Constructed in the 17th century, this fort unravels the ingenuity and artistic prowess of the artisans, inviting visitors to delve into its hallowed corridors and immerse themselves in the era of Rajput grandeur.

A tapestry of artistic brilliance

Bhangarh Fort holds countless wonders within its ancient walls. Built by the powerful Rajputs, who ruled the region for centuries, the fort stands as a testament to their enduring legacy. Perched atop a hill and surrounded by dense forests, Bhangarh Fort served as a strategic location for defence and trade. Its positioning along a former trade route connecting Delhi to Gujarat further enhanced its significance. Every nook and cranny of the fort exudes artistic brilliance. The intricate design, beautiful architecture, and exquisite planning showcase the skill and creativity of the artisans. Particularly noteworthy is the town planning, castle hierarchy, market system, Havelis and the beauty of several temples in the area it is dotted with. The Someshwar temple and Gopinath temple are situated in the Bhangarh fort complex. The fort boasts several gates, each carrying its own symbolism. The Hanuman Gate, dedicated to the revered Hindu deity Hanuman, is believed to bring good fortune to those who enter through it. Meanwhile, the Lahori Gate, named after the nearby town of Lahore, serves as the fort's grand entrance.

Haunting mystique

Local folklore tells of a powerful sorcerer named Singhia, who fell in love with Princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh. When his advances were rejected, Singhia cursed the fort, prophesying eternal unhappiness for its inhabitants. Bhangarh Fort has gained notoriety as the most haunted place in India. Legends of ghostly encounters and eerie ruins have attracted thrill-seekers and curious visitors alike. The Archaeological Survey of India strictly prohibits entry after sundown. Another folklore mentions the fort's intriguing history intertwines with a prophetic warning. Guru Bala Nath, a revered ascetic, advised King Madho Singh that the fort's shadow should never touch him. Tragically, when the shadow engulfed the ascetic's abode, the fort's fate was sealed, leading to a series of collapsed roofs in nearby structures.

Bhangarh Fort Rajasthan with kids? No. Never. It’s haunted! Bhangarh Fort is nothing like it’s infamous for but a historical marvel and pretty safe to be explored with kids. Read on to know how we explored Bhangarh ka Kila with our kiddo.

Though our grandparents and parents abandoned the idea of ghosts still we loved listening to ghost stories during our childhood days.

You must be an exception if you don’t find ghosts enchanting.

The basic human craving for the unknown and mysterious can’t be denied. The craving for adventure…This hunger and curiosity to unfold the truth usually take us to places that not too many people really attempt to visit.

This curiosity took us to Bhangarh Fort, which is listed among the most haunted historical places in the world.

Bhangarh doesn’t need any introduction. It is fairly well-known now, thanks to the internet.

It has been talked about, written about, and myth-ed about innumerable times. People enjoy reading or listening to haunted stories about it but few dare to actually visit and see it. It’s counted among the spookiest ghost towns in India.

Of the many legends, there are two that are well-known among the natives. One is the legend of Princess Ratnavati and Jadugar Singhia and the other is a curse of Guru Balu Nath.

Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan

During our visit to Jaipur last week, we dubiously added Bhangarh to our to-visit list.

When we asked a person at our hotel about Bhangarh Fort; he found it outlandish and tried to convince us not to visit the fort but we were determined. My daughter was more excited than I was.

Exploring the haunted Bhangarh Fort with kids seems like a grotesque idea to others, however, the fort if visited during daytime with a little caution is good for kids.

Early the next morning, we started driving towards the fort which is around 90 km from Jaipur .

We took the help of Google Maps because of the lack of firsthand information. Roads were narrow and deserted. We felt strange to see that there were not many cars on our route; traffic was moving in the opposite direction.

Though I am really skeptical of my belief in the paranormal and supernatural powers, however, the experience on the road kind of intensified the feeling of adventure. And we knew that the place is sparsely visited because of its infamous status.

It was a lovely drive with beautiful rural landscapes, however, I felt a bit of uneasiness about what we would confront at the fort.

It was truly a journey to the unknown, unexplained, and unreal.

There were few stretches where ours was the only car on narrow and bumpy roads with almost no soul in sight.

We kept ourselves busy explaining the culture and customs of Rajasthan to our daughter.

There are people who claim that they were bewitched or hounded or punched or whatnot. And there are people who reject the whole idea as a trick to attract tourists.

Believers respond positively and non-believers cease the concept. Whatever the truth is, adding a haunted label to the place definitely turns even a dilapidated fort into a popular tourist destination.

An intelligent publicity stunt. These myths attract people from around the world to the ruins of Bhangarh.

The Archeological Survey of India has put up a board on the fort gate saying that it is prohibited for tourists to stay inside the fort after sunset and before sunrise.

Just at the entrance, the fort has a marketplace (Johri Bazar), with rows of shops and houses (including nartikiyon ki haveli on the right) lined on either side, which is in ruins now; roofless.

The place feels a bit spooky not because of its paranormal status but because of the sadness and poignancy that wraps it.

Bhangarh doesn’t really seem to be protected as an Archaeological site in any sense.

The deterioration is apparent as one moves up.

In India , religion is everywhere.

Despite the ghostly image, there were people performing religious rituals in different rooms of the fort.

The group of villagers was performing a nasty ritual of punishing themselves for wrongdoings or to make their God happy.

ASI isn’t making any effort to curb these happenings inside the fort maybe because they don’t really wanna hurt anyone’s religious beliefs or sentiments.

Two young boys entered the palace with bags on their shoulders; talking in hushed voices while we were coming out of the palace.

My curiosity took over; I had to know what brought them with bags here. They declared that they were going to spend the entire night at the fort.

