Want tickets for Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour? These tips will help you score seats

beyonce renaissance tour sign up

Beyoncé is the queen of timing.

Just days before Sunday's Grammy Awards , where she is poised to potentially become the most awarded entertainer in the show's history, the singer announced Wednesday a new world tour to support her "Renaissance" album.

Shows start May 10 in both European and North American cities and wrap up Sept. 27 in New Orleans. Demand for tickets is ravenous: "Fan demand already exceeds the number of available tickets by more than 800%," promoter Live Nation said in a news release a day after the tour's announcement, when seven cities were given one more date each.

Priority will go to concertgoers with Verified Fan and other membership-based accounts. Here's how you can get your hands on tickets.

When do Beyoncé tickets go on sale?

Ticketing begins Feb. 6. But rather than put tickets for all shows on sale together, Beyoncé is rolling on-sale dates to try and avoid ticketing system meltdowns that have plagued other big acts of late, notably Taylor Swift.

Be aware that for some, getting tickets will require signing up for one of a variety of Verified Fan platforms by Feb. 3.

How to get Beyoncé tour tickets, including presale

You'll want to make sure you fit into one of these four groups to have the best shot at getting seats for Beyoncé's U.S. performances:

  • Ticketmaster Verified Fan Onsale: Sign up for an account in order to be eligible for these tickets, which are aimed at ensuring that fans who plan to attend the show get seats ahead of re-sellers.
  • BeyHive Verified Fan Presale: Registered members of Beyhive, Beyoncé's superfan club, will be eligible to register for Verified Fan Presale during applicable registration windows.
  • Citi Presale powered by Verified Fan: Citi cardmembers can access this presale by registering with their Citi card number .
  • Verizon Up Presale: Members of the cellular provider's Verizon Up program are being offered an exclusive presale for the tour.

Set up your Verified Fan account now

Don't delay. Beyoncé is putting tickets for her U.S. tour dates on sale in three groups: A, B and C. The deadline for fans in Group A cities to sign up for a Ticketmaster Verified Fan accounts is Feb. 3.

Increasingly, ensuring that you have a Verified Fan account is the best way to avoid being left empty-handed or having to go to the secondary market, where prices are often sky high.

Be patient. When top performers announce tours, many rush into action to sign up for Verified Fan accounts, causing delays on "virtual lines."

One more tip. Be sure to check either Beyoncé’s website or the sites of the various ticketing option outlets for the latest location and date updates as a few cities that were previously announced have changed.

How much will Beyoncé tickets cost?

Ticket prices have not yet been announced. But one thing to keep in mind is  dynamic pricing . That's when, with the prior agreement of the artist, some of the best seats in the house are subject to real-time market demand.

How high can tickets go? When Bruce Springsteen allowed some of the best seats to his upcoming tour to be dynamically priced, some went as high as $4,000 and many fans were outraged. But sales figures released by Ticketmaster reveal that about 12% of tickets were so-called Platinum, or subject to dynamic pricing.

Over the years, top acts such as Taylor Swift, Drake, Paul McCartney, Ye and Harry Styles have embraced dynamic pricing. Currently, artists such as The Weeknd, Alicia Keys and Carrie Underwood also are offering their best seats – often dubbed Platinum Tickets – through this variable pricing system.

How to get presale tickets for Beyonce’s Renaissance tour

It is time.

The first batch of presale tickets for Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour is going live Monday, Feb. 6. Competition is already through the roof for tickets to the U.S. leg of the tour , which kicks off in July.

“Fan demand has significantly exceeded the number of tickets available based on registration numbers,” according to Live Nation , so those who registered on Ticketmaster as a Verified Fan (which closed Feb. 5) will be selected via a lottery system to either be waitlisted, or to be given a unique access code.

People with an access code will have the chance to try for tickets, but they're still available on a first come, first served basis.

How to get Beyoncé presale tickets for Group A

North American ticket sales have been staggered into three groups based on location. Tickets for the Group A presale, which opens Feb. 6, include shows in the following cities, according to Live Nation:

  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • East Rutherford, New Jersey
  • Houston, Texas
  • Inglewood, California
  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Toronto, Canada
  • Vancouver, Canada
  • Washington, D.C.

On Feb. 5, everyone who registered for Group A should have received an email either giving them a unique access code, or placing them on the waitlist.

