When you travel and go through airport security, the first checkpoint involves standing in a long line for a TSA agent to scan your boarding pass and ID.

With CLEAR , you skip the line and enter security through your own designated lane where you check-in and are escorted directly to the physical screening. 

Instead of using traditional ID documents, CLEAR uses your eyes and face to confirm it's really you. This is done by transforming your biometrics into an encrypted code of ones and zeros that are unique to you. 

The platform is Department of Homeland Security- and SAFETY Act-certified.

To use CLEAR, you'll first enroll by filling out a short online application . It takes just a few moments.

Then, you'll visit a participating airport  to get your eyes and fingerprints scanned. Bring one of the following forms of photo identification with you: 

• US Driver's License
• US Passport
• US Passport Card
• US-issued Permanent Resident Card
• State Issued ID
• US Military ID

All forms of identification must be valid, unexpired, not amended, and have a photo. This process takes about five minutes in total. 

You don't have to go out of your way to do this. Most people enroll in person at the same time they are flying out. That's because once in-person registration is complete, you can use the CLEAR lane right away. 

Once you're enrolled and in the designated lane, all you have to do is scan your fingers or eyes at the kiosk to get your identity verified. It takes just seconds.

This means no fumbling for documents or IDs and waiting in a line that seems to loop and turn with no end in sight. 

Once you're done, a CLEAR attendant will escort you to the front of the regular security line where you'll wait your turn to put your belongings through the X-ray scanner and finish the screening process.

A CLEAR Plus membership costs $179 per year with access at all locations where CLEAR is available.

CLEAR Plus members can add up to three adult family members to their account at a discounted rate of $50 per person. Children under 18 are free when traveling with a CLEAR family member with no enrollment required.

Though the two might sound like they're interchangeable, CLEAR isn't a substitute for TSA PreCheck. Here are some key differences:

• TSA PreCheck expedites the security process by putting you in a shorter line to get your documents checked and allows you to keep your shoes, laptops, liquids, belts, and jackets on you. Meanwhile, CLEAR expedites the general security process by letting you bypass the first line for document verification altogether with the biometric screening. If you have TSA PreCheck, you'll move on to the physical screening and still enjoy the benefits of PreCheck. If not, you will be physically screened per the standard rules. In other words, CLEAR members don't have a separate second screening like PreCheck members do, unless they have a membership with both.
• TSA PreCheck members can get randomly excluded and sent to the regular line. CLEAR does not have random exclusions.
• TSA PreCheck only works with certain airlines, though it's available in many more airports nationwide. CLEAR works with any airline, but its rollout in airports is still limited. CLEAR is also available at some sports stadiums. 
• To enroll in TSA PreCheck, you submit an online application and schedule an in-person appointment at an enrollment center. The appointment includes a background check and fingerprinting. To enroll in CLEAR, you submit an online application and visit an airport location where you undergo a background check and fingerprinting. No appointment is necessary and it's much quicker overall. 

CLEAR itself is an attractive option for travel during COVID-19 as it removes waiting in a lengthy general airport security line with no social distancing.

It also facilitates travel during the pandemic with the option to use Health Pass, a free feature on the CLEAR app for members who are 18 and over that connects your verified identity with your health history to create a digital vaccine card. This then syncs with Health Pass to show proof of vaccination for venues and countries that require it.

It may be used in some places to avoid mandatory quarantine, such as Hawaii .

I tried CLEAR this summer when I flew cross country on more than one occasion. The cost was comped by the company for review purposes. 

I signed up online in minutes, per the directions, and added my husband to my family account. Because my infant daughter was well under 18, I did not need to make an account for her.

When I arrived at San Francisco Airport for a 7 a.m. return flight to New York City, despite the early arrival, the security line was already incredibly long. I was thankful to zip past it to a separate area designated for CLEAR with a handful kiosks for checking-in.

Because this was my first time using CLEAR, I needed to finish my enrollment. The company says this should only take five minutes, though mine took at least 10 to 15. Part of this was because we were juggling a baby, but a CLEAR attendant was also required to shepherd us through the process and ours was quite busy helping multiple travelers at once.

All I needed to do, though, was look up my personal information, scan my fingertips and retina, and that was about it.

Once checked in, the attendant printed my boarding pass and I had to wait for a few other guests to finish the process so he could bring us all to the next step in the security screening process. 

