5. Humboldt Forum

Since July 20, 2021, the Humboldt Forum has expanded the Museum Island's offerings with collections from the Ethnological Museum Berlin, the Museum of Asian Art, the non-European art collection, the Berlin Exhibition and the Humboldt Laboratory.

Built in eight years, the Humboldt Forum, seen from the outside, is a faithful replica of the Berlin Palace, which stood on the same site until 1950. The construction costs amounted to 677 million euros. This makes the Humboldt Forum the most expensive cultural building in Germany.

6. Neuer Marstall

The Neue Marstall (New Stable) was built at the end of the 19th century in the neo-baroque style. The four-story building housed 300 horses on two floors, as well as carriages and sleighs of the imperial court. A hall with historical as well as at that time still used vehicles was open to the public.

Today, the Neue Marstall is an architectural monument and houses the Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler" Berlin, the Berlin City Library and the Association for the History of Berlin.

7. Nikolai Quarter

The idyllic Nikolai Quarter is the oldest residential area of Berlin. This underrated gem of the city, consisting of narrow streets, historic buildings, picturesque houses and traditional German pubs and restaurants, is the historical founding place of the city and also known as the "old Berlin".

In the 13th century, the first merchants and craftsmen settled here on the eastern bank of the Spree, and in 1230 they built the Nikolai Church, of which you can see only the tops of its two towers. Logically, it is the oldest church in Berlin .

At the Mühlendamm lock, many tours turn around and head downstream in a westerly direction.

8. Alte Nationalgalerie

The Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Museum Island . It was built until 1876 in the style of Classicism and Neo-Renaissance and combines architectural elements of different building types from temples, palaces and theaters to churches. This was intended to illustrate the unity of nation, history and art.

The Alte Nationalgalerie displays paintings and sculptures of the 19th century on three floors, divided into the periods of Classicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and the Goethe period.

9. Pergamon Museum

Built in the neoclassical style, the Pergamon Museum was opened in 1930 as the last of the five exhibition buildings on Museum Island. It houses the Museum of the Ancient Near East with exhibits from archaeological excavations by German scientists, the Collection of Classical Antiquities with works of Greek and Roman architecture, and the Museum of Islamic Art with diverse works from the seventh to the 19th century.

Among the most famous exhibits of the Pergamon Museum are the Pergamon Altar with its masterful reliefs, which gave the museum its name, the seventeen-meter-high Market Gate of Miletus, and the magnificent Ishtar Gate from Babylon complete with a magnificent processional route.

10. Monbijou Park

The Monbijou Palace (French: "my treasure") was built at the beginning of the 18th century. After the division of Berlin, the GDR government had it demolished in 1959, against strong protests from museum circles and the public.

The palace, which served as a residence for Prussian queens, had burned to the ground during World War II. The area freed up after the demolition was used to create what is now Monbijou Park.

11. Bode Museum

Completed in 1904 in the New Baroque style, the building with the semicircular entrance wing flanked on both sides by the Monjibou Bridge is the Bode Museum. It is also part of the building ensemble of the Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Particularly striking is the nearly 40-meter-high dome with copper roofing.

The picturesque building is home to the sculpture collection, which presents one of the most extensive collections in Germany. It also houses the Museum of Byzantine Art, which displays works and everyday objects from Western Rome and the Byzantine Empire, and the Coin Cabinet, which has one of the world's largest collections of coins.

12. Monbijou Bridge

The listed Monbijou Bridge leads from the forecourt of the Bodemuseum across the two arms of the Spree. Although its history dates back to 1776, the current bridge was built in the early 20th century.

The picturesque bridge is adorned with balustrades and four columns crowned by globe lights. The material combination of granite and cast bronze harmonizes with the neo-baroque architectural style of the Bode Museum. With construction costs of almost 850,000 Reichsmark, the Monbijou Bridge was the most expensive bridge of its time.

13. Weidendammer Bridge

Weidendammer Bridge is known as the bridge of poets and singers and is one of the most famous locations for love locks.

"Do you know the Weidendammer Bridge? Do you know it in the evening, when under the dark sky all around the light advertisements shimmer?" That's a quote from Erich Kästner 's "Pünktchen und Anton," in which the heroes of the children's book sell matches and shoelaces on the bridge at night.

The German singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann sang about the bridge with the words, "See there where Friedrichstrasse ends, and curving o'er the water bends: there hangs over the Spree the Weidendammer Bridge."