People who were given unique access codes as part of the BeyHive Presale are able to try for tickets on Feb. 6.

Qualified Citi debit or credit card holders can participate in the Citi Presale for Group A on Feb. 7 and 8. The Canadian shows in Toronto and Vancouver will not be participating in the Citi presale, Live Nation noted on their website.

After those presales, general Verified Fan tickets will go on sale for the U.S. on Feb. 11.

According to Ticketmaster , different presales have different start times depending on which show you are trying to attend. It recommends checking the individual event page for the show you would like to see to find out when the presale for that event begins.

When are Group B and Group C presale tickets available?

Registration for Group B and Group C closed Feb. 5 due to high demand, Ticketmaster said in a blog post . Those who registered in time will be emailed the day before the presale begins for their group. They will be given an access code or waitlisted.

Group B dates:

  • Registered people are emailed: Feb. 12
  • BeyHive Presale: Feb. 13
  • Citi Presale: Feb. 14-15
  • Verified Fan tickets on sale: Feb. 18

Group C dates:

  • Registered people are emailed: Feb. 19
  • BeyHive Presale: Feb. 20
  • Citi Presale: Feb. 21-22
  • Verified Fan tickets on sale: Feb. 25

Everything to Know About Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour

Atlantis The Royal Grand Reveal Weekend 2023 - Beyonce Performance

B eyoncé’s fans have been waiting for this day: the pop megastar finally announced that she will embark on the long-awaited Renaissance World Tour. She uploaded a post to Instagram early Wednesday morning with the caption: “RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR 2023,” and her official website has been updated to show the tour dates. The tour starts in May in Sweden and will hit Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Poland, before she makes her way to North America. The first date stateside will be in Philadelphia, Pa., in July and the tour will hit the major U.S. cities before wrapping up in New Orleans, La., on Sept. 27.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

Following the release of her seventh album, Renaissance , in July, fans have been itching for a tour announcement, in addition to music videos to accompany the songs. Beyoncé’s last solo tour was the Formation World Tour back in 2016 to support her sixth album, Lemonade . Following that, she went on the On The Run Tour with her husband, Jay-Z, in 2018 after releasing their joint project, Everything Is Love . The announcement of a new tour just before the Grammy Awards on Sunday raises suspicion that Beyoncé might be performing or, at the very least, attending the night’s festivities.

The singer is nominated for nine Grammys at this year’s awards ceremony, which are set to take place on Feb. 5 in Los Angeles. This year, she is up against Adele for multiple awards, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. There has been speculation about whether or not Beyoncé would be performing ever since the nominations were announced. The last time fans saw her perform on a major televised stage was at last year’s Oscars ceremony, where she performed “Be Alive” from the King Richard movie for the first time.

Read More: 6 Takeaways from Beyoncé’s New Album Renaissance

Beyoncé most recently took the stage for a private concert at the opening of the Atlantis The Royal resort in Dubai in January. However, she did not perform any songs from Renaissance . Also, given that Beyoncé unveiled the album’s title on Instagram as “act [one],” her dedicated fanbase has been busy theorizing what acts two and three might be. Some have hypothesized that the tour would be act two and then a concert movie would be act three. Others have ventured to guess that this is a three-part album and that Renaissance was just the beginning.

Tickets for the concert will not be an easy get if Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is any indication. Beyoncé’s fans can click on the date they would like to attend to register for Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program and will then have to wait to see if they are given an access code to purchase tickets to the event. With Verified Fan and the “unexpected” traffic the pre-sale brought to the site, many Swifties likened the ticket-buying process to a warzone. The disastrous rollout drew ire from Swift’s fans and political officials alike. After the ticketing fiasco, the Senate held a hearing to look into whether Live Nation and Ticketmaster have a monopoly over the ticketing industry. This, coupled with the technical problems that Swift fans faced, have Beyoncé fans worrying that finding their way to an actual concert will be nothing short of an ordeal.

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour

The star’s first solo tour since 2016 will start May 10 in Stockholm.

Beyoncé smiles widely at the Grammys podium, wearing a black dress with a plunging neckline.

By Joe Coscarelli

For the first time since 2016 — a world before Beychella , Covid-19 and “Renaissance” — Beyoncé will headline a solo tour, the singer announced in a social media post on Wednesday.