My husband, however, who had TSA PreCheck, was guided to a separate line for travelers with the distinction. I went to the security line for general travelers, and while I was able to skip to the front to have my ID checked, I had to wait in a long line to go through the X-ray scanner. CLEAR did not grant privileges to cut it and I had to remove my iPad.

When I flew again a month later, departing from Hartford, Connecticut, I was excited to see if CLEAR would be faster in a smaller airport. Unfortunately, it was not offered there and I waited in the general line from start to finish.

As a former TSA PreCheck holder, I couldn't help but compare the two. When looking at TSA PreCheck vs CLEAR, the differences are, well, quite clear.

TSA PreCheck is cheaper at $85 for five years, whereas CLEAR costs $179 for one year. It's worth noting though that CLEAR is offered at additional venues beyond airports, and if you frequent many sports games or concerts where it is offered, you'll certainly appreciate the shorter line. 

TSA PreCheck also often sees fewer lines overall. It's more widely available whereas CLEAR is limited to a handful of airports. If CLEAR is not offered in your home airport, it's probably not worth it.

However, enrolling in CLEAR is so much easier. Part of the reason why my TSA PreCheck lapsed is that it feels like such a hassle to make an appointment to sign up, which usually takes place in out-of-the-way locations and requires fingerprinting.

Signing up for CLEAR on the other hand takes just a few moments and you can do it on the way to your flight from your mobile device. You can still cut to the front of the first security line, and if the X-ray scanner isn't backed up, it's a great way to speed up travel through an airport terminal.

Choosing which one is best really depends on the types of venues you visit most often and whether CLEAR is offered in the airport from where you're most likely to depart.

If you travel frequently out of CLEAR's participating airports and want to save yourself time and anxiety, CLEAR is a worthwhile investment to consider. And with the following two deals, it's well worth trying out to see if it's a good fit for your needs.

Pualani Platinum, Pualani Gold, and Premier Club members can purchase a membership at $149, and HawaiianMiles members can get a discounted price of $179.

Pualani Platinum members who have over 75,000 flight miles can enroll in a complimentary annual CLEAR Plus membership.

If you’re a student, you’re eligible for  special student pricing of $60 a year for 4 years.

CLEAR partners with a third-party service to confirm eligibility, but if you’re a student, this is one of the cheapest ways to get CLEAR.

If you’re joining as a family, you can add adult family members at $99 a person per year. 

According to CLEAR, “family” doesn’t necessarily need to be your biological family: “whether it is your biological family, chosen family, or friends that feel like family. It’s totally up to you!” Children under 18 do not need to enroll and can join any CLEAR member in line for free.

Following a 1-time enrollment, CLEAR will connect your biometrics (e.g., face, iris) to your personal identity, making it possible for you to speed through airport and sports venue security using only the blink of your eye.

The CLEAR platform aims to create a smoother experience for its members, from biometric airport boarding passes to biometric airport lounge access and easy access to sports venues and concessions. When you become a CLEAR member, your standard ID, ticket, and boarding pass are simply replaced by your eyes.

This means you’ll no longer need to remove your wallet from your purse or pocket. Members enroll or verify at any CLEAR pod at the participating location, and then a CLEAR Ambassador escorts you through the dedicated CLEAR lanes.

Any U.S. citizen and legal permanent resident who has reached the age of 18 is eligible for enrollment in CLEAR.

The program is not open to international residents, though they likely wouldn’t receive many benefits unless they travel extensively within the U.S.

The only restriction is that the full name on your application must match the name on your photo ID.

Unlike Global Entry and other expedited programs, CLEAR members have no background check . This is because you are not receiving any expedited or reduced screening by being a CLEAR member.

The program matches your eye and identity with your boarding pass, so you don’t have to present your ID to a TSA officer. From there, you’re still assigned access to the regular security lanes or TSA PreCheck (if you have that program).

CLEAR offers accelerated touchless screening for members going through airport identification security lines before any physical screening. Currently, CLEAR is working on an airport expansion to create a smooth experience from curb to gate for all members.

Eventually, this would include baggage check and claim, boarding, airport lounge access, and security checkpoints . Once you become an enrolled CLEAR member, you can utilize this service anywhere that CLEAR is found. The other CLEAR program benefits include:

CLEAR does not bypass you from participating in security processes, including passing your bags through X-rays or walking through a metal detector. As a CLEAR member, your eyes will speed you through the participating airport and stadium identification lines faster.

