You're probably planning to come to Orlando  to join the crowds at the theme parks, but when is the best time to do that? And what else is happening in Orlando itself, a city of lovely tree-lined neighborhoods with a rich performing arts scene? From high season to low, here's a monthly guide to what you can expect through the year in Orlando, including the best events at the theme parks and in the city.

Editor's note: during  COVID-19  there may be additional travel restrictions.  Check the latest guidance in Florida  before planning a trip, and always follow local government health advice. All events are subject to change.

High season: March to April and June to August

Best time for festival-goers

March to April is peak tourism season thanks to spring breakers. The summer is also one of Orlando's busiest times, full of holiday crowds, and lots of festivals. It's hot and humid, with temperatures often above 90°F (32°C).

Shoulder season: May, September to November

Best time for fewer crowds

Crowds thin and prices drop in May after the spring break. The masses also diminish after Labor Day (first Monday in September), except for Halloween festivities. Lodging prices plummet, but the summer sizzle fades.

Low season: December to February

Best time for budget travelers

Christmas through early January draws massive theme-park crowds. Otherwise, this is low-season, with plenty of accommodation bargains. Temperatures can dip below freezing, although this is rare.

Crowds still flock to the theme parks in early January, but beyond that, it's fairly quiet. Temperatures are cooler, with a high of around 72ºF (22ºC). Accommodations are usually cheaper mid-January onwards, although it's always worth booking ahead, no matter what time of year you visit. Key events: Martin Luther King, Jr Day,  Walt Disney World Marathon , Zora Festival .

Theme parks are less crowded, and temperatures are pleasant, reaching 75ºF (24ºC). Head north to  Blue Spring State Park where manatees may be spotted in the winter months and into the early spring. Whether it falls in late February or early March, Fat Tuesday inspires parties statewide. Key events: Presidents Day, Mardi Gras,  Seaworld Seven Seas Food Festival , Super Block Party .

Throughout March to mid-April, American colleges release students for one-week spring breaks. While they are mainly drawn to the beaches, Orlando and the theme parks will also start to fill up with visitors. Modest temps and dry weather make for an ideal time to hike and camp. Key events: St Patrick's Day Street Party, Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival , Orlando Whiskey Festival .

Expect the sky to be blue and the sun to be shining. Spring break crowds are still hitting the theme parks until around mid-April, but the rest of Orlando and around may not be all that busy. The Florida Film Festival held in Winter Park celebrates independent films and is fast becoming one of the largest festivals in the southeast.  Key events: Florida Film Festival , Fiesta in the Park .

There are fewer crowds, but it's starting to get hot in May, and you can expect highs of 88ºF (31ºC) with the occasional brief rain shower. Look out for Cinco de Mayo street parties in downtown. Key events: Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day,  International Fringe Festival , Caribbean Food and Music Festival .

A large silver-grey sphere is lit up with purple and gold lights against the night sky

Summer holiday crowds are here! Get in early at the theme parks, and try to stay cool in the heat. Starting on the first Saturday of June and going for a week, around 170,000 people – especially members of the LGBTIQ+ community – descend on the Magic Kingdom and other Orlando theme parks, hotels and clubs. Bite30, Orlando's "restaurant week" starts in June and runs for two months.  Key events: Gay Days , Bite30 .

Schools are out, the theme parks are packed with people, and the weather is hot and humid. There will be fireworks and laser shows at the parks to mark July 4. Key events:  Independence Day.

Floridians do nothing but crank the A/C inside while foolish tourists swelter and burn at the theme parks – and run from afternoon thundershowers. Key events:  Megacon Orlando , Electric Ocean at SeaWorld .

Weather becomes just a little milder and it's quieter at the theme parks; look for shoulder season deals in many resorts. Theme parks are starting to run Halloween events this month. This is also the peak of hurricane season, which runs June through November. Travelers should take all hurricane alerts, warnings and evacuation orders seriously Key events: Labor Day,  Epcot International Food & Wine Festival , Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party .

Four people dressed with rainbow-colored accessories smile for the camera

October marks the end of the hurricane season. Halloween events are in full swing at the theme parks, often continuing into early November. Look out for goblins, monsters and mummies all around. Key events: Columbus Day, Orlando Come out with Pride ,  Winter Park Autumn Arts Festival , Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios .

Tourism hits a spike for a week around Thanksgiving, and temperatures are better for hiking and camping. This is also the start of the region's manatee season (November to March) when they migrate into the warmer waters of Florida's freshwater estuaries, rivers and springs. Some Christmas events start running at the theme parks. Key events:  Veterans Day, Thanksgiving,  Orlando Chili Cook-off .

The few weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas mark a quiet period at the theme parks, but there are still plenty of special Christmas-themed events on the go. The temperatures are more manageable, around 75ºF (24ºC). Key events: Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party , Christmas Day.

The Best Times to Go to Disney World for Fewer Crowds and Beautiful Weather

Planning a Disney vacation? Here are the best times to visit Walt Disney World.

best time of year to visit orlando theme parks

Mariah Tyler

There’s always a reason to visit the "Most Magical Place on Earth," Walt Disney World. Deciding exactly when to go depends on what matters most to you. Looking to spot the famous Mickey pumpkins that line Main Street, U.S.A., during Halloween season? How about visiting when the temperatures are at their coolest? These factors and many more can affect your decision about when to plan a Disney trip, but if you want general guidelines, consider this overview.

  • High Seasons: March to April and June to August
  • Shoulder Seasons: December to February, plus the month of May
  • Low Season: September to November

Whether traveling with a group of friends or your family, here are the best times to go to Disney World.

Best Times to Visit Disney World for Smaller Crowds

A Walt Disney World vacation involves navigating a variety of details from booking theme park tickets and dining reservations to deciding which rides to try when. The last thing you want to add to that list is heavy crowds.

While Disney parks consistently draw guests year round, there are a few times to visit that are typically less crowded. In the winter, any date outside of the busy weeks of Christmas and New Year's can be fairly quiet. A trip at this time of year also has the added bonus of cooler temperatures — or, to superfans, "Spirit Jersey weather." Disney World's least busy month, though, is almost always September. Crowds begin to thin out as school breaks wind down in August, and once Labor Day is over, the resort is usually as close to empty as it ever gets. Disney World used to remain uncrowded throughout the fall, but the growing popularity of Disney's Halloween offerings does mean that October is increasingly busy.

Best Times to Visit Disney World for Good Weather

There's a reason they call Florida the Sunshine State. The Orlando region can see more than 300 days of sun each year, making for ideal vacation weather almost year-round. Though July and August are risky given their occasional triple-digit temperatures, you can usually expect pleasant conditions in Disney World no matter when you visit.

Temperatures are at their coolest — often as low as 50 degrees — in January. (Yes, it can get chilly in Florida!) But while this may limit some activities, like visiting your resort’s pool or one of Disney's water parks, it does make for a more comfortable time in the theme parks. The winter months are also typically low in precipitation, so chances are you'll avoid the afternoon thunderstorms common in Florida summers — along with the need for pricey ponchos and umbrellas. To take advantage of this mild winter weather, visit between January and March.

Best Times to Visit Disney World for Lower Prices

The most important piece of any Disney vacation is theme park tickets. Disney World uses a dynamic ticket pricing system , meaning park ticket prices are tiered and will cost less during slower times. One-day, one-park admission starts at $109 but can increase significantly from there, especially if you're visiting on a holiday or busy weekend. A visit on Christmas Day, for instance, will set you back $159 per ticket.

Off-peak times fall around January, February, September, and early November. Discounts on vacation packages booked directly through Disney (which combine park tickets and hotel stays ) can be found year-round, though they're most common at these less-crowded times. The same tends to apply for deals on accommodations and airfare.

