China is known for its strict visa policy. Soon, short-term travel visas will no longer be required for many Europeans. What is behind the policy change?

Beginning in December, German citizens will be able to travel to China visa-free for 15 days. This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing on Friday. China has also abolished the travel visa requirement for citizens of France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Malaysia. Singapore and Brunei are already on the list, but Switzerland is not. The new rule is in force for one year on a trial basis and applies to both business travelers and tourists. Chinese citizens, however, will still need a visa to enter Schengen countries.

China wants to demonstrate openness with its relaxed visa policy and take a step toward Europe. This should be seen as a positive diplomatic signal. It can also work the other way around: Japanese people were able to travel to China visa-free before the pandemic, but that is no longer possible. Relations between the two countries are currently frosty.

China's soft power has suffered

The aim of the new visa policy is to facilitate exchanges between Chinese people and foreigners and to open up to the outside world, says a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the coronavirus pandemic, China isolated itself from the outside world for almost three years. Entry and exit were subject to very strict conditions. As a result, China's soft power weakened even further. A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in July found that two thirds of respondents from 24 countries had a negative view of China. The higher the average income in the country, the more negative the opinion.

Since the end of the zero-COVID policy in December last year, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been trying to attract more travelers from abroad. Employees of Chinese embassies and consulates also invite journalists to China, inviting them to get their own impression of the country. They imply that the media are presenting a distorted picture of China.

What's more, foreign bank cards are not accepted in many places in China. Payment by app also only works to a limited extent with a foreign bank account – and cash is no longer welcome in China, even in rural areas.

The decision to abolish the visa application process for some countries should make things much easier in the run-up to a trip to China. The visa process is comparable in complexity to a visa application for the USA, but the procedure has become even stricter in recent years. Long forms must be filled out with detailed information on education and work. A trip to China, including all hotel booking confirmations, must be planned in advance and noted in the application.

Fewer flights to China than before the pandemic

But there is also a very practical reason why fewer people are traveling to China than before the pandemic. There are fewer flights. Before the pandemic, the Lufthansa Group flew to mainland China and back over 80 times a week with its Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian brands. Lufthansa currently flies 22 times a week to Beijing and Shanghai and 14 times to Hong Kong, says a spokesperson for the airline. This number is not expected to explode in the coming months.

1. Find out if you need a visa

The first thing is to check whether you need a visa or not. You usually need to apply for a Chinese visa unless you meet one of China's visa-free policies . 72- and 144-hour visa-free transit offer great convenience if you have a layover in China.

2. Find out which visa you need.

There are many types of China visa. Choose a visa type that applies to your situation. If you are planning to go on a vacation in China, apply for a Tourist Visa (L Visa).

3. Prepare the required documents.

The following list of documents are required for any China visa application:

• A valid passport. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months when you enter China.
• A complete visa application form (The visa application form can be downloaded from the Chinese embassy website or from our website. You complete it by computer, print and sign it. In some countries such as UK you should complete an online form . On the form, you might find an item "Serial number of invitation letter of the authorized organization", you may skip this item if you don't have an invitation letter, or the invitation letter is not of this type.)
• A recent passport-type photograph (head and shoulders only, front view, with a white background, approximately 48mmx33mm)

Along with the aforementioned generally required documents, several additional documents are required depending upon the type of China visa applied for.

For instance, if you are applying for a tourist L visa , you need to prepare an air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation OR an invitation letter issued by a Chinese travel agency. ( An invitation letter could be provided by us without extra charge if a China tour of 3 days or more is booked .)

An invitation letter can replace the air ticket and hotel booking if you are planning to stay with friends or family who live in China and can't provide the hotel confirmation, or if your travel is being organized by a travel agency (or other duly authorized organization) in China . We can provide you with the invitation letter if you book a tour with us.

4. Submit the application.

You may submit the application to the Visa Office at Chinese embassies or consulates, or China Visa Application Service Centers (also called CVASC) if they are operating in your country.

Starting from 2018, visa applicants from more and more countries (including the U.S., the UK, and Canada) have to make their visa application in person and have their fingerprints collected .

The regular service processing time is 4 days, and the rushed service takes about 1 day. The latter is only available in extreme emergencies pending a consular officer's approval.

5. Pay the fee and collect your visa.

Go to the place where you apply for China visa, pay the fee and collect your visa.

To enter the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) or the Macau SAR you need a valid passport which must be valid at least one month longer than the expected length of stay. On entry German nationals receive a tourist visa which is valid for 3 months. This visa is, however, not valid for travels into Mainland China.

