This is a sample itinerary, outlining a few locations we might visit during this expedition cruise. We do our utmost to offer you the best experience, however we have no control over nature and wildlife. Our itineraries are flexible and landing sites may change depending on weather- and ice conditions.

Flight to Greenland

Our adventure starts with a charter flight from Reykjavik (Iceland) to Constable Pynt (Greenland) where you will land at the small airport of Nerlerit Inaat. The flight gives you the exclusive opportunity to view the impressive landscape form the air. The vast scale of this desolate country is striking. Upon arrival in Greenland our crew will meet and greet you onboard the comfortable Polarfront. Make yourself at home and relax while enjoying a welcome cocktail as the ship departs for your adventure.

eastern greenland cruise

During our expedition cruise we will seize any opportunity for a zodiac cruise to get a closer look of the enormous cathedral size icebergs or to view wildlife both from the water and on land. When the opportunity arises, you may also have the chance to participate in a kayak activity or have fun on the pedalo and even enjoy the scenery below the surface while polar snorkeling!

Viking Bay & Danmark Island

We might sail along the glaciated Volquart Boons Coast on the south banks of Scoresbysund. Here you can enjoy the sights of one glacier after another for miles. Sailing west we will find Vikingebugt (or Viking Bay). It's known for its impressive basalt columns stacked along the shoreline. We will attempt a zodiac cruise at the foot of these vertiginous cliffs.

eastern greenland cruise

Not far from Vikingebugt lies Danmark Ø. The island is home to the remains of a long-abandoned Inuit settlement. This well-preserved archeological site shows the ancient winter and summer houses, as well as evidence of their arctic lifestyle. We might take the zodiac for a closer look at the vast glacier front and then disembark for a hike. The brown and reddish autumn colours of the tundra create a beautiful contrast against the bright white icebergs in the background.

Røde Fjord & Hare Fjord

Navigating through a maze of icebergs we will attempt to sail into some of the smaller branches of the fjord system, Røde Fjord and Hare Fjord. This might take us to Røde Ø, the Red Island. This beautiful red sandstone island looks like the surface of planet Mars. Its red rocky slopes, formed from sandstone sediments, provide a striking contrast to the dark blue Arctic waters and the vast blue and white icebergs that float silently in the waters of Scoresby Sund. If we can find a place to land you can walk among the autumn vegetation in search of musk oxen and arctic hares.

eastern greenland cruise

Ø Fjord & Sydkap

If we are able to continue our voyage north you'll get to see one of the most impressive fjords in the world: Ø Fjord. This strait is around 74 km long, with high mountains on each side and colossal icebergs silently floating in the calm water. Many of these ice giants are stationary, anchored to the bottom of Scoresby Sund, creating an almost alien setting. Our aim is to reach Sydkap in the north east of Scoresbysund. You might have the chance to disembark here for a hike up the mountain from where you have an incredible panoramic view over Bredning Hall Fjord. This fjord is renowned for its dazzling display of light and offering some of the most iconic sights in Eastern Greenland. While you're enjoying the views, also keep an eye out for the elusive Arctic hare which can be seen here sometimes.

Ittoqqortoormiit

Located at the entrance of the fjord system, Ittoqqortoormiit is the largest inhabited village in Scoresbysund. The 400 inhabitants of this isolated outpost rely on the bounty of the Arctic to sustain them and live off traditional hunting and fishing. The village was established here in 1925 because of the rich waters at the mouth of Scoresby Sund. At the post office you can buy stamps for your postcards, or just have a walk around town, say hello to the sled dogs and experience how people live out here in the remote arctic.

Expedition Activities

eastern greenland cruise

Photography

As our voyage takes place at the end of the summer, this expedition will yield extraordinary photographic opportunities. Days will be getting shorter, resulting in magnificent light for photography, the 'golden hour'. It’s that magical time of the day when the sun casts a softly diffused light over the arctic landscape. Photos taken during these moments capture a certain atmosphere that is almost impossible to replicate during any other time of the day. Excursions by zodiac take you in among the icebergs and we will attempt frequent landings to photograph the most beautiful sites and whenever opportunities arise along the way. In addition to the arctic landscape, you might have the chance to photograph whales as we encounter them, as well arctic hares, muskoxen and a variety of sea birds. As a bonus, you might see the Aurora Borealis dancing in the night sky over the iceberg-dotted fjords, the sight of a lifetime.

eastern greenland cruise

Kayaks & Paddle boat

On board there are 2 kayaks and a unique paddle boat (or pedalo) at your disposal. This offers you one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the quiet icy world of Scoresbysund. We advise you to have some basic kayaking experience and physical fitness for these activities. Please note that our water activities are subject to weather and ice conditions.

Polar Snorkeling

€ 500 per person.

During our voyage we offer the unique opportunity to go snorkeling in the icy waters of Scoresbysund. On board we'll provide you with quality Waterproof dry-suits and snorkeling equipment. You might get the chance to snorkel alongside grounded icebergs or somewhere along the rugged coast. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore Scoresbysund below the surface. An activity only few people have ever attempted. Our Polar Snorkeling package includes a drysuit and all the equipment you need for a cold water snorkel experience! East Greenland Experience

Recommended for you.

Adventure tourist takes photos of icebergs in Scoresbysund, Greenland, an area visited on an all-inclusive, luxury expedition Seabourn cruise.

