30 Years in, Tracy Lawrence & Clay Walker Set the Record Straight on Rambunctious Road Stories Ahead of Co-Headlining Tour Dates

by Madeline Crone March 3, 2022, 4:37 pm

A pair of powerhouse performers have hit the road on what is sure to be a nostalgic run of shows down memory lane. On March 3, the neo-traditional frontrunners Tracy Lawrence and Clay Walker will take the stage in Charlotte, North Carolina, kicking off a 12 stop tour.

Videos by American Songwriter

The announcement of this joint tour brings to mind an iconic photograph of the two enduring artists taken at a 2021 show in Omaha—part of a short “test run.” Facing out at a sold-out crowd, the picture captures the artists’ humble surrender to their fanatic audience, coming undone in response to their hit-drenched encore.

“We were doing one hit after another, watching this crowd build into this frenzy,” Walker recalls to American Songwriter.

“And when we got to the end of the night, we did ‘This Woman, This Man,’ ‘Paint Me A Birmingham,’ ‘What’s It To You,’ and the crowd started screaming. I’m not kidding, we couldn’t hear anything else, not even my band. Tracy and I were standing there, and each just held one hand up in the air as a natural reaction. I knew at that moment, this was going to be a sought-after ticket.”

clay walker tracy lawrence tour dates

Lawrence expresses similar confidence derived from a show last year on that same run. It had rained all week in Oklahoma, and as he describes, the mud was “knee-deep.” After slugging equipment in, he was sure no one would turn up. But to his surprise, the show drew thousands of fans.

“Whether they were in their good boots, old boots, work boots, they took the boots off and stood with bare feet in the mud up to their knees,” Lawrence says. “They stayed and they were so freakin’ loud.  I’m not talking about for a few songs, I’m talking about for the whole show. So that told me that we were really on to something special that this was gonna be a really good tour.”

The co-headliners road experience extends beyond their infamous crowd-rousing encore sets and shared appreciation for the stage. Taking it back 30 years, their sequential success coming up through the industry into the new millennium shaped the sound of modern country music. Walker’s “What’s It To You” and Lawrence’s “Time Marches On” are just two of the countless cornerstone hits that helped define an entire generation of country music.

Nearly three decades in, the legendary acts show no sign of slowing. In fact, Walker’s wife put a tracker on his iPhone before he left home for this run with his old friend. And based on their road stories, her concern seems reasonable.

Their highway history dates back to the ’90s when Walker, an emerging act, was invited aboard Lawrence, a rising country star’s tour bus for a few stops. CMT captured a bit of the duo’s debauchery on an episode from their Probably Shouldn’t Tell You This series .

Reflecting on the humored memory, Lawrence offers, “I really didn’t mean to scare him to death like that when he came out on the road; that’s just the way we were.”

Walker responded between laughs, offering his side of the story. “Let me correct the record here,” he begins. “ CMT did not tell the full story. Tracy didn’t almost kill me, I just thought he almost killed me. There were some guns involved that were discharged into the bus floor.”

“I was pointing the gun down,” Lawrence interjects. “That’s why it went off in the floor!”

“ But let me say this,” Walker concludes, “he always had it under control.”

American Songwriter: What do you like about touring together compared to being out there on your own?

Walker: Tracy and I are both veterans, and came out around the same time—he was a little bit before me. I really admired him, and still do. So it’s great to be able to bring this kind of a show together. It’s one thing to have performances, but the song content here is awesome. I love his singing and his song choices. And the thing that makes it better to cross-stage together, is it actually takes a lot of the load off of you. There’s not gonna be some kind of lull in the show;  it’s action-packed from start to finish. And we still won’t even have time to get all the hits in a two-hour show. So it’s those elements that make it attractive to our fans. And I think Tracy and I both enjoy performing so much, and it comes across that we’re not ready to quit after two hours.

Lawrence:  I’m so excited about getting back on the road. I’ve got so much new music to showcase, but just the body of work between the two of us — there are so many iconic records. And not just hit records, but stuff that was impactful to the music industry that are staples and recurring goal things for radio stations all across the country. So this is going to be a great value for the fans to come out and really get a great show.

I know the competition is very tough out there; a lot of big acts are getting back on the road. But I think the music of the ‘90s is really shining again. Right now a lot of people are wanting to get back to those roots; into real songwriting and real music tracks, with bands going into the studio and playing together — not just piecemealing things. So I think our music is in a really good spot right now.

Walker: We always have fun. And I gotta say that my first experience on the road was with Tracy and he has not lost his passion for being on stage. That’s something you see, as artists mature, they lose their passion. Tracy and I did a few shows together to see what they would be like, and he absolutely still has that burning desire to please the audience. He’s energetic, and both of us together, is like the “Troubador” song— I still feel 25 , I think he does.

Tracy: Mentally, I do. The rest of me kind of fights me on that sometimes.

American Songwriter: Clay, I understand you were a fan of Tracy’s before you really got your footing in the industry. What was it about his music that initially drew you in?

