Best Traditional Croissants and Patisserie in Paris in 2024

Sean Finelli Last Updated: October 29, 2023

As you first enter Paris, whether by taxi, uber or RoissyBus, you’re going to be surrounded by patisseries and boulangeries. That’s because there are 30,000 of them in Paris alone, averaging one every 200 meters. In both places, you can witness French people dart out with large bags and colorful boxes filled with desserts.  So, what’s the difference between the two?

Tips and Structured Options

Does the idea of sipping French coffee by the Seine send you into a magical daze?  Noshing on French cuisine will most definitely elicit the same response on your trip to Paris. Bookmark our ultimate guide where to eat in Paris post for later!

If you would prefer us to do the heavy lifting, we got you covered. Check our Le Marais Paris Food Tour to experience the best food in the city.

What is the Difference Between a Patisserie and a Boulangerie?

boulangeries in paris

Patisseries sell pastries: croissants, eclairs, pain au chocolat, fruit tarts, apple turnovers, caramels, etc. Really anything pastry.

Boulangeries are bakeries, but they also sell pastries. They specialize in bread and baguettes, but they generally offer other tasty treats too.

In fact, many are “boulangerie-patisseries.” In summary, boulangeries and boulangerie-patisseries sell bread and patisseries just sell pastries.

The Best Patisseries in Paris

Croissants were invented around the 13th century but became popular in Paris when an Austrian soldier opened the first “Boulangerie Viennoise” on 92 rue de Richelieu.  At that time, Austrian desserts were the rage and in fact “Patisseries Viennoises” are very common in Paris today.

Back then, croissants were called “kipferl” but later renamed because of its crescent moon shape.   Today, croissants are made with flour and butter, but not just any butter.

Special butter mixed with crème fraîche, which is used in all pastries. Some say this is the reason French pastries are the best. Others say it’s the water.

While in France, you can taste some of the greatest croissants at Poilâne.  They make many other desserts, but at their best, their croissants are flaky and crunchy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside.

Their pain au chocolat is equally mesmerizing.  You might as well buy one of each.  The fact that this boulangerie-patisserie is so popular means they frequently make fresh new batches.  If you happen to walk into Poilâne and see croissant on racks, you’ve hit the jackpot.

Poilâne is also very famous for their shortbread cookies and their apple turnovers, which are called chausson pommes , meaning apple slippers.  These beauties are made from fresh apples, cinnamon, eggs and of course the special type of butter.

Legend has it that this vastly popular pastry was invented in the 17th century in St. Calais, which was suffering from starvation.  Chatelaine, the lady of the town, donated many apples and flour to the poor and they treated themselves to this chausson pomme .

Du Pain et des Idées

pain aux raisins in paris

Du Pain et des Idées is one of the best boulangerie-patisseries in Paris.  Standing in a crowded line with eager and anxious people is a small price to pay for walking out with a bag of desserts and eating it while you sit beside the illustrious Canal St. Martin, just one block away.

They are famous for their escargot pistache , which is a variation on the spiral-shaped pain aux raisins , another local Parisian pastry derived from the Viennese.  The escargot does not have raisins in it, but instead pistachios or fruit in season.

If they happen to be in season, you don’t want to leave without a tarte abricot , which are only available a few months a year.

If you don’t have a sweet tooth, you will notice the pain au lardon which means bread with bacon.  The lardon is the French version of bacon, cut into small thick chunks.

Inside a blanket of French bread, they are sumptuous. You will have the choice of lardon with walnuts ( noix ), goat cheese ( chevre ), spinach (é pinard ) and prune.  The average American can easily eat one of each for lunch.

How to Order at Patisseries in Paris

Pro Tip:  Point & smile. Pronunciation can be difficult and every word in French has a gender, which makes grammar and pronunciation even more complicated. A great smile goes a long way.

It’s helpful to know that if a word has an “e” at the end, like tarte , it’s generally feminine and preceded by une , pronounced “oon,” and if it doesn’t, like croissant , it’s preceded by un , which is pronounced like “ah-n.”

You can avoid worrying about any of this by just ordering a number of pastries instead. Trust us, you’ll be able to say “quattre pain au chocolat” without a problem. It sounds like “Caht pan aw choco-lat”.