Expect huge adventure in eastern Greenland, home to the world’s biggest fjord system and the largest nature reserve on earth. Scoresbysund’s massive fjord network — which branches out from the 70-mile-long main fjord — extends some 14,700 square miles across and more than 200 miles in depth. Its towering basalt walls reach 6,500 feet in some spots, while calving glaciers often match the size of the Empire State Building. Scoresbysund remained an Inuit secret until English explorer William Scoresby first navigated the system in 1822; its only town, tiny Ittoqqortoormiit, sits at the sound’s northern entrance. The town also serves as gateway to Greenland National Park, which comprises the entire northeastern corner of the country — a mind-numbing 375,000 square miles. (Texas clocks in at a mere 269,000.) Greenland’s sole national park is mostly covered by its ice sheet, and has no human inhabitants save a few meteorologists and members of the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.

Your Seabourn expedition voyage spends five full days exploring this fantastical labyrinth of fjords, one of the last wild and untouched places on the planet. Anticipate vast, seemingly endless arctic landscape teeming with wildlife, including great colonies of Atlantic puffin and other seabirds. Muskoxen and reindeer are often seen grazing below the coastal cliffs, while the fjord’s deep waters attract beluga whales, narwhals, and the ever-elusive Greenland shark. This is also the best region in Greenland for polar bear sightings.

Your time in eastern Greenland is entirely expedition focused with no set itinerary, although highlights may include:

Ittoqqortoormiit : Around 400 hardy souls inhabit Scoresbysund’s only town, a blend of Inuit and Danish cultures with colorful, kit-style buildings scattered about the rocky bluff.

Sydkap (South Cape) : Situated along Scoresbysund’s northeastern coast and set against a breathtaking alpine backdrop, this sloped headland boasts some of the area’s most impressive tundra flora.

Bear Islands : Ruins of ancient Thule stone houses can be found amongst this small cluster of low-lying rocky islands, located at the head of Øfjord.

Rødefjord (Red Fjord): Deep within Scoresbysund lies this spectacular fjord walled entirely by red sandstone cliffs. Your Zodiac navigates a small sea cave on monolithic Røde Ø (Red Island) and, conditions permitting, lands for a chance to survey the colorful panorama.

INCLUDED EXPEDITIONS:

Zodiac Cruises

Regular Zodiac cruises with your Expedition Team often provide the best vantage to admire East Greenland’s grand landscape, huge icebergs, and glacier fronts. While encounters with fascinating marine life are possible, your Zodiac can also be a good platform for watching birds overhead and grasping the immensity of this beautiful land.

Nature Hikes

Set out on foot across the stark, seemingly barren tundra landscapes as your Expedition Team members point out delightful small plants and flowers that thrive in this hostile environment. Encounters with arctic foxes, muskoxen, or interesting bird species are always possible, as is the rare polar bear sighting. Whether seen as a tiny white speck in the distance or ambling slowly along a shoreline, a glimpse of this “king of the Arctic” is always awe-inspiring. Rest assured that all walks are carefully monitored by Bear Guards, who work to maintain the safety of visitor and bear alike.

OPTIONAL EXPEDITIONS:

Join your Kayak Team for a paddle along the shores wherever your expedition stops in East Greenland. The chance to experience this spectacular and magical region from a water-level perspective is unique and not to be missed.

Diving by Submersible

Submersible :

Delve below the frigid water surface of eastern Greenland in one of your ship’s custom-built submarines, exploring a plankton-rich realm where few have ever ventured — and fascinating discoveries are yet to be made.

Qaqortoq, Greenland is a place teeming with thousands of years of Nordic history, soothing hot springs, and water activities like exploring on a sailboat. On a transatlantic cruise that stops in Greenland, you’ll find yourself far from the ordinary. Traveling in an Arctic climate requires a certain level of curiosity and adventure, but you never have to sacrifice comfort while you explore the region on one of our luxury cruise ships.

Only about 3,000 people live in Qaqortoq, which means it’s a cozy, tight-knit community. Take a dip in the hot springs of Uunartoq for complete rejuvenation and restoration. Discover the ruins of an ancient Viking settlement at Hvalsey Church. Experience authentic cuisine from the area, or simply walk around the colorful streets. On your Greenland cruise, this quirky colonial town will welcome you with open arms.

The majestic beauty of this artsy Greenland town is best experienced on foot. A hike around Lake Tasersuaq promises incredible views of Qaqortoq and the mountain just beyond.

Hvalsey Church

The last evidence of the Vikings in Greenland can be found at Hvalsey Church, where the best-preserved Nordic ruins in the area overlook the waterfront. The isolated, commanding ruins showcase thousands of years of Nordic history. Guided tours are popular, and it takes about 25-30 minutes via boat to reach the ruins of Hvalsey Church.

Qaqortoq Museum

The Qaqortoq Museum is an ideal stop for history buffs during a Greenland cruise. The museum is cleverly located within an old blacksmith workshop. Here, you’ll find artifacts of both the Inuit and Norse populations from thousands of years ago.

Top Food & Drink Spots Near the Qaqortoq Cruise Port

The food scene in Qaqortoq is minimal, so don’t expect to find chain restaurants lining every street corner downtown. Stop in for drinks and live music at Arctic Cafe. When you see a yellow VW peeking from the wall, you’ll know you’re in the right place. Restaurant Napparsivik is popular for morning or afternoon coffee, fresh meat and fish dishes, and regional eats. Inside the Hotel Qaqortoq, enjoy a drink at Mikisoq, a local pub.