The important German representative of realism, Theodor Fontane , proposed to his girlfriend on the bridge and was married. The marriage lasted 48 years until his death.

14. Palace of Tears

The check-in hall at Friedrichstraße station, built in 1962, was used for departures from East to West Berlin . This meant saying goodbye to friends and family, and many tears were shed. The place of painful separations was soon christened the Palace of Tears (Tränenpalast) in the vernacular.

The permanent exhibition "Place of German Division" documents the history and fates at the Palace of Tears through interviews, biographies and 570 original objects. Admission is free.

15. Berlin Friedrichstraße Station

Between 1961 and 1990, Friedrichstrasse Station served as one of the most important border crossing points betwee n East and West Berlin, as it was the last station in the GDR before the border to West Berlin.

For this purpose, it was transformed into a hermetically sealed fortress and was under the total control of the GDR's state security, which prevented escape attempts here, smuggled its own agents into the West and prevented "enemy forces" from entering the GDR.

16. ARD Capital Studio Berlin

The large building with the facade of brick-red precast concrete is the ARD Hauptstadtstudio Berlin, which opened at the same time as the German government moved from Bonn to Berlin in 1999.

The station's flagship in terms of political reporting comes from the large television studio A with corner window, located to the right of the blue ARD letters. Since 1999, the report from Berlin has been broadcast from there every Sunday punctually at 6:05 pm.

17. Reichstag Building/ German Bundestag

The magnificent Reichstag building, built between 1884 and 1894 in the neo-Renaissance style, is one of Berlin's most important sights and Germany's most significant landmark.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification, the Reichstag building has been the seat of the German Bundestag since 1999. You can attend a session in the plenary hall and visit the spectacular 23-meter high and 40-meter wide glass dome, from which you have a magnificent view of the surrounding area.

18. White Crosses Memorial

The number of people who died at the Berlin Wall varies. The memorial site on the banks of the Spree River in front of the Reichstag building features eight places for crosses, seven of which are occupied. The crosses are inscribed on both sides with the names of Wall victims and the corresponding dates of death. The empty space, also in the shape of a cross, is dedicated to the unknown victims of the Wall.

19. Government District

Except for the Reichstag building, Modernist architecture dominates the government district built between 1997 and 2003 on both banks of the Spree.

The core of the "political center" of the German capital is formed by the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus with the library of the German Bundestag on the northern bank and the Paul-Löbe-Haus, the Bundestag and the Federal Chancellery on the southern bank of the Spree.

The Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus is located on the former border strip between West and East Berlin. Connected to the Paul-Löbe-Haus on the opposite bank of the Spree by a footbridge called "Sprung über die Spree ", it forms an architectural unit with the latter.

20. Parliament of Trees against War and Violence

The Parliament of Trees against War and Violence was created in 1990 in the area of the former border strip on the northern bank of the Spree river.

16 prime ministers planted 16 trees in a square . They symbolize the 16 federal states and German unity. 58 authentic parts of the Wall, granite slabs with the names of 258 victims of the Wall, memorial stones, flower beds, pictures and texts complete the memorial on the banks of the Spree.

21. Berlin Central Station

The steel and glass building with the vaulted roof in the center is Berlin's new central station. It was opened in May 2006 after eleven years of construction. In the meantime, the striking building with the vaulted roof structure, which is flanked by the two 46-meter-high office buildings, has become a popular photo motif.

It is the city's most important passenger station and the largest tower station in Europe. With about 330,000 travelers and visitors daily, it is Deutsche Bahn's fourth busiest long-distance station after Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main and Munich.

22. Moltke Bridge

The listed Moltke Bridge was designed between 1886 and 1891 as a load-bearing steel structure on stone piers and faced with red sandstone. It features rich pictorial and sculptural decoration and is considered one of the most beautiful crossings of the Spree River.

23. Federal Chancellery

The Federal Chancellery ( Bundeskanzleramt ) is an agency that supports the German Chancellor in his duties. It currently employs about 600 people and has an annual budget of about 3.65 billion euros.

With a helipad and Chancellor's Park covering some 73,000 square meters, it is about eight times the size of the White House and the largest government headquarters in the world. The agency consists of seven departments, which in turn give rise to 16 sub-departments.

