Copenhagen’s Best: The Ultimate Self-Guided Walking Tour of the City

Copenhagen is the vibrant capital city of the Scandinavian country Denmark. It is a city filled with so much energy, making you want to stay forever. The delightful fusion of history and innovation can be seen everywhere in Copenhagen. It is also very compact, with everything so close to each other that you will have so much to explore without having to travel from end to end.

This charming city is filled with picturesque canals, a combination of brightly colored row houses, stylish urban buildings, peppy street art, and of course, cobblestoned streets. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in this enchanting city is to wander around on foot. We enjoyed walking around Copenhagen and wanted to take you all along on our journey with this self-guided walking tour with all the hidden gems we found on our visit.

Copenhagen's skyline from the Stairway to Heaven.

Oh yeah! We have included a nice map marking all the places for you to start using it right away, hassle-free. For convenience, we have made the entire route in a loop so you can start with any location closer to your stay. You need not travel far to just begin your walking tour.

Be prepared to walk a lot, but feel free to use the city’s extensive public transport when the distance between two places is a bit long. I have also suggested where and how you can alternatively choose to use public transport instead of walking. But the entire tour is completely doable only by foot, and don’t forget to take multiple coffee and snack breaks to cozy up in the Hyggelig cafes of Copenhagen.

Why Take a Self-Guided Walking Tour of Copenhagen?

There are many guided walking tours that you could take in Copenhagen, but this self-guided walking tour is entirely flexible. Also, some of those guided walking tours could be a bit expensive. But I will also link some guided tours you could take during your visit.

Self-guided walking tours are not just budget-friendly but also a way to experience the city in a short time. Pre-booking tours can be a hassle sometimes. I always procrastinate making the bookings till the last moment until I forget or there are no more slots in the time I want. If you are like me, then this is perfect for you.

Good to know!

  • Copenhagen is a bike-friendly city, but it is not recommendable to do this as a bike tour on your own as it could be dangerous if you don’t have the experience. You could always go on a guided bike or a segway tour, where you need not worry about the route and where to stop and park.
  • Danish people are very friendly and nice, but they don’t like it when you walk on their bike lanes. To avoid pissing someone off, always stick to the well-laid pedestrian paths.
  • While crossing a road, look out for speeding cyclists on both sides. Sometimes they just appear out of nowhere, and you will find yourself on the ground.
  • Have fun exploring, and don’t be afraid to stray away from the route. Every place is well connected, and you might just find some new interesting places. (If you find something, do let me know. I will be thrilled to hear all about it).

Tip!  Feel free to start the tour from any of the stops, as the entire route is a loop. Starting at Kongens Nytorv means your first stop is the Instagram-famous Nyhavn (the picture of the colorful houses by the canal is probably the first thing you will see when you search Copenhagen).

The Walking Route

How To Use The Map?

The locations from the walking route are numbered in the map. If required, zoom in and click on a number to view brief details about the location. Click ‘View in Google Maps’ to view the location’s complete details in Google Maps.

If you are planning to do the walking tour early in the morning, start with Nyhavn to escape the crowd, enjoy the views, and capture some great pictures. (Who doesn’t like a good picture?)

Let’s get started!

1. Kongens Nytorv

Kongens Nytorv, which literally means New King’s Square, is a “square” in central Copenhagen. It was built by King Christian V in the 17th century when the city walls were expanded. He had some strategic plans about making this the royal square, and the design was inspired by French architecture.

The lands around the square were later given to wealthy citizens of that time interested in constructing some notable buildings with specific conditions on their facades.

Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen.

No wonder you could spot so many important buildings around the square with stunning architectural styles.

To the southern end, you could spot the Danish Royal Theater. Charlottenborg palace is located to the east and a luxurious 5-star hotel  Hotel D’Angleterre  on the west.

Kongens Nytorv is a noteworthy place to begin our tour (not just because of its proximity to Nyhavn). It could be a convenient location with easy accessibility to its metro station, which runs on all 4 lines.

Psst!   If you are wondering what that little quaint-looking kiosk located north of the square was, you are looking at Copenhagen’s former first telephone booth. It was constructed in a new-baroque style with handmade decorations. Now it is a coffee house. But doesn’t it look cute? The copper roofing gives the classic teal tint adding more charm to it.

Route Guide

Walk towards the eastern side of the square and take the exit towards the colorful houses, and you will reach your next stop at around 250m.

2. Charlottenborg Palace

Before being carried away by Nyhavn’s charm, check out the Charlottenborg Palace at the entrance of the colorful street of Nyhavn. Look around in the opposite direction of the row houses from where the canal starts. You will be looking at the Charlottenborg Palace, which once was the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and currently houses the art gallery museum as  Kunsthal Charlottenborg.

Walk alongside the canal, which starts near the Charlottenborg Palace.

Nyhavn is indeed colorful and has quite a captivating charm. The 17th and 18th-century row houses painted in bright colors are located along the canal side, filled with bars, cafes, and restaurants. This is not just a tourist delight; the locals also enjoy sipping a cold beer on a hot day, which makes it quite expensive.

The buildings of Nyhavn with several boats docked in the canal.

This canal, docked with wooden ships, was once a bustling commercial port where ships worldwide would dock. The harbor was once packed with sailors who frequented the pubs and prostitution houses. Now all the old houses in the area are mostly renovated into restaurants, bars, and cafes. Nyhavn is also one of the main stops of the canal tours.

Tip!   Instead of visiting these cafes and bars priced for tourists, grab a hot dog or beer from the local shops, sit by the canal, and enjoy the views.

Psst!   If you want to capture some postcard pictures in Nyhavn, arriving early is the key. The place gets packed with people even on a cold winter morning once the canal tours open. Plan your visit at least an hour before the first canal tour of the day.

Also, watch your feet while you pose for pictures along the canal side. Falling into the waters, especially during winter, is not a pleasant experience at all. (We actually saw someone fall!)

The buildings of Nyhavn with their cafes. A bike rider is riding a bike on a nearby bridge.

Walk along the canal through Nyhavn on the side of the colorful houses till the end of the street, take a right along  71 Nyhavn Hotel,  and walk further until you reach the Danish Playhouse. The walk from  Nyhavn 17  to the theatre is about 450m.

4. Ofelia Plads and the Danish Playhouse

The Danish Royal Playhouse is an example of the modern architecture of Copenhagen. Do not hesitate to go take a peek at the beautiful cafe. Walk a little further from the Playhouse, and you will reach Ofelia Plads, which is just another square but on the waterfront. You can see great views of the Opera house across the canal to your right.

A large boat docked at Copenhagen's waterfront.

Walk towards the street along the canal on the left side of Ofelia Plads. Keeping walking for another 500m until you reach Amalienborg, the queen’s residence.

5. Amalienborg Palace

Visit the seat of one of the world’s oldest monarchies at Amalienborg Palace. However, only parts of the palace are open to the public. The rest remains the private residence of the Danish Royal family.

Amalienborg Palace has been the royal residence since the major fire which burned down their former residence of Christiansborg Palace.

Try to time your visit to watch the changing of guards ceremony, which happens here every day at 12:00 noon. You could also see the marching of the guards, which starts at 11:30 am from the Rosenborg Castle through the streets of the city ending up at the Amalienborg Palace at 12:00 pm. The length of the ceremony depends on the member of the Royal Palace who is at the palace on the given day. It is quite the site to watch, no matter if any of the royal family members are present or not during your visit.

You could see a building with a big teal-colored dome from the Amalienborg Palace. Walk towards the building for around 250m.

6. Frederik’s Church

You can spot the dome of Frederik’s church from many places as it marks an important landmark of Copenhagen’s skyline. This 18th-century church, also known as the marble church (Marmorkirken), has the largest dome in Scandinavia. It was primarily built in limestone due to budget constraints. But the original plan was to use marble throughout to reflect its name.

The church has the words “HERRENS ORD BLIVER EVINDELIG” inscribed in big golden letterings on the front portico, which means  “The word of the Lord endureth forever.”

It looks pretty stunning with its Rococo interiors. The church is free for the public to enter, so try to get a sneak peek if it isn’t too crowded.

On selected days, it is also possible to climb the dome to get aerial views of the city.

Psst!  I recommend going up the Church of Our Saviour or the Round Tower (which you will see later in the walking tour) as the aerial views of Frederik’s Church dome adorn Copenhagen’s skyline so beautifully.

Frederik's church in Copenhagen.

Photo tip!   If you want to capture a picture of the church without too many people walking on the busy road, walk around the church to the backside, which almost resembles the front. You might have a better chance of getting a nice picture from there.

Roopesh and Kiki from RooKiExplorers posing in front of Frederik's church in Copenhagen.

Walk around 800m to the next stop, St Alban’s Church. Along the way, you can see Denmark’s Design museum, an 18th-century Rococo-style building.

