While it’s tempting to go for the top hashtags that have millions of posts, it’s best to keep to this smart strategy:

• About 2 hashtags that have more than 1 million posts
• 6 to 8 that are between 500,000 and 1 million posts
• 6 to 8 that are between 250,000 and 500,000
• 8 to 10 under 250,000

This gives you anywhere between 22 to 28 hashtags that you’re using, enough to give you visibility.

Instagram’s maximum recommended total for hashtags is 30.

I tend to use about 20 hashtags, as that’s my sweet spot – but for me, lately, it’s mostly home decor posts as I’m doing less travelling (that’s when this list of home decor hashtags comes in handy).

The free version is good – and you can add your own presets to it. The upgraded version gives you more controls for better editing, especially when it comes to landscape photography.

A hashtag is used on several social media platforms. It usually consists of a word or phrase with a # symbol preceding it.

Hashtags are used to identify digital content on a specific topic, and ultimately, helps users find relevant content related to that hashtag containing the word or phrase.

Specifically on Instagram, hashtags help sort out photos specific to the word or phrase.

You can find images and videos by looking up a hashtag and see all the photos and images that other people posted with the same hashtag.

Why use travel Instagram hashtags?

Using travel hashtags on Instagram as a travel influencer or a blogger is a must if you want your photos and videos if you want more than just your followers to see your content.

Without using hashtags, a small percentage of your current followers will see your post.

When you use hashtags, then both followers and non-followers can see your post.

Hashtags can improve the reach of your photo by 30-40%!

There are three spots to put hashtags although people like to argue about which is the best spot.

At the Bottom of the Caption

The best spot according to Instagram is to put hashtags right in the caption at the bottom.

1st Comment of a Post

Some people argue that this clutters up their caption. Thus, those people will put it in the 1st comment meaning they post their post, then copy and paste hashtags in the first comment.

However, people say that putting hashtags in the comment limits the reach on posts.

You can test out what works best for you– hashtags in the caption or in the comments– or don’t over think it. Just post them in the caption.

Within Stories

Aside from your in-feed posts, you can use up to 10 hashtags in your Instagram story to widen the reach of your story.

How many travel hashtags for Instagram should you use?

The Instagram Creators account says to specifically use 3-5 hashtags but from personal experience and seeing what other travel bloggers do, 3-5 is too little.

On the other hand, this Adspresso study suggested that 11 is a sweet spot for hashtags.

I personally use about 15-18 because that works for me so you can test out what works for your accounts.

Focusing on the number is not the most important factor for hashtags to increase the exposure of your post though.

What matters is how often a hashtag has been used or how popular it is because if a hashtag has been used too many times such as #travel or #explore, then your posts won’t be seen under that hashtag page. It defeats the purpose to use such a large hashtag especially if you’re a smaller account.

What are the best hashtags to grow my account?

The best hashtags to grow your account are going to be ones that are very specific to your photo and also account size.

Again, if you have less than 5k followers and use a hashtag like #travel, which has been used 610 million times, your post will quickly disappear among other posts.

As a result, if you are a small to medium sized account, make sure to use that aren’t used as much so your posts will actually be seen in the hashtag page.

Pro Tip: If you use travel hashtags for Instagram reels, make sure they are specific as possible! I’ve noticed that you don’t need as many hashtags for Instagram reels as you need for in-feed posts too so test it out to see what works for your account.

What are some good travel hashtags to use?

As we mentioned above, the best travel hashtags are the ones that are really specific to your travel niche and your account.

A good hashtag strategy for Instagram is to 7-10 Low Competition hashtags, 4-6 Medium Competition ones and 1-2 High Competition hashtags.

The hashtag is one of the easiest ways to amplify your reach and to get your post on top of Instagram .

I know it’s quite boring to find the relevant hashtag for each post. But you don’t have to worry I did it for you.

I researched best travel hashtags for Instagram; test them, So today I’m going to share best Travel Hashtags for Instagram. So grab a cup of coffee because it’s a bit quiet lengthy:

How many instagram hashtags should i use.