Starting from 16 July 2018, passengers arriving in Hong Kong who are in possession of currency and bearer negotiable instruments with a total value of over HKD120,000 will be required to make a written declaration using the Red Channel (R32 System Declaration). To enter the P.R. of China you will need a Chinese visa for which you have to apply before the journey at the Chinese Embassy or one of the Chinese Consulates General in Germany . From December 1st 2023 to November 30th 2024, citizens from Germany (as well as from France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia) holding ordinary passports can be exempted from visa to enter the P.R. of China and stay for no more than 15 days for business, tourism, family visit and transit purposes.

Visiting Germany as a foreign tourist: Who needs a visa?

W hether you're into high culture, beer festivals or football — Germany makes for a fabulous holiday destination. But who needs a visa to visit?Germany is a fantastic holiday destination year-round. With more medieval castles than you can count, vibrant cities, a rich history, famously hearty fare and Oktoberfest, the world's biggest beer festival, Germany offers something for everyone. Plus, this summer, it's playing host to the UEFA 2024 European Football Championship. So that's plenty of good reasons to spend a vacation in Germany.

But what documents do tourists need to visit the country? Will a valid identity card or passport do? And is any additional paperwork needed? Well, that depends on your nationality.

Visiting Germany as an EU national

All EU citizens have the right to freedom of movement within the bloc, meaning they can enter and stay in any member state they choose for up to three months, provided they hold a valid identity card or passport.

So that makes it pretty straightforward to spend a holiday in Germany as an EU national.

Visiting Germany as a US national

Fortunately, entering Germany as a US citizen is just as simple. With a valid US passport, one can freely enter and stay in any European Schengen area state -- that includes Germany of course -- for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. But be sure to your passport is valid for at least three months after the intended date of departure from Germany.

Visiting Germany as an Indian national

Getting into Germany as an Indian tourist requires a little more effort. As a tourist, you will most likely want to apply for a short-term Schengen area visa, known also as a C visa. It grants the right to enter and stay in any European Schengen area state -- including Germany -- for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. You can fill out the application form here.

What are the passport requirements?

You will need a passport valid for at least three months after the intended date of departure. It needs to have been issued in the last 10 years and contain at least two blank pages.

What does it cost?

Indian adults applying for a short-term Schengen area visa must pay a E80 processing fee.

Children aged 6 to 12 pay a visa processing fee of E40.

What documents are needed?

You will need to fill out the visa application form, provide two recently taken passport pictures, a photocopy of your passport showing your biometric data, proof of medical travel insurance for the entire stay, provide your travel itinerary, proof of sufficient financial means for the entire stay, an invitation (if applicable) and proof of accommodation (if applicable).

How long does it take for the visa to be processed?

It is recommended to submit one's visa application at least 15 days before the intended arrival date. But do not lodge your application more than six months in advance.

Can you submit your visa application online?

No. Indian nationals must appear in person to make their Schengen visa application and provide biometric data.

Visiting Germany as an Afghan national

Getting into Germany as an Afghan tourist is also a bit of work. Tourists will also want to apply for a short-term Schengen area visa, which grants the right to enter and stay in any European Schengen area state -- including Germany -- for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Schengen Visa for Chinese Citizens

The schengen visa – what is it.

Anyone planning a visit to Europe from China should be aware of the Schengen Visa. This is an important consideration for Chinese nationals as the visa has great benefits. The visa is currently valid in a total of 26 member countries across the European continent (known collectively as the Schengen Area ). This article provides comprehensive information on the Schengen Visa for Chinese Citizens.

The Schengen Visa is a travel document that allows the holder to travel freely within the Schengen Area, without the need for additional paperwork. For example, if you begin your travel in France and wish to move on to Germany or Spain (or any other of the 26 member states) you can do so without the need to obtain additional visas. There are no internal borders to negotiate across the Schengen Area, making it simple move from one country to another.

Schengen Visa types for Chinese Citizens

Before applying, you need to determine the type of visa you require. The following criteria will help you decide which visa is suitable for you:

A  Uniform Schengen Visa  permits the holder to stay in, or travel within, any country in the Schengen Area, for up to a maximum of 90 days at a time within a six-month period from the date of issue. These can be issued as:

• a single entry visa, meaning the holder can only enter/exit the Schengen Area once • a double entry visa allowing a second entry within the time period • a multiple entry visa which can be used multiple times (within the permitted time limits of the visa)

A  Limited Territorial Validity Visa  is available for travel only in the particular Schengen country that originally issued the visa. Holders of this type of visa are not permitted to enter any other Schengen member state. These visas are most often used in emergency/humanitarian situations where travel documents are not normally available.