They chuckled saying it’s a nice place for camping. I wished them luck and waved goodbye.

I investigated every room, every aisle, and every corner but was disenchanted.

Out of curiosity, I spoke to the Hindu priest staying within the fort premises and the guard on duty.

They rejected the idea of ghosts. Priest philosophized “There is no spirit more dangerous than man”.

They claimed that the wild animals come down from the mountain ranges at night from the neighboring forests like Sariska and the fort serves as a night shelter for them; sounds created by these wild animals make this fort a scary place.

Also, the fort has no provision for electricity, which makes the ruins atrocious at night.

Gopinath Temple has the same elaborateness of carving that Rajasthan is known for.

Strangely, the idols of God were missing.

Hanuman Temple and Someshwar Temple are also on the Fort premises.

At the end of the visit, nasty tales about the fort seem unbelievable; there was an uncomfortable feeling though.

Like everyone, we also left the place before sunset with many unanswered queries. It left me pondering though how can ghosts stay in a place with so many temples surrounding it.

And the mystery remains…whether the place is haunted or not… If you figure it out…please let me know… waise bhoot woot kuch nahin hota  🙂

I visited Bhangarh recently and I did experience some restless energy there.

Yeah, Anuradha! I too felt restless vibes maybe because the place has been uninhabited for decades now.

I heard Ghosts resides there

Wow, that place looks incredibly beautiful! I would love to take my kid to explore that castle.

I definitely have a thing for forts … I will add it to my list of places to visit – next time I am in India 🙂

❥ tanvii.com

Sure! Let me know if you need any more info on this! I’ll be glad to help 🙂

I really love the picture of the flock of pigeons. It’s very nice. I’ve never visited Bhangarh before but i would love to visit one day. I can imagine kids would love it here.

Thanks, Keisha! You’d love it for sure If you’ve a thing for historical and desolate places 🙂

Bhangarh Fort is absolutely beautiful! You capture the atmosphere super well with your pictures!

Bhangarh certainly is one of the most beautiful and intriguing places I’ve visited! Thank you so much 🙂

This looks really cool and seems like you will learn a lot! Definitely great for kids for them to get out and explore new things

Wow, the area looks so desolate yet royal. Such an interesting place to see! I wouldn’t have thought of all the ghosty things, if you didn’t mention it. Great tips about food and lights!

Thank you so much for stopping by 🙂 It’s infamous for its ghostly status but to me the place seemed rather beautiful than spooky.

Ok honestly i had not heard about this fort but it looks super interesting. I am definitely visiting here soon to experience the restless vibes that everyone is talking about. Thank for this.

I didn’t know about this fort prior to reading your post. I’m glad you brought your kids to explore this place, but at a safe timing. Supernatural stuff is something I try not to mess with. I like how your post respects the place and share your feelings!

It looks like a great place to visit. I wouldn’t have thought of all the ghosty thing. Interesting place to visit.

Would you have been willing to go back and visit at night? Or did it really seem so creepy? I think your idea of going in the late morning is sort of perfect for not getting too spooked!

I think the priests view is really sensible. “There is no spirit more dangerous than man” sounds real to me.

This looked incredible. Do you think 11am was a good time? I’m not a fan of getting too hot ?

I have never heard of this place, as I haven’t traveled to India, but it looks like a great place to spend an afternoon exploring!

Ive never heard about Bhangarh but now I just wanna google it and read some scary stories about this place! Seems like you had very interesting trip there! Very nice!

Have to admit ghost stories are very interesting. Thanks for introducing me to this fort. It looks beautiful! I have never seen a place like this. I prefer uncrowded places. Therefore, I guess the difficulties in getting there were worth the effort!

Bhangarh holds so much mystery. Even I have been wondering how can evil spirits reside in a place that is surrounded by temples. Hope to visit the place soon.

Love hearing about new places like this especially when It’s a bit off the beaten path ! Gorgeous photos of Bhangarh. You probably feel so isolated when visiting this ghost place…It is forbidden to enter borders of the haunted Bhangarh Fort before sunrise and after sunset, right ?

It looks amazing!! It is amazing how us people always want the answers to everything, but when we do feel something we brush it off as something irrelevant. Trust your instincts I say! 🙂

This fort sounds really interesting and worthy of exploration. No surprise you were eager to discover it for yourself. Given that you’ve been there, do you still have the feeling of ghosts and such? It’s definitively somewhere I’d like to see when I visit India.

Omg the article is amazing and the snapshots are spectacular. I visited this place a month and i felt a range of emotions ther. Keep up the Good work

Thank you so much for the kind words, Shama 🙂

The fort’s history goes back many centuries. Constructors built the Bhangarh Fort in the seventeenth century, and it stands as a historic example. Man Singh I, a Navratna in Akbar’s court, is believed to have constructed it for his son Madho Singh I. People believe that the 18th-century famine forced the people of Bhangarh to either relocate or perish! This is true despite the many urban stories and myths surrounding Bhangarh Fort!

Going back to the two sides of Bhangarh Fort, two stories have lasted the test of time, both trying to explain the eerie atmosphere that surrounds the haunted fort. Let’s study up on the ghost of the Bhangarh Fort:

Bhangarh Fort Haunted Story 2: A Place Lost in the Shadows

According to the first version, an ascetic named Bala Nath who lived in the area permitted King Madho Singh to build the Bhangarh fort, provided he agreed to a condition that the ascetic’s abode would never be shadowed by the fort. However, as fate would have it, one of Madho Singh’s ambitious heirs increased the defenses vertically, casting a sinister shadow over the ascetic’s residence. Indeed, as soon as it did, the fort faced an imminent end. When the supposed prophecy came to pass, hauntings began to occur at the Bhangarh Fort.

