Make Home Care Personal To Your Loved One

As more countries open up, many Singaporeans are excitedly making holiday plans after close to three years. However, with all the uncertainty regarding outbreaks and government regulations, you may be facing turmoil on whether to book your flight and accommodations, especially if they are non-refundable.

The good news is, travel insurance policies now cover Covid-19-related disruptions. Many also provide compensation if you or your loved ones are diagnosed with Covid-19 before, during, or after the trip, so you can have peace of mind as you book your next vacation.

How to choose the best travel insurance with Covid-19 coverage

With the myriad of options available, how do you choose the best travel insurance with Covid-19 coverage?

Here are 5 key factors you should look out for to help you make an informed decision:

1. Price range

Depending on your destination country, travel duration, and a number of other factors, insurance premiums can range from tens of dollars to several hundreds. It is always best to find a balance between the cost of premium and the coverage you need.

2. Coverage

A typical travel insurance covers the following:

  • Overseas medical expenses, including treatment, evacuation and repatriation
  • Death and total and permanent disability (TPD)
  • Missing or lost baggage
  • Flight delays and cancellations
  • Trip cancellation

Pay extra attention to the coverage for overseas medical expenses. Most domestic insurance do not cover overseas expenses, which can easily cost upwards of thousands of dollars in the unfortunate event of a medical emergency. The cost of medical expenses may also vary greatly depending on your destination, so be sure to take that into consideration.

Depending on your itinerary and purpose of travel, you may choose to add extra coverage. For example, if you are an adrenaline junkie, consider getting a plan with adventure and sports coverage.

In the current pandemic situation, it is highly recommended to ensure your plan includes Covid-19 coverage. Covid-19 coverage typically includes the following benefits if you or your family members are diagnosed with Covid-19, or if you are affected by a related disruption:

  • Medical expenses
  • Hospitalisation allowance
  • Quarantine allowance
  • Trip postponement
  • Trip disruption
  • Trip curtailment
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation

3. Reliability of provider

Misinformation and fraud is rampant these days, and making sure your insurance provider is reliable is key to avoid being scammed. There are a few steps you can take to ensure the reliability of your insurance provider, such as checking that the agent is authorised by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), requesting for a receipt, and ensuring the details on the policy document is accurate.

The safest option is to go with a reputable insurance provider that has a great track record so that you can have peace of mind and be confident that your insurance provider has your back should you face any issues overseas.

4. Ease of claims

Often, you may discover travel insurance plans with similar coverage but vastly different costs. While it is tempting to go with the more affordable option, make sure to check the fine print and reviews first. It could be that the company has a tedious and lengthy claim process or highly restrictive rules in the fine print that results in many claims being denied. These days, some insurers also provide a paperless claim process for a more seamless and fuss-free experience.

5. Additional features

Depending on the insurance plan and provider, there may be value-added services and features that you may find useful. For example, some insurance providers provide a 24/7 global medical assistance hotline to connect you with medical treatment and transportation while overseas. Others have an app where you can easily find your policy details, file and track claims, locate nearby medical facilities, police stations, or embassies, and even access medical translation functionalities.

If you find these additional features helpful, keep a look out for them when purchasing your travel insurance plan.

Supporting Your Family and Providing Care from Afar

Planning to take a holiday, but worried of leaving your elderly parents at home alone? Homage can help.

Apart from being able to assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) like changing and cooking to nursing procedures, our Care Pros are also able to provide respite care to accompany your loved ones to their medical appointments or provide primary care in the interim.

Top 8 travel insurance plans with Covid-19 coverage

Depending on the country you are visiting, you may have to meet the mandatory Covid-19 travel insurance requirements to enter. For example, Singapore requires all inbound short-term visitors to have travel insurance with a minimum coverage of $30,000 for Covid-19-related medical expenses.

Here are the estimated premium and Covid-19 coverage of different travel insurance policies for a 7-days trip to most destinations worldwide:

Do note that the numbers above are for the most basic plan offered by each travel insurance provider. Many of them also offer plans with higher coverage, but of course have higher premiums as well.

1. FWD Premium

FWD offers affordable travel insurance plans with Covid-19 coverage. At $51.60 for a week-long trip to most destinations including the USA, FWD Premium has one of the lowest premiums in this list, but its coverage is also limited to only the bare minimum.

The Covid-19 insurance, which you have to purchase as an add-on to the FWD Premium plan, covers:

  • Medical expenses : Up to $200,000 while overseas or after returning to Singapore
  • Hospitalisation allowance : $50 per day for up to 14 consecutive days while overseas, $100 per day for up to 14 days after returning to Singapore
  • Trip cancellation : Up to $5,000 for non-refundable costs, for up to 30 days before the trip
  • Trip disruption : Up to $5,000
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation : Up to $200,000

The good thing about the FWD Premium travel insurance policy is that the medical expenses and hospitalisation allowance benefits are applicable for up to 14 days after your return, which not all plans offer.

2. Klook x MSIG Lite Plan

Another affordable travel insurance plan with Covid-19 coverage is the Klook x MSIG Lite Travel Insurance . At only $34.40 for a week-long trip to Thailand and up to $88 for a trip to the United States, its premium is comparable to FWD’s, but their Covid-19 coverage differs.

Covid-19 travel insurance coverage:

  • Medical expenses : Up to $100,000 while overseas
  • Hospitalisation allowance : $100 per day for up to 14 days while overseas, with maximum limit of $350
  • Quarantine allowance : $100 per day for up to 14 days while overseas, with maximum limit of $350
  • Trip cancellation : Up to $2,500
  • Trip curtailment : Up to $2,500
  • Evacuation and repatriation : Unlimited

While MSIG provides an overseas quarantine allowance, its payouts for hospitalisation allowance, medical expenses, as well as trip cancellations or disruptions, are lower compared to FWD.

Importantly, do take note that the Covid-19 cover will cease immediately after your return to Singapore, and the plan covers a trip duration of up to 30 days only, with no extension available.

If you are on a tight budget and don’t mind the basic coverage, consider getting this plan.

3. AIG Travel Guard Basic

For a comprehensive plan that already incoporates Covid-19 coverage, consider the  AIG Travel Guard Basic . Under this policy, a week-long trip to  Japan would incur a premium of $68.

  • Medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and repatriation  : Up to $50,000 for those below 70 years old, up to $25,000 for children and those above 70 years old
  • Quarantine allowance : $50 per day for up to 14 days while overseas
  • Travel cancellation : Up to $2,500
  • Travel postponement : Up to $500

While this plan offers decent coverage, it is missing a few elements, namely payouts for hospitalisation allowance, pre-departure changes to your trip, and even if you decide to return to Singapore early.

For better overall coverage, you have the option of upgrading to the Standard, Enhanced, or Supreme plans. However, do note that while these plans have higher compensation for the existing benefits, they do not provide additional benefits like hospitalisation allowance.

4. Allianz Single Trip Bronze

Rather than an add-on, Allianz incorporates Covid-19 coverage into its existing travel insurance plans. This means that while its medical expense coverage is significantly higher than the other plans above, it doesn’t provide payouts for travel delays, or allowance for hospitalisation and quarantine due to Covid-19.

You can get the Allianz Single Trip Bronze plan at $49 for a week-long trip to Thailand, or $112 if you are travelling to the USA.

  • Emergency medical and dental expenses : Up to $200,000 for those below 70 years old, up to $50,000 for those above 70 years old
  • Travel cancellation : Up to $5,000
  • Emergency transportation : Unlimited

For those who are looking for a more comprehensive plan, including personal accident and trip interruption coverage, Allianz also provides two other travel insurance plans: Silver and Platinum.

At the time of updating (9 Nov 2022), Allianz is also offering 12% off their travel insurance if you use the promo code “travel12”.

