They arrived promptly and there was a driver and a tour guide with very good English which isn’t all that common in Thailand. We were told we were the only ones on the tour so we had the whole air con van to ourselves. Made for a comfy ride. We first visited the railway market, had time for photos and to see some stalls. We tried some local food at the market, saw the train amble past and then headed to the floating market. At the floating market we shopped around, got on a boat and had a 45 minute tour of the canals. Finally off to the stunning and huge stupa which we walked round. Throughout we were provided very informative explanations of everything we saw and about Thailand and Bangkok more generally. We had some lunch in a very local like food market restaurant and the price was very low but the quality of food was delicious. Because the tour was so personal, we devoured so much information from a great personal tour guide. We got back to the hotel around 3pm so we had time to enjoy sunset and the evening without feeling rushed. It was a great day out, we learned so much and we found our tour guide to be perfect. The Best Dinner Cruises on the Chao Phraya River in Thailand

cruise on the chao phraya river

The River of Kings has long been one of the most important, if not the most important, waterway in the Land of Smiles. It acts as both transportation and a source of livelihood for many locals. Now, visitors to the Kingdom can experience the Chao Phraya River like never before: aboard a luxurious dinner cruise. Here are our favorites on the Chao Phraya River in Thailand.

1. supanniga dinner cruise.

2. Chao Phraya Princess

The Chao Phraya Princess Cruise is managed by the Tristar Floating Company. They have been operating since 1990 and run a total of five different cruise experiences. Visitors are sure to have an incredible experience regardless of the one they choose. As diners pass well-known landmarks in the capital, including Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, they will be serenaded by the singers and a saxophonist on board. The two-hour dinner is served buffet style, with international and Thai cuisine to choose from. Diners can choose to enjoy their dinner inside where it is cooler or opt for better views and sit on the outdoor deck on the Chao Phraya Princess. Cruises start at 7 pm. Private charters are also available.

Apsara Cruise

The Banyan Tree Bangkok is home to some of the best dining options in the capital. From Vertigo and Moon Bar to an all-day international restaurant, there is an eatery for everyone. There is even one that floats down the mighty Chao Phraya River. No detail is overlooked on the Apsara Cruise . From the attentive staff to the authentic, Thai cuisine, cruises don’t get much better than this. The boat is a vintage rice barge, with intimate seating to provide guests with the most romantic of dining experiences. Be sure to dress to impress, as flip flops and casual wear are not permitted on this luxurious cruise. The cruise starts at 8 pm and ends at 10 pm.

3. Arena River Cruise

The Chao Phraya River seemingly becomes one with the Ganges River for guests on board the Arena River Cruise. Most of the cruises in Bangkok set sail with only traditional Thai cuisine on deck. This is not the case aboard the Arena River Cruise , equipped with delicious Thai and Indian cuisine, served buffet-style. Some of the delicious Indian menu options guests can expect to chow down on include dal makhani, shahi paneer, and chicken malai tikka, as well as some Thai favorites like the well-known stir-fried chicken with basil. This 2.5-hour long cruise is accompanied by a talented singer, providing entertainment for diners as they voyage down the river. Both dinner cruises and private charters (up to 50 people) are available. Dinner cruises are from 8-10:30 pm. Price per person is ฿1,400, and this includes the Indian buffet, 2.5 hours of cruising along the river, live singing, water, and Indian masala tea.

4. Grand Pearl Dinner Cruise

Those looking to cruise down the river on a boat nothing short of luxurious, should dine on the Grand Pearl . This massive ship has three floors, and is even equipped with escalators. Established in 1990, this dining experience has been perfecting both its stunning decor and delicious Thai and western cuisine since. There are a number of unique dining and cruise options to choose from. Those wanting a romantic, candle-lit dinner should check out their Grand Pearl Amazing Dinner Cruise. Those who prefer to spend the entire day exploring via the water may instead opt for the Ayutthaya full-day tour, which allows visitors to see wonderful historic landmarks, including Wat Mahatad.

Bigger is not always better. While many of cruises boast of huge boats, those hoping for a truly intimate dining experience should explore the river on the Manohra Cruises . This boat is mostly made up of wooden decor, with only one deck for passengers. Some of the signature dishes on the menu include massaman kai baan (massaman chicken curry), choo chee pla (fish in red curry), and tom kha kai (Thai coconut soup). These dishes are made to be shared family-style, which is the most popular way to dine in Thailand . The two-hour long cruise commences at 7:30 pm, and it is ฿2,300 for adults and ฿1,400 for children.

Chao Phraya Sunset Cruise – Fun Things to do in Bangkok

Bangkok skyline skyscrapers viewed from the Chao Phraya rive

Add a Chao Phraya River Cruise Dinner to your Bangkok itinerary. It’s a fun way to end the day and one of the best things to do in Bangkok.

