The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is split between two buildings connected by a skywalk. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library is a public research facility that houses a collection of books, Civil War materials, manuscripts, Illinois newspapers, pictures, and maps. The Lincoln collection features more than 1,500 original signed Lincoln documents.

The Dana-Thomas House was built in 1902 by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It was one of his first major Prairie-style houses. This 12,000-square-foot home has 35 rooms and more than 250 art glass doors and windows, along with many other fine details.

Hour-long tours are available most days of the week, and while reservations aren't required, it's recommended to call ahead before your visit. Specialty two-hour tours can also be booked ahead of time, which provide more insight on the architecture and the man behind it all.

The Old State Capitol was the center of Illinois government from 1839 to 1876. Abraham Lincoln served here as a state legislator, pleaded cases before the Supreme Court, and delivered his famous "House Divided" speech at this location.

Now on the National Register of Historic Places , the building was reconstructed to its original grandeur in the 1960s. Reconstructed rotundas, libraries, and the supreme courtroom are found within this historic capitol building, all giving a fascinating chance to jump back in time when Lincoln walked the halls.

Guided 30-minute tours are available, and visitors are encouraged to explore the rooms on their own. Reservations for the tour can be arranged in advance and are strongly recommended.

Washington Park Botanical Garden consists of a greenhouse area, as well as a conservatory that houses tropical plants. The Illinois State Capitol in Springfield is one of the tallest buildings in central Illinois and features an intricate design both inside and out. Visitors are encouraged to tour the State Capitol on their own during operating hours, and guided tours can be reserved ahead of time.

The Illinois State Museum in Springfield was founded in 1877 as a natural history museum. Today, the museum features nearly 100,000 square feet of space, with permanent and changing exhibits on art, anthropology, and natural history. There is also an emphasis on Native American heritage and the history of Illinois.

The three permanent exhibitions include At Home in the Heartland , detailing over 300 years of Illinois history; Changes: Dynamic Illinois Environments , an interactive exhibit of natural history of the region; and Peoples of the Past , an extensive area of dioramas detailing the rich Native American History of Illinois.

Oak Ridge Cemetery is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln ; his wife; and three of their children, Edward, William, and Thomas. Lincoln's Tomb State Historic Site is a 117-foot-tall granite tomb, built to allow space for other members of the Lincoln family as well, although they have chosen not to be buried here.

The interior of the memorial was constructed of marble and features a rotunda and burial room. Also located in the cemetery are memorials dedicated to Illinoisians who served their country from WWII to the Vietnam War.

The Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon in Springfield is a 12-story tower located in Washington Park . The structure has three observation decks at different levels that allow visitors to get a close-up view of the 67 imported bells, as well as the beautiful surrounding green space.

The Carillon is also home to numerous community events, including the International Carillon Festival held each year since 1962. To hear original compositions and pop classics chiming from the bell tower, it's recommended to check out this community attraction when the weekly concerts are scheduled.

Owned and operated by the Illinois Audubon Society, the Margery Adams Wildlife Sanctuary is a 40-acre natural space close to the center of town. A good place to begin a visit is the historic Adams family home, built in the 1850s and now the state headquarters for the Audubon Society.

From here, it's easy to navigate the hiking trails that wind through the property, as well as the different habitats, including prairies, wetlands, and upper woodlands. Birders often flock to Adams Wildlife Sanctuary, as does anyone who appreciates time spent in nature.

Established in 1862, the cemetery at Camp Butler is all that remains of a once thriving Union training grounds, hospital, and prison for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Soldiers from both sides of the Civil War are buried on the site, and today, veterans from other American conflicts also find their final home at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

On the grounds is a circa 1908 Superintendents Lodge, as well as numerous memorials dedicated to soldiers and their sacrifice. Visitors are free to tour the grounds any day from 8am to sundown, and annual ceremonies take place on significant dates, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

This piece of furniture was so significant to their relationship, it was even behind them when they got married there.

Otherwise, Edwards Place Historic Home is a magnificent building, still looking fresh after 180 years.

You can check it out from Tuesdays to Fridays, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and on Saturdays, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

He and Mary Todd spend 17 years living here.

11. Oak Ridge Cemetery

You might’ve seen the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C ., but there’s another very important one, located in Springfield, IL.

At Oak Ridge Cemetery , you can see where Abraham Lincoln was laid to rest.

It’s a fitting tribute to a legendary figure who changed the world for the better.

This is no ordinary gravesite.

It’s a 117-foot tall tomb with a dynamic inside design, complete with a rotunda.

Along with Lincoln, his wife and three of their kids together are buried here.

The man behind this building was Frank Lloyd Wright, the architectural genius.

18. Camp Butler National Cemetery

It’s a very poignant place, as Union soldiers trained and Confederate soldiers were imprisoned as the Civil War raged.

The graveyard is what survived, and other veterans have been laid to rest here.

If you’re visiting Springfield, IL for Memorial Day weekend or Veteran’s Day, you should visit this cemetery.

They have special ceremonies commemorating heroes on these days.

Otherwise, you can come to show your appreciation to specific soldiers or just the people buried here as a whole.

Not every part of a vacation has to be about entertainment.

19. Elijah Iles House

However, your sightseeing has to include a stop at the oldest building in the city.

The Elijah Iles House is a simple-looking home, but it’s role in Springfield’s story makes it far more exciting.

This house was constructed around 1837.

Its namesake, Elijah Iles, was the first shopkeeper in the county.

