The tour was an amazing experience in terms of personal service, compatibility of our group, my equipment, and areas explored. Our guides, Tin and Devour, did their best to accommodate our requests in this very busy summer season. Our accommodations were lacking about 30% of the time however, due to no fault of the guides. We had to haul our luggage UP and I mean UP cobblestoned streets for what seemed like forever to get to a less than suitable room, and this after a LONG day of cycling. Really put a damper on the tour, that is for sure. My bike was great, but others had difficulties and they were gracious about riding with bad equipment - I would not have been so tolerant, nor do I think they should have been. Devour was an amazing support through out.

Bike Dalmatian Islands – Mountain Bike Trans Croatia South
Aside from the fact that Croatia is absolutely spectacular, and idyllic in every way for a Viking trip, I felt that the way the bike trip was organized, was very confusing, lacking enough, detail, and handholding for a novice. The problem always was our luggage how to get from one point to another and worry about what happens to our luggage, contrary, to my understanding, we are selves had to take the luggage on the ferry with us, which was extremely difficult to push your bike up and into a ferry with your luggage. Many other cases are even when we got off the ferry and our luggage had to go to a hotel. There was confusion and or there wasn’t something arrange for the luggage to take it to the hotel, so what we thought would be taken care of in terms of the hassle of having a luggage on a bike trip was an essence still a hassle and deterred from the freedom that we were looking for on a bike trip . Our local man on the ground Daniel Piccini was fantastic. Quality bikes were amazing. He was very efficient and helpful and solve a lot of our problems that Anessa should’ve been solved by the company organizer, which is tour radar. It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t use to a radar again I just simply means I would ask a lot more questions and want a lot more detail before undertaking such a trip.

The Dalmatian Coast Classic-Croatia guided Bike Tour
"This was the best vacation my family has ever had, hands down. We had never taken a tour before, and certainly not a bike tour, and were a bit nervous going in that it would be too restrictive, or that we wouldn't like the structure. None of that happened. Our 23 and 24 year old kids had a fantastic time, enjoying our fellow riders, the food, the cycling, the scenery, the hotels, and the many, many laughs we all had. I cannot say enough about the Meridien10 guides, Mijo and Toni. Because of their attention to literally every detail, we were able to relax and thoroughly enjoy the vacation. Meals are pre-ordered and served family style, no decisions necessary. Don't like one dish? Don't worry, there are 4-5 more coming (an ongoing topic of conversation among the group: let's see if we can finish THIS meal!) The well-selected restaurants and hotels did not disappoint. The bikes were terrific, and if you felt you couldn't do a climb, no problem, they pop your bike on top of the always-present van, and you skip that one. No drama, no issues. Want to skip the climb and enjoy one of the breath-takingly beautiful and exciting descents? Done! However, Mijo was extremely good at sizing up the capabilities of the group, and knew when to push and when to suggest a break, and he was always right. I cannot say enough about this trip and this great locally-owned company. Top notch.

The leaders on this trip were amazing. They have a lot of knowledge about their country and could answer any question that we had. They were organized, safety conscious and always had fun back up plans, if needed. The meals, snacks, and scenery were spectacular. The rides were challenging, but not enough to drain your energy, so you could enjoy a busy afternoon exploring the towns.