Again, point and smile ( ;

Important Terms

Je voudrais : Pronounced “shuh voo-dray,” this means “I would like…” which you can then follow with your pastry order.

S’il vous plaît: Pronounced “see voo play,” this means “please” in French.

Une tradition: If you hear someone ask for “oon tra-dih-see-own,” you should do the same. This is similar to a baguette but made with better ingredients and more care. A baguette will be cheaper but une tradition will be much more delicious.

One final tip: avoid calling a chocolate croissant c roissant chocolat . It might be one of the most offensive things you can say to a French baker. They’re called pain au chocolat which means chocolate bread.

If you want some coffee to go with your pastries, check out a cafe and order like a local using our guide on how to order coffee in Paris .

Usually the patisserie don’t have a place to sit with coffee, so is it OK to bring your pastry into a coffee shop?

Hi Loretta! Every shop is different, but as long as you’re actually purchasing something in the coffee shop you’re sitting in, you should be ok.

10 Best Boulangeries in Paris

10 Best Boulangeries in Paris

If the city of Paris were to have an official pain it would definitely be the baguette, but just because this iconic bread is part of most Parisians’ daily routine, it doesn’t mean that the capital is lacking in options when it comes to excellent, freshly baked bread. Recent baking trends have resulted in a wide variety of bread in Paris, including slow-rise, gluten free, and hearty breads inspired by what is eaten in the countryside in France. Here are a few bakeries to visit if you’re interested in discovering the best bread Paris has to offer.

Du Pain et des Idées

Famous for their Pain des Amis , a slow rise loaf of bread that is left to ferment for two days before baking. This all-organic bakery in the charming Canal St. Martin neighborhood has been open since 1870. The lovely interior which has been left unchanged, is worth an ogle on its own.

Du Pain et Des Idées

Du Pain et Des Idées

Order a freshly baked miches at this world reknown bakery and you won’t be disappointed. Made with stone ground flour and fresh sea salt from Brittany, these sourdough loaves attract tourists from near and far.

8 rue du Cherche-Midi,  75006. Tel +33 (0) 1 45 48 42 59. Open  f rom Monday to Saturday, 7:15 am to 8:15 pm. See the website for other boutique locations.

Boulangerie Chambelland

While you wouldn’t know from the looks of it, this bakery specializes in gluten-free baked goods. The tartes, bread, and delicious chouquettes don’t advertise their gluten-freeness, either- they taste like the real thing! Using rice flour made from the southern France specialty riz de Camargue, baker Thomas Chambelland produces exceptional pastries and breads in his charming boutique.

14 Rue Ternaux, 75011. Tel: +33 (0)1 43 55 07 30. Open Tuesday- Sunday from 9 am – 8 pm.

Chambelland

Thierry Breton

If you’ve been to Paris before, you’ve probably enjoyed Thierry Breton’s bread without even knowing it. The baker supplies over 80 restaurants in the city (all deliveries are done by bike) including his own restaurants: La Pointe du Grouin, Chez Casimir, and Chez Michel. While you can’t visit his bakery, you can buy bread directly from La Pointe du Grouin (8 rue de Belzunce, 10th) and a handful of other addresses around the city.

Fabrice Le Bourdat, former pastry chef at Le Bristol makes some of the city’s best madeleines at his 12th arrondissement bakery. Go for the madeleines but pick up a loaf of bread while you’re there- the bread is delicious and underappreciated. Seasonal treats, such as Galettes des Rois in January and Easter goodies in the spring, maket this bakery a delightful spot to stop and indulge.

 7 Rue Antoine Vollon, 75012. Tel: +33 (0)1 43 40 77 73. Closed Mondays.

Baker Djibril Bodian at the Grenier à Pain les Abbesses won the prize for the best baguette in Paris

Baker Djibril Bodian at the Grenier à Pain les Abbesses won the prize for the best baguette in Paris

Le Grenier à Pain

Winner of the 2015 “Best Baguette in Paris” prize this neighborhood bakery, which also won the coveted commendation in 2010, is the offical baguette supplier to the French president. Located in the 18th arrondissement the bakery is in good company, with Montmartre area bakeries winning the prize five times in the past ten years.