There is no certain limit to using hashtags in one single post. But I’ve seen many popular Instagrammer use a maximum of 30 hashtags.

Many Instagram experts suggest 11 hashtag is best for attracting new followers and it best for engagement. But I’m a fan of using all 30 hashtags sometimes it looks spammy but you can use the hashtag in comments as well. There is no difference in their functionality if you use hashtags in comments and captions in both cases it works same.

How do get rank your post at the top of your hashtag feeds?

There is no point of telling you the numbers of hashtags if you don’t know how to use them.

The hashtag can amplify your reach but a great hashtag comes with great responsibility. It’s very difficult to get rank yourself on a hashtag that has more than millions of followers because it has too much competition. It is just like rank on the first page of Google on a keyword that has more than 50% competition.

A big hashtag is easy for getting quick likes and comments but after some time your post getting disappears and then all died.

Let’s reverse this; it is quite easy to get rank on hashtag which has less than 500k follower or less than 1M followers. So try to use those hashtag which <500k or <1M depends on your engagement ratio.

When you rank on top of a smaller hashtag then you get slow engagement but for a long time and you have a good chance to get featured yourself in larger feeds.

Instagram allows you to use max 30 hashtag in one post. So use them smartly:

• 8 Hashtag with more than 1M+ feeds
• 10 Hashtag with 100K to 1M feeds
• 5 Hashtag with less than 100K feeds

Now you left with 7 hashtags use them for location or to define the post or as your mood.

Now you may think that how to find out the hashtag on the basis of feeds but you don’t have to worry at all, I did bucketing of all hashtag on the basis of feeds:

These are the most common and popular travel hashtags on Instagram and hardest to rank on top as well. So use them smartly or I’ll say use them for getting quick likes & comments, because when we are talking about engagement then how much time to get the number of likes & comments also matter:

These are less generic but more useful. Now by using these hashtags, you have a better chance to rank on top in hashtags as compared to the above list. Less number means less competition:

At one time it was ok to use any hashtags on Instagram that were accurate for your photo, even if the hashtags were unrelated to one another. The more the merrier. Currently this practice is not working. Clarity is key. Algorithms are favoring authoritative content that is easy to classify and understand.

By using the pound sign (#) with a word or phrase, the platform that you are on immediately recognises this as a category. It can then combine your entry with other content of the same category.

Using multiple hashtags on the same piece of content, spreads your content across a variety of search-term categories.

So why categorise content?

It all comes down to usability.

We often think of social media platforms as places to offload our content. But in reality they are search engines. Like google. With a vast network of categorised data. People use social media to search for ideas, specific places, clothes, music, food, etc.

Travel Hashtags Do’s & Don’ts

Here are the key things to do & avoid when using instagram:

• Use a variety of travel related hashtags and mix them up daily
• Limit your hashtags to 20 per post
• Check the hashtag volumes before you use them (explained later)
• Use hashtags across a variety of ranking volumes
• Keep the hashtags relevant (Instagram’s algorithm is smart. It can tell if you are trying to use hashtags that are not related to you image)
• Add in some hashtags into your actual post (6 to 8)
• Put the rest as a comment , once you have posted

Don’ts

• Use the same hashtag on consecutive days
• Have all of the same hashtags copied from another account ‘s post

How to use Travel Hashtags

Because instagram is a search engine (like Google), there is a category ranking algorithm built in.

For example, if 100 people all do an instagram post at the same time and each person uses the same hashtag, how will they show up in the category? Who goes to the top and what order will they rank in?

The idea is to rank for travel hashtags

By ranking for popular hashtags, you will be towards the top of the “list” or order.

If you are using the platform to search. For example, you want to check a beach destination in The Caribbean to see what it looks like, or get travel inspiration. You search the hashtags “CaribbeanBeaches”.

The results will show you a lot of content related to The Caribbean beaches. There you can either view by “Recent” or “Top”.