Capturing the Beauty of our Tours
User Reviews
I just returned from the National Parks/Dalmatia tour in late August 2019 and it exceeded my expectations in pretty much everything!!! The views were just amazing, this is a beautiful country and they do a great job putting us on routes to safely see that beauty. If you have the extra time, do the National Park tour extension, the parks and riding are incredible! I went as a solo rider and met wonderful people from Australia & the US. The food was some of the best I've ever had in my life. As a gluten-free, pescatartian (fish only) I was a little worried about the food but this was the perfect trip for a fish lover and they even had GF bread at many of the locations. Petra said they focus on making sure the restaurants have great food and wine options, and they sure did!!! The courses were pretty hills and we had some more recreational riders and some pretty avid riders and all were accommodated. They have new Trek bikes that performed great. A couple riders had e-bikes to give a little assistance up some hills, so keep that in mind if you do not ride a whole lot and want a little extra help to keep it at a pleasant pace. I did a trip through Tuscany with Backroads last year and loved it so I was a little worried about going on a tour with a different company, but I tell you what, I'd go with Cycling Croatia over Backroads in a heartbeat for any trip! The value for the money is much more reasonable and the hotels, food, cycling, support on the course, guides and cultural experiences cannot be beat with Cycling Croatia. Thank you to Petra, Kruno, Mario & Veki for an unforgettable trip!! Andi Comfort , Minneapolis, MN
What a fabulous trip! This company is absolutely first rate. Krunoslav and Petra, who not only own the company, but accompany you on the tour, are engaging, knowledgeable, and amazingly organized. The hotels, the food, and the routes which were chosen were all excellent. We both ride electric bikes at our home in San Diego, and they provided us with superb electric bikes. Better than the ones we own. The electric bikes allowed us to arrive at our destination after doing quite a few hills, with big smiles on our faces. I strongly recommend that you spend two extra days before the trip in Split, and two extra days at the end of the trip in the Dubrovnik. Both are Fascinating beautiful cities. Thank you Krunoslav and Petra for a remarkable week in lovely Croatia......probably the best organized bike trip we've ever done!! Cheers Paul and Nelly Paul Barry and Nelly Dean, San Diego, California
First of all, Croatia is an extraordinary place to visit and to bicycle. The scenery is amazing, the history deep and fascinating, and the food fresh, delicious, and healthy. The views from the ridges of the Dalmatian islands were exceptional. Kruno and Petra provided a wonderful mix of thoughtful bike routes, extra features, and fine dining. They were supportive of all levels of biking, including ambitious road-bikers and slower tourers. They provided van support whenever needed, and they and their team quickly attended to any needed bike adjustments. All bike equipment was in excellent condition. Once Petra knew that one of us was keenly interested in horticulture she was quick to provide as much information as possible. All meals were included, as were frequent wine tastings, a visit to an olive-oil museum, and an oyster tasting at a cultivated-oyster farm. Two of the meals were very special, in that they had connections to organic farming and gardening and were prepared by dedicated artisans in their homes. The hotels were all excellent and ranged from accommodations within the Diocletian Palace in Split to beach resorts to a luxurious facility overhanging Dubrovnik.Because of the personal attention, the inclusion of all the meals, and the choices of hotels and restaurants, this was not only a spectacular tour but also an extraordinary value. I would recommend Cycling Croatia with Kruno and Petra to anyone. Mark Schlawin, U.S.A.
We just returned home after the 10 day/9 night Dalmatia and National Parks tour, with an extra (independent) day in Zagreb and Dubrovnik that Kruno helped arrange. I won't bore you with all the details of our trip - just assure you that you can't go wrong signing up for this one. Croatia is stunning anyways - I quickly adopted #allbeautifulallthetime when posting photos. The tour itself was top notch also. We've never been on a premium Butterfield & Robinson tour, but extended family in our group had. They felt 80-90% of the Cycling Croatia tour was superior to the level of accommodations/meals/support on the B&R tour - at a fraction of the price. (And none of this CC tour was substandard.) Bottom line: great country, great value, great itinerary, great guides, great food, great wine. Highly recommended. Scott Ryser, U.S.A.
Dalmatia and National Parks Tour We took this tour with Kruno and his team in early October 2016. If you have time, we'd highly recommend the National parks addition to the Dalmatia Tour - they really have to be seen to be believed and the descent overlooking Pag Island was one of the highlights of our trip. As with all the other reviews, we were blown away by the scenery: rugged mountains; crystal clear waters that you could see through forever; Plitvice Lakes (extraordinary - no photo can really do it justice); the islands, with their variations; and of course the cities with the Dioletician Palace in Split and the walled city of Dubrovnik. From the pick up at the airport to final arrival in Dubrovnik, everything was taken care of. It was great to know we were in such safe hands. Kruno and his team (Mario and the others) were all terrific: nothing was too much trouble. The food was fabulous with lots of traditional fare at lunch and great evening meals in unusual locations, rather than the standard restaurant fare you might expect. As they say in Australia "do yourself a favor!" And book this trip! Gillian Harrex, Australia
We toured with Cycling Croatia in July 14, our family of 4 (inc sons aged 19 & 16) was a mixture of different abilities and fitness levels; it was one of the best holidays we've ever had. Kruno and Marko are exceptional hosts; they took real care, providing all the support we needed (and some needed more than others!) but also gave us space when needed. They were knowledgable, informative, helpful, patient, friendly (and occasionally hilarious) The holiday itself was very well organised, the cycling was challenging enough for one very keen cyclist in our group, and enjoyable for everyone thanks to the great support for those who didn't want so much of a challenge. Croatia was wonderful - what a beautiful country - and we felt that Cycling Croatia had really made an effort to show us the true spirit of the country with some fantastic visits to local enterprises, where we sampled many Croatian delights! Also, the route followed some roads we would never have found ourselves, amazing scenery to rival the Amalfi Coast (but much, much quieter), and beautiful bays with wonderful swimming that it seemed only Croatians knew about. The accommodation was of mixed quality - there were a couple of amusingly 'quirky' hotels (and I should mention that one of these isn't on the standard list for this tour - our tour was tailored to our own needs with a couple of extra nights) - but all were in great locations, and didn't diminish the overall quality of the tour/holiday. A couple of the hotels were exceptionally good. In summary: we ate, drank (quite a lot - Zivjeli!), cycled, sweated, and laughed all the way around beautiful Southern Dalmatia in great company. It was an outstanding holiday. We look forward to cycling with them again in future. Alison Lawson, Edinburgh, Scotland
We cycled with Kruno and his team from June 13-19, it was our first cycling holidays. I usually go to all inclusive resorts and go for daily excursions, but with Cycling Croatia, the vacation is the excursion. Yes you'll likely be tired at first, but it's a good tired and you'll be rewarded with excellent food and company each day. By the end of the week, I felt like a million bucks. Also, I can't say enough about the professionalism of Krunos and his team. The are extremely friendly, always prepared and will bend over backwards for their guest. The bikes were brand new shinny trek 7.4 hybrids or trek road bikes (not sure what model) but also new. My wife and I both started with a road bikes, but quickly discovered using hybrids was the way to go. Not used to road bikes, Kruno traded my bike for the hybrid he was using half-way during the first ride. After coming into a curb too hard, the boys repaired my flat tire like a nascar pit crew. Looking at the daily distances, we initially believed that we would tour for only half-days and quickly realized that the daily rides are actually meant to fill out the day (but with breaks to visit wineries, an olive oil factory, oyster and mussels tasting, etc). Dinners were always filled with good conversation (group dinners every night except for one evening), the food was good to excellent and wine (or the drink of your choice) was included most nights. Marco with his interesting history lessons will take you back in time and teach you (in an amusing way) about Croatian history. I guess my only complaint was disbanding our group on the last day. Five stars for this class act company!!!! Julie and Pascal, Otawa, Canada
My wife and I have recently returned from the Dalmatia Cycling trip, and quite simply, it was the best holiday we have had in years. The coastal scenery is stunning, the food and drink are excellent, and the trip itself is very well planned and organised by Kruno and Petra. They really were the perfect hosts, with Petra taking care of you on the bike, and Kruno following closely in his van should you need any help. The help extended to more water, ice, fruit, snacks, and if you wanted a rest, putting your bike on the roof rack and helping you into the van. Spot on. No stress, no pressure to keep up with the group, just do your own thing knowing that help is never far away. So, the same as other trips then? Not really. The difference on this trip was the emphasis that both Kruno and Petra paid to make sure everything ran smoothly and that you had a really enjoyable time. Nothing is too much trouble, and you see and do things that most tourists to Croatia will never experience. The oyster farm for instance, plus the meal with the local family on Korcula was epic. I have never seen so much meat placed in front of a small group of people. We did our best, but we were never going to finish it off. For me personally though, it was the small things that made this an 11/10 trip as opposed to simply 10/10. For instance, there are 3 winery visits on the itinerary, but whilst my wife loves the grape, I prefer a cold lager. At dinner on the first evening, Kruno took note of this, and when we were sitting in front of a table of food at the first winery, and everyone was starting to sample their first wine, lo and behold, Kruno had popped to the van and returned with 2 ice cold bottles of beer for me. To say that was appreciated was an understatement, and at that moment in time, I would have given the trip a 12/10. Needless to say, that pattern continued at subsequent winery stops, plus the visit to the oyster farm. A small detail I know, but it's things like that that really do make the difference. So, would we recommend the trip? Absolutely. Would we return to Croatia for another cycling trip? No doubt about it, and have already pencilled in a week next year, of course with Cycling Croatia, only this time on their trip further north. To conclude, a top trip, with top hosts, and I cannot recommend both Croatia and Cycling Croatia enough. Graham & Beryl Carney , South Yorkshire, UK
We were 4 South Africans that joined the Dalmatia tour in August. In total we were 10 riders in the tour. Previously we were on self-organized cycling tours and never joined a formal tour. This tour exceeded our biggest expectations. A 100% overall point for satisfaction is a huge understatement! Kruno and Petra, the company owners, were our tour guides. They were extremely professional, friendly, very helpful, caring and informative. They were the best hosts any tour can dream of. They went the extra mile to help and accommodate all the individual needs. The meet and greet evening was great with the group. We had a great dinner together and our beautiful cycle shirts were handed to everyone. Kruno briefed us in detail about the first day and had everyone at ease and very excited. We had very good bicycles , helmets, water bottles and bags for small stuff on the bicycle – all tagged with your name. Small bags with personal belongings were transported in the backup van. Kruno drove the backup van and Petra joined us on the bicycles. Every morning we were briefed about the route and the plans for the day. We also received a detailed map and kilometre markings for each day. During the day we were entertained with lots of fruit, water, energy bars, ice etc. The backup van was always in the nearby distance. Accommodation (hotels) was excellent with great breakfast served and all were centrally located. The logistics (luggage, bikes, dinners etc.) was outstanding and Kruno was key in this success. Kruno and Petra introduced us to Croatian food, wine and culture. We visited several wine cellars for wine tasting and delicious snacks. The several flavours of grappa were fantastic!! We also visited an ancient olive farm – again wine and snacks were served. The ferry to a private island to enjoy the fresh oysters and mussels was one of the many highlights!! We cycled about 50 km a day. The routes are well selected by Kruno and Petra. Croatia is really the most beautiful country we visited - especially the Adriatic Sea and little villages and harbours. The cameradie between the group members were fantastic. The rest of our group was 5 ladies from Denver and a travel writer. We had good laughs and motivated each other. We recommend this tour as a “must do”. It is absolute worth every pound. Everything is perfectly organized, the Dalmations are BEAUTIFUL and the guides SUPERB – just register for the tour, sit back on your bike, relax and enjoy every moment!!! The sail & bike adventure delivered beyond our expectations — 5 STAR++ Ivo has gone out of his way to put together an incredible experience — one we will definitely be returning for! Ivo was incredibly knowledgeable in both the local terrain (much of which he has curated) as well as local cities, customs and the “good spots”. He was a pleasure to ride with and pushed us to be our best. Croatian Undulation is something you want to ask about!
It is really very difficult to put into words what we were able to experience. It was by far the best trip of my life, I can’t put it any other way. The ship, the crew, the guides, the tours, the food and and and everything was just perfect. Thank you so much for letting me experience that.
Ivo’s trip was mindblowing! It was so much fun. I’ve never used a mountain bike guide before but Ivo’s unparalleled knowledge of the local trails and history made a massive difference! We rode trails we’d have never ever found (secret entrances to centuries old paths!) and who’d have guessed such trails were such fun bike trails! Techy, rocky, steep, (but only in spots) with steps and switchbacks, plus other more flowy ones cross country kinds, all leading down to little villages, espressos, and jumping in the blue, blue, Adriatic Sea. Adrenaline and sensory overload in the best way. Ivo knows every foot of every trail – gives you the most detailed lowdown of all time- and happens to be a badass rider and humble Croatian bike star, we discovered too. Worth it!
If you’re looking for a great bike & boat experience, look no further- you found it!

