Concert review: Chris Stapleton shows off versatility in country-fried soul performance

Chris Stapleton performs on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Value City Arena.

Singer, songwriter, producer, and country star Chris Stapleton could have remained the guy who wrote the killer, hit songs for big-name country artists.

Or he could have chosen to be simply a very successful lead guitarist in a country, blues, or Southern rock band.

Concert review: Eagles take it to the limit — and then some — during Columbus concert

Or he could have remained the singer for the progressive bluegrass band the Steeldrivers. He’s that good at all of it.

But then, the loyal fans who filled the Value City Arena last night for a nearly two-hour set wouldn’t have heard all of his talents in one neat package. The man did it all.

The songwriting

Starting with the songwriting part, Stapleton is a gifted lyricist who lays words into copacetic settings that range wildly. Some of the most gracefully sentimental were delivered last night, including his sweetly nostalgic first radio single, “What Are You Listening To” and “Joy Of My Life.”

Stapleton writes dizzying rockers that owe a lot to Southern and classic rock but break out on their own, including “Might As Well Get Stoned,” “Parachute,” the Lynyrd Skynyrd-ish “Second One To Know,” and “Arkansas,” which owes its groove to Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll.”

In fact, Stapleton not only got away with playing Skynyrd’s tired “Free Bird” as an introduction to “The Devil Named Music,” but got raves for it from the audience.

He has a penchant for writing deep blues tunes as well. “I Was Wrong” was the real deal and accompanied by Stapleton’s emotion-drenched guitar solo, could have made Freddie, B.B., and Albert King all proud. Even the country tunes owed a deep debt not only to blues but gospel.

Concert review: Elton John proves 'I'm Still Standing' during emotional 2-hour show

Stapleton’s singing a marvel

And then there were the pure country chestnuts, from the lovely, hopeful “Starting Over” to “What Are You Listening To,” which genre-checks power ballads and radio rockers in its narrative. There were the ones also that got jacked-up on blues (“Cold”) and rock 'n' roll (David Allan Coe’s “Tennessee Whiskey.” ) “Broken Halos” and “Hard Livin’” were simply classic, timeless country songs.

Stapleton’s singing was a marvel--alternately deep in soul, gospel, country, and rock. “Cold,” in particular, electrified the audience with the soulful side, going from a whisper to a scream.

Stapleton is an impressive guitarist who soloed on nearly all the songs, relying on his second guitarist only for backing. He played so many different guitars that this writer lost count after six or eight.

Margo Price came on before Stapleton with a set that spoke well for her songwriting and seasoned performance, despite being a relative newcomer like Stapleton. She delivered rockers with a bluesy side suggesting Janis Joplin and country songs like Emmylou Harris, and also impressed with originals such as “Hurtin’ (On The Bottle).”

“When I walk through those curtains and see those smiling faces, my feet don’t touch the ground again ‘til I walk back out and get on that bus that got me there. That’s from a song I wrote called ‘I’ll Always Remember You.’ It’s a true statement,” Strait shared exclusively with Billboard of the recent announcement.

“I love doing these shows with George about as much as I like doing anything. There’s nothing to compare it to,” added Stapleton. “So many of his songs are in the ethos of what country music is. Playing these shows together is a great experience all the way around.”

Stapleton's most recent album, Starting Over , also recently won Best Country Album at the 67th Annual GRAMMYs as well as earning Album of the Year honors at both the 54th Annual CMA Awards and 56th ACM Awards. The record follows Stapleton's pair of Platinum-certified releases from 2017, From A Room: Volume 1 and From A Room: Volume 2 , as well as his 5x Platinum breakthrough solo debut album, Traveller . Known for his electric live performances, Stapleton will join George Strait for a series of stadium shows next year with special guests Little Big Town. In addition to his work as a musician, Stapleton and his wife, Morgane, are founders of the Outlaw State of Kind charitable fund, which supports a variety of causes that are close to their heart. Most recently, Stapleton's "Kentucky Rising" concert last month raised over $2.8 million to support flood relief in Eastern Kentucky.