7. St. Alban’s Church

St. Alban’s church is an English-style church built in a Gothic Revival Style. The church was built during the 19th century to serve the growing English population in the city. It remains one of the very few churches in Copenhagen to conduct services in English. The church is free for the public but only open from April to September.

The Saint Alban's Church in Copenhagen.

Walk around the church to see the  Gefion Fountain,  a large fountain near the waterfront. This was constructed as a symbol of a mythical story of the creation of the Zealand island on which Copenhagen is located.

Just next to the fountain, you will find the bridge  Gefionbroen .   Stroll across the bridge and go straight for about 450m along the waterfront to reach the iconic Little Mermaid.

8. Little Mermaid

Visiting Copenhagen and not seeing its famous Little Mermaid would be incomplete. Although it is a very miniature statue, it holds a special place in the heart of the city’s people and tourists. The Little Mermaid statue was inspired by Hans Christians Andersan’s fairytale of a mermaid who waits by the sea daily, longing to see her beloved prince. I am sure everyone would have heard a similar version of the fairytale in their own language.

The little mermaid statue in Copenhagen.

However, this sculpture was commissioned after Carl Jacobsen fell in love with the ballet performance of this fairytale and had this iconic statue created. The Little Mermaid has gone through a lot since she was sculpted. Despite being vandalized many times, the Danish still restored and maintained her for the visitors to enjoy.

Depending on the time of the day, I am sure you will meet many people gathered around the little statue, so try to take a peek before continuing your walking tour.

Continue to walk in the same direction in Langelinie for about 300m until you find a staircase to your left going down to the citadel’s entrance. Climb down the stairs to reach Kastellet.

9. Kastellet

You will now be looking at the Norway Gate on the North side of the Kastellet. It is one of the most well-preserved fortresses in Northern Europe. The fortress is built in the shape of a pentagon, and the aerial view looks beautifully like a star-shaped flower surrounded by a ditch in the same shape. Explore the red-colored brick buildings and wander in the surrounding park to find the Kastelsmøllen. It is a Dutch-style windmill that replaced the original post mill in the 18th century after a storm destroyed it.

A part of the Kastellet in Copenhagen.

This windmill with popping red looks insanely picturesque, surrounded by a blanket of green grass. (Did someone say photo spot?)

Once you have reached the windmill, continue to walk further in the same direction to exit the Kastellet from the King’s gate on the southern side. You will know you have reached closer to the King’s Gate once you see St. Alban’s church at a distance.

A part of the Kastellet in Copenhagen with the Denmark flag.

Once you exit the King’s Gate, walk around 800m to reach Nyboder. Do not hesitate to take a coffee break at Original Coffee or any other Cafe on your way. I found almost every cafe really good, and I didn’t have any preference.

10. Nyboder

Nyboder is a charming row house district that formerly served as an accommodation for Danish Naval personnel and their family. The original construction started in the 17th century and was painted red and white. The current hue of yellow (it looks orange to me, though!) is almost referred to as the Nyboder yellow by the Danish.

A couple of orange colored buildings in Nyboder, Copenhagen.

It has become quite the Instagram spot, and you can easily understand why. I mean, the yellow or orange really does wonders in the background of your pictures. But they are actual residences of people, so please consider their privacy while snapping pictures.

Walk around 500m to reach the King’s garden.

11. Kongens Have

Kongens Have, which means the King’s garden is the garden right outside Rosenborg Castle, which gives it the name Rosenborg Castle Garden. This is one of the Copenhagen’s oldest gardens and was established as a pleasure garden for Christian IV in the 17th century. It was redesigned multiple times until the late 18th century when it was given the French Garden style. It is filled with various small statues all across the park.

Kiki from RooKiExplorers walking in Kongens Have, Copenhagen.

This would be a nice place to have a picnic and capture the Rosenborg Castle’s facade.

The Rosenborg Castle in Denmark.

Walk towards the Rosenborg Castle (of course, that’s the next stop).

12. Rosenborg Castle

Although you cannot visit the castle without an entry ticket or Copenhagen City Card, enjoying the beautiful facade of the 17th-century Dutch Renaissance-style castle is still worth it. It was built as a summer castle for Christian IV, along with the garden (Kongens Have).

Rosenborg Castle also holds the crown jewels, Venetian glass collection, and many portraits, which are now part of the castle museum.

Roopesh from RooKiExplorers posing in front of the Rosenborg Castle in Denmark.

Tip! If you have the time, right behind Rosenborg Castle, across the motorway, is the Botanisk Have which also has a beautiful tropical garden inside a dome-like structure called the Palm House. The park is free to enter, but entry to Palm House needs a ticket (free with the city card).

Walk around 650m to reach the next stop.

13. Torvehallerne

This is a one-stop for fresh produce, local delicacies, and much more. You will find a lot of shops, fish markets, and Danish pastries, making it a nice spot to eat your heart out before heading on to the remaining part of the walking tour. This is also a place loved by the locals, and during the good weather days, all the outdoor tables get filled up in a jiffy.

The market is quite unique with its glass enclosure which gives a unique vibe. Also, coffee lovers head straight to Coffee Collective , which boasts about their ethically sourced beans roasted in-house to make a perfect blend.

I have to be honest here. The next one will be a little further, and many more places are coming right after. It is just 1 km and still doable. But, if you are running short on time or would like to take a break from all the walking, you could ride the subway (Togbus as the Danish call it) from  Nørreport  to  Vesterport , which is just the next stop, and probably will take you a minute or two.

14. Palads Teatret (Nordisk Film Biografer Palads)

The Palads is the big pink-hued building you see when you come out of the subway in Vesterport. It is not very easy to miss because of the pink. It is a cinema with 17 auditoriums which is quite big. The building was Copenhagen’s former central railway station until early 1911. After a massive reconstruction, the former railway station took its new avatar as an entertainment center, the largest in Scandinavia at that time.

Over time it had multiple renovations to what is there at present. Now it is a functioning cinema, and it also hosts ballet and other cultural performances.

The Palads Teatret in Copenhagen during sunset.

Photo tip! The colors of the building are pretty interesting and make for a perfect photo spot.

Kiki from RooKiExplorers posing near Palads Teatret in Copenhagen.

Psst!   Do tag me in your pictures on Instagram. I will be thrilled to see them!

Walk around 400m to the city hall square. On your way, check out the circular  Wallmans Circus Building . It has quite a beautiful facade. Also, right opposite the circus, you can see the Axel Towers, an example of Danish urban architecture.

For the Walking Enthusiasts

If you are up for more walking, you could visit  GammelTorv  and  Nytorv , two other smaller squares. GammelTorv is the oldest square in Copenhagen, and it has a beautiful fountain called  Caritas fountain .   Both the GammelTorv and Nytorv are interconnected. You could also see the  Copenhagen Court House  in Nytorv. The city hall square is around 400m from Nytorv.

15. Rådhuspladsen (The City Hall Square)

I guess, by now, you know what to expect here. Yes, the city hall of Copenhagen was built by Martin Nyrop, who designed the city hall taking inspiration from the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, Italy. You could take a guided tour of the city hall and climb the tower to see the views.

The Radhuspladsen of Copenhagen at night.

Another interesting building around the City Hall Square is the Palace Hotel.

From the City Hall Square, walk around 700m to reach the BLOX. On the way, try to walk past the entrance to Tivoli Gardens. Unfortunately, access to the gardens is not free. Still, they usually have seasonal decorations around the entrance, which can be seen on your way.

The Radhuspladsen of Copenhagen.

BLOX is one of the newest additions to Copenhagen. It is also built in a modern urban style, making it a home to the Danish Architecture Center. It comprises cafes, public spaces, exhibition halls, and many more. The recent construction has transformed a rather boring open area into a waterfront meeting point. This, along with the new bike bridge, is an example of modern architecture aiming at creating a sustainable urban environment.

The BLOX building in Copenhagen.

Psst!  In 2023, Copenhagen has become the world capital of architecture, and many activities will be happening around this area this year. Keep an eye out for the announcements! You might be there to witness some lovely events.

Walk across the Bryghusbroen bridge and continue for about 350m to reach the Black Diamond.

17. Det Kgl. Bibliotek

The National Library of Denmark, also called the Royal Library, is one of the largest libraries in the world. It is also the largest in the Nordic region. The main building, completed in 1999, is called the Black Diamond and is a stunning example of modern Danish architecture. The waterfront facade of the building shines like a diamond reflecting the waters. On a nice clear sunny day, you could see the shimmers coming out so strong that you could hardly look at the building.

I was lucky enough to see it on a clear sunny day (rare in winter), and it was spectacular.

Water reflection on the national library in Copenhagen.