Frequently Asked Questions About Bike Tours in Croatia
Yes! Croatia is fantastic for cycling, and here are four reasons why:
- The landscapes are diverse: From the stunning Adriatic coastline with its charming towns and islands to the rolling hills of Istria and the leg-burning climbs of the Velebit mountains, Croatia offers something for every cyclist.
- Croatia has a well-developed cycling infrastructure: There are numerous well-maintained cycling routes throughout Croatia, catering to all levels of experience.
- The weather is perfect: From spring to autumn, the weather is mild and sunny and the rainfall is minimal, making for ideal biking conditions.
- The cuisine is to die for: After a day of cycling, you can recuperate with some of Croatia’s delicious food and wine, with delicacies from Italy, the Slavic world, and the Ottoman Empire.
Overall, Croatia is a dream destination for cyclists of all levels.
Determining the “best” place to cycle in Croatia depends on your individual preferences and cycling style. However, two regions consistently rank highly due to their diverse and scenic landscapes:
Istria: This northwestern peninsula offers a delightful mix of rolling hills, charming hilltop towns, vineyards, olive groves, and the dramatic Učka mountain range.
- Our recommendations: Explore the medieval towns of Motovun, Grožnjan, and Labin, cycle through vineyards on the Parenzana route, conquer the challenging climbs of Učka Mountain, or simply enjoy leisurely rides along the coast.
Dalmatia: Croatia’s more southern coastal region boasts a stunning coastline dotted with islands, charming villages, and historic towns.
- Our recommendations: Cycle along the scenic Makarska Riviera, explore the world-famous party hub of Hvar, discover the historical city of Dubrovnik, or embark on a bike and boat tour of Croatia’s many islands.
Honorable mentions : Visit Velebit mountain for challenging rides and spectacular coastal panoramas, head to the flat plains of Slavonia for a smooth and culturally rich bike ride, or explore Zagreb, Croatia’s bike-friendly capital!
Yes, cycling from Dubrovnik to Split is possible, and very a popular ride for both beginner and experienced cyclists. It’s a good way to experience as much of the Croatian coast as possible..
You can choose to take the direct coastal route along the Adriatic, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise waters and picturesque islands. However, be aware that this route involves some challenging climbs and can be busy with traffic during peak season.
Alternatively, you can avoid the crowds on a Croatian bike & boat adventure ! This scenic route incorporates a sailboat or ferries to explore the stunning Dalmatian islands, such as Hvar, Korčula, and Brač. This option allows you to break up the journey with relaxing rides and explore the unique charm of each island.
The total distance between Dubrovnik and Split is approximately 210 kilometers (130 miles), and you can complete it in 3-7 days depending on your chosen route, pace, and how many stops you make.
Cycling in Croatia is generally safe. The road infrastructure and many of the trails are well-developed and well-maintained, the locals are used to tourists and extremely friendly, and Croatia experiences less traffic than many bigger European destinations, especially during the shoulder seasons (fall through spring).
However, there are still some factors to consider before your Croatia bike trip. Many of the roads in Croatia still don’t have dedicated cycling lanes, so you’ll be sharing them with drivers. Also, Some roads, particularly in rural areas, might have uneven surfaces or potholes, and the weather can change quickly, with some regions experiencing very intense winds called “bura” that make riding impossible.
By following road rules, being aware of your surroundings, and going with an expert guide, you can significantly enhance your cycling safety in Croatia.

Wonderful! The cycling was hard work at times but very rewarding. The accommodation was pretty good. The food was excellent and plenty of it. The guides were very committed and took great care of us. I will definitely be using this company again to explore another part of Europe.
How Do I Know Which Croatia Bike Tour Is Right For Me?
Choosing the right Croatia bike tour boils down to two things:
- Where in Croatia do you want to cycle?
- What kind of experience do you want on your Croatia bike tour?
Based on the above criteria, we’ve designed the following tours to help cyclists explore the best of Croatia:
1. Split to Dubrovnik: Island Hopping the Dalmatian Coast Bike Tour
If you have beaches, islands, and exploring Croatia’s numerous UNESCO heritage sites in mind, our Split to Dubrovnik: Island Hopping the Dalmatian Coast Bike Tour is what you’re looking for.
This tour starts in Split, and covers three Dalmatian islands — Brač, Hvar, and Korčula — before ending in Dubrovnik. Besides their gorgeous beaches, these islands are also the sunniest part of Croatia, receiving more than 2700 hours of sunshine per year.
At the beginning of each day, we sail with our bikes on a boat to the next island, then spend the rest of the day exploring the island on a bike.
2. Splendors of Slovenia and Croatia Bike Tour
If you want to combine Slovenia with your Croatia bike tour, then our Splendors of Slovenia and Croatia Bike Tour is right for you. This tour begins from Ljubljana in Slovenia, covers the famous Lake Bled, and ends in Rovinj on Croatia’s north-eastern coast after traversing the Vipava Valley. On the way, it also passes through Motovun, famous for its black and white truffles that are prized in kitchens around the world.
3. The Wine Roads of Istria
If you’ve fine Croatian wines and the Adriatic coast on your mind, then this is the tour for you. Istria is also called the Tuscany of Croatia for its fine wines and its delicious truffles. The Wine Roads of Istria tour starts in Buje in northern Istria and ends in Pula in the south. Along the way, it traverses Croatia’s famously gorgeous coastline with its turquoise waters, and allows you to explore famous historical monuments including a Roman amphitheater and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What Is the Best Time For Croatia Bike Tours?
Generally, the most popular time for a bike tour in Croatia is during the spring (end of April to June) and autumn (September to October) months. During these times, the weather is typically mild, with warm temperatures and less crowded compared to the peak summer season. You'll also enjoy lush greenery and blooming flowers in the spring, while the autumn offers beautiful foliage and grape harvests in some areas.
However, if you prefer warmer weather and don't mind the crowds, the summer months (July and August) can also be a good time to cycle in Croatia. Just be prepared for higher temperatures and more tourists, especially in popular tourist destinations.
What Does a Day On Your Croatia Bike Tour Look Like?
At Art of Bicycle Trips, we believe in experiential travel. Our tours combine cycling with cultural activities and nature exploration.
An average day on tour includes 4-5 hours of biking, with the rest of the day reserved for local experiences such as exploring local attractions, interacting with local communities, visiting monuments and museums, learning local crafts, trying local cuisine and more.
Each guided Croatia bike tour is led by an expert trip leader who is also a local. Our trip leaders are a repository of local knowledge, routes, customs, cultures, and cuisines. By employing only local guides, we also help generate employment opportunities for local communities.
All hotels on tour are carefully chosen for their character, comfort, and cuisine, and each hotel becomes an experience in itself that guests can enjoy.
A support vehicle accompanies guests at all times, and if at any point a rider does not feel like biking any further, they can always load their bike and sit in the support van.
Our tours are all-inclusive, which means meals, permits, fees, transportation and other additional costs are included in the price of the trip, unless otherwise stated.
We pride ourselves on the degree of customization we provide on each tour, and are always happy to accommodate any special requests from our guests relating to the tour.

