Not counting grand voyages with itineraries so rich they make a visit to Alaska seem more like a pit stop, this cruise season will see more than 800 trips of mostly seven to 10 days starting or ending on this side of the Pacific. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparalleled wilderness, wildlife and native culture. In other words, bucket list stuff.

“Alaska is one of those places that draws you in and sets the hook right away,” said Kristi Switzer, destination marketing manager for Travel Juneau. “Visitors come for the otherworldly experience of being in the presence of glaciers and fjords, seeing whales and bears and finding the balance of Alaska Native cultural heritage with the rustic sophistication found in the capital city.”

Although Switzer recommends visits lasting several days instead of several hours, the city’s destination evangelist hopes that a partial day in Juneau and each major Alaskan cruise port will have 1.5 million passengers wanting more.

“This magical corner of the world has so much to offer beyond being a checkmark on people’s bucket lists,” she said.

Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises ’ popular Edge class will make its Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines.

Edge will be joined by a pair of fleet mates for the season, albeit Summit’s seven-day roundtrips are turnarounds out of Anchorage or Vancouver, and Solstice’s weeklong jaunts are solely based in the British Columbian seaport. Celebrity, a premier-category cruise line has 57 departures to Alaska scheduled this year.

The other new recruit is Silver Nova, the youngest Silversea Cruises  ship in the luxury fleet to ever service Alaska. Capped at 728 guests, Silver Nova was launched last year and has the goods to do justice to a dreamlike place that captures the imagination of wilderness lovers and history buffs.

“Silver Nova is the ideal ship for Alaska cruising,” said company spokesman Brad Ball. “Her innovative design, which incorporates an unprecedented 4,000 square meters of glass, immerses guests into the incredible scenery of Alaska from virtually all venues and suites, with far-reaching views at every turn.”

The ship’s reimagined pool deck, which overlooks the water on her starboard side, and all-new outdoor venues — the Dusk Bar and the Marquee — allows unique openness to view spectacular Alaskan glaciers and wildlife. Those who want to experience an older and smaller Evolution-class Silversea vessel can book the Silver Muse, which also will sail mostly seven- to 14-day trips between Anchorage and Vancouver.

Because nearly every Alaskan cruise includes the staples — Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Inside Passage and Denali with a land add-on — some cruise lines like to shake things up with unique itineraries.

Holland America has a roundtrip that makes it easy to visit the 49th and 50th states without a long flight. A new “Glaciers & Volcanos: Alaska to Hawaii” cruise, part of the premium line’s Legendary Voyages collection of journeys from 25 to 59 days, departs on Aug. 31 from Seattle or Sept. 1 from Vancouver aboard the 1,916-passenger Westerdam. The nearly four-weeklong itinerary includes seldomly visited Kodiak and Dutch Harbor before heading down to the tropics to make four calls to three Hawaiian islands.

Seabourn  strives to offer a more tasteful Alaskan cruise and not only because it’s an ultra-luxury cruise line. “Caviar on the Ice” is a savory and swanky soiree on every Alaskan voyage, and when the 450-passenger Odyssey is in Sitka, a town originally built by Russian traders in the early 1800s, Seabourn guests can enjoy a culinary adventure that includes a scenic drive to a taproom for a sampling of local brews and a few eateries to try Siberian-rooted pelmeni dumplings and a hot dog made with caribou that the locals call “reindeer dawgs.” Sorry, vegetarians and friends of Santa, but Blitzen on a bun is da bomb.

Disney Cruise Line  is sending its 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder out of Vancouver for 15 week-long roundtrips, one five-day spin leaving on July 24 and an extended nine-day voyage on July 15.

Other cruise lines showing passengers a whale of a time in Alaska include Crystal, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Viking.
