The Kakum Canopy Walk in Ghana: A Guide for 2024

The canopy walk in Kakum National Park in Ghana, is claimed to be the only canopy walkway in Africa. It offers a spectacular view over the rainforest from high up in the trees, a place not so obvious for people to reach.

Although you probably won’t spot any wildlife here, the canopy walkway is a really fun experience that’s not so far from the city of Cape Coast , which was once the largest centre for the trade of enslaved people in West Africa .

I had a blast on the walkway, but I must admit that I was a little disappointed to find out that you have to join a guided tour and can’t walk around the area by yourself.

Nevertheless, doing the Kakum Canopy Walk was a great experience and it is something worth adding to your adventurous bucket list for Ghana.

In this post, you will find everything you need to know if you’re planning on doing the Kakum Canopy Walk in Ghana. So, let’s dive into it!

The Kakum Canopy Walk in Ghana: A Complete Guide

The Kakum Canopy Walk tour

As I mentioned in the introduction of this post, you have to join a guided tour to do the Kakum Canopy Walk.

There were 12 people in my group (one of them was an amazing 80-year-old woman) and the tour began with a short walk through the rainforest.

During this walk, our guide told us everything about the plants and trees and how the forest used to serve as a natural pharmacy.

After a little while, we started walking up some stairs and quickly arrived at the starting point of the walkway.

Our guide told us that if anyone got scared, they could take the short way by turning to the left and heading back. Although some people were afraid, they didn’t return but, everyone chose to conquer their fears.

The Kakum canopy walkway beautifully blends in with the colours of the forest. It passes over seven bridges , the highest one being over 50 m (164 ft) high . I can’t even begin to describe how beautiful the view is from up there!

It is a very fun experience to walk over the bridges and enjoy the landscape. If it had been possible to cross the bridges independently, I would have stayed much, much longer. The tour only lasted for 1 hour , which I found somewhat on the short side.

How much does the Kakum Canopy Walk cost

When you arrive at Kakum National Park, you will have to pay an entrance fee of 2 Ghana Cedis.

The Kakum canopy walk costs another 60 Ghana Cedis for foreigners or 25 Ghana Cedis for locals. The guide will also expect a tip afterwards and you cannot do the walk independently.

Tours can be booked at the reception, along with jungle walks and bird-watching tours . I had to wait for a short 20 minutes before my tour started.

Is the Kakum Canopy Walk safe?

As you’re walking over the bridges, they will swing and move. This makes it hard not to fall if you’re not holding on to the ropes. It is so much fun and completely safe though!

I’ve read some bad reviews saying that the Kakum Canopy Walk isn’t well maintained, but when I visited it, everything seemed fine (I’m not an expert though).

The bad reviews were from a few years before my visit, so maybe/hopefully they made some changes in the meantime to prevent accidents from happening.

How to get to Kakum National Park

Kakum National Park is a 1-hour drive from Cape Coast, the capital of the Central Region of Ghana.

From Cape Coast, the cheapest way to get to Kakum National Park is by taking the trotro (a shared minivan taxi) from the Old Stadium trotro stand. Just ask to be dropped off at the park’s entrance and the driver will tell you when to get off.

Another option to get to the national park is by hailing a taxi , but this will be a lot more expensive (do make sure to negotiate the price in advance).

Tip : Visit Kakum National Park early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Otherwise, you will be surrounded by big crowds and hordes of schoolchildren. I arrived at the park around 9 a.m. on a weekday and started walking at 9:30 a.m. We had the walkway all to ourselves but it was starting to get very crowded around 10:15 am.

• Brynx Haven (⭐ 8.9/10): Brynx Haven is one of the best places to stay in Cape Coast. This hotel is away from the hustle and bustle of the city and it offers beautiful, spacious rooms and a restaurant.
• Kokodo Guest House (⭐ 8.0/10): This beautiful guest house is located in a quiet area of Cape Coast and it is surrounded by greenery. Kokodo Guest House has a restaurant serving delicious African cuisine.

The Kakum Canopy Walk: Final thoughs

All in all, I loved the Kakum Canopy Walk and the landscapes are truly beautiful!

However, I was a little disappointed to find out that the only way to do this walk was by joining a guided group tour.

Although the guide was nice and had a lot of knowledge about the forest, I would have loved to stay there a little longer, as the tour only lasted for 1 hour.

This being said, I do think the Kakum Canopy Walk is worth it. It is a unique experience high up in the Ghanaian trees.