• Recent – The posts in recent come up in chronological order
• Not everyone’s “Top” feed will look the same
• Popularity of posts
• Relevance of post
• Content of the user and users engagement
• Your own preferences (based on your search history/likes, ect)

When you post your content you want to be shown towards the top of the “Top”, to get more views.

Some hashtags are more popular than others

When you search for tags you’ll notice the most popular travel tags by the number of posts they have. Or the number of times people have tagged that specific #. The more popular the tag, the harder it is to rank.

For example (At the time this guide was written):

• #Caribbeanbeach has 37.3K Posts (it has been tagged 37,300 times)
• #travel has 428 M Posts (used 428 Million times on posts)
• #underthepalmtree has 5K+ Posts (tagged 5,000+ times)

What does this mean?

If you want to be seen by more accounts, you want to use the hashtags that you will be able to rank for.

How many hashtags should you use

Instagram allows you to use up to 30 hashtags. But does that mean you should use all 30?

There are many differing opinions on this. Some people believe that it looks spammy for your account to use all 30 hashtags, and others believe that you should take every chance you can. Ultimately, do what is right for you, but make sure you have a targeted approach and a relevant selection of tags.

How do you rank for travel hashtags?

The best way to rank for travel hashtags is to consider:

• Hashtag Relevance

Engagement Rate

Hashtag relevance.

Instagram has now provided the feature to “follow” hashtags. So if you want to see beautiful photos of beaches, you can follow the hashtag #caribbeanbeach, and the photos associated with this tag will display in your feed.

However, Instagram has also provided a “Don’t show for this hashtag” option, which means if you see a photo of a skyscrapers in a city, you can flag to instagram that this photo is not relevant for the tag, and they will remove it from your feed.

So if you use hashtags that aren’t relevant to the associated photo, and numerous people hide it from their feeds, instagram may flag your account and reduce your reach for hashtags.

Do you have a similar engagement rate to the photos in the “top posts” of the hashtags you want to rank for? If you do, then you have a good chance of ranking for it.

If you are a relatively small instagram account (less the 15K followers), it’s good to focus on the smaller volume hashtags to get you going (that have less than 50,000 tags).

Find some hashtags that you think are appropriate for your photo (see below for ideas), go to the top posts for each of those hashtags, and look at the amount of likes/comments it receives, and whether you get a similar amount on your posts.

What Travel Hashtags to use?

The best way is to play the odds. You’ve got 20 hashtags to use. So, spread them across a range of hashtag volumes.

The better your post does on the smaller hashtags, the more likely it is to be shown on the larger ones.

It’s better to rank well on smaller volume tags than not show up at all on huge volume tags.

Based on the size of your account (how may followers and what kind of engagement you get), you should adapt the hashtags accordingly. If you are a smaller account it’s best to focus on ranking for the smaller hashtags first.

If you can rank for these, get seen and then create engagement to your post from accounts that do not follow you (have found you through the search tag) you will start doing well (as far as the algorithm is concerned).

The idea is to create real interest & engagement.

If you start fairly niche it is easier to get seen, by similar accounts.

Start Small & Work Upwards

Let’s go back to the #underthepalmtree example. It’s a low volume tag (5k). But if you really do have a good post about being at the beach with beautiful palm trees, use it. People looking for this inspiration will really engage with your post.

If you get good engagement with your post on these smaller tags, it will help you to rank for the bigger tags.

How to distribute your tags across search volume

The best way to get noticed on the big ranking travel hashtags is to do well on the smaller, then medium sized tags first (on the same post).

Therefore, you should distribute your 20 allowable tags across a variety of ranking hashtags.

It depends on the size of your account. If you have 20K followers or below . Your travel hashtag ranking distribution should look something like this:

• 10K Posts (or under) – Use 2 Hashtags
• 10K – 50K Posts (or under) – Use 6 Hashtags
• 50K – 250K Posts (or under) – Use 5 Hashtags
• 250K – 1M Posts (or under) – Use 4 Hashtags
• 1M – 5M (or under) – Use 1 Hashtag
• 5M – 10M – Use 1 Hashtag
• Above 10M – Use 1 Hashtag
• TOTAL = 20 Hashtags

If you have above 20K followers , have more in the higher tier. Ie, start from the 50K and up. Use the extra 7 tags spread towards the top.