Best Times for Adults to Visit Disney World

Walt Disney World can be an adult’s playground all year round, with standout dining and a host of experiences specifically catered to grown-up guests . One of the best times for adults to visit, though, is late summer and early fall, when summer-break crowds give way to (relatively) uncrowded autumn bliss. This time of year also coincides with Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival . At the park's longest-running and largest festival, you can nibble on globally inspired bites from dozens of outdoor kitchens. As the sun sets, enjoy concerts from national acts as part of the Eat to the Beat concert series, included in admission.

One of Disney's most underrated festivals, the Epcot International Festival of the Arts, is also not to be missed. Celebrating culinary, performing, and visual arts, this falls during one of the slowest points of the year, typically mid-January through February. While more intimate than Food & Wine, it delivers standout eats and entertainment, plus cooler temperatures for those who dislike the heat.

Best Times to Visit Disney World for Families

Holidays at Disney are truly magical. While you may have to deal with more crowds than usual, the reward is a whimsical transformation of the parks and numerous limited-time offerings — from incredible decor to delicious seasonal foods. Kids will also love Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, the after-hours special events that take over Magic Kingdom park in the final months of each year. Tickets for these parties follow a dynamic pricing system just like standard park admission does, so if you want to attend, plan your visit outside of each holiday's peak dates. While attending a Halloween party in August or a Christmas party in November may seem odd, families can enjoy hefty savings by embracing the festive spirit at unorthodox times.

Summer is ideal if your crew prefers to spend mornings on the rides and afternoons by the pool. Disney’s deluxe resorts — like Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa — offer the most elaborate pool complexes, complete with slides and poolside lounges. If taking full advantage of your resort’s amenities is a priority, a summertime stay may give you the best experience, despite its higher price tag.

Worst Times to Visit Disney World

A summertime Disney trip is a rite of passage for many families, but various factors can make the season less than ideal. The weather is arguably at its worst this time of year, with temperatures often in the 90s and an average humidity level of around 70 percent. Despite this, prices and crowd size both hit a peak in June, July, and August — so if you want to save money and avoid unpleasantly long lines, you may want to plan your trip for another season.

The winter months can offer good deals and above-average elbow room, but there are still challenges to consider. The weeks surrounding Christmas are some of the busiest (and priciest) of the year, and January's chilly conditions can pose a problem for visitors wanting to enjoy Disney World's pools and water parks .

The Best and Worst Times to go to Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld Orlando in 2022 and 2023

Aryn Bordelon | July 19, 2022 January 14, 2022

There’s nothing worse than meticulously planning out a family vacation and allowing the excitement and anticipation to build only to arrive at your destination and realize that everyone else had the same ideas you did. Managing your time and expectations is a huge part of enjoying your trip to Orlando, so today we’re going to break down our recommendations on the best and worst times to go to the theme parks in 2022 and 2023. For more detailed information on our recommendations to go to Universal Orlando Resort specifically, check out our pages on the best day of the week to go to Universal and the best time of the year to go to Universal . We also have a number of touring plans for you to choose from to make the most of your time in Orlando!

A few things to consider as you review our suggestions — the primary element we measured when making these recommendations was anticipated crowd level . However, other things to keep in mind are the fact that busier times mean (generally) more attentive and higher staffed experiences, and that closing times and experience availability in the off-seasons might also be affected by lower crowd levels, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic , when employees and resources have to be doled out with particular care and attention. But all signs point to things getting back to normal. For example, Universal Orlando Resort is welcoming back concerts during their Mardi Gras festivities, and SeaWorld Orlando has events going on throughout the year.

It’s also important to note that for many, there’s really never a bad time to go to the parks. With Disney , Universal , and SeaWorld all accessible year-round, there is always something to do. Another way to make your trip to Orlando more efficient (if it’s in your budget), is staying at an official resort hotel . We sincerely recommend taking advantage of these resorts for the amenities alone — the premier Universal Orlando Resort hotels offer complimentary Express Passes to guests, and all levels of their resorts offer Early Park Admission to guests. The official hotels at Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort offer a number of transportation options, making access to their parks quick and easy.

One last thing to consider before we dive into the details at hand: reservations and pandemic protocols. It’s no fun to think about, but these stipulations are important to consider in planning your trip and what to expect from your visit. Walt Disney World Resort still requires guests to make reservations ahead of their visit (with reservations already going into 2023), and reservations definitely fill up and hit capacity at certain parks certain times of the year. Currently, masks are required in attraction queues and on all attractions themselves (even outdoor ones) at both Walt Disney World and at Universal Orlando Resort. SeaWorld Orlando recommends guests wear masks when indoors.

Holidays for 2022 and 2023:

  • Although not a holiday, an overarching event in Orlando for the next fourteen months is the Walt Disney World 50th anniversary celebration . Although Magic Kingdom is the park actually celebrating its golden anniversary, commemorative festivities, specialty merchandise, and food offerings can be found throughout the resort and all four theme parks.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 17, 2022 and January 16, 2023
  • Presidents’ Day: February 21, 2022 and February 20, 2023
  • Easter: April 17, 2022 and April 9, 2023
  • Labor Day: September 5, 2022 and September 4, 2023
  • Columbus Day: October 10, 2022 and October 9, 2023
  • Veterans Day: November 11 every year

We list out these dates because any extended weekend or holiday will draw crowds to the parks. Locals take advantage of the extra day and regional visitors have extra wiggle room to make the visit and make it worth it.

run Disney Events in 2022 and 2023:

run Disney events have a significant impact on the dynamics of Orlando tourism. These increasingly popular events are famous for selling out in hours, and avid runners flock to the event weekends and frequently bring along an entourage to enjoy the festivities and make a trip out of it. While you won’t necessarily notice huge increases in park attendance (particularly at the non-Disney parks), general highway traffic, routes, and hotel prices might be impacted on these weekends and are worth noting.

2022 run Disney events:

  • February 24-27: Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend
  • March 31 – April 3:  run Disney Springtime Surprise Weekend
  • November 3-6: Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend

2023 run Disney events:

  • January 4-8: Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend
  • February 23-26: Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend
  • April 13-16:  run Disney Springtime Surprise Weekend

Best and worst times to visit Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld Orlando in Spring 2022 and 2023

Best times to go:

  • January 10-14 and the end of January
  • First half of February
  • First few days of March

Here’s why: The springtime is probably our favorite season to go to the parks for several reasons. For one thing, the weather is hard to beat. Orlando rarely gets uncomfortably cold, but the cooler days that emerge in January and pepper into March are the perfect temperature to enjoy your day at the park without sweating for hours on end. Crowds are generally low because the springtime follows the busy holiday season, but there are some special events (most notably, Mardi Gras ) to entice visitors.

Worst times to go:

  • January 15 – 18
  • The back half of February
  • March 5 – end of April

Here’s why: As we stated earlier, as a rule, any extended weekend will result in a spike in park attendance. In February, visits partially increase because a great deal of visitors to the Orlando area are from Louisiana, a state which gets school breaks for Mardi Gras. After that, the rush is from Spring Breakers starting to arrive, and the busy season looms just around the corner!

Best and worst times to visit Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld Orlando in Summer 2022 and 2023

  • Weekdays in the second half of April through mid-May
  • First two weeks of June
  • The second half of August

Here’s why: While the summer has a notorious reputation for being jam-packed and crowded, there are pockets of time that guests will likely not have this experience. Unfortunately, these times are most easily accessible for locals. Weekdays in late April through mid-May are usually light traffic. Things ramp up and get steady for a while in the heat of the summer, but by the end of August (when school is back in session) the parks thin out again.