About Little Big Town GRAMMY, ACM, CMA, AMA and Emmy Award-winning group, Little Big Town – consisting of members Karen Fairchild, Phillip Sweet, Kimberly Schlapman and Jimi Westbrook – first entered the music scene over 20 years ago with hit songs “Boondocks,” “Bring It On Home,” “Good As Gone” and the GRAMMY-nominated “Little White Church.” The band’s breakthrough albums Tornado and Pain Killer produced multiple No. 1 singles, including “Pontoon,” “Tornado” and “Day Drinking,” as well as the history-making, best-selling country single of the year (2015) “Girl Crush.” 2017’s The Breaker debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country charts and Top 10 (No. 4) on the Billboard 200 to critical acclaim. The album features their GRAMMY-winning, multi-week No. 1 single, “Better Man,” as well as the 2019 GRAMMY-nominated, “When Someone Stops Loving You.” The band’s self-produced ninth studio album Nightfall was released January 2020 and hit the top of the Billboard Country charts. The record included critically-acclaimed and GRAMMY-nominated “The Daughters,” “Over Drinking” and “Wine, Beer, Whiskey” – the latter of which has reached more than 380 million global streams. In April 2022, they released their new single “Hell Yeah,” which has amassed more than 60 million global streams to date. Little Big Town has earned more than 45 award show nominations and has taken home nearly 20 awards, including multiple GRAMMY, AMA, People’s Choice, CMA and ACM Awards, in addition to an Emmy award. Their highly anticipated 10th studio album Mr. Sun was released on September 16, 2022.

About Warren Zeiders Warren Zeiders was just 22 years old when he signed his first recording contract with Warner Records’ Los Angeles home office. At that point, fresh out of school, the second song he’d ever written called “Ride The Lightening” had seemingly exploded overnight into the social conciseness of young country music fans. After a series of live covers, “Ride The Lightening” caught fire and ignited a community of true believers before he’d ever toured or played outside his hometown of Hershey, Pa. Hundreds of TikTok posts turned into thousands and then millions. Zeiders’ distinctive, high energy country music is powered by a steady supply of youthful grit, honesty, muscle, and then, there’s that voice; a world-weary, lived-in, honeyed growl that belie his young years. Hailing from central Pennsylvania, the now 23-year-old singer/songwriter delivers outlaw sermons with his unmistakable authenticity. His music is suited more to the vast wilderness of his home state than the bright lights of the big city injecting a healthy dose of Heartland ethos into his stories of real life and the pitfalls of temptation. He walks a fine line, but it’s that space he lives in – between lonesome outsider and magnetic performer – that helps him relate to listeners from all walks of life through songs fueled by an unshakeable soul-searching. His original solo acoustic version of “Ride The Lightning” became an instant hit with fans that has resonated around the world. Since then, Zeiders has released a string of rockin’ but heartfelt tracks on his own 717 Tapes platform along with “Dark Night,” “Burn It Down,” “Wild Horse,” “Up To No Good” and the raucous “One Hell of an Angel” that led People to surmise “Warren Zeiders is a wild horse who sings about the truth.” Following a pair of well-received EP’s, Zeiders hit the road for this first-ever tour with all dates selling out in under 72 hours. To date, Warren Zeiders has amassed over 790 million TikTok views globally, in excess of 492 million audio streams and well over 39 million video plays on the heels of his recently released debut album 717 Tapes: The Album , this past September. The album gathers up his 717 Tapes releases along with a handful of new tracks. Zeiders has hit the road again, this time with a full band selling out every show and he moves into larger venues to accommodate his ever-growing legion of fans. He released a brand new track written and recorded with Los Angeles-based hip hop artist Sueco, called “Ride It Hard, ” on October 28 via Warner Records. Look for fresh U.S. tour dates to be announced soon.