Beginning on May 10 in Stockholm, and continuing in Europe through June before coming to North America, the Renaissance World Tour, in support of her seventh solo album, will run for at least 40 dates, largely in stadiums, according to dates posted to Beyoncé’s website . The tour includes one night at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (July 29) and one at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. (Sept. 2) amid stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto, Atlanta, Phoenix and Miami.

Limited tickets for certain tour dates will go on sale beginning Monday for members of Beyoncé’s BeyHive fan club, followed by the staggered release of additional tickets by market, using a complex registration system for various tiers of buyer.

The tour, produced by Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation, will use Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan system , which aims to limit bots and professional scalpers, marking one of the first major tests for Ticketmaster since extraordinary demand for early tickets to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour last year led to fan backlash and regulatory scrutiny . At a Senate Judiciary hearing last month spurred by the botched presale, artists, fans and politicians cast Live Nation Entertainment, the concert industry giant that owns Ticketmaster, as a monopoly that hinders competition and harms consumers.

Beyoncé’s shows will be the singer’s first live events available to the public since the On the Run II tour with her husband, Jay-Z, in 2018, tied to the surprise release of a joint album, “Everything Is Love,” by the duo billed as the Carters. Beyoncé last toured alone behind her previous solo album, “Lemonade,” in 2016. Two years later, she headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

That show — which went on to be released as “Homecoming” (2019), a live album and concert film — was called “rich with history, potently political and visually grand” in a review by the New York Times critic Jon Caramanica. “By turns uproarious, rowdy, and lush. A gobsmacking marvel of choreography and musical direction.”

In the years since, Beyoncé has surfaced intermittently, including with songs like “Black Parade,” which won a Grammy Award for best R&B performance, and “Be Alive,” which appeared in the movie “King Richard” and was nominated for an Oscar. Last year, in a taped performance, Beyoncé performed the song at the 94th annual Academy Awards.

But the singer made a return to the pop mainstream in earnest with the July 2022 release of “Renaissance,” a dance-floor-oriented album that she said was inspired by the L.G.B.T.Q. community and has spawned hits like “Break My Soul” and “Cuff It.” At the Grammy Awards on Sunday, Beyoncé is nominated nine times , with a chance to become the most-awarded artist in history.

Upon its release, the singer called “Renaissance” part of a “three act project” that she recorded during the pandemic. “My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment,” she wrote of the album, which was billed as Act I. “A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom.”

Major music touring has largely recovered, especially at its highest levels, since the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the industry trade publication Pollstar , touring grossed a record-setting $6.28 billion last year, up more than 13 percent from 2019, due in part to pent-up fan demand, inflation and major acts like Bad Bunny, Elton John and Harry Styles.

In addition to Beyoncé’s shows, this year will see blockbuster tours from artists including Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Metallica, Morgan Wallen and Madonna.

Last month, Beyoncé proved more polarizing than usual when she headlined the grand opening of a luxury hotel in Dubai, performing for an invite-only collection of guests, including influencers and journalists.

While some fans decried the optics of taking a major payday in a place that criminalizes homosexuality — “Beyoncé’s Dubai performance isn’t just an affront to LGBTQ+ fans, but workers’ rights in the UAE,” The Guardian declared — others noted that the singer’s set list did not yet include songs from “Renaissance.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the year Beyoncé headlined Coachella. It was 2018, not 2016.

Why Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Tour Is a Stadium-Shaking Triumph

By Brian Hiatt

Brian Hiatt

Beyoncé ‘s Renaissance tour , a stadium-shaking dance party built around last year’s album of the same name , won’t begin its U.S. run until a July 12 show in Philadelphia, but thanks to TikTok and YouTube, stateside fans already have a decent sense of the show. It begins with Beyoncé essentially serving as her own opening act via a mini set of ballads before exploding into a show built around the Renaissance album, with songs from her previous albums worked in among the new hits (or in some cases, as with a taste of “Sweet Dreams” in “Alien Superstar,” during them).

In the episode, Brittany Spanos joins host Brian Hiatt to discuss the discourse around and experience of the tour on TikTok and elsewhere, while Daily Telegraph music critic Neil McCormick — who just gave five stars to Beyoncé’s performance in the Welsh capital of Cardiff — offers a firsthand look at the tour. “Beyoncé has spent 25 years doing what she does at an incredibly high level and always trying to up up the ante,” says McCormick. “This is Beyoncé showing who’s the queen, and it’s at the top level of where a show has ever, ever been.”