24. Haus der Kulturen der Welt

The Haus der Kulturen der Welt (in English: House of the World's Cultures) was founded in 1989 and is an exhibition venue for contemporary art from all over the world. Special attention is given to non-European cultures and societies.

It is located in the former Congress Hall, which was considered an icon of architectural modernism in the mid-1950s. Berliners affectionately call the building the "Pregnant Oyster" in reference to its shape.

History of the Spree River Navigation

Until the 20th century, shipping on the Spree was of immense importance for supplying the city with food as well as building and heating materials.

Today, the river is a tourist attraction and is characterized by passenger shipping.

Spree cruise Berlin

Sights on a Spree cruise from east to west

Two hours: Your boat trip leads through Berlin's wild east between Mühlendammschleuse (Fischerinsel) and the Rummelsburger Bucht. On this route you sail past notorious party locations such as the Kater Holzig, the Holzmarkt, the East Side Gallery, the Oberbaumbrücke, the Badeschiff, the Molecule Men and the Isle of Youth. Three hours : This classic Berlin city tour takes you past the Berlin Cathedral, Museum Island, Central Station, the Chancellery and the House of World Cultures. On both banks of the Spree there are many beach bars such as Capital Beach, Sage Beach and the Strandbar Mitte. This is probably the best known route of Berlin.

Four hours: Your boat trip can take you towards Lake Müggelsee and New Venice (Berlin district Rahnsdorf). It's worth planning some extra time for a swim in Lake Müggelsee on this boat tour. The route takes about 90 to 120 minutes per direction.

Where do Spree tours start in Berlin?

Suitable boats for these routes start at the Historical Port Berlin (Fischerinsel) and Oberbaum Bridge. Some boat tours also start at Caprivi Bridge (Charlottenburg) and Friedrichstraße (Mitte). If you prefer to book tickets for a large passenger ship spontaneously, contact the big passenger ship companies "Stern und Kreis" or "Reederei Riedel".

Insel der Jugend

After the war, the island was renamed as the 'Insel der Jugend' ( Island of Youth ). The island became a very popular spot for people to party on barges during the 70s. They used to have concerts on the island and many famous DDR/ GDR bands used to play for free because it was seen as such an honor to play here. In 1984, the youth club 'INSEL' took over and to this day continue the traditions of hosting small concerts, open air cinemas and much more.

In 2010, the name of the island changed to the simple 'Insel Berlin'. Our boat trip follows the Spree River towards the city center, passing Treptow Harbor on the port side and passing under the Elsen Bridge.

Molecule Men

The 'Molecule Men' are situated right behind the Elsen-bridge (going from East to West) and were built in 1999 by artist Jonathan Borofsky . They stand between the Elsen Bridge and the Hoppetosse.

The three figures of men are about 30 meters high and consist of punctured aluminium and stand facing each other. The whole piece weighs approximately 45 tons . The sculptor was fascinated how the punctured holes symbolised the power of molecules. Borofsky had already finished his first molecule-sculptures in 1977 in Los Angeles. The location and structure of the figures are highly symbolic . This very point is where the three districts, Treptow, Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, meet and so do the East and West.

Hoppetosse and Badeschiff

The name 'Hoppetosse' comes from the Swedish authour, Astrid Lindgren's books. The Hoppetossa (slang for frog or mythical ghost) was the name of Efraim Langstrumpf's boat . That's right, Pippi Langstrumpf's father. The Hoppetosse is the restaurant boat and along with the Badeschiff belong to the Arena Berlin (which will be our next sight on our boat tour through Berlin). The Badeschiff is a barge that's been turned into a swimming pool. In fact, it's the middle part of the former towing unit that's been kitted out with swimming pool equipment.

This is a very popular spot in the summer for people to enjoy the pool and sand bar. The pool is 32,50m long and 8,20m wide . Should you fancy taking a quick jump into the pool while on this boat tour, you'll quickly get to know the attentive lifeguards who are very eager to give their whistles a blast. The Badeschiff is definitely worth a closer look while on a boat tour through Berlin.

Media Spree Berlin

The term 'Media Spree' refers to the city's biggest investment project . This is the area that runs alongside the shore lines of the Spree, covering 3,7 km between Elsen-bridge in the East and the Oberbaum-bridge, Schilling-bridge, Michael-bridge, and Jannowitz-bridge in the West.