Culture & History of the Qaqortoq Cruise Port

Surviving in the frigid climate was no small feat for early residents, who were Paleo-Eskimo populations, Norse Vikings, and later, the Dorset people. Most of Greenland is occupied by arctic ice caps, so most people who settle down to live in the country gather in coastal cities and towns. By the 20th century, Greenland had established strong trade ties with North America and Denmark. The economy relies on natural resources, from whaling to fishing.

Qaqortoq Port Facilities & Location

Once you arrive, there is a tourist office with helpful city maps and free internet. You can get your bearings here before heading out to explore. Local maps detail the area’s hiking trails and the most popular attractions you can choose from on a Greenland cruise to Qaqortoq.

Shopping Near the Qaqortoq Cruise Port

Shopping near the Qaqortoq cruise port is fairly minimal since the town has a population of 3,000 people. Qaqortoq Souvenir Shop is a popular place to shop for keepsakes like handmade goods and authentic souvenirs.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Greenland is the Danish krone (DKK), but you’ll find British pounds and U.S. dollars are accepted in some establishments. Credit and debit cards are less likely to be used in smaller shops, so be sure to ask when you arrive before trying to pay with a credit card. A service charge is typically included in your bill at restaurants.

Northeast Greenland National Park and Scoresby Sund expedition days

Explore the wild east

We’ll spend the next 10 days exploring Greenland’s remote and pristine east coast. Extending for over 1,740 miles from north to south, this long stretch of coast is cold, isolated and remote, even by Greenlandic standards. The south-flowing East Greenland Current brings lots of sea ice directly from the Arctic Ocean, challenging human settlement but creating a haven for ice-dependent wildlife, including the polar bear.

Local weather and ice conditions will dictate our exact route, but our plan is to sail first to Scoresby Sund, the world’s largest fjord system. You’ll feel a deep sense of serenity in this wild and rugged region with white and blue icebergs floating in mirror-like waters surrounded by looming mountains. If conditions permit, we’ll visit Ittoqqortoormiit – the most remote inhabited community in the western hemisphere.

Should the sea ice be favorable, we’ll continue our journey north to the beautiful Northeast Greenland National Park – the world’s largest national park. Visiting this fragile Artic wilderness is a rare privilege as only a few visitors are permitted here each year.

Apart from old trapper huts, some science research stations, and a military outpost, there are very few traces of human life in this 375,000 square mile park. Be assured that this is one of the quietest places on Earth, and you’ll enjoy a feeling of great peace as we explore this beautiful wilderness.

As this is an expedition cruise, the Captain and Expedition Team will guide us to the most favorable spots on a day-by-day basis. Our goal will be to pack in as many shore landings, small boat cruises, nature walks, kayaking adventures and wildlife sightings as possible.

eastern greenland cruise

Denmark Strait

Heading to Iceland

After exploring the remote beauty of Greenland, we’ll set our course back to Iceland. Why Cruise to Greenland?

Remote and still largely off the map of mainstream tourism, Greenland offers pristine wilderness, authentic culture and thrilling activities, making it an unforgettable adventure destination. Brightly colored coastal towns, skyscraper icebergs, massive glaciers, extensive fjords, vast tundra and fluffy sled dogs draw photographers and intrepid travelers from all over the world.

As the saying goes, “When you’ve seen the world, there is always Greenland.” Due to Greenland’s inhospitable Arctic terrain, lack of developed road network and the fact that it’s 80% covered by the world’s second-largest ice sheet, it’s not the easiest country to explore. That’s where the benefits of a cruise to Greenland comes in.

Greenland small ship cruises make the most of scattered settlements and remote fjords by sailing you efficiently along the coastline. In fact, of Greenland’s 60,000 inhabitants, 90% are of Indigenous descent, living in settlements up and down the coasts. Greenland is the least densely populated country on the planet, in fact, and is an independent Danish territory with its own parliament.

Depending on where you visit, you may have opportunities for hiking, kayaking, camping, mountain biking, dog sledding, rock climbing and even helicopter assisted adventures. Plus other activities like Zodiac cruising through icefields, watching for arctic wildlife and the aurora borealis, visiting fascinating historic sites and authentic Greenlandic villages.

Greenland Expedition Cruise Ships

Greenland expedition cruise ships are purpose built to explore polar regions in safety and comfort. They feature ice-strengthened hulls, sophisticated navigational equipment, small craft and sometimes even helicopters to transport guests ashore in remote locations exploring away from the ship.

Being on a Greenland expedition cruise does not mean you have to sacrifice comfort. Greenland luxury ships offer large suites, some with balconies, gourmet cuisine and five-star service to satisfy the most sophisticated tastes. View the full fleet of Arctic ships offering Greenland small ship cruises.

Greenland Cruise Itineraries & Regions

Cruises to Greenland visit three distinct regions: East Greenland, South Greenland and West Greenland. Some itineraries may highlight two or three regions, while others concentrate on a deeper exploration of one. Regions of Greenland may be part of an extended route that also include nearby Arctic islands like Svalbard and Iceland to the east, or a greater Canada and Northwest Passage itinerary to the west.

Which area will interest you the most? We take a deeper dive below to help you decide.

East Greenland

Above the Arctic circle, East Greenland is the least visited and most remote part of the island. It offers natural beauty and a surprising collection of flora and fauna. East Greenland is also one of the least populated areas in Greenland. Some communities who live in this isolated territory speak a different language and still follow an ancestral way of life living off the land.

For nine months out of the year, East Greenland is covered with snow and pack ice, so during the short summer season an ice-strengthened vessel is needed to operate here and daily cruise stops are often still guided by weather and ice conditions.