Walk around 600m to visit the stock exchange building of Copenhagen.

Børsen is another architectural marvel, ordered to be constructed by King Christian IV in the 1620s. It is one of the oldest stock exchange buildings in the world. It also beautifully adorns the skyline of Copenhagen with its remarkable spiral tower, which almost looks like a unicorn horn to me. The tower is called  Dragespiret , which means the Dragon’s tower.

The Børsen stock exchange building in Copenhagen.

Walk for around 300m to reach the Christiansborg Palace. I am still in awe, wondering how surprisingly close everything is to each other. I have only experienced this in smaller towns where you can explore almost everything on foot.

19. Christiansborg Palace

Christiansborg Palace is Denmark’s center of power with a rich 800-year history. It houses the seat of the Danish parliament, the Supreme court, and the Prime Minister’s office. Many parts of the palace are used by the Danish Monarch, like the Royal Reception Rooms, Palace Chapel, and the Royal Stable, which can also be visited by the public.

You must purchase a ticket to enter the palace (free with a Copenhagen City Card). However, it is also worth looking at it from the outside. Multiple parts of the palace were reconstructed quite a number of times, as some parts were destroyed during two severe fires that happened in the past. The architectural style has changed over time, and you can now see a variety of styles over the ages of the Danish era.

The Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen at night.

We have almost come down to the last few places. So don’t give up yet! I know it is a really long walk. Go on for 300m to reach the Nikolaj church.

The Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen at a distance.

20. Kunsthallen Nikolaj

The church, constructed in the 13th century, was one of the oldest churches in Copenhagen. It has a magnificent tower that can be easily spotted from the skyline of Copenhagen. The fire of 1795 gruesomely destroyed most parts of the church. Later, after it was restored, it was officially discontinued as a church. The original building was completely destroyed, including its tower. Still, the new version retained most of the original tower’s designs and was also used as a naval museum. Currently, it is being used as a Contemporary Art Centre with various exhibits.

The Kunsthallen Nikolaj church in Copenhagen.

In around 270m, you will reach Copenhagen’s main shopping area.

21. Strøget

Be prepared to be amazed by a sea of shops in one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe (some claim it to be the longest and some not, but surely it is one of the longest). It is very common in Europe to have car-free shopping streets, and  Strøget  is around 1.1 km long, and you can find a store for almost every brand, many souvenir shops, and food stalls. Being in Denmark, you should, of course, go visit the Lego store, which also has a Lego display of Nyhavn, which is quite realistic.

A Nyhavn lego set in a lego store in Stroget, Copenhagen.

If you visit in summer, you could find yourself hoarded by people as it gets very crowded on a good weather day, but it is worth taking a stroll around this area.

And you have almost made it. The next is the last stop of the walking tour. Walk for about 450m to reach the Round Tower.

22. Round Tower

Round Tower, from 1642, is one of the iconic buildings in Copenhagen. It has an observation deck at the top and, surprisingly, no stairs (Ok, Wait! There are a few at the top, but it is not much). The tower has a wide spiral path where you can reach the top by walking conveniently without losing your breath.

If you are into star gazing, you could also visit the tower on specific days when they offer star gazing nights during winter. Being the last stop and also one of the lovely places to get aerial views of Copenhagen, you could pay a visit to the observation deck for a price of 40 DKK, less than €10 . It is also free if you have a Copenhagen City Card.

Kiki posing in Round Tower, Copenhagen.

Psst!   Try to visit during the golden hour and enjoy the sunset above in the observation deck.

Oh yeah! This is the last stop, but if you did not start at Kongens Nytorv, you could walk for about 800m to reach Kongens Nytorv. Also, walk past the street of  Landemærket,  which has several colorful houses (Photo spot may be).

Kongens Nytorv Metro  is also convenient for taking public transport to anywhere in Copenhagen.

Yeah, Copenhagen offers a lot more than the Little Mermaid statue. Hope you get to visit it soon! 🙂

Happy that you liked our post! Thanks for the compliment. 🙂

love all the churches on this list- beautiful! It makes me laugh when I see the Little Mermaid statue on everything related to Copahagen… it’s a tiny statue but attracts so many tourists!

Yeah, completely agree about the Little Mermaid. It is way too popular. 😀

Copenhagen has always been high on my travel bucket list, and now reading your walking guide has inspired me so much more! I love the different colors, architecture, and exploratory ease the city has to offer. Great blog!

Thanks for the compliment! Happy that you liked our post and hope you get to tick Copenhagen off your list. 🙂

This article was very helpful and inspiring. I liked the way you organized the tour into four sections and covered the main attractions and landmarks of the city, such as the Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid, the Tivoli Gardens and the Christiansborg Palace. I appreciate the map and the directions you have provided. Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise with us!

Glad that you liked our post and all the details that we mentioned! Thanks for your kind words! 🙂

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this info. I have a little window of time on my layover in Copenhagen and I was on the fence about going out to explore. (would I get lost, would it be worth it, could I even see anything? etc) Your article has given me the confidence to go out and do it! It’s perfectly detailed and I feel equipped and ready to get my adventure on. 😀

Thank you for the compliments! We’re so glad that you liked our guide. 🙂

As for your question, it completely depends on how much time you have because Copenhagen’s airport is one of the busiest airports. It might take you a while to get through the security check. So, we would recommend having some buffer time.

However, you could still do some part of the walking route and be able to do some sightseeing. You could easily get to the center of the city by train in 15 minutes and start your walking trip right away. If you plan well and have considerable amount of time, it is very much doable. It is definitely worth it! 🙂

Hi could you tell me which spot I’d closest to Copenhot, the outdoor hot tubs? Does your plan go anywhere near them? Thanks so much. X

Hi! CopenHot is not near this walking route, but it is reachable by public transport (about 25 minutes) from Christiansborg Palace. Hope this helps!

This walking tour combines our extremely popular  Hygge & Happiness tour  with an afternoon jam-packed with Copenhagen’s most iconic sites and tastes.

Your local guide is a bona fide Copenhagener who is super excited to share their knowledge of Danish culture with you, as well as local historical secrets that you won’t find in any guidebooks! And because our tours are for small groups only, your guide has plenty of time to answer any questions you may have.

Your tour takes you through the oldest parts of the city, where you experience hidden gems in the form of cobblestone-filled streets, timber-framed houses, and green refuges of calm amongst the urban sprawl.

This Copenhagen walking tour is not just about seeing the city’s greatest hits but tasting them too! So, get ready to engage all of your senses as we sample some Danish delights, from world-renowned pastries to delicious chocolate and coffee.

We also stop to enjoy a spot of lunch from one of our favourite street food vendors before continuing our exploration of the city.

Next up, we jump on the bus, just like the locals do, which takes us to enjoy some of Copenhagen’s famous historical sites. A stunning walk on the banks of the  Game of Thrones -worthy Citadel rewards you with amazing views of the city. As we go, your guide enthralls you with tales about Copenhagen (and Denmark’s) rise and demise throughout history.

Hear secret insider stories about the Royal Guards at Amalienborg — the Royal Palace — that only those who have been in the guard know about.

There is ample time for snapping some stunning images (your guide can help with this), that are sure to make your social media followers jealous.

The historical highlights continue with the Rosenborg and Christiansborg palaces, the latter of which is better known as the Parliament building. Here, we stop to tell you about former kings with delusions of grandeur and mental insanity, as well as the inappropriate love triangles they engaged in… We also talk a little about the Danish welfare system, which provides a very high degree of trust, which in turn has helped us earn the title as some of the happiest people in the world.

And of course, no Copenhagen sightseeing tour is complete without saying hello to the Little Mermaid and finding out why everything is not as it seems with her.

So put on your best walking shoes, bring your camera, and get ready for a lot of fun, Copenhagen-style! Before you go, don’t forget to ask your guide for tips on what else to see, do, and eat in our awesome city.

Mrs. Karesha V. from The United States of America traveled on 13 May 2023:

This was a fantastic tour by Terese. She was very knowledgeable about Copenhagen history, government, culture, food, etc. I learned a great deal from her and she did a wonderful job of engaging the entire group while still allowing for folks to ask individual questions, take breaks for photos etc. I did the day long tour (~9am-~4pm) and I would highly recommend it (vs just the half day).

Ms. Gira D. from Italy traveled on 28 Apr. 2023:

I was on a short trip in Copenhagen and wanted to hit the main tourist attractions in one go. This tour was fantastic and our guide Theresa was wonderful at sharing knowledge about the history and general culture of Denmark. I definitely recommend this experience —just make sure you can handle lots of walking!

Mrs. Tiffany R. from The United States of America traveled on 17 Apr. 2023:

Had a wonderful experience on the full day tour guided by Teresa today. It was a great introduction to the city and culture of Copenhagen. Teresa shared bits of Copenhagen’s history and lifestyle + answered all our questions. She also recommended other neighborhoods and spaces to visit for the rest of the trip. Would totally recommend this!