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour

By Evan Minsker and Allison Hussey

Beyonc

Beyoncé has announced that she’s touring in support of her latest album, Renaissance . The tour begins with a European leg in May, followed by dates in Canada and the United States that extend from from early July through late September. It’s her first tour since her 2018 co-headlining On the Run II Tour with Jay-Z behind their collaborative album, Everything Is Love , and her first headlining tour since 2016’s Formation World Tour behind Lemonade . The Renaissance World Tour is produced by Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation. See all of the dates below.

Renaissance arrived July 29, rising swiftly to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and marking Beyoncé’s seventh album to summit the albums chart. It is the first act in what will be a three-part series, she has indicated.

Beyoncé hinted at her world tour in late October, during the fifth annual Wearable Art Gala, where the raffle included “ a UNIQUE experience ” to see her on the Renaissance tour. Purported images from the auction featured descriptions of the summer 2023 trek. Valued at $20,000, the package included first-class plane tickets, a three-night hotel stay, two concert tickets, and a guided backstage tour from Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles aka Miss Tina. Beyoncé was reportedly in attendance at the gala. In January, she performed at the opening of a new luxury resort in Dubai, but did not play any Renaissance material at the private concert . It was her first live performance since 2020.

Since sharing Renaissance , Beyoncé has made a few adjustments to the album; she replaced ableist lyrics in “ Heated ,” and removed an interpolation of Kelis ’ “Milkshake” on “Energy” after Kelis said she was not informed by Beyoncé and her team that her music was going to be used on the new album. Beyoncé also dropped Honey Dijon and Madonna remixes of “ Break My Soul .”

In 2019, Beyoncé released Homecoming: The Live Album . The next year, she shared Black Is King , a visual album based on her 2019 soundtrack for The Lion King: The Gift . (Beyoncé voiced adult Nala in the CGI remake film.) On Juneteenth of that year, she surprise-released “ Black Parade ,” which would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance . At the same ceremony, she also won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song (for her feature on the remix of Megan Thee Stallion ’s “ Savage ”), as well as Best Music Video (for The Gift ’s “ Brown Skin Girl ”). “ Be Alive ”—her contribution to the King Richard soundtrack—was nominated for an Oscar at last year’s ceremony.

Beyoncé is nominated for nine honors at the 2023 Grammy Awards : Record of the Year , Song of the Year , and Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Break My Soul”; Album of the Year and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for Renaissance ; Best R&B Performance for “Virgo’s Groove”; Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Plastic Off the Sofa”; Best R&B Song for “Cuff It”; and Best Song Written for Visual Media for “Be Alive.”

Beyonce Renaissance Album

It’s time. Beyoncé ‘s Renaissance World Tour — her first jaunt in nearly five years — has officially kicked off at Stockholm’s Friends Arena where she’s set to perform for nearly three hours at the Swedish capital.

The stadium trek will continue across Europe through June, with the North American leg kicking off in Toronto on July 8. Club Renaissance will run for at least 40 dates, mainly in stadiums, and make stops at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (July 29) and at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. (Sept. 2) amid dates in Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto, Atlanta, Phoenix and Miami.

Beyoncé performed her first full concert in four years  in January at the new Atlantis Royal Resort in Dubai. It was an elaborate and highly theatrical performance — for which sources say she was paid some $24 million — with an all-female orchestra, a battery of dancers, a small lake, fireworks, a 50-foot hydraulic platform, three costume changes for the singer and a guest appearance from her and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy, but no songs at all from “Renaissance.”

Her last official tour was the “On the Run II” tour with Jay in 2018, which was tied to their joint album, “Everything Is Love,” by the duo billed as the Carters. That same year, she headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival but her last solo trek was behind her previous solo album, “Lemonade,” in 2016.

Beyoncé performs during the opening night of the Renaissance World Tour on 10 May at Friends Arena in Stockholm, Sweden

Beyoncé: Renaissance World Tour review – a dizzying three-hour spectacular

Friends Arena, Stockholm Queen Bey’s first solo headline tour in seven years is a lavish leap forward for live entertainment, dripping with sci-fi disco decadence, sex and Black pride

E ven without Taylor Swift’s Ticketmaster-melting Eras Tour nipping at her heels, it wouldn’t do for a star as compulsively ambitious as Beyoncé to merely protect her status as the greatest pop show on Earth. Not when her first solo headline tour since 2016 could instead push 21st-century live entertainment another lavish leap forward.