  • Second half of June
  • All of July
  • The first half of August

Here’s why: Unfortunately, no matter how you slice it — summers in Central Florida can be rough. Essentially, we would block off weekends in May and every day through the first half of August if crowds and heat are not a tolerable part of your theme-park experience. One thing to keep in mind for Summer 2022 is the scheduled opening of the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind roller coaster at EPCOT. This cutting-edge coaster is sure to draw crowds to the park, so keep that in mind as you make your travels. The summer is also a great time to do a number of things in Central Florida that aren’t theme-park related, from airboat tours and glass-bottom boat excursions to world-class shopping or exploring trails in a number of state and community parks.

Best and worst times to visit Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld Orlando in Fall and Winter 2022 and 2023

  • Weekdays in November (except for Thanksgiving week)
  • Weekdays in December that don’t fall on a holiday week

Here’s why: A lot of families save their trips for the holidays . With so many groups relying on collective time off together with the rest of their members, the holidays tend to be incredibly busy (in some cases, even surpassing the hustle and bustle of the summertime). That being said, if your circumstances are such that you can make it during a weekday during the holiday season, the beautiful decor, special shows, and delectable treats make going at that time completely worth it, in our opinion.

  • Thanksgiving week
  • The week of Christmas through the New Year

Here’s why: Holidays attract visitors, it’s just that simple. Many groups decide that their trip to an Orlando theme park is their holiday gift to one another, and it’s hard to blame them. Being in some of the most magical and immersive places you can think of, with those you love, during the holiday season, is just about as idyllic as you can get! Just remember that the high traffic of going to the parks on or around holidays means that all those employees can’t be doing the same with their families!

We know better than anyone that sometimes, vacations plan themselves and you aren’t able to have complete control over when you go. Regardless, we hope that this information will serve you well on your exciting Orlando vacation. Be sure to check out our Crowd Calendar for information on projected crowd levels at Universal Orlando Resort.

Best Times To Visit Orlando

The best time to visit Orlando is from March to May. That's the time of year you'll find the most pleasant weather (high 50s to high 80s most days) and agreeable prices on travel and lodging (excluding holiday weekends and school breaks). Likewise, September to mid-November offers comfortable temperatures and reasonable airfare and hotel rates; however, autumn makes up the most active part of Florida's hurricane season, which falls between June and November. Summertime is the worst season to plan a trip to the area – that's when the state's heat and humidity are borderline unbearable and hotels take advantage of the school break to drive up room rates. Prices are also at a premium between late November and February when families flock to the region to visit grandparents and celebrate the holidays.

When is the best time to visit Orlando?

  • Orlando Attractions Planning Guide and Money Saving Tips

The best time of year to avoid large crowds at the Walt Disney World ® theme parks is when school is in session. The best days overall to visit Orlando attractions are mid-January, late April (before Memorial Day), and the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Late August can be a great time as well.

Best Time To Visit Walt Disney World ® – Magic Kingdom

The best times to visit the Magic Kingdom are between the late morning and early afternoon hours, as the mid-day parade and lunchtime minimizes attraction wait times dramatically. If you are traveling with small children, enjoying this busy park early will also allow you to put the little ones down for a nap earlier in the evening.

Best Time To Visit Walt Disney World ®  – Hollywood Studios

It is best to enjoy popular thrill rides like Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror as early as possible to bypass the long lines. If you are unable to get there early enough, be sure to reserve a time using FastPass+! It is an absolute must for both of those attractions. “Fantasmic!”, Hollywood Studio’s fireworks show, is presented every night – sometimes twice. If you visit on a night where there are two showings, shoot for the second showing – it’ll be much less crowded.

Best Time To Visit Walt Disney World ®  – Epcot

“Soarin” is one of the most popular rides in all of the parks, so be sure to either get to Epcot at rope drop (when the park opens) or use your FastPass+ to reserve a time. The late-night Illuminations Fireworks Spectacular is one of the most popular fireworks experiences in all of the parks, so plan your night around it if you’re interested in checking it out.

Older attractions don’t have long waits during slower times of the year, but everything can get packed if you visit during the summer months. The best days to visit older Orlando attractions are the same for pretty much all Walt Disney World ® Parks : get there early, take a mid-afternoon break, and return at night.

Best Time To Visit Walt Disney World ®  – Animal Kingdom

The best days to visit the Animal Kingdom are a little different than the rest of the Walt Disney World ® parks . It often opens earlier than the rest of Walt Disney World ® , but it always closes much earlier, too. For your best chance to see the most animals, get there early morning or in the late afternoon. These are the top feeding times for the animals.

The rides here with potentially long lines include the roller coaster Everest, Kali River Rapids, and the safari experience. Once again, either visit Animal Kingdom rides after the park opens, right before it closes, or get FastPass+ to avoid long lines.

The best days to visit Orlando attractions are simple: when you can! There is always something amazing going on in Walt Disney World ® and you will have fun whenever you come. Get here early and stay late for the shortest lines!

Summer in Orlando: June-August

Summer in Orlando can be quite hard to manage if you are not used to the heat and humidity. With temperatures averaging in the mid-90s (low 30sC)and the higher humidity making it feel like the low 100s (high 30sC), this subtropical climate really is fantastic for swimming in the ocean or the natural springs around the city. The heat does usually continue through mid-September.

Despite the hazy heat of summer, June sees large crowds, especially at the theme parks and the beaches. The main attractions are always packed and lines are very long to get into the parks and attractions. If you happen to be visiting Orlando for more of a cultural experience, you may want to stick with the museums and art galleries that are deliciously air conditioned.

Peak tourist time during the summer months is in July and is the busiest time for the theme parks and attractions in Orlando. Be sure to keep the kids hydrated and slathered in sunscreen when you are out and about at the theme parks. The lines for the rides will be super long unless you purchase a special pass that allows you to skip the line one time for select rides.

best time of year to visit orlando theme parks

August is always the hottest month in Orlando. You really want to stay in the air conditioning as much as possible. The sun is at its hottest between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The water parks in Orlando are at full capacity all day long during August.

Summertime in Orlando is very pricey. Airfare, hotels, and even attractions cost more during the summer months and there are fewer deals to be had for families or large groups planning a trip. You might be able to score a few small deals if you book several months in advance but still plan on spending quite a bit more than if you visited during the less busy times.

Events that occur in the summer include Bite30 (restaurant week lasts for 30 days in Orlando and celebrates the restaurant scene’s best of the best) and the Fourth of July Fireworks (fireworks light up the sky over Epcot, Magic Kingdom, and Disney Springs).

Additional fun includes the Lake Nona Great American Block Party which is a free event for the whole family with activities, lots of food, and live entertainment. Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is a month-long festival serving up some of the best wine and food in Orlando.

Fall in Orlando: September-November

While hurricanes do not normally cause problems in Orlando, hurricane season does go from June through October and when a hurricane is headed toward Florida, it is something to keep in the back of your mind while planning your trip during the summer and fall months. September is also still very hot and humid making it tricky to be outdoors for long periods of time. Temperatures will be around 86 (30C).

With school going back in session in September, tourism does drop off a bit and hotel rates will plummet. It is also one of the best times to visit the theme parks in Orlando because lines will be shorter and crowds thinner, making it a more enjoyable experience. You can also score some pretty good deals on theme park packages and such.

October sees the furnace that is Orlando switch off and much-needed cooler temperatures are a welcome relief for locals and tourists. It is still warm in Orlando in the fall. It is in Florida after all, but the humidity does decrease, making it bearable. Temperatures will be in the lower to mid-80s (high 20sC) but it is pleasant without the humidity.