5. AXA SmartTraveller Essential

Since 1 February 2021, the AXA SmartTraveller  plans have been updated to better suit Singaporeans’ travel needs. The most basic plan, AXA SmartTraveller Essential , costs $157.02 for a week-long trip to most countries and includes the following Covid-19 travel insurance coverage:

  • Medical expenses : Up to $75,000 overseas, and up to $37,500 in Singapore
  • Hospitalisation allowance : $100 per day, up to a limit of $1,000
  • Quarantine allowance : $50 per day, up to a limit of $350 overseas and $350 in Singapore
  • Trip cancellation : Up to $1,000
  • Trip postponement : Up to $500
  • Trip curtailment or rearrangement : Up to $2,000

While the Covid-19 medical expense coverage for the Essential plan is considered low compared to the other plans on this list, AXA covers medical costs incurred within 90 days of your trip, which is quite generous duration-wise. For a higher coverage, you may want to consider upgrading to the Comprehensive plan, which covers up to $150,000 for Covid-19 medical treatment.

Another perk of the AXA SmartTraveller plan is their flexibility when it comes to claims for trip curtailment, which includes situations where a family member passes on due to Covid-19 or when there is a Covid-19 outbreak at the destination country.

6. NTUC Income Classic

For a week-long trip to most destinations, the NTUC Income Classic plan costs $149. On top of personal accident coverage, the plan includes the following Covid-19 travel insurance coverage:

  • Medical expenses : Up to $250,000 while overseas
  • Quarantine allowance : $100 per day while overseas, capped at $1,400
  • Trip cancellation : Up to $5,000
  • Trip curtailment : Up to $5,000
  • Trip disruption : Up to $2,000
  • Emergency transportation : Up to $150,000

All NTUC Income travel insurance policies bought online now include Covid-19 coverage for the first 90 days of each trip. However, do take note of the exclusions, as they do not cover travel inconveniences caused by border closures and government advisories.

For increased coverage, you have the option to choose NTUC Income’s Deluxe or Preferred travel insurance plans. Alternatively, if you are looking for a travel insurance policy that covers pre-existing conditions, NTUC Income is also one of the few providers that offers it. Their Enhanced PreX Travel Insurance starts from $194 for a week-long trip.

At the time of updating (9 November 2022), there is also an ongoing 40% promotion for all single-trip travel insurance policies bought online.

7. Sompo Essential

The Sompo Essential plan costs $129 for a week-long trip to most countries worldwide, and includes the following Covid-19 travel insurance coverage:

  • Overseas medical expenses : Up to $200,000
  • Medical expenses in Singapore : Up to $5,000
  • Hospitalisation allowance : $100 per day while overseas, capped at $3,000
  • Quarantine allowance : $50 per day while overseas, capped at $700
  • Trip postponement : Up to $5,000
  • Trip disruption : Up to $1,000
  • Emergency medical evacuation : Up to $500,000
  • Repatriation : Up to $30,000

In terms of breadth of coverage, the Sompo Essential plan has most of the Covid-19 benefits that other plans offer as well. Furthermore, the trip cancellation, postponement, and curtailment benefits apply not only when you contract Covid-19, but also when your travel companion(s) who are also insured by Sompo are infected.

However, do note that Sompo only covers Covid-19-related medical expenses for a period of up to 45 days (or until the maximum limit is reached), starting from your first day of treatment. Any medical expense incurred after 45 days will not be covered.

If you would like a more comprehensive coverage, there is the option to upgrade to the Sompo Superior plan.

At the time of updating (9 November 2022), Sompo is running a promotion for its single-trip Covid-19 insurance plans. Purchase your policies at 25% off till 4 December 2022.

8. Singlife Travel Lite

Singlife offers three plans with different levels of coverage: Travel Lite, Travel Plus, and Travel Prestige. The Singlife Travel Lite plan is the most affordable of the three, at $77.93 for a week-long trip to most destinations worldwide.

  • Medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation : Up to $250,000 while overseas
  • Medical expenses in Singapore : Up to $10,000
  • Trip cancellation : Up to  $5,000
  • Trip interruption : Up to $1,000

While the Singlife Travel Lite plan—the most basic of the three—has quite a low coverage, the benefits of the other two plans are comparable to the rest on the list and include overseas quarantine allowance of up to $2,000.

Additionally, MINDEF/MHA and POGIS policyholders can enjoy up to 46% off single-trip plans and 30% off multi-trip plans.

While we have provided a brief summary of the pros and cons of various travel insurance plans, remember to also read the fine print before making a decision to make sure the plan is right for you.

What to do if you get Covid-19 during or after your trip?

If you are diagnosed with Covid-19 or are affected by a related disruption during your trip, call your insurance provider immediately as they will be most familiar with the plan you have purchased and will be able to advise you accordingly. There may be steps you need to take within a fixed time frame (e.g. obtain an official quarantine order or a doctor’s letter) for the insurer to approve your claims, so you should call them once you are aware of the diagnosis or disruption. Most insurers should have a hotline that operates 24/7.

You will also have to submit your claim with supporting documents within the deadline (usually 30 days), so make sure that you always keep all receipts in an accessible place so you can submit claims on-the-go and do not have to wait till you are back in Singapore to process the claim.

Best Travel Insurance Plans in Singapore Benefits Coverage

Here are 3 simple steps to submit your travel insurance claim, get your supporting documents ready.

Most travel insurers require claims within 30 days. Submit via mail, WhatsApp, their app, or online portal to avoid policy breaches. Keep originals for 6 months in the event the travel insurance provider needs to sight them. Required documents often include personal info, medical reports, ownership proof, trip records, and reports (e.g., police, airline).

Fill in your details and attach your supporting documents in your submission

Log in to your insurer's claims app or portal. Fill in your info, and the necessary details for the claims (email address. policy number, departure date or policy purchase date), upload soft copies of your documents and submit. Alternatively, mail hard copies of your original documents.

Receive an acknowledgement email and await for settlement

After submitting, you'll receive an acknowledgment email. Your claim will be reviewed. For COVID-19-related claims, contact the provided hotline or email. Upon approval, your insurer will coordinate payments, often offering cashless reimbursement through PayNow or iBanking for speed and convenience.

Are Travel Aggregators Secure? Harder to Claim From?

Travel aggregators let you easily compare flights, hotels, travel insurance and more. But are they secure? Difficult to claim from? We answer your questions.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Cancelled Flights?

Not always! While all travel insurance policies have a "Trip Cancellation" benefit, you can only claim for this if it's for an insured event, such as a serious illness or accident, or unforeseen events such as riots or natural disasters. However, different insurers exclude different scenarios, so it's best to read the policy wording carefully. The following are types of flight cancellations that are NOT covered by travel insurance.

Flight Cancellation Due to Known Event

Flight cancellations due to events which are already made known as public knowledge are not covered by travel insurance, as you are expected to have known about these at the point of buying your tickets. However, if you bought your flights and activated your travel insurance before they became public knowledge, you might still be able to make a claim.

Flight Cancellation with Refund / Replacement

If your flight was cancelled but you were put on a replacement flight, or your fare was refunded, you will not be able to make a travel insurance claim under the trip cancellation benefit. In general, travel insurance is only for unrecoverable costs. However, you may claim for trip delay benefits, such as an extra night's accommodation or extra meals.

You Cancelled Your Own Flight / Trip

Travel insurance typically covers insured events that are beyond your control. If you are the one who changed your mind about your trip, you generally won't be able to claim anything - unless your insurer offers a "Cancellation for Any Reason" benefit. However, in public health emergencies like the COVID-19 outbreak, airlines usually waive the usual penalties for flight cancellations, out of goodwill.

We asked Singaporeans about flight disruptions, and they answered.

How Do I Choose The Best Travel Insurance?

When choosing travel insurance plans for your holiday or business trips, there are several factors to consider, depending on your priorities. Here are four simple steps to pick a suitable travel insurance plan.

Check general coverage

Instead of deciding solely by price, you should compare the benefits and reimbursement limits for common claims like medical expenses, trip cancellations, flight delays and baggage theft and/or damage.

Compare policy premiums

How much your travel insurance costs depends on your destination and length of stay. Most travel insurance companies have 2 to 3 tiers of plans at different price points, with varying comprehensiveness and reimbursement limits.