Meet at our 4-star hotel in the historic Split and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
Marvie Hotel, Jupiter Heritage Hotel, or Marmont Hotel
Following your arrival in Croatia, you have the day to explore the beautiful town of Split and the Roman ruins on your own. Most visitors consider these sights a “must see” while they are in the area!
Our group will meet in our hotel at 5 pm and set up our bikes and equipment, followed by a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Enjoy the next two nights in Split at a lovely 4-star hotel in the heart of this historic city.
Ferry to island of Brač, famous for its limestone, pedal to the Olive Oil Museum for a tasting.
– Breakfast – Lunch
From the Diocletian town of Split, we will board a morning ferry to the island of Brač for the day. Stone from Brač represents the soul of the island. It has been used in the construction of some of the most famous buildings in the world: the UNESCO-protected Diocletian Palace in Split, the White House in Washington D.C., and the Pope’s altar in the Vatican – to name a few. Since the islands along the Dalmatian Coast are also famous for their olive oil, we will stop for a tasting and an overview of its history and methods of production at the Olive Oil Museum. Our Brač tour will finish at a local restaurant, called a konoba, with fresh and domestic food – a fitting reward after pedaling through this beautiful and hilly landscape. Dinner is on your own after we take the ferry back to Split for another night.
Cycle along the coastline on the island of Hvar.
– Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
Adriana Hotel or Riva Marina
Today we ferry from Split to the island of Hvar in the morning. While the name Hvar derives from the Greek – Pharos, the island was historically under Venetian influence. This influence is exemplified by the picturesque architecture of the town of Hvar with its spectacular coastline and climate, red tile roofs and ancient city walls. Today, take in the wondrous scent of the lavender farms as you cycle to the town of Jelsa, situated on a tranquil bay nestled between the island’s two highest peaks. We finish in the island’s namesake town, Hvar. Lodging will be at another 4-star accommodation in town with dinner at a local restaurant.
On to the island Korčula, land of oaks and pines. Sample regional cooking (peka) and wines.
Hotel Korsal or Hotel Liburna or Marko Polo Hotel
From Hvar, we will jump on a private boat to transfer to the town of Vela Luka on the island of Korčula where we will spend the next two days. During our first day on Korčula, we will cycle the island from east to the west, passing through the lush forests of holm oaks and Mediterranean pines. The island is so densely forested with that the 4th century B.C. Greeks dubbed the island “Korkyra Melaina” (dark or black Korčula). In modern times, the island is famous for its olive groves. After settling in at our 4-star hotel, we have a special dinner experience tonight. Wine is included (but that’s not what makes it special). We will be sampling peka. More of a Dalmatian cooking tradition than a recipe, peka refers to a slow-cooking method which means “cooked under the lid.” High heat and the vacuum created by the lid infuses potatoes and vegetables with flavor and renders “meat so soft you can chew it with your eyebrows”. A great variety of dishes are prepared in this delicious fashion.
Explore Korčula, a scenic town on a lovely bay. Enjoy a wine tasting on us!
– Breakfast
Today, you have a hard choice to make! You can enjoy some more riding on the island of Korčula, or you can spend the day sea kayaking, sailing, or exploring more of Korčula’s (the town’s) history and attractions. Famous as the birthplace of renowned traveler Marco Polo, the town boasts an exhibition about the famous explorer in the center of town. Korčula is also well known for the mock battle dance (Moreška), performed only by males from Korčula town families, with each soldier holding two swords. It is traditionally performed on July 29 (St. Theodore’s Day) and weekly during the summer season. Dinner is on your own tonight. Layover day excursions are not included in the tour price, but the wine tasting is on us!
Pedal from the coastline through vineyards to the world-renowned city of Dubrovnik.
Hotel Lapad or Hotel Lero
After breakfast, we will take a short ferry to the town of Orebić on the Pelješac Peninsula. It’s a spectacular ride to an even more spectacular destination. Cycle the coast past oyster farms and stop for a fresh sample if you like! Heading inland along the peninsula, vineyards dominate the landscape. Compare the Croatian varietals you have tried with Dalmatian favorites like Pošip or Dingač. In Dubrovnik, before heading out on the town for our farewell dinner, enjoy a tour of the city, featuring some of the longest, best-preserved city walls in Europe. See why the popular TV series, Game of Thrones, chose this location for filming its capital city – “King’s Landing”. Enjoy fabulous accommodations at at either the Hotel Lapad or the Hotel Lero in Dubrovnik.
A farewell breakfast concludes our adventure.
After breakfast at our hotel (included), we make our final farewells before heading our separate ways. Shuttles to the airport or other destinations are not included.

Our Croatia Bike Tours
The Istrian Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea and is shared by three countries, Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The central and southern region belongs to Croatia, which makes up 90% of the peninsula. Our itinerary provides you with the opportunity to incorporate Italy (Venice day tour and Trieste starting point) and Slovenia (part of an available ride) as a part of your Croatian adventure.
The Istrian Peninsula is two worlds. There is the traditional Istrian interior with its hilltop villages set among ancient farms, forests, and rolling hills. In contrast, the coast is craggy, scenic, and framed by the sparkling waters of the Adriatic. This is also where you find walled cities that date back to the Venetian Republic. Istria is the gastronomic heart of Croatia and attracts foodies from across the world for its fusion of Italian and Slavic cuisines. Culturally, the Greeks, Romans, Slavs, Venetians, and the Habsburgs have all left their marks here. Highlights include the beautiful coastal towns of Rovinj and Poreč and the hilltop villages of Motovun and Grožnjan.
All trips are customized for you; your dates, your ride distances and your style of lodging. During your bike tour, we take care of all the logistics and our support vans are always nearby so you simply enjoy the freedom of cycling at your own pace.
LifeCycle Adventures is an owner-operated company – we live and ride in the areas we operate. So, you know you will be looked after by real locals who will help you find the hidden gems wherever you are riding. Learn more about the LifeCycle Adventures difference.

BIKE CHOICES
Hybrid bike.
Hybrids bikes are a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. They have a relaxed riding position and are great for beginners and intermediate riders. A typical model is the Trek 7.3 FX with Shimano components and high-pressure road tires for better cycling efficiency than your typical hybrid.
Our road bikes are a racing style bike with drop handlebars. The road bikes are faster bikes than the hybrids with less upright riding position. A typical model is the Émonda ALR 5 with aluminum frame, carbon forks, and Shimano 105 components. (NOTE: Some of the smaller roads in Puglia can be a little rough making a hybrid bikes a better choice for some riders.)
Our eBikes are designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills. The ride position is very similar to our hybrids. We typically rent Scott E-Sub equipped with a 250W E-drive Bosch motor. If one rider in a couple is stronger than the other, an eBike can be a great choice for the less-strong rider.
If you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there. Please ask about options for bike shipping and assembly.
Receiving & Assembly per bike charge to receive bike from shipper, assemble the bike and repack it and deliver it to a shipper at the end of the tour.
Bike Boxes a per box charge for the extra logistics needed to handle bike boxes during a tour. Note: this fee can be avoided if you leave your box with your start/end hotel.
Tandem Bike a per bike fee for the extra logistics to handle a tandem bike that is brought by a guest.