With CLEAR, you can breeze through the identification inspection process at more than 70 airports and sports venues nationwide. CLEAR members can speed through the entire security process from start to finish in less than 5 minutes on average since CLEAR lanes allow members to proceed to the very front of the security queues.

Take, for example, an airport like Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), where many travelers have TSA PreCheck due to being government workers. TSA PreCheck and regular security lines can be long, especially during peak travel periods like Monday morning or Friday afternoon.

With CLEAR, once your ID matches your boarding pass, you will proceed to the front of the security lines. So, no matter how long the TSA PreCheck or standard security lines are, once you’re done with the CLEAR process, you head straight to the front, right where you put your bags into the scanner.

This process of having your eye scanned and matched to your boarding pass rarely (if ever) takes longer than about 2 minutes, at which point you’ll proceed through the metal detector like normal to complete the rest of your screening process.

CLEAR has also partnered with Uber for a Home to Gate program via the CLEAR app, where users can track security wait times and call an Uber in time to take them to the airport and get through security in perfect timing for their flight.

CLEAR is a great way to speed to the front of any long security queues. Processing only takes a few moments.

Another way to save even more time is by using Reserve by CLEAR . This program, available at select airports, allows you to enter your flight information to reserve a time to go through security. When you arrive at the airport, you can scan your QR code (in an email after you reserve your spot) in the specially marked Reserve Lane to proceed through the standard security line without waiting.

They’ll try to solicit your business by encouraging you to enroll, so be vigilant about the offer they may present and always ensure you’re getting the cheapest CLEAR membership possible.

Here are the easy steps to use CLEAR:

• Get in the CLEAR lane. Usually, these are right next to the regular security lines.
• You’ll check in  at a pod using an iris scan as verification. An ambassador will open the pod and escort you to the checkpoint.
• Once you’re finished verifying your identity, you can put your ID away . You won’t need to show this to the TSA officer.
• You’ll proceed through the TSA checkpoint as normal . If you have TSA PreCheck, you can use those lanes; otherwise, you’ll use the regular lanes.

How CLEAR Works With TSA PreCheck

If you have TSA PreCheck, CLEAR staff will see the TSA PreCheck eligibility on your boarding pass and escort you to TSA PreCheck expedited lanes for screening.

By visiting the CLEAR website before your upcoming flight, you can find out which CLEAR lanes are next to a TSA PreCheck.

CLEAR does not come with TSA PreCheck. For the best possible travel experience, use a premium credit card to get Global Entry membership for free , which also comes with TSA PreCheck. Then, enroll in CLEAR separately.

Once you are a CLEAR member, just log into your account to access your Family Plan. Here, you can add up to 3 adult family members at $99 each per year.

Children under 18 who are accompanied by a CLEAR member have access to the CLEAR lane free of charge, so you don’t need to add them to your account. Kids this age don’t need identification when traveling through the TSA checkpoint, which is why CLEAR allows them to proceed.

At stadiums, you can take 1 person with you in CLEAR security lanes, so you don’t need a second membership for a companion in those scenarios.

Currently, CLEAR is only available to citizens and legal permanent of the U.S.

Currently, members can utilize CLEAR at 70+ stadiums and airports that cover much of the country’s domestic departure traffic. Opening times and specific location information for each checkpoint are available on the CLEAR website .

All full membership CLEAR users are eligible to access CLEAR at sports venues. If you don’t have a normal CLEAR membership, you can enroll in a special CLEAR Sports version , which is free but only valid at sports stadiums and not at airports.

Using CLEAR Health Pass , you can upload vaccination information, medical history, and other pertinent data to share with others. CLEAR can verify this information, which can be used for businesses or other entities to trust that the medical information being shared is truthful.

How You Apply

Applying for CLEAR only takes a few minutes; no appointment is necessary. You can begin the application online to save more time. Once enrolled, you can begin using CLEAR that same day.

You do not need an appointment to enroll in CLEAR. Unlike Global Entry or other expedited traveler programs, CLEAR enrollment can be done at the airport.

What You Need

CLEAR is open to individuals 18 and older. For enrolling, you’ll need one of the following photo identification forms. All identification must be valid, unexpired, unamended, and contain a photo:

Re-registering for CLEAR

If you were a former member of the old CLEAR program, CLEAR will honor whatever time remains on that account. This will be credited to you when you reactivate your account by logging in to your account .

Don’t remember your original password? Just follow the instructions for establishing a new one. The CLEAR program no longer uses CLEAR cards (if you were issued one). Once you reactivate your account, you can use the CLEAR lanes immediately.