The home became part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

It’s undergone some exterior renovations, but much of it is authentic to its origins. You can go up the same stairs as Iles.

While it might just be the residence of a Springfield shopkeeper, it holds so much more importance.

Their hours are a bit limited, though, only operating on Wednesdays and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.

Springfield, Illinois is a state capitol lathered with history, ornate urban parks and head-turning architecture. Since 1839, Springfield has been the state capital, a major turning point that led to the town being at the forefront of law and politics through the heart of the 19th century.

It was this period that perhaps left the biggest mark on Springfield. As you’ll see from our list of things to do in Springfield, the capital of Illinois would not be the same without the contributions of the United States 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.

Resplendent architecture dots the town, many were once the grounds where Lincoln lived and practiced. His work, of course, changed the very trajectory of US history. Beyond, you’ll find more stories to discover from state museums to the Dana-Thomas House.

14. Edwards Place

Abraham Lincoln wasn’t the only renowned lawyer to call Springfield home during the 19th century. Benjamin Edwards was a prominent attorney that lived among the likes of Lincoln, Edward Baker and Stephen Douglas, helping to reshape reform and in turn shape America.

He owned Edward’s Place , which was a site for mass gatherings and rallies among supporters. Abraham Lincoln himself gave a notable speech to adoring crowds from the window on the second story.

Guided tours take you from the beautiful surrounding grounds into the Italianate house. You’ll quickly be drawn in by the genuine Victorian-era furnishings and decor owned by both Benjamin and his famous, including the famed Lincoln Courting Couch.

13. Vachel Lindsay House

Built in the 1840s, the Vachel Lindsay House began its storied life with strong connections to the Lincoln family. Before the Lindsay’s made it their forever home, it was bought by C.M. Smith, whose wife was Mary Lincoln’s sister.

But it was the work of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, a revolutionary poet, film critic and illustrator that brought eternal fascination with this delightful building. Vachel Lindsay traveled across the United States wowing crowds with his intricate singing poetry and way with words. However, he always returned home to Springfield.

With a reservation, you can tour the home, learn all about its famous connections before diving into the amazing life of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay.

12. Lincoln Memorial Garden

Rolling down to the edge of Lake Springfield, the Lincoln Memorial Garden is a spacious woodland that takes you into nature as it was in the days of 16th president.

More than just a garden, the vast forest was designed by Jens Jensen, a landscape architect in the 1930s. It memorializes more than just Lincoln, but an era in Springfield before modern expansion. The park recreated a 19th century Illinois woodland, home to local plants and trees.

It’s arguably the best spot in Springfield for a long walk with friends and family. The Lincoln Memorial Garden has five miles of trails that take you through prairies lined with wildflowers and blooming dogwoods.

11. Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices

Springfield lives in eternal celebration of Abraham Lincoln. There’s no better place to learn about the historic president or walk a mile in his shoes than right here. The Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices is a great example of this, being a recreation of the offices in which he practiced law.

Within a historic commercial block in the heart of Springfield, the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices takes you into the working life of Lincoln. It was in these (recreated) offices that he practiced between 1843 and 1852 after his final term as a state legislator.

Your visit begins on the first floor, home to a multimedia exhibit and gallery. The second features the federal court as it was in the 19th century while the third floor explores the chaotic nature of Lincoln’s offices.

10. Illinois Governor’s Mansion

In 1839, Springfield became the Illinois state capital. Shortly thereafter, a new Illinois Governor’s Mansion was constructed. What stands before you today was originally built in 1855 and has been occupied by the Illinois governor every year since.

The eye-catching Italianate mansion has seen a lot over the last 160 years. In fact, remodels, repairs and restorations have ensured that it remains in its current, glamorous condition. Its original 19th century interior has been kept in good condition, making it a highlight for visitors.

Tours into the mansion depart consistently between 1pm and 4pm most weekdays. Come the holiday season, the Governor’s Mansion is draped in colorful decorations.

9. Lincoln’s New Salem

Ready for a quick and easy day trip from downtown Springfield? Get along to Lincoln’s New Salem , 20 miles to the northeast. Before making his name in Springfield and eventually Washington DC, Lincoln grew up in a frontier village known as New Salem.

This attraction is a brilliant recreation of this period town. It puts you in the shoes of Lincoln as he pursued odd jobs such as boatman, postmaster and rail splitter before he rose to prominence as a state legislator.

The range of hands-on exhibits and interactive experiences makes Lincoln’s New Salem feel like a living and breathing town. Just be sure to remember to stock up on 18th century goods and treats at the town’s country store.

8. Washington Park

Much of your time in Springfield will be spent admiring the many amazing buildings, inside and out. But to relish the fresh air and enjoy a change of pace, be sure to add Washington Park to the itinerary.

In the early 1900s, this beautiful expanse of urban greenery was created, bordered by old neighborhoods and a terminus for Springfield’s light rail. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the park remains in pristine condition, harboring the same traits that made it beloved among locals for over a century.

Washington Park features a botanical garden home to almost 2,000 unique plant species and a sprawling conservatory cloaked in a 50 feet glass dome. Afterwards, check out the rose garden and the carillon home to 67 bells.

7. Lincoln Tomb

Nine years after his untimely death, Abraham Lincoln was moved to his final resting place in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. The Lincoln Tomb, which holds his body along with his wife and three of their four children, is an enormous granite monument standing at 117 feet tall.

