Escape the beaten paths and discover a side of Paris few tourists get to see. Cruise to Paris and head to Canal St. Martin to find hip boutiques and cafes with verandas overlooking the water. Then, head to the less-crowded top decks of Montparnasse Tower or the Arc de Triomphe for Paris vistas.

🏆 Editor's #1 Choice

✔️ tested by author

After personally testing the top five Seine river cruises in Paris, I concluded that Bateaux Parisiens offers the best sightseeing experience .

It's Paris's most popular Seine boat tour, offering a well-rounded experience with virtually no downsides. ‍

Here are the top 3 reasons why:

  • Choose from two pre-recorded audio guides (14 languages) or enjoy live commentary.
  • Explore the city on a spacious and modern ship with excellent amenities.
  • Delight in the Parisian cityscape with 360° panoramic views.

The problem with river cruises in Paris is that there are too many to choose from !

Each promises a great experience, making the decision difficult.

The stakes are high — no one wants a poor choice to ruin an otherwise unforgettable vacation, especially in a city like Paris, which for many is a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Fortunately, the Cruise Detective is here to help.

I embarked on a 12-day journey to Paris to find definitive answers by trying out the five most popular river cruises and dinner cruises .

Each has thousands of glowing reviews, so the most reliable way to rank them was to experience them all .

This article gives you an incredibly detailed rundown of my findings.

‍ Note: I am not sponsored by any of the companies I review. I pay for my cruises with my hard-earned money and review anonymously to deliver thorough and unbiased reviews.

Summary & Comparison — 5 Best Seine River Cruises in Paris

cruises in paris

💡 Reviews are calculated using the weighted average and aggregate review count from GetYourGuide, Tripadvisor, and Viator.   I also include listings that I consider "arbitrary duplicates" of the original ones (e.g. the same cruise during the day vs night).

Paris River Cruise Itinerary

Every river cruise on this list follows the same itinerary (except the St. Martin Canal cruise), which runs between the Statue of Liberty and Pont de Sully (Sully Bridge). The route passes nearly 20 landmarks, including:

  • The Eiffel Tower
  • Pont Alexandre III
  • Musée d'Orsay
  • Grand Palais
  • Petit Palais
  • Institut de France
  • Île de la Cité
  • Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Hotel de Ville
  • Louvre Museum
  • Place de la Concorde
  • The Statue of Liberty

Is It Worth Trying A Seine River Cruise in Paris?

Yes, absolutely.

A caveat I’d add is that while the Eiffel Tower is beautiful to witness, particularly after 8 pm when the sparkling lights are on for 5 minutes at the start of every hour , I have to say that I found the Seine River to be less captivating compared to other cities like Budapest , London , or Amsterdam .

Next, let's get into the nitty gritty of our review.

1. 🏆 Best Paris River Cruise Overall (Bateaux Parisiens)

cruises in paris

✔️ Great All-Around Experience ✔️ Modern and Well-Equipped Ship ✔️ Great Location at the Eiffel Tower ✔️ Great Smartphone Audio Guide (Web Browser Based, Download Not Required) ✔️ Live Commentary and Built-In/Non-App Audio Guide Available ✔️ Covered Waiting Area ✔️ Vending Machines Available On Board

❌ Top Deck Seats Face the Sides, Not the Front ❌ Built-In Audio Guide is Unhygienic, Impractical and Has Low Sound Quality ❌ Live Narrator Hard to Understand in Non-French Languages ❌ Smatphone Based Audio Guide Requires Earbuds

Summary & Review — How Was It and What to Expect?

Miles ahead of other Seine river cruises in popularity based on review counts, I was very curious to try Bateaux Parisiens.

I wasn’t disappointed.

Bateaux Parisiens and its boats are top-notch — they have spacious decks, 360° panoramic views up top, cozy seats, vending machines and clean restrooms. However, the top deck seats face the sides, which means some neck turning.

Peak season crowds are inevitable , but you know how Paris is — it's bustling everywhere. I experienced it myself, but when I visited in October, it wasn't that bad.

They claim to be wheelchair accessible, and they sort of are. The main deck has numerous 1-step stairs scattered around, and there’s limited space to maneuver with a wheelchair.

Additionally, there’s no way for a wheelchair user to ascend the stairs to the top deck unless you can cast Wingardium Leviosa.

(Update: They have access ramps available, so you can to move around on the bottom deck. The top deck is inaccessible.)

The audio guide on the smartphone is crystal-clear and of high quality. They offer three different options (smartphone, phone dial, and live), which is a little excessive.

The location is right next to the Eiffel Tower, so finding it is easy peasy.

In summary, the sightseeing cruise was well-organized from start to finish , with no next to no inconveniences during my experience.

💡 Duplicate listing warning: This Bateaux Parisiens sightseeing cruise with over 9700 reviews is exactly the same as the cruise I recommend in this article. Same service, same price, same ship. It's a duplicate. Just mentioning this to clear up any confusion.

About Bateaux Parisiens

Bateaux Parisiens was founded in 1956 and currently operates a fleet of 8 sightseeing boats and 5 restaurant cruise boats .

Their compound is located just 2 minutes away from the Eiffel Tower. The company has a diverse workforce of 270 staff members from 37 nationalities, representing 50 different professions.

Each year, they welcome 3.4 million passengers on board their boats.

💡 Other popular options cruises and bundles from Bateaux Parisiens: 1. Cruise with Crepe Tasting 🥞 near the Eiffel Tower 2. Day or Sunset Cruise with Drink 🍷, Ice Cream 🍨 or Dessert 🍰 3. Cruise with Louvre Museum Entrance Ticket 🎫 4. 2-Hour Lunch Cruise on the Seine

Detailed Breakdown — During The Cruise

cruises in paris

  • The ship is a modern and spacious double-decker with a 400-person capacity. For the best views and comfortable seating, head to the upper deck.
  • Bateaux Parisiens has 8 sightseeing ships in its fleet, so you’re experience might be slightly different than pictured here.

The Lower Deck

  • Seating downstairs is divided into two types: window seats and middle seats. The window seats are preferable, as you can’t see much from the middle seats.
  • The lower deck also features a toilet (only urinal for men) and vending machines in the back.

The Top Deck

cruises in paris

  • The upper deck offers 360° panoramic views , which lets you enjoy the city panorama and snap photos.
  • The seating arrangement consists of benches oriented to the sides (without backrests), with a standing-only frontal section available for those who prefer to face ahead.

Cruise Itinerary & Views

cruises in paris

  • The cruise follows a standard itinerary , covering the area between the Eiffel Tower and the Austerlitz Bridge.

cruises in paris

  • Key landmarks along the route include the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides, the Palais Bourbon, Musée d’Orsay, Institut de France, Notre Dame Cathedral, the City Hall, the Conciergerie, the Louvre, the Obelisk, the Grand Palais.

cruises in paris

Audio Guide

  • The audio guide on Bateaux Parisiens offers three options .

Smartphone Audio Guide

cruises in paris

  • The best option is a mobile-friendly website available in 7 languages (French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Chinese).
  • It offers clear audio and high content quality , along with interactive features like photo filters and quizzes for each location.
  • Try the fun photo filter. You won’t regret it 😉
  • It's accessible through your browser. No app download is required.