Renewing Your CLEAR Membership

To renew an existing CLEAR membership, log in to your account . After selecting Reactivate, you’ll be set — you don’t have to update your biometrics because CLEAR will still have them on file. You will just need to pay the annual membership fee.

A Full Guide to Clear Plus Airport Security: How It Works and Where You Can Use it

Here's how to use Clear Plus, which lets you speed through airport check-in lines in minutes.

Navigating airports can be stressful enough without the added pressure that comes with lengthy security screening lines. For travelers looking for a speedy and simple way to breeze through security and lighten their loads when traveling, there is a better way.

Clear is a company that utilizes biometrics to allow individuals to identify themselves in just a few seconds with the scan of a finger or an eye. More than 12 million people use its products, which are currently available across 71 locations in the U.S., including 53 airports and 18 arenas and stadiums. And while you'll have to pay a fee to access its services at the airport, the service is free to use anywhere else it's available.

Below, we've broken down everything you need to know about how the Clear works, from the complimentary access you'll get at stadiums and arenas to the upgraded Clear Plus membership that cuts down the time you spend in security lines at the airport. We'll also dig into where else it can be used and how Clear Plus is different from other airport security services such as TSA Pre-Check and Global Entry.

What is Clear?

Clear taps into biometric scanning technology to let travelers skip tedious airport security and identification procedures — and the lines leading up to them. Instead of fumbling for your ID, you'll be able to use your fingerprints and iris image scans to confirm your identity, and head straight to the security metal detectors and bag scanners, no waiting required. Clear can also be used for the same purpose in select U.S. arenas and stadiums (see the list below) or to shorten your wait for a rental car. The service can also be used to verify your identity on LinkedIn .

Note that while Clear and its various Powered By Clear iterations (such as Reserve) are free to sign up for and use, you will need to pay for the upgraded membership to Clear Plus to bypass the usual ID check at airport security.

How Does Clear Plus Work at the Airport?

At the terminal, Clear Plus members will find dedicated lanes where a Clear Ambassador will help you scan either your fingerprint or eye and your boarding pass. From there, you'll be taken to the front of the security screening line and ushered through by a TSA agent; no need to show a boarding pass or ID.

How does Reserve Powered by Clear work?

Say you don't want to pay for the upgraded Clear Plus membership but still want to save some time at the airport on your next trip. Reserve Powered by Clear lets you book a spot in the security line for up to 10 people — as long as everyone shows up at the same time — so you can go through and show your ID at a specified time. Note that this free service does not allow you to access the Clear Plus lane for expedited security, as that's just for paid members.

The service is currently available in 19 international and domestic airports: Amsterdam (AMS), Berlin (BER), Calgary (YYC), Denver (DEN), Edmonton (YEG), Frankfurt (FRA), Halifax (YHZ), Hannover (HAJ), Los Angeles (LAX), Minneapolis (MSP), Montreal (YUL), New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Orlando (MCO), Phoenix (PHX), Rome (FCO), Seattle (SEA), Toronto (YYZ), and Vancouver (YVR).

How Does Clear Work Everywhere Else?

Some stadiums also have a dedicated Clear lane where members can enjoy expedited entry, though they will still be required to undergo physical security for bag checks. Thanks to a partnership between Clear and Major League Baseball, members can also take advantage of biometric ticketing without needing a physical or mobile ticket on-hand. Besides biometric ticketing, some stadiums, such as Lumen Field in Seattle, have used Clear to replace ID age validation and credit card usage to get alcohol and concessions, a feature the company plans to roll out at additional venues down the line.

The company is currently looking into adding more spaces where the identification service can replace the need for cash, credit cards, and physical forms of ID, particularly when it comes to checking into hotels, making rental car reservations, and shopping.

How Much Does Clear Cost?

While you can sign up for a free account to access Reserve by Clear and Clear's services at stadiums, arenas, and the Avis rental car counter , a Clear Plus membership for use at the airport costs $189 a year. You can also add access for up to three additional family members or friends to your membership for $70 more per year, while those under the age of 18 can enter the Clear lane with a member free of charge.

Delta SkyMiles members are eligible for discounted Clear Plus rates . Diamond Medallion and Delta 360° members receive complimentary access while Platinum, Gold, and Silver Medallion members and eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express cardholders can purchase an annual membership for $40 less. General SkyMiles members can save $10.

Clear Plus is complimentary for United Premier 1K and Global Services members, while Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum, and those with certain United co-branded credit cards can save $40 per year. MileagePlus members pay $179 per year.