Walker: Well, there’s one word that I think signifies great music: ‘soulful.’ It doesn’t matter what genre you’re in, if you don’t have a soulful voice with a soulful song, it is not going to be a classic. The first time I’ve ever heard “Sticks And Stones,” I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s exactly where I want to be.’ I wanted to have that kind of song and start to my career.

As soon as I could drive, I was driving to Best Buy to go buy Tracy’s cassette and that song was on the radio. I got there and it was sold out; I had to go back a week later. So those are the memories you never forget.

And a funny thing happened. That was Tracy’s first single, and mine was “What’s It To You.” I had the second most added first single in country music history. And the only person that ever beat me was Tracy Lawrence with “Sticks And Stones.”

Lawrence: Clay, remember who it was I beat that number with? The guy who held it before me was Mark Chesnutt.

Walker: What’s good about Tracy though is, a lot of times guys can’t follow it up. But he started with a great big song like “Sticks And Stones,” and all he’s done is follow it up. I mean, really one after the other: “Texas Tornado,” “Paint Me A Birmingham,” “Time Marches On.” And there’s plenty more than that. He’s probably better at picking songs and writing songs and anybody else.

Lawrence: Thank you, my friend, I appreciate that. You’ve done pretty well yourself.

American Songwriter: What songs are you looking forward to playing for the upcoming dates?

Walker: I don’t think fans really care that much about new music we do, they want to hear the hits. But as artists, we work our asses off. We have to keep the content coming — new hits, or something that people can listen to a whole bunch. But you try to find the one or two songs off of a new album that you feel like people are either already starting to gravitate toward or ones that you really feel you can deliver live.

We’ve got a new song that debuted on radio this past week. It’s really hard to get into that system, but it came out with great ads on it, so people obviously want to hear it. It’s called “Catching Up With An Ol’ Memory.” I took the title from an old Keith Whitley song, “Between An Old Memory And Me.” So, that’s the one for me I want to perform and promote out there, but I know people are there to hear the hits.

Lawrence: One I’m looking forward to playing that we were working up today is “Don’t Drink Whiskey.” It’s kind of hardcore, the stuff that I sink my teeth into — the love gone, live and make mistakes. This is a powerful song. I wasn’t really looking for any outside material for this last album. But my guitar player brought this song to me, and I was just blown away by the first time I heard it because it’s not just a song to me. It’s something that I’ve lived through; it’s something that we deal with on the road and the excess and overindulgence you live in the music business. And so this one hit me pretty hard.

That’s what I look for outside material, which I think is why I’ve been blessed with being able to pick things that were impactful, and sometimes things that people have missed out on. If it hits me in my heart and cuts me, then I know I can sell it with soul, and I know people will believe it. If I don’t feel it that deep, then it’s not something that’s made for me.

Clay Walker Hints At 2023 Tour Dates With Tracy Lawrence [EXCLUSIVE]

clay walker tracy lawrence tour dates

Clay Walker and Tracy Lawrence are spending part of the remainder of 2022 on the road together , but that might not be the end of their run of joint, co-headlining dates . The “Rumor Has It” singer hints that there might be more chances for fans to catch the country music hitmakers together in 2023 as well.

“That’s the talk right now is that there will be [more dates],” Walker tells Everything Nash . “I would suspect that there would be some. We’ve talked about doing it early in the year, and then there’s a bunch of offers coming in that we’re looking at. But as much as we are friends, it’s still business. We gotta make money, both of us. We know that it’s selling out pretty much everywhere we go, but getting promoters to buy in; there’s just such a pattern about the way that promoters do it. They do it safely. A lot of those guys got hurt during COVID, and it’s coming back now. So hopefully they see the value in the package. When you’re selling out four or six or seven thousand seats, and people are going crazy, there’s not a lot you need to hype. It’s just there.”

Although the two friends knew they would have fun together — and had tried for years to make this tour happen — Walker never imagined just how much fun they would have, or how much their combined tour would resonate with their fans.

“It’s more than what you could even expect or hope for as a fan,” Walker admits. “Tracy and I, having music that complements each other — and the craziest thing that people don’t know is that we’re actually on stage together doing this show … I don’t think people are understanding that that’s what’s going on. They show up and they see us together. I think it’s good that it’s such a shock. And then we’ll do two and a half to three hours of music, and still leave so much on the table. We literally cannot get all the hits into one show.”

Indeed, although they both have had massively successful solo careers, it’s even more fun when they can combine their talents on their collective hits.

“I’ll sing on ‘Find Out Who Your Friends Are,” which obviously that song lends itself to that because Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney both sang on that with him, but I’ll sing on a few others of his too, like a verse and a chorus,” Walker reveals. “And then he’ll do the same with my songs. He’ll sing on ‘If I Can Make a Living Out of Loving You’  or ‘Then What.’ It’s been spontaneous, but both of us know each other’s music very well. And it’s turned out to be quite a plus for both of us being on there at the same time.”

Walker’s latest album, Texas to Tennessee , is out now. Find music and tour dates at ClayWalker.com .

Tracy Lawrence (born January 27, 1968) is an American country music known for his Southern-rock tinged country jams, he was born in Atlanta, Texas, in the U.S.