Wired "Phone Dial" Audio Guide

cruises in paris

  • The second option is a wired audio guide that resembles a phone dial available at each window seat. They are literal dials that you could pull out from a hole and put next to your ear like an old phone. One could alternatively use plugged-in earbuds.
  • It comes in 14 languages (English, German, Chinese-Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, French, Arabic, Hindi).
  • Based on what I saw, not many people were using it . Maybe due to hygiene concerns? It had basic controls (change language, change volume) and subpar audio quality (like on an old phone).

Live Audio Commentary

cruises in paris

  • A live guide is also onboard , offering narration in multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, and German, which can be heard everywhere on the ship.
  • However, his heavy accent in languages other than French made them hard to understand . Personally, I found the smartphone option satisfactory if I wanted audio commentary.

2. 🥈 Second-Best Paris River Cruise (Bateaux Mouches)

cruises in paris

✔️ Great All-Around Experience ✔️ Modern, Massive and Well-Equipped Ship ✔️ Great Location at the Alma - Marceau metro ✔️ Great Loudspeaker Commentary in English ✔️ Covered Waiting Area ✔️ Air-Conditioned Waiting Lounge ✔️ All Seats Face the Front

❌ No Bar or Vending Machines On Board ‍

Bateaux Mouches offers a slightly different yet stellar sightseeing experience in the same weight class as Bateaux Parisiens.

Located near the Alma-Marceau metro station, it’s a short walk from the Eiffel Tower .

The assembly area has a covered waiting area , an air-conditioned waiting lounge , and a ticket office.

Paid parking is also available (for free if you go on one of their dinner cruises ).

Their ships are massive, double-decker vessels capable of accommodating over 1000 passengers each at a time.

The upper deck of these boats offers 360° panoramic views and front facings seats (vs. side facing on Bateaux Parisiens  — this way, you don’t have to turn your necks constantly), ideal for photo opportunities.

The lower deck provides comfortable outdoor and indoor seating , though with a lesser panorama. The lower deck is spacious enough to accommodate wheelchair users .

The audio guide , broadcast via loudspeakers in English , offers high-quality sound and informative content, enhancing the sightseeing experience.

One notable feature is that they turn off the lights after dusk to eliminate window glare on the bottom deck.

Overall, Bateaux Mouches offers a memorable tour of Paris’ key sights along the Seine . There are no significant drawbacks, making it my number two choice.

💡 Why so few reviews? Bateaux Mouches is the second most popular cruise company in Paris, on Par with Bateaux Parisiens. They have five sightseeing and five dinner cruise ships running day and night. They've got a vast compound where I stood in line. It was brimming with people. This reality isn't well reflected online for some odd reason. They seriously need a proper online presence.

Video: Bateaux Mouches River Cruise Review

About bateaux mouches.

Bateaux Mouches, founded in 1949 , offers Seine sightseeing and dinner cruises with a fleet of 15 boats. It stands as the 4th top-paid attraction in Paris, serving 2.5 million visitors annually .

During peak seasons, the operation supports over 450 employees , and each sightseeing boat has a capacity of 1,000 passengers .

Since its inception, Bateaux Mouches has welcomed over 150 million guests.

  • The assembly area includes a ticket office, parking spots, an air-conditioned waiting lounge, and vending machines.

  • To board, head to the large building and get in line. There weren’t any security checks when I went. After validating your ticket, you’ll enter a covered waiting area equipped with vending machines and an air-conditioned waiting lounge .

During The Cruise

cruises in paris

  • The ship is a massive double-decker that has the capacity to accommodate over 1000 passengers on some ships. The upper deck provides better views, as usual.
  • These boats can get crowded , but they have a large capacity to handle the crowd. Crowds are a common occurrence in Paris, it’s something we all have to accept.
  • Bateux Mouches’s fleet comprises 6 sightseeing boats , so your experience may vary.

cruises in paris

  • The outdoor seating arrangement (on the sides of the ship) comprises two columns of chairs, each two chairs wide, with backrests facing the front. These have better views than the indoor seats, but they don’t offer 360° panoramic views like on the upper deck.
  • The indoor seating arrangement has two columns of chairs, each three chairs wide, with backrests facing the front and a central aisle for walking. This area is great for warming up during winter, but it does not offer as much of a view.
  • A nice touch I discovered is that they turn off the lights when it’s dark, allowing you to see outside without the glare.

cruises in paris

  • The upper deck offers 360° panoramic views , which lets you enjoy the panorama of the city and take photos.
  • The seating arrangement comprises two columns of chairs, each three chairs wide , with backrests facing the front and a central aisle for walking.

Audio Commentary (Broadcast Through Loudspeakers)

  • The audio guide on Bateaux Mouches is broadcast in English only through loudspeakers. I found it informative, enjoyable, and high quality - both in terms of sound and content.
  • 📅 Schedule: Departures run frequently from 10 am to 10 pm.
  • 🌐 Wifi: Not available ❌

3.🥉 Best Paris River Cruise with French Music (Vedettes de Paris)

cruises in paris

✔️ Great All-Around Experience ✔️ Modern and Well-Equipped Ship ✔️ Great Location at the Eiffel Tower ✔️ Bar Available On Board ✔️ Covered Waiting Area

❌ No Built-In Audio Guide Available, Only Optional Smartphone App ‍

If you're looking for a more intimate, cozy, and smaller-scale cruising experience, Vedettes de Paris is the perfect choice compared to sightseeing cruises, which handle massive crowds daily.

They are situated in a prime location near the Eiffel Tower and Bateaux Parisiens, which is perfect.

Their  small-to-medium-sized, double-decker ships  can accommodate around  220 passengers  each.

The  lower deck  features open-air built-in benches and indoor standard seating with limited views, whereas the  upper deck provides 360° panoramic views  of Paris – making it the prime spot for this cruise.

They played  pop music on their ships on the loudspeakers  on this cruise.

Update (2024 Jan):  They changed this to quintessential French songs so visitors can enjoy that quintessential Parisian vibe we all expect.

A downloadable audio guide app is available in six languages. Alternatively, you can join a  cruise with live narration in English and French .

On this Seine River cruise, you can  explore Parisian landmarks  between the Eiffel Tower and the Austerlitz Bridge, such as Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, and the Grand Palais.

Video: Vedettes de Paris River Cruise Review

About vedettes de paris.

Vedettes de Paris was established in 1976 and offers sightseeing cruises on the Seine River with smaller, more intimate boats in Paris.

The cruises depart from the Eiffel Tower and include guided day cruises and evening aperitif cruises with music.

The company has a dedicated staff of 70 employees .

💡 Other popular options cruises and bundles from Vedettes de Paris: 1. Seine Cruise with Drinks 🍷 and Snacks 🌭 2. Seine River Morning Guided Sightseeing Cruise 🌄 3. Family-Friendly River Seine Guided Cruise 👪
  • A 60-minute Seine river cruise with an audio guide (via downloadable app) in 6 languages . This identical cruise by the same company has a live English/French narrator on board instead.