Handpicked experiences, expert crew, trusted by many, unbeatable support, things to know.
We have motor vessels that are either made of wood or steel, and they come in various sizes, shapes, and categories. Although some of the ships in our fleet are over a century old, they have undergone several reconstructions to make them suitable for tourism. These boats used to be used for freight transportation in the past. On the other hand, most of the steel or iron yachts we have are either new or recently built.
While sometimes referred to as sailing vessels, our ships mostly run on motors. It’s worth noting that many of our steel boats lack masts and sails altogether.
Passengers who prioritize privacy, luxury, and comfort may find the Premium Superior or Premium category vessels more suitable for their needs. On the other hand, the Traditional Ensuite vessels are ideal for younger passengers, such as friends or special interest groups, like alpinists, bikers, and similar, who do not mind sharing a small space and bathrooms for a week. However, it’s worth noting that Traditional Ensuite vessels usually do not have air-conditioned cabins, and most are equipped with bunk beds.
Anywhere from 20 to 40 passengers, depending on the size of the boat.
In Croatia, the standard sockets are Type F, which are grounded and have two pins. They are compatible with plug types C, E, and F and have a power output of 16 A and 220 V. Some newer vessels also have USB sockets.
The vessels do not provide fishing equipment for passengers, but passengers are allowed to bring their own fishing equipment. However, it is essential to note that you need to obtain special permission for fishing needs from specialized agencies in harbors.
Not always. We suggest you bring your own equipment if you plan to snorkel.
Life-saving boats and life jackets are available on all vessels and can be found in marked wardrobes on the deck, in the salon, or under the beds in cabins. In case you cannot swim, it is important to inform the crew and the captain. While on the ship, it is essential to pay attention to the following safety measures:
- The stairs on the vessels can be steep and narrow, so it’s important to be careful while going up or down. The decks can also be very slippery, especially in wet conditions, so passengers should use caution and hold onto the railings when walking around the vessel.
- Climbing the foremast, jumping off the deck during the cruise, or going too far from the vessel during swim pauses are strictly prohibited.
- In the busy high season, harbors can become congested, and vessels may have to dock beside each other, so it is essential to exercise caution when moving between them. Crew members are available to assist passengers who require help. However, the cruise is not recommended for those with limited mobility or in wheelchairs.
Even though the tap water on board is of good quality, we would not recommend drinking it. There is a water dispenser with reusable glasses. Please feel free to bring along your own refillable bottle. Please use water on board rationally.
The main currency accepted is Euro. Where possible exchange the money in a bank or retrieve money from an ATM. Drinks onboard and all extra services such as transfers, excursions and accommodation need to be paid in local currency. Premium and Premium Superior vessels offer credit card payment possibilities.
Most major towns and islands in Croatia such as Opatija, Dubrovnik, Split etc. will have ATMs that are linked to international networks; however, smaller towns may not have ATM facilities available. Credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely recognized and are accepted in most tourist areas; however, it is always a good idea to have a certain amount of cash if you are travelling off the beaten path.
We believe that tips should reflect good service and your satisfaction with the guide/cruise manager, crew and overall tour. Crew gratuities are equally distributed among the crew. Tipping is voluntary and completely at the discretion of individual trip participants. Your own currency or Euro is acceptable.
The average sea temperature during July and August is 24.5°C and the temperature average during July and August is 28°C. Be sure to take some clothes for possible cooler evenings (for example some sports fitting, windbreaker or similar) for spring and autumn departures.
The length of the cycling routes planned for each day is an estimate and takes into account local conditions and possible detours or shortcuts. The sailing and cycling routes may be adjusted depending on weather conditions and the abilities of the cyclists on board. Typically, departures are in the morning, usually after breakfast.
The Premium Superior and Premium ships offer cabins with twin or double beds. Some can accommodate up to three people, with a double bed and an extra bed above or beside it. However, due to a limited number of available bed types, we cannot guarantee a specific bed type. Nonetheless, we aim to allocate guests to cabins based on their preferences. If you have a request, please indicate it when making a reservation, and we will do our best to accommodate it.
On Premium and Premium Superior vessels, cabins are equipped with twin or double beds. The twin bed size is approximately 90/100 m x 190/200 cm, while the double bed size is around 150/160 m x 190/200 m. The Traditional Ensuite category cabins mostly feature bunk beds, but some vessels also offer twin or double beds. The size of a double bed is 130/140 m x 190/200 m, while the bunk bed size is approximately 80/90 m x 190/200 m.
Cabins on the vessel are located on two levels: on the deck and below the deck. On-deck cabins can be found on either the main deck where passengers first embark or the upper deck above the main deck. Cabins below the deck are situated in the hull of the vessel. The ones on the deck offer the benefit of direct access to the sea and more fresh air, while cabins below the deck are sometimes quieter because only fellow passengers who booked lower deck cabins pass by, and not all passengers from your vessel or other vessels when docked. These cabins are also comfortable because they are located at sea level, which naturally cools them, and the hallways below deck are often air-conditioned, which can also affect the temperature. Cabins on the lower deck usually have small portholes.
Cabins on the lower deck are situated in the boat’s hull and typically have a small porthole. However, according to Croatian law and vessel regulations, portholes must be kept closed during navigation to prevent water from entering the cabin. When the vessel is docked in the port, it is permissible to open the portholes. On newer ships, particularly those in the Premium Superior and Premium categories, which have steel hulls and air-conditioned cabins, the portholes cannot be opened.
The frequency of cabin service depends on the vessel category. Premium Superior and Premium vessels have daily cabin service, which means the crew will clean and tidy your cabin daily. Fresh bed linen is also provided before your arrival. However, on Traditional Ensuite category vessels, the personnel does not enter your room during the cruise, so you are responsible for keeping it clean. Two towels per person are provided, and the crew only cleans the commonly used toilets and bathrooms. If you wish to have your cabin cleaned during the cruise, you can request this service at an extra cost.
Premium Superior and Premium cabins have air conditioning, except for limited times when there is restricted access to electricity, such as after midnight. Traditional Ensuite cabins do not have air conditioning, but the hallways and salons on the lower deck usually do. Air conditioning is only available when the motor or generator is running, or the vessel is connected to electricity while docked at the harbor. In some smaller fishing harbors without an electrical plug, the air conditioning is turned off to maintain peace and quiet.
If you want to sleep on the deck under the stars, it’s recommended to bring a sleeping bag because taking mattresses, pillows, and sheets out of the cabins is not allowed.
The vessels provide limited electricity and water capacities. A generator is available on all the boats to generate electricity, but it is not on during the night or while the ship is docked in a peaceful bay due to the noise. The water tanks on the vessels have enough capacity to match the number of cabins and beds and are always filled with enough water. Assuming everyone uses water rationally. In addition, the ships are equipped with central heaters that provide warm water.
The food served on board the ships is comparable to the typical cuisine found in Croatia. The Premium Superior and Premium vessels provide buffet-style breakfasts, while the Traditional Ensuite vessels offer continental breakfasts that include tea, coffee, fruit juice, bread, butter, jam, and sometimes ham and cheese. If you prefer an English breakfast, you can request it when booking your cruise or upon arrival. All deluxe vessel categories have three-course lunches with a salad bar and cheese plate, and all premium and traditional vessels provide three-course lunches. Dinner is not included, as the cruise company recommends that passengers try local restaurants.
The captain hosts a weekly “Captain’s dinner” where guests and crew members can socialize while enjoying an optional meat or fish meal. This dinner is included in the deluxe and premium categories of the vessel. However, for those in the Traditional Ensuite and Traditional, you can arrange and pay for the “Captain’s dinner” when making a reservation or at the time of the event. The dress code for this dinner is Smart Casual/Elegant.
Due to the small kitchen space available, we have limited capacity for preparing special meals for individuals with specific dietary requirements, such as vegetarians. If you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, please inform us at the time of booking so that our onboard chef can make arrangements to accommodate your needs to the best of their ability.
Bringing and consuming your own beverages on the vessel is prohibited. Instead, you can order drinks from the vessel’s salon, which serves as a restaurant, living room, and bar. The bar offers a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. If you would like a drink that is unavailable at the time, please inform the crew, and they will do their best to arrange it for you at the next port of call.
Customers can pay for drinks purchased from the vessel bar using EUR currency. Daily reports of the previous day’s drink consumption will be provided to clients, and payment can be made during the checkout process. A credit card is also acceptable for all deluxe and premium vessel categories.