Along the River Spree, you'll find undeveloped land that was primarily used as industrial and commercial buildings from the last century. The most prominent examples are found on the Eastern Harbour and the East Side Gallery . In the future, they plan to build offices , luxury apartments.

Unfortunately, this investment project is affecting some of the city's most famous beach parties . Bar 25, for example, was probably one of the hottest and most spectacular techno clubs on Berlin's party scene. Its closure in September 2010 symbolised the ongoing restructuring process of large parts of the city. The bar was a real eye-catcher at night on any Spree River cruise.

Oberbaumbrücke

Next stop of your River Spree Cruise: The Oberbaum Bridge is located right behind the Oberschleuse (which leads into the Landwehr Canal). This is undoubtedly B erlin's most beautiful bridge , covering 150m in length and combining the two districts Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. It was built in 1894 and cost 2 million Goldmarks at the time. The building inspector Pinkenburg and the architect, Otto Stahn, oversaw this project. There's a pedestrian pathway under the railway viaduct that closely resembles a crossing from the middle ages. The middle archway is supported by two 34m high towers, which used to serve as Berlin's water gateway . The two reliefs at the top of the towers carry the Berlin bear and the Brandenburg eagle. Adolf Hitler had the bridge partially blown up in 1945 in order to stop the Russians advancing. The middle archway was completely destroyed in the process. During the post-war period, the bridge was rather poorly repaired with a steel structure, which then served as a border between the Soviet sector in the East and American sectors in western Berlin. After the reunification, the bridge was fully restored in 1995 for 70 million DM and took up its position again as a historical symbol of Berlin. The Oberbaum Bridge is an integral part of any trip on the Spree River in Berlin.

Mercedes-Benz Arena

Next stop, Mercedes-Benz Arena. Situated right behind the Oberbaum Bridge on the starboard side as you're heading up the Spree. The arena is equipped with 17,000 sitting and standing places and is Germany's second biggest multi-functional events venue . This is home to both Berlin's ice hockey team, Eisbaeren Berlin , and basketball team, Alba Berlin . Besides events of all kinds (for example, MTV European Music Award), you will also find concerts and sports events taking place here. The arena is a central part of the Media Spree projects and was the reason for many demonstrations in the past years. The large advertising display boards and entrance point meant the removal of parts of the East Side Gallery, which was not a very popular idea amongst many Berliners. Let's follow the River Spree along the East Side Gallery and we'll come across some of the beach bars on the starboard side (Oststrand, Yaam, and Spindler and Klatt port side). Right after the Schillingbruecke, you'll find the radial system and the location of the previous Bar 25.

Fischerinsel

Our Berlin boat ride will continue on to the Muehlendammschleuse directly behind the Jannowitzbruecke and left of it, you'll see the Fischerinsel. Fischerinsel (Fisherman Island) is the part of the Spree island which is located south of the Gertrauden-street . Today you'll find a lot of high riser buildings in this area. This area was not recognised as part of Berlin between 1237 and 1709. From then on, this part of the island became home for fishermen and their families. Between 1967 and 1972, all the buildings (including monuments) were torn down in order to provide space to build DDR standardised housing estates. This housing type WHH GT 18 consists of 296 flats and belongs to the biggest housing builds of the DDR. The island connects to Berlin's center through the Muehlendammbruecke in the East. Amongst those living in these buildings, were also the famous merchant Hans Kohlhase and Heinrich von Kleist who was once described as "one of the most righteous and yet most terrible men of his time".

Nikolaiviertel

The Nikolaiviertel with the late romantic basilica Nikolaikirche (church) that was built in 1200, is Berlin's oldest living quarters . You'll find it directly behind the Muehlendammschleuse and Muehlendamm Bridge on our boat trip. At that time, the two colonies, Coelln and Berlin, began to develop around the church and remained connected through the Muehlendamm. Berlin was established in 1237 due to the two colonies growing together from this point on (and in 1307, the double-city unified as Berlin-Coelln). The church was transformed to a gothic hall church in 1264 and further changes followed. In 1870, the old tower of the church (the main feature of the old city center) was reconstructed into neo-Gothic twin towers. While Berlin continued to grow, the Nikolaiviertel more or less remained the home of builders that would carry out their work down those narrow streets. The 2nd World War left this area completely destroyed from the countless number of bombings and leaving it unrecognisable. Only in 1987 was it decided to restore the old city core, demonstrating its historical significance. The result is considered controversial , as the planning and reconstruction was heavily influenced by a focus for tourism . Existing buildings were restored and new buildings had historical facades added. The reconstructions of the town houses behind the church are regarded as the original. Besides the spire, the church has been restored to its original prior to destruction. The guesthouse 'Zum Nussbaum' which famous artists, such as Heinrich Zille and Claire Waldoff, visited has been replicated at the Nikolaiplatz after being destroyed on the Fischer Insel.