Thirdly, there is a  National Visa . This particular visa is suitable for those who wish to study or work in any one of the Schengen countries and again is available as either a single or multiple entry.

Applying for a visa

Chinese citizens wishing to apply for a visa must begin the process by arranging an appointment at an embassy. The embassy you choose for this should be either the one relating to the country you will begin your trip (first point of entry within the Schengen Area) or to the country in which you be spending the majority of your time. You can schedule your appointment online on the VFS website or, if you prefer, in person at a local VFS centre.

You should be aware that it may take up to 2 weeks to complete the process and you will probably wait up to another 10 days for the embassy to contact you; we would therefore recommend that you apply for your visa at least one full month prior to the date you wish to travel.

The following fees currently apply: Adult visa: 60 EUROS Long stay visa (>90 days): 99 EUROS Child visa (6-12 years): 35 EUROS

There will be no fee payable under certain conditions, such as for: children under the age of 6; diplomatic passport holders, students and accompanying teachers; researchers from third world countries and participants aged 25 and under at educational non-profit conferences or other events.

You will need to obtain an application form which can be downloaded from the embassy website or you may collect a hard copy from the embassy office. Along with the completed form, you will also be required to produce the following documentary evidence:

• two passport sized photographs adhering to the official standard (full-frontal head image between 32-36mm in height with a plain background; no red-eye, reflections or shadows) • a valid passport with at least two available blank pages • a sponsorship letter explaining the reason/objective of the visit and stating the duration • evidence of travel insurance purchased showing a minimum coverage of 30,000 EUROS • copies of all relevant travel tickets and a full itinerary for the trip, including accommodation bookings and any tourist packages • proof of applicant’s status, such as birth/marriage certificates and any national identity documents or cards • employment details, such as contracts, proof of income for the past six months, leave entitlement consent from your employer and any other documentation as requested • business credentials and licenses for self-employed persons along with IT returns and proof of financial means • for retirees, pension payment documents/evidence for past six months • for students, proof of enrolment and verification from school or college

The information and documentation provided by you will be scrutinised carefully by the embassy for authenticity. Once this process has been completed, you will be invited to attend an interview with an embassy official.

The interview

This is a very important part of the visa application process and it’s useful to know what to expect before you attend. The interviewer will ask you a series of questions to ascertain the reason for your travel. You will be asked to confirm all dates and your intended itinerary. Them, you will also be expected to confirm your financial status and may be asked to provide further evidence or documentation in support of this. Lastly, you will need to be able to prove that all necessary arrangements are in place and that you understand your obligations regarding the laws of the country/countries you are intending to visit, and confirm that you will return to China at the end of the visit as planned.

Biometric testing will take place at the end of the interview and the results of this will be electronically associated with your identity documentation.

The outcome

You can expect to hear from the embassy within 10-15 days. If accepted, your visa will be posted out to you in due course. If, however, your application is not successful you will receive a letter stating the reasons why. Possible reasons for rejection could be:

• providing insufficient or incorrect personal information • the necessary travel documentation and/or a fully completed itinerary was not provided • no sponsorship letter was submitted with the application (this is essential where the travel is being sponsored) • the discovery of criminal convictions or any previous history of criminal activity • insufficient financial means or proof of income for travel • passport expiry date – the Chinese government requires that passports need a minimum of three year’s validity • any evidence of forged documentation or incorrect information supplied • insufficient travel insurance coverage (less than 30,000 EUROS) or insurance that does not meet the required terms and conditions for the country/countries being visited • a lack of evidence relating to booked accommodation and any travel/tourist tickets (if a sponsor is organising this on applicant’s behalf, they must send the necessary documents to the embassy) • possible damage or any evidence of tampering with the applicant’s passport • any other form of non-compliance with the procedural requirements of obtaining a visa

Tips for a successful application

There are steps you can take to ensure that your application is successful. First, you should take care to read all the guidance and application forms thoroughly before you begin your application. You should also gather together all the necessary personal information and documentation you will need during the process. The important things to remember are:

• to check that your current passport has at least three year’s validity; if it doesn’t, you must renew it immediately – also ensure there is no damage to the passport • ensure that you explain fully your reasons for travel to the Schengen Area • make sure that all of your personal details are correct and that supporting documents are available and in the correct format • include all relevant educational/professional qualifications and evidence • organise and purchase the required amount of travel insurance • obtain sponsorship letters (where required) and collate all travel/accommodation documentation • do not, under any circumstances, provide incorrect or misleading information or attempt to forge signatures • check and double check that you have followed the correct procedures all the way through the process