  • The assembly area includes a ticket office, parking spots, restaurants (the Bistro Parisien), and various vendors selling food, drinks, and coffee. Just head over to Bateaux Parisiens to find them.

cruises in paris

  • To board, find the ticket office — the boarding area is right next to it . Vedettes de Paris has a covered waiting area, like most other cruises.
  • 🗺️ Meeting point: 2 Port de Suffren, 75007 Paris, France

cruises in paris

  • The ship is a medium-sized double-decker that has the capacity to accommodate 220 passengers. There’s a wide variety of seating arrangements, so bear with me.
  • Note that Vedettes de Paris operates different types of boats, so your boat may be slightly different from the one I experienced.

cruises in paris

  • The ship’s outdoor seating consists of built-in benches located both at the front and back. However, they are not front-facing . The toilet and stairs to the upper deck are located at the back.

cruises in paris

  • The indoor section has standard front-facing seats with backrests, which are located in the middle (below) and front areas (above).

cruises in paris

  • This deck doesn’t provide true 360° panoramic views, as seen in the photos. It’s better to go to the upper deck for that.

cruises in paris

  • The upper deck provides a 360° panoramic view of the city, perfect for taking photos.
  • Seating-wise, there are two columns of chairs, each three chairs wide, with backrests facing the front and a central aisle for walking. There are a handful of side-facing benches at the front.

cruises in paris

  • There is no built-in audio guide available on this cruise. Instead, the ship’s loudspeakers play pop music. Update (2024 Jan): The company switched to quintessential French songs.
  • There is a mobile app available in six languages (French, English, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, and German), that offers a glimpse into the history of Paris. Using the phone's GPS, it automatically plays the commentary corresponding to the attraction. I haven’t tested it (since I had no earbuds on me), so I can’t comment on the sound and content quality.

Live Commentary

  • ‍ ‍ Alternatively, the company offers this nearly identical cruise with live commentary in French and English . It runs every day until 18:30.
  • 📅 Schedule: Departures run frequently from 11 am to 9 pm.
  • ♿ Wheelchair accessible: Not accessible ❌
  • 👶 Baby stroller accessible: Accessible ✔️
  • % Children discounts: free for infants (age 0-3), 9€ tickets (age 4-11) ✔️ ‍

4. Hop-On/Hop-Off Paris River Cruise (Batobus)

cruises in paris

✔️ 9 Hop-On Hop-Off Stops ✔️ Unlimited Use for 24–48 Hours ✔️ Can be Useful for Transportation and Getting Around

❌ Not Ideal for Sightseeing as There Are No Great Views. ❌ No Audio Guide available. ❌ The Top Deck is Not Accessible. ❌ If the Sun Shines Too Strongly, It Can Get Hot and Blinding. ❌ No Bar or Vending Machines Available on Board. ❌ Mediocre Ship

Batobus is a hop-on hop-off cruise that provides a flexible way to travel up and down the Seine, with nine different stops near major Parisian attractions.

It is not ideal for sightseeing, and it lacks basic amenities like an audio guide, toilet, bar, or vending machines.

The ship, designed more for transportation than sightseeing, is a single-decker accommodating up to 150-200 passengers . In other words, it lacks a top deck and there are no 360° panoramic views.

The main deck has a wacky seating arrangement , with seats facing every direction. The worst offenders are the seats in the middle of the ship, which offer virtually no views whatsoever.

The ship has a small open-air area in the rear, where people flock to shoot unobstructed photos of the Eiffel Tower or get some fresh air.

The views are rather limited even if you sit next to windows since you’re limited to seeing one bank of the Seine or the other.

Because the ship has lots of glass panels, if the Sun shines from a bad angle, not only it does it get hot, but you won't see anything either.

The cruise follows a standard itinerary between the Eiffel Tower and the Austerlitz Bridge, encompassing landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral.

Overall, I recommend skipping this cruise and instead using the metro for transportation and opting for a proper sightseeing cruise for a better experience.

Video: Batobus River Cruise Review

About batobus.

Batobus, established in 1989 , offers a hop-on hop-off river service along the Seine in Paris, featuring nine stops at major attractions . It operates a fleet of eight boats with a capacity of 200 passengers each and additional boats holding 150 passengers.

  • A 60-minute Seine river cruise with NO audio guide .
  • Food or drinks are NOT available onboard.
  • You can embark/disembark as many times as you’d like since this is an unlimited hop-on, hop-off cruise.
💡 Other popular ecruises and bundles from Batobus: 1. Batobus/Tootbus Hop-on Hop-off Bus 🚍🚏 with Seine River Cruise

cruises in paris

  • I’ve only been to the Notre Dame stop — not sure how the others are. There’s an indoor ticket office there, but otherwise, it’s an open-air area with Batobus flags.
  • Note: Batobus has several stations along the Seine, as you'd expect from a hop-on hop-off company.

cruises in paris

  • The ship is a relatively small single-decker with a 200-person capacity.
  • This ship isn’t great for sightseeing compared to every other cruise I tried. There aren’t any 360° views either since there’s no top deck.

cruises in paris

  • The ship has mostly indoor seats , but they open the windows in the warmer season, which is nice since even in October, the sunlight can be blinding and it can be hot inside.
  • The seats face every direction , some with virtually non-existent panorama (i.e. the middle seats, as seen in the photo above).
  • This reinforces the idea that this boat is designed for transportation rather than sightseeing.
  • The side glasses are transparent, while the roof panels are opaque.

cruises in paris

  • There’s a small open-air area in the back.
  • Unlike most Seine river cruises, Batobus ships are single-decked, meaning there's only a ground floor deck .

cruises in paris

  • Batobus does not offer audio guides or commentary . However, an employee announces stops in English and French.
  • 📅 Schedule: Departures run frequently from 10 am to 5 pm (Mon-Thu) and 10 am to 7 pm (Fri-Sun) , allowing for flexible arrival times — simply show up when it's convenient for you. s Not Operate Every Day of The Week ❌ Only Avai

✔️ Great All-Around Experience ✔️ Slow Paced Experience ✔️ Covers Unique Itinerary (St. Martin Canal) ✔️ Great Live Commentary by Experienced Guide in English/French ✔️ Bar Available On Board ✔️ Covers Part of The Seine Until Orsay Museum

❌ The Location is Hard to Reach ❌ No Covered Waiting Area ❌ Does Not Operate Every Day of The Week ❌ Only Available at 10 am/2.30 pm ❌ The Upper Deck Seats Are Side-Facing ❌ The Ship is Decent but Slightly Dated ❌ The Ride is a Bit Too Long (2-2.5h) ❌ Does Not Cover the Eiffel Tower

Paris Canal’s St. Martin Canal cruise offers a distinctive 2.5-hour experience, starting from Parc de la Villette and ending at Musée d’Orsay.

This journey avoids mainstream Parisian landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, instead offering a more authentic view of the city through the St. Martin Canal .

The cruise ship, though slightly dated, accommodates 500 passengers and features a double-decker design.

The lower deck provides indoor seating and a small bar, while the upper deck offers a panoramic view of the surroundings.

The seating , more comfortable on the top deck, includes benches and chairs, with some premium spots in the captain’s heated cabin.

An interesting feature of this cruise is the option to start either from Parc de la Villette or Musée d’Orsay the Seine.

The itinerary is rich in local charm , navigating several canal locks and a mile-long tunnel, presenting a side of Paris less seen by tourists.

The live audio commentary in English and French , delivered by an experienced guide, adds depth to the experience.

Despite its no-frills approach and the sometimes long waiting times at canal locks, Paris Canal’s cruise offers a unique and intimate glimpse into the heart of Paris , making it a worthwhile experience for those looking to explore beyond the typical tourist path.

About paris canal co..

Paris Canal, established in 1977 , specializes in diverse cruises on the Seine, the Marne, and the Paris canals. With a dedicated team and 40 years of history , they offer sightseeing trips, group cruises, and private events, focusing on more unique, lesser-known parts of Paris.