November sees many of the snowbirds coming in to roost for the winter and hotel prices begin to rise as Orlando gears up for the holidays. Tourists also start making plans to visit during the holidays as a way to get away from the cold and snow.

Events that occur in the fall include Orlando Pride Festival . Pride month falls in October for Orlando and the city offers events throughout the city. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is held at the Disney World Resort, and is a great party for kids.

Plan to attend Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. This is not really an activity for kids, but teens and adults will love the gore and terror. Epcot International Food & Wine Festival continues through November at Walt Disney World Resort.

Temps during winter in Orlando are absolutely perfect for those who detest the frigid temperatures that engulf most of the country. Balmy weather with highs in the mid-70s (mid 20sC) and lows in the low 50s (10sC) makes for a pleasant vacation in Orlando. Bring a jacket if you plan on being out and about in the evenings when the sun goes down and there is a nip in the air.

While you can get some pretty cheap hotel rates in the fall once school is back in session, the absolute best time to find the cheapest rates on hotels, airfare, and package deals for theme parks and attractions is during January and February. But you'll want to avoid certain holidays including Martin Luther King Jr Day, Valentine’s Day, and President’s Day.

December still has high prices because of the Christmas season and New Year’s so unless you are traveling to be with family for the holidays you may want to plan on postponing your trip until January or February when things are cheaper. You will want to start searching for the best deals about six months in advance.

The theme parks are decorated for the holidays with twinkling lights, characters in Santa suits, and elves dancing around every corner; it is not your typical winter wonderland. Huge crowds descend on Orlando during Christmas and winter breaks making traffic a nightmare and all the attractions and theme parks are filled to capacity.

The first part of January is still busy since most schools are still on winter break but thankfully prices for hotels drop quickly. The crowds are still pretty dense at the more popular tourist attractions but there are a lot of non-touristy things in downtown Orlando or nearby Winter Park that will be less crowded but still super fun.

Paddleboarding in February can only happen in Florida. Many people head out to the lakes and enjoy time on the water while the rest of the country is freezing. You can see the manatees’ migration at Blue Spring State Park in February. These amazing animals are a sight to see so bring along your camera.

SeaWorld Orlando offers amazing deals during the winter season and is a wonderful place to hang out and enjoy animal encounters. If you happen to have the kids in tow, they will love seeing all the different animals housed here.

Events that occur in the winter include Epcot’s Candlelight Processional, which is the Christmas story is retold to the accompaniment of a 50-piece orchestra and choir. Citrus Bowl is a popular college football bowl game that is held at the Camping World Stadium .

Other entertaining things to do are the Epcot International Festival of the Arts (live concerts, workshops, performances, and exhibits celebrating everything related to art) and the Disney Princess Half Marathon . Thousands of runners dressed up as Disney princesses and princes converge on Orlando for this half marathon.

Lastly, consider Universal Orlando Mardi Gras. The Big Easy invades the Sunshine State as Mardi Gras is done up right in Orlando with live entertainment, delicious food, and parades every day.

Spring in Orlando: March-May

Most people will say that the best time to visit Orlando is during the spring from March to May when the weather is almost perfect. Temps climb into the upper 80s (high 20sC) and then drop back down into the upper 50s (mid10sC) at night so bring along a sweater or jacket for those chilly evenings.

Prices are still reasonable, except for holiday weekends and of course, spring break, making it one of the cheapest times to visit Orlando. You will want to book your airfare and hotels a few months in advance to take advantage of cheaper rates. Springtime is also one of the driest seasons for Orlando making it ideal for theme park visits and lounging on the beaches.

Spring breakers invade the city in March bringing huge crowds of rambunctious college students. Epcot also hosts the annual Flower & Garden Festival which is another big tourist draw. Overflow from Daytona Bike Week also affects Orlando tourism in March. If you plan on visiting during this month, your itinerary may want to include public parks, museums, malls, and breweries rather than the typical touristy things.

Easter break sees a lot of visitors to the theme parks and spring break will continue into April. Orlando is a busy place to be during April and if you are not interested in seeing the theme parks, head to the lakes and parks for some great outdoor fun with smaller crowds. The water temperatures are also starting to rise making it a good time to dive into the water.

best time of year to visit orlando theme parks

The rainy season begins in May so make sure you have an alternative itinerary for the best things to do on a rainy day in Orlando . There are plenty of indoor activities to keep you entertained when rain threatens to ruin your day at the lake or theme parks.

Events that occur in the spring include Epcot’s Flower & Garden Festival. Experience the sight of breathtaking gardens and floral arrangements including some beloved Disney characters crafted out of flowers and greenery. Make time for APGD Eat Local, Sip Local Stroll. The Audubon Park Garden District is where you want to be for dishes made with Florida-grown ingredients and local craft beers.

Head to the Florida Film Festival. The Enzian Theater hosts a 10-day film festival where about 200 different films are shown. Church Street in downtown Orlando hosts a night of margaritas, tacos, guacamole, and live entertainment during Cinco de Mayo.

The best time to visit Orlando is all of the time

Summer vacation is always a great time to visit Orlando if you can take the heat and humidity. Early January offers a break from the freezing temps that most of the United States experiences. Mid-November sees holiday crowds start to gather. Really, no matter what time of year you want to visit Orlando, you will find more than enough to keep you entertained.

From Orlando's theme parks to the Epcot International Flower show, there is definitely something for everyone. The pleasant weather draws the crowds, even during Florida's rainy season. The summer heat, though, can be taxing so remember to stay hydrated and apply plenty of sunscreen. Grab your friends and plan your next vacation to Orlando! It used to be that a visit to Universal Orlando was typically tacked on to a Florida vacation spent primarily at Walt Disney World —if it was tacked on at all. Then, along came The Wizarding World of Harry Potter , and everything changed.

Now, Central Florida's other theme park resort is a destination in its own right with two bustling theme parks (each with its own Harry Potter land), a water park, a bunch of hotels, and the lively CityWalk dining/shopping/entertainment district. It is expanding at a furious pace and aims to compete against The Mouse down the street on a level playing field.

Why Visit During a Less Crowded Time?

By "bustling" theme parks, we mean that both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure are filled with extraordinary attractions and other wonderful things to do—as well as lots of people. If you show up during an especially busy time, you could end up spending a lot of time waiting in long lines as well as spending a lot of money for on-property accommodations. Rather than making Universal Orlando an afterthought, plan ahead and schedule your visit during one of the slower times of the year.

It used to be that tickets to the parks cost the same regardless of the time of year. Now, however, the resort charges different rates depending on when you plan to visit. Ironically, a ticket would cost less during a less crowded time of the year, and you'd be able to get on more rides and derive more value from your ticket purchase.

If you plan on staying at one of Universal's on-property hotels, the rates can be considerably lower during the offseason. There are many great reasons to consider staying on property. For one, all of the hotels, which are managed by Loew's, are wonderful and offer great accommodations. For another, since you will be a short walk, pleasant boat ride, or a bus ride away, you'll be able to get an early start and stay late at the parks—two strategies that are critical for minimizing waits and maximizing the value of your ticket purchases.

Significantly, all guests at the Portofino Bay, the Royal Pacific, and the Hard Rock hotels get complimentary front-of-the-line access for most of the attractions and shows at both parks. The Sapphire Falls, Cabana Bay Beach , Aventura, and Endless Summer hotels do not offer the perk. Guests of those hotels, along with off-property visitors, can purchase  Universal Express Plus Passes  which offer skip-the-lines access, but the passes are available on a limited basis. And, get this—the prices for the passes vary according to the time of year visited. Universal charges a hefty premium for in-season Express passes. That's yet another reason to plan your visit during the slower times of the year.