Boulangerie Véronique Mauclerc

This dedicated baker and her tireless team are meticulous when it comes to bread making. Each loaf is allowed two rising phases, one which lasts 1 1/2 hours and a second that lasts overnight. The result is light, fluffy, aromatique bread that does its home country proud.

83 Rue de Crimée, 75019. Tel: +33 (0)1 42 40 64 55. Closed Mondays.

Eric Kayser

Eric Kayser

Kayser’s baguettes are ranked among the greatest in Paris and, with multiple locations around the city, they are fairly easy to get your hands on. The madeleines and other pastries are also favorites among bakers and foodies in the city. Check the website ( www.maison-kayser.com ) for all the bakery locations around Paris– in almost every arrondissement.

Délices du Palais

Another “best baguette” prize winner, this traditional French bakery doesn’t disappoint. Baker Antonio Teixeira welcomes long lines of customers at his boulangerie in the 14th arrondissement, where you will get your fill of people watching while waiting to get your fill of fresh baked bread.

60 Boulevard Brune, 75014. Tel: +33 (0)1 45 39 48 68. Closed Wednesdays.

Maison Landemaine

Breads of all shapes and sizes are on offer at this bakery, which has eight locations across town ( check the website for all the boutique locations: 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 18th arrondissements). Pick up a loaf of fig and walnut bread for a perfect breakfast tartine or grab a large round of pain de campagne , which keeps well and can be enjoyed for lunches and picnics throughout your stay in Paris.

This baking class/tour was fantastic!!! My husband and boys absolutely loved it! We made baguettes, croissants and madeleines. We got to eat and take home all the goodies. Mourad, the gentleman that gave the tour was so kind and wonderful with our boys! We learned so much about French baking and boulangeries. This was a great morning!

My family of four took this wonderful tour with Igor as the guide in June 2023. We were joined by a separate family of 3. After the delicious breakfast of pastries and hot chocolate in the shop (included with the price), we began the tour of the actual working bakery. Igor kept every person engaged (all adults and our 14 year old, 11 year old) with hands-on making of many products (baguettes, braided loaves, croissants, financiers, bolle, etc.) which we were able to take home at the end. I highly recommend this tour: we learned about the inner workings and saw how a real Parisian bakery operates, and made a variety of items ourselves, all in 2 hours. Igor spoke perfect English and was very friendly/entertaining. Since this a family-owned small working bakery, you will walk in narrow halls/stairwells to get to the different prep areas. At the end, Igor told us which local shops sell cheese/butter so we had a delightful picnic in front of the Eiffel Tower with a variety of bread we had freshly baked ourselves that day!

Fabulous French baguettes Igor was a fantastic tour guide who had lots of interesting info about the bakery. The bread made was amazing. Viator review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience Feb 21, 2023

Great Experience in Paris with Mourad at Miss Manon Bakery The kids wanted to experience Paris by baking baguettes and other French pastries. This was easy to book and easy to find. We arrived 10 minutes late because of the traffic and were worried. But we were greeted with coffees, freshly baked croissants as we waited for the rest of the group. Mourad was the best guide and made the experience educational and fun! He taught us how to make financiers, roll croissants and make baguettes all from scratch. Would highly recommend this experience with Mourad at Miss Manon Bakery! Hannah Tripadvisor review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience: Feb 21, 2023

Very well run hands on baking session suitable for all ages includes pastry breakfast and take home baking I would recommend this tour for adults as well as families with children. We went with children aged 9 and 5. The session started with hot drinks and pastries. It was very hands on with the kids making baguettes, croissants and little friand like cakes. We go to to take home everything that we made except the croissants because they could not be cooked in time. The kids had a great time and the bakers were very accomodating to having their work interrupted by us. It was very informative to see a commercial kitchen in action. Maria Viator review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience Jan 13, 2023 Trip advisor review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience

Excellent choice for families We loved this activity! They welcome you with a drink, a snack, and a great attitude! The energy of the tour guide was amazing, he answered all questions and was incredibly kind and patient with everyone. We really enjoyed the tour, the baking, and in general the excellent vibe and mood of this activity. Maria_B Jan 13, 2023 Viator review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience

Fun for kids, hands on -come hungry! What fun! The children had a great time getting their hands into the dough and seeing the mechanics of how we get all those lovely French pastries and breads! Anna_H Jan 5, 2023 Viator review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience

The tour was good fun and hands on yet be aware it is only a little over an hour in the bakery.