💡 For clarity's sake, here are all the cruises on the St. Martin Canal: 1. St. Martin Canal Cruise TO Musée d'Orsay (2.30 PM) 2. St. Martin Canal Cruise TO Musée d'Orsay (10 AM) 3. St. Martin Canal Cruise FROM Musée d'Orsay (10 AM / 2.30 PM)
  • A 2.5-hour long St. Martin canal cruise with drop-off at Musée d’Orsay. In other words, you won’t see the Eiffel Tower from this cruise.
  • There’s live English/French narration on board.
  • Food or drinks are available at the onboard bar.

cruises in paris

  • Paris Canal cruise starts from Parc de la Villette in the 19th district . There’s a park nearby which is worth exploring, so I’d come an hour earlier to do so.
  • Alternatively, you can embark at the Musée d’Orsay and sail up the St. Martin Canal. Booking this is possible on Viator , but not on GetYourguide.

cruises in paris

  • There’s no major boarding infrastructure at Parc de la Villette, as this is quite a niche boat tour. It’s open air, but you can take shelter under nearby buildings if the weather is bad.
  • 🗺️ Meeting point: 211 Av. Jean Jaurès, 75019 Paris, France
  • Note: It's possible to have this trip in reverse e.g. boarding on the Seine and disembarking on Parc de Villete (Canal St. Martin). Note that the ticket is one-way only.

cruises in paris

  • The ship is a large, no-frills and slightly dated double-decker with a 500-person capacity . As always, for the best views and comfortable seating, head to the upper deck.

cruises in paris

  • Most of this deck has indoor seating with feeble-looking yet surprisingly sturdy but uncomfortable front-facing seats with backrests. You can’t see much from here and forget about 360° panoramic views.

cruises in paris

  • The outdoor section at the back and front of the ship does have better views, but alas, there are only a few cold metal seats available.

cruises in paris

  • There is a clean toilet and a small bar serving hot drinks and snacks on this level. Additionally, there’s a staircase in the center that leads up to the Captain’s cabin.

cruises in paris

  • The upper deck offers a 360° panoramic view of the St. Martin Canal and the surrounding cityscape. The only imperfection is that all of the seats are facing the sides instead of the front.

cruises in paris

  • There are three different types of seating options available.
  • The first type is two rows of bench-style seating (on the sides), followed by two rows of mixed benches and ordinary chairs in a 50/50 ratio in the center.
  • All of these were more comfortable than the seats downstairs.

cruises in paris

  • Bonus: There are a handful of seats available in the captain’s cabin , which is heated! I really appreciated this feature during the cold weather in November.

cruises in paris

  • Unlike most other cruises, Paris Canal’s cruise takes place on the St. Martin Canal , starting from Parque de la Villette and concluding on the Seine by the Musée d’Orsay.

cruises in paris

  • You will experience several canal lock crossings and a mile-long tunnel .

cruises in paris

  • I found the cruise to be much more interesting than the Seine , and the surrounding cityscape was more charming, authentic and offbeat. ‍
  • However, there was considerable waiting at the canal locks , where you transition from one section of the canal to the next.

cruises in paris

  • Note: The itinerary doesn’t cover the Eiffel Tower.

cruises in paris

  • Paris Canal’s cruises offer a live audio commentary in English and French , performed by an experienced guide who provides informative and interesting insights and is also available to answer questions.
  • 📅 Schedule: 10:00 and 14:30. Please check the schedule as they do not run every day.
  • % Children discounts: free for infants (age 0-3), 15-20€ tickets (children, teenagers and seniors) ✔️ ‍
  • 🚗 Parking: Paid parking available near the meeting point ✔️

  • Plan Your Trip

When taking a Seine cruise in Paris, keeping the weather in mind is important for having an enjoyable experience:

Sunny Day If sunny, an open-top upper deck on the boat would be ideal. You can take in full views of landmarks like Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower while staying protected from the sun in the shade. Sunscreen and hats are still a good idea.

Rainy/Overcast Day Many boats have both enclosed and open areas. If rain is forecasted, opting for a boat with indoor seating or retractable glass covers can allow you to stay dry. Bring lightweight raincoats or umbrellas as a backup. Check the wind direction so you don’t get stuck in the rain when boarding or disembarking.

Cold Weather If cruising in fall or winter months when it’s chilly, dress warmly in layers. Coats, scarves and gloves are recommended. Some boats may have climate controls or provide blankets so check ahead. Sipping hot chocolate or coffee can help keep you warm too!

Windy Conditions Higher winds on the river may impact the boat’s stability. If very windy, consider rescheduling since you likely won’t be able to enjoy upper deck seating.

No matter the forecast, confirming if your specific cruise will run as scheduled is advised. Checking for potential cancellations due to weather can help avoid disappointments. Being prepared for diverse Parisian weather will enable soaking in the magic of the Seine!

Most major boats and tour companies offer cruises throughout the day, typically starting as early as 10am and running as late as 9:30pm in the summer. Schedules vary by company and season with hours being more limited in the off-season between November-March. Lunch cruises are very common, lasting 1-2 hours in the early-mid afternoon. Dinner/evening cruises typically have boarding around 8pm and run for 1.5-2 hours.

Some companies offer flexible boarding times for independent, hop-on hop-off style cruises during the day which allow you to sightsee at your own pace. Smaller tour boats and private river yacht charters may have more flexibility for custom departure times. Cruise frequency ranges from boats departing every 30 minutes up to every 1-2 hours depending on the season, with more time in between departures earlier/later in the day.

Most cruises run for 1-2 hours in duration, many including boarding time and allowing time for commentary. Some full meal cruises can last 2+ hours. In summary – typical Seine cruise hours range from morning through evening, with greatest flexibility and frequencies through midday and early evening. But exploring your specific cruise company’s schedule is the best way to confirm details. Let me know if you have any other cruise operation questions!

When taking a Seine River cruise in Paris, you’ll have options for different durations to suit your schedule and interests:

The most common cruise duration is 1-1.5 hours. This allows you to cruise along the Seine at a comfortable pace while seeing top attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, Louvre Museum, and ornate bridges from unique vantage points. Cruises of this length will have running commentary to point out photo spots and give history.

Two hour lunch or dinner cruises are also very popular. These allow more relaxed dining and take in wider views between the Paris landmarks, heading both downstream and back upstream. Meals are served on board these cruises.

Some companies offer half-hour to 45 minute compact mini-cruises. These offer a quick glimpse at the Seine highlights if you’re short on time. The pace and route is more direct.

At the longer end, some full-day and multi-hour cruises are available for those really wanting an immersive experience. These may include multiple stops or activities like museum visits in addition to the Seine sightseeing.

River yacht charters can potentially customize cruise durations, but usually run in the 1-3 hour range. Private boats allow you to fully control the timing.

So in summary, first-timers may want to opt for a classic 1-1.5 hour river cruise, while return visitors could consider a longer or meal-inclusive option. Checking different company offerings for duration and scheduling will ensure the best Seine cruise fit.

The departure point for your Seine River cruise is an important piece of planning, as major cruise companies use various docks along the river. Most boats leave from ports near the Eiffel Tower or Notre Dame Cathedral given their convenient locations.

Common Eiffel Tower embarkation docks include Port de la Bourdonnais, just east of the landmark, and Port de Suffren to the west. Using these ports, your boat can head straight under the Eiffel Tower shortly after departure for great views. Another top departure point is Port Saint Paul by Notre Dame in the heart of Paris near lively shops and cafes. Cruise companies like Vedettes du Pont Neuf and Bateaux Parisiens use Port Saint Paul.