Berliner Dom

The Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom) belongs to belongs to Germany's most important protestant church buildings . The church sits right beside the River Spree. It was built from 1894 to 1905 following the planning designs of Julius Raschdorff on the Spree Island, which is known today as Mitte (modeled after High Renaissance and Baroque). The church is a listed building and consists of sermon, christening and wedding chapel . Between 1536 and 1916 members of the former Prussian royal family (Hohenzollern) were buried in the crypt of the church. Today, the Dom holds church services and important political events . The main entrance is to directly on Berlin's Lustgarten. Our boat tour on Berlin's Spree continues past Museum Island where you'll see all its other numerous attractions.

Museumsinsel

Museum island lies at the northern end of the Spree island . UNESCO awarded Museumsinsel with the title of World Heritage Site in 1999 because of its unique cultural and architectural qualities . It is the center of Berlin's museum and cultural landscape and one of the world's most important museum complexes . In 1810, Friedrich Wilhelm II decided to create "a public, well-selected collection of art". 12 years later, Karl Friedrich Schinkel submitted plans for a restructuring of the Spree Island. These included not only museums, but also several bridges and the straightening of the Kupfergraben. The former was led by a commission headed by Wilhelm von Humboldt. In 1830, the Alte Museum (old museum) was built, followed by the Royal Prussian Museum in 1859, the N ational Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie) in 1876, the Kaiser Friedrich Museum ( Bode Museum ) in 1904, and the Pergamon Museum in 1930. The Pergamon houses the German Museum, a collection of antiques including the Pergamon altar, the Middle East Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art. Most of the museums were destroyed during the 2nd World War. The repairing process only started in 1999 after reunification. The River Spree cruise will now take us to Friedrichstrasse (Weidendamm Bridge).

Friedrichstraße

Friedrichstrasse is probably o ne of the most famous streets of reunited Berlin . It was named after the Elector Friedrich III of Brandenburg, who opposed the original name 'crossroads'.

He claimed, "What do you mean cross roads? A decent name it must be - that of mine".

The most prominent buildings and structures on this street include the Friedrichstadt Palace , Admiral Palace , Tear Palace , the Frank Meisler Monument for children's transport at the station, the I nternational Trading Center , Gallery Lafayette , Checkpoint Charlie , Mauermuseum , and the Landesarbeitsamt (National Labour Office). This was built in 1940 and is the perfect example of the Nazi monumental architecture .

Schiffbauerdamm

A Spree River Cruise will take you past the Schiffbauerdamm, which is located in the district of Berlin Mitte . This sight is still part of Berlin's long standing tradition, as numerous shipbuilders were located here . Of the many buildings that used to stand here, unfortunately only three can still be seen today. In 1998 the Federal Republic took ownership and these buildings are now listed .

These structures are witnesses of the extraordinary history of the federal capital and their traditions. The Kurfuersten (electors) realised their plans for shipbuilding in this place and later built countless warships at the Schiffbauerdamm. Later magnificent buildings were built around this area, including architectural features that are particularly worth seeing. Today people rent these buildings. The administration building is used by the German Bundestag , the boiler house and engine house were leased to the news agency Reuters , and the television stations RTL and N-TV are also at home in these historic buildings. The boat ride continues towards the Reichstag.

There is hardly another building in Germany that has such a history. The Reichstag is also the building where the future of the country is determined. The building is located in the Tiergarten district and was built by architect Paul Wallot (1884-1894). The neo-Renaissance style stands out today amongst all the other buildings. Until 1918, the Reichstag was the seat of the Empire , and later housed the parliament of the Weimarer Republic . In 1933, before the 2nd World War, the building was damaged by arson. It was restored in the 1960s and again rebuilt in the 1990s. Even today, the fate of the country is determined from this very place. A special feature are the artistic activities that take place in the Reichstag. Not only the famous wrapping of the Reichstag by the artist Christo is a cultural and artistic peculiarity of the building. There have also been exhibitions showing different sculptures, paintings and collages all around the building. In addition, the Reichstag is a popular tourist attraction and brings thousands of visitors each year. The River Spree Cruise continues towards the Government district.