Special activities coverage

The breadth of coverage needed largely depends on your itinerary. For instance, if you’re planning to go skydiving, make sure you get a policy that covers aerial sports like MSIG’s TravelEasy® Standard, Elite and Premier plans. Or if you’re going golfing overseas, pick a policy that insures your equipment.

Consider the trip duration

This is one of the important determining factors of which kind of travel insurance you get. Single trip travel insurance plans are usually for short trips. If you’re the kind who travels far and for months, it might be worthwhile to consider buying annual travel insurance.

Unlike single trip travel insurance, annual travel insurance often charges a flat premium and insures you for an entire year of travel. It usually costs about $200 to $300 per year, which is more suitable for a frequent traveller who is probably going to travel overseas more than 7 or 8 times a year, at least.

Different Types Of Travel Insurance Coverage

Single trip plans.

If you’re thinking of only taking one or two trips in a year, single-trip travel insurance is probably more suitable for you. As the name suggests, single-trip insurance plans are made for individual travellers, and those who are travelling as families, who need travel coverage for a single trip or holiday, especially for long overseas trips (usually up to 180 days).

It makes more economic sense for those who don't travel very often, plus, single-trip insurance plans can be purchased easily online, with less time in planning and consideration as compared to annual multi-trip plans. But on the flip side, you’ll face the hassle of getting a new travel insurance policy every time you go on an overseas trip. For some, a single-trip insurance plan can get relatively expensive if the trips are short.

Annual Multi-trip plans

Annual travel insurance plans, which are also known as multi-trip travel insurance plans, are designed for those who travel several times in a year. The great thing about this kind of travel insurance is that you only need to do the purchase once, and you’re covered for the next 12 months. It is a good option if you’re a frequent traveller who intends to make many long trips or short weekend getaways abroad in a year.

Individual plans

Going solo as an occasional traveller or frequent traveller means that you’ll most likely need a single-trip individual travel insurance plan or an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan, depending on the frequency of travel.

Family plans

Family travel insurance plans usually cover you and the members of your family who travel with you on your trip, with a maximum number of adults and children to be insured per policy purchased. The people who are insured under a family travel insurance plan may comprise of you and your spouse, and/or your children or grandchildren.

You may want to consider purchasing a family travel insurance plan if you are travelling with your family and thinking of getting a single policy for your family members who are travelling with you, as getting a family travel insurance plan can be more cost-effective than getting separate single trip plans for each family member. What if you and your loved ones are travelling very often as a family? Some travel insurers also offer annual multi-trip travel insurance for families who are frequent travellers.

Single-trip or Annual multi-trip plan - Which one should you pick?

Now that we've detailed out what the different types of travel insurance plans are, it’ll be easier for you to make a decision. If not, here are some examples to help you understand better.

Joshua flies frequently in and out of the country for his business trips. As he works as a legal advisor, his job requires him to travel between Singapore and Thailand twice or once a month. Each trip will last for about a week. In this case, multi-trip travel insurance works best for him as he wouldn't have to keep getting travel insurance before every trip.

Lisa and Amanda are university friends planning to take a long post-graduation trip to Australia. They seldom travel and even if they did, they go on overseas vacations once a year with their own families. For them, the single travel insurance policy is a more suitable choice Australia .

What Do Travel Insurance Plans Cover?

While pricing is a an important factor when comparing travel insurance plans, other features such as overseas medical coverage, trip cancellation coverage and many other related aspects are as important. These benefits and the extent of coverage for each type of benefit usually varies from insurer to insurer. Here are a few aspects you’ll want to look out for when it comes to choosing a suitable travel insurance with adequate coverage .

Overseas medical expenses

In the event you get diagnosed with some sort of unexpected disease, you’ll be able to claim for the necessary and reasonable overseas medical costs incurred within a certain number of days of your trip (usually 90 days) up to the limit as specified according to your selected plan. For some plans there are also tiered coverage limits for different age groups.

In-hospital cash overseas or allowance

Reimbursements for in terms of cash for hospital stays is another benefit that many insurers include in their plans now, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Emergency medical evacuation and emergency medical repatriation

This is one of the fundamental aspects of every coverage plan. Any costs incurred for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation (including repatriation of mortal remains back to Singapore) that are related to your severe injury/illness diagnosis will be covered.

Keep in mind to have someone on your behalf to contact the insurer’s emergency service to provide your full name, dates of trip, NRIC/FIN number, policy number, name of the place and the telephone number that your insurance provider can reach you, as well as the nature of help required during the emergency, in case you are unable to do so during the emergency.

Trip cancellation/alteration/interruption/delay

Trip cancellations, postponements, delays, and interruptions are often covered if you as the traveller or you relatives travelling with you are diagnosed with a severe illness/get severely injured before the date of departure, subject to terms and conditions.

Pre-existing conditions

This benefit is not commonly included in most travel insurance plans, but currently there are several insurers providing such plans and they include MSIG TravelEasy® Pre-Ex, Income Insurance Enhanced PreX® (formally known as Income) and Etiqa Pre-Ex. The premiums are higher than regular plans, but they provide overseas medical expenses that cover pre-existing conditions.

Travel Insurance Claims

How do travel claims work.

Before you make a claim from your travel insurance provider, there are several important things to take note of, whether it is for claims related to your COVID-19 diagnosis, loss of baggage, trip cancellation, or other reasons. These include knowing what type of plan you purchased, when did the incident/illness occur (pre-trip, during-trip or post-trip), what belongings or items to claim for, and who are involved.

Ultimate Guide to Best Travel Insurance in Singapore

Travel Insurance Promotion

It’s clear that Singaporeans love to travel outside the country, whether it’s in the Asian continent or to western countries. Although Singapore is one of the developed countries in the world, it’s a small island which means the Singaporeans prefer to travel abroad.

To ensure that they’re protected during these trips, most of them are turning to travel insurance companies for cover. And even though more and more of them are buying travel insurance, they are also very selective with what they are choosing. So, what is travel insurance and why is this policy plan important? To help you understand the basics of travel insurance policy, here is a comprehensive overview.

Types of Travel Insurance

So, you have heard about travel insurance and you are keen to buy one, right? But the problem is, which type of coverage is good for you? You don’t want to get something that won’t fully cater to your needs. So, it’s important to grasp the differences between various policies. Travel insurances can be categorised depending on several factors:

  • The Frequency of Travelling
  • The Number of People Travelling
  • Where are You Travelling To?
  • Special Cases that Require Personalisation

1. The Frequency of Travelling

Single-Trip: this is usually just one round trip i.e. from and back to Singapore. It’s suitable for those who don’t travel frequently. For instance, those who take trips once or twice a year.

One-way Insurance: as much as most Singaporeans love the round trip cover, some simply need one-way travel insurance. This could be when you are travelling abroad and not planning to come back to Singapore any time soon. It’s also suitable for those who are migrating or moving back to their mother countries. If you are using this type of insurance, the coverage starts shortly before you leave Singapore. It also stops shortly after you reach your destination. However, if there are transits to other countries, you will still get covered. But you mustn’t leave the transit area because anything that happens outside that place will not be covered.

Annual Insurance Cover: some people take numerous trips every year. They include businessmen, social media influencers, and others. These trips need to start and end in Singapore. Taking a multi-trip cover will effectively protect you every time you travel throughout the year. However, this does not mean that you will get a limitless cover. It all depends on the number of trips you expect to take in a year. It’s also worth noting that your travel destinations will greatly influence the cost of the insurance. For instance, buying annual travel insurance for the Asian continent will be much cheaper compared to other continents. So, if you are travelling worldwide, you are definitely going to spend more.

2. The Number of People Travelling

Are you a solo traveller or frequently take your family/friends along with you during your trips? It’s possible to choose an insurance plan depending on the number of travellers:

Single-person travel insurance: this is the most preferred choice for most travellers. It’s a great choice, especially if you want to fully take care of your personal affairs. It is also very cheap because it involves only one traveller.

Group Plan: it covers a group of colleagues or friends who travel together. However, it’s worth noting that each group plan has a specific number of people. This type of insurance normally comes with a discount because of the large number of participants.