Ms. Yoonjie from South Korea traveled on 11 Apr. 2023:

I had a great time with Christian and the rest of the group. It was a nice mixture of Danish history and fun facts about Copenhagen. Appreciated the breaks for pastries and drinks.

Mr. Michael G. from Australia traveled on 4 Apr. 2023:

Absolutely a great time. learned so much my brain was heavier by the time we got back. I would recommend to anyone trying to get an overview of the main points of the downtown area.

Mr. Richard J. from The United Kingdom traveled on 22 Mar. 2023:

Couldn’t be happier with the experience. Our amazing local guide, Theresa, was extremely knowledgeably and gregarious. Highly recommend taking advantage of the opportunity as you will gain irreplaceable insights into the city.

It was a wonderful tour around Copenhagen! I was happy that we had a lot of stops to have some food ⭐️ almost 7 hours went really fast and the whole atmosphere was super nice. Kristian was a great guide, and I will definitely recommend this tour to my friends!

Mrs. Chanelle W. from The United States of America traveled on 28 Jan. 2023:

Wonderful walking tour! Highly recommend especially for first time visitors to Copenhagen. Great storytelling, history, and culture knowledge. We had fun! In fact we booked the all day tour. Thought it might be a bit tiring but to me and my 15 year old son, it was fine. We covered lots of areas in the center of Copenhagen that we probably would have missed if we wandered solo. Our guide was super! His love and pride for the city is infectious. We love Copenhagen! Thank you. We will be back!

Ms. Melanie O. from Canada traveled on 19 Jan. 2023:

I would give 10 stars if I could. This tour started our visit on a great note, providing a welcoming introduction to the city and useful tips for the remainder of our trip. Christian was the best guide and is a really fun person to spend the day with. He is extremely knowledgeable, open, friendly, and fun. He enjoys his job and it shows. The tour is well organized, but not rigid. You will have a great time on a half-day trip, but if you’re up for it, the full-day trip is well worth it and gives you a fantastic overview of the city. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to hit the main sites of Copenhagen, learn about the culture and history, and get some awesome recommendations for your trip!

Mr. Robert J. from The United States of America traveled on 4 Jan. 2023:

One of the best city tours I’ve been on. Kristian was extremely knowledgeable about the city and candid about his experiences. He was also a lot of fun to chat with. I would highly recommend this tour to others.

Mr. Terry J. from Germany traveled on 19 Dec. 2022:

This was my first trip to Copenhagen with very little knowledge about the city. Axel was amazing, he’s a cool young guy with a lot of knowledge. Thank you for a great day exploring Copenhagen.

Mrs. Milla P. from Belgium traveled on 9 Dec. 2022:

If you’re even staying for a da in Copenhagen, and you don’t know anything about the city, I definitely recommend taking this tour! you get a general idea of the history and culture of Copenhagen and Denmark. The tour guide was also very nice and would talk about the places we visited in a storyline like way with was pleased to listen too. I would recommend getting the afternoon tour and not only the morning tour! you get a lot of history in the afternoon tour with I liked very much.

Ms. Alice S. from Canada traveled on 3 Dec. 2022:

This is a great way to see everything in one day and to get an idea for what you want to see in depth later. We really enjoyed it! We wanted to learn about the city and we did!

Mr. Anthony M. from The United States of America traveled on 28 Nov. 2022: I was in Copenhagen over the weekend and booked a full day tour with Mie and friends – very glad I did. Lots and lots of walking in the rain and wind (wear weather appropriate shoes and clothes) BUT very worth it as I learned so much about Danish history through the various kings and leaders, and also the daily life of the Danish people. Highly recommend the full day tour if you have time!

Ms. Jirka S. from The United Kingdom traveled on 15 Nov. 2022:

Very nice tour with local guide! He did a great job telling us everything we needed to know ! Would definitely recommend this tour.

Mr. Kyle M. from The United States of America traveled on 3 Nov. 2022:

Well worth our time! Amalie was personable, easy to understand, knowledgeable, and everything she had to share was fun and interesting. She gave us a great selection of tid bits on Danish history, values, lifestyles, and hawt goss. Was a long tour, but not exhausting thanks to the languid pacing with lots of breaks for free snacks and hot drinks. She had great answers to my many questions. Agreed with other posters that it felt like a stroll with friends. 🙂

Ms. Christabel G. from Mexico traveled on 25 Oct. 2022:

Joining this experience gave me insight on what I can do for the rest of my time in Copenhagen, it also helped that the group size was small. Jam was able to accommodate me even though I was the only participant due to scheduling.

Ms. Heidi H. from Germany traveled on 16 Oct. 2022:

Mie was a great guide! Felt like I was walking a friend vs a structured tour. All the snacks were awesome too! Would highly recommend this tour.

Ms. Dobrinka J. from Russia traveled on 9 Oct. 2022:

I did this tour on my first day in Copenhagen and it was a great introduction to the city and Denmark’s history. Our host was very knowledgeable and friendly, also with a nice sense of humor. My favorite part were the little hygge streets, so colorful and cozy!

Mr. Christian W. from Canada traveled on 2 Oct. 2022:

Gave us a very good cross view of the city and its culture. Was a very warm and down to earth experience even if the weather wasn’t so welcoming at times. But….real part of life here.

Mr. Andrew J. from the United Kingdom traveled on 28 Sep. 2022:

Wonderful experience! Don’t be intimidated by the “full day” option – it’s paced so very well! Our guide was warm and welcoming and really made the journey wonderful.

Ms. Devon T. from United States of America traveled on 14 Sep. 2022:

Take this tour in Copenhagen! Kristian was a wonderful host. He grew up in Denmark and is passionate about Copenhagen. The tour felt very personal and he conveyed his own experiences throughout the day. Trust me, walking around Copenhagen without a tour won’t do the trick for your first time in town. He knows the spots and you get MANY treats throughout the day.

Mr. Michael J. from Australia traveled on 5 Sep. 2022:

I intentionally went on this experience at the beginning of my trip to Copenhagen. As a result I felt like I could better navigate the city. I knew which places I would want to go to for further enjoyment. And I found out which places I would really not need to revisit. The tour was excellent for the experience itself; and, it saved me time and money throughout my time in Copenhagen. The full-day tour was well-worth it. I especially loved being sung the birthday song that ends with “With chocolate and cakes!” Thanks for the highly-personalized tour. The connection made me feel connected to Copenhagen.

Mr. Eddie R. from Canada traveled on 2 Sep. 2022:

Great tour with delicious snacks throughout. Covers a lot of Danish history and culture so a useful overview of the city for your first day in Copenhagen!

Ms. Eleanor J. from The United States of America traveled on 29 Aug. 2022:

12/10, loved it!!! Jam is so knowledgeable about pretty much everything, even off the wall questions. So sweet, interesting, informative, and Hygglie!!! And he gave the best suggestions for souvenirs, music, gifts, food, experiences, everything under the sun. I wish this was the first thing I had done in Copenhagen and based the entirety of the rest of my trip around just his recommendations. 1000% will be amazing and set you up for the rest of your trip, no matter how long you are there.

Ms. Karolyn S. from Poland traveled on 25 Aug. 2022:

This was a fantastic experience, with all due credit to our guide Jam. He is warm, witty and an authentic human being. I felt like I was visiting a friend who was taking me to all the cool local spots. His knowledge of Denmark history and take on current life in Copenhagen is captivating. You get the real feel of Copenhagan. Super fun!

Ms. Emma N. from The United Kingdom traveled on 22 Aug. 2022:

This tour was priceless. If you want to go beyond the basic touristy stuff, this is for you. The history Mie provided gave context that made visiting historical sites a lot more interesting. Mie also made great suggestions for the rest of my trip and helped us find interesting souvenirs. The bakery that you visit has amazing pastries… I’d travel back from Canada just to have another frøsnapper out of their window. Overall – wonderful, not to be missed!

Mrs. Jamie T. from Canada traveled on 20 Aug. 2022:

Had a great day with Jakob and the other guests. The snacks and treats were lovely, and each felt very connected to being in Copenhagen. Jakob shared meaningful anecdotes along the way, and was so personable that 3 people added on the afternoon section to stay with us for the full day. Similarly, Jakob shared that he was leading the drinks tour the following day, so a few of us have added that to our agenda as well!! The tour was just as described: a laid back walk through charming parts of Copenhagen while considering what both hygge and happiness really are. A great way to see the city and make a deeper connection to one’s own travel.

Mr. Joanne W. from The United States of America traveled on 17 Aug. 2022:

Jacob embodied hygge. He went into specific details whilst at the same time conveying an honesty and authentic passion for his city and country. From this experience, I felt a sense of Denmark: understated, relaxed confidence that if you take time, life will be better.

