For romance, book a four-poster room with underfloor heating before heading outside into the hot tub under the stars. Make friends at the communal breakfast table, marvel at views of Snowdonia’s mountains and, if you’re feeling energetic, tackle the majestic Glyder Ridge. Popular points of interest nearby include Victoria Gardens, Brighton Dome and Churchill Square Shopping Centre. The Brighton Centre is 1.3 km away and i360 Observation Tower is 1.7 km from the guest house. The owner was more than helping and friendly. We were personally welcomed and after asking we were given beautiful recommendations for special shops and cafes. The room was absolutely lovely, we were stunned by the view and the location! If we come back to brighton we will most definitely book the Blue Sky Guest House again! Thank you for the lovely stay!

The Stork Hotel 3 stars

Set in Lancaster, 7.4 km from Trough of Bowland, The Stork Hotel offers accommodation with a restaurant, free private parking and a bar. This 3-star inn offers free WiFi. The inn features family rooms. At the inn, all rooms are equipped with a wardrobe, a flat-screen TV, a private bathroom , bed linen and towels. The property has been sympathetically renovated after a fire in 2020. it still has a wonderful pub ‘feel’ but the rooms are tasteful and (without exaggerating) one of the cleanest I’ve ever stayed in. I could not see a cobweb or mark anywhere. The staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The room was wonderfully appointed for the price with a nespresso machine and a great range of tea and coffee. Again, I’ve stayed in more expensive properties that don’t have this.

Dukes Bath 5 stars

Bath City Centre, Bath

Set in the centre of Bath, 700 metres from Bath Abbey, the historic Dukes Bath offers accommodation with free WiFi and a garden. This 5-star guest house offers full-day security and a concierge service. Private parking can be arranged at an extra charge. At the guest house, units come with a wardrobe, a flat-screen TV, a private bathroom , bed linen and towels. Guests can have wine or champagne and chocolates or cookies delivered to their room. Service was impeccable - replied all messages with enthusiasm, clear from the on start that there was no lifts but constant offers to help with luggages which provided a lot of assurance before we even arrived. Took into account our correspondence that we needed an extra bed, and that our elderly might not be good with stairs - accommodated them on a lower floor and upgraded another room to accommodate the extra bed so we would all be comfortable. The room also had a lovely view. I love hotels who actually listen and who really wanted their guests to feel comfortable and Dukes Bath definitely made us feel that way. Helped with luggages even when we arrived late. Breakfast was also good and the staff constantly checked in to ensure we were comfortable and all our needs were taken into account. The croissants and cheese platter were so good! Gave little sweets and chocolates when we checkout or at breakfast - all the little touches where we can truly feel the hospitality.

Set in Salisbury, 1.5 km from Salisbury Cathedral and 3.2 km from Old Sarum, Caboose offers accommodation with free WiFi, air conditioning, a bar and a garden. The bed and breakfast offers a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with a hairdryer, free toiletries and shower. Excellent breakfast. Very helpful staff. Very warm rooms. Clean and aesthetic

Boasting a garden and a restaurant, Castle Inn is situated in Lydford. Guests can have a drink at the bar. All rooms in the inn are fitted with a flat-screen TV. All rooms include a private bathroom with free toiletries. Really happy with accommodation. Evening meal was amazing and the breakfast was very nice and filling.

There’s something of an art to making your home feel like home to everyone that walks in the door. The decor helps, be it cosy or cultured; and the kettle boiling on the stove. Then, of course, there’s the greeting – and where could possibly do it better than the land of 100,000 welcomes?

The people of Ireland love to open their doors to visitors. So, whether your taste is more country pile, such as Larchmount House in County Londonderry ; a traditional thatched cottage such as The Thatched Cottage B&B in County Galway; an award-winning townhouse such as the Merchant's House in Derry~Londonderry; or one of the beach-front retreats from At The Beach Rooms , there’s a warm bed and a hot cup of tea here waiting for you.