In East Greenland you will likely visit two main areas on a Greenland small ship cruise: Scoresby Sund and Northeast Greenland National Park.

Scoresby Sund is the world’s largest and deepest fjord system. Its tree-like structure branches off into a labyrinth of fjords with massive icebergs, towering basalt walls, calving glaciers and surprisingly colorful tundra. Near the mouth of Scoresby Sund is Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most remote settlements on Earth. For most of the year, its 300 inhabitants are cut off from the rest of the country and survive by hunting and fishing. Scoresby Sund is one of the best places in the Arctic to see the northern lights as well as local wildlife.

Farther north is the world’s largest national park, the Northeast Greenland National Park . With no permanent human population, it is one of the best places to spot Greenland’s wildlife and is also an important breeding ground for polar bear and walrus. Access to the park is strictly controlled, so cruise operators must apply for separate permits to sail here.

Cruises to East Greenland typically start with an embarkation from Iceland or Svalbard . Some  Arctic cruises  may visit all three Arctic islands as part of a larger itinerary and range from 10-18 days or more. You can even visit East Greenland from the route of a  North Pole expedition .

Bright and colorful green, blue, red, and yellow wood houses of the remote settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit in Greenland's Scoresby Sund.

South Greenland

South Greenland is a maze of scenic fjords, sounds, islets and inlets. Sailing through Prins Christian Sund and Skjoldungen Sund surrounded by high iconic peaks and turquoise lakes, you’ll see why the heart of this region is known as “Arctic Patagonia.” But it’s not all icy fjords and mountain peaks. South Greenland has a uniquely warm microclimate, and its surprisingly lush and fertile coast is filled with green pastures and sheep farms. The “Garden of Greenland” is perfect for adventure experiences like hiking, kayaking, mountain bike riding, rock climbing and more. From the ruins of Brattahlíð, the estate of Viking Erik the Red, to the modern landscape of Kujataa, the UNESCO World Heritage region of southern Greenland, see historic sites with the largest and best-preserved Norse ruins, green-roofed turf houses, and a 14 th century chapel built and named for Erik the Red’s wife, Tjoldhilde.

Unless it’s part of a larger itinerary, cruises to South Greenland typically start from Narsarsuaq, south Greenland, with charter flights connecting to Reykjavik, Iceland.

In South Greenland tall jagged granite peaks and turquoise water are set against blue sky

West Greenland

Home to Nuuk, the nation’s charming capital, West Greenland is the island’s most developed and visited region. Colorful Inuit communities like Ilulissat, Rode Bay, Ilimanaq and Uummannaq are perched at the edge of the Greenland ice cap and carry on their timeless way of life.

A highlight of the west is cruising through Disko Bay and stopping at several fascinating landing sites. The settlement town of Ilulissat is known for having more sled dogs than people. The Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to Jakobshavn Glacier, one of the world’s most active glaciers, dubbed “the birthplace of icebergs.”

The Baffin Sea is the body of water that lies between West Greenland and the Arctic Archipelago of Canada. It serves as the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage, the legendary sea route that links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Access to and from West Greenland is via the international airport in Kangerlussuaq. There are Greenland small ship cruises that focus on West Greenland only; explore both West Greenland and Arctic Canada; or use Kangerlussuaq as an embarkation point for Northwest Passage journeys.

Northwest Passage Cruises

Become part of an elite club of cruisers. Greenland cruise itineraries that include the Northwest Passage explore the icy frontier above 80° north on the same route that has attracted legendary explorers for centuries.

Some operators attempt to sail the full length of the Northwest Passage. These journeys range 22-30 days long and start from Kangerlussuaq in west Greenland, cruising long Baffin Island, through the Bellot Strait, along mainland Canada’s northern shoreline and around Alaska’s Far North shoreline, ending in Nome, Alaska.

Abbreviated routes may just explore the eastern portion of the Northwest Passage, starting in West Greenland and ending in the Canadian Arctic archipelago. These itineraries are generally around 17 days.

Coastal Comparison & A Note about Wildlife

The southern, eastern and western coasts of Greenland all have their own unique experiences and features dictated by climate, wildlife, human population and geology.

The west is characterized by beautiful mountainous landscapes and abundant, brightly colored settlements. The south holds fascinating Norse history, and due to a lower human population in the east, there are slightly greater possibilities of seeing more wildlife.

Most travelers come to Greenland to experience the Inuit culture and the breathtaking natural beauty of mountains, glaciers and enormous icebergs. All are possible in any of the three regions. If wildlife is your number one priority, consider adding East Greenland and Svalbard to your itinerary if a combination of landscapes and wildlife is what you’re looking for.

Best Time for Cruises to Greenland

Most Greenland cruises operate between June and October, when most of the country’s coasts are snow-free and vegetation is thawed out. The midnight sun can be experienced in the summer between mid-April to the end of August. From the end of August through October, the aurora borealis can be viewed. In fact, our AdventureSmith experts witnessed the northern lights enroute to East Greenland during an August North Pole expedition that stopped in Scoresby Sund (pictured below). See all focused northern lights cruises to learn more.

When visiting Greenland, remember that it’s the biggest island in the world, so there are climate variations throughout the seasons, from coast to coast, and even from fjord to fjord.

Guests stand on deck of ship staring up at the green strip of lights across the dark night sky, it the aurora borealis in Greenland.