Reviewed on: 9-Mar-2019 Booking: GYG66249756 Comment: Fast paced, information dense, learned a lot in a short amount of time. My 11 year old was engaged and busy. In under 2 hours she participated in baking pan chocolat, muffins, baguette, bolle, and croissant. No promises that everyone will be able to do the same, because every day is different.

Thank you so much for this wonderful activity we shared with my family, it was the highlight of our trip, my kids loved it. Our guide Igor was very informative and funny.

Thank you! Melissa

Emily in Paris Filming Locations: Discover the real-life Parisian settings of the popular Netflix series ‘Emily in Paris’.

Follow Emily footsteps and discover Paris. In this guide I take you on a journey through charming streets, cozy cafés, and iconic landmarks that frame Emily’s adventures in the City of Lights.

But to be honest with you, I wasn’t too interested in watching “Emily in Paris” in the first place.

Influenced by French reviews that declared the new Netflix show as being ridiculous, and obviously called out the number of clichés and the general lack of authenticity, I was skeptical.

Everything you need to know to find the Emily in Paris locations

I won’t deny that some elements in “Emily in Paris” are really more cliché than reality. However, some others are surprisingly spot-on with the accuracy of a very good caricature. Understandable that not everyone finds that flattering though.

If you want to see a french reaction to Emily in Paris – click here

Attention: The following text contains a lot of Spoilers

What is authentic in “Emily in Paris”?

#1 You can’t get just fired from your job

It certainly is a concept that Emily wasn’t familiar with… However, assuming she was employed in France and not by the US headquarter, she in fact can’t be just fired. The employer needs to be able to provide a valid reason to initiate the process and of course respect the notice period, which can be up to 3 months – and with full salary.

#2 Luc, kinda 😀

I believe he is my favorite character in “Emily in Paris”, and he is so funnily spot on. Well, of course, a tad exaggerated and a bit of a caricature, but I actually do know quite a lot of French that aren’t that different.

I always found the French a wee bit up-tied, but he made me aware that they’re actually balancing it with second-degree jokes that are very often shockingly inappropriate. I love it 🙂

#3 And the little things

  • Wine at noon? Yes, it can be a thing sometimes
  • Raw meet. Yes!
  • Pain au Chocolat is really that good
  • There is indeed no way to reserve a table for the same evening in any Michelin Star restaurant. Or any restaurant that is popular and/or good.
  • Many apartment buildings have no elevator. That’s why apartments on the upper floors are usually cheaper
  • plumbing is a problem, as is electricity
  • stepping in merde – happens
  • sending food back to the kitchen is not well seen, to say at least. Don’t ever do this

Michelin Star Retaurant

And what isn`t?

#1 Emily’s Apartment

The rental agent calls her apartment a “C hambre de Bonne” , an apartment that was occupied by servants and housekeepers in earlier days. However, those rooms are usually around 10m 2 /100ft 2 , often with shared toilets in the hallway. Hence,  Emily’s apartment is certainly not a “ Chambre de Bonne”.

Speaking from my own experience – I lived on less than 100ft 2  for 3 months. With a shared squat toilet and no water. Don’t even ask. But yeah, Emily’s apartment is definitely not a “ chambre de bonne”.

#2 All the smoking!

Seriously, what’s up with that in “Emily in Paris”? There is no way that anyone would be allowed to smoke or vape inside an office building! It’s illegal. I was as shocked as you when Paul lit up his cigarette.

However, smoking in outside areas of restaurants and bars is allowed and people enjoy it.

#3 Everyone speaks stellar English

That is clearly not a thing. Of course, it makes the whole international movie thing easier, but don’t expect this to be a reality. Most people barely speak a word.

#4 …and the little things

  • You can’t buy a bouquet of a dozen beautiful roses in the center of Paris for €5.60, probably nowhere in Paris. Or even in France.
  • Paris is not that clean, not even in the fancy center
  • And why is the father of Camille naked by the pool?
  • You don’t squeeze 3 people in the front row of your tiny 2 seat car – seat belts and street safety are a thing here as well and if you were driving like this for 2 hours, you can be sure to be stopped by the Police.
  • Maybe that’s just me being peaky, but she says she’s not taking the Metro… how on earth is she getting to work? The distance between her apartment and the office is too big to walk every day, especially in heels.