Bhangarh Fort Haunted Story 2: A Place in a State of Transition

A second, more popular tale concerning the haunting of Bhangarh Fort says that Princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh is to blame for the fort’s catastrophic state. The princess was supposed to be very beautiful, and a dark magician from the neighborhood fell in love with her and tried to woo her with a cosmetic that she was supposed to use. Aware of the dark magician’s plot, the princess used the magical cosmetic to cover a big stone rock, which is believed to have crushed the ‘Tantrik’ to death. Before he died, the magician cursed the whole place, declaring that no soul could ever live there in peace. Ever since there has been a ghostly presence all around the Bhangarh Fort. Bhangarh Fort at Night

The authorities do not permit people to enter the fort before sunrise or after sundown. When the last ray of sunshine disappears until it returns the next morning, the entire landscape is enveloped in a cloud of blackness and a cold hollowness. The fort is the subject of numerous local legends concerning paranormal activity. Whether or not someone would believe it is up to them. It is reported that odd noises and ghostly presences can be experienced at night in Bhangarh Fort. In addition, as previously mentioned, one would be unable to escape the fort in the morning if they entered it at night.

There’s a very dense sense in the air, and you always feel like everyone is watching you do everything. The Archaeological Survey of India has put up a notice alerting visitors not to enter the fort’s grounds after dark.

Bhangarh’s haunted fort is the subject of multiple legends. Believing one of these tales is equivalent to believing that people have passed down the belief that the fort is haunted over the years. Those who believe that those who tried their luck can demonstrate their claim that either they disappeared or couldn’t come up with a reasonable explanation. The facts remain the same, regardless of your belief that the events were all the result of ruminating brains.

A visit to the Bhangarh Fort: An eerie marvel

The ‘Bhangarh Fort,’ isn’t for the faint-hearted and is regarded as one of the most haunted forts in India. The fort in itself is located in the regions that border the ‘Sariska Tiger Reserve,’ ranging all the way to the Alwar district in Rajasthan. Tourists visiting the state for the first time, most often make their way to this fort – wholly based on the assumptions and presumptions made about this place. It is of a common belief that the fort is one of the most haunted regions in the whole of India and must be explored only if you’re interested in the unknown.

Locals believe that tourists wanting to pay a visit to this attraction are basically welcoming death with their arms wide open! So if you’re wanting a crazy adventure and have no fear to face whatever the Bhangarh Fort may throw at you, then a visit to this fort could be on your to-do list. Tourists who are in the vicinity of the fort, are at first greeted with a hoarding from the Archaeological Survey of India. This is a wooden boarding giving you all the basic information you may need to know about this haunted fort. It is recommended that travellers do their research well in advance before making their way into the pathways of this mysterious fort.

If you’ve travelled by vehicle up until the fort, please be informed that the permission for vehicles to proceed ahead stops well ahead of the wooden hoarding. If tourists do not comply with the rules and regulations set by the park officials, major legal consequences can be upon your head. So be sure to strictly adhere to the guidelines set before heading towards the park. Once you’ve parked your transport vehicle outside, tourists walk down a short pathway that leads you to the wooden hoarding and then eventually the actual entrance to the park.

We’ve compiled everything you need to know about the Bhangarh Fort in this blog so that you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

The Haunting History

Built by the great King, ‘Madho Singh,’ who happened to be the younger brother of general ‘Emperor Akbar,’ commonly referred to as ‘Man Singh.’ The Bhangarh Fort was constructed after due approval was sought from ‘Guru Balu Nath,’ who used the fort as his place of meditation. The common folk of the region believe that ‘Guru Balu Nath,’ had made King ‘Madho Singh,’ take an oath that the shadows of the fort would not come anywhere near his area of meditation.

Unfortunately, the King did not keep his word/promise. As soon as the shadows of the Bhangarh Fort came close and eventually touched Guru Balu Nath’s spot of mediation, he is said to have cursed the entire village to be roofless for years to come. The curse of Guru Balu Nath is said to exist even today, as any roof constructed in the village collapses every single time.

Yet another story that may unravel the mystery of the fort, is the love story of Princess Ratnavati and Tantrik Singhia. It is believed that Tantrik Singhia had tried multiple times to use magic as an element to winning the heart of  Princess Ratnavati. The princess, on the other hand, was well aware of his evil plans for her and in a rage ordered for the death of Tantrik Singhia.

After having been informed of this gesture by the princess, Tantrik Singhia is said to have cursed all the residents and dwellers of the fort to remain roofless for time immemorial. The village continues to remain roofless even to this day.

What happens in the Bhangarh Fort at night?

All tourists and visitors are forbidden from entering or exploring the Bhangarh Fort or its vicinity anytime after sunset. These instructions have been strictly given by the Archaeological Survey of India. Any traveller who forgoes these instructions are bound to be subject to severe legal consequences and the locals are a testament to the fact that these aren’t just rumours.

Locals have recalled a number of various stories over time as they have to hear the Bhangarh ghosts scream, sounds of bangles, women wailing out loud, and an eerie / rather creepy smell that comes out of the park post dusk!

The authorities have also been told about unusual music sounds, ghostly shadows, and crazy dances that have been heard and seen within the Bhangarh Fort. Yet another mystery and frightening fact about the fort, remains the lingering question of all the Bravehearts that have stayed within the forts post dusk. None of them have returned or been seen appear alive the next morning or for years to come.

Bhangarh Fort Timings

Tourists looking to visit the Bhangarh Fort and explore the haunted pathways that follow must consider the best times to visit the fort before they plan their visit. We would recommend the months between September to February to be the best time to explore the fort. The extreme heave wave that plagues the region of Rajasthan is one of the major reasons for the preference of these months.