Depending on your specific cruise’s route, you may also embark at locations like Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre, Jardin des Plantes, or further east at Bercy Village. Check your tour information carefully for the meeting location. Third party sellers may use docks across from the islands in the Seine like Ile de la Cité. Arriving early is wise to account for walking time to your departure dock.

Maps of the Seine will display the various port names to confirm where your cruise embarks once you’ve booked. Central meeting spots like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame make getting on and off boats convenient as nearby transit options abound. But no matter which dock you start from, gorgeous river views await!

Seine Cruise Insider Tips

Here are some of the best insider tips for taking a cruise on the Seine River in Paris:

  • Avoid the large, crowded Bateaux Mouches tourist boats if you want a more intimate experience. Look for small boat cruises or private boat rentals instead.
  • Cruises in the morning or late afternoon tend to be less crowded than midday. Evening cruises can be romantic as you’ll see the monuments lit up.
  • Sit on the right side of the boat if possible when heading downstream from the Eiffel Tower towards the Notre Dame Cathedral. This side offers the best views.
  • Many boats have open air tops, so dress appropriately for the weather. Layers are a good idea.
  • Bring a good camera! The views of the Parisian monuments from a unique vantage point on the Seine are ideal photo opportunities.
  • You can bring your own snacks and drinks for a picnic-style experience on most boat cruises. Some smaller cruises may provide refreshments.
  • Check when bridges go up to allow boat traffic to pass underneath. Times vary, but this lets larger boats continue down or up the Seine.
  • Look into combo deals that pair a Seine cruise with activities like a city bus tour or museum visits for good value.

Paris (Le Havre) France Port Guide

Le Havre is a city in the Normandy region of France, located on the northern shore of the country. While Le Havre has a long maritime history, today it is mostly known to travelers for being the gateway port to Paris. When you cruise to Paris, France, you’ll actually be arriving in Le Havre, which is the second largest port in France. In fact, it’s name even means “the port”.

Visitors to Le Havre on a Paris cruise port of call from a European cruise will find a temperate oceanic climate that is often windy when you’re right by the coast. Luckily, going inland to Paris usually finds more temperate weather, particularly in the months when cruise ships sail to Le Havre and Paris, which is typically in the spring and summer during northern Europe and transatlantic cruise itineraries.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Paris, you can still discover the beauty of the country on one of our France cruises . Browse our luxury cruises to France below.

Take a walk or drive by what may be the world’s most stately looking roundabout thanks to the Arc de Triomphe. Located in the middle of a busy roundabout, the Arc de Triomphe grandly stands at the western end of the Champs-Elysees. Go up to the top of it for an excellent photo op of the famous Champs-Elysees boulevard and to marvel at the organized chaos of the cars zipping around below you.

Mont Saint Michel

Along the coast of Normandy is Mont Saint Michel Abbey, which is an incredible example of Norman architecture. The stunning site is magnificent to behold due to its location atop a rock towering above the ocean. When you visit, take time to walk the cobblestone walkways where you’ll find shops and cafes to tuck into. You’ll also want to see the awe-inspiring interior of the abbey.

D-Day Landing Beaches

Those who are interested in learning more about the history of World War II will want to visit Omaha Beach, where D-Day occurred. While in Normandy you can also visit Pointe du Hoc, where Allied forces strategically climbed the 100-foot promontory to better battle the Axis forces; the American Cemetery of Colleville, where American troops are buried; and Pegasus Bridge, which is the landing location of the British Parachute Brigade.

Famous Churches

In Paris, you can’t miss seeing the curved steeples of Sacré-Cœur, perched on a hill in the Montmartre neighborhood overlooking the city center; or the gothic architecture of Notre Dame Cathedral with its gargoyles seeming to keep a watch over the square below. In Le Havre, you can visit St. Joseph’s Church, which was built after World War II decimated the city and has a modern style designed by renowned architect Auguste Perret.

Tour the Louvre

If you’re into art, you can’t miss a visit to the Louvre, one of the most famous art museums in the world. It houses the Mona Lisa and a vast array of other paintings and sculptures. Even its entrance is artful since you arrive to the museum by going through a glass pyramid.

Sit at a Café

One of the iconic things to do in Paris is sit at a café and write in your journal or people-watch while eating a perfectly baked croissant and sipping a frothy cappuccino, of course. A great way to do this is on your free time during a Paris city tour shore excursion.

Palace of Versailles

In 1837 it was turned into a museum, and today it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Paris (Le Havre) Cruise Port

If you’re curious what shopping in a supermarket is like in France, you can find out during your Paris cruise port of call. Visit the Monoprix department store, which is located in Espace Coty mall and features a supermarket. There is also a small supermarket in Halles Centrales, the central market in Le Havre.

In Paris, you won’t want to miss trying its mouth-wateringly delicious crepes, baguettes with cheese spread, and chocolate croissants – or any one of the many, many other delightful pastries and cuisine you’ll come across. Unique dining experiences abound in Paris, from dining atop the Eiffel Tower to taking in a show with your meal at Moulin Rouge.

If visiting Normandy during your time in port, don’t miss out on some of the region’s delicacies, such as calvados and cider brandy, which you can drink or enjoy as an ingredient in the local cuisine such as pork with calvados and apples.

Culture & History of the Paris (Le Havre) Cruise Port

Le Havre’s history has long been linked to its harbor. The city began to grow substantially in the 18th and 19th centuries thanks to trade from the West Indies and the industrial revolution, respectively. Le Havre has a place in World War II history as the Battle of Normandy touched its center where thousands of lives were lost and property was damaged. Today, the city of Le Havre has been rebuilt and reflects a modernist style.

Though most civilians are aware of Le Havre due to the cruise ships that stop there, the port is also busy in other ways and regularly sees container traffic, oil tankers, and other industrial ships come through its harbor.

As you near Paris, you’ll begin to leave behind the commercial maritime industry and start to feel more of the romance of the country as the elegant culture and exquisite cuisine of Paris invites you into its folds.

French is the official language of Le Havre and Paris (and the rest of France), though you’ll find that many locals speak English.

Paris (Le Havre) Port Facilities & Location

As mentioned earlier, the cruise port for Paris is actually located about 120 miles to the northwest in the city of Le Havre. Located on English Channel and adjacent to the Seine River, Le Havre is in an excellently located spot that makes it easy for ships to call, and just a short distance away for travelers from some of France’s most iconic sites.

The cruise terminal has a long, steep gangway so physically impaired passengers should expect to need assistance. Once you’ve reached the inside of the cruise terminal, you’ll find a welcome center with tourist information and complimentary wifi. Taxis are usually waiting outside the cruise terminal.

Getting to the city center of Le Havre from where cruise ships dock in the harbor takes about 25 minutes to walk. Sometimes there are free shuttles to the center of town, and you can also find taxis and a train station that takes you into town fairly affordably. However, most passengers leave behind Le Havre for the wonders of Paris or Normandy.

Transportation in Paris (Le Havre)

The easiest and most stress-free way to get to Paris from Le Havre is on a shore excursion that conveniently takes you there from your ship on a comfortable bus with a knowledgeable guide. You can do a city transfer shore excursion that gives you free time on your own for the day before catching the transfer back to the ship. There is also a train that runs between Paris and Le Havre that takes about two hours.