The towering obelisk is a sight to behold and you’ll spot it long before the tomb itself. The tomb features a circular structure complete with a large plaque and historic flags. You can venture inside and peer down into the burial chamber that lies 10 feet below the shiny marble floor.

Beyond the tomb, you can admire the bust of Lincoln’s head. It’s an impressive recreation of the same bust found at the United States Capitol crypt. His nose rubbed clean from thousands of visitors.

6. Illinois State Capitol

Standing tall above all buildings in Springfield is the Illinois State Capital. At 361 feet tall, the capitol was a necessary creation as the Land of Lincoln grew ever bigger. In 1888, it replaced the Old State Capitol, providing ample room for all branches of government. Such was its size and intricate design that it took two decades to complete.

Surrounded by beautiful green grounds, the Illinois State Capitol boasts a lovely blend of Italianate and French Renaissance architecture. Lathered with a zinc exterior, it shines under the bright Illinois sun. Its striking facade, complete with towering columns and archways, is perhaps overshadowed by the building’s spectacular dome.

Travelers are welcome to explore the interior, including the inside of the dome that showcases pivotal events in state history.

5. Illinois State Museum

Looking beyond local history, the Illinois State Museum explores the full story of the Prairie State. In fact, the more than 13 million artifacts, documents and discoveries take you on a journey 500 million years into the past.

Covering three stories, the Illinois State Museum provides a valuable look into a range of topics. Hands-on and engaging, each exhibit dives into its chosen topic with plenty of high-tech elements, so it won’t just be you and endless paragraphs of information.

Looking at the experience chronologically, you can venture hundreds of millions of years into the past by exploring the Dynamic Illinois Environments exhibit. This includes a look at life when Illinois was underwater. Later, check out modern state history with Peoples of the Past and the Home in the Heartland.

4. Old State Capitol

Built in the 1960s, the Old State Capitol is a faithful redevelopment of the original. Through the heart of the 18th century, the State Capitol building was the center of the Illinois government. It was in those hallowed halls that Abraham Lincoln worked as a state legislator and delivered his renowned speech about a house divided.

Reconstruction over 50 years ago has returned the Old State Capitol to its former esteem. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, you can now explore the supreme courtroom where Lincoln once stood, old libraries and the beautiful rotundas.

While you can explore on your own, visitors are encouraged to make use of the capitol’s 30-minute guided tours.

3. Dana-Thomas House

Architecture continues to be a constant theme in our travels through Springfield, Illinois. It won’t be a surprise then that the illustrious architect, Frank Lloyd-Wright, left his mark on the midwestern town with the Dana-Thomas House .

Construction on this iconic home was completed in 1902. It was here that vivacious socialite, Susan Lawrence Dana, lived until 1828 when after growing increasingly reclusive she pursued the occult.

The marvelous home remains largely untouched over 120 years later. It’s considered one of the best-preserved works by Lloyd-Wright and maintains much of the finer details that made it an immediate local favorite. Highlights include the original Lloyd-Wright furniture, the 60-foot pergola hallway, bowling lanes and sparkling light fixtures.

2. Lincoln Home

Despite living a famous life and playing a vital role in the timeline of US history, Abraham Lincoln owned but one home. The Lincoln Home is a National Historic Site and the singular property that belonged to the memorable president.

The Lincoln Home was constructed in the late 1830s with Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary, calling it home from 1844 to 1861 when Lincoln rose to power. Today the gorgeous Greek revival, with light orange wood panels and dark green shutters, is available to be explored.

The historic site is preserved by park rangers who offer insightful tours of the home on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are free and take you back to a time before Lincoln changed the course of the United States.

1. Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

Going to a presidential library always turns into a joyful surprise. It’s not just rows of books, facts and figures but an incredibly insightful (and interactive) way to get to know certain historic eras. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum covers a vital period.

Creating the expansive museum took more than a dozen years. Each of them was put towards constructing a detailed journey through Lincoln’s life, before and during his presidency. Aided by a fascinating collection of temporary exhibits, the museum takes you back to the 1800s; the events leading to the civil war and the Emancipation Proclamation.

In a city full of history relevant to all travelers, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum stands above it all.

Weekend Itinerary: Fun Things to Do in Springfield, Illinois

As an Illinoisan, born and raised, I used to think it was every Midwesterners rite of passage to come to the Land of Lincoln. The beloved 16th president lived and worked here for a large portion of his life after all. But my latest visit convinced me everyone, not just those hailing from the Heartland, should make the trip to not only learn about the revered Abraham Lincoln but also to experience Route 66 and one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the United States. 

Below is the perfect weekend itinerary with fun things to do in Springfield, Illinois.

Day 1: Friday

Whether you love history, food, or the outdoors, this is the ideal way to spend three days in the capital city. Here are our favorite things to do in Springfield, IL with kids and adults!

Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site

What is Springfield most famous for? Since Springfield’s historic claim to fame is Abraham Lincoln, it’s not a surprise your trip will begin with him! 

Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin in rural Kentucky, moved to southern Indiana when he was 7 years old, then came to Illinois in his early twenties. 

He discovered New Salem, 20 miles northwest of Springfield, by flatboat and eventually relocated to the area.

Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site , a reconstructed village, allows you to step back to the 1830s and experience what pioneer life was like when he lived there.

Pay a visit to the museum inside the visitor center first. Check out the exhibit and watch the movie; it gives great insight for what you are about to experience.

The movie is screened in the auditorium every half hour.