The Bhangarh Fort is open for tourists between the hours of 06:00 am to 06:00 pm, respectively. It is strictly forbidden for visitors to roam through the fort or be present anywhere near the vicinity of the fort after this time frame. These are strict rules that have been put forward by the Archaeological Survey of India and need to be followed to the tee.

Bhangarh Fort Entry Fees

Tourists need to keep in mind that the entry into the Bhangarh Fort isn’t free of cost and is chargeable. The cost of entry varies in accordance with the nationality of the tourists. If you’re a Non-Resident Indian, your entry to the fort is free of cost. For those looking to take photographs of this haunted region, an additional charge is mandatory.

Here’s another Bhangarh story that about a different and a more frightening tale behind the doom of Bhangarh. But, before his dirty ploy could work, Princess Ratnavati got a whiff of his trickery and threw off the magic-laden oil onto a huge boulder in the vicinity. This was when the doomsday clock of Bhangarh Fort and the whole town was set in a countdown. The black magic worked its way and caused the boulder to crush the tantric to his death. It was built as the residence for his second son, Madho Singh, who was the younger brother of Man Singh, a general under Mughal Emperor Akbar. This place is famous for its spooky reputation and is believed to be one of the most haunted places in the country.

Bhangarh Fort is known for its paranormal activities. An unusual thing about it is that the buildings here don’t have roofs. It is believed that a sage cursed this place, causing its eerie atmosphere. It is believed that if you place your ears close to the palace walls, you would hear some voices.

The Fort is surrounded by greenery and beautiful landscapes, and used to be a lively town. It is now surrounded by a ruined wall with four gates i.e. Lahori Gate, Delhi Gate, Ajmeri Gate and Phulbari. Inside the fort, You’ll see Dancer’s Haveli, Jauhari Bazar, natural springs, waterfalls, gardens, havelis, banyan trees and temples of Lord Someshwar, Gopinath, Mangala Devi and Keshava Rai. There is a hidden Chhatri on top of the hill providing a view of the town and fort of Bhangarh.

Bhangarh Fort attracts visitors not only for its historical significance but primarily to catch a glimpse of paranormal activity. It also attracts tourists, historians and thrill seekers alike for exploring its ancient corridors. Many visitors have encountered ghostly and unnatural experiences within the fort’s compound. Therefore, ASI, or Archeological Survey of India doesn’t allow visitors from visiting the fort at night.

Today, Bhangarh Fort stands as a reminder of Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring power of folklore and legend. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a believer in the supernatural, or simply a curious traveller, a visit to Bhangarh Fort promises an unforgettable experience filled with history, mystery and the whispers of centuries past.

History Of Bhangarh Fort

The history of Bhangarh Fort is deeply connected to Rajasthan’s colorful history filled with stories of bravery, excitement and mystery. While the exact origins of the fort are not very clear, historical records indicate that it was built in the 16th century during the rule of Bhagwant Das for the residence of his second son Madho Singh.

Bhangarh Fort, situated among the scenic foothills of the Aravalli Range, was strategically located along ancient trade routes that connected Rajasthan with other regions of India. During its prime time, Bhangarh Fort flourished as a bustling town with markets, palaces, temples and residential quarters dotting its landscape. The town bustled with activity attracting traders, artisans and travellers from far and wide. However, its glory days were not destined to last.

Today, Bhangarh Fort stands as a haunting reminder of Rajasthan’s disruptive past and the enduring power of myth and legend. While the town lies in ruins, its crumbling walls and weathered structures continue to attract visitors from around the world, drawn by the allure of its eerie atmosphere and the echoes of centuries-old tales whispered among its silent corridors.

Haunted Story Of Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort is notorious for its chilling ghost stories, woven with curses, forbidden love and vengeful spirits. Here are two popular tales:

  • The Cursed Shadow: Legend says a holy man blessed the fort’s construction but warned that its shadow must never touch his abode. King Madho Singh, however, disregarded the warning, adding floors that cast a shadow on the holy man’s land. In anger, the Guru cursed the fort, dooming it to destruction and trapping its inhabitants within its cursed walls. Some visitors have claimed that they hear disembodied screams, feel unseen touch and witness unexplained shadows, attributing them to the restless spirits trapped by the curse.
  • The Love Triangle Tragedy: Some legend says that Princess Ratnavati, known for her beauty, attracted the unwanted attention of a sorcerer named Singhia. He used dark magic to enchant a cosmetic for her, hoping to win her affection. The princess, realising his move, tricked him into using the enchanted cosmetic on herself, causing his death. As he lay dying, Singhania cursed the entire fort, condemning its residents to suffer the same fate he faced. Visitors report whispers of the princess, sightings of shadowy figures and an overall feeling of unease.

Architecture Of Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort is situated between Jaipur and Alwar, nestled in the Aravalli Range in Rajasthan. It boasts a captivating blend of military architecture and aesthetic grandeur. The fort’s defensive structures include high walls with strategically placed bastions and fortified gates like Lahori Gate, Ajmeri Gate, Phulbari Gate and Delhi Gate, showcasing its military significance. The fort’s palaces and residences are designed with intricate carvings, decorative columns and elements like Jharokhas and Chhatris, showing the fusion of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles.

The fort was once a seven-storied building and is now standing at just three, hinting at its former richness, The temples inside the fort is one of the well-preserved structures, built in the Nagara style with intricate carvings and towering shikharas. The Gopinath Temple is perched on a raised platform, boasting exquisite sculptures and ornate ceilings. The Someshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and houses a sacred shivling within its sanctum. These temples, despite being the witness to the fort’s downfall, remain resilient testament to its past glory. The fort also houses step wells, reservoirs and watchtowers, highlighting advanced water conservation systems and defence mechanisms.