Family Plan: it’s suitable for adults who travel with kids. This type of insurance offers a single premium for all the members of the family.

3. Where are You Travelling To?

Are you travelling locally, within the Asian continent or overseas? Many people think that you only need travel insurance if you are going abroad. The truth is that anything can happen even when you are travelling in Singapore. So, it’s important to look for a policy that adequately covers your basic needs.

If you are travelling internationally, then you need an extensive cover. This is because different countries have different official languages, cultures, laws, and public systems. Because there are high chances you might be familiar with them, you may end up delaying, finding it difficult to communicate or falling into the wrong hands of the law. So, it’s important to ensure that the type of cover you choose can cover your destination.

4. Special Cases that Require Personalisation

The basic travel insurance plan for most Singaporeans cover common things like flight delays, sickness, loss of luggage, and flight cancellations. However, there are some instances where you might need the insurance company to cover specific things for instance:

Pregnant Women

Most insurance providers don’t have basic policies for mothers-to-be. And in case there is a policy for them, there are several conditions which the expectant woman has to meet. For instance, some insurers won’t cover a pregnant woman if they are in their first trimester. They consider them as a high risk. On the other hand, some won’t cover those who are close to their due date.

Persons with Disability

At the basic level, many travel insurances will exclude travel cover for people with disabilities. However, you can still get coverage if you request for a customised policy.

Pre-existing Medical Condition

If you have a pre-existing medical condition like heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, you cannot make claims under the basic medical cover. There are very few companies in Singapore that offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions. So, in case you are suffering from any of these health conditions, you may need to make personalised claims.

Rental Car Excess

Are you going on a driving holiday and using a rental car? As much as you might be the most careful driver, accidents occur. Travelling across a harsh or unfamiliar terrain can also cause damage to the car. However, there are insurance policies for rental excess coverage. They cover payments the car rental company might need for damage.

Senior travellers

They are considered to be high-risk and normally receive lower benefits. In Singapore, senior travellers are those above the age of 70 years.

Other add-ons include:

  • Specific events such as weddings, tournaments etc.
  • If you are going to engage in certain high-risk activities like bungee jumping, sky diving, and skiing, etc.

Types of Risks Travel Insurance Cover

Companies have a huge range of insurance covers which cover basic and personalised things. There are a lot of things that could go wrong while you are away. Some of the things are significantly expensive and you may end up using lots of money. Insurance companies offer clients various types of risk coverage to ensure that their different needs are covered.

Medical Cover

This is one of the most common risks that insurances cover. These companies fully understand that it’s possible to fall sick while you are travelling. Besides that, injuries and accidents are some of the things that you may come across. Although it’s possible to treat mild everyday diseases such as headaches, some of them may require admission or even surgery. The total costs involved in such scenarios are usually extremely high, especially if you are in a western country.

According to a research study, it costs less than $1000 to stay in an Asian hospital for a day. On the other hand, it may cost almost £4,000 if you are in the UK. So, what happens if you are admitted for several days? Well, this means you can quickly end up draining all your savings within a few days. But having medical treatment cover means that all your treatment costs will cover including surgery and dental treatment.

Note: sometimes a patient may want to be transferred back home. So, if you want to be taken back to Singapore, your cover will still pay for this. It should be noted that most Singaporeans travel to western and European countries a lot. Although these are developed countries with good healthcare systems, as a foreigner your charges may be significantly high.

Cancelled or Rescheduled Trips

This is a common phenomenon that happens a lot. Weather changes, insecurity, and political unrests are some of the reasons why your trip may be rescheduled or cancelled. Sometimes you may even fall sick or have serious commitments. However, these companies understand that travelling usually takes up lots of logistics. Most people spend days if not months just planning for one trip. So, what happens when an unavoidable circumstance pops up and you can’t travel on time?

If you have a rescheduled trip coverage, you will get reimbursed. However, be aware that this type of coverage is only effective when you are on or about to go for the trip. The insurer may provide you with money for hotel accommodation, meals, car rentals, and more.

Damage or Loss of Personal Items

Your bag can get lost or some of your personal belongings may get damaged. This type of coverage is essential for protecting your personal items. In case your luggage is destroyed, stolen, or lost during your trip, you will get a reimbursement. For instance, if there is a luggage delay, the company will give you money to buy the necessary items as you wait for the delivery. Some of the essential things that the insurance may cover include toiletries, clothes, and footwear.

Sudden Fold-Up of the Travel Urgency

Singapore’s travel industry is not strictly regulated. So, a travel agency can pop up and close down suddenly. This means that they may get away with your money as well as other vital information regarding your travel itinerary. But a policy that covers agent insolvency can easily provide you with an alternative. You will end up getting compensated the amount you had initially paid the travel agent.

Other Types of Travelling Risks and Add-Ons

The above-mentioned risks are the most basic. A lot of people tend to experience them than any other forms of risks. However, this does not mean that travel insurance companies don’t cover other types of risks. Some of the add-ons you can find include:

  • Interpreter and legal fees: in case you need a legal presentation or need an interpreter for a language barrier.
  • Repatriation: the policy covers the travelling costs involved in transferring your luggage or body back to your home country.
  • Emergency pay-outs: it’s normally remitted in case of emergencies such as a hostage situation or kidnapping.

Overall, there are several versatile insurance companies that accommodate the different needs of different clients. Some of them even have emergency travel hotlines which clients can use to make calls at any time wherever they are.

Travel Insurance Policy Packages

Most insurance companies in Singapore are versatile. So, they have several policy plans to ensure that the different needs of travellers are met. They normally include basic, enhanced, and superior coverage. Some of the areas which an insurance company may cover include:

  • Medical expenses in Singapore
  • Medical expenses overseas.
  • Travel inconvenience.
  • Accidental death and or permanent disablement.
  • Personal liability
  • Lifestyle coverage including burglary, rental car excess, and golfing.

Reasons to Buy Travel Insurance

It’s not possible to determine what might happen while you are away from home. Accidents and other mishaps may happen. Occasionally (if not frequently) we have heard of the unexpected things that have happened to other travellers. These things might also happen to you. So, what are some of the reasons why you should buy travel insurance? Why travel insurance is necessary to Singaporean travellers? CNA news reported: One in two Singaporeans are adventurous travellers, according to survey.

Medical Emergencies are Quite Expensive Abroad

It’s possible to suffer from infections as a result of climate change. Besides that, accidents and injuries may also happen. While it may be cheaper to treat any of these problems here, medical costs are quite high when you are abroad. Having medical insurance, however, can help to cover all these costs. So, you don’t have to worry about emptying your pockets.

Your Flight Might Get Cancelled

Flight cancellations, as well as rescheduling, are common occurrences. But we are all aware that a lot of people invest a lot of cash in purchasing flight tickets. So, what happens when your flight is rescheduled or cancelled? You will definitely end up losing a lot of cash. In some instances, you might end up getting stranded because these are some of the things you probably didn’t budget for. However, if you have travel insurance, it’s possible to completely or partially recoup your travelling costs. Your insurance may also be able to cover your stay in a hotel or the extra transport costs.

Your Passport Can Get Lost

You are in the middle of a vacation, workshop, or conference then you realise that your passport is lost. What are you going to do in such a scenario? There is nothing as draining as replacing a passport when you are away from home. But if you have a good plan, it will help to expedite the replacement process.

Your Baggage Can Get Lost or Delayed

Airlines can delay or even misplace your baggage with all your personal items. However, if you have such coverage, you will just relax. You can call your company to help recover the lost items. Most of these companies will quickly reimburse all the essential items that could’ve gotten lost.

Personal Liability

What if nothing happens to you but you end damaging someone’s property or hurting them? In case you are legally responsible for any of these, your insurance may be able to partially or fully cover personal liability expenses like legal fees.

Note: do not engage in hate speech, racial abuse, or criminal acts and expect your insurance to cover your legal expenses.

Emergencies Back at Home

Your home may be attacked by burglars, a loved one can fall sick or die, hence you might need to take care of such emergencies. You might want to curtail the trip but this means that you will end up losing money. But if you have a travel insurance plan, it can effectively take care of such situations by offering a refund for your tickets.