If you want to stay in Le Havre for the day, a shuttle is available between the cruise terminal and city center, and you’ll likely be dropped near City Hall or the Espace Coty. Car rentals are also available by the Paris cruise terminal of Le Havre. In addition, you’ll find a tram system within walking distance of the ship that will take you to the beach or other areas of the city and beyond.

Shopping Near the Paris (Le Havre) Cruise Port

In Paris, the Champs-Elysees is the famous shopping boulevard to head to, and is flanked by the Arc de Triomphe at one end. The Champs-Elysees has high street and luxury fashion houses lining it and lots of cafes mixed in as well, which are perfect for a break from your shopping spree.

In Le Havre, you’ll find several malls and a central market called Halles Centrales. The malls to head to are Espace Coty in the city center or the new Docks Vauban by the train station.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

France accepts the Euro and you’ll find ATMs dispensing Euro notes all around Paris. Tipping in France can be confusing since a service charge is required by law to be added to the bill in cafes and restaurants, typically in the amount of 15%. However, this amount doesn’t necessarily go to your server, so leaving a small additional tip in change or euro notes is appreciated. It’s common for people to round up the bill to the nearest euro for exceptional service or leave around 5% of the total bill.

Sharing is caring!

Are you planning a trip to Paris and looking for things to do? For free walking tours, Paris Greeters is a fabulous choice! Below you can read my review on the amazing tour my family of 4 took with this lovely organization.

This post about free paris walking tours was written by family travel expert marcie cheung and contains affiliate links which means if you purchase something from one of my affiliate links, i may earn a small commission that goes back into maintaining this blog..

Paris offers a whirlwind vacation with top attractions on both sides of the River Seine, beautiful architecture, historical landmarks, and much more. But it can be challenging to know where to start. Consider a free walking tour with Paris Greeters!

When it comes to free walking tours, Paris Greeters is the best. Their local tour guides work with you to plan an itinerary based on your family’s interests.

You could explore the Latin Quarter in the heart of Paris or one of the city’s suburbs.

Traveling to Paris as a family with young children, I knew I wanted to book a private tour that could accommodate us. Paris Greeters went above and beyond! Below, you’ll read my detailed review of one of the best walking tours in Paris.

Don’t have time to read a bunch of Paris blog posts and reviews? Here are some of our top picks for visiting Paris with kids.

Popular Paris Tours/Activities

  • Scavenger Hunt at the Musee d’Orsay (my kids voted this the BEST thing they did in Paris)
  • Paris Food Tour (We ate SO many yummy treats on our Food Tour)
  • Tootbus (this is a kid-friendly hop-on-hop-off bus)
  • Eiffel Tower (skip the line and go straight to the top)
  • Day Trip to Giverny and Versailles (it’s a great city break)
  • Flytographer photo shoot (they are easy to book and really affordable)

Kid-Friendly Paris Hotels

  • Hotel Aiglon (this is a quiet area near Luxembourg Garden, and it’s perfect for families)
  • Pullman Paris Eiffel Tower Hotel (there’s a shuttle to Disneyland or Giverny from here)
  • Newport Bay Club Resort (this is our favorite place to stay at Disneyland)

What is Paris Greeters?

Paris Greeters is an organization of volunteers passionate about sharing their city with visitors. The volunteers live all over Paris and its surrounding areas.

Their website has a spot to register for a free walking tour. Then, based on your information, they connect you with a volunteer.

But these aren’t skip-the-line tours of the Louvre Museum. Instead, it’s a great way to enjoy Paris from a more authentic perspective (and still see major landmarks, if you wish).

Volunteers are passionate about their amazing city. They’ll suggest walking tours in different neighborhoods while sharing all the intriguing facts along the way.

What happens before your tour.

A few weeks before our trip to Paris, I ran across a blog post about Paris Greeters. My husband and I are always looking for authentic experiences when traveling; this seemed the perfect way to do it.

I filled out the online form on their website, noting that we’d have a baby and a 3-year-old with us. A few days later, Paris Greeters proposed a walking tour of Boulogne, a suburb of Paris.

I had to Google it. This quiet neighborhood is known for 1930s Art Deco design. We excitedly confirmed the walking tour!

We kept in touch with our volunteer, Patrick Lucard, until the day of our free tour. This was helpful for planning the rest of our trip itinerary.

Book a Family Photo Shoot

Whenever we travel, we almost always book a family photo shoot with Flytographer. They are super easy, affordable, AND guarantee that I’ll be in some photos. You can get $25 off if you book through this link or use the code HAWAIITRAVEL.

Our Paris Greeters Walking Tour

We later learned that our volunteer, Patrick, was the President of Paris Boulogne Greeters. This is a “sister” or affiliated association of Pais Greeters. And he was beyond fabulous!

After we met him at the Michel Ange Auteuil Metro stop, he suggested we grab coffee like true Parisians. It was a great ice-breaker for our free walking tour!

We headed across the street to the bar to sip a cappuccino. In talking, we discovered he had just returned from a trip to Seattle a few weeks prior.

It was nice to see what he thought of our city before we explored it! It helped us trust Patrick, the way he found a common point of interest with us.

Visiting a Geniune Parisian Park

Since we had our 3-year-old, Patrick thought we’d like to visit a neighborhood park in Boulogne. We’d brought a stroller, and Patrick offered to push our son around.

This made the walk even more enjoyable! I wore our baby in our Tula baby carrier, which freed my husband up to take photos along the walking tour.

On our walk to the park, Patrick points out a vintage Art Nouveau “Metropolitan” sign by Hector Guimard. I’d seen this on a postcard but didn’t realize how rare it was to find. There are only two left in Paris!

Then, he showed us the different styles of architecture in the neighborhood. He explained that the second floor was the most desired floor and often featured a balcony—that’s where the builder would live!

A Review on Paris Greeters Authentic Free Walking Tour in Paris

The park was a really wonderful experience. We saw several nannies there with a handful of children. It was our first time in a park in Paris, and our son was ecstatic for the chance to run and play!

Patrick and I sat on a bench and talked about life. He told me that when he travels around Europe, it’s about seeing great architecture and experiencing the culture.

But he said that when he visits the United States, it’s like a dream vacation! I told him that we feel the same way when we visit Europe.

We also discussed the importance of learning other languages and exposing our children to different cultures through travel.

A Review on Paris Greeters Authentic Free Walking Tour in Paris

We decided to continue our walking tour and “look at the fishies,” so we headed to a nearby greenhouse.

Patrick told us this was a favorite spot to bring his daughters because it was never crowded. We only saw one person in the greenhouse, and she was sketching in a notebook.

It was really beautiful to see the different plants and to see the fish. They had just pruned so we didn’t get to see as many flowers as we had hoped. But it was still very relaxing.

We saw that it was raining outside, so we lingered a bit inside another greenhouse to stay warm and dry.

Exploring the Hotel Molitor Paris

Coming from Seattle, we never let a little rain interrupt our plans. But Patrick was quick to think on his feet and told us he had somewhere to show us.

He brought us to the Hotel Molitor Paris. Originally a public swimming pool in the 1930s, they kept the Art Deco vibe when they turned it into a hotel.

It was a stunning stop on our tour! It felt like the type of place where you could just relax and soak in the cool vibes.

Patrick took us inside to show us the original 1930s pool, which was breathtaking. He also took us inside the spa area so we could see the indoor pool.

Not only was it a great way to warm up and stay dry, but it was definitely somewhere we never would have seen without our guide.