Self-guided bike tours in Croatia: how to plan a trip + where to go
Cycling tours in Croatia offer a bewildering array of options, including self-guided and guided tours. It’s not surprising there’s so much choice; when you look at a map of Croatia, it’s soon obvious why it’s so perfect for cyclists.
Croatia is home to more than 1,000 islands, as well as medieval towns and UNESCO world heritage sites. Its coastal areas have a cuisine that’s been heavily influenced by Italy and Greece, plus a lovely Mediterranean climate. Cycling in Croatia on a self-guided bike trip is the way to find charming villages, hidden beaches, and dining spots away from the usual tourist paths. Our tip: wear padded shorts and pack your swimming gear!
Exploring Croatia by bike is simply the best way to discover the country and in this article, we pick the brains of Croatia cycling expert, Dalibor Rudan, who founded Fiore Tours in 1992. He has a passion for helping cyclists discover Croatia with authentic travel and cycling experiences. Fiore Tours run guided, semi-guided and self-guided cycling tours in Croatia.
In this article Dalibor focuses on where to go on a self-guided cycling tour in Croatia. He shares tips and insights to help you have an amazing trip. Enjoy!
Part 1: How to plan a self-guided cycling holiday in Croatia
First things first…
1. Why go on a cycling holiday in Croatia?
Beautiful scenery.
While inland Croatia is full of natural reserves and beauty, Croatia’s coastline is really the star of the show.
Croatia includes 1,246 islands; perfect for those that love beaches and island-hopping cycling tours! Korcula, Hvar and Mljet islands are some of the best-known destinations.
The terrain is generally small rolling hills, particularly in Istria and on the Dalmatian islands, which makes it perfect for a relaxed cycling holiday (electric bikes are available too!).
History and architecture
Croatia has evolved under the influence of many European cultures. It was occupied by the Romans, Greeks, Illyrians, and Slavics, and all have left traces in Croatia’s development and culture.
This means that on a cycling tour in Croatia you’ll come across medieval town centres with battlement walls and ancient amphitheatres – as well as Cold War leftovers. The country is scattered with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the Euphrasius Basilica in the coastal town of Poreč. Even better known, is Dubrovnik’s Old Town (thanks Game of Thrones!); bordered by mountains and sea and surrounded by incredible city walls, it’s a sight to behold.
Croatia is described as being part of Southeast Europe, but it’s located very centrally in Europe and is very well connected.
It boasts five principal international entry points: the airports of Zagreb, Pula, Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik. These airports accommodate the bulk of scheduled and chartered air traffic from both Europe and North America. Among them, Split Airport is the busiest (Split is the second largest city of Croatia).
If you’re thinking of a multi-stop holiday in Europe, Croatia is a great choice as it shares borders with many other fantastic countries: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro – as well as the Adriatic Sea of course! Give yourself plenty of time as there’s lots to explore.
Croatian people are known for their friendliness and helpfulness. Even better, after Croatian, English is the most commonly used ‘foreign’ language. Most hotels, shops, and tourist-related services have an English speaker available.
It won’t come as a surprise, that Croatia is heaven for seafood lovers. Pasta is also a speciality here and you’ll also find amazing cheese. For example, Pag island is famous for its sheep’s cheese infused with wild sage (it’s called Paški sir). And did we mention Istria’s white truffles?
Istria’s excellent Malvazija wine, and Korčula’s Pošip wine is also very popular with our guests who tour with us.
2. Why go on a self-guided cycling holiday in Croatia?
While we offer guided and self-guided tours, I think self-guided tours offer a great middle ground. They’re a cost-efficient way to get the most out of a cycling holiday for the following reasons:
Inside knowledge
With over a thousand picturesque islands and many places that would be excellent to ride in, the challenge is knowing where to begin.
This is where local experts like us come in handy. They know the ferry schedules, the well-maintained cycling paths that avoid tourist crowds, the vineyards that offer tastings along the way, and the hidden beaches with turquoise waters. This is the kind of intel that makes a trip and helps you really get under the skin of the country.
No need to wait for others
When you’re on holiday, you want to do things at a pace that suits you; not be constantly waiting for others or chasing to keep up. A self-guided holiday gives you this freedom and flexibility.
Want to stop and have a chat with the shepherd you bump into at the beach? Sure, no problem! A self-guided trip gives you time for interaction with locals and exploring the places you’re interested in on your own.
Choose your start date
The schedule is flexible – you can choose your travel dates and cycling days and distances. You don’t need to fit into an organised travel schedule.
Choose your travel companions
You get to pick who you ride with; you don’t have to cross your fingers and hope that you’ll like the other people you’re riding with.
The right level of adventure
Self-guided travel provides safety, security and the right amount of pre planning that you don’t get with DIY travel arrangements.
At the end of your trip you’ll know that you’ve navigated your way through a new country with a good deal of independence. Even if you’re a more experienced cyclist, this brings a great sense of accomplishment.