Ms. Erin T. from The United States of America traveled on 13 Aug. 2022:

This was the perfect way to spend my first day in Copenhagen. Jacob showed us some amazing sights, but the best part was hearing anecdotes about life in Denmark, tasting delicious local food and experiencing some genuine hygge! As a solo traveler, I walked away with a great sense of the city and the culture that I could never have gotten on my own.

Mr. Andrew P. from The United States of America traveled on 28 Jul. 2022:

A brilliant way to experience Copenhagen through the eyes of a Copenhagen native . Our guide Jens was fantastic! Relaxed and very funny yet incredibly knowledgeable about all things Copenhagen. He gave us a great insight into what makes Copenhagen such a wonderful place to live. He also spiced our tour up with tasty local treats and informative and amusing stories. The day flew by and by day’s end we had covered a lot of ground. The pace is relaxed so it’s not taxing for those who don’t walk much. 10 out of 10 from us!

Ms. Shiela G. from United Arab Emirates traveled on 19 Jul. 2022:

This was an awesome tour! I learned a lot about the hygge culture, heard some funny stories about the Danish past monarchies, and gained a sense of appreciation for all the sights that we visited. Our guide, Jens, was super knowledgeable and friendly. I definitely recommend this experience 🙂

Mr. Paolo A. from Mexico traveled on 9 Jul. 2022:

It was a very enjoyable experience, not only a “tour”, one feels like a part of the city and sees it no from the point of view of tourist. It really is Hyggelig and I left with the desire to walk through these streets for weeks.

Mr. Jeff K. from United States of America traveled on 4 Jul. 2022:

Great introduction to the city. Would highly recommend doing this on the first day or two of your trip if you have never been to be Copenhagen!

Mrs. Marianna N. from United States of America traveled on 28 Jun. 2022:

This is a whole day of experience to capture the city’s atmosphere. We really enjoyed it having been taken to places we wouldn’t have necessarily gone on our own. Sandra was really nice, had deep knowledge of the place and culture. We really felt we started to understand local people’s everyday life and their thinking way on happiness in the present moment.

Mrs. Monica H. from the United Kingdom traveled on 21 Jun. 2022:

This was WONDERFUL for people looking for a basic foundation of Copenhagen. I’ve been before but wanted my family to learn more and I ended up learning so many new things. He gave amazing food recs and the treats provided on the tour were INSANE. I’d bring any first timer on this tour in a heartbeat.

Ms. Angel T. from Hong Kong traveled on 14 Jun. 2022:

Great walking tour to get to know the city! Jeppe was great at helping us to understand the Danish style of life, of hygge, and happiness. A lot of the stopping points on the tour are pretty typical tourist spots, but going around with a local brings different perspectives. Highly recommend!

Mrs. Alicia K. from United States of America traveled on 6 Jun. 2022:

Great tour! Lots of walking, tasty snacks, super kind guide (Jamshed)! Had every opportunity to ask questions and any and all questions were answered. Great recommendations for places to go afterwards! Def recommend!

Ms. Somsom from Ukraine traveled on 27 May. 2022:

It was the best memory in Denmark for me. I had no idea about Denmark and Copenhagen but the host explained all the interesting history and the treats of sweets were awesome!! It took 6 and half hour walk but I didn’t even feel tired because everything was worth to visit and especially the last spot Nyhavn was the most beautiful place ever.

Mrs. Miriam G. from United States of America traveled on 15 May. 2022:

Had an amazing time with the group. The tour gave me a good understanding about Hygge and Denmark culture in general. Jeppe was always up to answer hour questions and gave great tips about the city. Take this tour im the beginning of your trip so you can use all recommendations they have. Wish everywhere had an experience like this.

Ms. Victoria C. from Australia traveled on 29 Apr. 2022:

It was a chill day which fits the vibe of the city. The tour was amazing and I had so much fun. We checked off the main sightseeing spot and also explored some hidden gems around the city. Do this tour! You won’t regret it!

Mr. Matt J. from Canada traveled on 19 Apr. 2022:

This was a day well spent. Pauline was a wonderful tour guide. She was knowledgeable and personable and it felt like a friend was showing us around the city. We did this tour at the beginning of our 2-week trip and we went back to several of the sites and businesses Pauline introduced us to during our stay in Copenhagen. We fell in love with Copenhagen in large part due to the wonderful orientation and introduction that Pauline provided.

Ms. Stacy J. from United States of America traveled on 12 Apr. 2022:

This was a wonderful way to see the city, learn about the culture and lifestyle, have fun and some tasty treats! Jam was fantastic! Lots of information and great stories. I am a solo traveler and met three other Americans on this trip. It was fun getting to share the experience together. Definitely worth doing this trip.

Mr. Kim S. from Singapore traveled on 3 Apr. 2022:

Fantastic way to see Copenhagen for the first time or the fifth time. Our guide Jam provided deep insights into and fun experiences of life in Copenhagen. I booked for the chocolate tasting (which was fabulous!), but got so much more. Highly recommend.

Mr. Andrew K. from United States of America traveled on 22 Mar. 2022:

This was my first trip to Copenhagen. We took the full day tour so we saw all the major sites in Central Copenhagen and got lots of good stories along the way. The guide was great and really friendly. I felt that by the time we are done I had a good sense of the layout of this city and a list of places to visit and restaurants to eat at. Walking tours are so much more intimate that the hop on/hop off experience and I highly recommend this one!

Mrs. Kelsey L. from United States of America traveled on 8 Mar. 2022:

Jacob was amazing! So knowledgeable, but it didn’t feel like a school field trip. It was fun, exciting, and engaging. 10/10 would recommend.

Mr. Amir K from Dubai traveled on 28 Feb. 2022:

Fantastic tour. If you are in for a day or if you are just starting your trip to Copenhagen, I recommend this highly. Jamshed was very knowledgeable and it’s nice to hear the perspectives of a local dane. I will definitely recommend this to all my friends that visit this fantastic city.

Ms. Maureen C. from Australia traveled on 18 Feb. 2022:

I truly recommend this activity. Jacob was our guide and he’s simply lovely… knowledgeable about Copenhagen and very good company. He makes what is really sightseeing as though it’s a real conversation. Excellent!

Mr. Hajar. from England traveled on 2 Feb. 2022:

Fantastic tour! It was excellent to hear about the city from a local and getting to taste Danish pastries, chocolates and street food! Comfortable walking pace and we saw so much! Definitely a hyggely experience!

Ms. Carissa O. from Australia traveled on 14 Jan. 2022:

I had a truly amazing day. Mie had wonderful stories to share. Nothing beats seeing Copenhagen through the eyes of a local. I would definitely do the tour again if I can.

Mrs. Bonnie N. from United States of America traveled on 22 Dec. 2021:

This was the perfect way to spend our 14 hour layover in Copenhagen. Although it was quite chilly outside, the tour was broken up into breaks with stops along the way. Overall the tour was well thought out and organized. Jeppe was an excellent tour guide! He was knowledgeable about landmarks and the history of the city and also, as an authentic local, he was able to answer any question thrown his way.

Mr. Rodney T. from England traveled on 17 Nov. 2021:

Our guide, Jamshed, was very friendly and knowledgeable and we had a full day walking and chatting about many different aspects of Copenhagen, including of course the famous “Hygge”. We visited several places off the usual tourist trail and enjoyed tasting some typical Danish food and drink. A day well spent and we would thoroughly recommend this tour to anyone looking to learn about the city, its culture and traditions.

Mr. Michael C. from England traveled on 29 Oct. 2021:

Great full day out with a small group on this tour. Our guide Jacob was so good – friendly and informative – and the day was fun, interesting and a great way to see Copenhagen’s main and hidden sights. Our group felt like old friends by the end. Highly recommended !

Mr. Ray P. from USA traveled on 26 Oct 2021:

We were recently in Copenhagen for the first time with friends and colleagues, and we had a fantastic time on this tour. Mie met us at the hotel, led us on the Metro and Bus to our starting point, and then began regaling us with the tales of this gorgeous little city. Her English skills were fantastic, her storytelling was compelling, and she brought us to some great sights and locations. She had a near-perfect mix of history, and first-person experiences to share with us. She even tried to help us pronounce Danish words, but we failed miserably 😉 I heartily recommend this tour, and this company. And, if you’re lucky enough to have Mie as your guide, you’ll have an excellent time.