In Ghana we are very friendly, you can tour on your own as a foreigner. When you get to cape coast , you will arrange for a taxi to take your there . The price to Kakumdo various but don’t pay more than 120 cedis for fare …. If you would love to spend time I would love to show you around . Kakum National Park

Located just 30km north of Cape Coast, Kakum National Park is one of Ghana's most famous parks. This 357km² national park consists of undisturbed coastal forest and is home to Africa's only rainforest canopy walkway. This canopy walkway is one of only a dozen or so such walkways in the world. Walking tours through the park offer the opportunity to spot much of Ghana's indigenous plant life, as well as many types of birds and butterflies. However, due to the number of visitors at the main entrance and the canopy walkway, game sightings are rare and can only occur when well into the park. The first 200 meters along the forest floor under the dense canopies are a great time to look at the different sights on the ground before taking the canopy walk to get a view of the top canopy. There are high chances of you getting sight of birds, white and black colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, blue monkeys plus the red tailed monkeys. The restricted age for this walk is six years and children should be accompanied by their parents or a guardian. Each person interested in taking a canopy walk must pay sixty dollars at the reception center. Canopy walking takes place all year long. Nyungwe forest receives a lot of rainfall all year long you are encouraged to carry a rain coat. It is also important for you to carry hiking boots however if you do not have a pair, you can hire them from the reception center. The walking sticks are provided to everyone for free. The hike is not difficult to undertake and has duration of just two hours.

Kakum Canopy Walk, Ghana

The amazing rope-bridges of the Kakum canopy takes holidaymakers into a world that is only dwelled in by birds and monkeys only. The tree canopy is situated in the dense tropical jungle of Kakum National Park and it was designed by two Canadians. They designed the canopy walkway to increase tourism traffic especially ecotourism to the unknown national park. They therefore designed a distinct feature that would make the park a tourist destination by setting up an elevated trail through the canopy. In 1995 this canopy walk was officially opened up to the public consisting of seven bridges that were suspended from the trees approximately 130 feet above the forest floor. Kirstenbosch Tree Canopy Walkway, South Africa

The Kirstenbosch tree canopy walkway is a fairly new tourist feature whose bridges were curved from steel and timber, and it winds its way through and across the Arboretum trees. The design of the bridge was inspired by the shape of a snake’s skeleton; in fact, it is locally known as ‘Boomslang’ which means ‘tree snake’. Amazingly, this is a low maintenance, raised walkway with minimal environmental impact. It takes the holidaymakers through an exploratory journey from the forest floor up through the trees and finally out above the canopy while providing stunning and different views of the forest at all the distinct levels. It provides beautiful aerial views of the nearby mountains, cape flats as well as Gardens.

The canopy walkway is a narrow, slender 130 meters long path which has a few wide view-point places and it lightly winds its way through the canopy in a discreet almost non noticeable way. We will also visit several of the country's national parks, including Kakum Forest with its spectacular canopy walkway, ideal for providing access to a range of canopy dwellers. In addition to many world-class species, Kakum Forest hosts a remarkable array of hornbills: the rare Black-casqued, Yellow-casqued, and Brown-cheeked, both Red-billed and Black Dwarf, and White-crested! We'll also visit Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary, critical in conserving another fragment of the sorely endangered West African primary lowland forest; nearby Atewa reserve, conserving forest that holds additional species including Blue-moustached Bee-eater, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, and Red-cheeked Wattle-eye; the drier savannas at Shai Hills; and Mole National Park, where White-throated Francolin, Forbes's Plover, Long-tailed and Standard-winged nightjars, Stone Partridge, and Lavender Waxbill are possible as well as some big game including African Elephant.

This year we are avoiding the two-day return drive to the far north, as we have another good site for Egyptian Plover on the White Volta near Mole, saving us much travel time. We have instead added a day to Mole.

Our tour this year again visits the large forest block at Ankasa in the far west, on the border with Ivory Coast, with a new forest site at Nsuta en route promising additional exciting species including perhaps White-crested Tiger-Heron, Spot-breasted Ibis, and African Piculet. Camping is no longer required, and we will use simple hotels at both sites. Targets there include Hartlaub's Duck, Congo Serpent Eagle, Shining-blue and White-bellied kingfishers, Cassin's and Black spinetails, Rufous-sided Broadbill, as well as Forest Robin, Yellow-bearded Greenbul, and three species of bristlebill. En route out we can expect both Mouse-colored and Reichenbach's sunbirds and maybe Orange Weaver.

One of the latest additions to the park is two horses that offer patrons the opportunity to ride through the park.

Getting there (location)

The 40-acre forest reserve that hosts the Aboretum which belongs to the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council who leased it to a mining firm in the early twentieth century for surface mining but later given to another company known as African Products Department for rubber and cocoa plantations in 1917.

After the company left, two British bought the park on which they built a guest house in 1935. The guesthouse is currently serving as the official residence for the Vice Chancellor of the University College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies; an institution established by the Okyehene, Amoatia Ofori Opanin II .

In 1946, the facility was then acquired by the Plant Genetic Resource and Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) which has been managing it ever since.

The forest reserve has some of the rare tree species including Garcinia Kola, known locally as Twepea, reputed for its health benefits. Garcinia kola is said to be used in many tropical countries to fight infectious diseases and also known to possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiviral properties.

Other tropical tree species found at the centre include Okure, mostly used for dugout canoes as well as the Alpha and Omega trees used for the local sponge (sapowie).