Afterward, head outside to explore. We couldn’t believe how incredibly beautiful and peaceful the property is!

On your walk through the log village, you’ll see green pastures, canopies of trees, and historically furnished buildings including various workshops, stores, houses, a school, and a tavern.  

If you visit June through early August, the park is part of the History Comes Alive summer program and has costumed interpreters on Fridays and Saturdays. Interacting with the villagers really brings the site to life!

One of my favorite experiences was talking to a resident in the town tavern and inn where she was making corn bread.

She showed us where the patrons slept and explained how hard she worked throughout the day to maintain the household and keep things running smoothly.

Lunch at Route 66 Motorheads

For lunch, zip over to Route 66 Motorheads Bar & Grill . Turn when you see the giant Route 66 sign – you can’t miss the “world’s largest” 32-foot-by-32-foot black and white marker beckoning travelers to pull over.

Not only does the restaurant have first-rate food, but the decor and collectibles are impressive too.

There’s a ton of Route 66 and car memorabilia from the owner’s personal collection including a restored silver 1969 Chevy Camaro hanging in the rafters.

And somehow I missed it when we first walked in! It wasn’t until I looked up after we were seated when I noticed the shiny undercarriage so take your time looking around. 

Whether you’re a full-blown gearhead or not, this place is cool.

During lunch, we kept finding new items on the walls to appreciate.  “Look behind the bar!” my nephew points out. It wasn’t the 18 tappers he was excited about, he saw the backend of three classic cars – yellow, blue, and red right in a row. 

Inside the small museum housed in an old filling station, you’ll find original gas pumps, old car parts, a 1915 Ford race car, and vintage signage from iconic Route 66 landmarks like the BelAire Manor Motel, Sonrise Donuts, and Shea’s Gas Station.

Motorheads is a great ‘pit stop’ if you visit Springfield or if you’re ever driving on I-55 from Chicago to St. Louis.

Knights Action Park 

E stablished in 1930 near Route 66, Knights Action Park has been hanging in there for almost 100 years! Still family-owned, what began as a popular golfing range has expanded over the years to an amusement park, water park, and drive-in theatre over the course of three generations. 

The amusement park fe atures a driving range, go-karts, batting cages, The Big Wheel, miniature golf, and an arcade. 

Since it was a hot summer day, we opted for an afternoon of sun and slides at the water park, Splash Kingdom.

Whether you want to relax and soak in some rays or hit the fast-paced rides, there’s something for all ages. 

Choose between eight waterslides, a long lazy river, a giant wave pool, and a few play areas, or do them all! Either way, you’ll have a good time splashing around.

Dinner at D’Arcy’s Pint

It’s time to learn what a Springfield horseshoe is! We heard of this famous Illinois dish but had never tried it.

Everyone told us D’arcy’s Pint is one of the best places to order one so off we went. And we are so glad we did so we can pass along the great suggestion to you. 

The open-faced sandwich is made with thick slices of toasted bread as a base, your choice of meat in the middle, a mega mound of French fries on top, and is doused in a creamy cheese sauce.

Attention: this is not your average order of cheese fries, whatever is in that sauce will cause severe addiction. 

If you want to expand your horizons beyond the delicious fry plate, there’s an extensive menu to choose from. 

Along with authentic Irish fares such as shepherd’s pie and corned beef and cabbage, D’Arcy’s also offers salads, sandwiches, burgers, and pizza. 

My guess is you won’t be disappointed as we enjoyed everything we ordered.

Day 2: Saturday

Breakfast at the old capitol farmers market.

The Old Capitol Farmers Market , established in 1999, is a one-stop spot to sample a few different area vendors. Plus, it’s a great way to support local farmers and restaurants and to get a feel for the community.

Two words come to mind from our morning at the market: fresh and delicious.

We chose our breakfast goodies based on the length of the lines and ended up with a few homerun selections: lemon blueberry bundt and gooey butter cakes from A Lil’ Sumpin’ Special food truck and ham and cheese and chocolate croissants from Incredibly Delicious.

The market runs mid-May through the end of October on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:00 – 12:30 pm. If it’s not open when you visit, spend the morning at Incredibly Delicious , the beloved bakery serves breakfast, lunch, and desserts on 7th street in a beautiful historic mansion.

Springfield Visitors Center

No matter what city or town you are exploring, we always recommend finding the Chamber of Commerce or Visitors Center because they have the best advice, information and maps. 

PRO TIP: Before heading over to the Visitors Center, I suggest stopping at the Lincoln Home Visitors Center to pick up your free tickets for the house tour. They can easily book up over busy weekends so it’s a good idea to reserve tickets early.

The Springfield Visitors Center is no exception; there are a few reasons to swing by. You can pick up an Explorer Passport with Abe’s Hat Scavenger Hunt, a fun game to play while visiting different key attractions throughout the city.

Use the clues to figure out where the hidden hat is located and match the correct color to the correct location at six different sites to collect a prize.

The Passport also has the Route 66 Living Legends of Springfield , featuring current business owners that help keep the Mother Road’s memory alive. You’ll find some of the places we mention here like Motorheads, Cozy Dog, and Knights Action Park but also treasured locations like Maldaners, a fine dining establishment operating since 1884, one of the oldest restaurants on Route 66. 

The Visitors Center is housed in the historic Tinsley Building where Abe practiced law with his partner, William H. Herndon, from 1843 to about 1852. Lincoln worked out of many places throughout the city but the Lincoln-Herndon Law Office is the only one still standing. 