The “Emily in Paris” Locations Guide

If you fell in love with Emily and her Paris adventures, you’ll be pleased to learn that all filming locations are actually real locations in Paris that you can visit. And I found the Emily in Paris locations for you!

Here we go, all original Emily in Paris spots:

The “Emily in Paris” Apartment

Emily lives in a very authentic Parisian flat with low windows, wooden floorboards, and a truly wonderful view. It’s located on a cute little square within the Latin Quarter, next to the Panthéon. (It’s just not a “Chambre de Bonne” as explained above)

Fun Fact: When Emily gets dumped by her American boyfriend in Episode 2, you see the Panthéon in the background.

Address: 1 Place de l’Estrapade

Emily in Paris - Filming location of her appartment and a must if you are looking for emily in paris places to visit. it is just across the street from the restaurant emily in paris meets Gabriel

“Les Deux Compère” – Gabriel’s Restaurant

In the series, Gabriel’s Restaurant is just down the street from Emily’s Apartment and while often filming locations are completely fictional, it’s not the case for “Emily in Paris”. In reality, “Les Deux Compère” is an Italian restaurant called “Terra Nerra” and is located just next to the filming location of Emily’s flat.

Address: 18 Rue des Fossés Saint-Jacques

emily in paris restaurant location - the emily in paris restaurant is just in front of the emily in paris emily in paris cafe de la Nouvelle Mairie

Boulangerie Moderne

You’ll be happy to learn that you can do just like Emily and enjoy a yummy pain au chocolat from La Boulangerie Moderne. They chose a real Parisian bakery as the filming location that is – as in the series – located just next to Gabriel’s Restaurant and makes Emily in Paris places to visit easy.

Address: 16 Rue des Fossés Saint-Jacques

Filming Locations Emily in Paris - boulangerie moderne emily in paris - the Emily in Paris Boulangerie

The Emily in Paris café – “Café de la Nouvelle Mairie”

This Café is right across the street from “Les Deux Compère” on Place de l’Estrapade, in Emily’s Neighborhood. Mindy and Emily are meeting here for breakfast in Episode 5 and you see it often in the background throughout the show.

Address: 19 Rue des Fossés Saint-Jacques

Marketing Agency Savoir

Step in Emily’s shoes and head over to 6 Place de Valois, the original filming location of Savoir, Emily’s workplace. I honestly doubt that it served as well as the location of the interior scenes, but it surely was the exterior set.  The location is in reality as fancy as on the show – it’s right in the center of Paris, in the 1st arrondissement. Just a stone throw away from the Louvre and the beautiful Palais Royal!

Address: 6 Place de Valois

Emily's Workplace - Savoir, next to the Palais Royal , the emily in paris office location, Savoir Emily in Paris

Le Jardin du Palais Royal

As the Palais Royal is just a few meters away from her office at Savoir, it’s not surprising that Emily chose this garden as her lunch spot. It’s also the place where she meets Mindy for the first time in Episode 1.

Address: 8 Rue de Montpensier

Palais Royal - Emily in Paris

Café de Flore

Do you remember when she meets Thomas? The philosophy teacher? Or with Gabriel’s words “the Snob”? To be honest with you, there are quite some guys like Thomas in Paris. Anyway, they meet at Café de Flore, in Saint-Germain-de-Prés. The iconic café became famous in the ’30s when Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir made it their hang-out place. But you probably know that already!

Address: 172 boulevard Saint-Germain

Buren Columns

This isn’t an obvious place and you maybe didn’t even notice it, but the Buren Columns are quickly shown in a series of pictures that are showing Emily and Mindy after their dinner at the Maison Rose.

Address: 2 Rue de Montpensier

BUren Columns Emily in Paris Guide

Maison Rose

The “Maison Rose” in Montmartre is one of the few locations in “Emily in Paris” that is not in the center of Paris or near her apartment in the 5th arrondissement. Emily and Mindy are having dinner in this beautiful location, right next to the Sacre Coeur.