While living in Bangkok, we’ve done a few Chao Phraya river cruises. From Chao Phraya Sunset cruises to dinner cruises offering fine dining cuisine.

But one of the most entertaining and affordable river cruises that is more casual and also quite fun, is the sunset cruise. This cruise includes a buffet dinner and free-flowing beer.

Got some spare time in Bangkok?

Escape the bustling streets of Bangkok for 1 day. There’s a list of amazing day trips just outside the city!!

CHECK OUT THIS LIST OF DAY TRIPS FROM BANGKOK

Chao Phraya Sunset Cruise

There are a few Chao Phraya sunset cruises that depart either from Icon Siam or from Asiatique the Riverfront. We chose the Chao Phraya Princess sunset cruise – one of the most famous Chao Phraya river cruises.

Not only did we experience some stunning views but also this Chao Phraya cruise has a buffet dinner. And it’s quite affordable too.

Chao Phraya river sunset cruise. A wooden boat sailing through a river with a backdrop of highrise building

Honestly, before we had done any of these → cruises in Bangkok along the Chao Phraya River we had a few doubts about what to expect.

Firstly, we found quite a few reviews claiming they’re not worth the money and are just a tourist trap. While other reviews said the food and overall experience was really bad.

While certain reviews do have a point, the cruise we did only cost $21. And all in all our honest opinion is that it was well worth the price.

About the Chao Phraya Princess Cruise

The Chao Phraya Princess cruise offers 2 options: a sunset cruise and a dinner cruise. We booked the sunset cruise with free flowing beer (which is more a lot of ice topped with beer which is ok and now we even prefer to drink beer with ice while before it was unthinkable).

A longtail boat floating in a river as the sun is setting.

It’s a 90-minute cruise along the Chao Phraya River and departing from Asiatique the riverfront which includes food, drinks, live entertainment and amazing views of Bangkok city skyline and also a few famous temples.

Buying Tickets

Buying tickets can be done in person from the Chao Phraya Princess Cruise booth. The booth (actually just a table setup) is located inside Asiatique the riverfront, halfway through the main entrance.

However, we decided to buy our tickets online because we didn’t want to have to deal with any last-minute ‘fully booked” surprises. Remember, this is a very popular river cruise with both foreigners and even locals.

Booking online: if you bought your tickets online you need to register at the ticket booth inside Asiatique about 30 minutes before departure.

Once registration is done you’ll be given a seat number and a sticker to indicate your section: either upper or lower deck.

What To Expect on this Chao Phraya Sunset Cruise

The Chao Phraya Sunset Cruise departs at 5:00 pm from Pier 1 in Asiatique. The boarding process raised a few red flags about what we were getting into because getting onboard the boat was a bit of a mess.

Chao Phraya river sunset cruise. A woman holding a sign for tourists to follow

We were all placed in line and divided into lower-section and upper-section guests. And it seems that guests are divided by nationality. Locals (Thais) are in the upper section and foreigners are in the lower section.

Then everyone got photographed (you’ll have the option to buy the printed photo later on) and finally after at least about 15 minutes of standing in the sun (there is no shelter from the sun here) we were boarding the boat.

As the boat is departing, there is a short safety briefing and next the buffet and drinks are announced.

There’s a large buffet section in the middle with various food options. From fish to chicken, pasta and rice and salads and soups. But the majority of food is Asian, or at least Asian fusion.

Is The Food Good?

In all honestly, considering the cruise costs about $20, and includes free beer, we weren’t that concerned about the food.

While the food wasn’t anything special, we didn’t complain, and quite enjoyed it.

A buffet table with various food

After gulping down about 4 glasses of beer diluted with an unreasonable amount of ice, I went for a round of food. Some noodles, some fish, some fried things, something else (some sort of minced meat salad – Asian I guess). Oh yeah, there’s also a bar serving king prawns which I wasn’t expecting. I had 3 prawns, 2 were kinda good, 1 was….meh!

There’s also a desert section including tropical fruits, cakes and coffee.

Entertainment

Onboard entertainment is a singer on both the lower and upper sections. We Westerners sort of hold back from enjoying ourselves. But that’s not the case for Asians and Thais!!

While everyone was quiet in the lower section, upstairs there was a sort of party going on. The live singer was surrounded by old ladies, teens, kids, and men, everyone was just enjoying themselves and dancing and waving and obviously loads of videos and photos.

Jacqueline enjoying a cocktail drink

It didn’t take long for Jacqueline to join in the fun too.

If you do this tour and are assigned the lower level, have a drink, and grab a bite but then head upstairs.

Conclusion – The Big Question Gets Answered

So is a Chao Phraya Sunset Cruise worth it?

Yes, definitely. If you’re in Bangkok a Chao Phraya river cruise is worth it for sure.

It’s a great experience and you’ll also have fun – we did and so will you.