Take a look around the restored law office as well as a recreated U.S. Post Office that was also in the building when Lincoln worked there.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum 

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum is a must-visit attraction in the city. It is impossible not to be captivated by the holograms, three-dimensional exhibits and life-size dioramas on display. 

We have been to a lot of museums throughout the country and have never experienced anything quite like it.

The museum does an excellent job sharing Lincoln’s life story from boyhood to his death and the important legacy he left behind.

If you want to make your visit extra special, plan your trip around the History Comes Alive summer program. Abe and Mary make an appearance on Fridays and Saturdays at the museum.

Union Square Park

Located across the street from the Lincoln Museum, is Union Station, a historic train station that was open for an extended period of time from 1898 to 1971.

While the station is currently closed to the public, the elegant brick building and tall clocktower make for a great backdrop for the lovely Union Square Park. 

Sit on a bench with Lincoln surrounded by colorful flowers, pretty landscaping, a gazebo, and a few other memorable statues.

Lunch at Cozy Dog Drive In

One of the most popular Route 66 attractions in the city is Cozy Dog Drive In – the birthplace of the original corn dog on a stick.

It’s diner meets fast food with a Route 66 flair. From the simple sign outside to the nostalgic surroundings inside, the diner takes you back to simpler times. 

The restaurant is still family-owned by the third generation of the founders and the Cozy Dogs are still made with the same original recipe. 

The dogs are crispier than any other corn dog we’ve had but with a light fluffy inside once you bite into it. It also has a ‘cornier’ flavor than most – more like actual cornbread. Good? You bet!

You know you’ve found a gem of a place when you hear locals and visitors alike enjoying a meal at a long-standing establishment.

Lincoln Home National Historic Site 

Now that you’re fueled up, time to explore the Lincoln Home National Historic Site , the only home Lincoln ever owned. He lived here with his family for 17 years from 1844 to 1861 before moving on to the White House.

The free 25-minute tour provides an intimate look into their daily lives with many pieces inside the home originally belonging to the family. 

Afterward, take a stroll and walk in the footsteps of what many consider the greatest leader our nation has ever seen.

The four blocks in the neighborhood is pedestrian-only and well-preserved with other restored homes – a few open to the public.

Dinner at Obed and Isaac’s Microbrewery and Eatery

Whether you are sitting in the historic mansion where local art hangs on the walls, outside on the quiet patio with lights strung overhead, or at a picnic table next to the chill bocce beer garden, Obed and Isaac’s Microbrewery and Eatery is a fabulous option for a meal. 

Along with the horseshoe, the local favorite, expect salads, flatbreads, burgers, and wrap options on the menu. 

Our delicious picks were salmon filet on a bed of red beans and rice, hand-breaded chicken and buttermilk waffles, a cheeseburger with Angus beef on a pretzel roll, and a turkey club with creamy homemade mac-n-cheese. 

And to wash it all down, adults can order a flagship beer like our favorite hoppy Isaac’s IPA or a rotating seasonal like Blueberry Wheat or Oktoberfest.

Day 3: Sunday

Breakfast at Charlie Parker’s Diner

Ever eat in a Quonset hut before? Driving by, you’d never guess this World War II-era storage shed was home to Charlie Parker’s , a hoppin’ 50’s diner slinging breakfast daily.

Contrary to the plain appearance on the exterior, you are greeted with neon lights, retro red furniture, and a checkered floor on the inside. Vinyl records adorn the walls along with vintage signs and pictures of cultural icons from the twentieth century.

With pancakes the size of a small pizza, mouthwatering biscuits and gravy, and classic hashbrowns, the undercover eatery is the perfect kick-off to your last day in Springfield.

Illinois State Capitol Tour

It’s hard to miss the Illinois State Capitol and its towering silver dome rising above all the other buildings in town. In fact, Illinois has the tallest non-skyscraper capitol building in the United States, even taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.

You’ll learn that fun fact and a few others on the free guided tour.

If you are short on time, you can walk around the first floor on your own but you won’t see all the special paintings, statues, and chambers upstairs on the other levels so I highly recommend the tour.

The current building, completed in 1888, is the sixth capitol in Illinois – one in Kaskaskia, three in Vandalia, and two in Springfield.

The dome is made up of 9,000 pieces of stained glass and at the center, you can see the state seal. 

There’s marble and granite everywhere, exquisite artwork, crystal chandeliers weighing 750 pounds each, ornate railings and elaborate reliefs; it is stunning inside and out.

Lincoln’s Tomb and Oak Ridge Cemetery

Springfield is not only where Lincoln lived and worked, but it is also his final resting place, along with his wife and three of their four sons.

Located within the Oak Ridge Cemetery, the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site – with the exception of rubbing his shiny nose for good luck – is a somber experience but one that should not be missed.

The granite monument and tomb sit on top of a small mound in the back of an expansive grassland. From 9 am – 5 pm daily, the tomb is open to visitors. 

The self-guided tour begins in a rotunda where you’ll turn right through a short hallway lined with statues to his massive marble headstone. Lincoln is buried ten feet below in a vault.

Lake Springfield and the Lincoln Memorial Garden 

Did you know Springfield has a lake? If you’ve driven I-55 you probably noticed the reservoir on the southeast edge of town. We found two places on land to take in the views. 

On the northern end, a boardwalk connects the east and west sides of Tom Madonia Park . It’s a short walk, but fun nonetheless to get over the water and see the ducks, geese and turtles. 