Address: 2 Rue de l’Abreuvoir

Maison Rose - one of the filming locations of Emily in Paris - emily in paris montmartre. Don't miss it if you are looking for emily in paris locations restaurants

Rue de l’Abreuvoir

The second filming location that features Montmartre is Rue de l’Abreuvoir . It’s known to be the prettiest street in Paris, hence not surprising that Emily picks it as the location for the campaign where she sets up the bed!  I

But you can also see this famous street as well in Episode 5 when Emily and Mindy walk through Paris after having dinner at the Maison Rose.

If you consider picking beautiful Montmartre as your hotel location, don’t miss our Montmartre Hotel guide!

The new Netflix show Emily in Paris - one of the locations and a famous one if you are looking for the emily in paris street with bed

Pont Alexandre III

It’s believed to be the most beautiful bridge in Paris. Covered in golden ornaments, statues of winged horses, and Art Nouveau Lamps, it has some of the most amazing views of Paris. It’s also the chosen film location of the controversial perfume commercial. Do you remember the naked lady? That’s the one. Sexy or Sexist, Episode 3

Café de l’Homme

The launch party for the said perfume takes place in the Café de l’homme – a rooftop brasserie in the Trocadero – with really the best view of the Eiffel Tower.

Address: 17 Place du Trocadéro et du 11 Novembre

Le Flore En L’ile

In Episode 1, Emily spends the evening on her own in a Restaurant by the Seine. Luc passes by on an electric scooter (which is a fun detail as those are very common in Paris due to the many strikes and of course Covid-19). However, the traditional restaurant is located on the Île-Saint-Louis and is famous for selling ice cream from Berthillon – supposedly the best in Paris!

Address: 42 Quai d’Orléans

Le Flore En L'ile - where she meets Luc, cafe emily in paris

Opéra Garnier

Swan Lake wasn’t up to Thomas’ standards (Gabriel was right calling him a snob, wasn’t he?!) but the Ballet is only one reason to visit the Opéra! The Palais Garnier building is beautiful and if you are following Emily’s footprints or not – don’t miss it 🙂 Check here for more information and schedules.

Address: Place de l’Opéra

Seine Cruise Private Tour

I am not sure you can find a captain as attractive as Mathieu Cadault, but you totally can reconstruct this Emily experience and take a private tour on the Seine . If this is out of your budget, I have good news: you might have noticed the big ships that are cruising on the Seine and that you can spot whenever Emily stands on one of Paris many bridges. They are called Bateaux Mouches and are a pretty affordable alternative to a private captain. For bookings and more information click here.

A Seine River cruise at the Pont Alexandre III

L’Atelier des Lumières

That awkward moment when Camille convinces Emily to go out with her and Gabriel. Would you have gone? However, luckily they are heading to the Atelier des Lumières , it’s a beautiful and distracting immersive installation – and it’s dark, that covered surely some tension!

However, if you plan to visit – It is usually booked out weeks ahead, so be quick! Click here for more info and bookings.

Address: 38 Rue Saint-Mau r

Atelier des Lumières

Canal Saint-Martin

In episode 6 “Ringarde”, better known as “basic bitch”, Emily and Thomas happen to have a double date with Camille and Gabriel. However, while the date isn’t going that well, you get to know a new area of Paris – the Canal Saint-Martin. It’s a hip area in the north of the Marais with loads of bars and restaurants. The place they are dining at is the Crêperie Lulu la Nantaise .

Château Lalisse in the Champagne Region

Emily gets invited to spend a weekend in Camille’s family’s castle in Episode 8, which is supposedly located in the Champagne region. But while the scenery does indeed look like the Champagne, the filming took place at Château de Sonnay in the Loire region. The site is however closed at the moment.

In case you wondered: when Emily takes a bike ride to join the Champagne tour, she passes by a bridge. It’s located in Chinon and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

I had gone in trying to figure out how to fold and roll out the croissants and not much information was passed along- just that he used a pasta maker machine. Absolute waste of money and would NOT reccomend. 2 others in the "class" agreed they though we were going to get hands on. Scoring a baguette does not count. Neither does beating a ball of dough once. Read more Written January 24, 2024