Members of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan at the MVP, MVP Gold, MVP Gold 75K and MVP Gold 100K levels can earn 1,500 miles the first time they enroll in Clear Plus (at the $179 per year discounted partner rate) plus another 1,250 miles upon renewal each year.

Who Is Eligible for the Clear Program?

You'll need to be 18 years or older to apply for Clear and must have one of the following forms of valid and unamended photo identification: A U.S. driver's license, a U.S. passport, a U.S. passport card, a U.S.-issued permanent resident card, a state issued ID, a U.S. military ID, or a Global Entry card.

How to enroll in Clear

Signing up for a complimentary Clear membership takes just five minutes and you can start using its lanes immediately once the enrollment process is complete.

If you're enrolling in Clear Plus at the airport, a Clear Ambassador will need to validate your ID (acceptable types are listed above) before taking your biometrics (a fingerprint, an eye scan, and a photo of your face) to create a profile. You'll also need to answer a few questions to verify your identity and provide a method of payment. While you can begin the process online , you will need to be present at a physical Clear location to make it official.

Is There a Way to do a Free Trial for Clear Plus?

Clear offers a special promotion through its website that lets new members enjoy a two-month free trial . Simply sign up online, then complete your enrollment at a Clear airport location the next time you travel. Don't forget to bring your government-issued photo ID for verification. Be aware that you'll be charged the regular $189 annual fee once your free trial ends. There are also no extensions if you don't end up traveling during your trial period, so save it for when you've got some trips coming up.

Which Credit Cards Come with Clear Plus Membership as a Cardholder Benefit?

There are currently four credit cards that offer an annual statement credit of $189, which is meant to cover your Clear Plus sign-up fee: the American Express Green Card, The Platinum Card from American Express, The Business Platinum Card from American Express, and the American Express Centurion Black Card (available by invite only). Note that the Platinum and Business Platinum cards also offer a $100 statement credit to cover the cost of your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership. By having one of those cards, you could use Clear and TSA PreCheck to whiz through the entire security screening process on your next flight (or, alternatively, Clear for your flight out of the U.S., and Global Entry for your return trip). What is the Difference Between Clear Plus and TSA PreCheck?

While both of these services provide quicker navigation through the airport, Clear Plus and PreCheck can actually be used hand in hand. Clear Plus members can still use a dedicated lane to skip long security lines to verify their ID, and can then be taken to the PreCheck screening lane to avoid having to remove their shoes, belt, and liquids from their carry-on baggage as long as they are signed up for PreCheck as well (a five-year membership costs $78 and can be renewed online for $70 or in-person for $78). Check to see if any of your current credit cards offer a credit for TSA PreCheck membership as an included perk.

What is the Difference Between Clear Plus and Global Entry?

For those who plan on taking a ton of international trips, Global Entry is a valuable service, as it allows you to skip long lines at customs upon your return to the U.S. Having this in your arsenal can be especially worthwhile if you've got a tight connection between your initial U.S. airport of entry and your final destination. While the sign-up process involves multiple steps, including creating a Trusted Traveler Programs account, paying the $100 fee, and being interviewed, your membership will be valid for five years. Think of it this way: Clear Plus is what you use when you're leaving a U.S. airport, while Global Entry is what you use when you're re-entering one.

When is a Clear Membership Worth It?

If you're someone who hates having to dig for your ID every time you pass through a security check, whether you're at an arena, stadium, the rental car counter, or the airport, this service might sound appealing. Security lines can sometimes be very long and when you're in a hurry, every minute counts. Signing up for a complimentary Clear account is a no-brainer, especially if you frequently attend sporting events or concerts. The upgraded airport membership, Clear Plus, may also be worth it if you fly a lot, though it's a good idea to make sure you don't already have access to this paid service through your current credit card before paying the fee.

Is 'Clear' The Big Secret To Getting Through TSA As Fast As Possible?

W aiting in line to go through airport security is somewhat akin to watching paint dry or grass grow. Even if you avoid all the airport security mistakes that can slow you down , anything that can speed the process along is appreciated. That's where CLEAR comes in, but whether it actually gets you through TSA faster than any other security option seems to depend on what airport you're using.