Location vs Niche Travel Hashtags

Within every category there are multiple sub categories. These make it easier to search for niches.

Within travel there are several different categories. You account might span across a few. When you use your travel hashtags you will therefore want to target these different travel niches.

Within travel there are several popular subcategories , including:

What should the ratio be between location and travel related tags?

A good ratio is 50/50.

• The country
• The specific region
• A specific attraction or natural element in your post
• Trending travel tag related to that destination for example “visitguatemala” or “therealguateamala” (if you are in Guatemala)

Should I Copy & Paste Instagram Hashtags?

You can have a series of travel hashtags that you use. But remember, do not use them on consecutive posts.

It’s best to have at least 5 different series of travel hashtags that you can use through the week. Use an app like Notes to save your general travel niches series and rotate them every 5 or more posts.

Then on each post use your location related posts (different ones for consecutive days).

Don’t plagiarise another account (copy their exact hashtags and use them on your own).

Instagram is still a form of art and self expression. By copying someone’s work (even the hashtags) you are making yourself susceptible to plagiarism.

Apart from the legal perspective. It’s just not cool. Be inspired, but use your own imagination.

If someone you follow does a post and uses some hashtags that get them good engagement, see if you can incorporate a few of these into your own series, however don’t straight up copy the whole 20.

Using trending locations on your post (when you are not there) has become a popular way to gain more engagement. There are certain locations that are trending more than others. Bali is one.

There seems to be more and more people trying to take advantage of these trending locations and use the popular Bali hashtags on their photo, even though their photo is in another part of the world.

Trying to get your post seen by more people is one thing. But getting better engagement is another.

The most popular are the highest volume. But these are not necessarily the best to use. Because they are so high volume, they might get used multiple times per second.

Best Creative Travel Hashtags for Instagram

It has taken some time, but with a lot of trial and error, we have determined what are the best hash tags to use for travel on Instagram.

Should I use Hashtags on Instagram?

The simple answer to this question is yes you should.

The reason why hashtags are so important to use on Instagram is because it means many more eyes on your page.

This translate to more followers and more engagement equaling a Insta-famous star! (Well we can hope!)

In accordance with the policies of Instagram, you are allowed to use 30 Hash Tags .

Different influencers will tell you different theories on how many hash tags is ideal to use.

Some strongly believe you should not use any less than 30. Others believe going too far (aka 30 hash tags) can flag you for Instagram’s spam policy and lead you to become shadow banned.

Oh, and by the way, the notorious shadow ban is NOT a myth! We have personally been shadow banned and it is not at all fun not having people see your post on Instagram. Why go to all the effort to post if no-one is going to see it?

If you don’t know what the term shadow ban means, basically, it means not having your posts appear in hash tags.

Instagram is coy about what will cause your account to be shadow banned but we know from experience one way to get shadow banned is using the same hash tag over and over. Big no no.

So the first point is mixing your hash tags up! Don’t use the same tags on every post or you will be a victim of the notorious and dreaded shadow ban!

Our second tip for you is to place your hash tag in the post description NOT your first comment. Hiding your hash tags may be prettier but this is a method that will result in you being shadow banned.

We have found that around 20 hash tags on our Instagram posts  is the sweet spot in having many entries in the lottery but avoiding the shadow ban.

Okay so first things first, there is no one standard answer for what hash tags you should use.

There is a formula to this so listen carefully. There are two questions to determine which hash tags are best for you!

1. How Large is your following?

The first thing we should consider is how large your following is. Aka how many followers do you have.