Off Topic – But Since You’re in Bangkok…

Bangkok midnight food tour by tuk tuk.

An asian cook sauteeing food with big flames

⭐️ RATING : 5 out of 5 Stars | ⏳ DURATION: 4 Hours | ↳ BOOK NOW

Slightly off topic because it has nothing to do with this Chao Phraya sunset river cruise. But since you’re in Bangkok (the capital of amazing food) this unique culinary experience just seems fitting for one of your other nights in Bangkok.

Note: this tour starts at 7:00 pm , not midnight.

This evening tour throws you straight into Bangkok’s legendary street food scene as you ride the colorful city’s backstreets and hidden spots. And what better way than to do this on a fun Tuk-Tuk?

“Gimao was an amazing tour guide; funny, informative, and patient! The tuk-tuk experience at night was so cool. And the food was fantastic, especially the rice noodle dish at Ann Guay Tiew Kua Gai. I highly recommend you book this tour for a fun night out in Bangkok!”

Leah (Read more reviews)

Your Tuk-Tuk driver whizzes through the traffic and stops you at some incredible local restaurants to sample some of the best Thai cuisine. This tour is a complete package including all food and Tuk-Tuk transport. And the evening ends at a secret rooftop bar.

Note: You’ll get a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hour(s) before the activity starts .

CHAO PHRAYA RIVER CRUISE

In Bangkok there are many different dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya River. What they all have in common is the amazing view. This is because in the evening the buildings and temples along the Chao Phraya River are fabulously illuminated. Most cruises sail the same route, so as far as the view is concerned, it doesn’t matter which one you choose. You’re going to see the Grand Palace , Wat Arun and the imposing Rama VIII bridge anyway.

We have gained quite some cruise experience in Bangkok and have discovered that it is important to decide for yourself what you are looking for in a cruise. Would you like to dine authentic with a touch of romance, hip with tasty cocktails or are you more of a party that ends with a polonaise?

Illuminated temple Wat Arun on the Chao Phraya River

All hands on deck!

Do you belong to the last group? Then the Chao Phraya River Cruise might be a good choice for you! Because on this cruise they know how to build a party. The atmosphere on board is nice and relaxed, so this cruise can also be fun for families with young children.

The Chao Phraya River Cruise moors while people wait

Warm welcome

When you are waiting before boarding you will be welcomed by the employees of the boat with a traditional dance and music, a nice welcome! The Chao Phraya River Cruise boat is a large boat of almost 45 meters long and can accommodate almost 300 people.

Nicely set table overlooking the river

On entering the cruise we were brought to our beautifully set table. We had indicated that we would like to sit on the upper deck and had a nice spot on the railing. This gave us a beautiful view of the river.

Are you curious what function those sparkling special buildings along the river have? Take a look at our article about the surroundings of the Chao Phraya River .

It’s possible to eat below deck if you prefer air conditioning. On deck the wind provided enough cooling but you have a roof over your head in case it rains. Upper deck is the most fun for us, you see more of the beautiful view.

Upon arrival everyone got a (free) welcome drink to start the evening with. Once we left the buffet was opened. The buffet consisted of western and Asian dishes. There was also a selection of fruit, pastries and ice cream.

The Chao Phraya cruise is one of the cheapest cruises on the river in Bangkok and in our opinion this is mainly reflected in the quality of the food. On the Chao Phraya Cruise they compensate this to a large extent with the festive atmosphere and the extremely friendly and always smiling staff on the boat.

Traditional Thai dancer in costume

Price for the dinner cruise

For an adult you pay 950 baht and for children 750 baht. The cruise on the river takes 2 hours and coffee and tea are free. Other drinks are not included. You can order wine / champagne by the glass or by the bottle.

Traditional dance and polonaise

During our cruise a beautiful traditional dance in traditional costume was performed. The whole evening there was also a good live band that played and sang all kinds of famous hits. As the evening progressed, the music became more and more exuberant and the staff invited the guests for a dance. This even ended in a festive polonaise in which a large part of the guests participated. The floor literally shook!

Polonaise with exuberant music during the cruise

Before we knew it, the two hours had already passed and we were moored at River City, the place where we had also boarded. Time had flown by. We have great appreciation for the staff on the boat, the drive to give everyone a nice evening is clearly visible and not without result!

Sleeping along the Chao Phraya River

Along the river are beautiful large luxury hotel chains to find, often you look from your hotel room or pool on the river. The luxury hotels almost all have a free boat service to and from the hotel. Some famous top hotels along the Chao Phraya River are the Mandarin Oriental Hotel , Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Hotel , Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok and the Millennium Hilton Bangkok . But sleeping by the river doesn’t have to cost a fortune, less known but more affordable options include V Varee Bangkok and the River View Guest House .

In the InfoBox at the bottom of this page you can find more accommodations near the river.