You may have figured out already if TSA PreCheck or Global Entry are better for you , but what about CLEAR? It's important to understand what CLEAR is to understand how it can (or can't) make your trip through TSA more efficient. While TSA PreCheck and Global Entry are both government programs, CLEAR, which started in 2010, is a private company that lets you skip waiting for a TSA agent to look at your ID and confirm that it's you. Instead, with your CLEAR Plus membership, you'll have your identity confirmed via fingerprints and an eye scan at a kiosk, and then you go straight to getting your bags scanned. See you later, ID line!

Clear Has Advantages But Not Every Traveler Experiences Them All The Time

You still have to remove your liquids and laptop as you get your luggage screened unless you also have TSA PreCheck. So, with the powers of a CLEAR Plus membership and a TSA PreCheck Known Traveler Number (KTN) combined, that could be the quickest way through security — CLEAR can help you skip waiting to get your ID checked (which you still have to do with PreCheck, though it's faster than the regular line) and PreCheck can help you skip some of the hassle at your baggage goes through security.

CLEAR has now expanded its service to include allowing people to sign up for or renew TSA PreCheck at some CLEAR locations without having to wait for or make an appointment. That should make it easier and quicker for you to get access to all the ways that you can fast-forward your airport security experience.

While there is a clear theoretical advantage to always being able to skip the ID line with CLEAR, some CLEAR members have complained about still encountering long lines. One person posted on X , formerly known as Twitter, "The Clear lines are longer than the regular lines, with correspondingly longer wait times. Why should I pay to wait longer to get through airport security? The value just isn't there any more." Another person wrote , "What's the point of having TSA with @Clear if the line is longer than without both."

Clear Comes At A Higher Cost Than Other Screening Options

Another thing to consider is that CLEAR is not at nearly as many airports as TSA PreCheck — it's in near 60 while TSA PreCheck is at over 200 airports. If your home airport isn't one of those five dozen or so CLEAR airports, the membership isn't going to do you as much good. Even if your home airport does have CLEAR, based on social media posts about problems at some airports with CLEAR staffing, it could be worth observing the CLEAR line the next time you're at the airport to see if it does seem shorter and to be moving more quickly as you decide if it's worth it.

Because you do pay more for CLEAR than for any other airport security screening option. It's $189, and you have to pay that every year — with TSA PreCheck, it's under $100, and it's good for five years. However, there are some credit cards and airline rewards programs, like United Mileage Plus and Delta SkyMiles, that will give you a discount on your CLEAR Plus membership.

All those things considered, the speed and efficiency of CLEAR may depend on the airport, and its higher price point could be off-putting for some travelers. Scope out the situation at your local airport for a bit before you take the CLEAR plunge.

Clear is now enrolling people for TSA PreCheck at these airports

There's a new way to enroll in the Transportation Security Administration's PreCheck program to help get through airport security lines faster. 

Clear, a private identity screening company , is now enrolling passengers in TSA PreCheck at select airports across the U.S. The announcement makes Clear the third company to partner with the TSA to expand enrollment options for low-risk travelers. 

Previously, Telos and Idemia were the only enrollment providers for TSA PreCheck, which launched in 2013 and now has more than 19 million members. The program provides customers with a dedicated line and lets them keep their shoes and jackets on while going through screening. They can also keep their laptops and liquids in their bags. According to TSA, PreCheck lane wait times are under 10 minutes, compared with 30-minute wait times in standard lanes. 

"The TSA PreCheck trusted traveler program enables vetted, low-risk travelers to move through security more efficiently," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement Tuesday. "Additional enrollment providers make it easier for the public to enroll and enjoy a seamless travel experience." 

Clear CEO Caryn Seidman-Becker said the company's enrollment opportunities provide passengers with "a fast and efficient airport experience."

"This is a win-win for U.S. travelers who will have access to more enrollment locations, expanded hours and other benefits," she said in a statement.

Clear charges $77.95 for TSA PreCheck. Idemia's enrollment fee is $78, and Telos' is $85.

Here's where it's available

Clear's TSA PreCheck enrollment and renewal services are now available at three U.S. airports. 

Passengers can enroll in-person at Orlando International Airport, Sacramento International Airport or at Newark Liberty International Airport. Memberships last for five years.

What is Clear, and how does it work?

As an expedited security program, Clear allows you to bypass the two-step Transportation Security Administration security process at domestic airports by completing the identity verification step via biometric authentication (that is, by using your personal biological traits such as fingerprints) in a separate lane solely dedicated to Clear users.

After successfully verifying your identity with either a fingerprint or an iris scan at a Clear kiosk, a Clear representative will take you to the TSA security screening line — either the TSA PreCheck line or the standard TSA line.