3. What are the best places to cycle in Croatia?
We’ve been running cycling tours in Croatia since 2000. There are many great cycling options to choose from, but here are my pick of the best self-guided cycling tours in Croatia.
This map of Croatia shows you the Istria Peninsula in the north (you can see Pula and Rovinj marked on it) and Dalmatia to the south (with Split and Dubrovnik, as well as some of the islands, marked on it).
Istria Peninsula
Where is it.
Istria is a triangular area, that is part of Croatia and Slovenia. Its northernmost tip lies in Italy. It is located between the Gulf of Kvarner and the Gulf of Trieste. It has 445km of coastline and an area of 3,160 square kilometres.
This part of Croatia is closest to Italy and this is reflected in the food and also the fact the much of the population is bilingual, speaking both Croatian and Italian.
What’s it like to cycle the Istria Peninsula?
One of the draws of this region is that its quieter than the Dalmatian Coast to the south. It’s also got a rich mix of Roman, Venetian and Austiran historic sites, with seafront ports like romantic Rovinj, hilltop towns like Grožnjan and Roman ampitheatres like the one at Pula.
There are tons of vineyards and the food is also excellent, thanks in part to its proximity with Italy. It’s perfect for leisurely cycling holidays!
What are the highlights of this region?
- Pine forests, meadows, vineyards and olive groves at the foot of the Alps , dotted with medieval hilltop villages, which many compare with Tuscany. On the coast, you’ll find dream-like beaches and fabulous bays such as the white pebble beaches in Rabac. Istria is also home to Deep rivers, some of which are cut deep into the limestone and are often compared to the fjords of Scandinavia.
- Grožnjan and Motovun are historic towns, rich in arts and history, with nearby Livade known for truffles. Istria is the place for lovers of truffle-rich pasta dishes!
- Porec – the UNESCO-protected Euphrasia Basilica in Porec is a sight to be seen.
- Rovinj – cycle to the idyllic small town of Rovinj on the west coast of Istria; with its narrow streets and tightly crowded houses, it’s one of the most beautiful places in Croatia.
- The weather – Istria is also know for having more than 2,300 hours of sunshine per year.
Who would it suit?
Food-loving cyclists, looking for demanding bike rides in the inland hills – or families cruising on the Parenzana Railway route.
What are the cycling routes like?
Whether you stick to “Blue Istria“, and its flatter routes along the coast, or head inland to the rolling hills of “Green Istria“, you’ll find routes to suit.
The 120km Parenzana Railway is a popular, gentle route connecting through Livade to Vižinada. This route is particularly appealing since it leads you to the beautiful Roman town of Porec and it’s pretty easygoing all the way!
Small group or self-guided?
The peninsula is ideal for self-guided tours, especially along the straightforward Parenzana Railway. Options range from 5 to 8 days, covering 30km to 60km per day.
Tell us about your tours
- Road biking – a loop ride around the Istrian peninsula with a choice of daily distances, nice climbs, riding mostly in secondary roads with low traffic: Road cycling through Istria .
- Gravel biking – Istria is perfect spot for those searching for gravel biking. There are many gravel roads of different difficulty with a blend of secondary asphalted roads can make a an amazing gravel bike holiday: Gravel biking Trieste to Pula .
- Family trails – Riding on former railway “Parenzana“ is a perfect cycle path for families seeking cycling vacation on traffic free roads: Family cycling holiday Slovenia to Croatia.
- Luxury e-biking – searching for a luxury cycling holiday with extraordinary small boutique hotels, restaurants with excellent food, visits or boutique wineries and riding in a peaceful environment on e-bike: Luxury e-bike tour in Istria, Croatia.
Dalmatia Coast
Croatia’s Dalmation Coast is the most popular and touristy stretch of coastline in the country, stretching from the coast town of Zadar to the Bay of Kotor. It’s alive with Mediterranean admosphere, nice covers and famous places, such as the must-visit town of Dubrovnik and the city of Split, as well as islands such as the ritzy Hvar and rustic Korcula.
What’s it like to cycle the Dalmatian Coast?
The Dalmatia Coast is the place to come if you want a road cycling holiday and island-hopping is on your agenda. Croatia’s central Dalmatian islands are packed close together, making the views between them a lovely patchwork of rolling hill and sparkling Adriatic waters. Even someone who hates swimming in the sea will find it hard to defy the temptation of this region’s crystal-clear waters (in fact in 2022, it was top of the pristine water charts ).
Many of the islands are just 20 or so kilometres across, which makes riding around them quite achievable. On Hvar, you can climb away from the crowds, whilst on Mljet you’re surrounded by national park.
The mainland is home to famous UNESCO sites like Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the old romantic towns of Dubrovnik and Trogir (haven’t heard of Trogir? Well it was named as one of the top 10 island cities by National Geographic …). Between Split and Dubrovnik, the Peljesac Peninsula features the second longest defensive wall in the world ; construction began in 1358 and it was originally more than seven kilometres long, surrounding and protecting the city of Ston.
Meanwhile, the beaches aren’t too shabby either. The “Golden Horn” on Brac, Dalmatia has according to Forbes magazine one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
- Dubrovnik – cyclist or not, Dubrovnik is one of those cities you just have to see for yourself. But it also makes a great start or end point for a cycling adventure. From here, you’re in the deep south of Croatia and close to many other Balkans nations, if you want to extend your trip.
- Hvar Island – Croatia’s fourth-largest island offers the perfect place for a circumnavigation by bike. The island is famous for attracting celebrities, oligarchs, and yachtsmen. It’s also a fantastic destination for cycling. If you want to ride into the centre of the island, bring your climbing legs as the roads climb steeply, passing lavender fields and olive groves. From the top you can admire breathtaking views, including the tiny Pakleni islands. You’ll also find ancient fishing villages like Stari Grad and quaint, typical villages, surrounded by stone houses, lovely cobblestone streets, and heavenly sea views.
- Korcula Island – Korcula Island is famous for being the birthplace of explorer Marco Polo. It’s stunning, with quiet villages, olive trees, holm oaks and fragrant Mediterranean pines. Korcula old town’s impressive cathedral and mini-Dubrovnik looks and marble-clad alleyways make it popular with cruise-shop day trippers. But you can try and avoid them by heading for the trails.
- Mljet Island – This attractive, rural island is full of natural beauty and doubles as a national park. Mljet National Park cloaks its western end, and scenic backroads lead inland to two unusual saltwater lakes. One even has a tiny island monastery at the centre, which is now a cafe. Make sure you have a swim, as the water is warmer here than in the open sea, and very pleasant.
- Peljesac Peninsula – The thin strip of land that is the Peljesac Peninsula makes a great ride on the way to the walled town of Dubrovnik. It nearly touches Korkula Island – in fact you can get a ferry to one end of the Peljesac Peninsula from Korkula (landing in Orebik), or approach it from Ston at the other end (see the information on its walls above and it’s known for its excellent seafood and vineyards too).
Many cyclists cycle the Dalmation Coast as a linear (or semi-linear as you might like to ride around a few of the islands) route from Dubrovnik to Split, or vice versa. The terrain for this kind of route isn’t super hard. Expect hills – including some steeper hills with 10-12% gradients – but this is not the Alps, it’s an undulating coastline, with some sea level to summit climbs.
You’ll mostly be on road with with a few gravel tracks on the islands.
Cyclists that don’t mind taking on a few hills, who want to see some of Croatia’s most famous destinations and who love to jump in the sea at the end of a day’s riding.
Island hopping cycling tour – Dalmatia with its many beautiful islands and well connected ferries is a great choice for those seeking an island-hopping holiday.
4. What’s the best time of year to visit?
Cycling season begins in March in Croatia and runs through into early November.
We think the best months for cycling in Croatia are late Spring and Autumn, so April, May, June, September and October.
We always suggest that our clients avoid July and August if they can, as there are so many visitors in Croatia and the roads can get really busy.
- Croatia does not yet have many cycle-specific paths, so cyclists tend to ride on the roads; this can be less enjoyable when there is too much tourist traffic. Given this, it’s a good idea to consider going on a cycling trip out of classic peak season in July and August to avoid heavy traffic on the road and crowds in the towns.
- It can also be really hot in July and August and, if you decide to ride in Dalmatia, you’re likely to have to queue for ferries.
In spring and autumn, the weather might be a touch less predictable, but you should still enjoy some warm weather. In spring, think about timing your trip to coincide with Croatia’s glorious wildflower season and during April and May you can try wild asparagus dishes, as it’s ready for picking at that time.
A draw of a cycling trip to Croatia in September or October is that sea temperatures are still pretty warm. For those that love wine, it’s also worth bearing in mind that grape harvest happens in September and riding with the aroma of fermenting grapes in the air is very memorable! In Istria, the truffle festival starts in mid-September, although the most important are during October and November.
A final note of caution: keep an eye on the weather forecast. The weather in Croatia is generally good, but occasionally there are strong winds, such as the mistral and the bura. More info on Croatia’s winds, here.
5. What is the food like in Croatia?
Food is a very important part of life in Croatia. This is good news for cyclists visiting Croatia!
However, don’t expect acai berries and cortados. The kind of food you’ll find in Croatia is delicious, authentic and local, with lots of fish and fresh seafood. Southern and coastal areas of Croatia have been influenced mostly by Italy, while central and northern parts have had stronger influences from Austria, Germany and Hungary. We have also adopted many excellent Turkish dishes.
Sampling the local cuisine is a big part of a self-guided cycling trip in Croatia.
6. What is the accommodation like for cyclists in Croatia?
Tourism in Croatia is still relatively new and there’s a strong push towards sustainability and slow travel. This means that you shouldn’t expect massive Mallorca-esque sports hotels with mega buffets and 50 different sports to choose from. More common are small, rural hotels and guesthouses which are high on charm but low on cycling-specific facilities.
Many are renowned for their excellent cuisine and, choose wisely, and you’ll be sure of a warm welcome to cyclists, traditional hospitality and an authentic experience.
Boutique 4- and 5-star hotels with swimming pools are available, but they’re less common so can have an impact on itineraries.
7. Anything else to consider for a self-guided cycling holiday in Croatia?
Practical preparations.
Before you go, make sure you know how to fix a puncture. On a self-guided trip, tour companies will expect you to be able to manage this yourself.
If you’re bringing your own bike, make sure it’s serviced and consider a pre-departure bike fitting so that you know you’ll be comfortable in the saddle.
Consider your level of fitness compared with the route you’re undertaking. You might also want to do a little training if you’re not used to riding multiple days of biking back-to-back. Otherwise, you might find that your holiday is less fun and more painful than you expected!
Wear proper cycling shorts and pack the right clothes and kit (include sunglasses and suntan lotion!) – if you’re on a self-guided trip there’s no option to sit out a day in the van.
Cultural sensitivities
Many rural areas in Croatia are still not overly used to visiting cycling tourists. Think twice before checking out the local church in your scanty lycra.
Remember that not all the Dalmatian islands have the best waste disposal or recycling. Consider taking litter that can’t be recycled where you are back with you from the island, so you can dispose of it in a better way.
Dalmatian islands are well connected with the mainland and between the islands. There are three ferry companies connecting the islands: Jadrolinija, TP Line and Krilo. If you plan an island hopping cycling tour, please check the ferry schedule carefully.
Also bear in mind that if there are strong winds or rough weather, some passenger ferries will not operate and you should expect longer connection times between the islands, using the car ferries. Between some islands you may find private speedboats as well.
One of the advantages of a cycling holiday with a local operator is that we take great to make sure we plan holidays on quiet roads with low traffic through small villages. However, in order to make sure you also see some of the more famous towns, it’s sometimes necessary to ride on busier roads as you approach them (for example Poreč, Umag, Rovinj). It’s also a good idea to visit outside of the busiest “general tourism” months, to reduce the amount of riding in traffic you’ll do.
Take out the appropriate travel insurance, making sure it includes cycling that you’re planning on doing. There’s more on cycling travel insurance, here.
Make sure the tour operator you’re with knows about any medical issues you have.
Make sure you take enough water. Cycling Croatia’s hills is thirsty work, whatever the weather. While you’ll ride through towns from time to time, it’s best not to rely on there being other water sources around.
Adjust your bike so it fits you at the start – and if you’re on a self-guided tour, make sure you’re comfortable before you leave as you might not have access to much expert guidance on the way. Bringing your own saddle can be a good idea for extra comfort.
Carry a basic first aid kit and remember to apply suncream!
Highway code and travel information
As ever, it’s a good idea to check current travel information before you book and travel. For UK visitors, the UK government travel information pages for Croatia are here.
You should also read and follow Croatia’s highway code.