Despite its weathered condition, the remains of Dancer’s Haveli, Jauhari Bazar and the Chhatri on an elevated hill provide glimpses into the fort’s grandeur. The remains of the existing palaces can also be found inside the fort indicating the fort’s prosperity during its glorious days. Clearly, the fort’s popularity doesn’t need to rest on its haunted stories as it is also an architectural marvel in itself. The legacy of Bhangarh Fort architecture stands as a testament to Rajasthan’s historical richness and the skilled craftsmanship of its builders.

History of Bhangarh Fort

As the name suggests, Bhangarh fort is situated in Bhangarh village in Rajasthan’s Alwar district. A quick check on the Bhangarh Travel Guide will give you the technical details about its latitude and longitude, weather, temperature, and the hotspots of the area. What it will fail to highlight is the presence of the Aravali hills that act as a guard to the Bhangarh fort. A lesser-known fact is that Bhangarh itself is a prehistoric site with several  temples in Rajasthan  Havelis that are the crowns of Rajasthan royalty.

Being a prehistoric site, the town of Bhangarh is an archeological site and is under the protection of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and has a board placed at the borders of Bhangarh, stating that staying in the borders of the town before sunrise and after sunset is strictly prohibited.

The Beauty Known as Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort

A historical site in itself, the Bhangarh fort was built in the 17th century by Man Singh I who was a general in Akbar’s troops. The once flourishing town and fort suddenly became desolate and that left many people wondering, giving way to Bhangarh fort ghost story and legends we read about these days. However, before we proceed to the stories, here are a few things to know about Bhangarh Fort if you are actually planning a visit there. Firstly, the best time to visit the ruins is during winter when you can enjoy the trek uphill without gasping much. Secondly, do not go to the fort seeking just a brush with the paranormal, for Bhangarh and the fort is also beautiful and should be aesthetically viewed as well.

The trip to Bhangarh fort is beautiful too, with the greenery around and the Aravali hills looming upfront. Another interesting thing is the fort is in close proximity to Sariska National Park which is a popular tiger reserve of India. Structurally, the fort is said to be inspired by the medieval Shahjahanabad city with massive wooden gates at the four sides and the sides of the precinct carved with ornate small temples and waterfalls to aid airflow, thereby keeping the space cool.

What catches attention is the fact that, unlike a typical Rajput fort, the Bhangarh Fort is not built atop a hill, rather, the three green hills act as a barrier behind the fort. Once you enter the fort premises, you will be greeted by a vast expanse of ruins that lead up to a really old banyan tree – said to be over 300 years old. The fort itself has suffered less damage and once you are over the magnificence of the old tree, you will be greeted by the sheer beauty of the fort.

It is highly recommended that you climb the fort and reach the top because that is the experience you will cherish forever. With the three mountains acting as the backdrop, you can see the entire city spread out before your eyes. This feeling is something else and cannot be explained – only felt. Once you are amazed by this view, take a trip to the largest temple of the fort, the Gopinath temple. Though the place is void of any idols, the architecture is a prime example of the exuberance and brilliance of the era gone by.

The Ghost Stories – Legend of the Fort

Bhangarh Fort

India is a land of mysticism and paranormal stories. At every turn, you come face to face with something ancient and mysterious. Bhangarh with its royalty, setting in Rajasthan and a prehistoric presence is no exception to this. While you can hear all about the roaming spirits of the restless or impure souls from the locals or from tourists who claim to have felt a presence, all these stories have their roots at two of the legends that surround the fort and its ruins.

The first legend is that within the fort walls lived a sadhu named Guru Balu Nath and his permission to build the fort was sought first by Man Singh I and that while the sadhu did give the king permission, he also laid a condition that under no circumstance should the fort create a shadow over his house and if that happens then the city will perish. The king swore on this but his descendants failed to keep the oath and as a result of the broken oath, the curse befell Bhangarh.

The second and more popular legend is that Princess Ratnavati who was a very beautiful woman caught the attention of Tantrik Singhia, a well-versed magician, who practiced dark arts. He tried to win her over but she kept refusing him. He then resorted to using magic on her by hiding a love potion in her perfume. But, the princess came to know of this and she poured the entire bottle over a huge boulder which crushed the tantric. Before breathing his last, the tantric placed a curse on the town which led to its destruction.

A Walk Down Spine Chilling Nostalgia

Rajasthan is one of the few  places in India  where the rich and royal heritage of India can be witnessed in all its grandeur. Bhangarh fort history has many stories to tell, both significant and mystic. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you must take a trip to Bhangarh for its sheer beauty and expanse and soak in the culture and tradition of the bygone days. And if you let your imagination run a bit wild, then you might be able to hear fleeting melodies of court music playing even! Come on! The intention here is not to scare you!

Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh_Fort_-_Royal_Palace_Bhangarh_(July_2022)_-_img_16

Famous for the historical ruins and the ghost stories, Bhangarh has been regarded as the most haunted place in the country. It is located on the way between Jaipur and Delhi. The Bhangarh Fort is a 17th Century fort in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. It was built by Bhagwant Das for his son Madho Singh I. It was named by Madho Singh after his grandfather Man Singh or Bhan Singh.

As soon as you enter through the main gate of the ruined fort city, also known as Bhoot Bangla, it gives a chill down your spine. Within the fort, there are temples, palaces, and Havelis. Apart from that, there are also four more gates for the entry to the fort: the Lahori Gate, the Ajmeri Gate, the Phulbari Gate and the Delhi Gate. There are many Hindu temples at the entrance of the gates. The royal palace is located at the extreme end of the limits of the fort.