Titled after the Texan’s disco glitter bomb post-pandemic party album of the same name , Renaissance is a monster blockbuster concert experience on a different plane. Fifty-seven stadium dates globally, starting in Stockholm, are projected to gross as much as £1.9bn ($2.4bn) by the time the tour ends in New Orleans late September. Dripping with sci-fi disco decadence, sex, body positivity and feminine Black pride, the near three-hour spectacular plays out in front, behind and, at times, inside a football-pitch-wide high-definition video screen designed to assault the senses at dizzying scale.

The BeyHive, as Beyoncé’s fans collectively style themselves, are buzzing pre-show as they flood into the venue from around the world for their first chance proper to see their queen live since 2018’s On the Run II co-headliner with Mr B, Jay-Z. Dressed head to toe in official tour merch, including a cap and hoodie both emblazoned with the word “THIQUE”, Mykwain Gainey has been to 20 Beyoncé shows over the past two decades and has spent nearly £2,000 to fly here from New York. “To see her transcend, and become what she has become, especially as a Black woman, is exciting,” he enthuses.

Beyoncé in Stockholm on Wednesday. With many of the show’s 36 songs abridged, the tempo was relentless.

Brazilian Yhes Bezerra wears a spangly cowboy hat like the one sported by Beyoncé in the tour poster, except theirs is homemade; sticking on the thousands of tiny mirror panels took nine hours. They were determined to come to the opening night to avoid social media spoilers about what to expect. “I want everything to be a surprise,” Bezerra smiles.

Beyoncé appears first in a video cut scene, laid out luxuriously across the giant screen semi-naked in dimensions big enough to be visible from space. And yet, once she emerges in the flesh – all sequins, shoulder pads and that megawatt smile, drinking in the crowd’s screams – she begins disarmingly with a slew of her rawest soul songs. By the second, Flaws and All, she already appears to be fighting back tears, whether of release or gratitude or both. It’s an opening that seems designed to strip away artifice, if only to provide some sharp contrast for the heavily technologically augmented spectacle about to follow.

Harking back to early house and techno and the ecstatic utopia of the dancefloor, a segment dedicated to the Renaissance album ensues with Beyoncé done up something akin to the Maschinenmensch in Metropolis. She grinds with a dozen backing dancers to the jittery reggaeton of her boss bitch mission statement I’m That Girl, then dances with some actual robots (a pair of mechanical arms) during Cosy. Were all that not semi-hallucinogenic enough, Alien Superstar interpolates narcissistic anthem I’m Too Sexy by 90s dance-pop twosome Right Said Fred.

Beyoncé performing on Wednesday

With many of the setlist’s whopping 36 songs abridged, the tempo is relentless. Blink and you’ll miss dancers popping out of the stage like champagne corks, or Beyoncé’s powerhouse band getting wheeled into occasional view on a tall stepped riser (shades of Beychella), such as during Chic-style feelgood funk workout Cuff It. “Y’all having a good time, Stockholm?” our host inquires, wiping an imperceptible bead of sweat from her brow. “Me too.”

Black Parade finds Beyoncé cruising the stage atop what looks like a kind of lunar rover. Somewhat comically, it exits up the gusset of a pair of massive splayed legs. Later she sings Plastic Off the Sofa stretched out in a clamshell. Come Crazy in Love, the show finally gets the enormous disco ball it seems to have long craved, dangled from the rafters for only a bit longer than the time it takes for the crew to get it up there and back down.

Bass-quaking, envelope-pushing Black power anthem Formation is a powerful political statement in any setting. Performed in a kind of virtual cathedral, horny southern rap and gospel cocktail Church Girl (sample lyric: “drop it like a thottie, drop it like a thottie”) might just be intended to provoke. But by Beyoncé’s own standards, it’s hard not to read Renaissance as a show much lighter on overt socio-political messaging than it is sheer, unfettered, mildly chaotic indulgence. And who could blame her?

In a final, unsubtle, retro-futuristic fanfare, Bey summons Bianca Jagger’s iconic Studio 54 moment by gliding through the air on a glitter-encrusted white horse while Summer Renaissance – which samples Donna Summer’s I Feel Love – blares. The disco history references may or may not be landing with the mostly young BeyHive, but that’s not really the point. By rewiring dance music past in a sensory overload of truly stunning ambition and stamina, Beyoncé is writing some history of her own.