Regierungsviertel

The Regierungsviertel (Government district) in Berlin-Tiergarten and Berlin-Mitte is a special attraction. The central point is the Reichstag building, which is home to the plenary hall of the German Bundestag . You will also find the chancellor's office , the offices of German members of parliament and various meeting rooms. Federal ministries and the Federal Council are also at home in this place, which was already serving special significance for the country in imperial times. Originally used only for the Reichstag, the reunification in 1990 brought a completely new purpose to the building which it still serves today. It was due to lack of money that no new buildings were being built, so the city invested what it had into the old historical buildings. Still standing today, these restored original buildings help paint a picture of Berlin's history . Therefore the Regierungsviertel ties in directly to the historical circumstances and serves as a reminder of the partition of Germany and the Third Reich. Our boat tour continues towards the Hauptbahnhof (Central station).

Hauptbahnhof

A special attraction is the Berlin Central Station. It is the largest tower station in Europe. 300.000 people pass through this station on a daily basis, hopping on and off the trains, making it the fourth largest passenger station in Germany . Due to its unique design, the station was awarded as 'station of the year' by the Pro-Rail Alliance in 2007. Around 70.000 square meters are available. The train station, however, is not only an interest for rail travelers. It is a great place to pass some time with its three floors of 15.000 square feet retail space. You'll find more than 80 shops, including clothing shops, wellness and healthcare companies. In addition, there are a variety of cafes which are very inviting for people to linger. Not only do the shops and retail options make this station interesting. Its architecture is a special feature made of steel and glass. A flowing design that also covers the train crossings. The design of the station was also honored with an award in 2008. Overall, the train station is a real experience and a great start for sightseeing. Our boat tour continues towards Schloss Bellevue.

Schloss Bellevue

The Bellevue Palace (Schloss Bellevue) is certainly one of the most famous places in Germany. The magnificent building now serves as the seat of the Federal President , who takes over his official duties from here. It's situated on the northern edge of the district Tiergarten and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Reichstag, the Siegessaeule (Victory Column), and the Brandenburg Gate. Built in 1786, it was the first seat of Ferdinand of Prussia. At that time, it was a summer residence and is still witness to the splendor that prevailed at that time. This early classical style building is a rarity these days and can only be found in a few buildings today. The castle was also used as a pleasure palace in the 19th century. Today, it's not only its functional use that impresses, it's also the architectural style and the large park-like garden that are remarkable features of the castle. Our boat trip goes on to the Siegessaeule (Victory Column).

Siegessäule

The Siegessaeule is a world famous monument that adorns the Tiergarten park in the middle of Berlin. Originally built as a national monument of the Unification War in the 19th century , the column still plays a major role today. Presidents, such as Barrack Obama, have held speeches in front of the column that have crossed far beyond the borders of Germany. The Siegessaeule was also the site of the Love Parade and many other great events. Around the base of the monument, you'll find a relief that depicts the reason for this building. Pictured are historical people, including the architect of the building (Heinrich Strack) , who conceived the Siegessaeule after the victory of Prussia over the German-Danish army in 1871. The war actually consisted of three wars. For every victory, a separate segment was built so that the original Siegessaeule consists of three segments. The Victoria (the figure at the top), is the crowning glory. Due to its importance, the column is part of the "Strasse der Monumente" (street of monuments) that connects different places and sights in Berlin. Hansaviertel

The Hansa Quarter is part of the Mitte district. Although it already existed in the 19th century, modern buildings now dominate most of the neighborhood. The Hansa Quarter is split by the public rail service into two distinct parts of approximately the same size. One half is heavily covered in residential development with very little commercialism. And yet, it is still an attraction for tourists. You'll find the Academy of Arts, which hosts numerous events. In addition, the Grips Theater is also a highlight. The theater first began performing pieces exclusively for children and young people. Only in 1980 did they start putting on pieces for adults.

This part of the city, however, is not only popular because of its obvious attractions. Albert Einstein visited the district's synagogue and other well-known figures, such as Rosa Luxembourg and Kurt Tucholsky found homes in the Hansa Quarter for a time being. The area is often suggested for tourists to visit for these reasons. This is where our main route along the Spree ends.