Goig out around the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok

Going out near the Chao Phraya River is mainly enjoying good drinks and long dinners with good company and great views! The Flow restaurant of the Millennium Hilton Bangkok has a beautiful terrace on the river and excellent service. Perfect if you want to celebrate something! While you’re there, don’t forget to visit the ThreeSixty Rooftop Bar and ThreeSixty Jazz Lounge on the 31st floor. From there you have a magnificent view on the river of Bangkok. At least as good is the view from SEEN further on. This rooftop bar is located on the roof of the beautiful Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Hotel . Here you can also enjoy amazing food and great cocktails!

Could it be a little more exuberant? Not far from the river are the lively streets Khao San Road and Rambuttri Road , here you can go out until late at night.

The boarding point for the cruise boats is at the River City shopping mall . In the small luxury mall there are a number of clothing shops and souvenir shops. There are a number of restaurants overlooking the river.

You probably have to pick up your ticket at a ticket shop, where you will get a sticker. It can be a bit hectic on the pier because there are several boats leaving. The sticker makes sure you don’t get on the wrong boat.

The River City Pier can be reached by using the Chao Phraya Expres Boat, the use of these boats is cheap, fun and easy to organize yourself. The only disadvantage is that these boats only sail until 20:00. For the way back you can’t use them and you have to use a tuk tuk or taxi. They are already waiting at the exit of the mall, because they know what time the cruise boats come back.

For more information about using the Chao Phraya Expres Boat, tuk tuk, taxi and sky train read our article about transportation in Bangkok .

We put a lot of time, money and passion in this website, we would love it if you would support us! You can do this by booking hotels and domestic trips through our links. It will cost you nothing extra but we get a small percentage of our partners like Booking.com ,  Agoda and 12GoAsia . Thank you in advance!

Chao Phraya River Dinner in Thailand (Experience the best)

 alt=

The Chao Phraya River and its tributaries, which run through the heart of Thailand, have long been regarded as the lifeline of Thai culture. For many residents, it serves both as a transportation means and also in terms of revenue generation. A dinner cruise on the river allows you to see the grandeur that lies on both sides of the river.

While there are many cruise options, they all include delectable cocktails and a lavish buffet meal that includes both traditional Thai and international dishes. There is something for everyone’s taste buds, starting from seafood to the tastiest sweets, salads, and fruits. While savouring your drink and munching your dinner, take in the vistas along the river, which include the Grand Palace, the Temple of Dawn, and the Emerald Buddha Temple, among many other ancient structures and gorgeous bridges.

While passing by the attractions and temples on the right and left banks of the river Chao Phraya, listen to the live music presented by bands playing and musicians or Thai dance acts. These cruises are the ideal way to cap off a fantastic day in Bangkok.

Chao Phraya River Dinner in Thailand

After a long day of activity, it’s time to unwind, savour the delectable cuisine on board, immerse yourself in Thai culture, and make new adventures with your friends or family.

Below are some of the top Chao Phraya river dinner cruises .

Chao Phraya Princess

Spend the evening on the magnificent Chao Phraya Princess Cruise on the Chao Phraya River to unwind and refresh. You can feast in a romantic ambiance while listening to easy-listening jazz performed by a skilled live band on the cruise ship. The Thai and international buffet on board the Chao Phraya Princess Cruise is delectable.

There is also a unique cruise for Indian tourists that includes an Indian buffet. This 2.5-hour journey is very much about spending the evening floating on one of the beautiful ships, complete with Thai cuisine, live band acts, and set-ups for an intimate date with your spouse. The sailboat has both indoor and out seating, so go inside to stay cool or relax on the deck for excellent views. Overall, a meal here will provide a wonderful evening with your loved ones.

Arena River Cruise

The thing which makes the Arena River trip distinctive is its traditional Indian cuisine which is served. Paneer Tikka Masala and Grilled Chicken are two wonderful and delectable dishes to try out.

Each guest receives a special complimentary welcome drink, but a variety of Indian Masala chai can be ordered at any time throughout the night. A live musician, Bollywood DJ, and contemporary Indian music will keep you delighted during the 2.5-hour trip. There’s even room for those who wish to dance. It can hold up to 50 people and is suitable for both youngsters and adults. All in all, it’s a great cruise to spend quality time with your near and dear ones.

Supanniga Dinner Cruise

Supanniga Eating Room, one of the most eateries in the capital, attracts ardent foodies from all over the world. Now you may savour the same delicacy while cruising the seas. This two-and-a-half-hour cruise takes you through some of Bangkok’s most prominent attractions, including the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and other temples and shrines. You’ll be welcomed with a glass of Taittinger champagne after you’ve boarded.

