Recent tour reviews

Courtney Barnett is amazeballs! Not only is she an amazing lyricist, but she is a great guitar player. She had no back up musicians or drum machine--just her guitar. The concert venue was very intimate in Jackson, Wy. Courtney talked to us and took questions.

Unfortunately, she likely missed her next concert due to snow in the Jackson Hole area.

It's the second time my daughter, son and I have seen her in concert this year. We'll go to her concert anytime she's near

First of all, at 63, I thought I was going to be the oldest, whitest guy there, but I was very happy to discover that I wasn't. Such is the unifying force of music, especially the great music that Courtney Barnett creates.

This was my first show at Anthem and I was very impressed by the venue. Lots of bars, lots of choices for food and drink. Seemed like plenty of restrooms too.

Now, to the music itself. This is the first time I have seen Courtney Barnett live (not even on videos) and she is almost a different persona. On stage, her alt-rock power pop music becomes almost metal, with booming guitars and a strutting Courtney clearly enjoying being on stage and playing her music. I really enjoyed it even if it was very different from what I was expecting. The playlist seemed pretty balanced with tracks from all of her releases. I didn't time it, but I would guess her part of the show was about 90 minutes.

One thing I didn't like was the lighting. During one song, the entire band was lit from behind by a horizontally arrayed row of bright red lights. Makes it very difficult to make people out. If I were to score it, I would give the music a 8/10 and the lighting a 5/10.

Third time I've seen Courtney and it keeps getting better. Saw her three weeks before in Williamsburg which so far exceeded my expectations that I thought MassMoca would be anti-climatic. I was so very wrong. The Williamsburg show was one of the top 10 shows I have seen, and the MassMoca show was just as good. What is a constant is that her voice is something I want to hear always, but its the guitar playing that mesmerizes me. And she seems to have fully embraced being a guitar god - and we should be happy she has. This show was simply what Rock n' Roll is, should be , and still can be. I write this before seeing her again in Louisville. So very excited.

Courtney Barnett Announces New Album and Upcoming Tour

by Jon Mendelsohn July 11, 2023, 3:47 pm

Australian musician Courtney Barnett has revealed that she will be releasing an instrumental album titled End of the Day (Music From the Film Anonymous Club)  on September 8. The album will consist of tracks the “Avant Gardener” wrote for the 2021 documentary film, Anonymous Club .

Videos by American Songwriter

End of the Day (Music From the Film Anonymous Club)  will feature 17 tracks including “Start Somewhere,” “Life Balance,” and “First Slow,” which are all featured in a video Barnett just released on YouTube. The video initially depicts a static shot of some gorgeous greenery before Barnett appears in a blue raincoat and wanders around the landscape. The tracks are atmospheric and calming.

In addition to the announcement of the upcoming album, Barnett has revealed that she will be embarking on a tour that starts in North America and moves to the UK next year. The tour will begin on October 11 with a show at Stone Church in Brattleboro, Vermont. It will then travel to New York City, Washington, D.C., Glasgow, and London. The Tour will conclude on June 27 with a concert at Villa Park in Birmingham, England. Foo Fighters will accompany Barnett during her UK shows.

End of the Day (Music From the Film Anonymous Club) will be the final record that Barnett releases through Milk! Records. Barnett and Jen Cloher founded the record company in 2012. It has been one of the great honours of my life to be a part of this incredible community and to work alongside so many amazing artists. Thank you to every single person involved XO.”

Barnett recently discussed the creation of Milk! Records with Guardian , saying,  “Somebody referred to me as creative director and Jen as label manager. It was so DIY … We were just trying to get things done. And making it up as we went.”

Barnett further opened up to the outlet regarding the end of Milk! Records, adding, “A year ago or maybe even six months ago, thinking about [closing it] would’ve been so impossible and so difficult and I would’ve resisted. One day I literally just woke up and my mind had changed.”

Courtney Barnett Announces Here and There Festival Tour

Courtney Barnett Announces Here and There Festival Tour

Courtney Barnett has announced her first-ever Here and There touring festival, featuring a unique lineup of rotating musicians who will join the Australian rocker on the road this summer.

The tour begins on August 8 at Arvest Bank Theatre at The Midland in Kansas City, Mo., followed by a stop on August 9 in St. Louis and a gig in Cleveland on August 10. The first three stops will feature guests Lucy Dacus and Quinn Christopherson.

Dacus will stick around for the next set of shows and be joined by Faye Webster and Caroline Rose, who will unite with Barnett in Harrisburg, Pa., on August 12. In North Adams, Mass. the latter will be joined by tour newcomers Men I Trust, The Beths, Bartees Strange and Hana Vu.

Additional guests joining Barnett at select stops include Snail Mail, Alvvays, Sleater-Kinney, Waxahatchee, Leith Ross, Lido Primienta, Japanese Breakfast, Julia Jacklin, Chicano Batman, Indigo De Souza, Wet Leg, Ethel Chain, and comedian Fred Armisen.

Barnett shared, “When I was a kid I would make mix-tapes and dream up my own festivals, I’d even design the t-shirts and pair up musicians for iconic collaborations. I’d listen to the mix-tape and pretend it was the live recording of the concert, all my favorite artists on one stage together. 10 years ago I wrote this lyric: ‘I got lost somewhere between here and there, I’m not sure what the was called.’ Whether that was meant to be interpreted as a geographical, emotional or philosophical journey, I thought it was the perfect title for me roaming festival.”

The ticket presale begins on Tuesday, March 29, at 10 a.m. local time. General public on-sale starts April 1 at 10 a.m. local time.