Guests at all of the hotels , including the those that do not offer complimentary Express passes, can get early admission to both of the Wizarding World lands at Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. During the extra morning hour, before the crush of the general public crowds, the lines can be much more manageable.

What Are the Slower Times of Year to Visit?

The off-off-season with the least amount of visitors and the lowest hotel prices are January to mid-February and early December. Stay away from Presidents' Week and Martin Luther King Day (and, in general, try to stay away from holidays. Obviously, that is when more people plan to visit the parks).

The next best times of year to visit are the off-seasons in September and October (as a bonus, you can experience the incredible Halloween Horror Nights ), early November (stay away from Thanksgiving), mid-December, April (stay away from Easter) and early May.

You will find bigger crowds and higher hotel prices in late May, early June, and late August than the periods listed above, but these times of year are still considered the off-season. You would still likely enjoy your visit more and get better value than during the in-season times listed below.

The peak periods (which you should avoid unless money is no object, you don't mind huge crowds, and/or you have no choice) dovetail with when kids are out of school. The summer school vacation period of late June, July , and early August (as well as the Thanksgiving break) is the prime season at Universal Orlando. The absolute worst times of year to visit, when the crowds are the heaviest and, according to the laws of supply and demand, the ticket and hotel prices are at their highest are the Christmas and Easter holidays. The week between Christmas and New Year's can be especially crowded. Universal has actually closed the gates to off-property visitors because its parks sometimes reach capacity the last week of December.

If you find yourself planning a visit during busier times, all is not lost!  Learn how to skip the lines at Universal Orlando , even when the crowds are huge.

Most people visit Orlando for the theme parks. The Walt Disney World Resort offers attractions, shows, dining and shopping on a property that is twice the size of the island of Manhattan in New York. First-time visitors underestimate how massive it really is.

Despite the artificiality that Disney Parks are known for, it’s the quintessential American vacation and it really is an experience like none other.

And with other theme parks like Universal Orlando , Volcano Bay ,  Sea World , and Busch Gardens Tampa , there are plenty of places to keep you busy.

But theme parks is not all that Orlando has to offer. It’s also surrounded by beautiful nature spots, unique wildlife experiences, excellent shopping, thriving nightlife, and many quirky roadside attractions that add to its charm. For these reasons, Orlando is definitely worth a visit.

Of course, there’s more to Orlando than theme parks, especially if you want to experience what the locals do. But if you want theme parks, below are some handy tips.

Ideas For What to Do in Orlando

Beyond the theme parks, Orlando offers plenty to keep you busy – which is surprising to many. Here’s what’s new in Orlando for 2024 .

Orlando’s top wildlife attractions  allow you to get up close with real Florida wildlife in their natural habitat.

While, many visiting Orlando may consider a trip to the Everglades National Park, know that it’s a four hour drive away. (We recommend adding to your Florida Bucket List though!)

You can however, get a small taste of this experience at Wild Florida Everglades Airboat & Wildlife Park, one of the best thing to do in Orlando for many tourists.

It’s located about an hour from Orlando on Lake Cypress, which is considered the Headwaters of the Central Florida Everglades.

Wild Florida gives a glimpse of what it’s like to explore the wild side of Florida. In their  Gator Park , there are over 200 animals on display, including exotic animals like zebras, sloths, lemurs, and Watusi.

Most people love visiting for the Orlando airboat tours, where you’ll glide through the iconic swamplands on an airboat, you get to see the diversity of this unique ecosystem.

Check out this Wild Florida Everglades tour from Orlando, Florida!

Although not directly next to the ocean, Orlando is not too far away from some of Florida’s best beaches.

From the serene shores of Vero Beach to the vibrant atmosphere of Clearwater Beach, there are many coastal havens you can run to if you want to escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

My favorite is the sun-kissed Cocoa Beach, known for its surfing culture and lively atmosphere. Cocoa Beach is just a quick 45-minute drive from the city on the Atlantic Coast, and you can find free parking at Ron Jon Surf Shop.

New Smyrna Beach is also a nice beach to visit for a tranquil beach day amidst picturesque surroundings.

While you’re there, you might as well go skydiving at Skydive Space Center , one of the highest drops in the world at 18,000 feet (5.48km).

If you’ve never been sky diving before, it’s the ultimate adrenaline rush!

What makes Orlando a great place to skydive from is the amazing, picturesque Florida coastal views you get while feeling the unparalleled sensation of free fall.

Whether you’re a first-time tandem diver or a seasoned enthusiast, the opportunity to conquer personal fears, embrace boundless freedom, and savor the unmatched exhilaration of skydiving is one of the top things to do in Orlando.

4. Visit Orlando’s Roadside Attractions

“Old Florida” is a term that is used to describe Florida in the 1950’s, before the theme parks would arrive.

Roadside Americana reigned supreme, and while many of Orlando’s roadside attractions from this era closed down to make way for more modern developments, there are still a few ticking around today..

The ones that stood the test of time, are truly the ones that are the best. Be sure to check out:

  • Gatorland touts itself as the Alligator Capitol of the World, a well-deserved title. The adventurous types can take zip lines over a pool of hungry gators. If you’re up for a drive, Weeki Wachee Springs gives you the chance to see real mermaids.
  • Check out Fun Spot America. While Orlando is famous for its big theme parks, riding the wooden roller coaster at Fun Spot America is like stepping back in time.
  • At night, check out the Silver Moon Drive-In , one of the few remaining Drive-In Movie Theaters around. For $4 per person, you get a double-feature of first-run films from the comfort of your car.
  • For a slower change of pace, visit Mount Dora, a charming town north of Orlando. They are known for their annual craft festivals each year and locally-owned shops. You’ll be sure to find a friend here.

5. Visit the Theme Parks in Orlando

If you are going to visit Orlando, then you simply must spend some time at one of the many theme parks.

Orlando alone has over 18 theme parks, not including water parks. You’ll need at least three weeks to experience it all, since many of these theme parks require multiple days to see.

For shorter lengths of stay, a visit to the Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure (where you can experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction and walk down a real-life Diagon Alley) are the must-dos.

You may also want to visit Volcano Bay, Discovery Cove in Orlando, as well as ICON Park, Legoland Florida and Seaworld Orlando. You can read this helpful guide here.

One of the newer theme parks is Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where you can find thrill rides and VR experiences, such as stepping into a VR Star Wars world.

Watch our videos of our time at Universal Orlando Resort and read all our tips for Universal Orlando Resort.

There’s no doubt about it, theme parks draw big crowds and long lines, but savvy visitors to Orlando know how to avoid them.

  • September and January are generally quiet in the parks. Lines for popular attractions will generally average 20 minutes or so (much short than the 60-90 minutes in the summer).
  • Disney offers FastPass , a ride reservation system that virtually eliminates your wait for several top attractions. It’s included with your park admission.
  • Universal Orlando offers a similar experience, for an additional fee.

And if you want to experience Christmas decorations without the crowds, the 1st week in December is the perfect time of the season to visit any of the parks.

If you want to experience Halloween at Disney, check out this useful guide.

Save Money on Orlando Theme Parks ! Discounted theme park tickets are hard to come by for out-of-state visitors. And when you add up an entire week’s worth of food, hotels, and souvenirs, the number can be quite staggering.

Undercover Tourist is our trusted partner that offers authentic theme park tickets at discounted prices!

At the center of the city is Lake Eola, a nearly one-mile (1.9km) lake that is the focal point of the city.

At night, the iconic Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain is lit up in a rainbow of colors and on select night, a fountain show synchronized to music will play.

The fountain display takes place at 8.00pm and 9.30pm most nights.