As of December, travelers can use Clear at 54 airports nationally, as well as at stadiums and other large venues.

Who can sign up for Clear?

To sign up for Clear, you must meet three qualifications:

• Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
• Be at least 18 years old
• Have one of the following forms of photo identification: U.S. driver's license, U.S. passport, U.S. passport card, U.S.-issued permanent resident card, state-issued ID or U.S. military ID

Travelers under 18, such as family members, may use the Clear line for free if accompanied by a Clear member.

Once you are a Clear member, you can log in to your account on Clear's website and add up to three family members for $99 each per year.

How to sign up for Clear

To sign up for Clear, you can either start the enrollment process online and finish at a Clear location, or you can complete the entire process at a Clear location. Either way, users must complete the final enrollment steps in person at a Clear location.

The sign-up and enrollment process should only take a few minutes. In person, you'll be asked to verify your identity, attach your biometrics and show a valid photo ID.

Additionally, you'll be asked to enter your name, email address and payment information for the $189 enrollment fee.

Ways to save on Clear

New users can receive a free two-month trial of Clear by using this link . Clear members can also refer friends for two free months.

Additionally, a few credit cards offer cardholders a free Clear membership as a perk. The following cards will reimburse you for up to $189 per year in Clear Plus membership costs:

• American Express® Green Card
• The Platinum Card® from American Express
• The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
• The Centurion Card from American Express

Delta Platinum Medallion, Gold Medallion and Silver Medallion members, plus United Premier Platinum, Premier Gold and Premier Silver members, can pay a reduced rate of $149.

FlyClear was the first version of the Registered Traveler Program that is now operating as CLEAR on ClearMe.com.

The program was operated by Verified Identity Pass and reached over 200,000 members before it ceased operations on June 22, 2009.

Clear Now Offers TSA PreCheck Enrollment

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced a new partnership with Clear, making it the third TSA PreCheck enrollment provider.

TSA PreCheck is a program that gives members access to dedicated lines at airport security checkpoints. Members don’t have to remove shoes, belts, or light jackets when they go through the scanner. Plus, they can keep laptops and liquids in their carry-on luggage. More than 200 airports and 90 airlines provide TSA PreCheck.

Clear is a separate program that uses biometric data (like a fingerprint or eye scan) to speed travelers through airport security. Once Clear members use a kiosk to scan their biometrics, they skip the regular security and TSA PreCheck lines and proceed straight to the physical screening portion.

You can have both Clear and TSA PreCheck. The first will skip you to the front of the line, and the second will give you access to the lane where you don’t have to take off your shoes, belt or jacket.

The new partnership between TSA and Clear will make it even easier for people to enroll in or renew TSA PreCheck since no appointments are required. It will also save applicants time and money if they enroll in both expedited security programs.

TSA PreCheck and Clear costs

TSA PreCheck costs vary depending on the enrollment provider. Registering for TSA PreCheck through Clear will cost $77.95 for a five-year membership. Online TSA PreCheck renewals through Clear will cost $68.95 for five years.

That’s a few cents cheaper than enrolling with Idemia and a few dollars cheaper than enrolling with Telos. Generally, it’s best to enroll with whichever enrollment provider has locations that are convenient for you.

You can often get your TSA PreCheck application costs covered with a travel credit card as well. These credit cards usually provide a statement credit that’ll reimburse you for the cost of TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. Here are some popular cards that offer this benefit:

Where to find Clear TSA PreCheck enrollment

Currently, Clear only offers enrollment for TSA PreCheck at three airports:

Sacramento International Airport.

Newark Liberty International Airport.

Orlando International Airport.

Enrollment for TSA PreCheck at all three participating airports is available daily from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time. Except at Sacramento International Airport, where enrollment closes on Saturdays at 6 p.m.

Clear plans to expand to other airports in the future.

How to enroll at TSA PreCheck at the airport

You can’t exactly just show up to the airport to enroll in TSA PreCheck through Clear. If you want to enroll through one of the Clear airport locations, you’ll have to submit an application online first.

Then, the next time you’re at a participating airport, walk up to Clear’s enrollment pod (no appointment necessary). Clear will submit your TSA PreCheck application on your behalf, and you can expect to hear back within three to five days.

Senate Approves Bill to Reauthorize F.A.A. and Improve Air Travel

The Senate also passed a short-term extension of the current F.A.A. law to give the House time to clear the longer-term package early next week.