Mr. Decker M. from USA traveled on 13 Oct 2021:

A group of 13 colleagues go away once a year for a weekend to bond. Historically we try and spend the Saturday getting to know the location we’re in, then the Sunday is free for whatever. There were obviously a number of tours to choose from but Copenhagen Urban Adventures sounded the best fit for our disparate group. Our initial correspondence was encouraging, queries were dealt with quickly and in a friendly manner. We felt as though we could trust the company we were dealing with. Our requirements were a little bit fluid – final numbers weren’t known and several of out members have “out there” dietary requirements and as the tour included several “food stops” these had to be accommodated. Our requirements were taken on board and subsequently accommodated (as far as they could reasonably be). Initial impressions of Mie were that she was outgoing and personable with a command of English that could put some native speakers to shame. She arranged to meet us in our hotel so that we didn’t have the extra stress of navigating the Metro solo into town (we were staying at Bella Sky on the outskirts). Using a variety of public transport we navigated to the start of our tour – some historic military buildings on the outskirt of the city. This was where Mie’s fun-filled personality was first given free-range as she explained what she wouldn’t take questions on – for perfectly sane reasons – even if some of the points were tongue-in-cheek. Much fun was had by our attempting to mangle Danish street sign names and the beginning of a series of running jokes which we all got to participate in was commenced. There isn’t much point in talking about the geographical and urban spaces we explored. Suffice to say that we took in most of the obvious tourist attractions (along with speculation about the top three most disappointing tourist attractions in the world, at least one of which is in Copenhagen). Along the way we got to taste some awesome chocolate (several of our number were delighted to find the same store in the airport so they could stock up before their flight home), to drink coffee in a café just oozing hygge, to eat well from a great street food stand and to enjoy Royal Snacks. We learnt to drink modestly at a brown bar observing the Law of Jante and we learnt an amusing fact about Ikea toilet accessories, that even though it doesn’t stand up to close scrutiny (lakes Mie, lakes!) still had me laughing like a drain all afternoon. We all thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with Mie and even though your guide can’t be guaranteed a reading of the reviews on this page show that a specific guide isn’t needed for a fun and enjoyable touring experience. In fact the experience was so enjoyable that several of us are talking about doing Urban Adventure tours in our own home towns!

Ms. Rachel C. from Australia traveled on 26 Aug 2021:

This tour is great if you have limited time in Copenhagen like we did. We only really had one day and wanted to see as much as we could and Jacob facilitated that so well! Learning about Hygge was interesting and seeing the main sights while also getting off the beaten track was great fun. We had enough time so Jacob actually took us to one of his favourite places as well. I wouldn’t have experienced that otherwise. Thanks for a great day Jacob!

What other guests say about our tours and locals

Cool Copenhagen

"We booked our tour with Jeff - a genuine local who has lived in Copenhagen all his life. We wandered through the streets on a rainy day and our 3 hour tour provided a wonderful overview of this cool city. Jeff brought the sites to life and was able to relate everything to living in Copenhagen over the years. His knowledge was first class and he made sure that he left us with some great walking and restaurant recommendations for the remainder of our weekend. Thank you Jeff!"

local Jeff

Great time, great food.

"We loved the tour with Claudio! Not only was he very knowledgeable and gave a bunch of great information about Danish history and culture, the food stops were also very well planned so that we did not get too full too quickly and got to appreciate all the various foods that we tried."

Fabulous Food Tour!

"If you enjoy exploring a new city with a local, look no further. Grazi went out of her way to make sure we got to experience the best that Copenhagen had to offer, and personalized the tour based on what we had already done, as we had been in the city for a few days. She also had loads of interesting facts about the history, and made use of the rainy weather (less people!) by taking us to places that were swamped on a sunnier day. She was a pleasure to spend the day with, and we loved every minute! The food was spectacular, ALL of it! Come hungry! We are thrilled we got to know Grazi. "

Delicious Copenhagen

"Just returned from a wonderful food tour of Copenhagen with Claudio. He was an excellent host and a friendly knowledgeable guide, introducing us to many eating and drinking opportunities that we would have otherwise walked right by. His selection was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed every stop - the roast pork smorrebrod was my personal highlight. Highly recommended."

a lot of time in the bus versus time to sight-see, but that's the choice of the tour and cities visited in a short time. Tour guide was a nice person but honestly didn't seem to enjoy her job. Didn't like that we were surprised with a joined tour in Spanish, which detracted from the English tour, since our guide was Spanish and it became very Spanish-focused. Bi-lingual tourists noted that the Spanish group was getting a lot more history and stories

Nikolai was FANTASTIC!!!! He was a great tour leader. The tour took us to many places and he educated us well. However, just a few negative comments. The hotels were not satisfactory ....I am used to better hotels when I travel. Carrying my luggage throughout the tour was very burdensome. I am an older person, and although I am in great shape, I did not want to be responsible for carrying my luggage everywhere. There was an 89 year old man on our trip. He had a real hard time catching up. I usually go on escorted tours where my luggage, and everything else, is handled by the guides, not by me. I loved the places that wer went to and overall I would suggest people take Tourradar and Intrepid if they don't mind doing some of the labor involved.

Tour was enjoyable. Major major let-down in failure of arrival pickup within contracted time of 90min after aircraft arrival. Told to wait when contacted before asked to pay and make my own way to hotel. Not the faults of the guides who were excellent.

What people love about copenhagen tours.

Great journey ! Long days of travel but each day was worth it!

My whistle-stop tour of Copenhagen reaffirmed these 5 Danish design lessons in cool and cozy design

This is how I'm warming up and re-energize my space

Danish design lessons

1. Lighting must be layered, and iconic

2. even small pops of color can set the tone, 3. chairs provide an opportunity to make a design statement, 4. true craftsmanship adds instant timeless appeal, 5. just a touch of nature will lift every space.

Camille Dubuis-Welch

A whistle-stop tour of the Danish capital, unsurprisingly, left me completely inspired to enhance every corner of my home, especially in winter when all you want and need is more color, light, and beautiful decor in your life.

I went to Copenhagen for an architecture tour, and to dive into Danish design. I had been dreaming of seeing the incredible facade of The Black Diamond Library for quite some time, and as I am a sucker for anything that has been crafted, and that tells a beautiful design story, I simply felt like it was somewhere I had to visit immediately.

Danish design at its core is functional, stylish, and unfussy – it is everything I love (on paper), but in practice achieving the Scandi living room or bedroom space of dreams, without it feeling a little cold, is not the easiest to accomplish. So who better way to hone my own cool yet cozy design skills than by exploring every stylish corner of this very cool city, with coffee and Danish pastry in hand?

Stepping into cute restaurants, and stores, and meandering into some of the best-designed hotels where just the lobby will blow you away, not to mention the rooms, essentially was a masterclass in effortlessly cool, yet cozy design. Here are five design lessons I have taught myself.

A medieval chandelier in front of a square mirror in a white living room

In a country that has particularly limited daylight hours in the winter months, it is no surprise that the Danes do lighting well. Globe low-hanging lighting pendants adorned many a cozy coffee table, sputnik chandeliers defined spaces, and there was a real sense of architectural detail in every design.

Alongside capturing some of the most incredible lighting silhouettes, I am sure I will have encountered more subtle lighting tricks for daylight savings too. Ambient, task and feature lighting was all layered strategically, adding pure ambiance and heightening the function of every space.

'We love cozy lightning that gives an intimate atmosphere,' says Gitte Beha Smed, head of corporate communications at the beautiful Hotel Alexandra in Copenhagen shared with me. 'You can hang the lights low and place them in small groups.'

Designs were juxtaposed, and even the type of lighting varied between soft warm light and brighter white light. 'Candles are important at lounge tables and on the window sill,' adds Smed. Admittedly, a beautifully scented candle would sit perfectly in an entryway or bathroom space, but even a simple tapered candle worked wonders to elevate my coffee table photos whilst I was away. 'In Copenhagen, and Denmark generally, the natural light is bright and blue.'

For a lounge or bedroom space, I liked these Night Owl lamps from Fritz Hansen in particular, and I spotted many marbled glass mushroom lamps in an array of color variations too; I am sure these would add playfulness to both traditional and modern decor themes alike. I also came across this dimmable Sputnik Chandelier from Wayfair which is quite cool and sculpted.

Gitte Beha Smed

Gitte Beha Smed holds an MA in Art History. She is the head of design at Hotel Alexandra, a boutique hotel in Copenhagen that specializes in design and the world known Danish architects from the mid-20th century. After 15 years working with national art and culture funds at the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces, Gitte joined the industry in 2022. She is now an independent art consultant and runs two design hotels in Copenhagen with her husband.

A living room with blue walls, a matching desk, armchair and bookshelf

There is no denying that color shapes a space. It sets the tone and can influence mood. Though neutral color schemes are quite typical in a Scandi living room, my Copenhagen color story truly started when I visited the Hotel Alexandra. In the store at the side of the lobby, you are greeted by a beautifully-styled bookshelf adorned with a flurry of colorful bookends, and surrounding colorful accent chairs. Having come in from the cold, these energizing colors lifted my spirits.