The Renaissance World Tour continues until 27 September, see https://tour.beyonce.com/ for dates

AMC Theaters Expands Distribution Team After Taylor Swift Success

F ollowing the success of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" and "Beyonce: Renaissance," AMC Theaters is expanding its newly established film distribution team in its efforts to sign deals with music artists to bring concert films directly to cinemas.

As part of that expansion, the chain has hired Stephanie Terifay in the newly created position of vice president of Distribution. She will be responsible for engaging the music industry to develop future projects and tailoring distribution strategies and marketing plans to reach out to fans.

Terifay joins AMC from Fandango, where she led the integrated marketing team and worked closely with Hollywood studios, independent distributors, exhibitors and brand partners on a variety of films. Prior to Fandango, she worked as part of the marketing leadership of the Sundance Institute, Film Independent, Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Los Angeles Clippers and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

AMC has also promoted 13-year company veteran Kevin Arnold to vice president of Programming Promotions & Partnerships, where he will oversee promotional strategies that drive moviegoer engagement. Both Arnold and Terifay will report to Nikkole Denson-Randolph, SVP of Content Strategy and Inclusive Programming, who oversees the new distribution wing.

"The remarkable success of AMC Theatres Distribution last Fall opened an exciting new business for AMC, and we are thrilled to have Stephanie Terifay's expertise and enthusiasm build upon the brilliant leadership of Nikkole Denson-Randolph," said Elizabeth Frank, chief content officer. "Through the addition of Stephanie and the much-deserved elevation of Kevin Arnold, AMC Theatres Distribution is well positioned to continue to deliver exciting and compelling content to moviegoers at AMC and across the industry domestically and internationally."

AMC stunned the industry when it abruptly announced last September that it would partner with indie distributor Variance Entertainment to release Swift's concert film "The Eras Tour" in theaters without the support of a major Hollywood studio. With studios pulling films out of the autumn release slate, Swift and AMC threw exhibitors a life preserver as "Eras Tour" grossed $250 million worldwide, a box office record for concert films.

That was followed in December by Beyonce's concert film "Renaissance," which earned a comparatively modest $43.9 million worldwide that was still enough to rank it among the Top 10 highest grossing concert films ever.

CMAs Attendee Recalls Audience Member Shouting Racist Jeers at Beyonce During 2016 Performance

Beyoncé was the victim of racist vitriol spewed from a fan at the 2016 Country Music Awards, a new CNN documentary reveals.

The network is set to unveil Call Me Country: Beyoncé & Nashville’s Renaissance on Friday, April 26, and in the film, one fan recalled an ugly reaction from the crowd as Beyoncé, 42, debuted her “Daddy Lessons” remix with the Chicks.

“An audience member in front of me proceeds to say, ‘Get that Black bitch off the stage right now,’” attendee Tanner Davenport claimed in the documentary.

Davenport, the codirector of the Black Opry, a website that raises awareness for Black country artists, called it a “gut punch” to see that in the eyes of some, Beyoncé was not welcome at the CMAs.

“I remember instantly kind of being taken back to reality in that moment,” he added. “To realize that there’s, like, a threat of Black people being in this genre for some reason.”

Those outside of Bridgestone Arena in Nashville that night also got a look at the ugly side of country fandom as social media soon became awash in negative messages aimed at Beyoncé, ranging from criticizing her politics to blatantly racist remarks.

The CMAs themselves even came under fire. Though a rep for the event called Beyoncé’s performance “a highlight of the evening” at the time, the CMAs soon deleted any mention of it from their social media accounts. They claimed it was because the footage used was unapproved, but critics viewed it as the CMAs bowing to the pressures of a vocal, racist minority.

While outsiders can debate the meaning behind the CMAs’ response, Beyoncé herself has made it clear she will not back down . She implied that the incident was a key inspiration behind her new country album, Cowboy Carter .

“This album has been over five years in the making,” she wrote via Instagram in March. “It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t.”

“The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me,” she continued. “[ Cowboy Carter ] is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”

Beyoncé became the first Black artist to top the Top Country Albums chart when Cowboy Carter debuted in March. It also came out at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Call Me Country: Beyoncé & Nashville’s Renaissance will be available to stream Friday, April 26, on Max.