The Senate on Thursday passed legislation to reauthorize federal aviation programs for the next five years and put in place new safety measures and consumer protections for passengers, at a moment of intense uncertainty and disruption in the air travel system.

The bill , which still must win final approval in the House before becoming law, would provide more than $105 billion to the Federal Aviation Administration and another $738 million to the National Transportation Safety Board for airport modernization, technology programs and safety. It would also bolster the hiring and training of air traffic controllers, codify airlines’ refund obligations to passengers, ensure fee-free family seating and strengthen protections for passengers with disabilities.

“Aviation safety has been front of mind for millions of Americans recently, and this F.A.A. bill is the best thing Congress can do to give Americans the peace of mind they deserve,” Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the majority leader, said on the Senate floor on Thursday evening.

It passed in an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 88 to 4, just one day before the current law is scheduled to lapse. The Senate also unanimously approved a short-term extension to allow time for the House to take up and clear the longer-term package next week, a step that would send it to President Biden.

The legislation is a bipartisan compromise negotiated over months by the Senate and House committees with jurisdiction over the F.A.A., after Congress authorized several short-term extensions of the agency when lawmakers failed to meet earlier deadlines. The House passed its version of the bill almost a year ago in a lopsided vote of 351 to 69.

Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington, chairwoman of the Commerce Committee, celebrated the bill’s provisions on consumer protections, aviation safety, air traffic controllers, airport infrastructure and work force development on the floor after passage.

“This is a big moment for aviation,” Ms. Cantwell said. “We have had safety issues and concerns that we need to make a big investment. This legislation is that investment — in safety standards, in protecting consumers and advancing a work force and technology that will allow the United States to be the gold standard in aviation.”

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, the top Republican on the Commerce Committee, said: “This legislation is a strong, bipartisan, bicameral bill that includes hundreds of priorities for senators and representatives, both Republican and Democrat. This bill gives the FAA the safety tools it needs at a critical time.”

As one of the few remaining bills considered a must-pass item this year, the F.A.A. package, which prompted several regional disputes, became a magnet for dozens of amendments and policy riders that threatened to delay it in the Senate.

With the legislation threatening to stall, the House on Wednesday approved a one-week extension for the F.A.A. before leaving Washington for the weekend. The Senate followed suit on Thursday, steering around lingering disputes that had threatened to scuttle the effort and cause a brief lapse for the F.A.A.

The debate came at a time of acute uncertainty about the aviation system, which has had a recent spate of concerning episodes such as dangerous near collisions on runways, plane malfunctions and thousands of flight delays and cancellations.

It was unclear for much of Thursday whether the Senate would be able to push through the legislation and the extension, as senators demanded votes on amendments or threatened to block speedy passage. No amendments were ultimately brought to a vote.

The most intense regional fight was over a provision in the bill that would add five round-trip long-haul flights out of Ronald Reagan National Airport outside Washington. Proponents, which include Delta Air Lines, have said they want to expand access to the nation’s capital and increase competition.

The proposal incensed lawmakers representing the area , who argued that the airport maintains the busiest runway in the country and cannot support additional flights. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner of Virginia and Benjamin L. Cardin and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, all Democrats, filed an amendment to strike the new flights.

Mr. Kaine and Mr. Warner threatened to hold the bill up if they did not receive a vote. But Mr. Cruz blocked an effort to bring up a compromise amendment that would have given the transportation secretary the final say on new flights after considering any effects they would have on delays and passenger safety.

“The Senate abdicated its responsibility to protect the safety of the 25 million people who fly through D.C.A. every year,” Mr. Kaine and Mr. Warner said in a statement. “Some of our colleagues were too afraid to let the experts make the call. They didn’t want to show the American people that they care more about a few lawmakers’ desire for direct flights than they care about the safety and convenience of the traveling public. That is shameful and an embarrassment.”

The senators from Virginia and Maryland were the only votes against the bill.

Another group of senators failed to secure a vote on a proposal to halt the Transportation Security Administration’s expansion of facial recognition technology at airports and restrict it where it is in use.

Senators had also proposed adding a number of unrelated bills, including one that would compensate people harmed by exposure to the nation’s nuclear weapons program , legislation to fully fund the replacement of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, and a credit card competition measure. Senators Marsha Blackburn, Republican of Tennessee, and Richard Blumenthal, Democrat of Connecticut, were pushing for a vote on their bill to protect minors online into Thursday. None of them made it into the final product.