It’s Easy to Fall Prey of Attacks

As a foreigner, it’s very easy to get attacked by locals. You might end up getting falling into the hands of pickpockets or burglars. Being the target of this unpleasant intentions means that you end up losing your money, gadgets, and other valuables. A travel cover comes in handy in case such targeted events happen.

It Offers Peace of Mind

A lot of people normally get anxiety and sometimes even panic attacks when they think about travelling. This is normally as a result of fear that something may happen along the way and they may not be able to fully protect themselves. But having travel insurance gives you the much-needed peace of mind. I mean, you are already covered in case anything happens. This makes your trip more enjoyable and less stressful. You don’t have to worry about the extra expenses you will incur in case of a delay or cancellation. If your personal luggage is stolen or you fall sick, you can rest assured that you will be compensated.

When is The Perfect Time to Buy a Travel Policy?

You can buy insurance when you want. However, the best time is after you have booked your trip. This way, you will be able to fully maximize the coverage, if anything happens. Note that the insurance will only cover you after you have bought the policy. So, in case your trip is cancelled or scheduled, you can easily make your claims.

However, you can still enhance the coverage of your plan later on. This means that you can add other items such as accommodation and tours under the same insurance plan. It’s prudent that you buy a travel policy when you’ve already put your money at risk. For instance, once you buy a non-refundable air ticket, you have already put your money at risk in case the trip gets cancelled.

In Singapore, it’s possible to buy an insurance 18 months prior to the trip. Besides that, Singaporeans can still get a policy coverage a day prior to travelling. Note that sometimes travellers need to pay for their trips in instalments. Well, there are some companies that still offer travel insurance in such cases. All a person needs to do is to add the total cost of the trip.

Why It’s Important to Buy Travel Insurance Early

Life is unpredictable and so it’s only good for a person to get covered before they travel. Why would you want to insure your journey when you are late? Buying a policy early enough gives you enough free period to analyse if you need to make changes or not. This means that if you decide to cancel your trip, you will still get a full refund.

Buying Travel Insurance At the Last Minute

We all know that there are still procrastinators who love getting things at the last minute. So, it’s still possible to get a policy a day prior to travelling or depending on the insurer. But once you get to the airport or you have already arrived at your destination, then you won’t be able to buy one.

How to Get the Best Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance is now more common than ever. A lot of mishaps are happening. From plane crashes, topical diseases, to political unrests, all these have significantly increased the number of people seeking travel insurance. However, you need to be picky about what you choose. According to traveIinsuranceguide.sg, here is how you can choose the best policy.

1. Who is travelling?

Are you travelling alone, with kids, as a family, or with friends? Depending on the number of travellers, you can choose:

  • A single-person cover.
  • Single-parent family cover.
  • A family holiday insurance.
  • Couple travel insurance.

Note: carefully go the family policy cover to ensure that you understand how it works.

Essential Cover

Before going into deep details, check out first the basic cover. Does the policy accommodate standard coverage which usually includes medical costs, cancelled or delayed trips, and lost or misplaced luggage? If so, you can proceed to check other items.

2. Where are You Going?

Insurance policies are sometimes categorised depending on locations and they may include:

Note: if you are going to Europe, remember that some countries are not part of the European Union although they are still in Europe, e.g. Switzerland.

3. How long is the Trip?

In most cases, single and annual trip policies may cover:

4. How Often Do You Travel?

If it’s a one-time trip, you just need a single-trip policy. In case you are going to travel several times, then you need to get an annual cover.

5. What Type of Activity Will You be engaging in?

Are you on a business trip, vacation, or a study trip? Besides those, are you going to engage in high-risk activities bungee jumping, skating, or scuba diving? Considering all these will help you choose the right type of policy.

6. Do You Need a Customised Policy?

Are you sick, pregnant, or old? If so, then you might require a speciality policy cover.

How to Make Travel Insurance Claims

So, your flight has been scheduled, you are sick, or your luggage has got lost. What next? First, you need to have the necessary contact details to report the situation immediately. It’s worth noting that most insurance companies have stipulated reporting times for claims. So, you can only receive your claims if you made a report within the stipulated period.

You only need to fill the claims form but with the right details. In case there are supporting documents, make sure that you also provide them. For instance, if you are paid legal fees or medical fees, you may need to furnish the insurer with the necessary receipts. Alternatively, if you were robbed, you need to first contact the relevant authorities before the insurer.

Fill the Claims Form on Time

To be on the safe side, make sure that you make the claims within 7 days. Contact the insurer by email or phone call. They will advise you the necessary steps you need to take and if you need to involve the authorities.

Fill the Forms Correctly

When filling the claims forms, ensure that you provide accurate details. Outline clearly what you are making claims for. It should be noted that the claims procedure for medical costs isn’t the same as that for lost documents or theft.

Prepare the Relevant Documents

Sometimes you need to attach evidence for your claims. So, you must attach all the relevant documents to avoid all possible delays. Some of the documentation that you may need to successfully support your claims include:

Medical Documents

  • Medical bills or report.
  • Death certificate.
  • Motor accident report.

Trip Cancellation/Delay Documents

  • The original invoice for trip cancellation.
  • Original tour or vacation booking receipt.

Lost Documents or Money

  • Police report lodged within 24 hours.
  • Passport replacement costs.

Lost Personal Effects

  • An irregularity/damage/loss report from the airline
  • Photographs of lost or damaged items

Submit Your Claim

Make sure that you make your submission within the allotted time and then wait for a response. You will get contacted with 2-3 days. In case there is a need for more information, you will be contacted within 7 working days. If your claim is approved, you will receive your payments within 1 to 3 business days.

Prepare to Make Your Appeal

What if you make claims and the insurer fails to give you your claims? Well, it’s possible that they may have misjudged your circumstances. So, you need to prepare an appeal. Make sure that you add extra information which will make your claim successful.

Possible Exceptions for Claims

As much as insurance is supposed to cover accidents or things that might go wrong while you are travelling, you will not be always compensated. It’s, therefore, important for you to carefully read the details of your travel insurance. This will help you understand what is covered and the exceptions. Generally, you will not receive claims for the following:

  • In case you are injured under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • If you need medical insurance as a result of a special pre-existing condition that is not under the policy. If you are suffering from a pre-existing medical condition, you need to buy a speciality medical cover for it. Otherwise, you will not receive your claims.
  • Engaging in unlawful or illegal activities such as theft, racial abuse, etc.
  • Travelling to a destination that’s considered highly volatile. According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry , there are countries which are dangerous to Singaporeans. They include Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan, Syria , and Iraq among others. In case there is a travel advisory issued for a certain country and you still went ahead and travelled to that destination, rest assured that you will receive nothing.
  • Failure to adequately protect yourself and your belongings. This is usually considered as negligence and you will be allocated nothing. For instance, leaving your belongings in high-risk areas, engaging in fights that can result in injuries, etc.

There is no doubt that more and more Singaporeans are now buying travel insurance than before. People don’t want to deal with the expensive costs, anxiety, and worry that comes with unexpected events. But before you buy any insurance cover, it’s important that you compare what different sites have to offer. A comparison overview allows you to buy a policy that suits your needs and budget. Besides that, you will be able to understand what makes brands unique.

Take your time, match your needs with the type of coverage you are interested in, then proceed to make your payments. There is definitely no better way to travel stress-free other than buying travel insurance policy plan.

11 Best Annual Travel Insurance from $270 You Can Buy Online (2022)

moneysmart

“ Annual travel insurance ? Isn’t that for frequent flyers, like those investment bankers and C-level executives?” you ask. Actually, I’d argue that it’s something that’s very worthwhile for many regular Singaporeans to buy.

We’re always whining about how we have no time to travel, we’re so burnt out from this rat race, life in Singapore is so boring, blah blah. But the fact is that Singaporeans are an extremely privileged bunch. According to stats, the national travel average is  5.2 times a year.