Your six-course meal will begin shortly after, with each course telling its own story and featuring the complexities of Thai cuisine. Choose from a variety of specialty cocktails to complement your meal, or ask the chef for his recommendation. This ship also features a trendy theme of orange, yellow, and azure colours, as well as comfortable seats, making it an ideal area to have beverages while watching the sunset. Apsara Cruise

With its rich curries, excellent soups, and delectable desserts, the Apsara dinner cruise serves the best of Thai food and is one of Bangkok’s finest evening cruises. The Royal Grand Palace, Temple of Dawn, Royal Barges National Museum, Phra Sumen Fort, and Iconsiam can all be seen from the Apsara Dinner Cruise as it cruises down the powerful Chao Phraya River. It has cozy tables, dark wood decor, and orange artwork that accommodates up to 64 people.

The comfort and calm of the Chao Phraya at night creates a romantic tone, despite the interior’s simplicity. Enjoying a four-course supper in a romantic environment will undoubtedly be an amazing experience. Lastly, the ship has a well-stocked bar with a variety of cocktails to accompany your meal. Dress to impress because casual attire and flip-flops are not acceptable on this opulent cruise.

Grand Pearl Dinner Cruise

Bangkok will be seen and explored in a whole new light. Sailing amid the historic architecture of temples, skyscrapers, markets, and a royal castle, go on board this beautiful cruise. This boat has a sophisticated atmosphere and serves Thai and Japanese cuisine. You can watch a live, traditional Thai play while eating delicious food and taking in the sights of Bangkok’s iconic attractions.

Manohra Cruises

The Anantara hotel’s Manohra River Cruise is one of Bangkok’s most opulent river cruises. The watercraft, which is based on a historic rice barge, is decorated in a traditional Thai style. Because the boat is smaller than the other barges we’ve covered, the dining space is private. The 2-hour cruise begins at 19:30 a.m., and travellers may see sights like the Taksin bridge, Rama VIII bridge, and others along the way. There is only one deck for guests, and the interior is largely made out of rattan chairs and wooden furnishings. In addition, as you cruise along, knowledgeable local hosts provide insight on each place, giving you a better understanding of its history.

Loy Nava Dinner Cruises

Throughout a two-hour dinner cruise, cruise through the city on a renovated rice barge. While admiring iconic landmarks like Wat Arun and The Grand Palace, listen to traditional music and sample the best of Thailand’s local food. The Loy Nava cruise, like others, is based on a rice barge that has been converted. The dining room isn’t too crowded, and every table offers a view of the river.

Customers can enjoy the view of Bangkok’s skyline while enjoying soothing Thai music as the boat travels throughout its route. With all of this in consideration, this trip is ideal for individuals who wish to immerse themselves in Thai cuisine. This cruise also arranges a hotel pick-up and drop-off for your comfort and security.

Royal Princess Cruise: The Most Affordable Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise in Bangkok, Thailand

A dinner cruise on Chao Phraya seems to be one of the most popular things to do in Bangkok . Although it was my third time visiting the city, I never got a chance to take a dinner cruise in Bangkok until I traveled with my boyfriend recently.

After taking the Death Railway route and learning more about World War II history in Kanchanaburi , as well as bungee jumping in Chiang Mai , there were at least two romantic activities that we did in Thailand: strolling around the beach in Hua Hin and finally joining the Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok .

We decided to join the dinner cruise as it was our last day in Bangkok before flying out to Indonesia the next day. To be fair, we were quite lucky that we made it to join this cruise, given the idea our first class train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok had a technical problem that we arrived WAY later than scheduled.

In this post, I'm going to share my firsthand experience of the Chao Phraya dinner cruise with Royal Princess in Bangkok . Is it really the most affordable option for a dinner cruise in Bangkok? How was the experience? How was the food? Is it really worth the hype? Here's the complete review of the Royal Princess dinner cruise in Bangkok!

Not to mistake it with the Royal Princess Cruise that is operated by  Princess Cruise Ltd  in Bermuda, the Royal Princess Cruise in Bangkok is a lot smaller and it seems like it only caters as a buffet restaurant on the Chao Phraya River rather than all-package services like all those fancy cruises.

Essentially, the Royal Princess Cruise in Bangkok sails twice every day as guests can book two different time slots for the buffet restaurant on the ship: the sunset cruise that typically starts boarding at 5 PM local time, and the dinner cruise, which starts at 7 PM.

The Royal Princess Cruise is a 3-story cruise ship with a capacity of around 500 pax, and they offer a wide range of food and beverage in their buffet services. They offer anything from Thai food to Western and even Japanese, as you can expect a sushi section in their buffet on the ship.

Asiatique the Riverfront is the embarkation point for the cruise with Royal Princess, and it can be a great option especially if you plan to do some other activities before or after the cruise at this.

Situated on the eastern bank of Chao Phraya River, Asiatique the Riverfront is famous for shopping. On top of that, it's also the venue for the Calypso Ladyboy cabaret show in case you want to include it in your Bangkok itinerary after the cruise.