Born in Atlanta, TX, U.S. and raised in Foreman, Arkansas, U.S. Lawrence grew up on a solid diet of traditional country and Southern rock. The singer identified his talents and began performing around the local area’s honky tonk circuit before he’d reached 18. After attending college, the singer packed his things and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, U.S. in the hope of finding success. After winning a number of talent shows, which led to a live radio performance Lawrence was noticed by Atlantic Records and signed with them in 1991.

Prior to the release of his debut album, Lawrence was shot four times in a failed mugging in which he fought back allowing his girlfriend to escape in the chivalric act of the century. The move did Lawrence’s album “Sticks and Stones” wonders in the south and was released later in 1991 when the singer was able to promote it. The album’s title track hit No. 1 in the U.S. Country Chart and subsequent songs “Runnin’ Behind”, “Today’s Lonely Fool” and “Somebody Paints the Wall” all reached the Top 10.

Lawrence’s stardom was signed, sealed and delivered with his 1993 follow-up album “Alibis” which was a platinum seller and produced hits such as “Can’t Break It to My Heart” and “My Second Home”.

In 1994 he released the single “Renegades, Rebels and Rogues” which he contributed to the film “Maverick”, and his two subsequent albums “I See It Now” in 1994 and “Time Marches On” in 1996 both produced a number of hits, however marked Lawrence’s commercial and personal decline.

After charges related to hitting and threatening his wife, the singer divorced his partner and lay low before of the autobiographical “Lessons Learned” in 2000. Soon after Lawrence parted ways with Atlantic and made a deal with Warner Bros. Music through which he has released the albums “Strong” in 2004, “For the Love” in 2007 and the Christian cross-over “The Rock” in 2009.

Live reviews

I should start by informing you that this was my 1st. concert in many, many, years. Myself w 2 lady friends went to the Miccosukee Resort & Gaming resort for the Tracy Lawrence (7:30-9:00 PM) & Deana Carter (6:00-7:30 PM) outdoor concerts on July 4th. in SW Miami-Dade County, FL. A very Sunny day w breezes & temps in the mid 80's

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Speaker volume could have been set slightly lower. Tracy was a real trooper singing song after song continuously in the very warm Miami sun. His band was also terrific & they all had obviously rehearsed/played these songs many times prior, they never missed a note or beat. A very talented & professional band.

The only negative was the (audience) turnout for both artists was surprisingly light. I felt bad for both bands; all that talent & effort & showmanship & such a light crowd to appreciate it. I had expected it to be a typical crowded concert, it wasn't by far. It seems backyard barbecues, the beaches & boating won out on this sunny holiday.

Tracy Lawrence is a charismatic country and western singer from Arkansas, U.S.A. He performs this evening at the Grand Ole Opry complete with a fantastic band. The sound of the fiddle and pedal steel guitar counter the melodies that he sings throughout these songs that he penned. His opening song is the country ballad that is led by beautiful fiddle melodies performing glissandos throughout the song. “Paint Me A Birmingham” is the opening track that holds the attention of this audience, and then further when there is a key change into the final chorus. “Lie” is one of his latest songs and one of his favourites to play live. He explains that he just gravitates toward the huge power ballads before playing it. He performs this track with the stripped down sound of just a piano, guitar and violin, accompanying him. The other musicians join him with their harmonies for the infectiously catchy choruses. It’s definitely your cup of tea if you enjoy ballads and country.

As always he and the band did not disappoint .

Love his old stuff and now his new ! Crowd loved him too he gets involved .

I've been a fan since Early 90's and will continue to be.

Kind hearted .. gives back , in many ways this makes him an even better performer .

Had meet and greet this time but that was my only somewhat negative .

Seemed pushed through , hurried for a lack of a better word . Next time I'll be end of line so I can actually chat some !

Concert great ... No complaints .

Looking g forward to next one .

In hopes cruise in the winter !!! Thanks a million keep on keepin on !! Much love and continued blessings.

I have been in Tracy's fanclub for 20 years and I have never been to any show that wasn't great. I always get a meet & greet that I so forward to for weeks. He sang a lot of his older songs which I love. The band sounded great too. Perfect weather and a great night for a Tracy Lawrence concert. But the only bad part about is I am ready for another show now!! Love Tracy's music and always will. Thanks for asking for my feedback!

Quit boring nobody was dancing or sing along until the last part. I was up in the stands clapping dancing and singing along. It was very quite from the people. I am not use to seeing that. I have been to alot of concerts. I went to tracy Lawrence concert in florida.

I thought the show was amazing. In fact, my husband is the fan and I knew little about him. He has a technically skilled band, which was very entertaining and it felt intimate vs. a huge stadium-type of concert. We liked it very much and would recommend his show.

meta.sproles’s profile image

He was lively and still had that amazing voice. It was very very fun . They might want to put fans and Heaters around the place along with spraying for scorpions just because we killed two standing watching Tracy. The band was great!

Tracy Lawrence—one of country’s truest traditionalists—is celebrating over 30 years of nonstop hitmaking. He has garnered numerous CMA and ACM awards and nominations, as well as a Grammy nomination. Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