That makes us one of the most well-travelled nations in the world, side by side with those tall, handsome Scandinavians who are absolutely swimming in money and annual leave days. Well, then Miss Rona happened and turned our lives upside down.

After two years of living in a pandemic, the borders are finally opening up and if you’re packing those luggages for multiple trips in the coming year to finally quench your thirst for wanderlust, buying annual travel insurance will save you money  and it’ll also save you the mad scramble of buying insurance online just moments before your plane takes off.

  • Best Travel Insurance Plans
  • I’m travelling to multiple countries – Buy Annual or Single?
  • Is Annual Travel Insurance cheaper than Single Trip?
  • Annual Travel Insurance is more convenient
  • Does Annual Travel Insurance have higher coverage?
  • How to choose Annual Travel Insurance?

1. Best Annual Travel Insurance Plans

“But I’m so busy travelling! Where got time to compare all the different annual travel insurance plans?” you wail.

Luckily for you, I’m paid to do just that. Here are the most affordable annual travel insurance plans that you can. After reviewing some 20 insurance providers in Singapore, I’ve shortlisted the best annual travel insurance plans for the average Singaporean traveller. A point to note: not all of the annual travel insurance plans include Covid-19 benefits.

2. Travelling to Multiple Countries – Buy Annual or Single Trip?

Regardless of how many countries you visit, it will still be considered a “single trip” as long as you’re leaving Singapore and returning to Singapore only once. When buying travel insurance, you’ll usually be asked to indicate a single country.

Which country should you indicate?

  • Select the country where you’ll be staying the longest
  • Indicate the furthest country you’ll be visiting
  • Find out your insurance company’s country list
  • Find out which countries travel insurance doesn’t cover
  • Are you going to be travelling regularly?

This makes sense because you’ll want to be covered at least in the country where you’re spending the most time.

If you’re going to be spending a week or more in Japan, for example, but also dropping by Bangkok or Hong Kong for a day to visit friends, you’ll still want to indicate that you’re buying travel insurance for Japan .

But what if you’re going to be spending most of your travel in KL, but making a short trip to Shanghai for a day meeting?

If you’re only going to be spending a day in China, and a month in Malaysia in the same trip, it might make sense at first to buy insurance for the whole month of travel, and indicate Malaysia as your destination country. This reduces your premiums significantly, since indicating China would mean you’d be paying more for coverage you don’t need.

However, if you can afford to spend a bit more, then it would be good to indicate the furthest country you’re visiting. After all, the last thing you want is for you to lose your baggage on that one day you’re in China, and then find out you’re not covered because you decided to save a few dollars.

3. Is Annual Trip Cheaper than Single Trip?

If you’re travelling so often that the pages of your passport looks like the scribblings of a child’s colouring book, it’s a given that buying  annual travel insurance  is cheaper in the long run.

For a simple comparison, one of the cheapest annual travel insurance plan with worldwide coverage from FWD costs you about  $345 a year .

This may seem like a hefty amount at first, but consider this: a single-trip travel insurance plan will cost about $76 a week  in the United States too.

That means buying single-trip insurance for 3 or 4 overseas trips in a year can cost you the same as an unlimited number of trips on an annual insurance plan.

Do note that the cost of yearly travel insurance depends mainly on the furthest country you’re planning to visit that year.

Naturally, restricting your coverage to countries in Asia, for example, would be cheaper that having coverage worldwide. This means that if you do have to travel outside Asia, you will need to think about buying a single-trip policy, which will not only add on to your costs, but also means adding on to your concerns before you travel.

4. Annual Travel Insurance is more convenient

Most annual travel insurance plans on the market today are for unlimited trips within a year-long timeframe, as long as each trip does not exceed 90 days .

This means, with an annual travel insurance plan, you can travel at any time without the hassle of finding the cheapest travel insurance each time you plan to leave the country.

5. Does Annual Travel Insurance have higher coverage?

Considering that an annual travel insurance policy covers you globally, you are covered wherever you travel to within this time frame.

However, once you drill down into the specific benefits for each travel inconvenience or emergency, an  annual travel insurance  technically does NOT provide more coverage than single-trip.

Let’s use NTUC Income’s travel insurance plan as an example. Here are the claim limits for the single and annual plans respectively:

It’s also important to note that you check for Covid-19 coverage before you purchase your annual travel insurance. While most insurance plans now include Covid-19 coverage, there are others that require you to purchase it as an add-on.

6. How To Choose Annual Travel Insurance?

There are a few factors you should consider before you take the plunge.  Annual travel insurance  is, after all, a year-long commitment and you can’t switch providers midway just because you buay song .

Here are some basics to know before you click “buy”.

Worldwide coverage: Always choose worldwide coverage so you’re not limited to specific regions when you travel. Even if you don’t have anything planned yet, you just never know where 2023 will take you.

Individual vs group plans: Generally annual travel insurance is a personal decision, but do note that some insurance providers give you better rates if you buy as a couple. (You don’t necessarily have to travel together.)

Basic vs upper-tier plan: With travel insurance, you don’t want to be too giam and just stick to the cheapest plan offered by the provider. Instead, consider both basic and mid-tier plans for the best mix of affordability and coverage.

Medical & emergency coverage: You might end up travelling to expensive countries, so make sure to buffer against high healthcare costs. Go for overseas medical expense limits of at least $300,000 if possible, and at least $1 million for emergency evacuation.

Covid-19 coverage:  While most single-trip insurance policies have expanded to offer Covid-19 benefits, the same cannot be said for the annual policies. Given that you’re paying for an entire year worth of coverage, do your due diligence in checking if the annual policy offers Covid-19 coverage.

Travel inconvenience coverage: You can get away with lower coverage for travel delays and such with single trip insurance, like if you’re going to Bali where the tourist infrastructure is strong and accommodation is plentiful. But you wouldn’t want to have to sleep at the airport in the US just because you can’t get enough compensation for a travel delay. So, pick only annual travel insurance with good coverage for travel inconvenience.

Adventure activities: Unlike single-trip plans where you can choose a plan that specifically covers such activities, your annual plan needs to cover anything you might end up doing in the course of the year. Even if you’re not very outdoorsy, your colleagues might talk you into learning to dive with them. You never know. So it’s best to be as unrestrictive as possible.

Comfort level: Finally, don’t commit to an annual travel insurance plan unless you’re REALLY comfortable with the policy wording, the claims process and the reputation of the brand (both for rendering emergency assistance and for settling claims).

What does travel insurance for singapore cover, can i tailor my travel insurance for singapore, what does travel insurance for singapore exclude, how much does travel insurance for singapore cost, how can i compare travel insurance for singapore, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Singapore has long been a holiday favourite for Australians, either as a stop-over city on the way to Europe or the Middle East or as base for exploring Asia. According to the latest figures from data portal, Statista, 566,000 Australians visited the country in 2022.

If you’re also planning to visit, travel insurance for Singapore can safeguard your trip against a number of potential mishaps, such as falling ill while away, losing your luggage and belongings or even needing to cancel the trip before it’s even begun. Singapore is a safe country, but the cost of medical care is high.  Find out more about how travel insurance for Singapore works below.

There are three main types of travel insurance policy for Singapore. These are:

  • Single trip: for a one-off trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore
  • Annual multi-trip : for more than one trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore or various destinations. This type of cover can work out more cost-effective than buying multiple single trip policies but not always so it’s best to compare both types of cover.
  • Long-stay/backpacker : for an extended stay in Singapore, of typically 60 or 90 days, or 12 or 18 months. Cover for 24 months may be available, from certain providers.

When applying for travel insurance online, you’ll first be asked to enter your holiday destination. Depending on the insurer, you’ll need to click on Singapore, Asia or Worldwide travel excluding the US and nearby destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada and Greenland. The latter option excludes a part of the world where medical costs are the highest, which in turn, bumps up the cost of cover. If you’re also planning to travel to the US, for example, there are separate worldwide policies that include it as a destination.

Insurers usually offer at least two or more types of travel insurance policy from basic or comprehensive cover and anything in between. Comprehensive policies offer the highest cover levels and widest range of benefits.