In fact, you can also book a dinner cruise and ladyboy show bundle package for a better deal. However, for this bundle package, it seems like White Orchid Cruise is the only operator that offers this deal so you still have to book both the dinner cruise and the Calypso ladyboy show separately if you want to join the Royal Princess dinner cruise like we did earlier this year.

Why Book a Dinner Cruise in Bangkok with Royal Princess

Royal Princess Cruise in Bangkok isn't the only operator that provides dinner cruise experience to enjoy the meals and immerse in the city light in the capital city of Thailand. Actually, not all dinner cruises in Bangkok sail from Asiatique the Riverfront pier as the starting point.

For instance, you can also book a dinner cruise with Saffron from ICONSIAM or Pearl Cruise from River City pier on the other side of the city. We booked the Royal Princess dinner cruise because we thought we wanted to get on the Ferris wheel when we had time. We didn't do that, but we definitely shopped for some souvenirs to bring home with us later after the cruise.

How Much is the Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok?

Another reason why we ended up booking the Royal Princess dinner cruise is also because when we searched through Klook , when planning our trip to Bangkok, it just happened to be the cheapest dinner cruise in Bangkok available on the platform.

Plus, when we checked the details of the Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok , we saw that one of the things that is included in the package was a free birthday cake on the birthday month. Well, we went there in February, which was my birthday month so I figured that maybe we could also celebrate it on the cruise ship with a real birthday cake, although technically I had my birthday (and cakes!) when we were in Chiang Rai .

Long story short, we ended up booking a dinner cruise with Royal Princess in Bangkok through Klook and we paid IDR 757,442 (around $50 USD) in total, including the no-show refund insurance. It's really affordable, considering we barely spent $25 USD per person for this dinner cruise.

Royal Princess boarding gate in Bangkok, Thailand.

We had to upgrade with the no-show refund insurance on Klook for a few reasons. First, our itinerary that day was pretty hectic since we were scheduled to arrive in Bangkok in the morning and maybe have a proper rest before leaving for the dinner cruise. We travel slow, so we figure if we don't feel like going, we can just cancel and we don't have to worry about losing money for nothing.

Another reason is also because I booked our first Chiang Mai bungee jumping voucher on the wrong date. It was supposed to be in February, and I just happened to book it in January that the driver started calling me when I was still home in Bandung . Long story short, we wasted money for nothing because of my stupid mistake.

Thankfully, my boyfriend was really understanding that he said it was fine as long as I'd pay for the second voucher. So I ended up paying extra because of my own stupidity. But then I got quite traumatized that I didn't want to risk it all over, and that's why I told my boyfriend that this time we upgraded the voucher with the no-show refund just in case the stupid thing happened again. LOL.

Review: My Royal Princess Dinner Cruise Experience in Bangkok, Thailand

In this section, I'm going to share my full review based on my firsthand experience of joining the Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok. Unfortunately, since I've never had any other Chao Phraya dinner cruise, I'm not sure if there's any other dinner cruise package that offers a better experience or even more affordable deal compared to Royal Princess.

Without further ado, here's my take on the dinner cruise on Chao Phraya river with Royal Princess Cruise in Bangkok!

My boyfriend and me before leaving to Asiatique for our dinner cruise.

What to Wear for Dinner Cruise in Bangkok

Since I've never gone on a dinner cruise before, I wasn't sure what to wear for the cruise, especially since in my head I always thought that dinner cruise would be full of posh people that maybe I had to make an extra effort for this. So I made one mistake for this: I wore a pair of high heels for the cruise!

My boyfriend was pretty laidback, so he just grabbed his polo shirt for the cruise, and I think most people weren't that dressed up either. So if you think that just because it's a cruise and it's time to dress up, maybe think again. Trust me, you'll thank me later!

Although to be fair, since it was supposed to be our so-called romantic date and it's not every day my boyfriend sees me in high heels, I thought it was worth the pain I had after.

But if you just go for the cruise just to get an experience for Chao Phraya dinner cruise in Bangkok, I would definitely recommend wearing comfortable clothes and footwear for your convenience. Remember, the dinner cruise is a buffet service, and people who join it are most likely hungry so you want to have a high mobility selecting all the food options. LOL.

What You Need to Know About Dinner Cruise in Bangkok

Since the Royal Princess Cruise's departure is from Asiatique the Riverfront, we took a Grab car from our apartment to Asiatique. Our Klook voucher already stated the details that we need to go to warehouse #7 to proceed with our dinner cruise in Bangkok. Although we arrived way early, we made sure that we knew where to go before taking a stroll around Asiatique.

It was pretty easy to recognize where we should go for the dinner cruise since this aisle seems to be dedicated as check-in spots for ALL dinner cruise operators in Bangkok. Since we got there early, we only found a few empty tables there, but when we asked to make sure it was the right place to check in, they said that the check-in time for the dinner cruise would start at 5.30 PM.