He rounded out the walking tour by showing us more Art Deco homes and the Rugby stadium on our way back to the Metro station. By the time our 3-hour tour ended, we really felt like we were saying goodbye to a family member.

It was so much more than just a tour of a city.  My husband and I felt like we were in great hands.

My Thoughts on Our Paris Greeters Tour

When it comes to free walking tours, Paris Greeters is priceless! Our guide, Patrick, was thoughtful and passionate. He chose destinations we wouldn’t have seen as unknowing tourists in Paris.

He immediately put us at ease, and it truly felt like we were exploring Boulogne with a family friend! And you could really tell that he thought about what a family would be able to do on a Paris tour.

This was a highlight of our entire trip to Europe. I highly recommend Paris Greeters to anyone traveling to Paris. Whether you’re looking for quality free tour options or want a unique experience, this organization is an excellent choice.

FAQ about Paris Walking Tours

One of the best ways to see Paris is on foot! You could easily walk across the city in a few hours. I suggest picking a neighborhood and spending at least a few hours there! For example, you could spend an entire afternoon walking down Champs Elysées. See the Arc de Triomphe, stop at a cafe, and shop at the stores along the avenue.

The most walkable neighborhoods in Paris are along the River Seine, especially if you want to skip the metro. Le Marais and the Latin Quarter are great for a mix of old and new attractions. Rue Cler is stunning. Spend your days shopping at romantic street markets with one of the most famous landmarks in the background—the Eiffel Tower!

Prices for tours in Paris range widely. However, if you want to save some money, I highly recommend Paris Greeters. They offer an authentic experience with local guides and half-day neighborhood tours. You’ll work with your local guide to plan a private walking tour that works for your party.

Book the Best Free Walking Tours with Paris Greeters

It’s guaranteed that you’ll have a great time when traveling to Paris. You might sometimes want exclusive tours, but this Paris Greeters experience was one for the books.

When you’re looking for free walking tours, Paris Greeters is a cut above the rest. We cherished this opportunity to connect with a local Parisian and see Paris off the beaten path! Plus, we can go at our own pace.

Of course, we loved exploring the main attractions of this amazing city, like the Eiffel Tower and the Notre Dame Cathedral. And no trip to Paris is complete without seeing the Luxembourg Gardens and the Louvre Pyramid!

But sometimes, you want the authentic, down-to-earth experience that only a local can give you. Paris Greeters offers that. Plus, it’s a free walking tour! What’s better than that?

I love this Idea of Paris greeting tours. It would be great to try it myself some time. It must be a special feeling to be taken care of. Thanks for sharing!

It would be awesome for solo travelers!

This walking tour sounds absolutely brilliant. I'm a big fan of taking a walking tour when I arrive in a new place, but they are usually in big groups and, although they can be fun and informative, they are sometimes a little impersonal. It sounds like Paris Greeters do a really good job and matching you with the right guide. This is definitely something I will look into when I visit Paris later this year.

Yes, look into it! I loved how personalized the tour was. And it went at a pace that worked for our family. Have an awesome trip!

Sandy N Vyjay

We never knew about Paris greeters and good we got a chance to read your post. We have been to Paris and have heard about walking tours but never thought how it would be. Now that you have introduced Paris greeters to us, we will make it a point to register and do the Paris walking tour. Your pics are incredible!

Thanks! Paris Greeters is a great program and I'm so glad we were able to try it out!

This is something I would like to experience when I visit a different country! Aside from the famous tourist attractions, it's always good to be closer to the locals and for sure they have better places to show you. I hope they have something like that in different countries too. I used to tour my friends from different countries because they said they wanted to know more about the locals, but sometimes it'sexhausting. But the idea is great! Thank you for sharing this!

Yes, I get exhausted showing people around Seattle. But, it is fun to see someone experience your city for the first time!

Takeaways from the 2024 Olympic wrestling trials: 13 athletes punch tickets to Paris

cruises in paris

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The U.S. wrestling team for the 2024 Paris Olympics is just about set.

After a grueling two days of competition at the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State, 18 wrestlers emerged from the Olympic wrestling trials with a victory in their respective weight classes and styles. And in doing so, the vast majority of them − 13 of the 18 − officially punched their tickets to Paris later this summer. The other five will now represent Team USA and try to earn their spots at an Olympic qualifying tournament in May.

Many of the names who qualified Saturday will be familiar to casual Olympic fans, from Helen Maroulis to Kyle Snyder and Kyle Dake . But others might be new, including a pair of dominant youngsters who bested their veteran opponents in the women's tournament.

Here are the key takeaways and things to know from the Olympic wrestling trials, with an eye toward Paris.

Kennedy Blades, Amit Elor leading next wave

Two of the most dominant performances of the trials came courtesy of two 20-year-old women who had never made an Olympic team: Kennedy Blades and Amit Elor.

Elor has taken the global wrestling stage by storm, winning a combined eight world titles in various age divisions over the past three years. She looked in complete control in 6-0 and 2-1 wins over Forrest Molinari at 68 kilograms.

Perhaps the more surprising result came at 76 kg, where Blades upset reigning Olympic silver medalist Adeline Gray in convincing fashion, with an 11-6 victory in the opener followed by an 8-3 win to claim her spot on the Olympic team. Blades said it was a surreal moment, given their history; she said Gray actually coached her at her first trip to the Pan-American Games, when Blades was a teenager.

"Now we're both wrestling for an Olympic spot. It's awesome," Blades said. "This younger generation did look up to the older generation. Now as they start to probably retire and stuff, and we're catching up, they're just setting a great example for us."

While veterans Sarah Hildebrandt, Kayla Miracle and Helen Maroulis still give the U.S. women's Olympic team an experienced feel, they know more young talent is coming. Hildebrandt faced Audrey Jimenez, a high-schooler who won the Arizona boys' state wrestling championships earlier this year, in her weight class final, for example.

"It's just a really beautiful cycle," said Hildebrandt, 30. "You're seeing the depth of women's wrestling in the States grow."

Is this the end for Jordan Burroughs?

Burroughs, the six-time world champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist, told multiple news outlets in stories published this month that he would retire either after the 2024 Paris Games or Olympic trials. But when Jason Nolf knocked him out of the 74-kilogram challenge tournament Friday night, Burroughs did not speak with reporters or otherwise confirm his decision. Nor did he leave his shoes on the mat − the universal wrestling sign for retirement − like fellow U.S. star J'den Cox had hours earlier.

While the official announcement might be pending, Burroughs likely knows he is at the end of the road. He has five children, including a two-month-old boy, Badge. And in a sport where 20-somethings usually reign, he's a few months shy of his 36th birthday and would be 40 by the time the 2028 Olympics roll around.

Kyle Snyder joins rare club

On a night where reigning gold medalist David Taylor's stunning loss drew headlines, Kyle Snyder managed to win comfortably over his opponent, Isaac Trumble. In fact, he didn't concede a point.

Still just 28, Snyder has been a consistent force at 97 kg, winning nine Olympic and world medals in that weight class since 2015. He will now be making his third trip to the Olympics, looking to add to the gold medal he won in Rio de Janeiro and the silver he won in Tokyo. According to USA Wrestling, he is just the 11th American wrestler to qualify for three Games.

"The first time you do it, you're real happy. Now it's almost just an expectation (I have) of myself," Snyder said. "And then the real fun starts."