As someone who often writes about color and who encourages experimentation in home decor, it is a little hard to admit that I am a little color-shy and find it easy to fall into a rut when it comes to my own space. For a while, I stubbornly kept using bright bedsheets over more calming bedroom colors . One very simple swap made an incredible difference to my entire room, the power of color is not to be ignored.

Smed advised me on how to bring a little of Copenhagen's essence home through color choice: 'Blue color with a neutral grayish hue or a grayish warmer stone color is often a good choice. To target the Scandi-style you can combine with more chromatic colors like green or vermillion red.'

Teamed with marvelously designed surrounding furniture and chairs, color use even in small doses can be pivotal in lifting the mood of a space. 'Color is a cherished theme at Mazo, woven into our love for vibrant expressions,' says Magnus Sangild, Head of Design and Partner at Mazo , a Danish design company with Nordic and Japanese influences. 'This affection extends not only to the captivating interplay of hues on our furniture but also to the broader environment.'

Sangild notes how colors take center stage in the newly opened Showroom in Copenhagen, giving the space a modern and lively ambiance. 'Moreover, the walls themselves are adorned with a subtle color tone of pastels, adding another layer to the visual symphony.

'In Mazo, we believe that color is not just a choice but a  narrative, and our showroom in Copenhagen is a testament to the artful fusion of diverse hues, materials,  and textures. Experience the vibrancy that color brings to life in every corner, creating a space that is both modern and inviting. '

Magnus Sangild

Magnus Sangild, born in Aarhus, Denmark in 1982, began his design journey at 16 as a cabinetmaker, collaborating with emerging Danish furniture designers. After refining prototypes and contributing to creative concepts, he earned the title of craftsman. Sangild then pursued formal education at the Royal Danish Academy of Design, specializing in furniture and spatial design, graduating in 2009.

In 2014, Sangild became Head of Design at the renowned Danish brand by Lassen, preserving classical designs. After five years, he co-founded Mazo in 2019 with business partner Magnus Stephensen. Their venture is fueled by a shared passion for crafting beautifully designed products, marking a new chapter in Danish design history.

Library with blue bookcases in Victorian living room

Copenhagen is renowned for its furniture design, and chairs are especially iconic.

'To infuse your space with a touch of Copenhagen or a distinctly Danish essence, consider opting for a timeless chair designed to withstand the test of time,' Sangild shares. 'Take, for instance, our ARCH Lounge Chair , crafted by the renowned Danish architect Magnus Læssøe Stephensen back in 1932. Constructed from steam-bent solid oak adorned with paper cord, this chair not only makes a bold statement but also encapsulates the quintessential Danish aesthetic through its use of natural materials. It's more than just a piece of furniture; it's a Danish vibe encapsulated in a chair, destined to endure for generations.'

Not only have these remarkable designs shaped the furniture industry, but they have allowed us to bring timeless function and effortless style into our homes. 'In our philosophy, a chair should, above all, prioritize comfort and functionality.' Hotel Alexandra's lobby celebrated classic Hans J. Wegner designs, while I spotted Arne Jacobsen 's iconic Egg™ chair and Poul Kjærholm ' s PK22™ design in a store named Fritz Hansen ; no home should be without one that nods to heritage and craftsmanship, combined with modern-age functionality – it is a really good look. Content director Lucy Searle gives us a few key pointers in buying designer furniture the right way, for longevity.

Wall decor ideas with houseplant on the wall

To create a home that never dates, craftsmanship will be present throughout. Fine design is an art, and there is a clear distinction between a piece of furniture that has been carefully designed on every level and one that simply has not.

Sanglid continues, 'We approach the selection of materials and the pursuit of quality with utmost seriousness. Our commitment extends to the responsibility of creating furniture that withstands the test of time, ensuring a lasting impact on both comfort and the environment.'

Taking the chair as an example, there is much more to this dining, living room, and even bedroom essential. We often take it for granted.

'A well-crafted chair embodies more than just durability and quality; it becomes a statement piece that enhances and elevates any room. Our focus on enduring designs is exemplified by creations like the TMBO Lounge Chair from 1935, which remains relevant today and is poised to endure for the next 50 years. This dedication to timeless design reflects our commitment to sustainability and longevity in furniture production.'

Relishing the soft curves of a design, the buttery finish of fine leather, the fuzzy texture of a beautifully upholstered piece, or even a light grain of wood on a rectilinear plane – there is much to be enjoyed when we prioritize bringing craftsmanship into our homes. Especially if it can complement the natural architecture of your home, your space will be enhanced like never before.

Bookcase styling with colorful books and plants

From an Art Deco design carved into dining room chairs to a dried flower bouquet as part of a simple tablescape scheme , a touch of nature always has a place and purpose inside. I spotted house plants in lonely corners, natural and raw materials were present everywhere, as were interesting forms that simply made you feel more connected with the outside. Even when the weather feels less than cozy, a little greenery will warm a space up and bring design essence to a home in every season.

If you want to give your home a mini Copenhagen-style makeover , I would consider the following, many of which are similar to designs that caught my eye out there:

1000 Chairs. Revised and updated edition Hardcover

'Bringing a little bit of Copenhagen into your home is all about balance between light and furniture,' shares Smed. 'Low curved lounge furniture in wood and natural or low chromatic upholstery is trending, combined with colorful accessories and deco.' I felt this very much in every space I saw and I am excited to approach my space with a more discerning, Danish-inspired, design eye.

Copenhagen food

Renowned for its commitment to sustainability and emphasis on local produce, Copenhagen’s food scene has earned global acclaim. From the bustling food markets like Torvehallerne, showcasing an array of fresh, seasonal ingredients, to the innovative kitchens of Michelin-starred restaurants, the city boasts a culinary tapestry as diverse as its neighborhoods.

You can explore the roots of Danish gastronomy through traditional delights such as smørrebrød, an open-faced sandwiches adorned with flavorful toppings. Witness the culinary evolution with the emergence of New Nordic cuisine, where chefs skillfully marry traditional techniques with avant-garde approaches, resulting in dishes that are both visually stunning and gastronomically satisfying.

Smørrebrød, a Danish culinary delight

Smørrebrød, a quintessential Danish culinary delight, is more than just an open-faced sandwich, it’s a cultural institution on a plate. Translated simply as “buttered bread,” smørrebrød is a culinary tradition that has been an integral part of Danish dining for centuries.

At its core, smørrebrød consists of a foundation of dense, dark rye bread generously slathered with creamy butter. What elevates this seemingly humble dish to a culinary art form is the symphony of carefully arranged toppings that adorn its surface. From delicate layers of thinly sliced cold cuts, herring, or smoked fish to vibrant spreads of pickled vegetables, fresh herbs, and tangy sauces, each smørrebrød creation is a masterpiece of flavor, texture, and visual appeal.

Culinary history of Copenhagen

Copenhagen’s culinary scene is a melting pot of flavors, influenced by a rich and varied history. From the traditional Nordic cuisine of the Vikings to the modern food culture of today, the city’s food scene has evolved into a world-renowned destination for foodies.

The culinary history of Copenhagen is a fascinating story that spans centuries. The city’s location on the coast of Denmark made it an important center for trade and commerce, with a vibrant fishing industry that brought in a diverse range of seafood. This led to the creation of classic dishes like fishcakes, smoked herring, and pickled herring, which remain popular to this day.

The city’s culinary history was also influenced by the Danish royal family, who established a number of grand banquets and feasts throughout history. These events introduced many new ingredients and dishes to the city, including roast pork with red cabbage and caramelized potatoes, which is now a beloved Danish staple.

In the 20th century, Copenhagen’s food culture saw a resurgence with the New Nordic Cuisine movement. This movement was led by innovative chefs who sought to showcase the region’s natural ingredients and traditional cooking techniques, creating a new wave of cuisine that quickly gained international acclaim.

If you are interested in exploring the rich culinary history of Copenhagen, we invite you to join one of the best food tours in Copenhagen. Our knowledgeable guides will take you on a journey through the city’s neighborhoods, introducing you to the traditional and modern flavors of Copenhagen’s dynamic food scene.

A Total Trip: What I spent on an expensive weekend in Copenhagen

Chamidae Ford

copenhagen home tour

Copenhagen is an expensive city to visit © Daniel Rasmussen

In our A Total Trip series, writers document what they spent on a recent getaway. In this edition, Chamidae Ford shows us how far her money went on a long weekend in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I recently spent a sunny weekend in  Copenhagen – a city known for its stunning architecture, signature design and burgeoning food scene – with my friend and coworker Ann Douglas . When planning this trip, I knew I’d only be there for a few days, and I also knew I wanted to taste delicious food and shop for a few souvenirs (or more than a few).