Hear It From Greenland Cruise Travelers

I’m 72 and I was looking for an adventure which was different from the usual European trip of visiting endless museums, palaces, churches, etc. I don’t enjoy crowded venues, mobbed by other tourists. Greenland was not a place that every other traveler visits. This expedition gave me the opportunity to hike in places where no one had stepped foot before, in breathtaking surroundings and yet I didn’t have make any arrangements for sleeping accommodations, dining, tours, etc. AdventureSmith and Quark did it all for me, all I had to do is board the ship!

I loved this trip exploring South Greenland. We experienced so much in our time aboard and we had great weather during our trip. The scenery was stunning and varied. We spent a lot of time off the ship exploring by zodiac, on foot, paddling, and by helicopter(2x). Exploring by helicopter and making 2 landings in Greenland was an unforgettable experience.

Fascinating trip to a rarely visited part of the world on an exceptional vessel.

We had an absolutely perfect trip!! First class from beginning to end. Loved the helicopter rides and the views we were able to experience from high above Greenland. The ship was fabulous. The room was great. Spacious, considering we were on a ship. It had a large window so we could take in all of the spectacular views. The staff was wonderful. The food was excellent. We would definitely travel with Quark again.

Accommodations Review

We had an Explorer Triple which was roomy enough for three. It had lots of storage. The shower was OUTSTANDING!

Meals Review

A wonderful variety, prepared extremely well and they were able to address specific requests.

Itinerary Review

I enjoyed the ability to visit hiking sites via the helicopters. I felt like our group was possibly the first people to walk on these locations. The paddle excursion around and among icebergs was a thrill and of course, the various sites for hiking via the zodiacs was always enjoyable. Everywhere seemed to be pristine.

Transportation Review

Clear instructions regarding our Quark connections.

Fellow Passengers Review

I loved meeting my fellow passengers from around the world. Everyone was friendly and fun to be around.

Crew & Guides Review

The Expedition Leader explained considerations for the following day’s activities and she always seemed to find a work around if the weather (clouds, ice, etc) didn’t permit the “planned” days activities. She was personable, humorous and very professional. I was wowed by her ability to get things done.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Arielle forwarded us information in a timely manner and was available to answer our questions if they weren’t addressed in the Quark information package.

Ultramarine is the culmination of decades of expedition experience built into the perfect expedition platform. The Balcony Suite I was in was comfortable, quiet, and was in a good location to access all parts of the ship. I enjoyed the Common areas of the ship a lot, the Panorama Lounge + Espresso Station, the Bistro for Breakfast and Lunch, the ambassador theater for presentations and briefings and the massive outdoor areas for taking in the views.

I enjoyed Heli Hiking in Prince Christian Sound. We were able to get amazing 360 degree views with multiple fjords, rocky peaks, alpine lakes, and hanging glaciers. The fjords in this area are framed by glacier carved granite domes and spires with some still having glaciers around the tops and in the valleys. Landing on the ice sheet looked like you were landing on the moon with Ice as all you can see in all directions. They had expedition teams members on the ice who gave you a brief intro to the environment and a couple directions about where you could and couldn't go. The landing site they had chosen had solid ice underfoot and small creeks and pools around the immediate area where you could see the most beautiful blue colors of the ice coming through the crystal clear water above. Being on the ice sheet even for a short time was a breathtaking highlight from the trip. The Heli flight back I had a window seat and was able to take some amazing aerial shots of the ice sheet and tidewater glaciers from above on the way back to the ship.

The food aboard was excellent and the service was excellent also. I liked the option to eat at the Bistro for Breakfast and Lunch. It has a great view and is smaller and less busy than the Balena restaurant which is the main one. I think more variety could be offered at the buffets.

This trip has a variety of ability levels and ages. The expedition team did a great job of provided activities for everyone. There were some passengers I enjoyed socializing with more than others but that is to be expected in any group setting.

Ali was our expedtion leader and she was amazing throughout. We had great weather and we were able to accomplish so many activites throughout the voyage. When you think about what it takes to operate so many activities and the amount of staff and resources that takes, it is amazing what they accomplished. I enjoyed interacting with Mauricio, Colin, Nix, Alice, Emily, Juju, Clement, Gordo all from the Expedition team. There were so many aboard and they were all personable and accessible. I enjoyed talking with them at meals or in the lounge as well as on the excursions. Many of the staff had worked with Quark for 10+ years in both Arctic and Antarctica.

Be ready to be flexible and to be active. Luggage requirements for the charter flights were a challenge so plan to pack light and efficient

The vessel is luxurious, cabins and public areas first rate.

The buffet was more appealing with more choices than the restaurant which tried hard to be innovative, but missed appealing to me.

[I most enjoyed]...Seeing 13 polar bears in 6 days acting in a natural way, showing curiosity but no fear. The vastness of the sea and landscape. Riding in a dogsled. Wish we had more chances to visit land and see Arctic plants.

Be prepared to be in awe.

Steve Moir expedition leader had unlimited enthusiasm that was contagious. Naturalists Alize Fouchard, Alexandra Morozova, and Gordana Mrakovcic not only led walks but also gave excellent lectures. Ornithologist Manuel Marin was special, as was local guide Jaakusaaq Soerensen, who taught us about Inuit culture, religion, and language.

There were more English speakers on this cruise than my previous Ponant cruise. Had good interactions with a good number of them.

Andrew Browning never misses a detail in preparing me for my trips. Can’t ask for better. I recommend AdventureSmith Explorations to friends and family frequently.

First rate all the way!