B&Bs around the island of Ireland

L-R: The Merchant's House, Derry~Londonderry; Rosehill House, County Tyrone; Number 31 Guesthouse, Dublin; At The Beach, Portstewart, County Londonderry

The beauty of a B&B or guesthouse is that one can pop up anywhere. So, no matter how rural or central a holiday you’re planning, you’re guaranteed to find one in the right spot.

For rural retreats, it’s hard to beat somewhere like Coolanowle House , set on an organic farm in County Laois , their fresh farm produce such as milk, free range eggs and apple juice is available to purchase onsite; Bayview Farm Cottages in County Antrim, where cows lounge lazily on the golden beach nearby; or County Waterford's Glasha House , voted 2020 B&B of the Year.

Meanwhile, in more urban settings, B&Bs and guesthouses promise the personal touch that most hotels can only dream of. Stunning St Jude’s in Galway city prides itself on its local, organic food; Victorian Maryville House in Belfast tempts the tastebuds with its indulgent afternoon tea. While historic McGettigan’s Townhouse in Dublin city centre feels lavish and exclusive. And in Kinsale in West Cork, Perryville’s pretty pink façade welcomes everyone to the town – whether they’re staying or not!

Riverside House, County Mayo

Riverside House, County Mayo

Perhaps the best part about staying at a B&B is the in-house expert: an owner who lives in the area will know exactly what to recommend to guarantee you get the most out of your stay.

So, in Taobh Coille , Agnes and John will arrange a local fishing trip for you; or at Mount Royd , Josephine can set up a visit to neighbouring Dunmore House , beloved holiday retreat of crime writer, Agatha Christie.

It’s little wonder so many visitors return to the same B&Bs year in, year out: when it feels like you’re staying with friends, why go anywhere else?

And one final tip: if you want to have a relaxing, stress free trip, pay a visit to B&B Ireland . With over 700 unique B&Bs across the island, you can pick your favourite destination, and book it in advance for maximum convenience.

The 20 Most Charming Bed-and-Breakfasts in America

Posted: March 13, 2024 | Last updated: March 13, 2024

When I look back on my many years of travel, my most memorable trips involved staying at small properties—especially bed-and-breakfasts. On one North Carolina trip, the innkeeper sat down with my husband and me to chat about food and travel over a glass of wine. He told us about the furnishings in the elegantly restored home, which were purchased in far-flung places around the globe—it was fascinating. He also offered us a taste of snake wine that he'd brought back from Asia and had been saving for a special occasion. (In case you're wondering, while we were flattered that we were that occasion, we graciously passed on the offer.)

Unlike large, and sometimes sterile, hotels, these intimate accommodations are a welcome respite after a long journey or a busy day of sightseeing. They're incredibly cozy, often furnished with fireplaces and incredible decor from another time, and they tend to be romantic. But you also get to socialize with other guests over wine and appetizers, and in the morning, you gather around a communal table over a scrumptious homemade breakfast and talk about your plans for the day. You may make new friends during your visit and even stay in touch with the owners for years to come, as we have.

How we chose the best bed-and-breakfasts

Our selection of the best bed-and-breakfasts in the U.S. is based on personal experience, expert recommendations, user reviews and star ratings. I have stayed in countless bed-and-breakfasts around the world, but I haven’t been to all of them, of course, so I've also researched those that consistently receive high marks from guests. And I'm not just a frequent guest—I also do this for a living as a travel writer. The best bed-and-breakfasts for a cozy stay

I have covered B&Bs several times over the last 14 years, and let's just say that I really enjoy doing my research on this topic!

An important note about B&Bs before booking

Most bed-and-breakfasts are geared toward adults and do not permit children, since the properties are small and typically designed for quiet and relaxing romantic getaways . Some accept pets, while others may only allow service dogs. And when it comes to booking your stay, some B&Bs list availability through sites like Airbnb in addition to accepting reservations on their website or by phone.

This list of the most charming bed-and-breakfasts in America includes private homes, inns and lesser-known gems from California to Maine, and Florida to Texas, with a wide range of options for every type of traveler. And they’re destinations to visit in and of themselves, though there’s often a lot going on in the towns where they’re located. Read on to plan your next trip and pick the perfect B&B for you!