Courtney Barnett Announces New Album End of the Day, Tour Dates

Listen to the project's first three songs below

Courtney Barnett Announces New Album End of the Day, Tour Dates

Courtney Barnett has big plans for the rest of 2023. The Australia singer-songwriter has crafted a new instrumental album called End of the Day,  out September 8th, as well as a brief North American tour in which she’ll perform one set of the new songs and one set of tracks from her back catalog.

The music in End of the Day  began as a group of compositions Barnett wrote with her longtime collaborator, Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, for the score to Danny Cohen’s 2021 Barnett documentary  Anonymous Club.  A year later, however, the artist found herself coming back to the brief improvisations, and decided to turn them into something more cohesive. The resulting album comprises 17 tracks Barnett tweaked and re-recorded into one seamless work.

An instrumental album already offers a change in artistry for Barnett, who became a critical darling in the 2010s for her brand of lyrical, almost spoken-word indie rock. Perhaps more importantly, however, is that End of the Day  will be the last release on Milk! Records, the label the artist founded in 2012. Barnett went deep on her decision to shut down the label in a new interview with The Guardian ,  chalking it up to the understandable difficulties of running a small business.

“I’m still coming to terms with the end of it,” Barnett said. “But I’m letting go of that [guilt] feeling. It’s like that idea of looking after yourself so you can look after someone else. That reverse selfishness — you can’t love someone ‘til you love yourself — that kind of idea.”

Below, you can stream “Start Somewhere,” “Life Balance,” and “First Slow,” the first three tracks from End of the Day . Pre-orders for the project are ongoing.

Barnett and Mozgawa will take the new album on the road with a brief run of shows this fall. The tour includes stops in Brattleboro, Vermont, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, as well as two nights in New York City and Los Angeles. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster , or find deals over at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed via StubHub’s FanProtect Program.

Barnett’s last album was 2021’s  These Things Take Time, Take Time ,  while last year she organized the compilation album  Here and There ,  which benefitted reproductive rights organizations.

Courtney Barnett Announces New Album End of the Day, Tour Dates

The post Courtney Barnett Announces New Album End of the Day, Tour Dates appeared first on Consequence .

Courtney Barnett Announces 2024 National Tour

By Jules LeFevre

Courtney Barnett has announced a full Australian tour for early 2024. The Melbourne singer-songwriter will play across the country throughout January and February, starting on Saturday, 20th January at the City Recital Hall in Sydney.

This will be followed by Melbourne, Perth, and finally Hobart (the date and venue have yet to be confirmed). The tour has been earmarked as the ‘End Of The Day’ tour, which will see Barnett playing two sets: the first being entirely instrumental, made up of tracks from the score of the documentary Anonymous Club , and the second being favourites from her back catalogue.

Courtney Barnett: ‘Start Somewhere’, ‘Life Balance’, ‘First Slow’

The tour announcement comes after Barnett was revealed on the lineups for the Sydney Festival and Perth Festival , and was also locked into the Melbourne Recital Hall’s 2024 contemporary program .

The end of 2023 will also bring up a bittersweet milestone for Barnett: the closure of her longtime record label Milk! Records . The news was announced in July this year, with Barnett telling Double J that she didn’t really know why she was shuttering the label – just that she knew it was time.

“I don’t completely know the answer to that question yet,” she told the station. “The why, the how, or any of those things. But I just know now just seemed like it was the right time.”

Milk! Records was launched by Barnett in 2012 as a way to release her first EP,  I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris . The label went on to release music from Liz Stringer ,  Jen Cloher ,  Jade Imagine ,  Tiny Ruins ,  Loose Tooth ,  Hachiku ,  Evelyn Ida Morris , and many more.

More Courtney Barnett

Courtney Barnett has announced a string of Australian tour dates in celebration of her latest album, the instrumental End Of The Day , for January and February 2024.

Starting the run on Saturday, 20 January, Barnett will perform at the City Recital Hall as part of next year’s Sydney Festival , followed by a show at Melbourne’s Recital Centre on Friday, 2 February, The Rechabite as part of Perth Festival on Saturday, 10 February and Sunday, 11 February, and will soon announce a date in Hobart.

For her upcoming tour, Barnett will perform two sets per show – one bunch of instrumental songs from End Of The Day , followed by a second set of solo numbers from the remainder of Barnett’s rich catalogue.

Tickets to her appearances at Sydney and Perth festivals are on sale now via their respective websites , with the Melbourne date on sale on Monday, 30 October, at 11 am AEDT via the Melbourne Recital Centre website .

End Of The Day was released on Friday, 8 September, and features 17 tracks written to score the documentary  Anonymous Club.

However you parse its title,  End Of The Day  is an undoubtedly significant release for Barnett, ticking off some key items on her artistic bucket list and bridging the gap between  Things Take Time, Take Time  and her impending fourth studio album.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

The concept for  End Of The Day  came about nearly two years after the documentary about Barnett,  Anonymous Club,  premiered at the 2021 Melbourne International Film Festival. “I didn’t really intend to make it an album,” Barnett told The Music in a recent interview . “We just thought, ‘Let’s make this the best music we can for this specific project.’ But I kind of like the journey it took, you know?”

Barnett described the album’s creation as “a really slow process”, during which she spent weeks poring over its ambient ebbs and flows. “I found myself listening to the tracks for hours on end,” she says, “and I wasn't sure if I wanted to add new instrumentation or how much I wanted to change.

“It was a bit like a puzzle, I think, putting it all together in the end – just finding those transitions and figuring out how to make it all flow very naturally. I wanted all the songs to bleed into each other and not have a sense of pause or distraction in between them.”