Both areas provide parking, waterfront picnic tables, pavilions, and fishing is allowed. 

On the southern end, the Lincoln Memorial Garden provides 5 miles of hiking trails through the types of prairies and woodlands that would have been present when Lincoln was alive. The 100-acre garden also memorializes him with benches inscribed with his quotes.

While here, do not miss the larger-than-life troll off the main trail between Lake Springfield and the Nature Center. Inspired by the famous visual artist, Thomas Dambo, the gentle giant is 9 feet tall with size 42 shoes. 

If You Have More Time

Even with this extensive itinerary, there are still many other neat things to see and do in the city. Other noteworthy tourist attractions for your next trip or if you are visiting longer than a weekend include the Dana-Thomas House, a Frank Lloyd Wright Design, Illinois State Museum, Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon, and the Old State Capitol, where Lincoln gave his famous House Divided speech. 

Consider Engrained Brewery even if you’re not a beer drinker, the farm-to-table restaurant offers great craft beer but also excellent food.

If you are looking for things to do in Springfield, IL for couples, consider visiting a winery in the area. Danenberger Family Vineyards is known for its award-winning wine and fun live music scene. Take a stroll in Washington Park Botanical Garden along with a dinner at Mariah’s Steakhouse & Pasta.

Where We Stayed – Crowne Plaza Lodging

I can’t tell you how many times, we’ve seen the imposing Crowne Plaza while driving down I-55 on our way to St. Louis. And we finally got to stay there!

With 288 guestrooms on 14 floors, the Crowne Plaza is a huge hotel with a conference center and meeting rooms as well. We stayed in separate rooms so we had the opportunity to experience two different types.

The two-room executive king suite has a lot of extra space in the living room with a pullout sofa, table, refrigerator and half bath.  A sizable bathroom is attached to the bedroom that also has ample space with room for a desk. 

It’s always a bonus to go back to a comfortable room after a long day. And that’s exactly what we found at the Crowne Plaza. The double queen room is spacious as well with comfy beds and a desk.  

Both rooms have plenty of outlets and are nicely decorated. 

One of the coolest features at the hotel is the rooftop terrace where you can take advantage of the indoor pool, hot tub, sauna and the Springfield skyline view. 

Conveniently located just minutes from all the major attractions, Crowne Plaza is a great option for families, couples, or solo travelers.

15 Best Things to Do in Springfield (IL) in 2023 (By a Local)

The state capital of Illinois since 1839, Springfield is the second-largest city outside of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. It’s impossible to talk about this city without bringing up Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, who lived here from 1837 until 1861 when he left for Washington.

You’ll find out all you could want to know about this colossal figure in American history, at the house he lived in for 17 years, at the old state capitol where he argued cases as a lawyer and at his modern presidential library and museum.

Springfield’s appeal also extends beyond its most famous resident, and is home to the Frank Lloyd-Wright’s groundbreaking Dana-Thomas House and of course the present State Capitol, famed for its lofty zinc dome.

I’ve been visiting Springfield several times over the last years (it’s less than a 3 hour drive for me) and discovered much of its attractions and landmarks. Here are, in my experience, the best things to do in Springfield.

1. Lincoln Home National Historic Site

The only home that Abraham Lincoln ever owned is in Springfield. He lived at this Greek Revival-style house at the corner of Eight and Jackson Streets for 17 years before leaving for the White House in 1861.

During my visit I learned that the historic site is managed by the National Park Service and has been restored to its 1860 appearance. I suggest taking the tour, given by National Park Service rangers, which will reveal more about Lincoln the politician and president, but also the husband, father and neighbor.

After I made my way through the house’s various rooms, including Abraham’s bedroom, formal parlor, sitting room and dining room, I went out into the park. On the grounds are the Dean and Arnold Houses, both of which can be visited and there are various outdoor exhibits, including a string of exhibits focusing on Lincoln along Eight Street.

2. Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

Opened in 2005, the presidential library and museum for Abraham Lincoln is the most-visited institution of its kind in the country. This is also quite unlike any other presidential library, telling the life story of the 16th president in creative and surprising ways. I really liked that the exhibits are peppered with artifacts from Lincoln’s life and include the quill pen he used to sign the Emancipation Proclamation, his original hand-written copy of the Gettysburg Address and the gloves that were in his pocket when he was assassinated.

I also saw some intimate personal effects of Mary Todd, like her wedding dress, music box and porcelain items she had at the White House. These are from a collection that numbers in the tens of thousands and is constantly rotated to keep the displays fresh. The museography features detailed reproductions from key settings in Lincoln’s life, like his boyhood home, the White House as it was in 1861 and the presidential box from Ford’s Theater.

3. Dana-Thomas House

The great Frank Lloyd-Wright (1867-1959) was just entering his fabled Prairie period when he designed this sublime home for the lively heiress and socialite Susan Lawrence Dana (1862-1946). Ready in 1902, the Dana-Thomas House is considered the best-preserved Lloyd-Wright project from this time and an icon of American design.

The architect took control of the finest details, and the property retains more than 100 pieces of Lloyd-Wright oak furniture, 100 light fixtures and 250 examples of art glass, much of which features a beautiful sumac motif.

On my tour I marveled at the famous barrel-vaulted dining room and the 60-foot pergola hallway, above a billiard room, bowling lane and walk-in vault.

