This 13-day trail running tour is designed for runners of all abilities who want to come to Ethiopia to train in the beautiful highlands while gaining an insight into the local running culture. You will get to know places of extraordinary beauty with excellent training conditions. During the tour, the training programme can be individually adapted to your fitness level and training plans.

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa and transfer to Yaya Athletics Village in Sululta

Upon arrival, you will be met at Addis Ababa International Airport and transferred to Yaya Athletics Village in Sululta, which is approximately 1 hour drive from the airport. Depending on your arrival time, we may start a light footing to help you acclimatise.

Day 2: Training at Yaya Athletics Village and Addis Ababa City Tour

In the morning we will have our first training session at Yaya Athletics Village. In the afternoon, we will explore some of Addis Ababa’s most important cultural sites such as the National Museum, where among other things the 3.5 million year old bones of Lucy, the oldest hominid ever discovered, are on display; the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, where you can marvel at a variety of artefacts from the different regions of Ethiopia, reflecting the country’s history and culture; the Trinity Cathedral, where Emperor Haile Selassie and other members of the imperial family are buried; and finally, the Mercato, Africa’s largest open-air market.

Day 3: Training at Yaya Athletics Village and excursion to Debre Libanos

In the morning, our daily training session will take place at Yaya Athletics Village. In the afternoon we drive north through the plains of Sululta to Debre Libanos (approx. 1.5 hours drive). Debre Libanos is home to one of the most important monasteries in Ethiopia and a very interesting associated museum, where numerous ancient treasures of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church are exhibited. We also take a nice walk to the so-called “Portuguese Bridge”, from where there is a magnificent view over the impressive gorge. Some historians believe that the bridge dates back to the 16th century when the Portuguese invaded Ethiopia for a short time, others believe that it was built in the 19th century by Emperor Menelik’s uncle. After crossing the bridge, we have a view of a 60 m high waterfall. We should also encounter the endemic Gelada monkeys and a variety of bird species (especially birds of prey) here. In the late afternoon we return to our training centre in Sululta.

Day 4: Hiking in Menagesha Forest National Park.

Today we take a full-day excursion to Menagesha Forest, the nearest area of significant indigenous forest near Addis Ababa, located only about 20 km west of the capital. Menagesha comprises 25 km2 of juniper, African redwood and yellowwood trees, as well as Mount Wechecha, an extinct volcano that rises to 3,385 metres above sea level, making it the highest peak in the Addis Ababa area. We can envisage an ascent to the top. The forest can be explored along a network of trails that extend from the national park headquarters to the summit of Mount Wechecha. Wildlife in the park includes the striking Colobus monkey, the endemic Menelik bushbuck and the bold Anubis baboon, all of which are frequently seen by hikers. Menagesha is also a particularly important site for endemic forest birds. We return to Sululta in the late afternoon.

Day 5: Suluta – Zway (lunch) – Hawassa (309 km)

After our last training session in Sululta and breakfast, we will leave Yaya Village and drive south to Zway (about 3 hours), which is located in the Great Rift Valley. After lunch in Zway, we will take a boat trip on Lake Zway and explore the beautiful Bird Island. For nature lovers, Lake Zway offers a fantastic variety of water and tree bird species on its islands, on the shore and in the adjacent forests. With a little luck, we may also spot hippos. In the afternoon we continue our journey to Hawassa, the capital of the southern peoples, also nicknamed the ” City of Eternal Love”. In Hawassa we stay at the luxurious 4-star resort of the legendary Ethiopian long-distance runner Haile Gebre Selassie. The sunsets over Lake Hawassa are usually fantastic!

Day 6: Hawassa

In Hawassa, enjoy the magnificent Haile Resort, where you should want for nothing from gym, sauna, steam room, swimming pool to beauty treatments and massages. In the morning, it’s worth visiting the authentic fish market where you can watch the traditional fish trade and sample the delicious, freshly prepared catch of the day right away. It is a nice short walk from Haile Resort to the fish market along the shore of Lake Hawassa. In the afternoon we can either visit the natural hot springs at Wondo Genet, said to have healing powers for many different ailments, or visit a coffee farm at Aleta Wondo where the world famous Sidama coffee is grown.

Day 7: Hawassa – Bekoji – Adama

After breakfast, we continue our journey to Bekoji, the small rural town in central Ethiopia that has produced seven Olympic medallists: Kenenisa Bekele and his younger brother Tariku Bekele, Derartu Tulu and her cousins Ejegayehu Dibaba and Tirunesh Dibaba, Fatuma Roba, and Tiki Gelana. Bekoji runners have won a total of 16 Olympic medals – 10 of them gold – and more than 30 world championships. For comparison, runners from this tiny city have won more gold medals than the whole of India (population 1.2 billion) in all Olympic categories combined, and almost twice as many as Indonesia (population 247 million). Welcome to the city of runners. We enjoy a spectacular run on the plateau of the Arsi Mountains at about 2’800 m above sea level before continuing to Adama.

Day 8: Trip to the hot springs of Sodere

Today we will relax and enjoy the popular natural hot springs of Sodere.