Bhangarh Fort: Story behind ‘India’s Most Haunted Place’

I am sure few of you must have heard about the Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan , especially after Nat Geo and Discovery covered the place and the stories behind it. Out of the many stories that we have heard in India, from Delhi Cant. to Dumas Beach in Gujarat and numerous more in India, Bhangarh is the most HAUNTED place that would give you a real jolt. I decided to visit this place from Jaipur and it was a short drive from the capital city.

Bhangarh Fort is situated on the outskirt of Sariska Tiger in the surrounded by the Aravali range in the abandoned town of Bhangarh, Rajasthan. It’s a demolished town which between Jaipur and Alwar on Jaipur Delhi Highway. It’s a major tourist attraction in northern India and is said to be a standout amongst the most haunted places in India and in the world. Numerous myths are connected with this fort.

Bhangarh Town

About the town of Bhangarh, it was set up in 1573 by King Bhagwant Das who had two children. His elder child was Man Singh, the well-known General of Mughal Emperor Akbar and the younger one was Madho Singh. Bhagwant Das made Bhangarh for Madho Singh who lived and ruled Bhangarh his entire life. Madho Singh named the city after his grandfather Man Singh who was otherwise called Bhan Singh and now the city is recognised as " Bhangarh". Bhangarh Fort might be famed for its haunted and mysterious presence but it can be visited as a place that is beautiful and pleasant. People say, Bhangarh fort is not for the easily frightened (faint-hearted) people. It is rated as the most haunted place in the whole of India. India also has some other world's most haunted places.

Most famous story behind the place

There is a belief about Bhangarh that the place is spooky and nobody can set out to go there after sunset. A few ghost stories are behind the mysteries of the Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan. Out of the various stories about Bhangarh post one that is most predominant is that the Bhangarh city was work by King Madho Singh. For this city, the Emperor got endorsement by self-denying Guru Balu Nath who pondered at this place. The endorsement was given on the condition that the shadow of ruler's royal residence could never touch him at his place. If the shadow touched over his place, the city would transform into remnants. The king began his fort construction with his cash and quality. The Bhangarh fortification was built with a few stories lastly shadowed the restricted withdraw of Guru Balu Nath.

According to psychic energy of Saint, the whole town was demolished and as far back as any development around the pounded area or royal residence confronts crumple. The samadhi of Guru Balu Nath is still there where he was covered.

Bhangarh at night:

No one is allowed to go inside the Bhangarh fort premises once the sun sets and tight restrictions have been imposed at Bhangarh fort. Visitors have to leave the fort before 6 pm, and fort's main entrance is locked and Goverment has placed a notice board at the main gate which reads that " visiting the fort before sunrise and after sunset is strictly prohibited and if rules are violated legal action would be taken".

There are strong rumours that spirits roam in Bhangarh Fort at night. People often hear screaming, crying voice of women, bangles sound in the rooms and they have earlier reported many weird and scarcely credible incidents like some one's talking and a special smell is felt. Such kind of weird incidents are reported in the fort after dusk. There are also stories of people seeing ghostly shadows, strange lights, unusual sound of music and dance coming from the fort. It is also said that whoever enters the fort after sunset and attempts to stay there for a night, will not return from the fort next morning.

One of the visitors' experience as found on internet (You can read more)

Story told by Masoom Bhargav: I am from Alwar and Bhangarh is in the municipality of Alwar district. Since childhood I have heard various stories about Bhangarh but I would like to quote one. This story was told by my father. We went there when I was 9 years old so I don't remember much but according to my father when our family was walking near the fort of Bhangarh we saw a man who was talking to himself. Being a child I wanted to ask him who he was talking to but my father resisted. While coming back we saw that man again. He was walking by my side. He was telling us the real story behind Bhangarh.

My father tried to get rid of him but he was desperate to tell us the story. He was old therefore he was walking slowly. My father carried me and tried to walk fast to get rid of him. (You must be thinking how cruel we were because we didn't try to help that old person but I would like to mention that we gave him food on the first meeting but later on some local people warned us.) My father's plan worked and we were far ahead of him but the strangest thing that happened was when we looked back to see whether he was following us or not he disappeared... You must be thinking I am joking but the people behind us told us there was nobody following us.

No old man behind us! My father was confused!

The Story of Bhangarh Fort, India’s Most Notorious Haunted Site

Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan

With a sign put up by the Archaeological Survey of India prohibiting visitors post-sundown, the 17th-century Bhangarh Fort stands tall, unbeaten and grim in Rajasthan ’s Alwar district. While it was once a grand architectural marvel—built by local ruler Raja Bhagwant Das—today, the sprawling fort and its immediate premises are known as the most haunted site in India.

Decently preserved, for the most part, Bhangarh’s ruins today include several impressive structures, including several temples, public chambers, and the royal palace. While its primary gate is mostly dilapidated, the complex’s other points of entry are mostly intact. Upon entrance, visitors will stumble into a variety of temples, including a Hanuman temple, a Ganesh temple, and a Someshwar temple. These structures, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures, are proof that Bhangarh is worth visiting for not just the spooks.

Bhangarh Fort

Farther inside the fort complex, you will find marketplaces and stunning havelis or mansions. A Na chni ki Haveli (dancer’s chambers) and other structures can be seen towards the main entrance areas. The royal palace sits farther inward and is a larger, spookier structure.

The general belief is that Raja Bhagwant Das built the fort for his younger son, Madho Singh, who is said to have coined the fort’s name, taken from either his father’s or grandfather’s name. Perhaps the family’s most known member around the country today is Man Singh I, who was a trusted general and one of nine advisors (called Navratnas) to Mughal emperor Akbar.