Liked the wide variety at each meal. It was nice to have wine served with dinner. Deserts were fantastic. I liked the fact that you could also order items that were served daily at lunch and dinner. An example would be to get a hamburger at lunch or a grilled chicken breast at dinner. That was nice. Only thing a did not like were the cookies. They were bland.

Wow! So much beauty in Greenland! We LOVED the kayaking amid the huge icebergs. That was our favorite experience. We also LOVED the helicopter rides, especially over the ice sheet. It was jaw dropping! We enjoyed meeting some of the Greenlanders on our stops at the villages. They had a choir which performed for us. It was wonderful.  I'm sure they spent a lot of time practicing. The hikes we took were all great and each one was a little different. We really enjoyed doing the Polar Plunge! It was more fun than I expected. Plus, we received a "badge" showing our Arctic Polar Plunge had been accomplished.  LOVED the shot of Vodka too!

Go! The trip was even better than I expected!

Allison Gordan (Our leader) was incredible!!! She guided this cruise through unexpected weather in order that we could enjoy every aspect of this tour that we had hoped for. We were able to do everything because of her determination to give us the best trip possible. She is a wonderful speaker too. Funny, but professional.  What really impressed me was that she called us by name after a couple of days on the trip. There were 3 of us together, and she got the names right every time. There were 160 guests on this ship. How does she do that?? She certainly made us feel important. Plus, she was so nice to talk to. Answered all of our questions. She was just wonderful. We also really enjoyed her father, Ian Gordan. He was funny, personable, and a true professional. Also, kudos to our Nix, our photographer. She did a great job and fun to be with. Other great staff members included Marla, Alice, Peter, Fabrece, Neil, actually everyone was super great and extremely helpful no matter what we needed.

We met so many great people from Ireland, Australia, England, South Africa, America, Canada. Some of whom I will never forget!

Everything was perfect! Arielle was fantastic. She was right there anytime we needed anything. Outstanding service and friendly too!

Greenland Overview

The best of Greenland can be explored along the rocky, fjord-lined coast, which is a good thing as there are no roads connecting the small towns scattered throughout this massive island. The coast seems like an endless reel of icebergs, glaciers, deep fjords, mountains and vast stretches of wilderness.

Greenland is an autonomous Danish territory with its own parliament. The official language is West Greenlandic (Kalaallisut), though many also speak Danish and English. Greenlanders are an outdoorsy people. In fact, Greenland is considered the birthplace of kayaking.

The landscape is rugged, the people are welcoming. Greenland’s traditional Inuit communities (descendants of the ancient Thule people) appeal to travelers with a passion for understanding older cultures. There are some wildlife-viewing opportunities within Greenland. In West Greenland, for instance, wildlife sightings can include migratory seals such as harp, ringed, hooded and bearded seals, as well as humpback and bowhead whales, while in Northeast Greenland it’s possible to see grazing muskoxen. The lure for many visitors is, of course, the Aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, the phenomenal explosion of green, purple and red lights dancing across the night sky.

Destination Highlights

Ilulissat icefjord.

The world-famous Ilulissat Icefjord runs west 40 km (25 miles) from the Greenland ice sheet to Disko Bay, just south of the town of Ilulissat on the west coast of Greenland. Not only is it stunningly beautiful, it’s one of the best places in the world to witness glacier calving—huge chunks of ice crashing into the icy Arctic waters. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

A staggering 40% of the world’s muskoxen live in Greenland. The vast – and mostly remote – stretches of wilderness, deep fjords and nature preserves provide natural habitats for other wildlife, including polar bears, blue whales, narwhals, fin whales, humpback, ringed seals and rare Arctic birds.

Scoresbysund, East Greenland

What bucket-lister doesn’t want to visit the largest fjord in the world? The main body of Scoresby Sund, on the eastern coast of Greenland, is approximately 110 km long and reaches a depth of 1,450 metres (4,700 feet) in places. The ancient Thule people, ancestors of modern-day Inuit, lived in Scoresby Sund until about 1800. The fjord is home to seals, narwhals, polar bears, muskoxen, geese and seabirds.

Ilulissat (population 4,905) is the ideal destination for anyone wishing to learn about Greenlandic culture. Established in 1741, Ilulissat is the third-largest settlement (after the cities of Nuuk and Sisimiut) and is home to a handful of museums and art galleries, where travelers can do a deep-dive into Greenland’s history. But don’t miss the local shops where visitors can participate in a kaffernik, a traditional coffee gathering. Adventure-seekers can try their hands – and legs – at dogsledding, kayaking and hiking.

Nuuk may be the world’s smallest capital city (population: 17,000) but the Greenlandic capital delivers an unforgettable visitor experience. For starters, it’s picturesque: the city’s waterfront is lined with rows of brightly colored houses against the backdrop of the Sermitsiaq mountain. Situated on a fjord, Nuuk is a rarity in that the city views include waterfalls and icebergs. One of the must-visit venues is the Greenland National Museum: it houses scores of archeological, cultural and historical artifacts, as well as art and handicrafts. The most viewed exhibit is that of the four Qilakitsoq mummies, the remains of three women and a baby which were discovered in a tomb in 1972. Experts believe the mummies date back to 1475 AD.

Top Things to See

eastern greenland cruise

Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

Few nighttime experiences rival the natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, an otherworldly explosion of multi-colored lights that sweep across the night sky. The green, purple and red lights of the Aurora extend from 80 kilometres (50 miles) to as high as 640 kilometres (400 miles) above the earth’s surface. Visitors to Greenland have the best chance of viewing the multi-colored light show between late September and April.