4. Lincoln Tomb & War Memorials

Abraham Lincoln’s final resting place can be found on the north side of the city at Oak Ridge Cemetery. This granite monument is suffused with symbolism, and made up of a single-story platform edged by a balustrade.

Placed on that terrace is an obelisk, 117 feet tall. Completed in 1874 after six years of work, the memorial was designed by Larkin Goldsmith Mead, and greeting you on a pedestal is a recast of Lincoln’s head from the bust installed at the United States Capitol crypt.

What I noticed was that the nose has been burnished by generations of visitors rubbing it for good luck. The marble-rich interior centers on a rotunda with 16 pilasters, one for Lincoln and each of the 15 presidents who preceded him.

The burial room is towards the rear of the monument, and is dominated by the 7-ton cenotaph, carved from reddish marble.

Oak Ridge meanwhile is the most visited cemetery in the country behind Arlington, and within a few steps of the Lincoln tomb are state memorials for Illinoisans who served and gave their lives in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

5. Illinois State Capitol

As the state grew during the 19th century, Illinois required a new, sixth state capitol, begun in 1868 and completed 20 years later. The architecture blends the French Renaissance and Italianate styles, and is noted for its soaring dome, 405 feet over the city streets and 92.5 feet wide. As with the building’s other roofs, this is clad with zinc, which gives it an unusual sheen in the sun.

You can drop by the center of government in Illinois to admire some wonderful details, like the dome’s interior, which has a frieze depicting scenes from the state’s history, and a stained glass replica of the state seal in the oculus.

And when the legislature is in session you’ll be free to sit in and see politics in action from the balcony.

6. Illinois State Museum

You can get in touch with 500 million years of natural and cultural history at the state museum , which has a massive reserve of 13.5 million objects in its collections.

Across three floors, these are presented to the public in engaging exhibits, which include a lot of interactivity and audiovisual elements.

At Home in the Heartland documents domestic life in the state across 300 years, Peoples of the Past brings a Native American village to life, while Changes: Dynamic Illinois Environments is a hands-on journey through Illinois’ natural history, showing off the strange species that inhabited this region of shallow sea in the Paleozoic Era. I love that they take you through the geological history of Illinois.

Families with younger children will love the Mary Ann MacLean Play Museum, an interactive space where kids can dig for fossils, piece together a baby mastodont, explore a cave and much more.

7. Old State Capitol Historic Site

An obligatory sight on Springfield’s Old Town Square is the fine Greek Revival building that served as Illinois’ state house from 1840 to 1876. It was at this very place that Abraham Lincoln announced his candidacy for the presidency in 1858, as did Barack Obama in 2007.

Lincoln had pleaded cases in front of the state supreme court in this building since 1840, and made his epochal House Divided speech when he announced his candidacy in 1858.

In May 1865 his body was brought back to this same chamber to lie in state. Until the 1960s the building served as the Sangamon County courthouse, after which it was restored to its 19th-century appearance in time for the Civil War centennial. You can come for a 30-minute self-guided tour at regular intervals throughout the day, and staff are posted throughout the building to answer questions.

Tip : After our walk we took by the building, I visited the taproom at nearby Anvil Forge Brewing & Distilling, which is a must-visit if you’re into craft beer.

8. Washington Park

Landscaped at the turn of the 20th century, this rambling park on the west side of Springfield is on the National Register of Historic Places. Washington Park is spread over 150 acres and was initially conceived as a terminus for the trolley line that served the city at the time.

This space is bordered by grand houses in old neighborhoods, and a remarkable amount of features from the park’s original design have made it through to the present day. A must-see attraction within these borders is the botanical garden, growing more than 1,800 different plant species and boasting a conservatory with a 50-foot glass dome.

You can tour a rose garden with 5,000 plants, and come for seasonal displays of poinsettias, Easter lilies, orchids and Japanese bonsai trees. One landmark that I personally found very impressive is the 132-foot Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon looming over the north side of the park, one of the largest structures of its kind in the world and holding 67 bells.

9. Route 66

The original course of one of the world’s most famous roads passes through the center of Springfield on its 2,448-mile journey west from Chicago to Santa Monica, CA .

Remembered for migration west during the Depression years, and then the innovative roadside attractions and businesses of the post-war period, Route 66 continues to shine as a piece of Americana long after it was removed from the highway system in 1985.

At the Springfield Visitors Center you can pick up an Explorers Passport, which can be stamped at businesses imbued with the spirit of the highway’s golden age.

Some of these “Living Legends” are the Cozy Dog Drive In, which has a history going back to 1946, and the Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop (1921), which claims to have the country’s first ever drive-thru window.

10. Illinois State Military Museum

Close to the National Guard base and the Illinois Military Academy is a first-class military museum, established in 1878 and housed in a building that resembles an artillery fort. This is crammed with all kinds of curiosities, and charts the military history of the state from its early citizen-soldiers to the modern armed forces.

Among the standout pieces you’ll find Mexican Santa Anna’s (1794-1876) artificial leg and a target board used by Abraham Lincoln.

Elsewhere you can inspect a trove of uniforms, weapons, vehicles, flags, equipment and photography, and discover fascinating accounts by 19th-century citizen-soldiers, including Lincoln, John A. Logan and Carl Sandburg.

11. Illinois Governor’s Mansion

Springfield is home to the third-oldest continuously occupied governor’s mansion in the United States. This residence has been located in the city since the capital was relocated here in 1839, and the current Italianate building was completed in 1855, with Joel Aldrich Matteson (1808-1873) moving here in 1856.