Bhangarh Fort

A variety of legends surround the circumstances under which the sprawling fort complex was abandoned. According to one version, a local ascetic, who insisted that no house in the vicinity should cast a shadow on his home, cursed the fort after the grand structure and its shadow overpowered his property.

Inside the fort

Another local legend tells of a black magician or evil saint who fell in love with a princess from the fort town and attempted to use a love potion to win her affection. However, the princess dodged his moves by flinging the potion onto a boulder, which then rolled down toward the magician, physically crushing him. Before taking his final breath, he cursed the fort, saying it would end up in a state in which no one could live—as it is today.

Bhangarh Fort

Speaking to locals from nearby villages will get you a host of newer, stranger myths and legends. But what is widely accepted as true is that a few fatal accidents have taken place in the fort in the past, mostly involving tourists, which prompted the Archaeological Survey of India to post its sign prohibiting visitors between sunset and sunrise. However, spending full nights in the haunted fort premises is still an adventure people partake in almost too frequently.

My Simple Sojourn

Bhangarh Fort’s ghost stories and my experience

Sharing is caring!

Bhangarh fort overview

It was the start of winter, which is the right time to visit Rajasthan. I planned a trip to Bhangarh fort from Delhi over a weekend. When I planned a trip to Bhangarh, we also included Sariska and other surrounding areas that are on the way. Our main focus was to visit the haunted fort of Bhangarh.

Road on the way to Bhangarh fort

We drove from Delhi to Gurgaon and took NH 8. Before Alwar, we entered an inner route and drove through the outskirts of Alwar. On the way, we stopped at Siliserh Lake for boating and snacks.

Dirt road on the way to Bhangarh fort

Bhangarh fort’s story

Bhangarh fort in Ajabgarh is considered India’s most haunted places. I don’t know when this fort got this tag but this is what Google informs when you search.

Bhangarh fort was built in 1631 during the rule of Raja Bhagwant Das. He built this fort as the residence for his second son Madho Singh. The fort was in use for several decades by different rulers.

Bhangarh fort ruins

The most popular story is of tantric and princess.

According to the story, the princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh was very beautiful and there was no one like her in all of Rajasthan. When the princess turned eighteen, she started getting matrimonial proposals from other states.

In the same region lived a Tantrik magician named Singhia, who was well versed in the occult. He was desperately in love with the princess despite knowing that he would never be allowed to even see her, let alone meet her.

One day, he saw the princess’s maid in the market buying scented oil for her. Seeing this, he got an idea by which he could meet the princess. He used his black magic and put a spell on the oil which would hypnotize the princess by her merely touching the oil, and she would surrender herself to him.

The princess foiled this plan though. She had seen the Tantrik enchanting the oil, and she, therefore, threw it away. The bottle of oil was broken over a boulder. As soon as the oil touched the stone, it started rolling towards the wicked Tantrik and crushed him.

Bhangarh fort ruins and path

Story of ascetic Bala Nath.

Another legend claims that an ascetic named Bala Nath lived in the Bhangarh. When King Madho Singh planned to build the Bhangarh fort he obtaining permission from the ascetic Bala Nath. Ascetic permitted him after the king agreed to a condition that said that the shadow of the fort must never fall upon the home of the ascetic.

Everything was fine with Bhangarh fort till the time one of the ambitious successors of Madho Singh added vertically to fortify against enemy attacks. Due to this causing fort’s ominous shadow, which engulfed the abode of the ascetic. After the promise broke the fort was doomed within no time. The locals believe that the prophecy stood fulfilled, and the Bhangarh Fort became haunted.

Though some people don’t believe in these stories and consider these myths. It is believed that during the famine of 1783 in Ajabgarh, the town was abandoned and never occupied after that. It remained abandoned and turned into ruins gradually. Since the fort is surrounded by forest so wild animals freely moved inside.

It is also believed that the fort was abandoned due to the plague or famine.

The fort is under the archeological survey of India and remains open between 6.00 AM to 6.00 PM. All the monuments under control of ASI remain open from sunrise to sunset and the Bhangarh fort is not an exception.

How to travel to Bhangarh fort from Delhi

The haunted Bhangarh fort is situated in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by forest. There is no big town or railway station near the fort.

The nearest railway station is in Dausa, which is 30 km from Bhangarh. Dausa is 280 Km from Delhi . There are direct trains between Dausa and Delhi. Rajasthan roadways also run buses from Delhi to Dausa.

Entry gate of village on the way to Bhangarh

Jaipur to Bhangarh Fort

The nearest airport is in Jaipur which is 90 km from Bhangarh. There are no direct trains or buses for Bhangarh from Jaipur . You have to first arrive in Dausa and then travel to Bhangarh.

From Jaipur, it is easy to do a day trip to Bhangarh Fort by cab. Which is convenient and safe.

Best way to travel to Bhangarh Fort

I don’t recommend traveling by public transport especially if you are a female traveler. Rajasthan is safe for travelers but the public transport facilities are not good around Bhangarh. In case if you don’t get a bus or Jeep then you will be stuck in the middle of nowhere.

If traveling from Delhi to Bhangarh fort then you can stay in Sariska, which is 30 km from Bhangarh. There are several hotel options in & around Sariska. You can also visit the Sariska Tiger Reserve if staying there.

My Bhangarh Fort experience

We traveled from Sariska to Bhangarh and arrived before noon. It was Saturday and there were some locals as well as tourists in the fort premise. There were few people even though it was the weekend.