A key component of all travel insurance policies is emergency medical cover. You’ll find a comprehensive policy for Singapore will often offer an unlimited amount.

The standard of medical facilities and care in Singapore is similar to, or higher than in Australia, and the cost often much higher, so medical cover can prove a vital resource should you fall ill, or get injured, while away.

Note that in the case of an emergency, you’ll likely need to pay up-front first, and then reclaim the costs from your insurer, or confirm payment from your insurer with a hospital before it will provide treatment.

As standard, travel insurance for Singapore can also cover repatriation and emergency rescue, in severe medical cases, the loss or theft of your baggage and belongings and trip cancellation if you can no longer travel for reasons such as falling ill, suffering a bereavement or losing your job.

They will also likely include an array of other forms of protection, providing the most at comprehensive level. This includes cover for lost or stolen money, passports and documentation, missed departures, online fraud, and travel delay. The types of cover on offer, and cover limits, will vary between providers. You can find exactly what a policy includes in its product disclosure statement (PDS), which is usually found on an insurer’s website.

There are a number of ways you can ensure your policy fits your needs. Many insurers offer optional add-ons that you can purchase if you need specialised cover. These include insurance for gadgets (such as a smartphone or laptop), a cruise and playing golf.

If you’re thinking of participating in more high-octane activities, check your policy’s PDS. Many cover around 100 or so sports automatically. Cover for what an insurer classes as high-risk activities, such as skydiving, bungee jumping, outdoor rock climbing, and activities requiring a set of wheels, such as quad biking, may require purchasing an additional ‘sports pack’ for your policy.

While reading through a policy’s PDS, it’s crucial to also take note of any limitations of cover. These can differ between policies, but generally you can expect most insures to refuse claims relating to a pre-existing condition. This is a medical condition you had before taking out the policy. The insurer may not cover such conditions, or may refuse your claim if you did not declare your condition on applying for the policy.

An insurer is also unlikely to accept claims for an injury caused by taking part in a sport or activity where you did not wear the appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet, knee pads or a harness. Claims resulting from disorderly behaviour or being under the influence of drink or drugs will also likely be rejected.

It’s best to regularly check government advice for your destination, which it publishes on its Smartraveller website. This includes warnings about natural disasters, terrorism threats and pandemics. Visiting Singapore, or a part of the country, if the government puts it on its “do not travel” list, could invalidate your policy.

The amount you’ll need to pay for your travel insurance policy will depend on a range of factors. An insurer will consider your holiday destination, associated costs when travelling there and the length of time you’ll be travelling.

The price of a policy can rise for mature travellers and those with pre-existing conditions, as insurers view these travellers as more likely to claim on their policy.

To provide an idea of how much travel insurance for Singapore can cost, we ran quotes on the sites of the insurers we’ve rated the top five for travel insurance.

We used the profile of a family of four, aged 42, 40, 14 and 12, spending 13 to 26 May in the country, and assumed they have no pre-existing conditions, (although these providers do offer cover for pre-existing conditions should you need it).

We found basic cover ranged from around $106 to $202, while comprehensive cover started at around $241, with the most expensive policy costing just under $304.

Before choosing a policy, it’s important to shop around. An easy way to do this is to run quotes on the websites of various insurers and compare factors such as the type of cover a policy includes and cover levels against price.

To help you with your search, we’ve conducted some research and found our pick of the best comprehensive travel insurance policies .

Is travel insurance for Singapore worth it?

While travel insurance for Singapore isn’t mandatory, it can be considered a travel essential if you have no other means of covering emergency costs while away.

Emergency medical fees can easily stack up to thousands of dollars alone, and without travel insurance in place, you would have to cover them out of pocket. Travel insurance also can cover a number of eventualities that we often fail to consider, such as an airline, transport company, or accommodation provider going bust.

What is ‘excess’ in insurance?

An excess is a set amount you’ll be expected to pay on each approved claim. It’s usually levied per person on the policy, per event, per claim, but you can check the PDS for the specifics concerning your insurer. You usually can pick from a range of excess amounts, from $50 to $250 on average, when taking out a policy.

The more you choose to pay in excess, the lower your policy premium—the cost of your policy—typically will be, while paying less in excess will raise the cost. An excess is usually deducted from a claim amount, so you won’t need to pay for it out of pocket. However, it’s still crucial that you make sure it’s affordable.

Can I buy a policy while I’m in Singapore?

Some providers won’t cover a holiday if it’s already started. Others may cover you, but apply a waiting period of around 72 hours before you can claim.

The best time to take out travel insurance is as soon as you’ve booked your holiday, as you’ll be immediately covered for trip cancellation. Insurers are highly unlikely to consider claims resulting from something that happened before you took out the policy.

plans at an airport

Whether it’s a weekend getaway or taking the road less travelled on a month-long adventure , planning ahead is crucial to ensure a smooth and hassle-free trip.

An essential aspect of travel planning is purchasing travel insurance. With a plethora of options available, it’s tempting to opt for the cheapest travel insurance plan available. But is the cheapest always the best choice? Read on to learn how to make an informed decision when it comes to purchasing travel insurance and some scenarios where investing in a more expensive plan might be beneficial.

The Temptation of Cheap Travel Insurance

In today’s digital age, finding cheap travel insurance is just a few clicks away. Many budget-friendly options promise adequate coverage at a fraction of the cost of premium plans. While saving money is always a plus, it’s essential to understand what you’re getting for your money.

What does cheap travel insurance typically cover.

flight delay airport travel

Cheap travel insurance plans often offer basic coverage, which may include:

  • Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Baggage loss or delay
  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation

While these coverages are essential, they may have limitations in terms of coverage amounts, exclusions, and deductibles. For instance, a cheap plan may have a low coverage limit for emergency medical expenses or exclude coverage for adventure sports or pre-existing medical conditions .

When is it worth investing in a more expensive plan, extended coverage and higher limits.

If you’re embarking on a high-value trip or travelling to a destination with high medical costs, investing in a more expensive travel insurance plan with higher coverage limits can literally be lifesaving if emergencies arise. Premium plans may provide:

  • Higher coverage limits for emergency medical expenses including evacuation
  • Coverage for adventure sports and activities
  • Additional benefits such as trip delay, missed connections, and rental car damage

Pre-existing medical conditions.

If you have pre-existing medical conditions , opting for a cheap travel insurance plan may not provide sufficient coverage. Many budget-friendly plans exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions or offer limited coverage, which can leave you vulnerable to significant out-of-pocket expenses in case of a medical emergency abroad.

Comprehensive coverage.

For travellers seeking comprehensive coverage, including cancel for any reason (CFAR) or upgrade options for lost or stolen items, a more expensive travel insurance plan may be worth the investment. Premium plans often offer:

  • Cancel for any reason coverage
  • Upgrade options for lost or stolen items
  • Enhanced 24/7 travel assistance services

Risks of insufficient travel insurance coverage.

Opting for the cheapest travel insurance plan without carefully reviewing the coverage details can expose you to potential risks such as:

Financial Risks

Inadequate coverage for emergency medical expenses, trip cancellation, or lost baggage can result in significant financial impact on you. Medical emergencies abroad can lead to exorbitant medical bills, and without sufficient coverage, imagine the horror of you paying out-of-pocket!

Limited Protection

Cheap travel insurance plans often come with limitations and exclusions that may not provide adequate protection for your specific travel needs. For instance, exclusions for adventure sports or pre-existing medical conditions can leave you unprotected in case of an accident or illness related to these activities.

Additional Stress

Dealing with unexpected situations such as lost baggage, flight cancellations, or medical emergencies without adequate travel insurance coverage can be stressful and ruin your travel experience.

Assess Your Travel Needs

Before purchasing travel insurance, assess your travel needs and the potential risks associated with your trip based on the following factors:

  • Destination and travel activities
  • Value of your trip and prepaid expenses
  • Health condition and medical history

Compare Plans

Shop around and compare different travel insurance plans to find one that offers the best value for your money. Pay attention to the coverage limits, exclusions, deductibles, and additional benefits offered by each plan.