Over the last 170 years the property has come through remodels, restorations and repairs in 1889, 1897, 1917 and 1971, the latter coming after a long period of disrepair.

The mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and stands as a symbol or leadership for the Illinois State Government but also a superb house museum.

The 19th-century interiors have been retained, and public tours take place between 1 pm and 4 pm most weekdays. Come during the holiday season and the entire mansion is opulently adorned with Christmas decorations.

12. Abraham Lincoln Memorial Garden

On the east shore of Lake Springfield, this 100-acre woodland and prairie garden is a living memorial first laid out in the 1930s by the landscape architect Jens Jensen.

The idea was to plant the estate in a naturalistic style to recreate the Illinois scenery that Abraham Lincoln would have known in his youth.

To that end, only plant communities native to Illinois , Kentucky and Indiana can be found here. There are more than five miles of trails to explore, in an environment that changes character with the seasons. Spring brings dogwood blooms, while the prairie is speckled with wildflowers in summer, and autumn brings stunning red and gold tones. There’s a map of the area near the entrance where we plotted our walk (also free parking).

13. Edwards Place Historic Home

The prominent lawyer and politician Benjamin S. Edwards (1818-1886) owned this palatial Italianate house, one of the two oldest in Springfield. In his long and distinguished career as an attorney, Edwards came into contact with the likes of Edward Dickinson Baker, Stephen A. Douglas and of course Abraham Lincoln.

This house became a venue for rallies and gatherings, and Lincoln himself gave a speech from a second story window. On a guided tour through the recently restored first and second floor I found  elegant period decor and authentic Victorian furniture, much of which belonged to Edwards.

A compelling piece of genuine Lincoln memorabilia I saw is the “Lincoln Courting Couch”, from the home of Edwards’ father Ninian. This is where Lincoln and Mary Todd were married in 1842, and the couch is accompanied by a piano thought to have been played at the ceremony.

14. Knight’s Action Park

One of those family attractions that has a bit of everything, Knight’s Action Park has a history going back to 1930 and is now in its third generation.

The park’s first amenity was a driving range that remains open year round to this day. This is combined with seasonal fun, including a water park with eight slides, carnival rides like the Big Wheel, an 18-hole mini golf course, an arcade (also open all year), batting cages and go-karts.

One recent addition is the twin drive-in movie theater, screening movies and serving delicious snacks April through September.

15. Horseshoe Sandwiches

The Leland Hotel, at the corner of 6th and Capitol, and now an office building, is the birthplace of Springfield’s best-known culinary contribution. The Horseshoe Sandwich was invented in 1928 by the hotel’s chef, Joe Schewska and is now served at casual eateries across the city.

This is an open-faced sandwich, normally composed of Texas toast loaded with a hamburger patty, a rich cheese sauce and french fries. That cheese sauce is more sophisticated than you might think, and, a bit like Welsh rarebit, containing beer, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and cayenne pepper.

As you can tell from the ingredients, this is not a light meal (filled me up quite well), but if you’re in the mood for something hearty, Obed & Isaac’s Microbrewery (500 S 6th St) has one of the best takes on the Horseshoe in the city.

Best suburbs in Springfield, Illinois

The GI Bill of Rights, Ike's interstate system, suburban development, and the growing affordability of cars allowed the suburbs to flourish throughout the mid-20th century. During this era, a new American Dream was established: one with single-family homes, white picket fences, and lush green lawns.

Today, however, the traditional suburb may no longer cater to what 79% of Americans want: walkability. Younger people are especially attracted to neighborhoods where stores, restaurants, and other amenities are a short walk away, according to a National Association of Realtors survey released in 2023 . But a good location comes with a cost.

A Redfin analysis showed homes in 2019 in walkable areas sold for almost 25% more than homes without the same walkability, equivalent to nearly $78,000 more in the national average. Some suburbs offer the amenities of city life, whether through easy transit to big cities (such as Wilmette, Illinois, with easy proximity to Chicago), or college-town amenities such as those found in Claremont, California.

What individual families and people look for in a suburb will vary, of course, with some prioritizing quiet and extra space, even if that means driving more often.

Four Springfield-area schools made its way to the top 200 public high schools in Illinois, according to a new report from U.S. News & World Report .

Nearly 18,000 public high schools nationwide were ranked based on their performance on state assessments, graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college.

Here's a look at the top five schools in the Springfield area fared.

Chatham Glenwood High School

Chatham Glenwood High School boasts the highest rating of schools in the area, with a 82.2 out of 100 score. Ranked 110th in Illinois, the school has a graduation rate of 93% and saw 30% of its students take at least one Advanced Placement exam.

Rochester High School

Coming in second, with a 76.5 out of 100 score, was Rochester High School. The 152nd-ranked school in the state, 95% of its students graduated and 39% participated in an Advanced Placement test.

Williamsville High School

Williamsville High School is the third-highest rated school in the area. With a 96% graduation rate and 27% taking at least one Advanced Placement test, the school was ranked 184th in Illinois.

Porta High School

Porta High School just snuck into the top 200, coming in as the 196th school in Illinois. Porta has a graduation rate of 78% and 24% of its students took at least one Advanced Placement test.

Pleasant Plains High School

The fifth-best school in the area, and 218th overall in the state, is Pleasant Plains High School. The school has a graduation rate of 92% and 33% of its student population took at least one Advanced Placement test.