Lake Eola is also a great place to visit in the day if you want something more chilled to do. You can also rent a swan boat, take the kids to the playground, or simply relax on the lawns.

If you’re looking to stay up late, Downtown Orlando has several clubs that keep busy until 2 A.M.

Your best bet for dancing is on Church Street , which offers a range of clubs and bars.

Wall St., located just off Orange Ave, is another popular spot with lots of bars and restaurants. There’s a good chance you’ll stumble upon live music too.

Of course, for that late-night meal after dancing the night away, Bananas Modern Diner is a short drive away. And Steak and Shake , a popular chain in the south will give you the greasy food your tummy deserves!

If you’re staying near the theme parks, Universal Citywalk offers a variety of clubs with individual tickets available for purchase per club, or an all-in-one access pass. A movie theater and mini golf course are also available.

Downtown Disney offers nighttime entertainment with a softer touch, but drinks can be had at Raglan Road , an authentic Irish Pub.

8. Shop ’till you drop!

Orlando is a shopper’s paradise! Both the Florida Mall and Mall at Millenia are popular with both tourists and locals.

The Florida Mall has a great mix of stores for all budgets while the Mall at Millenia caters to the higher-end shopper.

For great deals, be sure to visit the Premium Outlets . You could easily spend a whole day browsing here.

Disney Springs is also a great area for shopping and dining.

Each of the theme parks offers special events throughout the year, so it doesn’t matter what time of year you visit, you can always find a festival to attend.

If you had to only hit one, visit the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival in the fall. You can find sample-size plates available featuring cuisine from around the world. It’s a favorite of tourists and locals alike.

During the winter months, the Orlando Improv Festival , has grown in popularity, and every February, the Plant City Strawberry Festival draws huge crowds who celebrate the best fruit around, the strawberry!

The springtime brings the Florida Film Festival – a week of independent films with emerging and well-established industry talent, but as summer approaches, GayDays Orlando is the festival to see! It is celebrated on the first weekend in June with over 150,000 people in attendance at the theme parks.

It’s one of the biggest events in Orlando.

For the astronaut in you, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Complex gives you a glimpse into America’s Space Program.

Founded in the 1960s, this iconic facility has witnessed pivotal moments in space exploration, including the launch of the first American astronaut to the Moon.

As you wander the museum, you can learn about its history and heritage, from the Vertical Processing Facility to the Visitor Complex, where enthralling exhibits and interactive experiences make learning about space exploration fun.

See towering rockets, shop for astronaut memorabilia in the gift shop, and even learn about veteran space explorers.

Be sure to sign up for the guided tour which takes you all around the facility and in the near future, one of the retired space shuttles will be on display. Get your entry tickets here.

One of my favorite local spots is the Rainbow River , which is a great place to go tubing.

As you drift along the crystalline, turquoise waters, you’re surrounded by lush nature which makes for an idyllic backdrop as you relax in a tube.

While tubing isn’t allowed within the day-use or headsprings areas of the park, the nearby KP Hole Park provides a perfect launch point.

If you don’t have a tube, don’t worry, there are tube rentals and shuttle services available from Rainbow Springs State Park.

Load up your car with a picnic lunch, rent an inner tube and drift aimlessly away down the crystal clear, sparkling river – it’s pure relaxation!

Tubing is open from April 1st until 30th September, from 8.00am until 12.45pm.

For more relaxing things to do in Orlando, head to the alluring botanical gardens of Harry P. Leu Gardens, a botanical paradise spanning nearly 50 acres.

This idyllic haven boasts a mesmerizing tapestry of aroids, azaleas, bamboo, citrus, and an array of vibrant flora. The gardens belong to the estate of Harry P. and Mary Jane Leu, who purchased the house (now a museum) in 1936.

He was a successful industrial supply company owner with a fondness for travel, and bought back many plants and seeds to grow in his garden. The result is a beautiful garden with global plants that you won’t find anywhere else in the states.

What makes this garden unique is the dinosaur exhibit with life-size dinosaur sculptures!

13. Be amazed at Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

You may have heard about the bizarre wonders at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, which has museums located all over the world.

In Orlando, you can delve into the mesmerizing world of oddities and curiosities that have made this museum franchise famous!

Within the “Odditorium,” you’ll discover 16 galleries that showcase an incredible array of unbelievable exhibits, from peculiar artifacts such as a shrunken heads and egyptian mummies, there is no shortage of weird and wonderful things to see here.

As well as the exhibits, there are also fun activities and workshops for kids, such as creating a wax mold of your hands!

Winter Park is a picturesque chain of lakes that are best seen from a scenic boat tour .

As you glide along the tranquil waterways on a charming pontoon boat, you’ll see the towering cypress trees, swamps, man-made canals, vibrant flora, and even some opulent homes.

The boat tour only carries 18 passengers, so the beauty of the area is not lost to overcrowded boats.

If you’re visiting Orlando with teenagers, a fun family activity to do is escape the room!

Escape Rooms are so much fun! You and your team have a dedicated amount of time to solve puzzles and riddles, in order to beat the game and escape the room before the time limit runs out.

If you’ve never done an Escape Room before, Escape Game Orlando is a great place for beginners, since they have a variety of rooms that cater to beginners (and seasoned escapers too!)

Whether you’re tasked with escaping from prison, pulling off an impossible heist, finding gold from the Gold Rush or launching a space ship, there is an escape room for every taste and experience level.

Unleash your inner creativity at the Crayola Experience , where creativity and fun unite!

This huge facilities, spanning over 70,000 square feet, is full of whimsical adventures, from coloring classes to demonstrations on how the crayons are made to a giant soft play.

You and your kids can sculpt, draw, and explore a kaleidoscope of ways to create unique artwork.

Get your entrance ticket for the Crayola Experience here!

Another great place to take the kids for an educational and fun day out is the Orlando Science Center , where curiosity knows no bounds.

This hands-on museum has regular events and classes for children under 4, as well as hosts a variety of interactive exhibits that delve into natural sciences and futuristic technologies.

From mind-bending displays on ecosystems to engaging experiences in teleportation and brain games, the center ignites a passion for learning in a fun way.

For golfing enthusiasts, a visit to Topgolf Orlando is a must. With climate-controlled driving bays akin to bowling lanes, this venue offers fun and competitive golf games for all skill levels.

It also has a wonderful restaurant and sports bar with a roof terrace and fire pits.

At first glance, Orlando seems to have nothing but chain restaurants. But if you have your own car, and know a local, they’ll steer you to some fantastic gems.

  • Around the theme parks, Press 101 offers gourmet sandwiches and wines at reasonable prices. Live music is played on the weekend.
  • For a special occasion, neighboring Seasons 52 , offers a fine dining experience with an ever-changing menu, freshly prepared food and great wines.
  • In downtown Orlando, Pine Twenty2 offers locally-sourced, all-natural hamburgers that are just bursting with flavor. You can build your own or order one of the house specialities.
  • For a sweet ending, stop by The Dessert Lady for freshly made gourmet cakes that are gigantic.
  • Pom Pom’s Teahouse & Sandwicheria is located in the Milk District, a short ride from downtown (near the milk factory). They offer an eclectic array of teas and delicious sandwiches in an urban vibe.

But for a true taste of Orlando, you need to schedule your culinary visit around one of The Daily City Food Truck Events.

Scheduled on a weekly basis, rotating venues every week, 20-30 food trucks line up with every imaginable cuisine. My recommendation, go direct to the Yum Yum Cupcake Truck.

The best time to visit Orlando is in October and March.

Each month is warm enough for you to take full advantage of beaches, water parks and all the other outdoor activities, but without the humidity that the summer is notorious for.