10. What are your tips for choosing between companies offering self-guided cycling holidays in Croatia?
I think it’s helpful to bear these points in mind when choosing a tour operator in Croatia:
- Do you get a response to your enquiry within 24 hours?
- Can they customise the trip to your requirements?
- Do they offer a flexible start date?
- Is there 24/7 support on the ground?

Bike barge tour Croatia — relaxed Adriatic adventures
Cycling may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about a holiday in Croatia — you’re probably imagining picturesque beaches lapped by the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, handsome fortified towns and secluded islands accessed only by yacht…
Bike barge tours in Croatia give you the chance to explore all of this and another side of Croatia’s coastal paradises; challenging hill routes that reward you with spectacular sea views, sleepy island interiors away from the tourist hotspots, and spectacular national parks.
And taking a refreshing dip in the sea feels absolutely delicious after a day’s bike touring!
What to expect on your bike barge tour in Croatia
Croatia’s beautiful, rocky coastlines and verdant island interiors are perfect for those cyclists looking for a challenge: Each day starts with a tasty breakfast on board your motor yacht “hotel” before you and your guide depart head out bike touring through the gorgeous scenery of Southern Dalmatia, the Kvarner Bay Islands or Croatia’s renowned island national parks.
And if it sounds too demanding, don’t forget that you can make things easier with an e-bike.
Every evening you’ll make your way back to the yacht for a well-deserved swim in turquoise waters, a home-cooked meal featuring the freshest local ingredients and Croatian specialties, and a fine wine on deck as you watch the sun go down on another day of bike barge touring in Croatia.
Cycle and sail through UNESCO highlights and natural wonder
For those who would like their Bike barge tour Croatia to combine both island hopping and UNESCO-listed world heritage sites, our Dalmatian trips are perfect and come with the options to be taken as high-end PLUS tours . Marvel at sights like the regal walled city of Dubrovnik, get up and personal with Diocletian’s Palace in Split, and cycle charming routes on the sparsely-populated islands of the Adriatic Sea in between.
On the other hand, if you’d rather spend more time exploring Croatia’s reefs, bays and islands, the National Parks of Dalmatia bike barge tour offers a unique chance to do this. Enjoy easier cycling as you visit the National Park Krka waterfalls, the old town of Trogir, and the wild aquatic realm of the Kornati National Park archipelago and its attendant islands.

Additional Arrival Information
We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to start of your Croatia bike tour, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Dubrovnik (DBV) for the trip start. Arriving two to three days in advance will give you more time to recover from the effects of a long international flight. The airport is 12 miles (19 km) from the city center and can be reached by public bus, shuttle, or taxi. Buses and shuttles generally run after each international flight arrival and cost approximately 5€. A taxi ride should take approximately 25 minutes and cost between 27€ and 54€, depending upon your destination and the amount of luggage you have with you. Alternatively, our hotel in Dubrovnik will arrange transportation for you for an additional fee.
Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Hotel Kompas Dubrovnik (Ul. kardinala Stepinca 21, Dubrovnik) at 9:00 AM on the first day of your Croatia bike trip. After some brief introductions, we'll take a short shuttle out of the city. Your guides will then perform personal bike fittings. If you have brought your own pedals, make sure to have them and your cycling shoes available so the guides can properly fit the bike. After the bike fitting we'll start our ride in the Konavle Valley.
If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip starts with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hotel Kompas Dubrovnik (+385 20 299 000), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. If you arrive late to the meeting location, you can meet the group later in the day before social hour and dinner.
Additional Departure Information
You will say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at the Hvar Harbor. At this time, you will embark on a private speed boat to Split. The private boat transfer to Split will take approximately an hour and thirty minutes, and land on the Split promenade or the first nearby dock, a five-minute walk from the Main Ferry Terminal. If you would like to extend your time in Hvar, you may forego the included private boat transfer to Split and arrange a separate public ferry to Split later in the afternoon at your own expense. Your guides can assist you in selecting the ferry you need.

Following the ride, you’ll travel by boat, you will enjoy a fresh picnic and stop in small coves for a swim, before getting to Hvar, the most glamorous of the Dalmatian islands. Explore chic Hvar Town, where the 16th-century Citadel towers over the yacht-filled harbor. While today it is considered a hot vacation spot, Hvar was once a Venetian capital on the key east-west trade routes. That influence lives on in a collection of Renaissance buildings including the Citadel; the 17th century Arsenal, which housed the oldest theater in Croatia and one of the first in Europe; and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, complete with a classically Venetian campanile. Explore the main square, Pjaca, paved in marble and lined with outdoor bars and boutiques, or walk through the old town, heading up the hillside to discover understated architectural gems hidden in the narrow lanes and alleys. If you’d rather, head for the beach: It’s your vacation—you decide! Tonight, choose from the many restaurants in Hvar for your dinner. Read More