Day 9: Adama – Sululta

We are back at Yaya Athletics Village for lunch. In the afternoon we visit the nearby Entoto Mountain, which offers a magnificent view over Addis Ababa.

Day 10: Trail Run in Kaliti

In the morning we enjoy a training run in Kaliti, a beautiful area on the southern outskirts of Addis Ababa at an altitude of about 1’800 m above sea level. A vehicle will accompany us. This slightly lower altitude track is a popular training route for Ethiopian professional runners.

Day 11: Boston Hill and visit to Selam Children Village

In the morning we go for a forest run to “Boston Hill” near Yaya Village, a real challenge with an altitude of 3’100 m above sea level. This is another popular training site for the Ethiopian elite runners. The name Boston Hill comes from the fact that the incline here hurts at least as much as the infamous climb on the Boston Marathon course. In the afternoon we have the opportunity to visit the “Selam Children’s Vllage”, an exemplary project in Addis Ababa that enables orphans and destitute children to improve their lives and develop holistically into independent citizens.

Day 12: Trail Run in Legatafo

In the morning we do a training run in the beautiful area of Legatafo, on the eastern outskirts of Addis Ababa at an altitude of about 2’400 m above sea level. In the afternoon, we plan to meet with a professional athlete.

Day 13: Trail Run on the Entoto / Departure

In the morning there will be a training run on the Entoto mountain, which reaches a maximum altitude of 3’200 m above sea level. A vehicle will accompany us. Free afternoon In the evening you are invited to a farewell dinner in one of Addis Ababa’s traditional restaurants, with cultural songs, dances and traditional food and drinks. You will then be transferred either to the airport for your international flight or, if you are continuing your stay in Ethiopia, to your reserved hotel.

Best Hiking Trails in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a large eastern African country boasting a stunning array of landscapes and wildlife.  Fertile, highland plateau for much of the country, and opportunities for hiking abound, particularly in Simien Mountains National Park and Bale Mountains National Park, as well as Community Trekking areas in the north of the country.  As well, hiking to see rock-hewn churches from Lalibela and hiking around Addis Ababa are well known.  Popular hikes include up to Ras Dashen, the highest peak in Ethiopia, Mount Erer, Mount Bwahit and Imet Gogo. Outstanding Wildlife Photography Tour If you take this photographic tour with Armaye I can say that it is excellent from the moment you are contacted to plan it. Armaye was always kind and willing to have a good experience according to our budget and interests. He sent me an itinerary for 9 days and we traveled with him also we have used local guides at some parts. We saw a lot of Wildlife including our main targets(Ethiopian Wolf, Walia Ibex, Gelada Baboons, Menilik’s Bushbuck, Bale Monkey and Mountain Nyala) also reaching them with some hikes. Breathtaking views in Simien Mountain park but more chance to see wildlife and endemic birds in Bale Mountains. Our pictures are amazing, a beautiful memory. Unfortunately for me it wasn’t enough time I had in Ethiopia as I would like to visit many parks and more endemic wildlife and birds so I will plan to come some other time and use Armaye Tours service.

Tigistu and the team and Tankwa did an excellent job. The local guides were generally very good and knowledgeable. We saw some amazing sites and learned so much. 5 Days Historical North

The tour was excellent! Well organized and we always felt we are in good an safe hands. Addis Ethiopia Tours did a great job curating and accomodating our needs. We had a wonderful time. I definetly have to highlight Tilahun, our guide in Lake Tana/Bahar Dir - he was marvellous. Together with his colleague and driver Hailu, they gave us such a great start into our trip. He even drove a boat and we saw Hippos! It was a fantastic welcome and he had so many explanations and insights. We drove to the beginning of the blue Nile and saw eagles and more Hippos! Actually, the whole tour was packed with highlights. Also the car ride to Gondar was so fascinating. Seeing all the villages and landscapes passing by was very entertaining and fascinatinf to see and experience. Our guide in Lalibela, also did a great job explainng us the churches and life in present day Lalibela. He even took us to the market and this was a great experience on its own. We also enjoyed some free time in the evening and wandered off on our own and the people we met on the way were fantastic, lovely and welcoming. On our last stop in Addis Abeba, we were welcomed by Luel and a driver. He showed us around his city and had so many more recommendations, that we could use for our extended stay in Addis Abeba. Tbh, I have to say, that the iitinerary in Addis Abeba was a bit too packed. Due to the Museum visit, the park and panorama isit we checked in so late and had to rush to dinner. We were so grateful, that we were invited for dinner, but we were aready overwhlemed with the whole day in the big city. Also the venue felt a bit too touristy. It was great food and the performances were stunning, but the atmosphere felt a bit unauthentic. But we were felt great, when we even received a little farewell present from you guys. Thank you so much. All the guides had big knowledge about their region and you could always feel comfortable to ask anything you wanted know. Our group was very small and it felt very private and cozy. Big credit also for the Hotel selection. All the hotels were perfect. Wifi, showers and breakfast all worked smoothly well and they were very comfortable. Big thans for choosing these particular places. We had no clue beforehands about where we are going to stay but after the first night in the first hotel we were assured that you guys planned it well. We would definetly return to Ethiopia and would book again with Addis Ethipia Tours, probably to go to the Southern region next time.