Read the Fine Print

Carefully read the policy terms and conditions, including the coverage exclusions and limitations. Make sure you understand what is covered and what is not to avoid any surprises in case of a claim.

Consult An Insurance Expert

If you’re unsure about which travel insurance plan to choose, call and ask an insurance expert or travel advisor who can help you find a plan that meets your specific needs and provides adequate coverage for your trip. It’s always better to get the conversation on record, preferably on email so you can clarify any questions before purchasing.

While cheap travel insurance can save you money upfront, it may not always provide sufficient coverage for your travel needs.

Investing in a more expensive travel insurance plan with comprehensive coverage can offer better protection and peace of mind, especially for high-value trips or travellers with pre-existing medical conditions. By assessing your travel needs, comparing different plans, and reading the fine print, you can make an informed decision and choose a travel insurance plan that offers the best value for your money.

Ultimately, we travel to relax and create happy memories for ourselves and our loved ones, so all you need is that one purchase to ensure a safe and worry-free experience.

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

In an ever-evolving world, emergency medical and evacuation travel insurance coverage is essential, especially if you're traveling internationally. However, sports equipment coverage, pet protection, and cancel for any reason coverage are among the increasingly popular coverage options that are changing the way we travel. We've gathered the best cheap travel insurance plans to help you protect your trip while on a budget.

Our top picks for the best cheap travel insurance

  • Best overall: HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance
  • Best for trip cancellation: GoReady travel insurance
  • Best value: Nationwide Travel Insurance
  • Best for reputation: Trawick International Travel Insurance

How we rate the best cheap travel insurance »

Best overall: HTH Worldwide

The HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance Economy plan offers the most comprehensive coverage across major categories of all the providers in this guide.

You'll have some peace of mind with up to $75,000 of financial protection for eligible medical emergencies, and up to $500,000 per person for medical evacuation costs. For more everyday expenses, you can also relax with baggage loss and delay, trip interruption, cancellation and delay coverage that will help you recoup many, if not all, of your costs.

However, this plan falls short on missed connection benefits and accidental death coverage, both of which are not available under most circumstances (missed connection coverage only applies to cruises, and will only cover up to $500 per person after a three-hour delay).

Best for trip cancellation: GoReady

The GoReady travel insurance Trip Cancellation Plan is exactly that: a cost-effective plan that offers protection in the event that your trip is canceled for a covered reason. The plan we priced out for our hypothetical trip cost just 1.16% of our total travel expenses — a very small amount of money to pay for the guarantee of our money back in the right circumstances.

The benefit is that this plan can supplement other coverage you already have, or give you a little bit of protection for a trip where you might not otherwise have opted for insurance altogether. On the downside, you won't get any protection for medical emergencies, trip interruption or delays or lost bags from this plan.

Best value: Nationwide

Nationwide Travel Insurance  is a well-rounded alternative to HTH Worldwide Trip Protector Economy. This plan offers solid protection for both travel-related snafus as well as situations that might call for emergency medical and evacuation, making it a good choice for trips where you have cause to worry about potential interruptions or delays. However, it does not offer protection for missed connections or accidental death.

Best for reputation: Trawick

The Trawick International Travel Insurance Safe Travels Explorer plan has been purchased by more than 36,000 travelers since 2020, and it has great reviews to boot. And no wonder: Trawick offers generous trip delay coverage of up to $2,000 per person, although hopefully you won't need to reach that reimbursement amount because the daily limit is $150.

You'll also be able to rely on a $200 reimbursement per person for lost baggage - one of the higher amounts amongst these affordable plans, although this amount pales in comparison to the baggage loss coverage offered through the best travel credit cards .

Types of Affordable Travel Insurance

Comprehensive coverage.

This type of insurance offers extensive protection, covering everything from medical issues to trip cancellations. While it's more expensive up front, it can save you a lot in the long run.

Medical-Only Coverage

As the name suggests, this policy focuses solely on medical emergencies, making it a cost-effective option for travelers who are primarily concerned about health-related expenses.

Evacuation and Repatriation

In extreme cases where you need to be evacuated due to a medical emergency or a natural disaster, this coverage ensures that you can return home safely without incurring huge costs.

Benefits of Opting for Cheap Travel Insurance

Cost savings.

Cheap travel insurance can significantly reduce your travel expenses, ensuring that you're not overpaying for coverage you might not need.

Adequate Coverage for Less

Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's lacking. Many affordable policies offer substantial coverage, giving you peace of mind without breaking the bank.

How to Pick The Best Cheap Travel Insurance Plan for You

No single travel insurance plan will meet the needs of every single traveler. By nature, we are diverse and evolving meaning travel insurance should be equally so. Travel insurance for a week-long trip to a big city shouldn't be the same as the coverage for a backpacking expedition in the mountains. A splurge to purchase comprehensive insurance coverage may also be worth it for international ventures or other large expenditures.

In most cases, the cost difference between a basic and comprehensive travel insurance plan isn't as significant as you might think. Regardless, it's generally a good idea to choose a trusted travel insurance provider known for exceptional customer service and coverage. (For this roundup, we looked at traveler reviews shared through the travel agency SquareMouth.)

  • Assessing Your Travel Needs: Consider the nature of your trip, the destination, and your own personal needs when choosing a policy. This ensures that you're not over-insured or underinsured.
  • Comparing Different Policies: Don't settle for the first policy you find. Compare different options, looking at their coverage and prices, to find the best fit for your budget and needs.
  • Reading the Fine Print: Always read the terms and conditions carefully to understand what's covered, what's not, and the process for making a claim.

How we reviewed cheap travel insurance

To determine the best insurance plan for travelers on a budget, we evaluated dozens of products using a hypothetical trip to Australia for a single traveler, age 26, with a total cost of $2,500 for flight, hotel and other incidentals. We then compiled the plans that covered the essentials at the lowest costs.

Of note: All of these plans include COVID-related medical coverage and 24-hour assistance, and pay at least 100% of your trip cost for eligible trip cancellations. None include rental car coverage.

The seven winning plans cost between $29 to $74 — significantly below the typical cost of comprehensive travel insurance, which can range between 4%-8% of total travel expenses, according to the US Travel Insurance Association.

But these affordable plans also come with comparably low ceilings for various aspects of coverage such as emergency medical, trip cancellation, or delay — and do not include rental car or "cancel for any reason" (CFAR) protection. So if you think you might need these benefits, it may well be worth upgrading to a comprehensive travel insurance plan for a few more dollars, just for the peace of mind.

Convenience and Flexibility

Each of the plans in this list include 24-hour assistance worldwide from reputable insurance providers. And despite being on the lower end of insurance plans, each of these options includes refunds for up to 100% of your total trip cost for eligible reasons. Each of these plans also includes medical coverage for COVID-related issues that may arise during your travels, which may come in handy as the pandemic continues to evolve worldwide.

Sufficient Coverage in Essential Categories

The cheapest travel insurance plan will rarely cover every scenario that could go awry on your trip. However, each of these plans can at least help you get your money back in the event that your travel is canceled for an eligible reason, and most of them include financial protection if you incur emergency medical bills while traveling. We also factor in what travelers are most concerned about now.

What company offers the cheapest travel insurance?

If you just want trip cancellation protection, go with the GoReady Trip Cancellation Plan. For more robust coverage that won't break the bank, consider HTH Worldwide's TripProtector Economy, Trawick's Safe Travels Explorer, or Nationwide's Essentials plan.

Can cheap travel insurance provide enough coverage for international trips?

Yes, many affordable policies offer comprehensive coverage suitable for international travel. It's crucial to compare policies and understand your needs.

Why is travelers insurance so cheap?

Travelers insurance is relatively cheap because it only covers you for a set period of time, and depending on your plan, the level of coverage you get may not be particularly high. However, even with high coverage limits and extras like cancel for any reason coverage , travel insurance is relatively affordable.

How much should travel insurance cost?

The average cost of travel insurance is 4%-8% of your trip's cost. This usually translates into a premium between $89 to $399.