Prins Christian Sund

Prins Christian Sund

The 105-kilometer-long (66-mile) Prince Christian Sound fjord, which was named in honor of the prince who later became King Christian VIII of Denmark, is a stunning maze of fjords and channels which are home to calving glaciers, sheer cliffs and jagged mountains. The waterway in Southern Greenland separates the mainland from Sammisoq and other islands of the Cape Farewell Archipelago near the southernmost tip of Greenland.

Northeast Greenland National Park

Northeast Greenland National Park

At 972,000 square kilometres, Greenland National Park, located in the northeastern part of the country, is the largest national park in the world. It’s not inhabited, except for a few meteorologists and armed forces personnel.  It’s estimated that 40% of the world’s musk oxen live in this park along with polar bears and, near the coastal regions, walruses and assorted whales. Other mammals include Arctic fox, stoat (a short-tailed weasel), collared lemming and Arctic hare.

Uummannaq

The tiny island of Uummannaq is one of the few places in the world where local Inuit still follow a traditional lifestyle based on hunting and fishing. Formerly known as Thule (after the forbearers of modern Inuit), Uummannaq is located off the west coast of Greenland. It was founded in 1763 and is home to about 1,200 Inuit, making it the second-largest town in North Greenland. Approximately 80% of the land is covered by an ice sheet that reaches up to 4 km thick.

Tasermiut Fjord

Tasermiut Fjord

Adventure travelers call it the “Arctic Patagonia.” The 70-kilometer long Tasermiut Fjord in southwestern Greenland attracts climbers and mountaineers from around the world who are eager to ascend one of the “big walls” in the world of climbing. Tasermiut Fjord is accessible by boat from Nanortalik Island,  which in Greenlandic means “Place of Polar Bears” or “Place Where the Polar Bears Go.”

Points of Interest

Ittoqqortoormiit

Many believe that Ittoqqortoormiit (population: 450) is the most isolated town in Greenland, which could be true since sea ice blocks ship access to the town for about nine months of the year. Ittoqqortoormiit, which is close to Greenland National Park, was founded in 1925 by settlers from Tasiilaq along with some families from west Greenland. It’s a haven for anyone with a yearning to explore true wilderness, experience a traditional Greenlandic lifestyle or try their hand at dogsledding. Many people living in Ittoqqortoormiit still hunt seals, polar bears, narwhals and musk-oxen.

Igaliku

The little village of Igaliku, home to about 50 inhabitants in southern Greenland, is Greenland’s oldest sheep-farming settlement. History buffs, on the other hand, flock to the remarkable red sandstone ruins of the Gardar Cathedral (the largest church in Greenland in the Middle Ages) and bishop’s residence, which date back to the early 12th century.

Kujataa

The Kujataa historical site is home to ruins and artifacts related to Norse and Inuit farming at the edge of the ice cap. Visitors can view remnants of Inuit farmhouses as well as archeological sites associated with the Norse settlements, including fields and pasturelands that were once part of local farms.

Hvalsey Ruins

Hvalsey Church is the best-preserved Norse ruin in Greenland and houses the last written record of Greenlandic Norse culture: a record of a wedding that dates back to September 1408. Various ruins are located in the fjord of Hvalsey (Qaqortukulooq), close to Qaqortoq, the largest town in South Greenland.

Ella Oya

Ella Oya (or Ella Island) is a hiker’s paradise within Northeast Greenland National Park. It’s surrounded by tall rugged cliffs, ice-choked waters and gorgeous blue icebergs. Hikers are challenged by steep climbs but are rewarded with incredible views: sky-blue icebergs, rugged cliffs and tundra.

Best Time to See the Northern Lights

September to October. Later in the season is the best time for visitors to see the Northern Lights as increased darkness improves their visibility.

East Greenland

Ittoqqortoormiit

Tiilerilaaq.

East Greenland is just a short flight from Iceland but its culture and landscapes are a world away. In a land dominated by the Ice Cap and impossibly steep mountain ranges, 3,500 people have made their home.

East Greenlandic culture is deeply rooted in myths and legends, often expressed in bone and rock carvings, but at the same time it is a globally connected culture with strong hunting roots and an everyday spirit of adventure.

Ice fiords, hiking, heliskiing, small settlements, northern lights, and boat rides combine to make East Greenland a year round destination, and the main town Tasiilaq also acts as the gateway for adventurers on longer climbing, kayaking, Ice Cap, and mountaineering expeditions in the rugged backcountry.

East Greenland is an isolated yet very special place. The language is different and the culture is deeply rooted in myths and legends, which is expressed in their much-coveted handicrafts.

Cruises Face New Rules in Polar Regions

Svalbard , an archipelago deep in the Arctic Circle known for its rugged, remote terrain of glaciers and frozen tundra, is often referred to as the land of the polar bear. But spotting one of the majestic white giants is expected to get harder next year under new regulations aimed at protecting the region from the growth in popularity of expedition cruising.

Beginning January 1, 2025, only ships carrying 200 or fewer passengers will be permitted to land-and only in select spots-within national parks and other protected areas of the Norwegian territory that are home to walruses, seals, reindeer, and more.

The new rule , among several changes enacted by the government of Norway in February, is even more strict than those for cruises in Antarctica, where ships carrying up to 500 people can make landings, albeit with no more than 100 people disembarking at a time.

It's one of a growing list of recently adopted or proposed restrictions for the Arctic and the Antarctic that aim to regulate where visitors can go and what they can do when they get there.