As someone who lives in New York , I must acknowledge that my sense of what is deemed overpriced and what is "normal" is a bit skewed. Still, I will bare my spending soul if only to offer a grasp on what a weekend in this city may cost if you enjoy yourself rather than convert prices on a currency app.

A receipt with Chamidae's pre-trip spending figure

Pre-trip spending

A goal for me was to do as little pre-trip spending as possible. Since I was already in Dublin for work, I took a short flight costing 679kr to Copenhagen.

For the hotel, I wanted a place that felt young and prioritized design, so it truly felt like we were in Copenhagen. I also looked for something central to avoid long commute times when visiting the main sites. We stayed at 25 Hours Hotel in Indre By , a pricier option but in a great location, and we split the cost of the room. For three nights, our stay was 5408kr, which means my portion was 2704kr, which I paid for with credit card points I had been saving.

Pre-trip spending: 697kr

On-the-ground spending

Airport transfer: We landed in Copenhagen around 4:30pm, and we discovered that one of Copenhagen's finest perks is how straightforward it is to get from the airport to the city! Doing the same in London, Paris, or New York is a pricey, timely and exhausting feat; this was cheap (30kr) and fast. I got from the airport to my hotel in roughly 20 minutes.

Activities: With a dinner reservation for 8pm (you must make dinner reservations in advance; Copenhagen is not the place for walk-ins), we spent a few hours taking in the early evening, the winding streets, and noting places we would like to visit the next day.

Apertivo: We stopped at Little Green Door , a cocktail bar along the canal, for a pre-dinner drink. We each enjoyed a single shot, gin and tonic for a whopping 131kr (262kr for both). After swiping my card, this was the moment I knew my weekend was going to be more expensive than I had anticipated.

Dinner: In the evening, we dined at the intimate yet bustling  Lilo Vinoria , a chic wine bar with Italian-inspired food and an extensive drink menu. I am unsure if it was because I had only consumed a single croissant that day due to travel or because I was coming off a week of pub food in Dublin, but this meal felt like everything I had ever needed.

We split the burrata featuring a yuzu marinade, walnuts and jalapeños and shared the pork and veal rosemary polpettes. Ann Douglas and I each enjoyed a plate of the freshest, brightest, most rejuvenating pea and asparagus risotto. Throughout the meal, I nursed a very dry martini, which was fine but made me long for the Dirty Martini at Long Island Bar in Brooklyn.  My share of the cost for that meal was 471.85kr .

Total: 632.85kr

L-R: Avocado, bacon and toast; up-close shot of a hotdog; a collection of colorful glassware; a boat tour of Copenhagen

Breakfast: On this beautiful Saturday, the sun was shining, and we were on the hunt for a full breakfast – I needed more than a croissant to sustain me today. We stumbled across Coffee Room , where I had a scrambled eggs with chives, crispy bacon, toast, avocado, freshly squeezed orange juice and an Americano (237kr) .

Activities: First and foremost, I wanted to shop. I had heard about the city's vintage stores and seen the incredibly stylish locals, and I knew I needed to come home with a few pieces from my travels.

We went to Mads Nørgaard , a Copenhagen brand that makes iconic striped shirts that are so comfy. I bought the pink-on-pink, striped long-sleeve, which I would end up wearing the very next day (299kr) . From there, we browsed a few vintage shops, but the real winner was O-S-V Second Hand , where I got a very chic, brown boatneck top sprinkled with polka dots and a white midi length skirt ( 599kr for both).

We stopped by a stunning glass shop called Studio Arhoj , a suggestion courtesy of Lonely Planet writer Verona Farrell in her story, Copenhagen in 5 Shops . I walked away with a handful of gifts for friends and a piece for myself (599kr) .

Having sufficiently spent a lot of my money, we decided to start sightseeing. We chose to purchase the Copenhagen Card  (CPH Card), which includes all public transit and entrance to most of the city’s main sites. We strategically bought it in the afternoon of day two to maximize its use. For 48 hours, the card costs €100 (746kr) . Included in the card was a boat tour through the canals. We cruised through the city, learning some of its history while enjoying the sunny day. The hour-long tour even gave us a glimpse of the famous Little Mermaid statue .

Lunch: For lunch, we visited a hot dog stand, where I got a spicy dog covered in onions, relish, ketchup, mustard and a herby aioli. Delish! (45kr) .

Activities: After our quick bite, we headed to the Copenhagen Design Museum (included in the CPH Card), featuring an exhibit on local supermarket chain  Irma . It delved into the brand's design evolution, showcasing how it had changed since its inception in 1886. I decided to skip the gift shop. My credit card was still tired from the morning.

Dinner: That evening, we took the bus (CPH Card) to dinner, where we enjoyed a tasting menu at Mirabelle Spisería , a moody Italian restaurant in inner Nørrebro. The food was delicious but not necessarily mind-blowing. We split a crispy arancini, flatbread doused in olive oil and mozzarella, burrata with pistachios and capers. We also enjoyed a salad of cod and citrus, which I loved, plus cacio e pepe  (cheese and pepper pasta) and brown butter sage ravioli. I particularly enjoyed the delicious glasses of Nero wine.

My share of the dinner bill came to 536kr .

Total: 3061kr (oof!)

L-R: Chamidae poses in Louisianna; up-close shot of cheeseburger; seafood dinner; Chamidae poses in her new top

Breakfast: We stopped by Lagkagehuse , where I had a kanelsnegl  (cinnamon roll) and an Americano (90kr) .

Activities: Today we were leaving the city behind to visit the  Lousiana Museum of Modern Art (CPH Card) – this was the activity everyone had recommended, and I must admit they were right. It's an hour-long train ride outside the city, which is a gentle way to ease into the day and a great opportunity to see a bit of Danish countryside. We followed signs from the station that led us on the 10-minute walk to the museum, and arrived at opening time of 11am.

We spent two hours exploring the museum, which included a wide range of exhibits, from Dominican-American artist Firelei Báez and her captivating multimedia pieces that explore the black diaspora and folk tales to the French artist, Chaïm Soutine's expressionist pieces that span his lifetime. The museum itself is stunning, with glass walls and a sculpture park in the center. Perched on a hill overlooking the water, it is a captivating location that remains the highlight of my trip. I purchased a Báez print to take home with me (350kr) .

Lunch: Back in the city, we immediately went looking for a Gasoline Grill for lunch. Famous for its excellent burgers (and long lines), we decided to stick it out as everyone said it is the best.

The classic cheeseburger (100kr) was truly unforgettable. The bun is toasted to perfection, so each bite has a crunch; the meat, which is never frozen, is seasoned throughout the process. Ann Douglas and I ate, standing against a brick fence in silence, completely focused on the experience. For the quality, it felt like a steal (NYC loves to charge $28 for a burger) and totally worth the wait.

Activities: After lunch, we explored the Rosenborg Castle (CPH Card), catching a glimpse of the crown jewels, grand halls and many stylish rooms. It is no Versailles , but it is an interesting historic space in the city's center. The park grounds surrounding the castle are stunning, and catching the tulips in bloom was exciting.

Dinner: For our final evening, we opted for Mediterranean food and ventured over to Vesterbro for a meal at Delphine . It was a bit of an Instagrammy spot, but the food was great, and the atmosphere was fun.

The tzatziki and flatbread, to start, was refreshing and light. The lamb was juicy and delicious, the prawns a bit small but well seasoned, the french fries crispy, which I prefer, but the star to me was a watermelon feta salad, which had mint, perfectly firm chunks of green tomato, onion, olives and a dash of vinegar. Truly perfect.

For my share of the meal, I spent 490kr .

Total: 1030kr

L-R: Broches from Rosenborg Castle, a flower market and Chamidae posing for a photo in the park

Breakfast: For our final morning, we stopped by Holms Bager (63kr) for coffee and a pastry before returning to a couple of shops where we wanted to grab some items we had been thinking about (334kr), another one of those Mads shirts and more items from the Studio Arhoj  glass shop. Mostly, we savored our final hours and enjoyed the early morning quietness of the city.

Airport transport: We hopped on the train back to the airport and our CPH card, in its final hours, still covered our fare.

Lunch: In the airport before the 8.5-hour flight, I stopped by Joe & the Juice for an underwhelming sandwich (85kr) , but it is airport food; what more can you expect?

Total: 482kr

Final tally receipt

The final tally: 5902.85kr

Overall, it was an expensive weekend, but more due to my own desire to shop and indulge in lavish dinners. Only having alcohol with dinner ended up saving me a lot of money in the long run, as most days, I only had one drink.

The Copenhagen Card is a hack when you are visiting places nonstop, but I don't think we fully maximized its bang for its buck due to doing more wandering and shopping than overall sightseeing.