This vital piece of information will determine the size of hash tag we can go after:

• 0 – 20,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 10,000 tags
• 20,000 – 40,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 50,000 tags
• 50,000 – 100,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 100,000 tags
• 100,000 – 300,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 300,000 tags
• 300,000 + – Hit them big tags up!

2. What is your engagement rate?

It doesn’t end there though folks. Oh no, that would be way tooo easy and Instagram is anything but easy.

If you have 300,000 followers and an engagement rate of 0.01%, you are not going to appear in top of 300,000+ hash tag.

Whether your followers are engaging and how fast your followers are liking and engaging on your post will determine whether you appear at the top of a hash tag.

If you need to work on your engagement, aim for hash tags in one to two categories down from your follower count.

Remember the aim of the game is to appear at top of hash tags and gain more followers and likes!

Should I do travel hash tags alone?

No, hash tags work best when they are mixed with  other hash tags that are relevant to your picture.

The main thing you should consider here is relevance! You should not hash tag #cutedogs if there is no dog in your photo! Instagram has intelligence to work this out!

Use around 5-10 generic travel hash tags, 5-10 location hash tags (for example France hash tags !) and 5-10 action hash tags based on what you are doing.

I love sharing my travel photos. Unfortunately, I feel like if I am sharing them without a proper hashtag, they aren’t quite as “cool” or “seen” as the photos other travel bloggers and photographers are posting with a hashtag. Hashtags have become very popular, and gone are the days when we knew that cute little symbol as a “pound sign” on the calculator. In this post, we’ll talk about what a hashtag is, why you want to use one, and then I’ll give you a whole list of travel hashtags. Unraveling the mystery of the hashtag has been fun for this old grandma. I may be hip, but I’m still learning! Isn’t that part of the fun in this life? Learning new things and sharing them with others? Good news! I did the work of learning so I can share the info with you. You get to read up on the research I did for you! Let’s get into it!

What is a Hashtag Anyway?

A hashtag is that fun little crosshatch symbol that you see all over social media channels these days. Back in my day (I love saying that), a hashtag was known as a pound sign and we used it primarily to indicate weights in measurements when typing. Now, thanks to modern-day social media, including Instagram and Facebook, we call this little symbol a hashtag and it has a whole new use.

Instagram is the most popular place to use a hashtag. A post shared with a hashtag will look like this: #hashtagpost. The symbol # is followed by the words that relate to whatever it is you’re posting. If you’re posting images of travel photography, you should use hashtags with words connected to your travels and what you’re showing in your photo.

Tips for Why You Want to Use a Hashtag?

Personal use.

There are two simple answers to this. First, you can use hashtags to organize your posts and travel photos for organizational purposes. Hashtags are easily searchable on social media, especially on your Instagram account, so it’s easy to find your images back after posting them if you’ve hashtagged them. For example, if you put a common hashtag on all of your photos of your trip to Chicago with the girls, then, later on, you will easily be able to go back and search for those photos with that hashtag. If your friends all use the same hashtag, you will easily be able to find what they’ve posted as well. Choose a unique and specific hashtag, such as #smithgirlsdoChicago2022, so your images will all match in a unique and fun way.

Professional Use?

The other reason you may want to use a hashtag is to showcase what you’re posting outside of your group of friends and family. If you are considering moving into the realm of social media influencer or blogger, then your goal on social media is likely to gain followers. Hashtags are perfect for this. Why? Because people can search and follow common hashtags. Even if you aren’t looking to make money out of your posts, it can be a whole lot of fun to see one of your posts gain likes and follows. A popular hashtag, like #puremichigan, will have many followers and would be perfect to use while showcasing photos of the beauty you see when traveling through Michigan. Awesome list! I use most of these! That means I am doing something right! I would like to add #femaletravelbloggers for all the lady or duo travel bloggers out there. We feature 3-5 photos a week from our awesome bloggers and have our own account. We’re a bit newer to the game, but are growing strong!

My Secret to Weeks of Free Lodging in Europe

I wanted to stay in apartments or houses—but i was a brand-new college grad on a budget.