Parris is heading to Paris

The heavyweight wrestler who will represent Team USA in Paris is none other than Mason Parris, the reigning world bronze medalist who recently wrapped up an outstanding collegiate career at Michigan.

He celebrated his back-to-back 7-0 wins over Hayden Zillmer by donning a "Parris to Paris" hat like his family. When asked where the hats came from, he said he had no clue. His parents just handed him one when he stepped off the mat.

"It's destiny, you know?" Parris said. "I'm 24 years old. 2024. Parris in Paris."

Seeds have advantage

The Olympic wrestling trials unfold in a bracket-style format, but in 14 of the 18 weight classes, at least one athlete got an automatic bye to the semifinals or finals − which appears to offer a huge advantage. The athletes with byes get to rest for most or all of the trials' first day. And they don't have to weigh in multiple times, relieving some of the pressure that cutting weight can bring.

At this year's trials, however, there was more parity than one would think. Five athletes worked their way up what's called the challenge tournament, then beat an athlete who had a bye − most notably Aaron Brooks, who beat Taylor.

"It's pros and cons to both," he said, when asked if wrestling in the challenge tournament helped him build momentum or provided any other advantage. "I wouldn't pick one. Just wherever you're at, use what you've got."

Still work to do

While a winner was crowned in every weight class, three Greco-Roman athletes and two in men's freestyle have another step to take. They'll have to compete at a last-chance Olympic qualifying tournament in Istanbul, Turkey from May 9-12, when the last slots in the Paris 2024 field will be at stake.

Spencer Lee, who beat defending Olympic bronze medalist Thomas Gilman in his final Saturday, views the event as another opportunity to build international experience.

"I see it as a blessing," he said, "and I'll get ready for the Olympics after I go win that tournament."

“I like the mistral,” Virginie Viard said during a fitting the day before the Chanel cruise show in Marseille.

The designer was referring to the powerful wind that blows all the way from her birth city of Lyon to the Mediterranean coast, and has the reputation of driving people crazy.

Viard probably got a little more bluster than she bargained for with the mini-storm that blew over the city on Thursday. Models where whipped with icy gusts of air on the damp rooftop of the Cité Radieuse, one of the flagship midcentury housing projects of architect Le Corbusier.

Guests including Charlotte Casiraghi, Phoebe Tonkin, Anamaria Vartolomei and Lily-Rose Depp, dressed in a floral embroidered miniskirt and black crop top, sheltered under clear plastic umbrellas until just before the show began.

“I don’t know if I was expecting so much wind and quite so much frostiness but, you know, I commit to the look,” Depp said with a smile.

The “Idol” star went viral with the “no pants” outfit she wore on a recent trip to Tokyo, and said this show was rife with off-duty options.

“I really like the idea of a one-piece bathing suit as an outfit, if you’re vacationing someplace warm enough,” she said. “There was a real life to every piece and a very cinematic element as well that I loved.”

Viard was clearly targeting a younger demographic with the lineup, which blended urban influences with tongue-in-cheek references to Provençal tropes, like the bag shaped like a bar of soap touted by Amelia Gray Hamlin.

The model wore her black tweed skirt suit with a diamanté medallion necklace spelling out the number 13, for the Marseille postcode. At the fitting, she peeled back her sleeve to show the number tattooed on her wrist, in honor of her June 13 birthdate.

Viard said she was drawn to the idea of a seaside town with a dose of grit. Marseille, famed for its melting-pot population, football club and shoot-outs between rival drug gangs, delivers that in spades.

“I love its beauty and its energy,” she said. “I would not have done the show on a beach or in the rocky coves nearby. La Cité Radieuse felt just right.”

Built between 1947 and 1952, the vast edifice is not only a tourist attraction but a functioning residential building with 337 apartments, a school and a contemporary art center founded by designer Ora-Ïto, in addition to a micro-hotel, a restaurant and boutiques.

Its grid facade punctuated with primary colors inspired checked tweed suits that stopped well above the knee, while a grass green mandarin collar jacket came with large patch pockets that mirrored the turquoise tiles of the rooftop pool.

The Brutalist architecture proved a perfect foil for monochrome tweed looks and crochet jackets, neoprene swimsuits and sheer dresses in dense nautical prints, in a palette ranging from concrete to anthracite and jet black.

Viard worked with local dance collective (La)Horde and director Ladj Ly on the teaser film for the show.

Chanel staged several exhibitions for the occasion, including one by British photographer Jamie Hawkesworth, who shot a portfolio of images of the city and its residents drenched in golden light.

While it lacks the glamour of French Riviera resorts like Saint-Tropez or Antibes, on a clear day, Marseille with its fish market and open-air games of pétanque is all southern charm.

“It’s a city that’s all about the clash of cultures,” enthused Casiraghi, who spent part of her childhood in nearby Provence.

“It’s a very rich hub for all forms of artistic activity, and then there is its relationship with soccer, which is really key to the identity of Marseille. That’s what makes the charm of this city that is absolutely unique in the world,” said the Monaco royal, who’s been a Chanel brand ambassador since 2021.

“I’ve been to the Vélodrome [stadium] a few times to see OM play,” she added, referring to the Olympique de Marseille football club, which was scheduled to face off against Italian club Atalanta later that day in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals.

Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion and president of Chanel SAS, said the soccer game — taking place less than a mile from the show venue — added an extra wrench to what was already a complex event, but it also ensured the city’s energy levels were high. “It’s the real Marseille,” he said.

With its recent choices of show destinations, including Dakar , Manchester and now Marseille, the luxury brand is speaking to a new generation of luxury clients.

“There will always be destinations that have a link to the heritage of the house, but Chanel has entered a phase of development where it’s about more than that. The world today is broader,” Pavlovsky said.

“What we’re doing today is understanding the energy of the world, and that energy also comes from urban environments, from settings that are perhaps less bucolic or less spectacular, but just as filled with meaning, energy and values,” he added.

“The result is a Chanel that’s the same, but different. It’s the same because the codes of the house are unchanged, and it’s different because it takes a certain audacity, a certain courage to go to places that are a little unexpected,” he said.

While Chanel is a longtime partner of Maison Mode Méditerranée, an endowment fund that supports local fashion designers, until now Marseille has hosted shows by less-established brands like Jacquemus and Koché, which were both guests of its OpenMyMed festival.

In order to reach out to young people, Chanel has organized a free exhibition running from Friday until May 26 at the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean (Mucem) featuring the work of 16 artists in collaboration with several of the specialty workshops from Le19M, its hub for craftsmanship in Paris.

Luxury brands are seeking to broaden their customer base amid a global slowdown in spending among aspirational consumers, who are most heavily hit by inflation. Chanel, which is due to publish its annual results later this month, expects a normalization of growth rates after three years of post-pandemic euphoria, Pavlovsky said.

“We’re entering a weaker, less favorable cycle, but the brands that have good fundamentals should come out of it unscathed,” he said. “I’m certain we will continue to post growth this year. I remain super optimistic.”

The executive acknowledged that domestic spending in China was down, but noted this was due to Chinese nationals traveling again and spending more overseas. He said Chanel’s overall business with Chinese consumers continues to increase.

He declined to comment on the impact of successive price increases on sales of its handbags, and said it was too early to measure the effect of a splashy new advertising campaign featuring Brad Pitt and Penélope Cruz.

Pavlovsky also deflected a question about renewed speculation that Hedi Slimane would replace Viard as creative director of Chanel, amid his rumored exit from Celine. “Virginie seems in good shape, no?” he shot back.