There were lots of monkeys and langurs in the area. Some of the monkeys were jumping outside the main gate and climbing on the trees. The monkeys of Bhangarh are fearless and not bothered by people. Their actions made us a bit nervous in the beginning.

We entered the fort and we met with a local guy. He told us these monkeys don’t attack people but if they notice eatables in your hand then they may snatch it. Otherwise no issues. He told us a few more interesting things which I will share below in my Bhangarh fort experience.

Group of Langurs in Bhangarh fort

The Bhangarh fort is surrounded by high walls and there are well-maintained gardens in the premise.

Bhangarh fort temple at gate

At top of the fort, we again met with the same local guy. He informed us that he came to pay respect to “Jin Pret’s” temple. This temple is in a small room that is badly illuminated. He lighted a couple of cigarettes and kept them on the floor as an offering to “Jin Pret”.

Broken stones at Bhangarh fort top

We spent some time at the top exploring the fort and came down. I didn’t have any arrange feeling or experience in Bhangarh fort even though it was constantly playing in my mind that it is a haunted place.

Some people who visited Bhangarh affirmed that there is a strange feeling in the atmosphere, which causes symptoms of anxiety and restlessness but we had no such experience. The ruins are beautiful and tranquil as there is no mad tourist rush. The place itself is beautiful and the surroundings are perfect.

Trees in Bhangarh fort

Bhangarh fort ghost stories

We climbed down and sitting near the Shomeshwar temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are statues of Ganesh, Hanuman and local goddess in the temple. We again met that local man and he smiled as he noticed us. He told us that we are in the safest place in the fort.

He told us that once he came with his friends and it was late afternoon. It started getting dark early so they were coming down fast. As they were almost near the bottom of fort ramp one of his friends started screaming and making weird sounds. Before they could shake him for his strange behavior he started running madly. The moment he reached near the temple wall he collapsed. They splashed some water on his face and he regained his senses.

After gaining conscious his friend told him that he felt someone got on his back and tried to twist his neck. More than that his friend can’t remember. Since then he always visited the temple before 3.00 pm because according to him the ghost of Bhangarh fort gets active as sunset approaches.

He said once a small boy approached him and he was selling loose flowers. But as he never offers flowers so he didn’t buy any from the boy. Later on, when he reached home he found some flowers in his tote bag.

Entry gate Bhangarh fort

We came out of the main gate and my friend was curious after all the ghost stories of Bhangarh Fort. So, she asked the half-asleep guard at the gate if there are ghosts in Bhangarh Fort. The middle-aged guard came out from his slumber and told us that yes there are ghosts in Bhangarh fort. He said he rarely goes inside the fort and leaves before night.

He told us that a couple of villagers met with the ghost inside the fort but as they pray to them so they don’t harm them. We asked how can villagers know that they were ghosts. He said “they” talk to people and walk behind them but suddenly disappear. If someone is human how can he disappear? Logic !!!!!

I at Bhangarh fort top

I can say there is an eerie feeling in Bhangarh Fort, which is due to these practical reasons.

* There is no village near the fort and since there is no population so everything is empty. The abandoned building never give good vibes.

** Even on Saturday, there were few people in the fort, you can easily imagine how it is during weekdays.

* Fort was empty so even if a small bird or insect will fly in a room, there will be some noise.

** When you go to the top of the fort it is open from all sides with some broken walls. If you are a couple of people with no one else on the site. It feels odd.

* Bhangarh fort touches the Sariska national park so at night animals venture out in & around the fort.

Bhangarh fort ruins

Before we know it was already late for lunch. We had finished our snacks and feeling hungry. So, we went to a village shop to have some tea or snacks. After knowing that we are coming from Bhangarh Fort tea stall guy said that we returned on a safe time.

While we were having tea he told us that some of the people from his village believe that the abandoned Bhangarh Fort comes alive after sunset, but with spirits. The ghosts of people living in those areas haunt the ruins and their favorite is the palace in the fort. These kinds of activities are at their peak on full moon nights or when solar or moon eclipse. At that time ghosts from other areas also congregate here for some sort of activities. Ghost conference !!!!!

Practical tips for visiting Bhangarh Fort

** Don’t travel on public transport because it is not practical. If you want to cut the cost then travel to Dausa and hire a round trip taxi from there. Taking a day trip from Jaipur is also a good option. Otherwise, combine it with Sariska and take a day trip from there.

* There are no petrol pumps so fill the tank for the return journey.

** There are no restaurants or cafes so carry enough food/snacks and water for the trip. Keep in mind it will be warm even in December and January.

* Do not stay in Bhangarh after sunset, my advice has nothing to do with the ghost’s stories. The main reason is that Bhangarh is at the edge of Sariska national park so after dark wild animals roam freely and it can be dangerous. Another reason is that if there are any problems in your vehicle then it’s not easy to get help.

** Wear comfortable shoes because you have to walk on a stoned paved path to climb the Fort.

* Remain attentive because there are fewer tourists in Bhangarh fort even on weekends. Be careful of monkeys and langurs.

** Don’t explore the fort alone because some parts are secluded and there is no point in taking unnecessary risk in unknown areas.

Oooooh, I love a good ghost story, and this place has a couple …and monkeys to boot! I’d never heard of Bhangarh, but I’d like to visit here after seeing your visual story! Beautiful image of the woman dressed in red walking past the neutral stones of the Fort. The Someshwar temple took my breath away, as did the aerial view!

Thanks so much 🙂 It’s one of its kind of place.

Gosh what a supremely eerie place! I’m not one to get spooked but the isolation of the fort and the lack of people would give me some goosebumps. Fascinating read!

Absolutely!!! It’s isolated and there is no village in close proximity.