October tends to be less crowded at the theme parks than March (popular with school spring break), but there is always the looming threat of a hurricane interrupting your trip – though the likelihood for that is minimal.

With Orlando being such a popular destination, direct routes from most major airports in the United States are almost always available and competition keeps prices reasonably affordable.

Direct flights from destinations in Europe and South America are also plentiful.

Orlando is served by both busses and rail, but the logistics of getting to the main tourist corridor are cumbersome at best. You’re better off renting a car from the airport.

Downtown Orlando is a very walkable city, and walking is the preferred way of getting around. But Orlando is a city that sprawls out, so if you’d like to visit anything not in downtown, you’ll need to travel by car.

Public transport by bus is available ( GoLynx ), but not convenient if time is important to you. You’ll need to make several transfers to get anywhere and the frequency of busses is not timely.

If you’re staying along international drive, there is a trolley that runs up and down the length of the street, making frequent stops.

Don’t forget Uber as a way to get around. This is widely used in Orlando.

Look for your rental car on DiscoverCars.com to browse all the top companies in one place.

Where to Stay in Orlando

If there’s one thing Orlando has, it’s plenty of hotels that cater to all travel budgets.

If you’re looking to stay on Disney Property the All-Star Sports Resort , the All Star Music Resort , or the All Star Movies Resort  is your best bet for the cheapest price (but still pricey).

If you have the budget, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is my favorite, while Disney’s Boardwalk is located near one of the theme parks, Epcot.

For Universal Studios, check out:

  • Cabana Bay Beach Resort ( See prices and availability on Booking.com )
  • Loews Sapphire Falls Resort ( See prices and availability Booking.com)
  • Loews Royal Pacific Hotel ( See prices and availability on Booking.com)
  • Hard Rock Hotel ( See prices and availability on Booking.com)

HOT TIP: If you are traveling with a large group of friends or family, check out this 10 bedroom vacation home near Disney World.  Try and find a group of people and split the cost, as accommodation in Orlando can be expensive.

Final Thoughts

You can almost guarantee that when the rest of the country (and the world for that matter) are bundling up to keep warm, Orlando is experiencing sunshine and perfect weather all year round.

Universal Orlando announces new movie-themed parade, nighttime shows and more

Tarah Chieffi

As if Universal Orlando doesn't have enough excitement on the horizon with an entirely new theme park opening in 2025 , it is planning a blockbuster summer of entertainment.

On Monday, Universal announced a new parade, a nighttime lagoon show, a projection show in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more. The first of these new experiences debuts June 14. Here's the "mega" movie fun you can experience this summer.

Cinesational: A Symphonic Spectacular

best time of year to visit orlando theme parks

On June 14, Universal Studios Florida will debut an all-new nighttime show that will bring the park's lagoon to life with music, fountains, projection mapping and drones. The show will lean into Universal's legacy of blockbuster films that have inspired past, present and current theme park attractions.

Guests will experience music from iconic films like "Jurassic World," "Jaws," "Ghostbusters," "Back to the Future," "Harry Potter," "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," "Minions" and more; favorite scenes and characters will be projected onto fountains over the lagoon. Meanwhile, more than 600 drones will fly overhead, making the show even more spectacular.

Universal Mega Movie Parade

best time of year to visit orlando theme parks

In sticking with the theme of bringing cinematic masterpieces off the big screen and into its parks, the Universal Mega Movie Parade will debut July 3 at the Universal Studios Florida park. The parade will celebrate classic films like "E.T.," "Back to the Future," "Jaws" and "Ghostbusters," as well as recent blockbusters like "Jurassic World," "Minions," "Sing," "Trolls," and "Kung Fu Panda."

Universal Mega Movie Parade will feature 13 new floats, special effects and nearly 100 dancers, skaters, stilt walkers and other performers. You'll have to see it in person to see how "mega" this parade really is, but Universal did share that there will be a 16-foot Stay Puft Marshmallow Man on the "Ghostbusters" float, a Caterbus and rainbows on the "Trolls" float and more than one massive dinosaur atop the "Jurassic World" float.

To celebrate the new parade, the park will open a limited-time Summer Tribute Store with themed rooms, merchandise and photo ops inspired by the films featured in the parade.

Hogwarts Always

best time of year to visit orlando theme parks

Hogwarts Always will debut on June 14 at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade in Universal Islands of Adventure. On select nights, guests can watch scenes from a school year at Hogwarts, from shopping for supplies in Diagon Alley to riding the Hogwarts Express, participating in the sorting ceremony and more projected onto the facade of Hogwarts Castle.

As an extra surprise, the show will have four different endings. Each one honors a different Hogwarts house, and you never know which house will come out on top.

DreamWorks Land opening

best time of year to visit orlando theme parks

Universal Orlando's newest land is also opening June 14. DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios Florida will feature attractions, play areas, meet-and-greets, restaurants and retail locations themed to popular DreamWorks films like "Shrek," "Trolls" and "Kung Fu Panda."

In addition to fun-filled experiences — like taking a ride on the Trollercoaster and playing in Shrek's Swamp — guests can attend a multi-sensory live show called DreamWorks Imagination Celebration that brings these beloved films to life in all-new ways.

Bottom line

If you don't have your summer visit planned, now is the time to choose your favorite Universal hotel , read up on our favorite restaurants and scope out the best rides . Book your trip now because this summer will be a big hit at Universal Orlando.

Members of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions are expecting stronger numbers at the gate this summer, the trade association announced Tuesday.

IAAPA expects a 2% increase in theme park attendance in North America and a 7% uptick in consumer spending. The trend toward family-friendly entertainment and animal-oriented attractions should boost the industry, said Jakob Wahl, president and CEO of Orlando-based IAAPA.

Visitors’ increased willingness to spend on special occasions can bolster bottom lines, Wahl said during a presentation on the Bayside Stadium stage at SeaWorld Orlando .

“We have seen is that people are willing to spend more on the parks because they want to make those days extra special,” Wahl said. “You see that we have more and more upscale premier experiences where people are willing to actually spend.”

He pointed to front-of-line privileges, fine dining and animal encounters as attractive extras.

IAAPA members represent theme parks, water parks, zoos, family entertainment centers, museums, manufacturers, suppliers and other attractions-related businesses in more than 100 countries.

Additions to Central Florida theme parks in the next few months will include Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ride at Magic Kingdom, Penguin Trek roller coaster at SeaWorld and DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios , which also will introduce a new lagoon show called “CineSational” and an in-park parade named “Universal Mega Movie Parade.”

“If you look at the investment program that Universal does, that SeaWorld does, that Disney does with their big announcements, I’m pretty confident that we will see a rise in international tourism as much as domestic tourism,” Wahl said.

WEATHER ALERT

2 rip current statements in effect for Coastal Flagler and Coastal Volusia Regions

News 6 insider, 🎢 these are the best amusement parks in florida.

When you hear the phrase “amusement park,” chances are the first thing that comes to your mind is Disney; however, in 2023, nearly 600 businesses described themselves as amusement parks in the United States.

There are places to enjoy thrill rides, view animal shows, swim, and play in nearly every state across the country, and one that might be near and dear to your heart may be unfamiliar to someone else, depending on where you live.

Recommended Videos

For instance, Lake Compounce in Bristol, Connecticut, holds the title of America’s oldest amusement park. It’s been in continuous operation since first opening to the public in 1846 when local scientist Samuel Botsford demonstrated electricity experiments for entertainment, but if you don’t live nearby, chances are you don’t know it (unless you’re an amusement park or history buff). On the flip side, there are behemoth parks that are destinations all their own.

People travel from all over the world to visit Disney’s and Universal’s theme parks in California and Florida.