Berlin river cruise: Should you book a Spree boat tour?

Sometimes, it’s nice to feel like a tourist in the city you live in: that’s what I’ve been thinking when I booked a 1-hour Berlin river cruise . After living in Berlin for almost fifteen years, I decided to join one of the most popular activities in town. Going on a boat tour on the Spree sounded like a fun yet somewhat saturated activity. However, I really wanted to see if it deserves booking one and share my opinion with the readers of my blog.

I have a thing for boat tours and ferry rides. Every year, I travel to remote Greek islands, and whenever I visit a waterfront city, I book a tour, like the Mostraumen cruise from Bergen . But this time, it was a river: the Spree in Berlin. On a cold but sunny winter day, I rode my bike to Nikolaiviertel and embarked on a 1-hour city tour along River Spree.

So, in this article, you will read my honest opinion about the Berlin River cruise ( you can book the boat tour here ), and you’ll see my photos and a 4K video from the ride. In addition, I’ll share useful tips for your boat trip and write about similar river cruises in Berlin.

Berlin River Cruise: what to expect

It is advised to arrive at the meeting point at least fifteen minutes before departure ( see the meeting point of the boat trip I took on Google Maps ). I chose to depart from Nikolaiviertel, which is exactly opposite the Humboldt Forum and very close to the Berliner Dom, the city’s Cathedral. As I wrote earlier, it was a sunny winter day, and the stunning Cathedral looked impressive from the water level.

I pre-booked my ticket, but you can also purchase tickets on-site. Since the boat tours in Berlin are pretty popular and large groups often join them, I prefer to have a ticket in hand and step straight into the boat. Luckily, there weren’t that many people on my timeslot. However, the next boat tour was packed.

On the boat

You don’t have to print your pre-booked ticket. The QR code sent to your smartphone is enough to board straight. The personnel will scan your ticket, and you will be free to choose your desired seat. One great thing about the Berlin River cruise I booked is guaranteed seating. Although it wouldn’t be an issue to find a seat on my timeslot, these boat tours are packed during spring and summertime. Obviously, the last thing you want is to stand still the entire time.

The boat was in mint condition, so kudos to the company for making a great first impression. After having my ticket scanned, the personnel welcomed everyone on board and informed us that a bar-restaurant was operating on the boat. I found the menu quite extensive for a 1-hour boat tour on the Spree: there’s food like currywurst and a variety of drinks. I found the prices reasonable, and I ordered a drink.

There are free audio guides in English, so you can pick up your device when entering the boat. Otherwise, there’s German pre-recorded commentary throughout the cruise.

Please remember that bringing your own food or drinks to the boat is not allowed.

There are two levels on the boat

You can choose to sit inside or outside. When you enter the boat, you will see the first level, which is the interior. It consists of oblong tables and comfortable seats, and you’ll also find menu cards. On the other hand, if you’d rather be exposed to the elements and have clearer views of the city, you can move to the deck on the upper level. The chairs on the deck are plastic, but I found them comfortable for a one-hour boat ride.

I chose the latter. I wanted to be outside and see the city unfolding. However, I must point out that it was freezing cold, and being exposed to cold wind constantly means you must dress accordingly. A famous German saying claims that “there’s no bad weather, only wrong clothing,” and I believe it’s true. Since the deck is the most popular option, arriving early enough at the meeting point means that you’ll secure a seat there.

One thing to remember is that the river cruises in Berlin take place rain or shine. However, the deck might remain closed on a rainy day for security reasons. On cold days, the deck operates, but make sure to wear extra layers of clothes (more about it in my tips section).

The Berlin River Cruise itinerary

The Berlin River Cruise I chose would travel from Humboldt Forum to the iconic Haus der Kulturen der Welt or House of World Cultures. However, you should expect slight alterations to the boat tour itinerary for various reasons. For example, the day I took the tour, it didn’t visit the Haus der Kulturen Welt; instead, it took a right turn on Berlin’s Main Train Station and traveled toward Nordhafen. One potential reason could be traffic on the river since the Spree is used to transport goods.

The cruise covers a distance of approximately 4 kilometers, and there are a handful of things to see along the way.

The Berlin Cathedral

If you start from Nikolaiviertel , you’ll first see the Berliner Dom. The iconic Cathedral is the biggest protestant church in Germany, and you will admire it from the water level. On the opposite side, you’ll also see the DDR Museum , which presents life in former East Germany. It’s a great thing to do in Berlin before or after your cruise.