This is One Thing , a column with tips on how to live.

After I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to travel for a few months, so I secured a part-time job that could be done remotely. I didn’t want to do my work shifts from a hostel bunk bed or random cafés that stayed open late. (I’d be in Europe, thanks to an EU passport, and my gig was based in the states.) Paying for Airbnbs the entire trip would eat up way too much of my paychecks. It was kismet that just as I was starting to plan my travels, my friend sent me a video about a couple traveling the world and dog-sitting along the way, using an app called Trusted Housesitters .

As an avid dog lover, I thought it was perfect. I paid a little over $100 to make an account, then started browsing housesits around the world. I adorned my profile with pictures of me and the various dogs in my life, and applied for opportunities across the ocean. Before I had even left the United States, I had three gigs set up: I’d spend about 10 days in Scotland and Wales, then three weeks in Amsterdam.

Just like when setting up drinks through a dating app, you do have to be vigilant and pay attention for red flags when talking to potential hosts. My stay in Scotland was less than ideal for many reasons—the situation could have been easily avoided if I had listened to my gut and declined that gig. (The app does do background checks, and there’s an opportunity for both sides to leave reviews, meaning you don’t go in completely unaware.) But the other dog-sits were fantastic. One experience went so well that last fall, I returned to Amsterdam to once again to dog-sit Pretzel, a lovely Maltipoo, while her parents got married and went on their honeymoon.

Although I opted for longer sits abroad, there is also the option to just watch a furry friend stateside for a weekend. (If you do go internationally, be mindful that you might potentially need a work visa.) I just checked the app, and as I’m writing this, there are opportunities available in cities that include Austin, Atlanta, and Boulder.

Of course, you have the responsibility of taking care of someone else’s dog—you need to do some planning and can’t just leave the pet alone all day, and the owners don’t pay you. But the free accommodations feel like a fair exchange to me. I also love that many of the dog-sit locations are in more residential areas, so you’re able to experience local life in whatever city you’re in. Plus, you get to hang with a cute dog. What could be better?

Meghan Markle is diving further into her Nigerian heritage in her upcoming trip with Prince Harry.

The next stop on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s world travels will reportedly be Nigeria. 

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are scheduled to visit the country in May, following an invitation from the Nigerian Chief of Defense Staff. While visiting the African country, the couple will participate in native cultural activities and meet with various service members. 

The invitation to visit was reportedly sparked by Harry’s Invictus Games , a sporting event he designed after discovering how “sports could help wounded servicemen and women in their recovery — physically, psychologically and socially.” Considered to be one of the prince’s few remaining ties to the royal family, the games hosted 500 athletes across 21 nations last year in Germany, where Nigeria was cheered on by the duchess herself . Though the 2025 Invictus Games are scheduled to take place in Canada, Nigeria is expressing its interest in hosting a future event. 

“The visit is to consolidate Nigeria’s stronghold at the game and the possibility of hosting the event in later years,” said Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Nigeria’s acting director of defense information in a statement, per People magazine .

During last year’s event, the couple grew a special affinity for the Nigerian team . In 2022, after learning that she is 43% Nigerian by taking a genealogy test, Markle revealed her newfound heritage on her award-winning podcast “Archetypes.”

“I’m going to start to dig deeper into all this because anybody that I’ve told, especially Nigerian women, are like, ‘What!’” she shared on the show. 

In light of this discovery, Markle and her husband reportedly spent time with Nigeria’s team at the 2023 Invictus Games, during which the Duchess of Sussex received a new nickname. Like her royal title, her Nigerian name, “Amira Ngozi Lolo,” holds a royal meaning, with “Amira” meaning warrior princess from a legend, “Ngozi” meaning blessed and Lolo meaning “royal wife.” 

“Now, I’m not saying we play favorites in our home, but since my wife discovered she’s of Nigerian descent, it’s likely to get a little bit more competitive this year,” Prince Harry said in his 2023 opening speech, teasing about which team the Duchess would be rooting for.