Check-In for Dinner Cruise in Bangkok

Although the check-in counter usually opens at 5.30 PM for the Chao Phraya dinner cruise that departs at 7.30 PM, the queue will start around an hour before for a few good reasons.

First, the cruise capacity could be up to 500 pax per trip, so imagine that many people will check in with you before the ship sails for dinner. And the warehouse #7 area isn't really big, not to mention that it's not outdoor either, the queue definitely creates a clout on its own!

We got in the queue around 5 PM, and it was already full of people and when the check-in counter opened… It was pretty chaotic, especially since the Royal Prince Cruise wasn't the only operator that opened their check-in counter at the time.

Check-in spot for dinner cruise in Bangkok at the warehouse #7 in Asiatique the Riverfront.

Before getting in line, make sure that you're queueing in the right spot for the operator that you booked. Otherwise, it's going to be super hectic and Bangkok's hot weather really didn't help in that situation. LOL.

When queueing, make sure to get your voucher ready. It doesn't matter whether you print it or just have it ready on your phone, you can always make the check-in staff's job easier when you already have it ready when they check you in.

Mind you, when we got on the dinner cruise with Royal Princess in Bangkok, the staff basically had to check your voucher manually in the printed manifest before they handed you your boarding pass. So your initiative would definitely help them in the process!

Boarding for Dinner Cruise in Bangkok

When you check in, pay attention to what the staff says about your boarding time and pier. In case they forget to inform you, take the initiative to clarify which pier the cruise will depart so you can get there on time.

During check-in, the staff will give you a boarding pass and a sticker that you can paste on your chest with your seat number. The boarding information wasn't written on the boarding pass, that's why staying informed about the boarding time and gate is important if you don't want to miss the ship!

The boarding pass for Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok, Thailand.

In our case, we boarded from Pier 1 at Asiatique the Riverfront at 7 PM. I'm not sure if it's the pier for Royal Princess Cruise only or if they take turns with other cruise operators that depart from Asiatique, but that's why it's important to keep informed about the boarding pier for your dinner cruise in Bangkok.

Since we still had time after checking where Pier 1 was located, we got a chance to stroll around the waterfront and even managed to have a few drinks at Bla Bla Bali cafe while waiting for our boarding time.

The good thing about booking a dinner cruise in Bangkok from Asiatique is that you won't get bored when you have to wait since you'll have plenty of things to do. Whether you get on the Ferris wheel or just sip a drink or two at the cafe nearby. Watching the sunset from the waterfront is quite great too!

Asiatique the Riverfront in Bangkok, Thailand.

As the boarding time was at 7 PM, we reached the pier half an hour before and it was already crowded with people queueing! Another thing that we noticed is that the pier was split into two sections since there's another queue for another cruise operator, so it's important to ask around which cruise operator they were queueing for to make sure you get to the right line.

When it's close to the boarding time, the staff will also start rising the sign with the cruise operator brand. We also saw Royal Princess Cruise sign to get closer before they started allowing us to board the ship.

The boarding process was quite straightforward, although you can expect the chaos here and there too. There will be a staff checking your boarding pass to ensure that you board the right ship, and once you're in you can ask the staff to pinpoint your seat based on the seat number sticker given by the check-in staff.

The Dinner Cruise Experience in Bangkok with Royal Princess

We were already aware that our seat was on the first floor as it was written on our boarding pass. However, I'm not sure if we even had the option to choose which floor we would be seated on when we booked the ticket via online travel agencies like Klook , GetYourGuide , or Viator .

Based on our experience, the seat assignment could be a hit or miss when we booked the experience online through these platforms. When we booked the Calypso Ladyboy show , we got a front seat which was basically the best view to see the performance. But our seat for the dinner cruise with Royal Princess in Bangkok was pretty lousy.

Seat Assignment for Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok, Thailand

My boyfriend and I during our Royal Princess dinner cruise in Bangkok, Thailand.

We didn't get direct access to the nightlight view of Bangkok from Chao Phraya River, which was basically the point of us joining the dinner cruise in the first place. However, the good thing is that we were close to the buffet table so it was pretty easy for us to take the food as we enjoyed the dinner.

If you could choose the seating arrangement when booking a Chao Phraya dinner cruise in Bangkok with Royal Princess Cruise, I'd personally recommend a seat on the second floor. Even better if you can get a window seat!

As we sat on the first floor of the cruise ship, I had to admit that the vibe was no different from when we had dinner in a buffet restaurant. Maybe it would've been better if we got seated on a window seat, but we didn't so… We definitely didn't get the full experience from this Royal Princess dinner cruise in Bangkok!

The welcome drink at Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Buffet Menu at Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok, Thailand

When it comes to the buffet menu, I think Royal Princess Cruise offers a wide range of delicious food that's really top-notch, considering we didn't pay too much for this experience. Honestly, I'd pay $25 USD for a similar buffet experience!