Like debates about overtourism worldwide, the attempt to balance environmental concerns with booming travel demand is a tug-of-war that has been going on for years-and one that will no doubt continue to escalate in response to the steady increase in expedition cruise ships being built and deployed.

Here's a look at the new and proposed rules for polar tourism, and the impact they might have.

New rules for cruises in Svalbard

Last year, 32 boats carrying nearly 24,000 passengers visited Svalbard, compared to 25 ships carrying just over 20,000 passengers in 2019, according to numbers provided by the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO).

While larger ships will still be able to visit Svalbard's only cruise port in Longyearbyen, the northernmost settlement in the world, it's just the jumping-off point for sailing deeper into the wild to explore by foot and on Zodiacs and kayaks.

Expedition ships traditionally carry up to 200 passengers, and those small ships make up 70 to 80 percent of the Svalbard sailings, according to industry estimates. But as expedition cruising has grown, so has the size of some of the ships, including some of the luxury entrants into the expedition market. Seabourn and Silversea's new expedition ships, for instance, carry between 200 and 300 passengers. Scenic's new ships carry just over 200, but the company keeps polar sailings to 200 passengers.

Besides restricting passenger counts of ships in the protected areas, the new Norwegian regulations will limit to 43 the number of protected areas where the ships can drop anchor and take their passengers to explore. They will also prohibit people and boats from getting closer than 500 feet to areas where walruses congregate, and prohibit cruise ships from breaking fast ice, or ice that is connected to the shore or seabed-a controversial practice that some employ to give passengers a closer view of polar bears or to allow passengers to walk on ice.

Exactly what impact these rules will have on cruising in the region remains to be seen. But AECO said it "will not only limit operations, but also will put a severe strain on the remaining areas open for shore-landings."

Howard Whelan, a veteran guide with the Australian company Aurora Expeditions , which only sails ships with fewer than 150 passengers, said he, too, is concerned about the impact of funneling all the ships into limited sites rather than having them spread out and explore more widely across the archipelago. But he applauded the fast-ice rule "because that's clearly affecting polar bear and seal habitat."

AECO said it was disappointed the rules were enacted "despite a thorough consultation process, where a united industry has worked on providing solutions in line with the common goal of protecting the vulnerable wildlife and wilderness of Svalbard."

Now the group said it is working with operators to help them better understand the new rules as they tweak their itineraries.

Hurtigruten, the Norwegian-based company that was a pioneer in expedition cruising, says that while its two ships that circumnavigate Svalbard have a maximum capacity of 200 passengers, it has larger ships that also sail the region.

"Our team of expedition experts await further updates from AECO, and we will work together to adapt our itineraries where necessary," said Karin Strand, vice president of expedition development at HX, Hurtigruten's expedition arm.

HX said it will announce new Svalbard itineraries in the weeks ahead that meet the new requirements, and that it is deepening its partnership with sister brand Hurtigruten Svalbard , the oldest and leading ground operator in the destination.

Proposed regulations for Greenland and Iceland

While the new regulations may push more Arctic cruises south to Iceland and to Greenland's remote eastern coast, authorities in those countries are also working on proposals that could restrict cruising.

Among those being considered is a tourism law that would create zoning in Greenland to define areas where tourism is restricted or banned, according to AECO.

Greenland is also looking at creating cruise-specific zones that define where cruise activities are either fully unrestricted, allowed under certain conditions, or prohibited entirely.

In Iceland, the government is considering regulations for Zodiac landings near the Dynjandi waterfall, the largest waterfall in the country's Westfjords region and a popular attraction for tourists on land and ship. And it recently passed an accommodation tax for overnight stays, including on cruise ships.

Antarctica looks into further limits, too

One of the hottest tickets for expedition cruising is Antarctica, which reported more than 100,000 visitors last year, mostly on cruise ships. Managing that growth is expected to be a key focus of next month's annual meeting of consultative members of the Antarctic Treaty, which last year agreed to begin work on a comprehensive tourism management plan.

Among the contentious topics discussed last year were whether to prohibit any expansion of landing sites for cruise-ship passengers and the possible banning of overnight camping and the use of helicopters and submersibles by cruise ships.

Debates for limiting tourism in Antarctica have been going on for years, but changes are much harder to adopt as there is no central government, and 56 countries are party to the treaty that governs the vast white continent.

New restrictions on cruises to Svalbard, Norway, go into effect on January 1, 2025.

The Moscow metro now has a full 4G coverage

  • On 19 Oct 2018

The Tele2 mobile network company became the first to build an infrastructure for 100% stations of the Moscow's metro. The high-quality 4G internet is now available on all 259 stations of the Moscow's metro, Moscow Central Circle (MCC) and monorail.

The operator has secured a 100% 4G indoor-coverage internet an all stations of the metropolitan metro, including the passageways, pavilions, and stairways. The investments into the project have exceeded 800 million rubles.

The Moscow underground is a specific infrastructure object, which has its own particularities. All works on designing, installation, and adjustment of the hardware should have been conducted exceptionally during night hours when the metro is closed for entry. A sufficient number of stations have a status of cultural heritage, thus, the network development has required additional approvement from the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow.

The network coverage within the metro system opens new horizons for the analysis of the "big data". Tele2 Network has analyzed the users' activity during the summer months and has indicated the busiest metro lines, which were: Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya, Zamoskvoretskaya and Kaluga-Riga lines. During the summer months, on the stations of Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya lines the subscribers have downloaded 125 TByte of internet-traffic, have made over 2 million calls with the total duration of 27 thousand hours, which equals to 3 years.