The Museum Island

The Berlin River Cruise will then travel past the famous Museum Island . That’s a complex of five iconic Berlin Museums, and the one on your left is the Bode Museum. The Museum Island is a Unesco World Heritage Site, and if you have a genuine interest in history and art, it’s a must-do on your trip to Berlin. The Berlin Welcome Card grants you free access to all five museums, so consider purchasing it if you plan to visit them.

Friedrichstrasse

The boat trip will continue toward Friedrichstrasse, one of the busiest junctions in town. Attached to it is the Palace of Tears, a place of separation during Berlin’s Wall years. I wrote a separate article about the famous Tränenpalast here , which you can access for free.

The Government Quarter

The Regierungsviertel or Government Quarter is a must for architecture lovers. Apart from the Reichstag with its famous glass dome, this newly built district showcases some impressive buildings.

For example, you probably have seen the Marie Elisabeth Lüders House on Instagram, which features a gigantic circular window. Cement, glass, and vast open space will definitely create an impression.

The Hauptbahnhof

Next on your Berlin River Cruise will be the Hauptbahnhof . That’s the city’s main train station, the biggest in Germany. That’s an equally impressive structure located on the edge of the Government district. On your right hand, you’ll also see the Futurium, dealing with future cities and the planet’s natural resources.

The Haus der Kulturen der Welt (or Nordhafen)

Usually, the tour will continue to the beautiful Haus der Kulturen Welt, which Berliners call “pregnant oyster” due to its shape. However, the day I took the cruise, the boat continued toward Nordhafen.

The way back to your starting point

After reaching the final point of your Berlin cruise, the boat will turn and drive back to your starting point. This way, you can see all the landmarks one more time—and since you’ll head toward Alexanderplatz, the TV Tower will be omnipresent on the horizon.

Should you book a Berlin River Cruise?

So, after writing down the boat tour itinerary, the famous sights, and what to expect from it, it’s time to write my opinion about it.

Yes , it absolutely deserves going on a 1-hour boat tour on River Spree when you visit Berlin. Seeing landmarks from the water level and enjoying a different perspective are enough reasons to embark on a boat tour. Moreover, I believe that 20-25 euros (depending on the cruise) is a fair cost for an activity like this. You won’t be forced to buy food or drinks on board, and you can simply enjoy your boat trip around Berlin.

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience for one more reason: the boat was clean, tidy, and spacious enough to accommodate everyone. Moreover, the personnel was professional, which is always a big plus in tourist activities.

Even for me, who calls Berlin home, it was a fun activity, and I definitely recommend it to my readers. It’s a unique thing to do in Berlin, and the cost is fair.

Berlin River Cruise tips

In the final section of this article about River Spree cruises in Berlin, I’ll add 3 tips to make your boat tour more enjoyable.

• Dress for the weather . It doesn’t matter if you take the cruise in winter or summer. Make sure to bring something extra for the boat tour. Even during the summer, you might feel a cool breeze -Berlin is a windy city. On the other hand, dress warm and in layers if you take the trip in the winter. And if you feel really cold, spend at least part of the tour in the interior.
• Arrive on time . Arriving on time doesn’t just mean that you won’t lose the cruise. It also means you’ll be able to find the seat you want -indoors or on the deck. You can’t pre-book a specific seat, so an early arrival will make this possible if you want to have a window seat inside or a seat next to the water on the deck.
• Get the free audio guide . If you don’t speak German and your river cruise offers an audio guide, grab one. I found the information very useful, and you’ll get extra insights about what you see.

A boat tour on River Spree in Berlin: Conclusion

Embarking on a Spree River cruise is a sweet, laid-back way of sightseeing and exploring Berlin. Apart from discovering the city from a different perspective, I found the boat tour enjoyable due to the endless views from Berlin’s canals. Seated on the deck and exposed to the cold wind on a sunny day, it felt wonderful after a long winter. Moreover, through the commentary, I had the opportunity to learn new things about the historic city.

The tour’s cost is reasonable, and there’s value in what you get for approximately 20 euros. The one-hour Berlin River Cruise exceeded my expectations and, despite sounding rather touristic, turned out to be fun. Book one, and enjoy an easy-going activity in one of the most fascinating European capitals.