As we got seated, the welcome drink was already served. I think it was a mocktail rather than a cocktail since it didn't taste alcoholic. But it was pretty nice, I don't usually drink the colorful drink but I had it with no issue so it wasn't bad!

The MC also announced that the steak section was located on the second floor, while each floor should have the same type of buffet menu from Asian, Western, and seafood. That's also the reason why I think the seat on the second floor will be better since you'll most likely be near the steak section!

The buffet at Royal Princess Cruise Dinner in Bangkok, Thailand.

The menu varies from salad and Thai buffet, to sushi and oysters! For desserts, they also serve sliced fruits and cakes. If you're a vegetarian or vegan, you can still book this Royal Princess dinner cruise and add a note to make sure that they'll be informed about your diet so you'll get the special meals accordingly. However, I'm not sure how effective it would be if you book through platforms like Klook or Viator .

My reasoning is that I added a note about the fact that we came on my birthday month, and since they advertised the “free birthday cake” on the birthday month, no one seems to be aware of my additional note. So if you're a vegan or vegetarian considering Royal Princess for your Chao Phraya cruise experience, you may want to confirm it first before making a reservation!

Buffet menu at Chao Phraya river cruise with Royal Princess.

But if you have no issue when it comes to your diet, I'm pretty sure that Royal Princess Cruise experience will be quite satisfying for you since the food was delicious… My personal favorite was the sushi, although I have to be honest that their oysters and prawns weren't as good as I imagined.

Their dessert was also pretty nice, although I strictly only eat chocolate dessert and nothing else. The steak was pretty small per portion, it was okay but it wasn't really worth going back and forth to the second floor.

The Night View at Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok, Thailand

Since we were seated on the first floor with no direct access to window, the only way for us to truly enjoy the night view of Bangkok from the cruise was to go upstairs to the third floor. Some lucky guests also got their seats on the third floor, but I imagine it wouldn't be convenient if it were raining. LOL

But then again, always expect the crowd since you won't be the only one thinking that the best view to enjoy the Bangkok city light from the cruise is to get to the upper deck. We couldn't even enjoy as much on the third floor, but we found a nice spot on the deck on the second floor where we got a chance to take a few photos of Bangkok city lights.

FAQ About Chao Phraya River Cruise

In this section, I'm going to answer some of the frequently asked questions about Chao Phraya River Cruise in Bangkok that I found on the internet based on my firsthand experience with Royal Princess Cruise. So, here we go!

Is Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise worth it?

Since there are a lot of cruise operators that offer Chao Phraya River Cruise in Bangkok, you may want to consider which one you want to go for based on your budget and other factors that you may want to prioritize.

As for my boyfriend and me, we just did it for the sake of the experience so choosing the most affordable Chao Phraya River Cruise option, like Royal Princess, sufficed. It wasn't too expensive and the food was edible while we could still enjoy the night view of Bangkok from the ship as every other cruise operator that probably sells thrice the Royal Princess Cruise's price!

Considering we only paid $25 USD per pax, it was really a good deal and I'd say it was worth the experience indeed!

How long is Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise?

Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise in Bangkok, Thailand.

Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise usually lasts around 2 hours. When we took the Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok, we finished at around 9.30 PM.

It's really up to you whether you want to enjoy the buffet first or you want to take some snapshots of Bangkok city light when everyone's eating. However, keep in mind that some food served is limited so if you prioritize snapshots when the crowd is low, you're risking not getting to try all the buffet menus they serve on the cruise!

How Much Does a Dinner Cruise Cost in Bangkok?

Given there are a lot of cruise operators offering dinner cruise in Bangkok, the price varies from around $25 to even $100 USD. I think the type of cruise also matters since there are some ships that look quite fancy, and I imagine the cost to get on a dinner cruise there would be much more expensive!

While Royal Princess Dinner Cruise is considered to be an affordable dinner cruise on Chao Phraya, it's not the cheapest in the market. When I checked online travel agencies like Viator , I found the River Star Princess Dinner Cruise , which seems to be slightly cheaper than Royal Princess .

If you're looking for a more luxurious experience, you can also consider the Manohra Luxurious Dinner Cruise that departs from Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort.

cruise on the chao phraya river

Chao Phraya River Cruise probably appears in every post about traveling to Bangkok , and I can understand why. The river is the largest watershed in Thailand, which is often called the river of kings.

In addition, joining the excursion for dinner cruise on Chao Phraya in Bangkok also allow you to enjoy the city view from afar while enjoying the buffet meals. It's definitely a great way to experience Bangkok at its finest!

With so many cruise operators that offer this service, Royal Princess Dinner Cruise in Bangkok excels in a way that it offers an affordable service with top-notch quality when it comes to the food and beverages served in the buffet.