If you’re a thrill ride, water park, or roller coaster junkie, Six Flags is another huge name, with 24 parks scattered throughout the U.S.

These types of parks truly transport you to another world and are full of their own kind of magic, but the quaint or historic parks like Lake Compounce are just as special—if not more so—to locals.Stacker compiled a list of the best amusement parks in Florida using data from Tripadvisor.

Tripadvisor ranks businesses using a combination of metrics, including overall rating, reviews, and number of page views. As a result, a business with a 5 out of 5 overall rating might rank lower than one with a 4 out of 5. Data is as of April 2024.Read on and see how many of these local amusement parks you’ve visited.

What to Know Before Booking a National Park Trip This Summer

Additional routes in popular parks now require reservations, the annual pass gets a big change, Juneteenth is now a new free entrance day and more changes for 2024.

A deep-blue mountain creek with evergreen trees and brown grasses along its shores is in front of a towering gray mountain peak scattered with snow.

By Lauren Matison

In 2023, the seashores, lakeshores, battlefields, historic sites, monuments and more that make up the National Park Service had 325.5 million visits , an increase of 4 percent from the year before.

The National Park Service director, Charles F. Sams III, praised the surge of interest in “learning our shared American story throughout the hidden gems of the National Parks System.”

Expecting an even greater turnout in 2024, the Park Service and Recreation.gov , the booking platform for federal land reservations, have implemented new measures to streamline the park experience, manage overcrowding and safeguard the environment.

More parks are requiring reservations

To better avoid congested trails, packed parking lots and overflowing trash cans, additional parks are joining Rocky Mountain , Arches and Glacier National Parks this year in requiring day-use permits, timed entries and other reservations for travelers who wish to visit, particularly during peak hours, holidays and the parks’ high seasons. Yosemite National Park is reinstating a timed-entry system it instituted in 2020, but paused in 2022.

Many park enthusiasts expressed mixed feelings about the reservation policies, with some lamenting a lack of first-come, first-served campsites while others find comfort in knowing they have a confirmed booking. As nearly 75 percent of visitors each year descend on national parks from May to October (and often on weekends), park officials stand by the system.

“In some parks, the level of demand is exceeding the capacity for which infrastructure was designed or is outpacing the National Park Service’s ability to sustainably support visitation,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist for the service. “This trend is resulting in the need to explore new strategies to protect natural and cultural resources and provide opportunities for safe and meaningful visitor experiences.”

It can be confusing.

New to implementing timed-entry reservations for vehicles is Mount Rainier National Park , in Washington, for its popular Paradise and Sunrise Corridors during certain times in the summer season. Reservations cost $2, are valid for one day and must be purchased along with the park ticket, but do not apply for visitors with wilderness permits or camping or lodge reservations. Similar vehicle reservations are now required for certain periods for viewing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii , and driving the Cadillac Summit Road in Maine’s Acadia National Park .

Visitors wishing to hike Old Rag Mountain in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park must obtain a day-use ticket between March 1 and Nov. 30, and in Zion National Park, in Utah, hikers wishing to visit Angels Landing , the dramatic 1,488-foot-tall rock formation, also need to purchase a permit. Fees range from $1 to $6, in addition to the parks’ entrance fees.

As each destination is managed differently, check the park’s webpage for the type of reservation required. Although most bookings can be made through Recreation.gov, some sites, such as Muir Woods National Monument, use a different system.

New features on Recreation.gov

In 2023, Recreation.gov reported that more than 4 million camping reservations and 2 million timed-entry reservations were booked online, and 1.5 million permits were issued. Some 2.9 million new users signed up for the site. With its expanding user base, the booking platform has added 58 reservable national park locations — including 17 campgrounds — such as Central Avenue Walk-in Sites at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Bluff Hike In Camping in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.

Recreation.gov has also improved an alerts feature, piloted in July 2023, that can notify users through email or mobile push notifications when a sold-out campsite becomes available. After Recreation.gov notifies you of availability, you must book the campsite yourself online — and quickly, as you’ll be shown how many other people (possibly hundreds) have received the same alert.

While its customer support center and mobile app are still only available in English, Recreation.gov recently introduced a Spanish language translation option. The Park Service partners with Latino Conservation Week , which hosts nationwide hikes and events on environmental education and in-park stewardship, and will celebrate its 10th year in September.

A limit to the annual America the Beautiful pass

The 2024 America the Beautiful pass no longer allows two owners. The annual interagency pass, which costs $80 and covers the entrance fees for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites (of which roughly 100 do not charge for admission year-round), is now marked by a single signature line on the back of the card. The pass owner must show I.D. and be present with any accompanying travelers wishing to access the park with the pass. (Annual passes issued in 2023 will still be valid until their expiration date.) The pass covers all passengers in a vehicle — up to four adults, and children under 16 are admitted free — or up to four cyclists riding together. Active military or veterans and people with permanent disabilities are eligible for a free lifetime pass; 4th grade students may receive a free annual pass; and senior citizens may purchase a $20 annual pass or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

At the parks, more accessible features, E.V. chargers and new lodging

To better protect against global warming, the Park Service is putting more than $65 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and Great American Outdoors Act into climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Using $15.9 million budgeted for zero-emission vehicle deployment, charging capacity and infrastructure, the Park Service is prioritizing a reduction in carbon emissions, said Mr. Sams, by installing new electric-vehicle charging stations and running electric buses.

An interactive online locator tool created in 2023 shows E.V. charging stations throughout 27 national parks and the type of chargers available. In addition to the tool, every national park page displays alerts on road closures, parking lot capacities, construction work and other incidents.

Mr. Sams also said the Park Service is investing $1.3 billion from the Great American Outdoors Act to improve accessibility features, ranging from a new A.D.A.-compliant visitor center at Morristown National Historic Park in New Jersey to new beach wheelchairs at Sleeping Bear Dunes , Channel Islands and Virgin Islands National Parks . Each destination’s website has an accessibility tab to help visitors plan their trip, and Recreation.gov now has a search filter on its homepage to make it easier to locate accessible accommodations.

New lodging options now available across the country include the Flamingo Lodge , which opened inside Everglades National Park last fall with 24 guest rooms built from repurposed shipping containers. In March, along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Ranch reopened with 11 renovated cabins and a new restaurant. This spring, the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites will welcome its first guests in Rapid City, S.D., the closest major town to Badlands National Park , and opening in May in Idaho is the Yellowstone Peaks Hotel , a 30-minute-drive from Yellowstone National Park. This fall, California-bound travelers planning a visit to General Sherman, the largest known tree on Earth, might book at AutoCamp Sequoia , just outside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park .

Also in California: Those who don’t score a highly coveted (and contentious) spot at the newly reopened High Sierra Camps in Yosemite could book Wildhaven Yosemite in Mariposa, which offers more affordable rates, hiking trails and views of the Sierra Nevadas. Reservations for its first season are available beginning May 1.

Celebrating milestones and a new free entrance day

On the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, visitors can pay tribute to African American heritage at over 100 parks , including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument , and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail . This year also marks 100 years since Indigenous people were recognized as United States citizens. Although many parks have Indigenous programming , Mr. Sams, who is the first Native American to serve as N.P.S. director , suggested visiting Hopewell Cultural Historical Park in Ohio and Whitman Mission Historic National Historic Site in Washington, where he recently brought his daughter.

“In order to celebrate the diversity that makes our country great, we must share the complete story of America, which includes both the successes and challenges encountered on the way to form a more perfect union,” Mr. Sams said.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the National Park Service’s newest free entrance day . Visitors can also take advantage of free admission on April 20, the first day of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the four-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act ; Sept. 28 on National Public Lands Day ; and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day .
